Real Talk: Ace Didn't Need to Ask For Help, It's On Garp

i always hate when i see comments about how ace was an idiot or ace should have just asked garp for help because, no? like dawg wtf do you mean?

the one thing we have been told repeatedly across the manga and anime is that ace could have lived his entire life being perfect and he still would have ended up on that podium

he could have become a marine, a police officer, a teacher, a chef and all of that would have been reduced to nothing the moment his parentage was discovered

yes, ace became a pirate of his own volition, but sengoku never mentioned his piracy

he never mentioned all the criminal activity ace did as the captain of the spade pirates or even later as the second division leader of the whitebeard pirates

you know what sengoku did bring up though the moment he got on that damn podium? ace's parentage

he mentions nothing that gained ace his bounty to begin with when he gets that den den mushi in his hand. why?

because it doesn't matter that ace is a pirate. what matters is that they are eradicating the last gol d roger's bloodline

bear in mind that they were killing pregnant women and young children who could have even had the slightest possibility of being roger's lover or kin

akainu deadass says that he doesn't care if every other pirate at marineford escapes as long as ace and luffy died and he would ensure their deaths personally. and for what? not their piracy. none of their crimes. not even for ensuring that the truth that certain countries and lands that were actually saved by pirates instead of the marines never got out

but because their fathers were gol d roger and monkey d dragon respectively

solely because of that, he deemed neither of them deserved to live

and as far as garp goes - i love garp as much as the next person but garp has never done anything for ace to trust him enough to ask for help even if he felt he deserved to ask

garp's negligent parenting coupled with the abusive words ace grew up hearing led ace to believe he didn't even deserve to be born. when he even asks garp if his being born was a good thing, garp can't even tell him 'yes'. he just says 'time will tell'. my brother in the blue seas, that is an elementary schooler questioning his right to exist

ace is defeated by blackbeard in episode 325 (chapters 434-441), luffy hears about his execution being set in episode 416 (chapter 522) and then finally ace is killed in episode 483 (chapter 574). that is 158 episodes and 140 chapters total and in that time what ace receives from garp are conversations that boil down to

"you did this to yourself"

"i just wanted you to become a fine marine"

"i don't have sympathy for criminals but i do have sympathy for family"

and garp actively preventing those who wish to save ace from reaching him. yes after akainu strikes ace, garp does react viscerally with instinct to protect his grandson, but that's too little too damn late at that point

garp having his moral dilemmas mean nothing when, however long ace spent in impel down, he isn't trying to help him

garp having his 'wishing things had been different' thoughts mean nothing when garp is preventing people from saving his grandson

there's a reason garp lets dadan beat and berate him when they reunite in windmill village and it's because he knows she's right

over the course of 20 years, garp has consistently chosen work over ace and luffy. as much as i love dadan and co, bandits are not a good choice to have raise your grandkids and then be the surprised pikachu meme when neither of them wish to become marines

garp's inability to see past the system he disdains yet clings onto actively shoots him in the foot

prevents him from seeing that ace is right when he says he never could have become a marine

luffy could have never become a marine. i do hear arguments saying that luffy might have had a fair chance considering garp is biologically his grandfather but i say that's truly up in the air considering how, even with that knowledge, akainu still wants to put luffy on a poster

but that's all to say, asking why ace never asked garp for help is ridiculous

the fuck would ace look like asking the man who has done nothing but

unintentionally fostered ace's resentment towards luffy in their early childhood

told ace it was his own fault he landed where he did

falcon punched marco halfway across marineford

for help?

