NEW OC DROP!!!!!!!!! Say hi to Del! But please call him "Dellie" ! He's an exchange student who joined NRC a bit late and out of the blue, but his friendly demeanor made him quickly fit in with the rest as if he was there from the start.

Dellie is a young dolphin merfolk who's fairly tall and athletic, usually towering over most of his peers. But his multicolored hair with the resemblance of harlequin ice cream and cute aesthetic make him appear more friendly and easier to approach for others. He is often seen with stickers on his face which change everyday depending on what he's wearing, they are said to help distract others from looking at his sharp toothy grin. Bows are also a big part of his wear, any ribbon or tie he has will be turned into a cute bow with pins attached. The bow on his tail has a bell, it not only makes it cuter but it also helps to know when Dellie is nearby, since his footsteps are very silent and it risks the chances of someone getting jumpscared by him if it weren't for the bell. 🎀 His mostro lounge wear is practically the same as Jade and Floyds, besides the fact he wears roller-skates with colors to match the uniform. The roller-skates help him go from table to table quickly and bring orders to customers faster, but they mainly help attract more customers. Because everyone loves watching a dolphin do tricks, even if it's something simple as a little twirl 💜

Personality 🎀✨

Dellie is very social and kind hearted, he goes out of his way to befriend and help others around him without any intention of expecting something in return. He does favours and errands for others so often it's impressive how he gets anything done for himself. He especially likes to help those who he "looks up to", one example being Azul. Who at first didn't like his offers to help but quickly adapted to them after realising Dellie has no intention of wanting anything from him, he just likes being told what to do and told good job for it. This as well made him become a perfect teachers pet, they can count on him by doing tasks that most students usually can't, since he isn't only kind, but also very intelligent. He has even helped tutored some students before who struggled with assignments or classes, Kalim, Deuce and Ace being a few of them (and recurring ones). Dellie also seems to have a soft heart, not enjoying being yelled at or being confronted about anything because it will quickly drive him to tears, it makes everyone around him feel like they just witnessed a puppy being kicked. This has only happened once and never again, it made the person doing the yelling/confronting feel like they were bullying the exchange student who already felt left out because he joined later than others, there were even glares directed towards the guy for this (said person apologised profusely to Dellie for making him cry, and he forgave them since he knew they didn't mean to).

But surprisingly, Dellie can get protective if the yelling is directed towards a friend, or someone like Azul. dropping everything he's doing to get between the friend and the other person, almost as he's protecting them from harm. Making Dellie not only a friend you can count on, but also a guard dog who will protect you from bullies.

At least, that's what Dellie wants you to think.

In reality, Dellie is a typical spoiled, mean, and selfish rich kid. Everything he does is because it makes HIM look good, his friendly, bubbly personality and cutesy appearance is just a mere facade he puts on around others. His kind words and gestures are only meant to make people want him to be around them and ask him for help, knowing he will help if no one else can. Dellie does not care about most people he helps, he willingly only sticks around certain people if they peaked his interest or if they're fun to torment.

Despite the fact Dellie has defended Azul and others from people who would be considered bullies MULTIPLE times, Dellie is in fact secretly a bully himself. He specifically acts like the leader of what you'd typically see in shows when a group of bullies appears (which means he's probably the worse person you'll ever meet). But he specifically picks out victims who he believes are fun to pick on, people like Azul, Riddle or Idia, etc are surprisingly NOT one of them, in fact they are the ones he defends from others. Sadly, the unfortunate soul who did end up being Dellie's unlucky victim is Floyd. Dellie found Floyd's mood swings and short tempers funny, hilarious even. Since the first few days he has been in NRC and made friends with everyone, not long after he has made his personal goal to make Floyd's life hell. Only singling him out when no one is looking, but also treating him with the same kindness he gives to Azul and Jade when they're around as if it is to mock him. Even making sure to play the victim card when Floyd gets fed up with him but someone ends up entering the room when it happens, and usually this makes Floyd end up being the one to apologise because Dellie would NEVER do whatever Floyd told them. Even if it was true, Dellie's crocodile tears and puppy dog eyes make Floyd look like he was doing the bullying instead of the other way around.

In conclusion, Dellie's sweet and soft persona is all an act which only Floyd can see through it. And knowing this, Dellie makes sure to go out his way to ruin Floyd's mood, no matter what the choices he makes are, he will do them while wearing a warm smile on his face, facing towards everyone who's blissfully unaware of what an actual bastard he is.

Signature spell ✨

"Aww c'mon cheer up a little~ Toss Around!" Dellie's signature spell makes him able to summon 3 dolphins around the opponent, when the opponent strikes to attack with a spell, one of the dolphins will instead catch it and start playing ball with the other dolphins over the opponent's head. This serves as a distraction (making the opponent think one of the dolphins will eventually hit them with their own spell) as Dellie quickly charges up his own spell and then strikes the opponent directly while they were not looking. Dellie's spell is either weaker or stronger depending on location, if Dellie uses his spell in a more drier location, his final blow will be weaker and the dolphins would be playing slower which gives the opponent a chance to dodge Dellie's attack. But in an area with more moisture, the dolphins will play faster, and Dellie's attack will be stronger and possibly knock you down for a bit. Oh and to add salt to the wound, the dolphins would laugh at you after you fall down before they vanish. If you want a description on how this would feel, imagine 3 guys take your pencil case and start playing hot potato with it. And while you're distracted trying to get your pencil case back a secret 4th dude fucking hits you with a volleyball full force for shits and giggles.

Other notes 🌸

After moving to land, Dellie has took an interest in stickers, collecting them for fun and even putting them on his own face. Dellie sometimes even puts stickers on others as a sign of friendship, he has put A LOT of stickers on Floyd before, purely, out of spite.

Dellie can sometimes accidentally come off as flirty when being nice, surprisingly he doesn't do this on purpose and actually gets shocked if anyone confesses to him because of it (there were a few who have confessed, but Dellie has rejected all of them and doesn't plan on accepting any as it seems).

Dellie often gets babied by others because of his "kind heart and friendly demeanor", some students even avoid saying curse words around him and get scolded by other students when they do. Dellie finds this so humiliating but takes advantage of it when playing victim because people end up defending him when he's in trouble.

Dellie's exam papers all have cute doodles on them, his professors told him to stop at first but eventually just let him do what he wants as long as he finished his exams on time.

Dellie's hair might actually be dyed, but he rejects and avoids any questions about it since you never even see his roots.

Dellie enjoys music and dancing, it's why he joined the pop music club. He sometimes gets invited by Kalim to come and dance with him and Jamil.

Vil doesn't like Dellie because he reminds them of Neige, though they tolerate him enough to let him help with whatever task he's needed for.

Dellie's favourite food is inconsistent, sometimes it's waffles, sometimes it's cake, other times it's pasta or pizza. People just assumes he can't choose a favourite and therefore has many instead of one.

It's unknown to why Dellie switched schools and joined NRC, only thing Dellie says about it is that he just didn't "fit in" with his old school before he completely changes the topic. Though there is a theory Dellie got into NRC because his dad payed a lottt of money for him to get in.

