When you can't figure out a good pun for your conference paper title, don't worry, there's always alliteration to fall back on
— the kind of thing somebody who just put seven words beginning with C into a paper title might say to make themselves feel better
#actually there are eight words beginning with C#but one of them is Cycle (as in Ulster Cycle)#and that's a soft C so doesn't contribute to the alliterative impact#academia#finn is not doing a phd

When the youth [Mordred] saw [Gawain's] wounds, he turned away, grieving as bitterly as any man could ever grieve [...] He went to another chamber and fell down upon a bed and wept and cried and wrung his hands and tore all his clothes. [...] [Agravain] found the youth tearing his hair and his clothing. And when the youth saw his lord [Agravain] before him, he neither moved nor left off his grieving. "What is this, you bastard," said the lord, "what are you grieving about? Don't you see that I have been healed?" "Indeed," he replied, "I don't care, because for that good I see a greater ill." "And what is that?" asked the knight. "Ah, noble man," he replied, "in there they have mortally wounded Sir Gawain, your brother and mine." "Gawain?" he exclaimed. And thereupon his grief was so great that he fainted.
-Vulgate Lancelot, c. 1220, trans. Samuel N. Rosenberg and Carleton W. Carroll
They pushed and shoved at one another and Mordred fell backwards from the force of Gawain’s spear and landed on his shoulders, badly wounded. Sir Gawain leapt onto the man and seized him by the head. His grief was ready for this moment but so, unfortunately, was destiny. He pulled out a short knife from a silver sheath intending to stab Mordred in the throat with it; but the cut never occurred. His hand slipped and slid on the shiny chainmail as Mordred slyly shot a hand under the man on top and heaved him off, then drew a knife of his own and stabbed Gawain through a gap in his helmet, through his head and up into his brain. Sir Gawain was gone, that good man of arms. [...] "He was a giant amongst men, that’s for sure," Sir Mordred [said]. "This was the good Sir Gawain, the most considerate, the most gracious man ever to live under God’s Earth, the strongest with weapons, the happiest in battle and the noblest and most courteous in the king’s hall. He was openly praised as having the bravery of a lion and if you had known him, sir king, in the land where he lived, his wisdom, his knighthood, his accomplishments, his leadership, his courtesy, his courage, his fighting skills, then you would lament his death for the rest of your life." This traitor allowed a tear to trickle down his cheeks. Then he turned around and said no more but went away weeping, cursing the day that destiny had dealt him such a blow.
-Alliterative Morte Arthure, c. 1400, trans. Richard Scott-Robinson
I love weaving together strands from different Arthurian versions, because you can find incredible parallels like this. In the Vulgate Cycle Lancelot, we see young Mordred (in his pre-villain days) breaking down in terror at the thought of losing his older brother, so grief-stricken that he "fell down upon a bed and wept and cried and wrung his hands and tore all his clothes."
And yet in an ironic twist, in the Alliterative Morte Arthure it's Mordred himself who ends up killing Gawain at the end of their story. Yet we still see the same love and hero-worship for his brother that the younger Vulgate Mordred had, and like his younger self, Morte Arthure Mordred breaks down in tears at Gawain's death (no longer a prospect but now a reality), despite having been its cause. He "went away weeping, cursing the day that destiny had dealt him such a blow" - filled with grief and remorse at what he's done, but too late to undo it.

Could I ask Bart for the hc asks?
BART MY LOVE <3
Headcanon A: realistic
he just shows up at his friends houses whenever he wants to hang out. he especially got into the habit of inviting himself over to the kent farm when he was living with the garricks, because it was right there. ma kent adores him because she can feed him so much. bart adores ma kent because she feeds him so much. incredibly mutualistic relationship right there
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
somehow dox, his dog, acquires a connection to the speed force. manchester, alabama, becomes somewhat accustomed to the sight of impulse zipping across town going NO!!!! WHAT IS IN YOUR MOUTH!!!!! SPIT IT OUT!!!!!! SPIT THAT OUT!!!!!! as he chases down a small normal-looking dog that seems to keep teleporting.
max says this is karma. he's entirely too amused by it. until dox digs up all of his chives in about 0.4 seconds flat, anyway.
