Mr Frog guy, what is the different between a frog & a toad?

This is probably the second most common question I receive, after "what's your favourite frog".

There is no difference, because this is a false dichotomy. It is not a comparison of equal categories. Toads are one of the ~55 frog families. Toads unequivocally are frogs.

If you want to know the difference between toads and some other family or clade of frogs, you would either have to be more specific, or identify features that are unique to toads—synapomorphies of Bufonidae. These are the differences between toads and all other frogs.

Synapomorphies of Bufonidae include the parotoid glands (but not present in all toads), some funky muscular arrangements, a weird bone in the skull, and the Bidder's organ, which is basically a backup ovary in male toads that allows them to become reproductively active females if their testes are damaged or removed surgically.

updated post! western north carolina is very much still recovering from the effects of hurricane helene, we’re almost five months past when the hurricane hit at this point and there’s still roads in my area that only reopened for the first time last week, there’s still roads with mud caked along the sides that somehow still hasn’t washed away yet, there’s still debris stuck in the trees and along the riverbanks, still abandoned cars trapped in mud. and while a lot of areas that weren’t hit quite as hard have been able to mostly return to “normal” the landscape is forever changed, and so many people lost their homes and jobs and livelihoods. we’ve come a long way these past few months, but there’s still a long way to go.

Thinking about how Leo’s portal and teleportation powers have both directly (and in one instance, indirectly) been the cause of him being separated from his brothers at least four times now.

There’s that time in Portal Jacked, where his inexperience leads to his portal being messed with and his brothers ending up in Tahiti.

There’s the Bad Timeline, where Leo’s portaling led to them losing the Key, therefore indirectly leading to the apocalypse and in turn, ending with Leo being the last of his brothers alive (though just for a few minutes.)

There’s him teleporting him and Krang into the Prison Dimension, cutting him off from his family so wholly that the only way to fix this was a literal mystic miracle.

Then there’s the comic, where Leo’s powers act up again and make him lose months of time completely isolated from everyone and everything he knows.

Just, looking at all of this, it’s like the universe gave him the powers of distance on purpose to test him (and his bros), literally seeing if they can overcome unimaginable space and still make it back together. Imagine if it doesn’t stop here, and Leo has to learn to either deal with the occasional complete isolation or deal with time travelers coming back to stop some terrible event his powers (whether directly or indirectly) have caused, events that always lead to separation in some way, shape, or form.

It’s worth noting, too, that his portals often led to accidental separation, but his teleportation was the one power of his that was used to isolate himself on purpose…and was also the one that in any other scenario would have been the most permanent.

Sketch of a typical Wardi house (small), located adjacent to farmland on the Briya river floodplain.

Most houses are made with mudbrick and with a smooth outer coating, sometimes plastered or otherwise decorated (this one has fairly minimal decorative painting). The climate is dry overall and mudbrick is the most economical and resistant building material available (though it does require more maintenance than in outright arid climates due to regular and sometimes very heavy winter rains), with the use of wood generally being reserved for maintaining the structural integrity of the roof and portals. These houses are fairly effective at insulation, and a well-constructed home will not have dramatic temperature gradients between hot days and cool nights.

Some homes lack doors altogether and use fabric or straw drapes; actual doors are hung by pintles and made with wood and/or woven reeds. Domestic chimneys have not been invented anywhere in general, and smoke in a small house like this will be removed (not the most efficiently) through small tubes in the walls and via the door/windows. Cooking hearths in these smaller houses are usually placed in the center of the building, which goes a little ways to allowing smoke to disperse.

Flat mudbrick roofs are in use in some places, though pointed thatched roofs like these are more common in all but the driest areas due to better shedding rainfall/occasional snow accumulation. Thatching is made with straw or papyrus, location depending, and can become very thick as a byproduct of routine maintenance on old houses.

Misc bits:

-bell windchimes on each side of the house (wards off ghosts and makes a pretty sound).

-little clay guardian lion over the doorway (most houses will have one on each side, though those not overseeing entrances may be hidden in the thatching or buried to fully embed their protective qualities).

Process and things to look out for the next time

I greatly enjoyed making this one. I wanted to try putting the paper onlay on in a different way. (No pictures of the process since I had my hands busy and no time to spare for taking photos.)

First was again to pick the part of the paper that I needed gone. I felt like all colours played nicely into the colour palette of the comic, but I needed room to put a title on and wanted the cover less busy. I felt like the red and orange area would be a better fit than wave themed one, so I cut that way. I painstakingly tried to keep the feathers of all those birds intact (so so many birds... ) but this time voted against cutting along the legs as well, there were too many legs and they rip easily off when wet or glue down crooked. So off with the legs it was. (I also got rid of a few birds to make room for the spine and front title.)

When laying down the onlay I decided against putting the onlay on the cover and instead placed the cover onto the onlay. I marked the cover position on the back of the onlay glued the paper up and hit my first challenge. Which was to transfer the glued up onlay to a clean sheet of waste paper so I would not ruin the cloth. To work in the hinge I used sheet of plastic (I cut open an old plastic sleeve for documents), which worked well enough to start with. I had time to get the paper nicely set into the hinge and over the spine stiffener and then I had to peel the sheet away form the paper onlay. Which would have been much easier if there weren't so many tight curves and edges in the design. I got it off almost intact and with no visible issue when I was done. The glue had still dried a bit too fast, but I think it's the way to go. (Next time I will try adding some paste.)

When the paper was on I pressed it shortly, and then put the book block inside and weighed down again, this time between metal edged boards that have a lip to hold down the hinge.

The ledge is actually quite large on my boards (those were self-made by a friend). You can see where the wood ends and boards start. I have 3 different boards on each side to completely even out the protruding edge so I can adjust those lips to the case's board thickness. I neither want the book dangling without support just being pinched tightly at the hinge nor does it help much if the lip is so short it doesn't reach down the full board thickness at the hinge.

Btw, the boards for evening out are exactly cut to size of the pressing boards and I marked each thickness so I know I'm using the corresponding boards on each side.

Now to the issues and possible future issues with this bind. Again I was a bit late and some parts were to dry already to adhere nicely to the case so I had to shove some glue under the paper. Thankfully, the cloth was very forgiving in that area. It doesn't look like it but it's sort of coated and not paper backed at all. (Naturally I have only a tiny bit left of it.)

I also made this case, hot stamped the title and cased in in one day. The case was not entirely dry when I stamped the title which can be seen by the slightly too deep indentation of the letters. Especially at the 'n' at the end.

The paper feels like it sits more on top than it has in previous binds. Which makes it a bit more prone to scuffing, also, all the pointed angles are not ideal. Even less the ones in the hinge area. It would have been preferable to have none of the small bits situated in an area with motion. I already had to glue down a few beaks and feather tips there. I will see how it holds up to in the long run.
