album review: live wire, tom rasmussen

i had been aware of mx rasmussen long before i actually bothered to listen to any of their music. like a lot of queer people i know fuck all about, i followed them on instagram in the hopes that i might myself live a vibrant and artistic queer life. so far unfulfilled. what prompted me to listen to live wire was seeing travis alabanza, another instagram follow, wear a shirt in a post that boldly commanded me to LISTEN TO TOM RASMUSSEN. aye captain.

i don't know if i was simply too in the weeds of listening to very sad indie music, or had spent too long listening to my fuckass boyfriend of the time put down the queer community and the things they liked, but i was desperately in need of a bop. live wire delivers this. the opening track is decieving, and i was unsure, psalm I: yours is a sparse and beautiful demonstration of tom's very angelic voice. it is a devotional to love and loving, and very lovely, yes, but not what i would call a bop.

thankfully track 2, faithless, brings in the beat. with a groove seemingly designed in a lab to get sad fat cunts grooving in their kitchen, it brings you into a world of queer joy. here was what i needed. an aspirational falsetto and a dance beat offer a great deal towards bringing a person out of a deep funk.

there are certainly ebbs and flows on this album. the psalm interludes create space for mindfullness, and encourage a deeper listen than just pretending the living room is a club. oysters for lunch, while not a song i will ever likely love, is nevertheless a song i will defend. there are so very many songs in this world about eating puss, it's about time there was one or two about eating ass. if you truly believe in the liberation of queer sexuality, you got to learn to bust a move to a track about slurping oysters and hole in equal measure.

body, heart, mind was is a lush celebration of rejecting materialist 'wellness' and trying to reconnect with your entire authentic self. never look back is also lush. let's just assume that the whole album is suffused with lush production and sumptuous vocals. never look back is a beautiful ballad about leaving the past in the past and moving on with your special people. it didn't play any particular part in why i broke up with my fuckass boyfriend of the time, but i did listen to it on repeat in the time afterward.

it would be very easy to talk about each individual song on this album, and the temptation remains, but i believe in levity and doubt the legitimacy of my own opinions on most occasions. if i were to get into the weeds of every single thing i liked i would be here forever.

i consider everything after psalm iii: when stars collide to be a perfect stretch of songs. there's a lot to be happy about is my particular album highlight. the influence of bronski beat, hitherto unmentioned yet always present, is at its most obvious here and that influence is used to perfection here. shugs (live wire) named after i belive to be tom's life partner, is an electrifying and affirming ode to meeting a person that will change your life forever.

nature of the clock and i see potential as a beautiful thing work for me as a two piece, that ties in with ideas sown in never look back. time is marching ever onward and not only must we march along, we must must treat the ever approaching creep of the future as a well of potential.

one of the most stunningly put together pop albums i have listened to in some time, bringing together experience and influence into something very unique and special. on my first listen, i was brought to joyous tears, and also painful tears, because i had been neglecting myself for a very long time.

recommended if: you need a bop, you want to listen to more trans/nonbinary musicians, you have a fuckass boyfriend (or girlfriend, or partner) you've been meaning to break up with, or you like listening to good music.

An Ode to Gender Noncomformity

I wrote a poem sort of thing about my feelings around gender. It is very long and very open so um, soz 

I don’t know how early I felt uncomfortable about being a girl.

 From my earliest memory, my closest friends were boys. I played with lego, with nerf, with my brother and his friends. But I also played with barbies, with dress ups, with other girls. I wasn’t one of the boys, I liked ‘girly’ things.

But I’m thankful to my parents for raising my brother and I gender neutral. We both learnt to cook, to clean. We weren’t steered away from toys for the other gender. That stuff’s probably a big part of who I am today.

When I was 9 years old I got my hair cut short. 

There’s photo evidence too, of a little boy holding his newborn baby brother, wearing simpsons pyjamas. 

Except that boy is me. It’s because I read a book in which there was a girl called Georgina who cut her hair short and asked everyone to call her George. This spoke to me so strongly that I knew I had to do the same. 

My mum humoured me. I wore hand me downs from my male cousins. Someone yelled ‘boy-girl’ at me across the playground in the same way people yell slurs. I didn’t know then. I was just annoyed that I stood out like that. 

