TW: Suicide Mention

I honestly feel like the WoF fandom kind of forgot or at least doesn’t talk about the fact that Clearsight considered technically committing s*!c!de by letting herself crushed by the avalanche that would occur on Agate mountain (and the fact that she thought that her life “was finished and there was nothing left to live for”) after she put her enchanted bracelet on Darkstalker.

Which is something that Clearsight luckily decided not to do, and with Clearsight eventually learning that she can live a happy and long life without Darkstalker being in it.

Although I’ll mention that when I did read that scene in Darkstalker, I honestly couldn’t help but feel surprised that this scene occurred within the series, since I literally never heard anyone talking about it.

(And the possibility that Clearsight could’ve committed if she didn’t see possible visions of herself being happy in the future from her future powers too.)

And look. It kinda sucks being the Mortal One on a three-person team. She's spent probably years at this point having to work harder to keep up with Dick and Bruce, having to learn Ancient Greek, getting full-on ignored by monsters who only have eyes for Bruce and Dick. So she hears that she's going to become the next Oracle, and she gets really excited, and she builds it all up in her head about her new fate.

Then they get to CHB, and tell Chiron about Dick's dream and how Babs seems to be the perfect fit, and Chiron is actually going to let them do it because it's not like he has any better plan, but right at the last moment Apollo appears like WOAH NO STOP STOP. And Apollo explains that this is all a misunderstanding, Babs isn't the destined Oracle, none of this should even be happening. And because Apollo is Like That, he's a bit of an asshole about the whole thing, and so Babs and Dick go back to Gotham pretty dejected, and Babs thinks she gets over it when years go by and no grand destiny falls into her lap to make her as special as everyone else.

Then she gets paralyzed by the Joker, and she loses Batgirl, and she becomes an entirely different kind of crimefighter. And, well, she thinks she's earned a bit of petty naming rights after spending years calling herself Batgirl. And thus Oracle is born.

babs is a mortal! she's clearsighted, which is how she meets Bruce and Dick. I haven't totally fleshed out the situation but I imagine it would be along the lines of "what is that creature?" "you can see the hellhound? it's not attacking you? batman help" followed by Dick learning about the concept of clearsighted mortals. She has to do a bit of proving herself capable of keeping up with them at the start, which she Does Not Appreciate, but once she's in she's in. Babs is not the actual literal oracle, but Apollo does have twenty consecutive heart attacks upon learning the Oracle of Delphi is back and in Gotham (she isn't)

Heehee, made a tierlist of my own!

Okay I know that this may sound rough, and I might change it up a little, but this grading scale is a little harsh, not gonna lie. I think it’s mostly because of my narrower view on characters (I tend to focus on the ones I like and latch onto them, and I disregard the others, which means that I don’t have as strong of a feeling about their ships.

Honestly, the A, A+, and S’s seem sorta strong for my current opinions, but if I would, I would have put some more ships up there, but then I decided that having just my OTP up there in A was a little lonely, so I moved it down to B+.

B+ is “I’m glad you exist”, either because I ship it, or because I’m glad it exists on an objective level because both characters are good for each other, and I am tickled by thoughts of them from time to time. I’m also really glad that Thorn x Stonemover was on the tierlist hehe :) My OTP gets a B+! Darkstalker and Clearsight get to be on there because it’s my ship-in-law. I would hail it while 300 yards away at sea, mostly because I like reading Darkstalker x Clearsight fanfiction. The others are just there because they’re cute, I suppose.

B for me is “You exist and I suppose that’s alright” and yes, it just tends to be ships that I find myself liking just a shade less than the B+ ones. I mean, I still understand where people are coming from, and I enjoy them from time to time, I suppose. If I felt like it, I would probably move more B+ ships down to B ships.

C is either the fact that they wouldn’t work out, or the fact that I don’t really enjoy it or ship it as much, or I just tend to ignore these characters. I know, I know, I should work a little on that. 

D is because I just plain dislike the ship.