Dellie is genderfluid, and his sexuality is bisexual with a lean for guys! (<- he hasn't discovered this yet about himself, but at least we're aware)

He has a very hard time showing affection in a public setting. Even in front of his brothers, he sometimes panics - getting all red in the face - which usually ends with him denying his feelings for you or outright insulting you (why would he want to be with a stupid human anyways?, etc.)

In private, he is the most annoying motherfucker you have to peel him off of you most days. Earlier into the relationship, it was shy touches mixed with blushing. Now that you’re comfortable with each other, you have 0 personal space. Because hey, what’s yours is his - and that includes your bubble, right MC?

B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?)

We already know the answer to this one, as he was literally written in game to be the ‘best friend’ archetype. Mammon starts crass and rude, acting like you’re a bother and he’d rather be anywhere else but next to you. Your friendship starts once Lucifer assigns him to be your guardian. Though he acted like he hated it, Mammon quickly became fond of you. Now you’re his inseparable partner in crime.

C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)

The minute you are home from RAD and you both have changed out of your uniforms, he’s pulling you into his room, on to his bed, and not letting go of you. Sometimes he doesn’t even wait for you to change. He’s clingy, okay! Why would you wanna be anywhere else but layin’ with him?

D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)

Mammon already feels like you are. His home is the HOL, with his brothers. And now, his home includes you. It’s his ideal scenario.

Plus he doesn’t have to pay rent.

He can be good at both tasks if he actually applies himself, but only seems to do it if you specifically ask him to. If Lucifer asks him to cook or clean, the room still feels dirty and everything is burnt. You almost think he does it on purpose.

E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)

Once you and Mammon are together, he can’t see a future without you. He can’t see his life without you.

If it was ever broken off, it would be a scenario where he means well, thinking you would be happier or safer, generally better off without him.

But he is greed and even the thought of it upsets him to no end.

The boy cried watching Cinderella ofc he wants to get married! But he couldn’t imagine to whom until you came into his life. Something just clicked for him. You’re his best friend, his partner in crime, you’re his. I don’t think it would be quick, as a matter of fact he’s way too tsundere for that. But he’s sure once he’s ready, it’ll definitely be you.

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)

It depends! So we know he’s the second strongest, so in that regard if he wants to be he can be far from gentle. But when it comes to you and his brothers, he consciously trying to be softer. Emotionally? Boys a wreck. A huge softie. Please hold him.

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)

Once again, please hold him. Even if he acts like he hates it sometimes, your hugs are something he looks forward to. When he feels awkward in public he’ll give you one of those weird barely touching you side hugs. But in private? Have fun trying to get him off you.

I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?)

So we know canonically when this happens (I believe it was around end of season one of the og game?) and we know he says it plenty after that. We don’t have an exact way to know how much time passes between episodes, but you can assume it took about a year as that was the end of MC’s exchange program originally.

J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)

Ooooooooh while he may not be like Levi embodying envy, when it comes to you he’s ridiculously jealous. He’s your ‘first’, remember? If it’s something that’s making him jealous relating to his brothers (i.e. hanging out with someone other than him), he’ll pretend he doesn’t care to the point of being a giant dick about it, inadvertently showing he actually does care a lot.

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)

Honestly? Most of the time they’re timid and shy. He holds you in the highest regard, he adores you though he may not show it very well. You still make him blush like crazy and his stomach still stirs every time he looks at you.

Other times they’re possessive and passionate, he is the avatar of greed after all. But really, his style depends whether or not you take the lead.

His favorite place to get kissed is the neck/collarbone area

L = Little ones (How are they around children?)

Another one we canonically know! He’s great with them. He probably the most emotionally intelligent of his brothers and actually cares greatly about the things that matter to him. His brothers and you are everything to him, but that little girl back in the human realm that he takes care of? She means the world to him too. He’d be devastated if something happened to her. Meeting you, the thought of having your own child pops into his head every now and again, and it makes his heart melt. But whether or not you have children is something he leaves entirely up to you, not pressuring or pushing you about it. All in all, he’s a natural at taking care of them.

M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)

If it’s a school day, most the times Lucifer forces you both to sleep separately in your own rooms. He’ll knock on your door at the same time everyday to walk you down to breakfast with the others, and then off to school. It’s very routine.

If it’s a lazy day, or a weekend, he’s clingy. Have fun trying to get him out of bed, and if he has anything to say about it, you won’t be doing anything productive either.

N = Night (How are nights spent with them?)

School nights are spent having to be separated most of the time per Lucifer’s rules which Mammon says are ‘totally unfair’ and ‘dumb’ and whatever other negative thing he can think of. But he’s going to call you. Relentlessly even, if you don’t pick up right away. He’ll talk your ear off into the night until one of you falls asleep on the other line of the phone.

Weekend nights are spent out on the town, he wants to go to places like casinos and The Fall, so if you let him drag you along too, he’s elated.

O = Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?)

Since he puts up such a front with his feelings, it’s hard for him to get really mushy or personal. Once he begins to trust you more (and fall for you) the speed at which he tells you everything quickens, and he becomes an open book.

P = Patience (How easily angered are they?)

He seems to be easily angered by his brothers teasing him, but knowing him as well as you do, you can tell he’s never really actually mad at them. He could never be. The only time you’ll see him actually get mad is if something happens to you or one of them.

Q = Quizzes (How much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?)

He’ll pretend like he doesn’t remember every single little detail you’ve told him, but mentally he’s taking notes every time you open your mouth. He hangs off your every word, so he knows things ranging from general facts about you to your most deep, personal secrets. And he won’t forget a single word (even if he may act like he did)

R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?)

Mammon’s favorite moment in your relationship was your first trip to Devil’s Coast together. He’s honestly not even sure if you considered that a date, since you were actively looking for Lucifer and Diavolo, but he certainly does. No. 2’s commentary didn’t help at all. He gets embarrassed when he thinks about it, but he loves it all the same. He keeps the picture you took together in his wallet.

S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?)

He was literally assigned to essentially be your own demon bodyguard, so yes, he’s very protective of you. At first it was because it was an obligation, then it was because he was intrigued with you, and it quickly morphed into because he’s in love with you.

He’s shocked anytime you stand up for him or defend him in anyway. He’s not used to his brothers defending him in conversations, and is surprised to see you do it. Honestly, he feels like he doesn’t deserve it because of how much he looks down on himself. And you’re this tiny human stepping up to the plate, sometimes risking your life for him? Honestly he finds it hot.

T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?)

The most try hard that ever tried hard. Even if he tries to pretend what he’s doing for you is a favor, or the gift he got you was nothing special, it’s always something ridiculously couriered to you and your tastes, or something you physically said you wanted out loud. You could have said you wanted something three months ago. A year ago even. But he’ll always remember and always make sure you get it one way or another.

U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?)

He’s literally the avatar of greed, so obviously there’s that. He can lose control sometimes when it comes to grim, or his obsession with both his belongings and with you.

