ESCZ 2024
Did everybody watch? What did you think? Was it an interesting hour of your life or an hour you aren't getting back. Here is what I thought?
I'm not sure how I feel about the host, Adam Mišík. He seems like a nice man and in recorded clips on Instagram, he appeared poised, likable and articulate. Maybe more comfortable in Czech than English, but that would be expected. But a recorded clip also has the advantage of multiple takes to get it right. He seemed like he was tipsy during the broadcast. Anyway....
Cesár Sampson was quite professional in comparison, but he had an easier job technically. His prerecorded clips with the artists were concise, complimentary of the performers and friendly. I liked the little segments.
Aiko screamed a song for three minutes and gyrated around with two dancers. Maybe if she moved less she wouldn't have sounded the way she did. That said I read the words and I could see how this could be a decent song. I'm just not voting for it.
Elly had a quiet ballad of a song and for all the quietness and sweetness - it was sung incredibly well. She also had dancers and while they danced, she sung and it worked well.
Gianna was dressed in white with some sort of vinyl brassiere top and it was used in a way to distract from her vocal performance. It didn't really work. The performance was off and weird.
Lenny had a very professional performance. She was behind a piano for the song and it was probably the best performed of the evening. Vocals good, song good. All good - most likely will not be selected though.
MYDY has an interesting choreography to their performance which could do well. The synchronised movements of the band gave the entry a decent production. I liked the song too.
** At this point I realised that they bunched the girl entrants together, then the band and last two were the lads. I don't know why it was organised this way.
Tom Sean had the most interesting title of the evening and an interesting concept. The stage looked cluttered with all the people on stage and the dance was strange for me. I didn't mind the song.
Tomas Robin was last, and in all honesty I can't remember it at all. I went back and listened to a bit to remember it. This could be a decent entry to choose. Vocals need work and a decent stage, but the guy has charisma.
So that's that. The result comes out in a week. If you're reading this, you have the opportunity to vote via the eurovision.tv app but there is only 4 days left and you get one vote and no option to change your mind. So vote wisely.
My only question for the evening was: Where were Vesna?

AUSTRIA
One of the classic Eurovision countries, but since the semi-finals were introduced they had got some bad luck qualifying for the final. They also stopped participating from 2007 to 2011 but after that their results have improved and even won in 2014.
-Rise like a Phoenix, Conchita Wurst (2014)
The Queen. She entered on the stage, lights went on and the magic started. Conchita shined and rose like the phoenix, being one of the most elegant and breathless winner of all time with a song worth to be on a 007 movie initial credits.
youtube
-Shine, Natália Kelly (2013)
A good entry performed incredibly well by Natália. The staging and the production were good but it didn’t qualify for the final.
youtube
-I am yours, The Makemakers (2015)
A nice song and a good live performance. And the piano is on fire. Sadly it had some bad luck and ended in the last position of the final, and I think it didn’t deserved that at all.
youtube
-Nobody like you, Cesár Sampson (2018)
This beautiful song was very underrated before the festival began and then Cesár started singing and everybody was WOW. Deserved Top 3 and one of my faves from the last years.
youtube
-Alive, Vincet Bueno (2020)
Imo one of the best Austrian entries from its history. At least Vincet is confirmed for 2021.
youtube
Other interesting entries: 2016 Loin d’ici by Zoë (I don’t like the song but she fills the stage being so cheerful and happy), 2017 Running on Air by Nathan Trent.

23. AUSTRIA
Cesár Sampson - “Nobody but you” 3rd place
youtube
I’ve been postponing this write-up longer than I should have, but rare is the entry that gives me such massive cognitive dissonance. My feelings on Cesár have slung me wide between mild Dislike and even milder Appreciation, before finally landing in this purgatory of “Neither and kinda both”. But more on that later.
So, as I laid me down to write this incoming diatribe, I rewatched “Nobody But You” for the first time in over two months. While there’s no denying it’s a good gospel song, I am immediately reminded why I don’t like it: The act is rubbish
In fact, Cesár act shows the same, um “growing pains” that Sennek’s act did: He had a good song, but no real vision on how to bring it. “How about we throw in some base references to celestial beings???” *sigh* It’s the same arty-farty bullshit riddled with hidden empty messages and pained artistic decisions that so often sprout forth from those uncreative of mind. Cesár’s styling gives him the semblance of Doctor Facilier in a sleazy aerobics instructor costume.
(not quite sure why they didn’t simply hand him a mic, it’s not like he NEEDS both of his hands for anything relevant)
Even worse, for a good portion of the song he’s all but trapped on top of a desolate pentagonal platform, which greatly hampers his ability to move (did I say “aerobics instructor”? Retcon that to “personal trainer”). Given that “Nobody but you” is an uptempo, upbeat gospel song, this isn’t exactly the greatest of ideas.
To his credit, Cesár doesn’t evanesce into nothingness midway through the performance like Sennek did, but actually improves as the song goes on. Once the middle-eight begins and Cesár jumps off that stupid platform and starts to enjoy his performance, only then does this entry get the heart and soul it desperately needs. During those final 50 seconds the song finally lives up to its true potential and that potential is sky high.
However, is this what I *want* from my Eurovision Experience? Eurovision has always been and will forever remain an overcompetitive mess during which countries varying in degrees of homophobia try to outcamp one another for a whole week, whether it is by dryhumping pianos, dressing up like Mongol warlords, locking hot dancers into giant hamster wheels or undoing their sads. The Eurovision Week has always been an exposition of the Best of Worst Taste and while there always has been a place for genuinely competent songs, there’s a reason they rarely win. They simply don’t belong.
So, hear the cognitive dissonance I am experiencing with Cesár: I don’t like the song, not in spite of its competency, but because of it. “Nobody but you” is a good song and nothing more. Yet, it’s the "more” that *makes* a good Eurovision Entry in my eyes and separates it from the blahfests that you hear on the radio all the time.
However, that “Nobody but you” represents standards which I don’t hold too dear has been made clear by this year’s jury vote, ridiculous even by contemporary standards. (The comparison to Dr. Facilier is not only physical, for Cesár, too, had friends on the other side. *cough*). The juries did precisely two things right: One, sabotage Rybak in the finale (and thank goodness they did) and two, dogpile votes onto Eugent, rewarding precisely ONE of this year’s many brave entries. Everything else, ::yikes:: You can’t watch that finale and tell me in all honesty that:
1) Austria had the best song (I’d say this was France) 2) Austria had the best vocalists (Eugent hand’s down) 3) Austria had the best staging concept (Defintely Estonia) 4) Austria had the strongest message (Germany or again, France) 5) Austria had the best on-stage execution (Cyprus was this year’s showstopper)
Yet, for some reason not only did Austria win the jury vote over these countries, they also got a massive amount of twelves (not individual twelves!!), just because they were “sorta good” at everything. Preshow I wondered whether the new point calculation algoritm would would work and now I’m very confident that it does not. It actively rewards safety and punishes risk. This will be the end of the jury, if they’re not careful. No country should be handed a place in the top three simply because its entry is the lowest common denominator. Yet, it happened with Cesár Sampson and this will forever sour my opinion on him. Sorry, bae.
RANKING SO FAR:

24. Latvia (Laura Rizzotto - “Funny girl”)