and that's not even mentioning the fact that up until that point, ace didn't believe he deserved to live. he didn't think he had the right to exist. the only thing that kept him going up until that point was hoping he'd find an answer that justified his being born and his love for luffy and sabo. ace tells luffy in his dying breaths if it weren't for the two of them, he would have gave up on living a long time ago

yes, garp loves ace and luffy

he loves them both dearly but he is also incapable of putting them before work, before his ideals of justice. these two truths can coexist at the same time. garp's stubborn to a fault and his moral dilemma resulted in both inaction and the prevention of ace's escape

so to say that marineford would have gone differently if ace had asked is seriously undermining the character work. because in reality, it's up in the air on whether or not that would have done anything. ace asking garp for help could have gone either way and that's the beauty of the gray area regarding garp's actions during the summit war

and yes, i can get why it's frustrating that ace turned around to fight akainu when he could have just left and got it back in a blood a different time

but aside from ace having a temper about specific topics, we do get an answer as to why he couldn't bring himself to runaway when we finally are able to dive into his past with luffy and sabo:

he doesn't want to run away from any situation because ace is deathly afraid of losing something if running away ends up being the bad call

and in that moment, luffy was behind him

even if akainu hadn't talked down whitebeard, ace would have inevitably turned back around because he wouldn't have been able to shake his fear of losing something or someone he cared about

as long as there is something precious for him to potentially lose, ace will never run

he was doomed from the start

his being the son of gol d roger doomed him from the start

and that's what makes ace so tragic

That’s all Vi can process after the battle, after Powder’s monkey bomb had gone horribly wrong and ended with Vander, Mylo, and Claggor dead. Vi’s always been strong, always been brave and composed. But in this moment: she’s just a broken teenagers, tear marks staining her cheek.

You cough from the smokey air, wiping your own tears away as you stumble to your feet. “Vi,” you cough, stepping over to her. 

Vi’s eyes widen when she sees you. “What are you doing here?” She exclaims. “I told you not to come. You could’ve-“ she cuts herself off, gripping your shoulder. She’s half frustrated you didn’t listen, consumed by her grief over her adoptive father and brothers, and half relieved you’re okay.

“Vi!” Powder bounds over to the both of you in childlike excitement. “I did it! My monkeybomb finally worked.”

Vi’s eyes go dead. Your stomach drops.

“You did this?” Vi stares at her younger sister in disbelief. “Why-?"

“I was saving you both,” Powder responds, but you can hear her excitement fading when she takes in the casualties, her own tears beginning to form. “I- I just wanted to help.”

“I told you to stay!” Vi moves through the stages of grief more quickly than you’ve ever seen, anger overcoming her. 

You see her hand coming up, and whatever adrenaline that rushes through you at that moment is enough to cause you to step between the sisters. You know Vi’s angry, that she can’t hit her sister. Not like this. Vi’s hand falters, but her eyes flash with fury. She steps around you in a moment. “I’m going!” 

“No!” Powder shrieks, completely distraught. “Why are you leaving me?”

“Because you’re a jinx!” Vi screams, voice hoarse from her devastation that’s hidden behind her anger.

“Stop!” You step in, eyes shiny with your own tears. “Stop, we can’t do this!”

“She’s the reason for all of this!” Vi seethes, and before you know it, she’s turning her back on both of you and moving away from the scene. Half of her expects you to follow her, but all she knows is that she needs to get away from the area, get away from all the pain she’s in.

The next few minutes are a blur. You’re torn between Vi and Powder. You want to run after Vi, to comfort her, to make sure she’s okay and bring her back to reconcile. But you can’t leave Powder like this, helpless on her own.

“Give me one second,” you gasp through your sobs, trying to soothe Powder with just your voice. “We’ll figure this out, I-“

You cut yourself off when you see Enforcers headed straight for Vi’s retreating form. “Vi!” You scream louder than you ever have before, your feet carrying you towards her. But she’s too far, and you’re helpless as she’s taken by them.

You sob, casting a glance back at Powder, tears blurring your vision to the point where you almost can’t see. But what you do see, in that moment, is a tall figure that you recognize as Silco. Headed for Powder.

You’re sprinting, feet moving more quickly than they ever have. You can’t process anything, there’s no thoughts. It’s pure instinct and adrenaline when you scoop a weeping Powder into your arms and run until you can’t breathe anymore, until all you can see are the tops of the Piltover buildings that loom overhead.