But, I think Mammon’s worst bad habit is how negatively he thinks about himself. You’ll always need to check in on him from time to time to make sure he’s not spiraling in his mind. But when he does, you’re the best person to pull him out of it.

V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)

He’s concerned to a degree being a model and all, but definitely nowhere near Asmo standards of vanity. He’s the kind of person who always looks good without trying. The most effort he’ll put into anything is his outfits, especially if it’s an outfit he’s wearing to go out with you. Besides that, he’s not too concerned.

W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?)

His world would shatter.

Now that he’s met you, and now that he’s almost lost you countless of times, he could never ever see a future for himself that doesn’t have you in it.

He doesn’t want any future without you in it.

He goes through your things. With good intentions of course!!! Why would you think anything else??

Okay maybe at first it was to sell your stuff. But now that he’s with you, he only does it to see what you’re into at the moment so he can gauge the best gift he can get for you, or what date he can take you out to.

He lives for the sparkle in your eye that you get when he does that kind of stuff, so while not an amazing thing to do, his looking is not malicious.

Y = Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?)

He doesn’t like people who are assholes for no reason. Sure, he can see why someone would act aggressively if he knows the why they are, but if they’re just doing it to do it or for some self serving reason, he dislikes them.

And though he is a model, he also doesn’t like people who are too full of themselves. He’s already got an Asmo at home, why would he need another one of em’?

Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habits of theirs?)

He is terrible at falling asleep.

And even worse at waking up.

He becomes accustomed to staying out late or just talking to you late into the night, so his sleep cycle is horrendous.

Once he does fall asleep, have fun trying to wake him up. We all know how great that went for Levi when he was trying to get his figure back :)

How often does he shower...? Likely not too often...! it's not that he refuses to shower, he just forgets a lot. it simply slips his mind majority of the time

Though he always showers before leaving his dorm, no matter the occasion, even if he's just getting some food

Not hot water, not cold water, sort of some awkward in between but not exactly lukewarm... a very specific temperature he often struggles to achieve, but achieves nonetheless

Soap wise... he definitely uses 3 in 1... he used to constantly used the Minion one for little kids, but then someone (seven) found out then teased him into getting actual soap, it's soap for adults! but still 3 in 1

Doesn't take overly long in the shower, the most he's ever spent in there was probably half an hour, though on average it's roughly around ten to fifteen minutes

He showers every day, sometimes at night, sometimes in the morning, but i also strongly feel as if he hates going to bed feeling dirty, so even if he doesn't fully shower before going to bed, he at least rinses himself off with water before changing and going to bed, same applies with it flipped, if he fully showers before going to bed, he's definitely rinsing himself off with just water for a bit when he wakes up

He definitely showers in hot water, hot enough to make the rest of a bathroom into a goddamn sauna (me too tho) he never uses cold water to shower, it's always hot water that would probably worry someone if they found out the exact temperature!

This man has soap, he not only has both shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, he also definitely has several other hair related shower products, various things to keep his hair and skin healthy and smooth

He takes his time in the shower, usually around 40 minutes to an hour depending on what he's doing for his hair and all that, also he definitely gets upset if the water starts getting cold even though he knows damn well he's been in there for a goddamn hour, shower time is also some personal time for him, time for him to personally de-stress, so he may take a little longer if he decided he wants to jack off... he likely prefers doing it while he's showering as well, since it's an easy clean up

She showers at least every other night, at most every night, but she doesn't exactly ever have the time for that...

Generally warm water, not horrifically hot or anything, just enough to let her relax physically and mentally, extra relaxation if she decides to take a bath

For soap she's just basic... shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and a simple face wash, nothing special, just enough to get her cleaned and relaxed

Usually spends around twenty to thirty minutes in there (no difference if she's taking a bath), she doesn't have much hair so washing that doesn't take much time, and while she's thorough with washing her body and face, it doesn't take a long time, she simply enjoys basking in the warmth of the water and relaxing herself, it's her alone time, nobody can bother her there, so she chooses to spend her time in there relaxing

He showers when he can, usually he's swamped with work so he doesn't have too much time for basic human tasks, but it's not like he'll go months without it, at the very least it's once a week, though ideally he'd like to shower every morning or ever other morning (not nighttime because if he falls asleep with wet hair, he'll definitely wake up to it being stuck in an odd position)

Usually showers in hot water, probably around the same temperature as Zen, but it's so his muscles can finally have a break from probably constantly being tensed up, he's always so tense with work or something happening in the rfa, he needs the warmth and heat of the water to calm his body and mind down for him

Soap wise, basic shampoo/conditioner, i feel like he'd use bar soap though, he's not a fan of liquid body soap because i feel like he would just hate the feeling of a loofah, he definitely prefers bar soap rubbed onto a washcloth to clean himself, it's just more comfortable for him

Honestly there's no way to tell how long he'll be in the shower! it could be ten minutes, it could be an hour, there no estimated range, once he's done he's done, though he definitely takes a lot longer if he takes a bath (707 is 100% a bubble bath enjoyer)

The smell of coffee wakes me up, and I blink a few times and yawn.

"Morning, sleepyhead," Helena greets me while making herself comfortable back in bed, carefully balancing her cup and a data pad.

"Morning," I murmur drowsily and stretch myself. "Thanks for the coffee." Sure has its perks, always waking up second.

Helena scrolls through her pad, sipping on her own cup, while I just watch her for a bit. God, I love these rare quiet mornings, we don't have those too often. It's nice - strangely domestic. Almost makes me forget that it's my boss I am sharing a bed with.

"Minister Bradford sent our new assignment," she remarks, eyebrow raised, and I make a face.

"God, I hate that guy."

"Oh, but he's so nice and friendly," she comments dryly without taking her eyes off the screen.

She hates her boss just as much. I still don't know how he even got into that position. His predecessor was a lot more dependable - what he lacked in charisma, he made up for in knowledge and insight. That man knew what he was doing. But Bradford? Not ideal, to say the least.

"Uh-huh. I still have nightmares from how he kept hitting on me the last time we visited the Ministry."

"That was indeed a very sorry sight."

"You should have kissed me in front of him to mark your territory," I suggest, making her laugh.

"I will consider this next time."

I thoroughly stretch once more before getting myself into an upright position to finally have some of that coffee, too. "Anyway, where does he want us?"

"Asteria."

Well, now I sure am fully awake. "Huh."

"What's wrong?"

"Oh, just…" I sigh, gnawing on my lip. "I have an aunt there. Or, at least I think so - I know she moved there a couple of years ago. I don't talk to that side of the family much."

"So I take you're not very close?"

"No."

"Then what's the problem?"

I stare at Helena for a moment. How does she not see what the problem is? "Well, she's still family?" I sometimes forget how little she cares about things like blood relations - or other people in general, usually.

She looks at me intently, eyebrow raised. "Would you feel more comfortable not being part of this mission?"