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
like i know the real reason is that geoff is stupid but in-universe the reason he doesn't use scouts in tt03 is that he's still dealing with the rammys of owaw and Experiencing Death as a scout + wwyj just kinda forcing him to confront that before he was ready. of course, then he just experiences death as himself, so. oops?
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
ive said this before and i'm sure i'll say it again but FUCK geoff making him into kid flash. he's impulse for life and the only alternative i'll accept is bart mercury. (this includes a bit where he's sitting around brainstorming about it with his friends like okay but bart mercury doesn't have the same alliterative thing going on that max mercury does... and cassie snorts and starts giggling and just goes. bart bercury.) (this is his name in the core four gc for the next few weeks.)

Authentic Story of the Shining Force - Saint Fencer Max - Chapter 5
Translation notes:
All enemies so far were recognizable from the game, but here they seem to be original.
This might be Boken?? The only character in the game with a big backpack and hair. And he does show up in Dragonia in-game.
About the Ancient names. Mega Max is clearly alliterative in both languages. Giga Cain is almost that. K sounds in japanese become g sounds once you add a dakuten (゙), so they're associated. And in english it kinda works out accidentally, because a G is basically a C with extras too. Vega Darksol though? No link. The pattern is lost. I'm kinda mad about it.
From an author's comment: "These two also appear in Tanuma-sensei's Shining Force (lol). Are they official members?" Yuichiro Tanuma is the artist for another Shining Force manga, Descent of Great Intention, whose scans I only found today (warning for a lot of ecchi/nudity/nsfw, i'm still going through but what i've seen is pretty horny already). And yes, these background characters also appear there. This manga was published before that one, though, so this is their first appearance.
"But Claire you're dodging the main topic, Cain just did exposition of the whole lore" yes yes, the similarities between it and the GBA version are what made me interested in this manga to begin with, but I've decided there's so much to compare between all versions of Max and Cain I'll make a whole huge ass post about it instead. Look forward to that.
I will mention however that Cain's bodysuit here reminds me a bit of the manual picture with Max being brought into Guardiana for the first time.
I did say we had to talk about Prompt (and then promptly forgot it in the first draft of these notes). Like Waral, Prompt is not seen anywhere in the beta map. And here, it is depicted as only ruins instead of the country it is in the final game. That in itself wouldn't mean much, however, Chapter 7, where Prompt is, has a lot more weirdness in it. It has peculiar unused content implying a whole deleted cutscene with Cain, Adam, Chaos and Darksol in Metapha, and it freezes the Debug Mode's Battle Test any time you Egress (also, Chapter Selection won't even load it from a save file of another chapter, which doesn't happen for any other chapter). Of course, I don't know the actual code of the game, but this gives me the impression that this Chapter 7 had some other Egress point that got removed later. Basically, if there's one part of the game you can expect to have changed late in development, it's Prompt and Metapha, so it could have been only ruins as the manga depicts here, and as I mentioned in the last chapter, some place or machine called Tenochtitlan could have existed.
Oh boy I keep forgetting notes this time! The goddamn chapter title. Both times the Chaos Breaker is mentioned here, it is written with the usual katakana, but also the kanji 対暗黒魔法剣 (Anti-Darkness Magic Sword) as furigana. I felt it was too clunky to mention both sword names in the dialogue, especially when Cain was already pushing the limits of a lot of speech bubbles this chapter. But anyway, yeah, it's supposed to be a bit of a title drop there.
I. forgot. yet. another. note. When Otrant recognizes the robot using an explosion spell, the manga actually says 核爆烈, a mix of 核 (nuclear) and 爆烈 (explosion). However, I couldn't find this exact wording in dictionaries, only fictional works, so it might just dramatic flavor, since nuclear explosions Don't Work Like That. I kept it ambiguous in the translation to not raise questions in the middle of the action, but it's worth noting since both the aforementioned Descent of Great Intention manga and the UK Sonic the Comic version of Shining Force bring up nuclear themes at some point.