6. I am back again, please, you are wonderful, i need help finding another fic. (One day i will start logging the titles of fics I love.) I know the plot, but all my keyword/tag searches have been unsuccessful. So, For a Fic Finder: It's a modern (no magic) fic set just as we went into full pandemic lock down. (It may have been set in Canada - but I'm not positive on that detail.) Wei Ying is an artist--a painter, and he lives with Lan Zhan, who (i think) teaches music. They are friends but not yet a couple at the fic's start. A big plot point is Wei Ying has a setious unspecified auto-immune disease (i recall one symptom was painfully swollen joints) that is debilitating when it flares up. It also means he has to stay strictly home due to his immune system being compromised. Let's see...Lan Zhan has bunnies and as he gets really depressed during lock down, he uses his hefty trust fund to shop online for increasingly ridiculous/expensive stuff (think stuff like jeweled bunny water bowls from Tiffany and Cartier). Eventually, Wei Ying and Lan Zhan confess & get together. The only thing after that, that is sad, is how much they both miss LZ's son, A-Yuan. A-Yuan & Jingyi are at university and initially stay with Jiang Yanli when campus shuts down. Wei Ying thinks that they won't be able to come home for break as planned, because they don't want to risk Wri Ying getting covid. But the ending of the fic is both boys secretly super quarantine themselves and then borrow a car and drive the long road home. A-Yuan was adopted by Lan Zhan and at the very end he calls Wei Ying "Dad," which is a huge deal to Wei Ying.

It was a modern au where WWX was a spy and had to break up with LWJ but he ends up getting injured and breaks into LWJ’s place to bleed out on his couch after not seeing him for years. I know LWJ was a surgeon or at least a doctor in the fic and that Lan Yuan shows up as a kid LWJ meets at the hospital. Wen Qing and Lan Xichen are also in it from what I recall. Wei Ying lives as a famous actor, Jiang Ying, where his fans regularly know that he is a troll --- Wei Ying tends to tweet. There was this whole thing where a fan brought up how Wei Ying looks like this old legend story Wei WuXian and Wei Ying actually responds to the comment online and confirms it to be true. No one takes it seriously bc well they know Wei Ying is a prankster. (This ofc, is the time that Wei Ying is NOT lying)

Wwx is teasing Lwj in the library pavilion like usual, but pretty much freezes because it’s storming outside. It was then revealed that wwx’s fear of storms came from his fear of lightning, which of course stems from his trauma related to madam Yu.

Maybe with WY being a prisoner in the Lan sect and A-Yuan stays with him, LZ does not know him and hates him but then gets to know and understand him better? And then he leaves CR for some time and JGY of SS possibly do something to make WY seem guilth and whipped so when LZ returns he is livid and proclaims marriage? But sadly i don't remember who's fic that was :( Though i don't remember WY's sibs being there, so maybe that's another one. Also in the one i read WY wakes up after the whipping and finds out LQR and LZ cared for A-Yuan during blackout… It was an interesting one anyway

The one specific identifying detail I can provide is WWX being in chronic pain from the core removal and WQ trying to figure out a way to help him. At least one instance of WWX trying to hide/downplay the pain and basically collapsing before he accepts the help. @linderel

Alas, this is a good fic but not the one I'm looking for! Pretty sure the one I want has WQ sticking WWX with acupuncture needles for pain management, and WWX actually experiences flare-ups of acute pain (and no it's not RoseThorne's fic either, they are definitely at LP not BM)

About the fic:

It's been a long time since I read this one, so it's an older fic (at least more than 3-4 years ago). It was centred around MDZS as a story with Jiang Wanyin as the MC and YLZ as the villain. Our main characters had a whole fandom around it, where LWJ is a famous author and WWX a not-very-popular artist who drew fanart of the most hated character in the book "Yiling Laozu" (I think he was an artist, could also be a fellow writer).

I remember there was lot of fandom discourse about WWX and his choice of character to support and how YLZ was always jealous of JWY and did actually maliciously cause everything he was accused of in this alternate MDZS canon. Then, suddenly, LWJ + WWX end up pairing up for a fandom event (a big bang or smth similar), and WWX has the idea of a story where canon divergence occurs and YLZ is a good person instead (like actual canon) and LWJ agrees to write for it.

This was as far as I had read for it. From I remember it was a WIP. Thanks <3 @indelibleme