Considering the pros and cons for a moment, I fidget with my cup. I very much appreciate the offer, because I know Helena would rather have me there - everyone on the team has their designated tasks, and every time someone is not available for whatever reason, our well-oiled machine stutters a little. So I would actually feel kind of bad if I took her up on it. Also, being away from her for who knows how many weeks doesn't sound particularly appealing either. And I'm not even sure my aunt still lives there.

"What's the objective, anyway?" I ask.

"We're just supposed to scare them a little."

Well, that's something - we are not sent there with the primary goal of wiping out a whole colony. But I also know that can change in a heartbeat, depending on how the whole mission is going. Wouldn't be the first time.

For a while now, I have actually managed to push aside what we do for a living pretty well. That there are real, living people on all those planets we are supposed to discipline, and not just abstract numbers in a report. Putting a specific face to those abstract numbers reminds me again.

Helena is looking at me patiently and waiting for an answer.

"Would you hold it against me if I did sit this one out?"

I know I'm gaining more readers, those who aren't familiar with the academy, so I'll do a short explanation of what you'll be seeing from the academy!

In short, the academy series is a reverse harem/polyamory series set in Charleston, South Carolina.

( so you'll be seeing multiple men date the same women in this book, so don't be shocked lmfaoo ) most of this won’t happen until we are well into the story — but I’d hate to confuse all of you! I’d like every single one of you to enjoy and understand the story completely!

The academy ( that MFC won't be much involved or at all ) is basically a top secret organization that specializes in helping men, women, and children who are in an abusive relationship or homes and help them get out of that — most join the academy to help others in the same situations.

There are teams that work together and are basically a family in all but blood; and "family is a choice".

The men in teams are referred to as "dogs" and the female team members are referred to as "birds".

'Ghosts', whether birds or dogs, are children without much history to their names. They are priceless to the Academy.

The Academy's system works on a series of favor and financial debt. Everyone in the Academy starts out with financial debt. It's the value of the education an Academy student requires to become the best at what he does. If it was a private investigation training class or an eight-week boot camp, or you were starving and needed groceries to get through a human biology class, the Academy took care of it. Your debt can't just be paid off directly, it requires completing various Academy missions. Whatever it is, there is a price tag.

Favors though are the real core of the Academy. Favors are anything that doesn't have a price - usually family problems within the Academy that other members can't handle alone. New members owe ten favors immediately, with the maximum owed being thirty. The value of a task in favors varies depending on the task.

All Academy trials are comprised of the same parties: the whole team, plus five randomly selected members from other teams, presided over by a manager who has collected all the data. There is no age minimum for the randomly selected members, the only requirement is that they had to be past initiation and a full member of the Academy. The ultimate goal at a trial is to keep the family together as much as possible.

Each team has two leads. The first is the main contact for the Academy, they track the jobs the members go on, and let them know what jobs are available. The second is the family lead, who keeps track of all the team members, and makes sure that everything runs smoothly for them - ensuring they have food, bills are paid on time, and everyone that needs a job has one.

but I want you all to be able to understand it enough to enjoy the story without being confused!

Most of the time, I'll explain through River and my other characters.

I hope this makes sense!

River won't be very involved in the academy, but there will be mentions and most of River's story revolves around, not only Jungkook and Moon, but River's brothers, friends, and family!

It's also widely known that the two of you are together and while you're less prone to physical violence than Eric everyone knows not to mess with your man if they want to live to tell the tale. In terms of prowess Eric wants to be the best at everything so he will have practised and read books and practised some more, the man knows what he's doing.

He doesn't have a favourite position because he wants them all, his moods change so quickly you regularly get whiplash so he's constantly changing things up depending on his and your mood. If you're both pent up after a hard day he might just taking you against the wall of your shower, or maybe he gets up in the morning to find you cooking breakfast in his T-shirt which you know will always end with him bending you over the counter roughly. While not usually one for public sex he's not adverse to a last night session on the mats in the training room after sparring, who goes on top will always be determined by who won the fight.

Link isn’t sure if it needs to be polished – it always seems to catch the light of sun, whether dawn, high noon, or dusk – but it feels remiss of his training not to. It’s something to do with his hands, either way. Something to halt the worrying of his scarf’s embroidery until it falls from the cobalt blue.

He is not in his own tent, but the Princess’. Impa off commanding the troops in her absence, he was tasked with keeping an eye on her until the general’s return. The Princess herself is lying in the camping bed. She’s sleeping as peacefully as one can with several arrow wounds and a concerning gash along her thigh – fairies are being looked for, but supplies are scant and springs concerningly dry. Potions, the same. One could argue that the Princess should take priority, but she argued against it herself. Selfless and brave, as usual.

Link glances towards her sleeping face. Watches her lashes flutter – they’re short, shorter than his, pale against her eyelids. Notices, for the first time, a mole on the edge of her jaw. Wonders if she was ever told to conceal it with makeup, the same way he was with his childhood acne. Wonders if she despises the idea of conforming to such a strict ideal as much as he does.

Something changed in the valley. For the first time, it was as if the full weight of the legacy of every one before him was felt upon his shoulders. Figuring out how to carry it feels monumental. But, beyond that, a clarity has reached his eyes that he doesn’t quite know how to reckon with.

There is a story. Link is aware of it, now. Destiny is less a singular road he’s forced to walk, and more a story written in a pen larger than any one mortal author. He sees it everywhere – the roles everyone takes. The costumes they wear, the names they hold. This story has been told before, over and over and over, in new ways each time, but it is still told. And he has no choice but to see it through.

Link has wondered, in the quiet moments such as now, how much of it he had inadvertently written himself.

Since the realisation, there have been little rebellions. He has discarded the overconfident wielder of the sword of evil’s bane – instead settling into a quieter courage that gets the job done. He… talks to people, more. Braves the looks of his voice bare and undisguised without Proxi’s presence claiming it as hers. Asks pointless sounding questions, a bid for connection. Agitha’s favourite colour is pink. Impa likes scrambled eggs more than the average person. Midna’s wolf is special to her in a way she would not elaborate, but it was a conversation not centred around a mission or his duties, so it felt good.

Link’s duty may try to turn him and those around him into tools, but he won’t let it.

Dissecting the image of the princess in his mind has been hardest. Not because he doesn’t believe her to be her own person, but because so much of his character is dependent on an almost worship of hers. Link is not supposed to know the princess, he is to serve her – a closeness seems almost taboo, in such rigid structures. The only stories where that was escaped were ones in which she was no longer the princess.

Link thinks about Sheik. The time they spent together before it was revealed the man and the princess were one in the same was brief, all things considered. A couple weeks of travel between destinations, the (now he knows Impa knew almost the entire time, displaced) anxiety of a missing monarch on his shoulders the entire time. But there was something about their interactions that settled brighter in his mind.