If I had had those experiences in today’s climate, would I be considered transgender? Would my mum have allowed me to cut my hair? 

Eventually I decided I liked my long hair, annoying as it can be. Many years later I wore dresses by choice, and rejoiced in them. Pants had always given me a sense of power, of security, of comfort. But dresses could do the same, I realised, and be freeing in other ways.

A ‘friend’ once told me he would list all of my worst qualities. He didn’t get past the first one – that I assert my masculinity too much. I was so baffled by this and I questioned him to his meaning. But I understood it. I just couldn’t comprehend why me sitting like a boy, being loud, hanging out with boys, being outspoken, authoritative, blunt (masculine traits?). How could those be flaws of mine? I ponder this sometimes still.

Do I hate my body?

 Is it just my asexuality

That makes me detest the existence of genitalia, 

of sex, 

makes me uncomfortable? 

It’s a factor for sure. I just wish this wasn’t an issue, that gender didn’t exist. That we could just be people and things weren’t so weird. I like the idea that before they left the garden adam and eve weren’t male and female, not really. There would be no need for that anyway. And the bible all but tells us that gender won’t be a thing in heaven – ‘There is neither Jew or Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus’ 

I do not hate my body. I do not hate my hips. 

I do not hate my long hair. Or my breasts. Or my lips. 

But I hate the obsession with gender. I hate the discomfort I have with myself. 

I don’t like feeling less of a girl because I don’t wear makeup, 

Or because I’m a bit of a slob, and I do nothing with my hair 

Or because I don’t get along with girls on more than a surface level most of the time, no matter how hard I try. 

I want to be a girl but I am not, while also being one fully. 

One of my teachers at bible college taught us girls about what being a biblical woman means. I remember my friend’s frozen face, holding in tears, after we were told that women being inferior was a part of God’s very good design for the world, and that that is how God always intended things to be. After this discussion my friend hung back and spent our break poring over the bible and writing examples of God’s love for women on the whiteboard until it was full. I watched, my heart hurting. 

Being a girl is not fun. It’s painful, it’s vulnerable, it’s infuriating. As a Christian it’s even worse, whilst society progresses. I’m lucky I don’t feel called to preaching because I’d never be allowed 

‘Feminine’ traits of mine that would probably be praised as such – compassion, a call to serve, to humility, to being a helper, submitting myself - make me furious because the bible tells us God wants all people to be like that. I am not ‘being a girl’ by having those traits; I am just being human. Is it the world’s misogyny that makes me not feel like a girl? 

Captain Marvel sparks my enthusiasm, but also my gender dysphoria 

I am in awe of Brie Larson, her strength, her confidence, her compassion She speaks so well, but every video I watch is met with comments about her arrogance, 

her bitchiness, 

her wrongness.

And I am angry. 

Because she doesn’t seem like that at all. 

To me. 

And the (male) actors speak just like her 

Are just as cocky 

But they aren’t punished for it 

What’s the difference? 

Just that she is 

A girl 

I feel like her. Like I am being told by the world to know my place. 

But I can’t 

I can’t shut up. 

I can’t back down. 

I don’t have to prove myself. 

I guess I have to make myself comfortable with discomfort. 

I am out of place, in the cracks of society, of what we are told is true, in so many ways. 

I’ve known I’m asexual for years, not straight for sure, but not LGBT enough, gay enough, different enough. I can’t relate fully to either section, or even within the asexual community. 

And I have a lot of mild conditions – anxiety, depression, adhd, autism. I’m not normal, neurotypical, but I don’t struggle the way other neurodivergents struggle

Maybe labels don’t help that way. Maybe being an individual is enough. 

But it also isn’t 

I need to figure out who I am

 I’m a Christian, but God I don’t want to be a Christian. 

I look at Christians and I see hatred and tradition and ungodliness and I am angry 

I look at non-Christians and I see shallowness and selfishness and ungodliness and I am confused 

My God is my own, and yet everyone else’s 

But also nobody’s 

Gender’s like that too I guess 

I’m tempted to say that gender’s not a real thing 

That your body is just your body and your personality is unique, unconnected 

But we are made of our experiences and our gender informs that 

I can’t leave being a girl behind, even on the days when I want to be nonbinary. 

