June 30th Update – Final Part for Chapter 3
What to Expect from This Update:
Kick Yesenia out of the OH’s courtyard/house — or simply change the password.
Learn more about Drusilla’s past with Yesenia — and finally get a proper introduction to her character.
Receive your very first memory shard and an item from your past (???) — Also, get a cryptic message from Umorikai.
Discover whose body Caitlyn’s soul has entered (Four candidates resonate with her soul).
Meet your two new servants — learn about their backstories, how they became Lady Anaya's servants, and what they discovered the night the [Surname2] household was mysteriously wiped out.
Get summoned to the Imperial Palace.
Be forced into undergoing a memory scan.
Get into yet another argument with Trysten/Trista, leaving things on a bad note—again.
Lend a helping hand to a dying Prinx — gain deeper insight into their past, and piece together the information they provide about a mysterious figure who appeared in court a century ago — Who is truly behind Lady Anaya’s death? Was it really Trysten/Trista? Take a breather and enjoy a bowl of noodles — just know you’ll probably lose your appetite — Be left with more questions than answers.
Kickstart the revenge route tied to Trysten/Trista’s romance.
Receive the first of many rewards for completing the red-level priority mission.
Finally bind yourself to the space you inherited — and investigate what’s inside — Learn about the origins of the [Surname2] household.
And most importantly — because important things should always be said twice — be left with more questions than answers.
I want to go into a bit more detail about something. With the ending of Chapter 3 providing readers with a pivotal moment in the story, this final part is mostly about discovering key information to kickstart the revenge route. It’s designed to open the door for your MC to start investigating — and the quickest way to do that is by getting close to Trysten/Trista.
I also plan to go back and tweak a few earlier chapters, because with your MC returning to school, exams will be introduced — and that means all the lore I’ve been feeding you will come back and bite you in the rear 💁♀️. To qualify for the Armistice Competition, you’ll need to pass a written test. World lore information will absolutely have its own dedicated page.
I probably don’t have to say this again — it’s in the disclaimer — but I will: you’ll encounter walls of text, and they’re important. They’re not just filler — every detail matters, so please pay attention.
This chapter will be available to my paid Patreon users next week Monday, late evening, as promised. For public users, the full chapter will drop on the official live date I announced. I’ll also compile everything you need to remember so you can go into the chapter prepared. I’m certain it’ll be worth the wait.
Apologies for going off course — I’m beyond tired. Thank you for your patience and support.

The Bodyguard
Chapters 1 and 2
Chapter 3 ->
Chapters 4 and 5 ->
Chapter 6 ->
Chapter 7 (final) ->
Five Hargreeves x female reader, multi-chapter, request
Summary: Five is hired to protect you, a professional ballet dancer, from an obsessive stalker. As the threat from the stalker escalates, Five must navigate his growing feelings for you while keeping you safe
Warnings: Smut, rough sex, choking, bathtub sex, after care
A/N: This was sent as a request for Five romantically linked to a ballerina. It quickly evolved into a crazy story involving a stalker, and turned into a multi-chapter saga. In true Bad Kitty form, it will entail smut and romance and all the good stuff. And yes, it is very loosely based on the great 90's movie of the same name
I will probably post new chapters every couple of days or so, but I don't have a set schedule. Let me know if you want to be added or dropped from my tag list
Thank you to everyone that continues to be interested in my fics. You all are amazing! ❤️😽
Chapter 1: The Ballerina
Five sat in the dingy private investigator’s office, across from the sad and bloated looking man who was interviewing him. As the man droned on in a monotonous tone about sick days (there weren’t any) and health benefits (there weren’t any), Five flexed and unflexed his hand against his thigh in an effort not to walk out of there.
He needed a job. And not just some shitty job cleaning floors or bussing tables. He needed some actual money so he could get an actual apartment and not live in the actual hell he was currently living in.
After he saved the world, and his family was safe, they had been left to fend for themselves. They had their powers, but that didn’t really mean anything in the grand scheme of things. Turns out when you aren’t being manipulated and corralled into superhero fame by your overly ambitious father, no one seems to give a shit if you can teleport or throw knives or commune with the dead. At least not in any way that’s lucrative. It’s an entertaining party trick at best.
So, against his better judgment, Five found himself once again living in an abandoned hellscape. Only instead of an empty world caused by an apocalypse, it was the empty shell of the Umbrella Academy. It was sad and depressing, and not very comfortable, but he would be damned if he was going to shack up with one of his siblings. As far as Five was concerned, that wasn’t even an option.
When Five had figured out a way back to their correct and rightful timeline, he managed to jump them all there safely, including Lila and Sloane. He even figured out a way to age himself up a few years so that he could pass as a young adult and not an adolescent. The only thing he managed to botch this time was arriving one year after their father killed himself, instead of the one day he was aiming for. During that time, the Academy had fallen into disrepair. There had been no signs of Pogo or Grace.
His siblings dispersed to try and fit back into their old lives, or find new ones for themselves. Each one of them asked Five to come with them, but he declined. He wasn’t some kid that needed charity. He could take care of himself. He’d done it for years.
It was now six months later, and Five had not made much progress. He lived inside the dilapidated mansion, roaming around like a ghost that couldn’t move on. He sold some things that were of value that hadn’t been looted, or were hidden away, so that he had enough money to buy food (and booze) and the bespoke suits he had a penchant for. But getting an actual job when you had no credentials to your name, not even a driver’s license, was more difficult than he had thought. Combine that with his baby face and no one took him seriously. No one with any real clout, anyway.
Which is what brought him to this rundown office building he was sitting in today. Klaus was the one that got him the interview, so Five shouldn’t be surprised it wasn’t exactly a high-end joint.
“Anyway, that’s about it,” the tired man said to Five before taking a sip of what had to have been some very stale coffee in a paper cup. “It’s a private security detail. One client. Just have to make sure she gets to and from work ok, and check around her house for creeps. Pretty straight forward.”
“So, I’m a bodyguard?” Five asked suspiciously.
The man shrugged. “I guess if you want to think of it that way. And we’ll give you a car, so add chauffeur in there, too.” He paused. “You got a license, right?”
“I do,” Five answered, which wasn’t a lie. He had a license. It just wasn’t legit. But he could drive, so he figured that was all that mattered.
The guy eyed Five up and smirked. “Luckily we don’t guarantee complete safety, which is why we’re dirt cheap compared to some other places.”
“Why luckily?” Five asked, his eyes narrowing.
The man’s large shoulders moved up and down again with apathy. “You know. You’re not exactly built like Arnold Schwartzenegger, you know what I mean?”
Five nodded slowly. “Sure. But I got the job?”
“Yeah, you got the job. But I will need to make sure you can handle a gun before I send you out there. Legality thing, you know?”
The man reached into a drawer of his beat up desk and pulled out a revolver. Five watched silently as he loaded a few rounds into the chambers and checked it over a few times. He held it up to Five.
“You know what this is?”
“A gun?” Five ventured, just to be a prick.
The man rolled his eyes. “I mean do you know what type it is?”
Five sighed. “A .357 Magnum revolver,” he answered in a bored tone.
The man’s eyebrows raised. “Yeah, that’s right. Have you used one before?”
“A time or two.”
“Now, I’m gonna need to make sure you know how to use it properly.” He handed it over the desk for Five to take it from him. “See how it feels in your hand.”
Five looked the gun over, making a show of feeling the weight of it.
“Feel comfortable?”
“Yeah, I think so,” Five nodded with a smile, right before he turned in his seat and aimed the revolver at the door to the office that he knew led to the back alley.
Before the other man could say anything, Five shot one precise bullet directly into the doorknob, blasting a hole right through it, but leaving the door intact. The noise inside the tiny office was deafening but Five didn’t flinch. Instead, he thoughtfully looked the gun over again, nodded a few times, and set it back on the desk.
“So, I got the job, right?” he asked again, this time standing up and peering down at the man who was still gaping at him while sitting at his desk. Five stuck his hands in his pants pockets and waited for an answer.
“Y-yes, yeah, you got the job,” the man stuttered before clearing his throat and passing a hand over his bald head. He stared at the neatly massacred doorknob. Then he reached over and handed Five a large envelope containing all the specifics of the job. “Here you go. You start tomorrow.”