Their sparring, for one. How equally Sheik seemed to match him, the almost playfulness in their taunts, how Link could see a smile under the mask even as he knocked the other man to the ground. How, those moments pouring over maps and plotting with the navigators, their minds seemed to become one, bouncing ideas off of each other and following fingers across diagrams like they’d been doing it their whole lives. Sitting just the two of them at the campfire, Link’s back turned so Sheik could enjoy his soup in Link’s company without revealing his face – from behind him, Sheik’s gentle laugh at his jokes melting against his shoulders.

Link felt like in those moments, he got to see Zelda so much more than she’s ever been afforded as princess.

He looks at Zelda now – laid up in an uncomfortable tent, wrapped in bandages – and wonders. What it could be, if not this?

Dabi falls asleep first usually. Shiggy will stay up later and eventually pass out by curling up against Dabi depending on how he finds him sleeping. Usually trying not to disturb him more than having him lift an arm or move a cover. Similar happens for waking up with Dabi slipping from the bed at a fairly reasonable time with Shiggy dragging his ass out of bed once he gets too cold without Dabi.

- How’s their team work? Do they share well?

They're a great team. Shiggy isn't very materialistic beyond his games which he'll begudgingly share if Dabi ever shows interest with later buying him his own if he shows more interest. Otherwise he'll just let Dabi buy whatever he wants with whatever funds he has and not really make any claim on what he gets.

- Are they open about their relationship? How do they feel about public displays of affection?

I don't think they actively hide it but they aren't very PDA oriented. Their dynamic is typically more catty in public just because of how they are.

- First impression of each other? Was it love at first sight?

Hell no, they hated each other at first.

- Nicknames? Pet names? Any in-jokes?

Nicknames would take a little while to come up with. They don't find the normal nicknames for themselves or the other to be very funny/endearing. So nothing based off their disabilities or tongue-in-cheek on their quirks. Anyone calling their partner things like 'crusty' or 'burnt bacon' will get promptly murdered.

- Any tasks that are always left to one person?

Shigy is bad about cleaning up after himself and usually leaves that sort of thing for Dabi but he'll help if it's pointed out.

- What annoys them the most about their partner? Would they change it if they could?

Their stubborn nature probably annoys the other occasionally. They sometimes try to annoy each other for fun. They would definitely not change for anything.

- What do the like best about their partner?

Their values.

- Do they discuss big issues? Religion? Marriage? Children? Death?

They would eventually get to most of those topics but not directly. More like beating around the bush about each one to gauge the view.

- Who drives? Cooks? Does the handiwork? Cleans? Pays the bills? Handles the public?

Neither can drive, Dabi can probably cook a little? Shigy can't cook for shit. Shigy obviously is the main face of the partnership but Dabi is often presented for fun. Neither does much housework but Dabi probably does more on the regular because he's better at taking care of himself.

- Do they celebrate holidays? Anniversaries?

Not unless there's food or alcohol involved and only that part of the celebrations.

- Is there a wedding? What was the proposal like? Any kind of honeymoon?

Hmmm, it would either be huge and public or no one would know but them. It would totally depend on the political climate at the time. Dabi would definitely be the one doing the proposal, I think a honeymoon would only happen if they had the extra money and wanted to see what it was like to travel, using that as an excuse.

- What do they do for fun? Do they have a favorite activity or do they like to switch things up?

Dabi's main activity would probably be trying to get Shigy to do anything but video games and leave the house. His success would depend a lot on the bribery.

- Anything they both dread?

Losing each other.

- How adventurous are they?

Very but not very creative.

- Do they keep secrets? Lie? Cheat?

I think they would start out with tons of secrets and occasional lies. Eventually moving to just not revealing the full truths. Only becoming really open later in their relationship. Shigy wouldn't ever cheat because he has no interest in anyone else. Dabi is likely similar.

- What would make them break up? Would it be permanent?

Some stupid fight over something public. No it would not.

- What are their dates like? How long do/did they date? Do they ever feel the need to take a break from each other?

They don't do a lot of official dating, mostly outings together to grab food and head back home.

- What do they fight about? What are their arguments like? How do they make up?

Politics mostly or how to handle public affairs. Their fights are very loud and often break things. Sex is a great makeup.

- What does their home look like? Their room?

A fucking mess.

- Do they share any interests or hobbies?

Not really? I think they would dabble a little in each other's hobbies but not get nearly as into it as the other.

- Does their work ever interfere with the relationship?

Nope

- How do they hug? Kiss? Tease? Flirt? Comfort?

Very involved. They're very touchy feely with all expressions.

- Any doubts about the relationship?

I think once they accept it there wouldn't be doubts.

- How much time do they spend together? Do they share their feelings, or hold things in?

All the damn time. They'll be content in different rooms for a little bit but usually gravitate to be in the same place even if they're not interacting.

- How do their friends feel about their relationship? Their families?

Confused mostly but accepting because they don't really have a choice.

No kids except maybe teaching others with quirks like them. They would easily grow old together if allowed.

- What are their vacations like?

Shigy is a big baby when he gets sick, I imagine Dabi's not far off. So they would tease the other but take care of them eventually. Injuries are mostly just ignored but Shigy would happily help Dabi with caring for his scars/skin/staples.

It would probably make them both VERY irritable the longer it gets.

- Do they have finish each other’s sentences? Pick up any phrases or habits from each other? Know when the other is hiding something?

No, not...really? And likely after a while they would understand the lies but not necessarily press for the truth.

- Do they ever get into trouble? Is it serious, or are they just mischievous?

Of course, and every type from mischievous to literally trying to destroy the world.

- What kind of presents do they get each other? Do they only do it on special occasions?

Successful missions and nope.

- Do they have any pets?

Dabi would eventually get Shigy a dog and he would die from joy.

- Do they bring out the best in each other, or the worst? Do they have a fatal flaw?

Both tbh, and their fatal flaws are what they love about each other.

- What’s their greatest strength as a couple? Their weakness?

Murder and property destruction. Following the law.

- How much would they be willing to sacrifice for the other? Any lines they refuse to cross?

Everything, even some of their values.

Shigy's completely inexperienced so he would enjoy trying just about anything.

- Who initiated the relationship? Who kissed who first?  When did they realize they were in love?

Dabi definitely started it and kissed him first. Shigy probably realized he was in love first though since I feel like he would fall faster than Dabi.

- Any special memories? Do they have a special place they like to go to?

Shigy doesn't really have any, but he would appreciate and adopt any Dabi might have.

- Are they party-goers? What are they like when they’re drunk? Does it happen often?

Not really, they might have some parties in their home but not very often. Mostly just friends just coming and going as they please. They're both idiots drunk and that probably happens fairly often with and without friends.

- Do they let each other get away with things that would normally bother them?

Dabi lets the most slide because Shigy's not as good at picking up when he's being obnoxious.

- Do they talk often? What about?

Mostly just when drunk at first but eventually they would enjoy having someone they can finally open up about their trauma and thoughts about.

- Are the comfortable with each other? Anything they have to have their privacy for?

Pretty comfortable, neither has much concepts of privacy for themselves or others.

- Any special dreams or goals they have as a couple? Any heartbreaks? Regrets?

Live free hard and kick ass. As long as they're allowed to live how they want they're happy.