#shining series#shining force#saint fencer max#saint fencer max translation#sf cain#so long man i miss you every day#i considered noting in the notes themselves that his sacrifice here is a bit similar to a scene in shining force neo#but i may be seeing too much#both just happen to be a sacrifice with an explosion and a cain#could be anything#also rewatching sfneo to check that already reminded me of how bad that story is so. yeah#not bringing it up#(<- this idiot is lying!)#(this idiot found scans of the sfneo manga and it doesn't seem nearly as bad as the game)#(because the game is a slog so compress everything into two volumes might have helped)#(also this idiot has somehow only now figured out masaki wachi worked in neo)#(this man will haunt me till the end of my days)#sf darksol#sfm max#sfm otrant#sfm lowe#sfm lou#not even tagging tao and hans they're not doing much#you'd think tao would have something to say about the ancients' reveal just like she had before but nah#no one besides max and cain are actual characters here to be honest they're just roles

when i originally learned that lanolin was a sheep i got so mad. we couldve had lanolin the pangolin. like. peak was right there.
i mean lanolin is a chemical secreted by sheep to protect their skin when being sheared, so it wouldn't have made much sense for another animal, but it would have been an INCREDIBLE naming choice for the sound of the words alone.
that being said, i really like when names rhyme in fiction, or at least have parts that sound semi-similar. nightlight is a valid warrior cats name. pinkie pie is alliteration. i feel like we should get more of that in sonic! whisper's full name is alliterative, so it's not like sonic team is shying away from it entirely. that jester character hasn't had a name reveal yet unless i missed it, so what if it were fester? their species is a little ambiguous but they seem to be either feline or canine, what if their name started with C for cat or D for dog?
maybe in the future we'll get a new character with a name similar to these!

!!!NEW REVIEW!!!

released 82 years to the day, Chuck Jones heralds the start of an incredibly important directorial year for him with The Bird Came C.O.D. quite a feat in itself, given that one would never expect this and The Dover Boys to be made within the same year! C.O.D. marks the introduction of one of two yellow cat characters with alliterative C names to be fathered by Chuck Jones: the ever-short lived Conrad Cat. if anything, this cartoon definitely asserts why he didn’t have any intended staying power. cast as a palm tree delivery man, the ever enigmatic Conrad finds himself up against his greatest foe (no, somehow, not himself)—a pigeon with an attitude problem in a magician’s hat.
#you too will make the same face after watching this cartoon#(i do not like it)#< i made these tags before i even took notes to review it. this still stands true x100#lt#looney tunes#the bird came c.o.d.#jones#reviews

Alright, here’s a gangsta rap in the alliterative style of ancient Norse poetry: Mighty menacing moves, making mad cash, Ruthless rulers ride, rollin’ real fast. Fierce foes fall, feel the full force, Gritty gangsters grab, golden goods of course. Hustling hard, heavy hitters hold, Bold brothers bring, battles bold. Savage streets sing, songs of strong strife, Wily warriors wield, weapons like a knife. Dark deeds done, under dim dusk, Loyal lads leap, living lives of lust. Cunning clans clash, claiming cold crowns, Fearsome foes flee, falling far down. Grimy ghettos grow, greatness gained, Shady streets show, scars sustained. Epic empires rise, echo endless nights, Stalwart soldiers stand, seeking streetlights. Dreadful deeds done, daring in the dark, Bitter battles break, brothers leave a mark. Hallowed hustlers' hearts, holdin’ heavy hope, Rough roads ridden, righteous in the scope. Menacing moves made, marking mighty might, Steadfast soldiers soar, shining in the night. Fierce foes fade, future forged in flame, Gangsta glory gained, gory is the game.
I'm gonna give this like, a solid C, maybe C+. Most of it doesn't really work as rap, but there were some standout lines.

HS^2 reread till p407 - reaction post
So, in preparation of Homestuck 2 restarting, I’ve reread the whole first few pages.
First I reread the epilogues recap page, then the story proper up until page 407.