“And when do I get paid?” Five asked while taking the envelope from him.
“Uh… every Friday.”
Five nodded, already on his way to the door. “Great.” He stopped and turned again. “I’ll need the keys to the car.”
“Oh right!” The man dug around in the desk drawer again before pulling out a set of keys. He tossed them to Five. “Here you go. Black SUV. Parked out back.” As Five caught the keys and turned to leave, his new boss spoke again. “Let me know if you have any questions.”
“I won’t,” Five answered over his shoulder as he walked out, letting the door slam shut behind him.
**************************************
Later that day, Five was poring over the documents inside the envelope. Sitting at the precariously balanced table where he once ate his mom’s smiley face pancake breakfasts, he grimaced and tipped back his third beer of the night.
“What a crock of shit,” he said to himself, his voice echoing off the bare, cement walls.
The envelope held a few documents and legally binding contracts from the security company. From what Five could gather, his new “asset” was a young ballet dancer that was requesting a private security guard for herself. From the sounds of it, she had a stalker, and despite a restraining order, she was afraid for her safety.
Enter Five.
He tossed the papers to the side and sighed, taking a look around him. God, he hated it there. He needed to get out. Even if it was some equally shitty apartment, anything was better than the Academy.
So, if he had to put up with some stuck up ballerina princess in a frilly tutu, then he could do that. He figured if he hung in there for a couple months, played by the rules and collected his weekly pay, he’d have enough to get out of this shit hole. He just had to play his cards right, make nice, and not piss anybody off. He could do that. Piece of cake.
***************************
“Where the hell is this lady?” Five grumbled to himself as he stood outside of the black SUV the security company had assigned him.
He was waiting outside of the address he had been given, where this supposed prestigious dancer lived. It was a giant mansion, set back off the road, with a long, winding driveway that led to the house. Five had turned into the circle drive near the front entrance, cutting off the engine and staring up at the ivy-covered stone and brick exterior. The grand, heavy oak double doors at the top of a set of wide steps were flanked by two large, snarling lion statues.
Five had sighed heavily before getting out of the car and standing next to it. He had been told not to bother knocking; that she would come out on her own at 7:00am.
He checked his watch. It was 7:06. He rolled his eyes and leaned back against the car. “Figures,” he muttered.
At 7:09, one of the doors to the house flew open, banging loudly, as you rushed out, carrying two large gym bags in one hand and a travel mug with your breakfast smoothie in the other. A set of keys dangled from your hand holding the drink, and a pair of sunglasses were perched crookedly on top of your head.
As you tried to close and lock the door behind you, you wrestled with your bags and almost spilled your drink, all while swearing and kicking at the door.
“Stupid… fucking… dumb door never wants to close… piece of shit key… who designed this…“
When you finally got the door closed and locked, you turned to face Five who had been watching all of this go down with a stunned expression. You blushed and then smiled.
“Uh… sorry,” you said nervously. You hoisted your bags up again and made your way down the steps. “The stupid door never wants to lock properly.”
Five realized, a minute too late, that he probably should have helped you with your bags. Instead, he just watched you bumbling around like some sort of cartoon character until you reached the car. You plopped the bags on the ground near Five’s feet.
With a loud exhale, you extended your hand and introduced yourself. “Hi. You must be the guy the security company sent?”
Five took your hand in his, shaking it once before dropping it again. “Five Hargreeves. Nice to meet you.”
Five ran through a kind of inventory of you in his mind. It was a habit he held onto from his assassin days. An immediate assessment of his target.
Slim but toned. Cute face. The tight bun on top of her head is kind of cliche, but whatever. Gray sweatpants, black leotard. Nice enough rack. Scuffed up tennis shoes. A voice that isn’t too annoying. Clearly a disorganized mess though. But all in all, could be worse.
“I’m sorry I’m late,” you gushed. “I couldn’t find my shoes and the blender top flew off while I was making my smoothie, so then I had to clean that up, which was super fun, and then –”
Five cut you off with a hand gesture. “It’s fine,” he said, although he didn’t look like he thought it was fine. He looked irritated.
“Ok,” you said, silently telling yourself to shut the hell up. You looked at the SUV he was standing next to. When he noticed, he seemed to remember why he was there in the first place and opened the back passenger door for you. “Thank you,” you said as you climbed in.
Five flung your bags into the trunk, making note of their weight and how you must be a lot stronger than you look to be hauling those things around. As he came around to the driver’s side, he slid in and started the engine. Before putting the car in drive, he turned in his seat to face you.
“You know, you shouldn’t be just hopping into strange men’s cars like this.”
Your eyebrows raised in surprise. “Excuse me?”
“You have no idea who I am. You didn’t ask for any form of ID or other proof that I’m who I say I am. Anybody can wear a suit and drive a black SUV.”
“Oh… “ you stammered. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. Well, do you have any ID?”
Five sighed. “Well, it’s kind of late for that now, isn’t it? You already got in the car. I could be driving you off somewhere to murder you, chop you up into little pieces, and dump your body parts in a field.”
You looked nervously out the window and your hand came to rest on the door handle. The doors automatically locked with a loud click and you jumped.
“See?” Five said, with his finger on the lock button. “Don’t you have a stalker that I’m supposed to be protecting you from?”
You nodded slowly.
“Well, based on this first impression, I’d say he’s pretty fucking dumb, because you are extremely easy to catch.”
Your mouth hung open and you slow-blinked as you tried to say something in your defense, but everything he was saying made sense. That, and he was kind of scaring the crap out of you.
Five reached over into the glove compartment, and pulled out a piece of paper and a plastic-covered badge attached to a lanyard. He handed them over to you.
“There. Here’s proof I am who I say I am, even though you apparently don’t care.”
You took the items from him, skimming the paper first. It was a signed document from the security agency with their official seal at the top, assigning a Number Five Hargreeves to be your personal security detail. It looked legit. Next, you studied the ID. It was a picture of Five, looking like he would rather be doing just about anything than getting his picture taken, along with his name, title, and some sort of employee number underneath it. It also bore the seal of the agency.
You handed them back to him. “Thank you, I appreciate you showing those to me. You’re right, I shouldn’t have trusted you so easily.”
Five shoved them back in the glove compartment and closed it. “No, you shouldn’t have.”
As he put the car in gear and headed down your driveway, you leaned forward in your seat. “If you’re so intent on making sure I know who you are, why aren’t you wearing your badge around your neck so that I can see it?”
There was a pause. “Because I try not to look like an asshole and wearing that badge around my neck won’t be doing me any favors.”
You sat back in your seat, grabbing your smoothie and rolling your eyes before taking a sip. Well this guy’s a real charmer, you thought to yourself. At least he’s kind of nice to look at.
Your dance studio was about thirty minutes away, and the car was awkwardly quiet as Five drove. You cleared your throat a couple times, but he seemed to ignore you.
“Do you want to turn the radio on?” you suggested.
“Not really.”
You sat there for a minute, pondering. “You know, I did do some research on you beforehand, so I’m not a complete moron. The agency had given me your name. I know you were one of the Umbrella Academy kids and that you can teleport. That must be pretty cool.”
There was no answer from the front, so you tried again. “So what was it like growing up with–”
“Reginald? Not great, actually,” Five interrupted, clearly annoyed with your question.
You bristled at his continued rudeness. “I was going to say Allison Hargreeves, the actress, actually.”
“Oh,” he said, and you saw his eyebrows furrow together in the rearview mirror.
“I love all her movies, especially that last one she did, that rom-com?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Is she nice?” you asked, still trying to break the ice.
“Is Allison nice?” Five asked in return.
“Yeah. You know, she’s so famous and high-class. I always wonder what celebrities are like in real life.”
There was a long pause before he answered. “She’s an idiot. All of my siblings are idiots.”
“Oh,” you said, sinking back in your seat. After thinking for a minute, you sat forward again. “You know, you’re not very nice.”
He chuckled, shaking his head. “No, I’m really not.”
For the next ten minutes, you gave up trying to converse with Five. But then out of the blue, he spoke up.
“So, I read about this stalker guy of yours.”
You weren’t sure if he was going to say something snarky again, so you hesitated. “Oh… ok.”
“They sent me a file on him. Sounds like a real creep. I understand why you would want to hire someone.”