One of my favorite things about Barb is the way he teases. However, I also think it's fantastic when the tables are turned and he's the one who's flustered.

The thing about this guy is that he isn't easily flustered, but if there is anyone who can accomplish it without even noticing, it's absolutely MC. I have actually written scenes (though I think they later got scrapped) where Barbatos straight up cuts himself while chopping vegetables because of something MC did or said. So not like him! But that's the point! MC makes him do things he wouldn't normally do. And he can either lean into it or try to resist it and I think you end up with different scenarios depending on which way he decides to go.

MC's reaction certainly matters, too. If they're oblivious, I think Barbatos could safely pretend nothing happened and move on, but I also think he could be the one who teases MC and gets them all flustered.

But a wise MC who's all I'm just trying to make sure you're okay! Listen. I very much think that Barbatos would have a hard time controlling himself at that point. Even if he knows that MC is doing it on purpose. Maybe even more if he knows.

The best thing about Barb is that I feel like I can write him being a real troublemaker where he just messes with MC a lot, but I can also write him being the one who is easily flustered. Like yeah he's got that rigid facade, but you can say beneath it there is a man who is fully aware of what he's doing and deliberately does things just to get a reaction out of MC. Or you could say that beneath it is a suppressed man that gets blushy when you start to tease him. However, I do think either way he'd eventually give in because MC is the only person for whom he is lenient about anything ever.

MC might tease him and fluster him and get him all riled up, but as soon as he realizes what's going on, he starts playing into it. I think he'd use the whole situation to his advantage. Especially if he's like yes let's take a break because secretly he wants to get naughty but he doesn't want to mess up the kitchen lol.

Is Tentacles from the Cleanup Crew solely stuck in the bucket? I’m trying to picture how they look, and all I can picture is a yellow bucket ((the ones janitors use for mops, with little wheelies!)) filled with water. Except there isn’t an end to the bucket, it just gets deeper and deeper. It’s a void. An abyss, in which the abyss stares back and waves at you with a cute little tentacle.

omg you described him exactly as I wanted him to look I'm glad I got his design down!! <3 As far as your bucket query goes, he certainly is!! He'd blend in perfectly with any other mop bucket except for the fact that he's got no mop sticking out of his, and his bucket is exceptionally clean since it gets wiped down at least 30 times a day.

But the inside of the bucket--if it isn't being obscured by his tentacles at the surface--is filled with almost completely opaque water, kind of a slimy green colour, though it changes colour slightly depending on.....well, nobody really knows, but it changes somewhat. Maybe depending on his mood? It's hard to tell since Tentacles doesn't talk and he doesn't have any discernible features. But it's most certainly bigger on the inside because he can disappear completely within it, and usually his tentacles don't even come out unless he's wheeling himself down the hallways, clambering around the building to clean the windows, or doing some other cleaning crew-related tasks with Jelly. Some monsters have seen some wriggling masses of tentacles roaming about the school when it's dark or quiet, so there's a few rumours circulating that Tentacles does get out of his bucket for some fresh air or exercise or to hunt--but that's completely false and Tentacles will argue it into the ground. He's not that small, for one, and he would never drag himself across those disgusting floors without the safety and cleanliness of his bucket.

However, he would be willing to allow a certain human someone to get close to his bucket despite him being such a clean freak, purely because he insists that his water is self-cleaning but most monsters would clog it all up with fur and scales and slime--humans are made up of so much water that it won't make much of a difference, at least that's the way he reasons it out. It may not be the best idea to get too close though, because as you said, it's a water-filled void in there with an unimaginable amount of space.....who knows what you might encounter if you let Tentacles drag you down inside? If nobody was stopping him, and if you didn't want him to stop, he might just keep you down there forever.

There are ways to know if a baby is a future man-eater. Bigger size and tendency of the the baby to mature faster than other kids can be the hints. Purring is another warning sign. Yet, everything becomes obvious once the baby’s teeth show up; as I mentioned before, they will be sharp and fangs – long.

And you're right - bringing up a man-eater is complicated.

Let's start with biology. Man-eaters have to gain complete control over their body to live a normal life. Swallowing and regurgitating mechanisms work a bit differently in their case. Unlike humans who make a swallow half-subconsciously, man-eaters can manipulate their inner muscles. Of course, they don’t think about it most of the time; yet, when they need to swallow something voluminous or bring it back, a predator does it, alternately activating certain sections of their throat and esophagus. If they don’t know the specifics, it can even cost them their life.

Therefore, some training is in order:

1) At the early age (around six-seven years old) a man-eater should start swallowing small edible objects like eggs, for instance. Size of them gradually gets bigger as time goes by. It will help a young predator to understand how their muscles react at their commands.

2) When the first stage is behind, it’s time to learn how to bring eaten objects back. Again, no dependence on reflexes – the child consciously makes their muscles work in reverse.

3) Once a man-eater knows the basics, they have to train their stomach to stop or start digestion on command which is crucial for keeping a prey alive if they want it. It’s a much harder task demanding self-discipline and patience since now they have to shut down their natural instincts. But in the end an experienced man-eater is able to manipulate their body without thinking.

Speaking of the public attitude… There are two common scenarios in terms of the family itself. A man-eater is either hated and neglected, or washed in love since parents know: it’s almost impossible for their baby to receive affection from anyone else. As tough as they seem, man-eaters are very sensitive when it comes to social connections. For example, they are extremely loyal to their friends and romantic partners; it’s one of the reasons why merger exists (a man-eater and their prey combine in body and soul). So, public judgment can hit them hard. Besides, psychologically, it’s often challenging for a man-eater to accept themselves. Realization may even traumatize them if it comes as a result of a tragic accident or harassment (the latter has happened to Vincent). Especially, because urges don't come until they are 18. Teenage hood is already not very fun, considering constant mood swings and body changes – insatiable hunger for something that isn’t meant to be food doesn’t help at all. However, the “first time” can be less overwhelming if someone helps the newbie, volunteering as their prey (usually it’s safe for the latter), and if there are people who support and love the predator unconditionally.

In other words, a man-eater can be brought up with minimal damage to their mental and physical health only if they are not struggling with their nature alone. It defines what kind of person they will finally become. Vincent’s parents were good people who gave him all the warmth he needed, teaching him that he and others like him aren’t monsters – he is compassionate because he had a living example of compassion. Meanwhile, the unlucky predators usually grow into heartless beasts lacking any sense of mercy to anyone. They despise social norms, see humans as lesser beings (call them “prey-things”), appear to be animalistic and psychopathic.

P. S.:  A bit more information about merger. It’s the only option for a man-eater to stop devouring humans without unpleasant consequences for themselves. I’ve been thinking about predatory hunger as a metaphor of sorts which, beside other things, can mean searching for a partner, the “second half”, literally. When a predator and their prey fuse, hollowness within the former disappears because all their body gets reconstructed: their height reduces, they lose control over their insides, their teeth become normal. At last, they are complete. However, not many man-eaters actually go through this because they don’t want to steal freedom from their loved ones. Usually, merger is used as an emergency solution when there is no other way for two people to stay together.