It was a good refreshener, because a lot of events were already gone from my memory or very vague.
Which, given the nature of Candy Earth C, is rather appropriate, heh.
Reactions under the cut!
That Dirk called his ship Theseus may say something on how he views his mission.
Then again, he declared himself the villain of the story.
page 4: he called authors alliterative, I wouldn't really call 'AH' that, nor his full name.
Rose really goes hard on the 'being a robot' thing. I guess between Aradiabot, Jadebot, and AR, it was time for someone to unequivocally enjoy the state.
p5 : Cool to see his 'omniscience' is only pseudo, like Doc Scratch' was. He didn't know about the missing landing gear.
Hah, and Rose still sees Dirk as heroic. Pretty blind for a Seer of Light.
p6 : OOh, I still had dark mode on, I realize. Let's change that 'n return to the old format, it influences the feel of the story, especially Dirk' bright text.
p9 : You know, it feels like a missed opportunity not to command him to shit his desk.
p12 : Okay, pretty sure I didn't spot Jade's mug on the well, flower mug on my initial read. I own that mug, actually.
And oh yeah, it was a three-year journey to the new planet, nice parallel to the travel time between Universe B1 and B2.
p13 : So, uh, Bro had a relationship with Barack Obama, I'm reading this right, right?
p15 : Dirk claims to have researched his trollsona extensively, yet doesn't display their blood colour on his shirt, smh.
p17: Riiiight, Terezi was aware of Dirk's narration, as a Mind player, right?
And hah, as a troll, with Alternia's awkward synonyms, her roasting Dirk for his verbose prose? Gold.
Pff, and I forgot Dirk was tired of Rose's psychoanalysis, too.
p33: Right, both paths were distinguished by the arrows.
p34: It's heartwarming to see Jake actually having mastered the supposedly basic (yet oft neglected) skill of housekeeping.
p38: We never really saw Jake have Skaian dreams, did we? His Prospit self never woke up on account of a peanut allergy.
I wonder if the dreams of a non-awoken dreamself could have ever been prophetic...
And anyway, he's his ascended self now.
Hmm, but right, his dreambubbleself did have a rather prescient twist to it, in the form of Brain Ghost Dirk...
p41: Speak of the devil, I forgot about this part here, heheh.
Soooo, wait, we're getting back in muddy waters.
Jake is from the post-retcon timeline, where Vriska was on the meteor.
But the ghosts in the Furthest Ring weren't duplicated by the retcon.
If we assume they only met the post-retcon kids chronologically (for them) afterwards, there were a bunch of conversations that happened twice.
And Aranea's ghost 'survived' the Game Over timeline aka got thrown back to the Furthest Ring.
Still, it's gold to have Brain Ghost Dirk be his own self, distinct from ascended Dirk.
p47: "DIRK: You’ve spent years feeling sorry for yourself, totally convinced you made the wrong choices and that it’s all over. And it’s easier that way, isn’t it? If you’re a lost cause you don’t have to try to be better."
That's the challenge for the Candy timeline people isn't it? Continuing to try even if it feels like nothing matters.
Brain Ghost Dirk stopped correcting Jake there that he didn't actually was Jane's running mate, since he wasn't that Dirk.
Well, 'I' and 'you' could be seen as located between air-quotes, of course...
P54: Jake being hopeful again probably triggered the return of Brain Ghost Dirk
P59, 60: The new kids’ quirks are something to get used to again
P64: Almost seems like a Hope glow, around the car
P70 : By shedding his purple sweater, we now see Tavros is dressed in layers similarly to Calliope & Caliborn.
P90 : Note how she doesn't even really counted Jake as part of her family, there.
P95 : Gotta love cross-culture influences on Earth C, like the carapace derp face.
P96 : Introducing the world's most pollutive missile.
P97 : You'd think once it reached critical speed it wouldn't need the propulsion anymore. Maybe the sails actually serve as (stellar) wind breakers, hahah, and the giant pipe is a countermeasure.
p101 : Showing Karkat has started living at human hours since he's asleep at 5 AM, n'aww.
p105 : Meat timeline folks just keep on being couped up in small spaces for extended periods, don't they?