F is because D isn’t bad enough for the ship. You can probably figure out why.

What did you think of the foreshadowing given by Whiteout? (“He won’t snow yet”, “i like the way she(clearsight) knits”, etc?

MMM I get to talk about Whiteout, my favorite character in the book and quite possibly the entire series!

I really love the way Whiteout was handled as a character, and her foreshadowing is super interesting!! Rereading it, it was pretty cool to decipher what her prophecies meant for later on in the story.

Checking the WoF wiki, I saw something I never knew before- Whiteout possesses the same powers as Darkstalker?? Now her foreshadowing makes a lot of sense! I didn’t know they were really prophecies! But this means she can also read minds.. Was this ever hinted at in the book? Ooooh, I’ll have to see next time I read. But.. That would mean that she hears all the ableist BS other dragons are thinking around her.. D:

Also, wasn’t it confirmed that Whiteout is neurodivergent in some way? I know Tui said she has synesthesia, and I also headcanon her as autistic! Maybe that’s just me self-projecting, but hey! No harm done there c: In the book, she’s shown having some social difficulties, a shutdown, a meltdown, and she may also have a special interest in painting, which is very cool since most autistic characters in media aren’t typically shown with a creative side. And her metaphorical/ symbolic way of speaking, and her odd sense of humor (there are no spots on Darkstalker’s soul.. Only stripes!) was really refreshing for me to see! I’d think that my mind is also pretty metaphor-based, and my sense of humor is also.. Very odd XD Tui- you can confirm Whiteout as autistic! It’s all good! Please?

If I may ask and if you don’t mind asking in this rabid if a community, but if you could change one thing, whether the arc, the events, ANYTHING in either of the five original wings of fire books, what would they be?

I genuinely really liked to original five wof books, it’s the second arc I have the most problem with. Of course, I totally respect Tui’s way of writing, her ideas and intentions for the series, because it is wholly personal and exceptionally difficult to write. I intend this not as a personal attack on her work, but merely a mild criticism and personal introspection of what I would do to change the series, if I were given the power.

Tsunami/Riptide - Why? Why this? 

Glory/Deathbringer - WHY???? WHY THIS???????

Blaze/Glacier - You know, I really liked this interpretation of the icewing/sandwing alliance. At first, of course Glacier just wants to expand her territory, but the more she’s with Blaze, the more she’s introduced to ideals outside of stuffy icewing society bollocks. She opens up more, becomes more accepting and slowly this has an effect on the first circle icewings around her. Getting rid of the toxic environment many of her peers grew up in would be beneficial for generations of icewings to come,,, but then darkstalker kills her. More on his grimy ass later

SECOND ARC:

Quinter/Moonbli/Winterwatcher - this is all well and good, but love triangles are a) not needed and b) totally detracting from the story. You want romance? Do what Seraphina did! Everyone is together at the end. Winter/Moon/Qibli is the best version of the events in the Darkness of Dragons. Doesn’t mean they have to be joined at the hip, either. Winter can still go to Sanctuary, maybe Qibli can help out with Queen Thorn, and Moon can go explore the new island. If she’s supposed to be a modern reflection of Clearsight, doesn’t that make sense? 

Darkstalker - just kill this fucker. Don’t mess around with enchanted strawberries. Perhaps use his own animus magic to do this, but honestly? Out of every dragon that has died in this series, Darkstalker is a genocidal, manipulative monster. Kill him. (I hate Darkstalker and I always thought his ending was too soft, even with his mother there. I half expected her to tow his ass after what he did to Arctic as soon as she turned her back)

Anemone/Tamarin - don’t beat around the bush with this. No queerbaiting, if you please. Dragons obviously don’t see queer relationships as out of the ordinary (suggested by how everyone in the series reacts to the mention of said relationships) so why even throw it in at the end? Have a show of it.

There are lots of smaller plotpoint complaints, but books aren’t perfect. No one can get it entirely spot on all the time. These are more those bigger issues that I feel detract from the story or irritate me, or things I feel were missed out on.