Taking comprehension of your situation

Fyodor knew from the start of how self-neglecting you could be. He doesn’t really do much, believing that you can take care of yourself without his word. You ‘just needed more focus on yourself’ is what he always thought. But when he soon realizes it growing worse, he can’t help but be a little worried.

However, instead of immediately talking to you about it, Fyodor kept his silence. When you come up to him, he’ll play his usual game with you—gentle smiles when the time calls for it, delicate hand gestures and touching, whatever you bring forth to him; he always has the same answer to it. Yet as you feel his hands more cautious of your face, eyes almost examining you instead of looking at you as lovingly—you can’t help to understand the slight change in it as time passes by…

He may always be busy but simple glances over you are enough to keep him updated with your state. If he sees you haven’t showered in days, he’ll bring it up casually. Same for the times he doesn’t notice you drinking water as often. Fyodor will say something simple, not really bothered enough to do anything if you don’t comply; since he already said it clearly the first time. He didn’t help much with your state, only bothering assist when you end up falling asleep in a place he needs to be in or having straight up fainting. Well, that was before at least. Now’s new.

Tea Dates

It’s rather difficult to call it a ‘party’ when it’s just the two of you, and besides—a date sounds more romantic and calm, does it not?

Whenever you’re finished from work and Fyodor can still see some stamina in you, he’ll come up to you and interlock your hand with his. Fyodor can easily tell if you’ve eaten or drank anything by just looking at your exhausted face, or after asking simple questions about food that you fail to realize that he was actually trying to find a specific answer from you. And if he’s certain you haven’t, he’ll rub your hand gently as he asks if you’d mind a small tea time with him. He never says it as a date, but with the way you two spend it, he definitely asks these little invites for an indirect one.

You two either stay at home or go to his casual cafe, which you end up also finding a favorite to overtime. Even if you didn’t drink tea—there were so many delicacies to choose from that you can’t help but feel much more relaxed after, with about two drinks and perhaps even a small plate of bite-sized bakery treats. And that’s what Fyodor wants. As he sees you smiling while you enjoy the taste, he almost mirrors it—small curves meeting his lips. He doesn’t say it, but he’s glad you’ve drank and eaten something today.

Showers with him

Fyodor was opposed to the idea at first. He doesn’t like the concept of you seeing his body completely nude, let alone be wet as well. It’s too vulnerable, and pretty vulgar depending on which mind the words go to. Fyodor thinks vice versa for your body as well. As much as he likes to see your body, he’s not so into seeing it naked all the time. He also finds it ‘too childish’ and not mature for your and his age.

But as he realizes you struggle to even get inside the shower sometimes, some… changes have been made. At first, Fyodor was hesitant to help out, but a cry of exhaustion from you while you were in the shower was more than enough to click his head unscrewed, knocking calmly on the open door as he’d ask if it’s okay to step further inside. You allow him, letting him help you out by washing your hair as you sit down on a stool or soaping your delicate skin to all rinse it off with water later. He always listens to you as well, having open ears to whatever you need to ask, say, or rant out.

He sometimes also joins you in your showers. Usually when you two are both extremely exhausted. It’s not frequent because Fyodor is still not that comfortable with the idea, but it still happens. For you, he allows it, because it’s clear to him that it’s an effective way to make you think more about your hygiene, and also because he can be sure of how you treat yourself inside the shower like this—because even if you do get inside, there’s no certain say if you’ll actually shower unless he himself is with you, is there?

Notes while he’s out

Fyodor isn’t always at home, and you knew that. While he has an office in the home you two share, he still has to meet up with his coworkers—or at least that’s what he tells you, and you choose to believe your man at all cost. Given such, while you worked from home, Fyodor leaves little notes and letters in places you’ll easily spot, even if you’re super exhausted.

Fyodor doesn’t necessarily like to show too much affection nor is constant of talking about his concern, because he sort of.. thinks it’s your fault for being so self-neglecting most of the time. He prefers you to understand your own state and situation before you come up to him for help if you need it. Though, perhaps he can assist you to get started on it.

Usually on the dinner table or by your work desk are envelopes colored in a shade even your exhausted little eyes can notice. The notes are marked with such elegance and effort. There are times they aren’t all so wrapped up, just the paper itself, but those are only when he’s extremely in a rush. And for a man like him, it’s pretty rare. When he’s about to leave while you’re still asleep, or you’re in another room, he’ll place a letter in spots you’ll walk by before leaving. They hold messages asking how you were feeling. At most he leaves three of these around the home, which help you recollect your thoughts when you attend to them. Sometimes less or more depending on how long he’ll be out for.

They actually help because you’re able to reply to them by waking up to express how you feel, and remind you of doing your basic tasks like drinking water or eating. Perhaps you can say it’s Fyodor’s way of asking updates from you without him actually speaking for it and while he’s gone, but it’s fair to believe that he only does this to get you awake throughout the day and remember your tasks. His notes of "How is my love doing? Have they eaten yet?" were but cliffs to throw you bottling your emotions away as you carefully reply to the letter, tired and needy for a conversation. You’d write things like how thirsty you were, making you realize that maybe you should actually tend to that as you have been neglecting it more than enough times necessary. It’s more of an effort than just texting, but it gets the job done. Both for you and Fyodor as he smiles reading your replies in, usually, hazy handwriting.

His own way of making you take vitamins

You can be very stubborn sometimes, intentionally or not. While the notes help you remember to drink water and eat—they lack the ability to make you do an important task, taking vitamins. Since you’ve let go of yourself quite a bit, you’ve been needing to take more vitamins like b12. You’re mostly dehydrated and sleepy, so the notes can only go so far against how hefty your light-headedness can be.

Though it can’t be helped, Fyodor tries to understand you can’t always listen to words on paper, even if it’s written by him—so he’s come up with another way that is usually the most effective one for you. It’s simple; food. Fyodor would bake you a tray of soft food, usually cupcakes. If you weren’t into that, Fyodor will make something else that’s still similar. It’s not for a wholesome moment as you might think, as he actually has a more proper reason on why he does this. It’s to hide your pills in them… the same way how pet-owners would do to their pets. Look- it’s not like there’s much of a choice, is there? Fyodor doesn’t like to be very verbal with his reminders of you taking your pills, and you don’t/can’t really comply most of the time either, so it had to be done.

While Fyodor isn’t opposed to teasing you by making you take the pill that’s in between his own fingers, he’s not always there for that to happen every time. Plus, using food instead helps in two categories for you—while you’re being well-fed, you’re also taking your pills. But don’t expect him to always be doing this to you. As stated, Fyodor will only make a tray, enough for half a month for you to eat on, and it’s up to you on how to take your pills there on. They’re always so obvious in the refrigerator, and mostly very (but not overwhelmingly) flavorful that will also cause you to drink water after. So really, this trick helps in three ways instead of two.