“Oh,” you breathed out, relieved. “Yeah, it’s not been a fun few months, that’s for sure.”
“So what happened? He fall in love with you at a ballet recital or something?”
You let out a little snort of laughter. “Well, first of all, we don’t call them recitals… I’m not six. They are called performances or simply ballet. And yes, that’s kind of what happened. Although I wouldn’t call becoming unhealthily obsessed with someone falling in love.”
“Good point,” Five mused. “But he’s been following you to work?”
“Yes. The studio has stopped letting him in and will call the cops if he tries to, but he still sits in the parking lot in his car waiting for me to walk inside.” You shivered a little. “He just watches me.”
“You have a restraining order, though?”
“Yeah, he’s technically not allowed within a certain radius, but that radius is not very big. And if he stays on public property, there’s not much I can do about it.”
Five nodded. “Does he know where you live?”
“I’m not sure. I’ve never seen him near my house, but I wouldn’t put it past him.”
“Does he go to your performances?”
“Yes. He’s there every single time, rain or shine, sitting in the very last row to comply with the restraining order. He’ll even come to the matinees and return for the evening performances. And he always dresses in a tuxedo and carries a bouquet of flowers that he tosses on stage afterwards.”
“That’s intense. I would imagine that might throw you off your game, knowing that he’s out there.”
“Yeah, sometimes it does,” you admitted. “Which, truthfully, is one of the reasons I wanted to hire you. If I know someone is there keeping an eye on this guy, then I might be able to concentrate on my dancing instead of worrying about what he might do.”
Five’s eyes flitted to the rearview mirror again to look at you. He had nice eyes, you noticed.
“There must be something more. Some reason this guy is freaking you out so badly.”
Your voice got quieter as you answered him. “Well, for the last few weeks he has started sending me letters to the studio.”
“He doesn’t mail them directly to your home?”
You shook your head. “No, thankfully. Now the secretary just throws them directly in the trash when they come through. But I’ve read enough to know what they say.”
“And what do they say?” Five asked.
“They… uh… they say how much he loves me and how much I have changed his life. He says he thinks about me all day and night and knows we would be happy together if I just give him a chance. That he’s not a bad guy, he just loves me so much and I’m not giving him a shot. Sometimes he gets angry because I don’t respond. Sometimes it’s just more rambling.”
“Is that all?”
He must have sensed you were holding something back, which meant he was actually listening to you and was observant.
“No, that’s not all. Sometimes they get very… graphic.”
“Graphic? Like violent?”
“No, more like… explicit.” You blushed a little. “Sexual. All the things he wants to do to me or says he is going to do to me once we are together. It’s all very detailed.” You shuddered at the thought. “It makes me sick.”
“I would imagine,” Five said with a small nod.
He didn’t say anything else on the subject and you didn’t volunteer any more information. Soon, you were arriving at your dance studio. While your first impression of Five wasn’t exactly blowing you away, you did note that he seemed to take his job seriously. When he got out and walked around to your side, he surveyed the parking lot before opening the door for you.
You got out and looked around. When you noticed the familiar dark blue pickup truck parked in the back, occupied by a tall, thin man wearing a baseball cap, you pointed him out to Five.
“There, that’s him.”
Five nodded. “I saw him when I got out. I’ve got my eye on him.”
You smiled. “Thank you.”
“You don’t need to thank me. This is what I was hired for,” Five responded, as if that were the most obvious thing in the world.
“Right. Well, can I get my bags then?”
Five hauled your bags out and handed them over to you. “I would carry them for you, but I need my hands free. Just in case.”
You understood what he was saying, and it made sense. If he needed to use a weapon, he couldn’t be carrying two bags stuffed with dance attire and water bottles. As you walked towards the door, Five accompanied you, staying close. You were always observant of how other people carried themselves, probably because you used your body as a way of artistic expression, so you were honed in on others’ body movements as well.
Five held himself confidently, walking swiftly and with purpose. You liked how he matched your stride so that he didn’t stray too far ahead or behind. And you liked how his suit coat brushed against your arm a few times. You stole a couple of quick glances at his face while you were walking, but looked away before he could notice. There was no denying he was handsome.
When you led him inside, this observation was confirmed by the number of sideways glances and outright gawks that he received from the other dancers. Male and female. You kept your head down, embarrassed to be seen with an actual bodyguard in tow, and headed for the locker room to change. As you got to the door, you turned to Five.
“I’m not sure how this works, exactly,” you admitted. “Do you wait here? In the car?”
Five looked around curiously, taking in his surroundings. “I’ll be here, in the building. Don’t worry, I won’t get in the way. I might take a few looks outside periodically, but I won’t stray far.”
“Thank you.” You paused, remembering that you weren’t supposed to thank him. “I rehearse for six hours, though,” you added guiltily.
Five shrugged. “That’s fine. When you’re done, I’ll take you home again.”
“Alright, then,” you said with a nod and a smile. Then you walked into the locker rooms, leaving Five in the hallway.
****************************
Five waited, as he told you he would. He wasn’t exactly thrilled about having to hang around in a dance studio all day, but he was used to having to endure long, boring stretches of time by himself. At least in this case, there were some nice views to be had. Five tried not to be obvious, but the beautifully sculpted bodies that walked past him all day long were not going unnoticed. About halfway through the day, after Five had taken a quick survey of the parking lot, he decided to park himself in front of the window that looked into the large rehearsal room. He didn’t know much about ballet, so he was a little curious about it.
As he stood there, arms folded across his chest, he watched as you and your fellow dancers practiced the same few steps over and over again. The director was demanding perfection each time, and from Five’s point of view, it was perfect. He couldn’t stop staring.
The fluid movements of your body had him transfixed and he kept his eyes on you, ignoring the other dancers twirling around you. You gracefully lept and flew through the air like some sort of beautiful gazelle or mythical fairy creature. You had removed your sweatpants and were wearing a black leotard with gray leg warmers, and of course your pointe shoes that allowed you to dance on your toes.
Your legs were nothing but muscle and sinew, toned and tightened by years of discipline. The way your arms bent and swayed with each movement looked easy and second nature, even though Five knew it must have been incredibly difficult. You made it all appear effortless, and Five found he was staring a little too long, because at one point you turned toward him and caught him. You gave him a small smile before returning to your work, and Five moved to a different area where he wouldn’t be tempted to watch.
On one of his wanderings, he came across photos of the dance company members lining a wall. He paused, glancing over the names and faces, casually looking for yours. It wasn’t hard to find though, because there you were, front and center. A professional headshot of you, larger than the others, was framed in the middle of the wall. Underneath was a small plaque with your name and the number of years you had been with the company. It also read “principal dancer”.
When the day was over, and you had showered in the locker rooms there and changed into clean clothes again, Five led you back to the SUV. Your stalker was still there, waiting in his blue truck, until you were inside the car and then he drove away. It was what he always did. Waited until you were finished with your day and then left. You wondered where he went or where he lived. But you also didn’t really want to know.
As Five drove you back home, it was silent for a while before he spoke up.
“What is a principal dancer?”
You were surprised at first by his question. You didn’t really think he would take an interest in anything personal having to do with you. But he must have seen your photo inside the studio.
“A principal dancer has the highest rank within the dance company,” you explained, feeling your face flush a little. “Sometimes they’re called prima ballerinas.”
Five took that in for a second. “So, you’re the best dancer?”
You laughed. “I wouldn’t say I’m the best, necessarily, but I’ve definitely paid my dues. There are many talented dancers in our company.”
“But not as good as you,” Five said. You saw his eyes glance in the mirror again. “I saw you.”
You nodded. “I saw you watching. Do you like ballet?”
“Not particularly, no,” he answered honestly.
“Oh. Well, that’s a shame.”
“I enjoyed watching you, though,” he said, and you thought you heard his voice crack just a tiny bit as he said it. Then he cleared his throat. “Not in a stalker way. I just mean the dancing was interesting.”
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
There was more silence as the car sped along en route to your house. You couldn’t help the tiny smile that formed on your face as you looked out the window. This guy was starting to grow on you.
When you arrived home, he got out and opened the car door for you again, this time taking your bags for you as you both headed up the stairs to your front door.
You laughed nervously. “I feel like this is a date and you’re walking me home.”
