So another new experience in Aotearoa. I went to a small Shabbat service for the first time (for anyone who hasn't read my previous posts, I'm not Jewish, but I decided to learn a bit more about Jewish culture).

I told the others there that I wasn't Jewish & was just trying to learn. They were really welcoming & really nice & let me try their gefilte fish & challah bread. Turns out that both gefilte fish & challah bread tastes really, really nice. To be polite I also drank the wine, first alcoholic drink I have ever touched in 30 years of life. Turns out that I don't like the taste the wine.

So thankful to them for letting me, an outsider take part. It was an educational & actually enjoyable experience.

it was so fun, but did take me like 2 days lmao

i dont think i braided it right, it was a fishtail instead of a 5 strand braid, but overall it was very fun. i listened to 1989 tv the whole time, which was very vibes. it tastes very good, but might be a bit undercooked which sucks. i put too much egg was, so it looked done waaay before it was lmao. next time im gonna put it on a lower shelf, but the whole process was fun and brought me a lot of joy!!

Hanukkah Star Challah Recipe When invited to a Hanukkah dinner, I thought of making something appropriate. Finally we decided on a Challah bread shaped as a 6-pointed Star of David. 3 2/3 cups bread flour, 3 tablespoons white sugar, 1 teaspoon active dry yeast, 1 egg yolk, 1 tablespoon water, 1 cup water, 1.25 teaspoons salt, 1 tablespoon sesame seeds or more if desired, 2 eggs

A four-strand braid is used to braid a sweet eggy challah, which is then glazed and baked until it turns a stunning light golden brown. Honey and olive oil are used to give the bread a rich flavor.

I considered cooking a Hanukkah-themed meal when I was invited. Finally, we settled on Challah bread with a Star of David shape with six points.

Hey can I recommend that instead of making challah, you make a brioche? They're basically the same thing, but challah has a significant religious and spiritual meaning to the Jewish faith. Both challah and brioche are sweet eggy breads but brioche doesn't have a religious meaning. Sorry if this is rude, it's just important to me.