Meat timeline just really focuses on the cabin fever side of things.
p108 : I swear I forgot Dave pointing this out :p101
p109 : In the story people & the appearance of them in other's minds is important. It's the same for the old Homestuck kids.
Who they are and who they were to us are two separate things.
At the same time, in story, who they are to each other is also very important. Brain Ghost Dirk's a culmination of that.
p114 : Dave really just drew the short stick there w/r his best friends' fates, didn't he.
And Bro still casts a long shadow.
At least it's good to see Dave is in a somewhat good place. Just a little sad he has to basically be a hermit apart from some close friends to achieve it.
p115 : So Karkat never really was close with Rose, interesting.
p130 : I wonder if Dirk started discarding things "pointlessly difficult and irritating" as a way to cope with his isolation growing up.
Roxy had the carapaces around, he only had seagulls...
And eesh, being your ascended self, as in, knowing full well what you'd do in any situation... Really kind of sucks, doesn't it? Not seeing room for growth for yourself.
p131 : So, recap: A2 was coded blue and had a purple game design. A1 probably had the reverse.
B1 was coded red and had a lime green game design, B2 was the reverse.
The C universe is coded white (see: the door they went through) and the game design will be cyan.
Meanwhile, Dirk and Rose's species might be associated with the color purple & orange.
Kind of makes you think of Prospit & Derse, doesn't it?
Makes you wonder if the trolls in A1 were also guided by their universe's gods, or not.
p133 : 10:25 hours ago
p135 : "ROSE: It's amazing what pieces of inconsequential information your mind can recall at a moment's notice, a whole decade after they were last relevant or interesting to anyone.
ROSE: ...
ROSE: I think I missed this."
Appropriate, given that it's been so long since Homestuck ended.
p141 : Basically, Dirk's DNA was used to animate the result of the alchemization. Not ecto-alchemologization, but more like... alchemogenesis?
p144 : Trial 'n error creation of species, with of course, Dirk focusing on the equine & Rose on the cephaloid. (Is that the right Latin word for tentacle-y?)
Right, Rosebot was only a projection of Rose's consciousness.
Weird to think stories about the Psionic survived two squashed rebellions. Then again, he was )(IC's Helmsman for the remainder of Alternian history.
"ROSE: Now [Earth] is protected, in the steady hands of a duly-elected ruler, sure to have a boring and uneventful perpetual term in office."
Ah, if only Rose could see into the bonus stories :P Guess they don't count as part of her domain. ;)
"ROSE: What value is a marriage, temporary domestic bliss, if all is lost?
ROSE: You understand this bargain.
ROSE: At least, you should. It's one that was made to leave you alone.
ROSE: Is your resentment towards my choice about Kanaya, or about V–"
Not sure I understand this fully. Does Rose feel like she had to leave Kanaya because Terezi didn't give up on Vriska?
p146: Calliope embraces irrelevance as Dirk embraces the opposite
P150: Forgot about this part. Good for Jade, not being kept down.
P160: Guess Caaliope has a preference for orsnge juice’s strings because it’s a bit like tendons from red meat? Maybe?
Trials and errors like Dirk’s with DNA, but for food. Wouldn’t Dave have still have codes from the meteor trip?
P171: Getting insight into how red & black romance works for Vrissy, might help us understand where it all went wrong for Vriska.
P172: Vriska trolling herself there
P194: Vrissy - Harry - Tavvy - Yiffy?
P215 : Oh right, Roxy lived in the Carapacian Kingdom? So then Harry just went to and from the human kingdom for school? And the human reporters have crossed the border to report?
P222: Derpy black-haired kid hiding a surprising amount of brawn. Truly, Tavros fits right in with Jake, Jade & John.
P223: Gotta love John was waiting on the "highest point of the building there", while they had to "ascend".
P232: "from somewhere out of a half-remembered dream, comes the sensation of falling. A burning golden city. A girl's screaming." Oooh, [S] Descend reference!