Five shook his head with a slight smile. “Not a date. I’ll just make sure you get in safely and there are no signs of forced entry, and then I’ll be on my way.”
“Got it.” You turned to unlock the door and then stopped, turning to face Five again. “So, there’s something you should know.”
“What’s that?”
You looked at your feet. “Well, it’s just that this house… I know it looks fancy and you probably think I’m some rich bitch snob, but… “ Five couldn’t deny that, so just waited for you to finish. “Let’s just say don’t judge a book by its cover, ok?”
Five didn’t say anything at first, until he realized you were actually waiting for a sign of acknowledgement. Then he nodded. “Ok.”
You unlocked the door and let Five step inside first. You held your breath as you watched him walk into the grand foyer and take everything in. You knew what he was probably thinking. That he couldn’t believe you lived in such a shit hole.
Five spun slowly around, looking at the open first story of your house. Once upon a time it had been a beautiful mansion. Now it resembled more of a construction zone than anything else. The walls of the massive living room that were lined with faded, gold-striped wallpaper, were half-torn down or riddled with holes. Only half of the lights worked in the house, leaving just a few old sconces on the wall flickering dimly. A sitting area on the other side of the foyer was filled with old, dusty furniture that had collected over the years that were in various states of disrepair. A grand piano sat off to the side, covered in a large sheet to keep the dust and dirt off. It was one of the only things in the house that you cherished.
You sighed and laughed quietly. “Home sweet home.”
Five looked at you curiously, his head tilted slightly to the side. He slid his hands into his pants pockets and rocked back on his heels.
“You’re right, this is not what I expected from the outside.” He looked around again. “What happened?”
When he asked you that, you got a sense that he didn’t mean what happened to the house, but rather, what happened to you for you to end up living this way.
“This was my grandmother’s house. She grew up here and lived here her entire life. When I was little, I used to come here all the time. Even then it was starting to become a little disheveled. Nana wasn’t much of a housekeeper.” You laughed at the memory. “But she was fun and a little crazy, and she took me to my first ballet when I was five. After that, I used to dance right here in this foyer, pretending I was the star of the show, while she played the piano.”
“She paid for my first dance lessons and came to every recital. But then her mind started to go and her housekeeping skills got even worse. The house fell into disrepair over the years and she kind of just shut herself inside while it deteriorated around her. I tried to help, but after a while she didn’t remember who I was.” Your eyes filled with tears. “That was the worst part.”
“What about your parents?” Five asked.
“They’re still around, but they don’t really see my dancing as a real career. I think they still view me as a little kid playing dress up.” You shrugged. “They wanted me to be a doctor or something they could be proud of.”
Five’s eyebrows creased together. “They should be proud of you now. You’re the captain of the dance team.”
You laughed loudly, which made him crack a smile. “Principal dancer, but yeah… close enough.” You shook your head. “It’s not enough for them.”
“So, what made you end up here?”
“Well, when my grandmother died, she left all her possessions to me. She didn’t have much in the end, just a couple thousand dollars and this house. So, I decided I’d live here until I could afford to either move somewhere better or fix it up. No one wants to buy it in the state it’s in. Unfortunately, on my salary, that will take a while.”
“Dance captains don’t make good money?” Five asked with a smirk.
“Not really, no. For the amount of work we put in, our dedication, and the discipline we have for our bodies… it’s really not much. But I figure the house is free, so I might as well stay here and save up. I don’t need any place fancy, anyway.”
Five nodded, his green eyes searching your face before pushing his hair off his forehead. “I should take a look around, just to be safe. Then I’ll leave you alone for the night.”
“Ok, yeah,” you started walking further into the house. “Follow me, I’ll show you around.”
You gave Five a tour, leading him through each aging area of the house and taking him through the outdated kitchen that still, embarrassingly, contained some of the remains of your spilled smoothie from that morning. The two of you walked up the grandiose, winding staircase so you could show him each bedroom and bathroom. When you came to the master bedroom, which was the one you had taken over, you paused with a smile.
“This one might surprise you.”
You opened the double doors to the bedroom with a flourish, presenting the room to Five like it was some sort of splendid wonderment. He stepped inside with you and you gestured around.
“I decided to splurge and make this my little home within a home,” you explained.
The room was big, and you had kept your grandmother’s antique four poster bed, but spruced it up with a luxurious, light pink comforter, fluffy pillows, and a couple strings of fairy lights overhead. The dressers and vanity mirror were also original, but you had refinished them and added new, updated hardware. A small reading nook with a big, comfy armchair and bookshelves took up one corner of the room.
Five hadn’t said anything as he looked around, which made you a little self-conscious.
“So, yeah… this is where the magic happens,” you joked, laughing stupidly at yourself and then blushing.
Five just gave you a semi-amused look, but didn’t comment further.
You cleared your throat. “Here, let me show you the bathroom. This will really blow your mind.”
The en suite bathroom was the crown jewel of the house and just as large as the bedroom itself. It was the one room your grandmother had kept up and it was still beautiful.
“She loved baths,” you said as you motioned to the gigantic soaking tub that was big enough for four people.
It was surrounded by gorgeous, expensive marble tile, with a stand alone shower that was also impressive. You had lined the ledge around the tub with candles and scented soaps that you loved to use after a long day of dancing. The sink and cabinets were adorned with gold accents, but without being too gaudy. You had added plush, pink towels and other accents to give it your own flair.
“Pretty cool, huh?”
Five nodded. “It’s definitely impressive. Your grandmother seemed to have good taste.”
“Yes, she did.”
After another few seconds, Five turned to you. “Is there anywhere else I need to look before I leave?”
“Oh,” you said, suddenly feeling a little stupid that you had been showing off your bathroom, when really all he wanted to know was that everything was locked up safely. “No, this is it. In terms of outside access points, anyway.”
“Just make sure you keep all doors and windows locked. Even on the second floor.” He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a card, handing it over to you. “Here’s my number. Call me if you need anything or you suspect anything.”
“Yeah, ok. Thank you.”
With another nod, Five turned to head back out of the room. You followed him down the stairs until you were at the front door. He opened it and then turned to you again.
“You know, you really shouldn’t lead a strange man through your house like that. There were several spots where you would have been trapped with no way out if I had ill intentions.”
You rolled your eyes. “Seriously?”
Five smiled crookedly. “I’m just saying… you shouldn’t be so trusting.”
You eyed him up for a minute, trying to determine if he was making fun of you or not. You decided to see if you could rattle him a little. “And what kind of ill intentions would you be thinking of… you know… if you had any?” You put your hand on your hip and cocked it to the side.
Five wasn’t so easily thrown off his game, though, and he didn’t even flinch at your flirty invitation. With that same half-smile he shook his head. “See you tomorrow morning.” He paused, looking back on his way down the steps as you stood in the doorway. “Same time? Or should I factor smoothie accidents into the equation?”
You laughed, despite your annoyance. “I promise I’ll be on time.”
“Good night, then,” he said, before heading to the car.
“Good night, Five.”

Chapter 2: The Letter
When Five arrived back at the Academy, he went immediately to the bar, just like he always did, and poured himself a generous glass of whatever he was in the mood for at the moment. Tonight it was bourbon. And not a bad one, either. He took a sip and sighed, letting the smokiness of the liquor burn deliciously down his throat.
Five shrugged off his jacket and vest, loosening his tie and rolling up the sleeves of his shirt as he sat heavily on one of the old bar stools. The house was quiet except for the occasional whistle of wind through an exposed crack, or an ominous creaking noise from somewhere within the old foundation. It all added to the overall ambiance of a haunted house that Five was starting to grow accustomed to.
As he sat there, ruminating on the happenings of the day, he spun the chipped crystal glass idly on the bartop in front of him.
He wasn’t sure what to think of you. He had been expecting a rich, stuck-up princess type, but that’s not what you were at all. Instead, you were surprisingly pleasant; and Five didn’t find most people pleasant. So, this was fairly new territory for him. During the few short interactions he had with you throughout the day, he found himself enjoying your company. Again, this was all new for Five.
He thought about how you and he weren’t that different in some ways. You were both living alone in these big, crumbling mansions that appeared impressive from the outside but were a mess on the inside. If Five really wanted to go down that road, he could make the case that your houses were metaphors for yourselves. But the last thing he wanted to do was to start analysing his psyche, so he moved on.