Your home strangely ‘motivates’ you (bonus)

Can’t think of a better title for this category. Anyway… Fyodor has one last way of keeping you aware of your own surroundings and well-being while he’s not home… and it’s something you probably would last realize out of all listed down. And it’s having a home that somehow makes you have this motivation to do the tasks that require a bit more effort than most—such as showering, cooking your own food, making your bed after waking up, and a lot more.

You find it hard to explain, but you just adore the sight of your and his minimalistic home, lured with natural light and faint colors of lit candles with a scent pleasing enough to make you smile. The books you two have are all neatly stacked, with a fresh bouquet of flowers always on the white table in the hallway—your home always felt like some sort of aesthetic to live in. Because you had a poor performance of taking care of yourself, your home isn’t always this beautifully set up either. As such, it makes you want to act like it while it’s there, playing through little routines to ‘appreciate your home’. Similar to those routines you’d see on the internet, specifically talking.

To you, it was fun to play that way, but little did you know that it was Fyodor’s way of tricking your mind into following a routine while he’s not home to remind you about it. He only seems to do this on days he’ll be gone for more than one night, aware the notes won’t keep you alert for long. It’s hard to keep up the effort every single day anyway. All he really benefits from this scenario is a better version of yourself as you smile at his return, hands hugging him with your hair damped from just taking a shower. While Fyodor kisses your head an ‘I’m home’, his gaze catches the same white table with all the new and previous flowers he bought for you—delicately placed inside an expensive vase as he replies with a smile, thankful that his efforts can help you even if it’s a slow progress. For the sake of a better world, he’s willing to take actions to have his lover taking care of themself better too.

Pretty in pink: Kazuki K & subversion (an homage)

Pink is fresh. It is a happy color. It is positive. It is a sign of good health. That says a lot about Kazuki Kurusu. He has a bubbly personality, his optimism is brimming, especially after the seventh episode. It sure helps that Rei and Miri have become his ethos, have accepted to welcome the changes after five years of losing Yuzu. Usually, he wears his emotions on his sleeve. (But I think that’s only a front.) I love him. Right to the 11th episode, he has totally embraced the new life he’s been leading with Rei and Miri. The fact that he wanted it all along but was apprehensive because of his traumatic experiences made him cautious of the way he dealt with Rei and Miri. Rei’s determination on the second balcony scene was the catalyst because he knew how much K wanted it.

That fond looks K gives toward his family.

In the West, we are past that era where men cannot subvert pink’s gendered stereotype. You see men wear pink dress shirts, pink suits and other piece of clothing and they look spectacularly good. It is still a test of bravery for some though. Small boys still despise this color perceiving it as a girly stuff. New mothers try to veer their daughters away from this color by consciously not purchasing and introducing pink-coloured merchandise to their daughters’ color palette only to be disappointed because of peer pressure in the kindergartens. You know Elsa and Anna and the beautiful ladies of Disney and their association with pink? Too common, too banal.

However, “in contemporary Japanese culture, says (Barbara) Nemitz, pink is perceived as a masculine and mournful color that represents ‘young warriors who fall in battle while in the full bloom of life.’” Slain young samurai. All right. (Thanks to PA Works, it didn’t come to that though.)

It is also the color of sakura, cherry blossoms, which are the Japanese’s favourite flower. They do picnics just enjoying and gazing at the beauty of cherry blossoms (and later, peach blossoms). The Hanami. Some Japanese migrants adapted this ritual/event to their host countries and it is a sight to behold.

Different shades/nuances of pink worn by K and the moms

Pink has long been associated with homosexuality. The pink triangle. The lgbtq movement reclaimed the former badge of shame used by the Nazis incorporating it into the pride flag later. Though almost 70 per cent of the Japanese society supports it, it still is a huge problem to come out.

While there are no legal implications, coming out remains taboo for many in Japan for fear of being ostracized. A survey of young LGBTQ people published last year found high levels of mental anguish, including suicidal thoughts. More than 90% said they couldn’t talk about their sexuality with their guardians. Very few people in national politics or the corporate world are openly gay, although homosexual themes and LGBTQ celebrities are a staple of television and other forms of entertainment.

“Buddy Daddies” is not marketed as BL, but the show makers can write whatever about their characters. Sometimes implying them without direct confirmation. It depends how the viewers interpret it.

But K also symbolizes subversion. K’s characterization nonetheless goes against of what is perceived to be the norm in the Japanese society. He is both a nurturer and a protector, though Rei certainly will take over this “protector/saviour” task without any question. From the looks of it, he’d do anything for K and Miri.

Rei always in front to gauge the danger

An odd man out, K does the household chores while he can carry an adult man without any problem. We have seen him does it more than twice already. He’s loud and conspicuous. In Japan, you must never stand out. (<< - Shogo’s videos are highly recommended to watch btw!) He (and Rei) (go) goes against the rules. They blur the gender stereotyping in all aspects of life.

The crew presented the scenarios as if they were a matter of fact, normal, without making fun or light of it. No further commentary. One can say that it is subversive in a sense they want the audience to become aware of their thoughts on adoption, new family dynamics, the bureaucratic hurdles of enrolling your children and better access to daycare centres/schools to the ever-present mothers who have to give up their jobs and dedicate their lives to their kids, etc.

(It was unfortunate that they didn’t follow it up with Misaki Unasaka.)

Why do I get this feeling that one way or another “Buddy Daddies” had been the show makers’ thinly veiled social commentary on their society?

I've been trying to stick to the same for the longest time that I work on theirs arcs, but it always seems forced. Maybe the lie he believe can be similar, i don't know...

Character Development: The Lie They Believe

In most stories, the protagonist changes in some way by the end of the story. How much they change, and how that change ties into the bigger story, depends on the type of story it is.

In stories with multiple main characters with a relatively equal role in driving the story forward (Six of Crows, The Raven Boys, Station Eleven, or A Game of Thrones for example) all of these characters will have their own change arc, especially if the story is at least partly character-driven. Change arcs begin with something lacking within the character's self. That thing that is lacking stems from some past event that created an internal wound, and that wound is almost always the result of a misconception--the lie your character believes.

For example, let's say your character is a renowned smuggler whose been tasked with taking a valuable treasure on a harrowing journey to its new home. Their internal conflict is that they want the job because of the income and bragging rights, but they're harboring self-doubt that they're the best person for the job. What happened in their past to give them this self-doubt? What is the wound? Well, perhaps they failed to successfully complete a similar mission years ago. So, why does failing one similar mission (when they've completed several others without issue) enough to undermine their self-confidence? It's because of the lie they believe... Maybe the lie they believe is that good smugglers never fail. Or maybe the lie they believe is that they were somehow responsible for the failure when they weren't. Either way, it's because of this misconception that they feel the way they do.

So, "the lie they believe" is not something that's usually shared by all the characters with change arcs. It can be if it makes sense for the story, but typically that wouldn't be the case. Instead, for each of your characters, you need to look at their individual internal conflict, figure out the wound that caused it, and figure out the lie they believe that led to this wound.