I hang out with my groups of male friends, more comfortable, feeling more like them than in a group of girls. But I am not one of the boys. I am distinct. Myself. They can’t understand what being a girl is like. And I can’t reach into the experience of being a boy. Even though I have a mix of understanding, of gendered things. I had a boyfriend once but mostly I admire girls, girls, girls everywhere. How does anyone ever figure themselves out?

 Maybe, maybe not, nevertheless, as ungirllike as I am 

I was born a girl, have seen the struggles of girls and struggled with them 

So nonbinary as I may feel,

Dumping some thoughts on Picard S1 and Discovery S3 because I finally got around to watching them...

Picard S1

I’m sad that I didn’t love it. There were a lot of really satisfying nostalgia moments, specifically all the Riker/Troi scenes, but it wasn’t enough to make it great. I just felt like something was really off with the whole show... the tone was bizarre, the editing was sloppy, and the dialogue/acting was spotty at best.

Like, for example, there were some really amusing scenes where Raffi was trying to interrogate all the different Rios’ (and btw Santiago Cabrera was definitely a standout, he was GREAT) but they were intercut with all these other heavily dramatic scenes and it felt so weird?? The cuts were not sharp enough to make those tone switches and it did not work.

I loved seeing the Qowat Milat, they were badass, and Elnor was definitely a fave. Any Romulan stuff is super interesting to me and Harry Treadaway as Narek was a great addition. Of course, Seven of Nine is ALWAYS amazing and I adore her, and the episodes of TNG with the Borg were always the best so the fact that this show revolved around them and artificial life was pretty cool. I thought I’d hate the whole “Soji is Data’s daughter” storyline but Isa Briones really pulled it off and made it work.

Overall, it was... decent. I’ll watch S2 because there were aspects I did enjoy but I hope they find their footing a little better for the next season. 

Discovery S3

Uhhh broken record here, but I’m sad I didn’t love it lol. Honestly the whole time I was like “I miss Pike, I miss Spock, I miss Number One, I miss Tyler, I miss L’Rell” etc. etc. etc. Jumping ahead in time was such a huge risk and I’m not sure I’ve really bought into it. Plus, then one of my faves (Georgiou) got sent back so we will never see her again and I was like UGH. I do like the Disco crew and I’m glad some of the other bridge crew got a bit more time to shine here (Owo remains awesome) but I don’t really feel such a huge attachment to them.

So one of my biggest complaints is that they really kind of screwed themselves over with Michael Burnham. They made a mistake I’ve seen shows make before where they give their main character what is actually really excellent character growth and change, but that means they no longer really make sense in the world of the show. Burnham, in reality, should have moved on from Starfleet and Discovery. She sure as HELL should not have been made captain in the last episode!! What kind of lunacy... But yeah, logically, she should have moved on, but you can’t get rid of your main character so they forced her back on to Discovery and it just feels so wrong.

One of the best things they did though was introduce Book (and Grudge!! BEST CAT BEST FRIEND SO LARGE). He’s a fantastic character, so likeable and fun, and I love him with Michael. He softens her but he doesn’t change her and I wish they could have just gone off and had super fun times on their own but alas. I guess it’s good we get to keep Book around but y’know... On the other hand, Adira and Gray? Fuckin’ yikes. I am really happy for some trans/queer rep but did they have to be annoying teens? Gray’s voice is like nails on a chalkboard and Adira is so awkward and moves like a weird bird and it’s unsettling. Not a fan.

As always, absolutely LOVED the Mirror!Verse episodes. Any time they go to that universe it’s so much fun and Michelle Yeoh killed it in all her scenes. Again, I was like “I MISS LORCA” because they kept fucking saying his name but he didn’t even get a cameo??? Rude. Oh and I also loved seeing Oded Fehr pop up as the Admiral! Great casting.

After how much I loved S1 and S2 it was kind of a let down even though I knew I would be missing some of my faves from those seasons. Even the overarching plot was weaker and the resolution of the Burn storyline was really boring tbh. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is starting to film soon and I am ten times more excited to see what that show brings, but I would at least try S4 of Disco to see where they are headed.