He found himself lost in a daydream of you dancing effortlessly and gracefully around the dilapidated halls of the Academy, just like he had seen you dance in the studio that day. In his fantasy, you were surrounded by a golden halo of light that brightened every room you passed through. What a contrast your elegance and beauty was when compared to the darkness of the mansion. He smiled at the thought.
He thought of how you had made the best of your situation and had actually carved out a space for yourself in that old house; making the master bedroom and bathroom into your home within a home. Five looked around him. He had done nothing like that. The thought had never even occurred to him. He had made the space livable, at least for his meager needs, but it was in no way a “home”. He had not decorated it with things he liked or found interesting. He hadn’t brought in any new furniture or tried to fix what was there. He had essentially made it like his camp he had with Dolores during the apocalypse. A relatively safe place to come back to every day. A place to survive.
Five then thought of your stalker. He had no sympathies for this unknown and possibly dangerous man that was obsessed with you. But he could almost see his side of things. Especially if this man had seen you dance, Five could see how that could spark some sort of unhealthy, imaginary romance. Not that he would hesitate to take that fucker out if he needed to, or that he would ever stoop to such a pathetic level himself, but still. He kind of got it.
He started taking a mental inventory of all of the access points in your house that he had noticed while you had led him around. You had told him that you didn’t think your stalker knew where you lived, but Five had his doubts. Why would this guy stop at just the studio and theater? If he was that hung up on you, then there was no reason to believe he wouldn’t have followed you home at some point.
Again, Five’s mind wandered back to your dancing, only this time instead of the Academy, he pictured you twirling around in your beautifully marbled bathroom. The candles that surrounded the edge of the tub were lit, illuminating your face and body with flickering light. And then somehow… for some reason… Five started to imagine you in less and less clothing until you were fully nude. Your strong body and defined muscles flexed and moved with each sensual pose you demonstrated for him, all while growing closer and closer until you were right there in front of him. Your warm skin pressing against him… your soft mouth a mere inches away…
“Five,” you whispered and god damn it if he didn’t want to drop to his knees at just the sound of his name on your lips.
“Five!”
Five jumped, startled out of his fantasy by a very real and familiar voice.
“Fivey! Hello? Where are you?”
Five groaned before tipping his head back and yelling in response. “Klaus, where the fuck do you think I am?”
Klaus sauntered into the parlor, looking around him as if he hadn’t just been there a few days ago. He spied Five sitting at the bar and he broke out in a smile.
“Oh, hey there, Fivey.”
With a roll of his eyes, Five took another drink before addressing his brother. “Klaus, I only occupy one room of this crap hole, and it’s the same room every time, so I’m not sure where your confusion is coming from.”
Klaus shrugged, joining Five at the bar and leaning over to grab one of the bottles from underneath. He unstoppered the half-full bottle of vodka and took a swig. Then he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.
“I like pretending we’re in an old sitcom together. You know, like ‘Honey, I’m home!’ and then you run out with an apron and heels on, carrying my favorite drink for me while I sit in an armchair and smoke a pipe.”
Five turned so that he could lean his back against the bartop. “Klaus, in what universe do you think I would be the housewife in that situation?”
Klaus shrugged again, reaching over to ruffle Five’s hair, which earned him a swat on the hand. “I’m not sure, but you’d look awfully cute in an apron.”
“God, you are disturbed.”
“Thank you!” Klaus responded happily before taking another drink. When he lowered the bottle he sighed. “So, what’s been happening around here?”
“Not much. I started that new security job you turned me on to, so thank you for that.”
“Did you? Oh, well that would make sense.”
“What do you mean?”
“My buddy, the one who is friends with your new boss and told me about the job opening, said some psychopath came in there yesterday and shot up the place. Right before demanding he be given the job.”
Five nearly choked on his drink. “What? I didn’t shoot up the place!” Klaus raised a skeptical eyebrow. Five sighed. “It was one, very tiny and very discrete shot into the doorknob of the door. I wouldn’t call that shooting up the place.”
Klaus smiled. “I see.”
“And I certainly didn’t demand the job. It was offered to me before I shot up the place.” He closed his eyes in frustration. “I mean, before I fired the single, harmless shot.”
Klaus chuckled. He loved getting under his brother’s skin. Even if that did put him at risk for bodily harm.
“So, what is this job anyway? You like a security guard at a mall or something?”
“More like a bodyguard.”
That piqued Klaus’s interest and he put his elbow on the bar, propping his head up with his hand as he smiled slyly. “Ohhh…. Tell me more about that!”
“There’s nothing to tell. She’s a dancer and she has a stalker.”
Klaus gasped dramatically. “Dancer? Like a stripper?”
Five scoffed. “No. She’s a ballet dancer.”
There was another loud gasp that prompted an irritated scowl from Five. “A ballerina! Oh, Fivey… this is like some serious romance shit! I can just picture it… the stalker tries to get to the beautiful, helpless ballerina, threatening to kidnap her or worse… but then you swoop in to save the day, knock the guy on his ass, and then guess who gets the girl?”
Klaus waited as if he expected an actual response from Five. When all he received was a blank stare, he poked Five in the shoulder. “You do, silly! No woman can resist a real life hero saving them from the clutches of the evil villain. She’ll probably reward you by immediately jumping those skinny little bones of yours. Do a little tongue pirouette on your downstairs bits, if you know what I mean.”
“Klaus, what the fuck?” Five responded, running a hand down his face in frustration.
“What? I bet she’s rich, too, huh?”
“Not really, no.”
“Oh,” Klaus answered with a disappointed sigh. Then he perked up again. “But mark my words, Fivey. When she sees what a badass killer you are, she’s going to be on you like flies on shit.”
“What a charming visual, thank you for that,” Five sighed.
“You know what I mean. She won’t be able to hold herself back.”
“First of all, stop being a pervert. Second of all, you don’t even know anything about her. I haven’t even told you what she looks like or her age or anything!”
Klaus nodded. “You’re right.” Then he grinned. “She’s hot though, isn’t she?”
Five took another drink, speaking over the top of his glass. “She is moderately attractive.”
“Ha!” Klaus exclaimed, slapping Five on the back and making him slosh his bourbon onto his good suit pants. “I knew it! Well, good for you, Broseph Stalin. It’s about time.”
“About time for what?” Five muttered while he angrily wiped at his pants with a napkin.
“About time for you to get that new and improved dick of yours wet. You’ve been keeping it sealed up for too long. Time to let that bad boy out for some air!”
“Jesus Christ, Klaus!” Five cried, throwing his hands up. “What is your fucking problem? Can’t you just leave me alone?”
“What? I’m trying to help you out!”
“Klaus, the only thing you are doing is reaffirming my decision to live alone.” Klaus put on his best pout and tried to look hurt. Five rolled his eyes before trying to change the subject. “The job pays pretty well at least, so I should be able to get out of here soon.”
Klaus looked around at the sad remains of their childhood home and nodded. Then he turned to Five with an almost nervous smile. “So, if you move out, does that mean no more drop-ins?“
Five sighed and shook his head. He reached over and patted Klaus on the shoulder, although he didn’t make eye contact. “You’re always welcome, no matter where I end up, Klaus.”
Klaus clapped his hands and tried to lean in for a hug, but was met with nothing but empty air as Five blinked away at the last second. Klaus toppled off his barstool in the process, while Five laughed at him from the other side of the bar.
“You’re an asshole,” Klaus grumbled as he hauled himself back up.
Five smirked. “Yeah, I know.”
*************************
Over the next few weeks, you and Five developed a kind of routine. He would arrive at your house and wait outside by the car every morning at 7:00am on the dot. You would stumble your way out somewhere between 7:08 and 7:15. There was the predictable exchange of Five’s irritated grumblings while you blabbered on about whatever it was that made you late that day. It would end with Five taking your bags and opening the car door, all while smiling and shaking his head at your constant state of turmoil.
You liked your little talks in the car to and from the studio. It was awkward in the beginning, but over time it became comfortable. You would chat about your work and rehearsals, and gossip about the other dancers. There was always a love tryst going on somewhere, but you stayed away from all of that. You didn’t need that drama in your life.
