Most Anticipated New Book Releases October 2024
Not a lot of titles that piqued my interest for October – probably for the best considering the previous two months had large offerings. Now I might be able to catch up in the lull: Don’t Let the Forest In – C. G. Drews (YA, Horror, Fantasy, LGBT+) Once upon a time, Andrew had cut out his heart and given it to this boy, and he was very sure Thomas had no idea that Andrew would do anything for…

★★☆☆☆.25
📱 Book 4 of 2025 ✧ horror ✧
This was probably my most dissapointing read of the year so far. I was really looking forward to this book; dark academia vibes with fairlytale monsters and obsession that toes the line between platonic and romantic? I'm was so in! And while I enjoyed parts of it, I'm mostly left wanting something completely different :/
I didn't really like any of the characters. I didn't hate them don't get me wrong, but I found them all ot feel a bit uncanny valley and didn't feel like real teenagers to me. I don't usually have trouble connecting to characters, even when they're written to be unlikeable (which I'm not sure was the case here but oh well) but Andrew felt like a brick wall most of the time.
I liked the queer representation it did feel stilted at times but I can chalk that up to teenagers being awkward more than anything else.
I did like this book aesthetically. There are illustrations and passages of short stories throughout the book and they really helped to 'set the mood', I think they were really effective and I wanted more of them.
I do think that a lot of my issues with this book would have stung less if I'd listened to it as an audiobook. I doubt I'll reread it but if I did that would be my chosen format. I can't say I recommend this book, but despite what I view as flaws I do still understand why other people would like this. So yeah, I originally rated this a 3.25 but after ruminating on it I lowered it to a 2.75, because there are some good things in this book even though I didn't like it!
EDIT FROM LIKE 3 WEEKS LATER: I've lowered my rating once again to 2.25, I think I was a bit too lenient on this book before. I didn't have a good time and that's okay! I need to stop people pleasing my opinions...
Spoilery thoughts are under the cut!
I hated the ending. I really really did. I struggled through how ever many pages to be left completely disappointed. DLTFI was so hard to get through. I try not to DNF things because I like to give things a chance, but this I was so close to giving up so early on. If I hadn't been so excited for this book originally I would have given up - and I wish I had!
If the book wasn't so frustrating to read I would have guessed the 'twist' sooner, but I just hated everything so much I wasn't willing to put in the work to figure it out. I like theorising the answer to the mystery but the fact that it was painfully obvious it was Andrew's writing causing the monsters the whole time and it was still made a big deal at the end was kind of insulting.
I found Andrew and Dove's relationship so strange (I didn't work out that she was dead, I thought she was just depressed or something), but I really don't like the idea that everything that I just read has to be recontextualised because of the reveal at the end. It comes across as trying to be profound when really it just feels like a waste of time. I stuck with this book hoping it would save itself in the ending, and it didn't - makes my dislike of this book even worse.

July 2024 TBR
Hello friends!! Welcome to the July 2024 TBR. A post where I will attempt to intuit what I feel like reading for the month of July. If you cast your mind back to my June TBR post, I drafted it with the assistance of ChatGPT. And… I absolutely failed. I read a grand total of one book out of the ten that AI picked for. Although, to be fair, it was the ONLY 5-star read for June that I had. Which…

An extraordinary amount of intimacy lay in exchanging art. Not for critique and not for class. Just to look. To feel. To understand each other.

Any person named Andrew is automatically gay to me. It's not like i've read many books with gay Andrews ( i've only read 2 books with gay andrews so far), it's just that the Andrews in the books were so painfully gay that everytime I hear someone's name is Andrews I just think they are gay. Is that weird? Is there anyone else who thinks the same?
Ps: The gay Andrews im talking about are from All for the game series and Don't let the forest in.