P234: Ohhhh, their naming their daughter like so wasn't 'really' serious, but a result of a a game between them taken too far, I really forgot that!
P240: Forgot that Jane really did <3< Gamzee.
P268: And that the trees walked
P286: Got to say, Aradia and Dave’s unruliness reaaly meshes well with the narrative device of Alt!Calliope’s speech+captions
P339: Maintainer of Peace and Plenty is sure one way to fill in the role of Maid of Life!
P401: Candy John crammed himself into a house-shaped box in a spiritual sense, Meat John got crammed in one literally.
Got to say, I wonder if the June Egbert crowd will get theirs in the end or not, with what John was not saying here. Mostly it might be the topic of masculinity and how to fill that in, I personally think.
P404 : Don’t tell me Dirk & Roxy have the Hiveswap portals under their respective curtains
P405: Didn’t we visit the meteor on Candy Earth before?
Or was that in the Epilogues/bonus stories?
P406: “the natUre of space and time is a little finicky in here” as in, time flows faster? Or geography & history are just weird and inconsistent?
See: Jake having gotten send divorce papers according to the epilogues, or The Felt, Ms Paint & Spades Slick ending up on Earth C according to the snapchat logs...
"CALLIOPE: [...] as far as i can see, there's simply no way for Us to commUnicate with the world oUtside the black hole.
CALLIOPE: i woUld certainly be very sUrprised to find oUt that anyone had managed sUch a thing!
JOHN: ...right."
Terezi & John communicated just fine through John's Dad's PDA. Is there anything the device is not capable of?!
Ooh boy, and now I'm caught up again!
Seems like the "prelude" to Beyond Canon is done now!
Wow, feels oddly comforting to be in the thick of it again.
I'm just going to buckle myself to this ride again.
The idea is to not go too deep into analysis this time around, but hahah yeah, that boat'll float till it sinks.

Drive Your Corvette to Work Day
Many Corvette owners own other cars as well, and often only drive their Corvettes on special occasions. Corvettes are regularly driven on beautiful days or are taken to car shows, but usually aren’t used as commuter cars for work. But, today is different—today is Drive Your Corvette to Work Day. Sponsored by Mid America Motorworks, a supplier of aftermarket Corvette parts and accessories, the day has taken place since 2001. The goal is to get as many Corvette owners as possible around the world to drive their car, in order to show how popular the car is. It takes place on the Friday closest to June 30, the day in 1953 when the first Corvette came off the General Motors assembly line.
Harley J. Earl was no stranger to designing cars. He redesigned the LaSalle in the late 1920s, designed the Buick Y-Job—which is seen as being the first concept car, and also designed the GM Le Sabre. He then began working on “Project Opel,” which would turn into the Corvette. In its design, he took inspiration from the Jaguar XK120. On January 17, 1953, the Corvette was introduced at GM’s traveling Motorama display, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.
Later that year, on June 30, the first Corvette for consumers came off the assembly line at the GM plant in Flint, Michigan. Tony Kleiber, a worker at the plant, drove the first car off the line. The Corvette had been named by Myron Scott, a photographer for Chevrolet. After looking in the dictionary for a word that started with a “C,” in order to give the make and model phrase an alliterative effect, he found “corvette,” the name for a small warship that was fast and easy to maneuver.
At a time when most cars were built out of steel, the Corvette was the first sports car with a body made completely of fiberglass. There were only 300 built the first year, all of which were white convertibles with red interiors and black canvas tops. They otherwise used standard Chevrolet parts, such as the “Blue Flame” six-cylinder engine, and the two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Still, they could go from the speed of 0-60 in 11 seconds and could reach a speed of 110 mph. They had no exterior door handles, and no windows as well, just plastic curtains. They had a sticker price of $3,513, which is $32,979 in 2018 dollars. All were equipped with a $91 heater and $145 AM radio, which was added to the sticker price. 1953 models are worth much more now: the third Corvette produced was sold for 1.06 million dollars in 2006.