“So, what about you? You never talk about a boyfriend,” Five had asked one day on the way home. You noticed the slight shift in tone when he asked you. Like he was going for an air of casualness but not really pulling it off.
“Oh, no,” you said, waving your hand in the air. “No boyfriend for me.”
“Why not?”
You paused, not really sure how you were supposed to answer that and why he wanted to know. “Well, lots of reasons I suppose. The main one is probably that I’m so busy that I don’t have time to even see my family or friends, let alone a boyfriend.”
“What about the male dancers at your studio?” Five asked, clearly not wanting to drop the subject.
You sighed. “No thank you. Most of them aren’t into women anyway, and the ones that are I have no interest in. Plus I don’t need to be dating anyone from work. I’ve got enough going on.”
Five nodded, keeping his eyes on the road. “Good point.”
You leaned back against the backseat and looked out the window. Then you chuckled quietly to yourself.
“What?” Five asked.
“Oh nothing. I was just thinking that you are the closest thing I have to a boyfriend right now.”
There was a moment of silence before you saw Five swallow. “How is that?”
“Well, other than the dancers in my company, you are the person I see the most lately. You’re there when I get up in the morning, you’re there when I come home. You’re one of the only people that has seen inside my mess of a house, including my bedroom. We talk every day and know each other’s personal lives.” You laughed again. “Honestly, the only thing different is that we aren’t fucking.”
Your giggle came to an abrupt halt as you clamped your mouth shut. You don’t even know why you had said that, it just kind of came out. You worried at your bottom lip with your teeth as you tried to decide whether to say anything else to cover it up or just shut your trap and pretend it never happened.
There was a long, silent pause as the car drew to a stop at a red light. Five’s eyes met yours in the mirror and he didn’t look away.
“Well, that figures,” Five said and you saw him smirk. “I get all of the boyfriend duties and none of the perks.”
Your jaw dropped open for a second and then you let go with a loud peal of laughter. You punched him lightly on the shoulder.
“Five Hargreeves! I never knew you made jokes!”
He shrugged, his eyes returning to the road as the light turned green again. “Well, now you know. I’m a fucking comedian.”
That made you laugh even harder and you tried to suppress the smile that kept creeping up the entire ride home. And even though he tried to hide it, Five was wearing one, too.
************************
Your little naughty joke seemed to have broken the last barrier between the two of you, and after that it was like you were an old married couple. When you weren’t having deep conversations and learning about one another’s lives, you were either cracking stupid jokes at the others’ expense or bickering over the smallest things. Within the span of another two weeks, Five had somehow become your friend. And not just a casual one; he had become your number one confidant. You felt comfortable with him. You felt safe. And you were pretty sure he felt the same way about you.
Your stalker continued to show up every day to your studio, just like always. Sometimes he would get out of his truck and stand there, just watching, as you and Five made your way inside. On those occasions when you felt a little more on edge, Five would blink you directly into the building, to avoid the man being able to see you.
You liked when he blinked you places. He didn’t do it often, but when he did it was like a little adrenaline rush and it always left you laughing. Plus, you couldn’t deny that you liked having him that close to you. He would usually just hold on to your upper arm, but sometimes he would take your hand in his. Once, for no discernible reason, he had wrapped his arm around your waist and pulled you in close. There had been a split second when you thought he might kiss you, but before you could even entertain that thought, you were being ripped through a portal and landing on the other side where he let go of you immediately.
Five also started spending more time outside of your rehearsal room. You would catch him through the window, trying to look like he wasn’t interested but failing. You found yourself flaunting your body just a little more when you knew he was looking. Not so much while you were dancing; that you took very seriously and were focused in. But during breaks, when you took a drink from your water bottle, and just happened to let a small river of water slip down your exposed neck and between your breasts. And when you needed to adjust your shoes and would coincidentally bend over directly in front of his sightline. It was silly, but hey, you didn’t have anything else going on in your non-existent love life, so you had to create some excitement.
While you did enjoy each other's company, your relationship never extended past Five’s security duties. Every night he made sure the house was locked up and safe, and every night he left to go back to his decrepit mansion while you stayed in yours. He had given you his number, but you had never had to use it.
Until you got the fright of your life.
Five had left hours earlier, yet you were still awake and roaming around the spacious house. You settled into a kitchen chair, listening to the sound of the tea kettle on the stove start to come to life with bubbling water. It wasn’t loud enough yet to cover the noise you heard coming from outside, though. A noise that made you freeze like a horror-stricken statue in your seat.
It was the unmistakable sound of car tires rolling slowly up the gravel driveway to your house. The noise became louder until it stopped altogether. And then you heard a car door open and slam shut again.
“Oh my god,” you whispered to yourself.
You hopped up, racing over to the light switch on the wall and clicking it off. Then you crawled into the living room, staying low to avoid the windows, and switched off the lamp you had been reading beside earlier. The house was now in total darkness as you listened to a pair of heavy footsteps make their way to the front door.
You held your breath as you crouched next to one of the old sofas. Maybe it was Five, you thought to yourself. Maybe he forgot something or was just coming to check on you. You rolled your eyes at your stupidness. The footsteps came to a halt near the door. There was a moment of pure terror while you waited for whatever was going to come next.
Would they break a window to get inside? Kick in the door? Would they find you huddled on the ground and put a bullet in your head? Or worse things you didn’t even want to entertain?
After a few seconds, the same footsteps began to retreat and fade further away. You heard the car door open and shut again and the tires crunch on the gravel, presumably as the car backed down the driveway. And then everything was silent again.
When the tea kettle in the kitchen came to a full boil and shrieked its alert to you, you screamed out loud, your voice echoing off the walls. You clapped a hand over your mouth, but started making your way towards the kitchen again, still on your hands and knees. Once you stood and were able to move the kettle off of the burner and silence it again, you leaned against the counter and took in a big, shaking breath.
“Holy fuck,” you cursed.
After at least another ten minutes of keeping still, there were no other worrying sounds from outside or inside, and you switched on the light in the kitchen again. After slowly making your way to the front door, you peered into the peephole. When all you saw was the dark outside and an empty porch, you breathed a sigh of relief. But, like an idiot, that wasn’t enough. Unlocking the door as quietly as possible, you opened it just a crack so that you could quickly peek outside.
There was no one there and you were about to close the door and lock it again, when something caught your eye. In the open maw of one of the lion statues on the porch was a white envelope, giving the illusion that the lion was delivering you some mail. Taking another hurried look from side to side, you leaned over to snatch it up and slammed the door shut, locking it and pressing your back against it while you caught your breath.
With trembling hands, you looked down at the letter-sized envelope in your hand. Your name was typed neatly on the front with a hand-drawn heart next to it. You made a little groaning noise and tried to blink back the tears you felt forming in your eyes.
Five. It was the first thought you had. I need to get to Five.

Have you ever wondered how the Life Series would look like as a videogame?
Then I bring to you…
Project LUMEN: APPLICATIONS OPEN!!
Ever wanted to relive the stories woven by the Watchers, exceeding the limits of what Minecraft is able to offer? How about venturing in a perilous journey full of twists and turns, and most importantly, loooooooooooore?
Well, why hello there! To kick off the start of 2025, Kori, Arto and Pinkie here, and we are proud to present “Project LUMEN”! Our newest scheme to conceptualize and develop a video game based off the traffic-colored hearts we are all so familiar with. An ambitious project, that’s for sure, and that is why we are opening applications to join our little team, right on time to welcome the new year! :]
(way more info under the cut, get ready)
Once a pile of jumbled, senseless ideas, Project LUMEN has evolved into a more fleshed-out collection of story beats and mechanics. An RPG-like game revolving around the tales within the Life Series, a collection of death games ran by the mysterious deities that call themselves Watchers. The player takes on the role of the Watcher Child (affectionately referred to as WC), following and guiding the Champions chosen by the Watchers themselves through challenges and enemies. Featuring unique leveling systems, DnD inspired classes, and, most importantly, the ability to impact the story with the choices you make… because, after experiencing all the Life Series seasons from both the Watcher and the Player side, maybe you’ll have a change of mind. After all is said and done and seen, the world is yours to shape, Watcher Child.
