my little pony fun fact!

did you know that in 1988 Hasbro bought out cabbage patch kids as the previous owner filed for bankruptcy? they only had the IP for a short period as Mattel took over in 1994 but in their reign they created... PONIES!!!!

The initial line was Crimp'n Curl Ponies which featured 6 ponies in typical pony colours. Then there was an extension of the line called Magic Meadow Ponies which featured 6 colored earth ponies with the second wave featuring 3 unicorns and 3 pegasi ponies. The Magic Meadow Ponies even featured a pony called Sundance! I wonder why that sounds familiar...

Personally I would love to add these to my collection!!! Is this a fact you already knew?

Today my kid had field day at school. He mentioned that they might get to win prizes, and it made me think about that fave boomer and boomer-adjacent debate over participation awards

I’m forty now, and I remember getting a couple of those when I was a kid. The people who are whining about kids getting “participation trophies” now were almost always the same generation that decided to give them out in the first place. I always thought that the wank was a really funny way to say “Man, we were shitty authority figures, huh?” But the really funny thing is that I don’t remember a single kid who actually cared about them. No one was jonesing for those participation ribbons. We either wanted to do whatever activity was on deck because it was FUN or we were doing it against our will because it was BORING (or TOO DAMN HOT) and the junk they gave us afterwards was irrelevant.

Except, I liked them. I did. Because I was a die-hard Horse Girl. I had about 20 plastic ponies of various shapes and sizes (with various amounts of glitter) and those participation awards were fantastic for playing Horse Show because they looked so much cooler than the crap ones I always cut out of construction paper (and Mom wouldn’t let me use my ACTUAL blue ribbons from winning 1st place in the library’s Illustrate A Book contest like three years in a row because they were too fancy to tape to a Cabbage Patch Pony’s head.)

So, Boomers and Co, thanks for the participation awards! They were fun.

This pony has a hugely inflated ego now, though.

I considered going back to bed because it’s dark and cloudy and rainy but after laying there for a moment was like “I’m too awake for this!”

Which isn’t a bad thing at all.

So I came downstairs and shuffled the ponies that were ready to go down to the basement.

Still haven’t opened the box of ponies that came in yesterday. I’m feeling more energetic but not like............

good.

Better! Which will probably turn into worse here in a bit. That’s what happened last time, anyway. I kept getting better then worse then better! then wooooooorse.

I did look up the Cabbage Patch ponies yesterday and now I know that they do indeed have names, but there’s only a very small handful of names/characters and they reused them for each different type of pony. I did not ID the crimp n curl pony I have in the basement, but she needs to go, too.