As of 2018, there have been seven generations of Corvettes (C1-C7). V8 engines were an option beginning in 1955, and 9 out of 10 buyers selected the option that year; all Corvettes have since been equipped with V8s. By the 1960s, the Corvette was known as America’s favorite sports car. The second generation (C2) of the car was produced from 1963-1967 and was known as the Sting Ray. One of the most popular Corvettes of all time is the 1963 model, which is unique for having a split rear window.
Corvettes have been produced in Flint, Michigan, St. Louis, Missouri, and since 1981, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where the National Corvette Museum also is also located. There were issues when making the 4th generation of the car, thus only one 1983 model exists, and production was continued with the 1984 models. The lone 1983 model can be seen at the Corvette Museum. Years after the first Corvette rolled off the assembly line, they still are towards the top of the pack for speed and acceleration. They have also been continually produced longer than any sports car or passenger car in the world.
Drive Your Corvette to Work Day is being observed today! It has been observed the closest Friday to June 30th since 2001.

Dallergut Dream Department Store: 2.5/5
2.5/5 stars 243 pages contains: cozy vibes and dream magic!!
As some of you may know, I make the São Paulo – Boston trip quite frequently! I'm a college student in the US but live in Brazil, and so that makes for very long plane rides. We're talking 14 hours here. So, to keep sane, I usually download a couple books into my Kindle, pray they're interesting enough to keep me interested, buckle down, and read.
I've just made the trek once more to spend the summer holidays at home, and I decided to download some books I'm reading for r/Fantasy's Bingo Challenge. One of them was The Dallergut Dream Department Store, by Lee Mi-ye, which clears my "alliterative title" square! Of course, because I can't make anything easy on myself, I read this Korean book in its French translation. Because of this, I feel like it's fully possible I didn't grasp the story in all of its complexity. I'm kind of bad at French. And I might have also been high on sleeping pills for half the book. So, take this review with a grain of salt.
In general, I thought this was a 2.5 star read. For me, that means it's decent. Like getting a C in school — you passed, but your work is far from stellar. What I did enjoy was the concept: the story follows Penny as she begins to work at a magical store people visit in their sleep, and where they "buy" their dreams for the night. And for the most part, the book is a world-building exercise in the concept of the store. It researches how every situation would work, from nightmares to people who day-dream, to animal dreams. Personally, I love a good deep dive into a world, so I was having fun, especially during the first half.
But after a while, it gets repetitive. The chapters are mostly loose stories that don't circle back to a particular theme or event. Penny is almost always there, though, I guess, but I'll get to my problems with Penny later. Although the stories are well-written, very easy to read and can sometimes be quite compelling, they don't make a novel when they're put together. They make up a collection of episodes with the same vague amalgamation of characters. The gimmick gets old pretty fast, and I was quickly looking for some emotional stakes, an overarching plot, anything. And although I am a fan of a good plotless, vibes-only fantasy, the lack of connection I felt with our main character and the fact that she and her friends do not change at all throughout the stories made it a very stale reading experience.
And Penny? Oh, Penny. My question became, quite simply, why are we following her? She's not a particularly interesting character, with no defining traits, nothing she needs or wants (besides working at the store, which she achieves in chapter 1)... Meanwhile, other characters in the novel have more personality, more interesting backgrounds, and they barely get to shine. They're buried behind an overabundance of Penny doing not much of anything, and being a self-insert/audience for Mr. Dallagoot's sermons. I kept wondering if it wouldn't be more interesting to follow any one of them.
And I think Ms. Lee wondered this too, since she includes two epilogues which are, in my opinion, completely unnecessary, and are told entirely from the perspectives of two other characters. They just prove to the audience that Penny is a dreadful character by abandoning her at the end, leaving two random anecdotes about side-characters, which could've been anywhere in the book, to finish the novel off.
Although the vibes are good, the world is interesting and the book reads very cozy, there's a lot that you're left wanting, here. I think what this book needed was an editor, or a workshop session. It has so much potential, and if some crucial changes had been made, then I think Ms. Lee would have a wonderful final product on her hands.