Right, so that’s a basic summary of the concept we have, now here’s a little preview of what we have written for the prologue :3
Chapter 0: ‘The Watcher’s Apprentice’
The player takes the form of a Watcher in training, an ageless child, the Watcher Child. The most powerful and ancient Watchers, unexplained cryptic creatures that live up to their name by watching all, talk about a new series of experiments they have been running, called “The Life Series”.
The only rundown that the WC was given was that a carefully selected group of talented players were asked to test their little Life game for them, where they each have only three lives. Whoever survives last, wins. There were no rules as to how they could play the games. The Watchers then add that they, along other WCs, will be observing from the viewpoint and thoughts of one of the players. This is so the WC can get an idea of the Watchers' work. Of course, our little WC was ecstatic and ever so curious about this new idea.
Fast-forward (and after a couple of tutorials showing off the bare basics of the battle mechanics in the actual game), now our WC was standing in a circle with other apprentices just like them. The Watchers then hold a deck of mystic cards in front of each of them, and everyone picks one. When the cards are revealed, our WC sees a glowing, red card with a person on it. The card simply said, "THE SUN".
Huh, I wonder who could that be…
Now, we get into the thick of it: who are we searching for to join our team? Well, there are some requirements that the potential members should fulfill, here’s a comprehensive list of key points:
We are mainly looking for artists to help us with designs, sprites, backgrounds and UI. Although, we also welcome any writers willing to help us with developing concepts and adding more ideas!
Every person who applies should be involved with the Life Series fandom, we want to build a team with people as passionate about this Minecraft series as we are!
When answering the Application Form, please type in your favorite type of flower (in case you do not have one, just write 'sunflower') in the "Anything else to add?" part, this is only to ensure you've read the announcement :]
Welp, glad you asked. The current plan is, while the applications go on for a week or two, constantly post pieces of concept art and just story bits on this blog, then all the people selected to join the team will be added to the blog as members. We plan to post updates, concept art, sprites and small lore drops periodically on that blog to hopefully garner an audience, and it will also be open for asks and suggestions so that, even if some users aren’t part of the team, they can still help bring this absolute beast of a game to life. Ideally we will work on a small demo experience first with placeholders and stuff to just get the mechanics right and get some testers, and after that, use all feedback, polish the art, deliver a beta version for playtesting, then fix the last details and then release the full version on itch.io, that’s our roadmap. :D (there's the possibility to also publish a browser version to Newgrounds with mobile compatibility tho, so mobile users do not fear!)
Well, Project LUMEN is a very, very hefty task, a big plan to undertake, and, in all honesty, too much work for only three people. Also, talking from experience, having other person involved in development has helped LUMEN to give gigantic steps, helping to ground ideas and give inspiration, now, imagine how far we could go if we had more people in this squad. We are not only looking for artists, we are looking for people whom we can brainstorm with and throw concepts around to polish them and grow the game even more. However, we also wish to keep the team directly working on the game fairly reduced, we are thinking 3–5 people more, but depending on the amount of responses we have, we might consider expanding that number.
The spirit of the game is to be made by the community for the community, we want to offer a quality game, and, by working together, we will be able to make Project LUMEN the best it can be. Though, you need to be aware that this project is solely fueled by the passion we have for the Life Series, and we will not profit off it at all. Please, take into account that this is likely going to be a months-long project, and only apply if you are willing to put in the effort in the long-run, that’s all we ask for.
On the bright side though, by joining in the developing of the game, you’ll be able to contribute to it as much as you’d like, change anything, add anything! You’ll have your rightful spot in the credits and probably a cameo in-game, the team may be small, but we know that, with the right people, we will be able to get it done (cleo is in the storyline too dw).

Avenger! Bucky Barnes x Winter Soldier! Fem! Reader
Summary: While on a mission to find any more possible super soldiers that were a part of the Winter Soldier program, Steve and Bucky make a discovery in an abandoned HYDRA base that was cleared out a few years prior to their mission. They discover the Reader, a long-forgotten soldier that was still asleep within a functioning cryostasis pod; still awaiting orders. While Bucky isn't happy about it, he is put up to the challenge of helping to rehabilitate the soldier in Wakanda where she may be able to become a person again.

rehab masterlist. chapter 26
After a while of just enjoying the music together, a soft knock on the door had the two super soldier's becoming alert. While Bucky turned to see who was knocking, (Y/n) had just stiffened; staring straight ahead as if to be at attention.
When Bucky noticed Steve standing there, he left the music on auto-play before leaving the room. Steve was gazing at (Y/n) as she slowly relaxed, and Bucky greeted the man with a curious look on his face as he closed the lab door.
"What's going on, Steve?"
Steve glanced at Bucky, stating gently.
"We know how HYDRA was able to infiltrate Wakanda. Come on."
Bucky was reluctant, glancing at (Y/n) for a moment, and Steve tilted his head slightly before he comforted.
"Don't worry, she'll be okay."
Bucky rolled his eyes, mumbling.
"I wasn't worried. Give me the rundown."
Steve snorted, raising his blonde brow at Bucky as the two of them began to walk to the meeting room and he teased the ex-assassin lightly.
"Are you sure? Seems like you're pretty worried."
"Shut up, punk, and just tell me what's going on, would you?"
Steve chuckled while Bucky rolled his eyes, and Steve began to launch himself into an explanation of all of the evidence the Avengers had gathered thanks to Wanda and Rollins.
"King T'Challa informed us that he had sent some advisors to the US for diplomacy and discussing some tech-sharing agreements and contracts. We think Rollins intercepted the delegation, forced the advisors to sneak them in, and when the advisors came back with the equipment, HYDRA was hiding in one of the shipments."
Bucky frowned, asking as he crossed his arms, looking over the files and plans.
"How did they get in undetected?"
Steve sighed and explained, his eyes glancing at Bucky.
"We think that the three scientists were threatened, so they bypassed the system by scanning the shipments that HYDRA was hiding in directly. Then, they escaped to the Serpents Valley to hide out until Rollins gave his orders."
Bucky's brow furrowed deeply, annoyance settling deep within his body, and he asked with a low tone to his voice.
"We got them all, right?"
"Yeah. Thanks to Wanda making Rollins' talk, we were able to get the jump on them. They're being escorted to the US as we speak. Shuri and Tony are teaming up to start investigating the other locations that Rollins gave us."
Bucky nodded, staying quiet for a moment before Steve looked at Bucky, giving the man a soft yet apologetic look. Bucky became uncomfortable, looking at Steve with a confused expression.
"What is it?"
Steve sighed before he opened up gently and softly.
"I'm sorry that I doubted you, Buck. I thought that everything was starting to take its toll on you, especially with what happened with Rollins. I know that you didn't want to do this in the beginning, and I pushed that onto you."
Bucky looked surprised before he turned away, crossing his arms and shaking his head slightly as his hair hung slightly within his face.
"At first, I hated the idea. We didn't know who this woman was, didn't know what her orders were...it was an unknown and a huge risk that we took with her,"
His voice paused, a thoughtful expression flashing through his eyes as Bucky continued.
"but now that we know who she is, what they did...what I did...I feel like I owe it to her...like we have a chance. She's been making incredible progress...faster than what I was able to do. I want to help, Steve. So, when you guys go to take down HYDRA...I'm going to stay here with (Y/n)."
Steve's eyes softened, a small smile coming across his face, and Bucky became embarrassed, looking away to stare down at the plans.
"I'm proud of you, Buck."
Bucky just rolled his eyes, but the sentiment was appreciated, his chest swelling slightly. Bucky shrugged, deflecting just the slightest though Steve picked up on it immediately.
"Have to let it go at some point."
"Right."
Bucky gave Steve an exasperated look before he turned, asking Steve as he began to go back to the lab.
"Just keep me updated...and let me know if I need to help."
Steve nodded, and Bucky walked off. Rubbing the back of his neck, Bucky pursed his lips and began to think. If Bucky had to admit it, he was a bit embarrassed that he never thought of them sneaking in through shipments. If HYDRA was known for anything, it was the outlandish ways that they infiltrated places. They were creative and strategic, like cuckoos planting their eggs in another nest.
At the end of it all, Bucky was just happy and relieved that there was finally an opportunity that he, and everyone else affected by HYDRA, could finally rest.
Though, Bucky knew that it wouldn't be that easy. There would still be fallout; a stray agent here and there, but it was finally starting to seem as though the horizon was finally starting to brighten.
