Monday Motivation from Ebon Light

At one point in the visual novel, Gha'alia's precious cinnamon roll Vadeyn Milirose says: "You'll look around one day and realize you made it through what you thought was impossible."

Having experienced this IRL a good number of times, I couldn't help but feel heartened. Reminded. Seen.

It can be so hard to remember this when you're in the thick of your troubles, wading through the woes of each day, surviving from moment to moment. It's all too easy to believe there's no way out when you feel trapped by the tides.

One of the functions of fiction is to show us there can be ways forward and happier days. We can come out the other side. And it can be worth a backward glance if only to admire the view of all the miles we've traveled to get to where we are now.

We needn't fully understand how we made it through the storm before or how we will again, but we'll have smoother sailing if we believe salvation is on the horizon. And we needn't believe blindly - the past bears all the proof we need.

I don't know how many of you need to see this message, but I know I did.

Серон, наш штурман, говорит, что нам нельзя здесь находиться, это воды Ллалари. Сам он не совсем человек, но плавал с ними, и явно наслаждается, когда рассказывает раскрывшим рот от страха матросам, что они делают с эльфами. Я думаю, он выдумал по меньшей мере половину. - Как думаешь, что твой призрак чувствует, когда мы тут занимаемся всяким, - Калипоа хитро смотрит на меня, когда я нависаю над ней близко, тянусь рукой к ее животу. - Злится. Он всегда злится. Ее это, кажется, веселит, она целует меня с ухмылкой, хватает мою ладонь и толкает ее вниз под одеяло. У нас редко бывают праздные дни, и мы держимся за каждую возможность быть вдвоем, заниматься любовью, не торопиться, не думать о приказах, не держать под контролем жизнь, корабль, команду, море. Она ритмично мнет ладонью мое плечо, поджимает губы, умилительно вскидывает ножку, такая стихийная и естественная. Ее надсадное дыхание заполняет тишину каюты и как будто клубится темнотой в углах. Глухой и частый стук чьих-то сапог приближается к нашей двери, и Калипоа отмахивается от него рукой, как от мухи. - Капитан! - звучит из-за двери. Я не сдерживаю улыбку, Калипоа прячет голову под одеялом и вьется, изгибается как рыбка на берегу. - Докладывай! - мой голос твердый и злой, совсем не как мои руки, которые гладят, мнут, щипают. - Северный ветер поднимается! Прикажете ставить парус? Калипоа хлопает рукой по матрасу, и так отчаянно пытается не издать ни звука, что я едва сдерживаюсь от смеха. - Капитан приказывает ставить! И прикажите Серону скорректировать курс на выход из вод Ллалари. Матрос за дверью отдает честь и дробный перестук его сапог удаляется. Калипоа срывает с себя одеяло, раскрасневшаяся, шутливо злая, кидает его в меня, смеётся, сворачиваясь в калачик. Мы снова правим кораблем. Или корабль только делает вид, что правится нами?

I know for a fact that behind Vadeyns back, Calipoa fights everyone who dares to talk shit about him or ridicule him because she knows and values that softness and empathy is his form of strength and that is absolutely wholesome to me (ﾉ´ヮ`)ﾉ*: ･ﾟ

Laceaga, cuddling further into MC’s hair: it was me. I made sure it was short and sweet.

MC: *scoffs* short and sweet?

MC: you kinda yelled “LISTEN HERE, I HAVE FEELINGS FOR YOU AND I KNOW YOU HAVE FEELINGS FOR ME, SO IT’S ABOUT TIME WE ACKNOWLEDGE IT!” in front of me.

Calipoa: Laceaga…?

Laceaga: yeah, I know.

can you tell us more about your EL baker oc and how her and cali came to be together? 🎤

sorry this took a little longer, i wanted to sketch her out! also cut for length! Baker with no name and strong hands:

She's kept/non-military, a mishmash of elf kind (not terribly uncommon when you're trying not to inbreed on such a small island,) vastly prefers dealing with scouts over soldiers with one notable exemption, slightly obsessed with starts/celestial bodies, has a small apartment by the docks, and desperately wants off the island.

She got a lucky location for her shop: near one of the wall's gates, on the main thoroughfare. The shop's specialty is stuffed buns- perfect for being on the go, but her personal favorite to make is butter bread.

Due to her shop's location she gets a lot of foot traffic from soldiers/scouts. She ends up knowing both Lacey and Vadeyn as well as Calipoa. Lacey the longest, then Cali and Vadyen.

In regards to the game plot: she winds up on the Bastion near the end of the game- convinced Cali to let her aboard. Her original plan was to run away when they made landfall. That obv never happens. (in a divergent path, it does, miss baker doesn't make it far before realizing whenever she thought about being away from the island, she wasn't alone, so she comes back before the Bastion even leaves. this still causes tension between the two of them but eventually it resolves.)

I also like the idea that Skylar/one of the servants of Duliae's estate buys from her b/c duliae really likes her bread but has no fucking idea where it comes from.

I don't have a concrete answer on how they met but they hit it off immediately and it probably involved... bread. I don't think Cali would be particularly shy about it when she likes someone so after being a sort of regular at the shop for awhile she would say shit like "of course the bread's delicious, when made by such a beautiful woman" and eventually ask her out. Pretty mundane tbh

By the time the game rolls around, they've been together for a couple years but keep it on DL b/c of Likan's rebellion. A few people do know, Lacega is one of them, and later the whole Bastion: after they get attacked by that fish, in a moment of relief that they're both okay, Cali grabs and kisses her right on the deck SO

+ Her dynamic with Lacega is often:

Lacey: wtf is gluten? take that shit out. Baker: it's gluten free Lacey: i don't care if it's free Baker: swear on your fucking YEEZYS if you wanna fight we gonna fight

The Men of Ebon Light

There are plenty of characters in Ebon Light. These five - Ernol, Laceaga, Duliae, Haron, and Vadeyn - appear regularly, each with their own views and attitudes. They're all potential love interests, too, which makes me feel spoiled for choice!

I don't know if you can romance more than one at a time because I haven't tried. I'm on my third playthrough, using each new romance to experience more of the story and so far, it's been quite satisfying. Choosing a favored character reveals more about them and may open up new scenes.

The creator has said that there's no suggested order for romances, except to leave Duliae for last. I intend to do just that, which makes me determined to get through to that fifth playthrough. And instead of being antsy to get it over with, I'm looking forward to it!

In all seriousness, this is one of the few VNs I've played so far that has made me want to seek out fanfic to read because I want more of the characters. And to soothe my broken heart after finding out I can't romance Commander Calipoa, but that's a whole other post.

Seems like I don’t get the time... well time is the wrong word... energy to work on proper illustrations much anymore. I spend most of my creative juice on game art and stuff. Not complaining, not at all. It’s a little sad, but I’m happy working on what I’m working on! That said, this is one of the things I poke on still from time to time. It’s years old at this point, redone so many times, I have a few pictures like that.

Somewhat recently I finally learned to call it on pictures and step away from them. It’s helped. A lot. That said, the old pictures still in the cycle are a bit trickier... but I’m gonna try to tackle this one! So the point of this post: ‘Snowshots’ version: today! Will it finally get it done? Will. it. finally. get. done!?!??!?