When Bucky got back to the lab, his steps froze; planted straight to the ground. In the lab, (Y/n) was hunched over, her arms crossed and being used a pillow as she slept. Her breathing was slow and even, her face completely relaxed, and Bucky's steps became completely undetectable.
The music was still playing, Doris Day's soft voice filtering through the speakers, and Bucky couldn't help but to observe the woman. Her face was calm; unmarred by the hell that came with HYDRA, and Bucky carefully sat down in a chair just adjacent to her. He was careful and quiet as to not disturb her peaceful slumber, and he turned the music down just the slightest.
Although he was trying not to make it seem like he was keeping watch, his body stood alert, his eyes darting around the room and exits. He didn't mean to be so on guard, but Bucky couldn't help it.
Despite the inner turmoil of whether or not Bucky had a right to help her and to be with her, Bucky couldn't help but to feel a strange sense of protectiveness coming over himself as he looked at her.
This woman whose whole life was constructed and concocted since the moment she was born...she had no idea who she could have been without HYDRA. What person she could have become, what decisions she could have made for herself, what her interests and hobbies could have been.
Fidgeting slightly, Bucky slipped his hair up into a half man-bun before resting his elbows onto the table, clasping his hands together. Pursing his lips a little, his eyes looked down at the table as Doris' voice echoed through the room.
"Sweet dreams 'til sunbeams find you Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you..."
Suddenly, (Y/n) shifted a bit in her sleep, her brow furrowing slightly, and Bucky held his breath as she seemed to settle deeper into sleep. A small sigh escaped her scarred and chapped lips, and Bucky finally relaxed again. In his mind, Bucky couldn't help but to think.
'You must be so tired...when's the last time you ever had a peaceful and comfortable sleep?'
There were nights where peaceful sleep was hard to come by. Nightmares would plague him at every turn, every second that he had a moment to be by himself within his thoughts. In a childish way, Bucky couldn't help but to be jealous of the way (Y/n) was sleeping peacefully.
Then again, it was probably the first comfortable sleep that she'd had in a long time. Did she feel safe now, even if it was subconscious? Was she dreaming? Remembering? Bucky's toes curled within his boots a bit, and he became nervous.
What if she was remembering him? The man that helped do this to her? What if she never forgave him? Bucky bit his lip, and he shook his head a little bit. He couldn't think like that. He had to stay positive.
Even if it was hard.
Bucky's eyes flicked to (Y/n) when she flinched, and he immediately noticed the tell-tale signs of a nightmare. She was trembling in her sleep, her brows furrowed deeply, and she was mumbling, but nothing that was coherent. Bits and pieces, whimpers and sniffles, and Bucky wasn't sure what to do.
If he tried to wake her up, there was a possibility of her becoming hostile. While, yes, he could take her in a fight (as he had found out when they first met) but he didn't want it to end up in a fight.
Pursing his lips again, Bucky grabbed his phone and began to play The Everly Brothers again. He turned the music up a bit, and he breathed a sigh of relief when she began to calm down again.
For a moment, she slept again before her eyes began to flutter a little. Her heart rate began to quicken, and she immediately woke up, alert yet disoriented. Her gaze looked around before landing on Bucky, and he comforted her gently.
"Hey, it's okay."
(Y/n) blinked a bit, and she glanced around the lab again before looking at the speaker. She whispered softly after a moment of hesitation.
"I was...dreaming."
Bucky leaned forward, asking her softly.
"What were you dreaming about?"
Her eyes became distant for a moment before she whispered softly in a tone that was unsure.
"Rebecca."
Bucky's heart dropped into his stomach. He hadn't been expecting her to say his little sister's name, but his heart began to race anyway. Rebecca's face came through his mind, and he swallowed thickly. His eyes watered just the slightest, and it took everything in him to keep his voice steady.
"Rebecca? Who...um, who was she to you?"
(Y/n) seemed to pick up on his hesitation, and she tilted her head a little before she glanced away from him, her eyes becoming distant again.
"The woods...we met in the woods. She...smelled like ivory."
Bucky listened intently and patiently, his jaw clenching just the slightest, and she continued slowly while her brow furrowed as if she was confused.
"She was...a friend...I think. She was...pretty...in the sunlight."
Bucky didn't know why, but his heart began to palpitate. Although Bucky remembered his family, remembered Rebecca, it had been a long time since he'd seen her. Hell, Bucky wasn't even sure if she was alive anymore.
He was too afraid, and too ashamed, to find out.
So, instead, Bucky immediately began to latch onto what (Y/n) was saying; envisioning Rebecca the best that he could as the woman spoke.
"What did she look like? Do you remember?"
(Y/n)'s brows furrowed a bit, and she became unsure, rubbing her fingers as she thought.
"I...don't remember...but her voice...I remember. She spoke about the flowers...and how she missed her brother...James."
Like a gut-punch, Bucky's breath was stolen, and the tears began to come out of his eyes. Covering his mouth slightly, he tried to be quiet; tried to conceal his torment, and (Y/n) looked over at him in confusion. She wasn't sure what to do or say. Did she hurt him?
"I...I'm sorry..! I didn't...I didn't mean to hurt you."
She became afraid, closing up, and Bucky exclaimed loudly enough to make (Y/n) jolt.
"No! No...fuck, I'm sorry. I just...sorry."
He got up, the chair screeching across the floor, and Bucky left the room. The second that he was outside of the lab and away from the window, Bucky collapsed against the wall and began to cry. Holding his hands to his head, Bucky's jaw clenched as he tried to stifle his cries, but the pain was too much; the memories too much.
He should have never stayed at Camp Lenigh with Major Samson.
What had Rebecca thought for all of those years when he had been declared KIA? Granted, he was declared dead for a long time, so she must have moved on at some point...but Bucky didn't think that Rebecca would still think about him after all that time. His heart was shattered, and he couldn't help but to think about how much he missed her. How he missed his mom, his dad...home.
What did it look like now? Was the house still there up on the hill; hidden within the flourishing woods that Bucky knew all-too-well? Was his mothers favorite willow tree still in the yard by the dirt road?
Bucky hadn't tried to visit Shelbyville once. While yes, his home had been in Camp Lenigh for a while, and then Brooklyn after leaving Shelbyville, Bucky had always missed the familiarity that came with the countryside. He had difficulty adjusting to the city life when he moved, getting into fights and learning the way of the streets.
That's how he met Steve; such a scrawny, sickly little thing that had way more bark than he did bite, even if he tried. Bucky had done everything he could to protect Steve, adopting him as if he was his own brother; trying to find that sibling connection that he had lost when Rebecca was sent to boarding school and he left Virginia.
Bucky wondered if Rebecca had kept all of his letters; if she ever reread them sometimes. The soft pattering of feet made Bucky glance up, and he was surprised to see (Y/n) standing there. She looked confused, as if she didn't know why she was there in the first place, but she stayed deathly still as she looked down at him.
She observed his wet cheeks and crying eyes, and she slowly knelt down in front of him before cautiously placing her arms in front of him. Bucky was confused for a moment before he realized what she was trying to do.
She was trying to comfort him.
Slowly, Bucky's hands came to her arms, and the image became a mirror of before when she had held onto him; coming down from her panic attack from seeing Rollins.
Bucky, however, did not grip her arms as tightly as she had; understanding that he was still stronger than her by a large margin and not wanting to hurt her anymore than HYDRA, and he, had. (Y/n) tensed slightly before her voice, soft and grounding, spoke gently.
"There you go."
If Bucky hadn't been so sad, he would have chuckled at the robotic way it had come out. His heart swelled a bit, and he took a few deep breaths. When Bucky calmed down enough, his touch softened more, and he murmured shakily.
"I'm sorry."
(Y/n) looked confused for a moment before she asked him quietly.
"Почему ты плачешь?" (why are you crying?)
Bucky closed his eyes, wondering if he should tell her the truth. Granted, Bucky knew that she would know if he was lying or not. Winter Soldiers were trained to detect deception from their targets when desiring information; focusing on every micro-expression, their words, the tone of their voice...there was never any hiding from a Winter Soldier. Ever.
"I was thinking about...my little sister. That's all. Her name was Rebecca too."
"Was she pretty in the sunlight too?"
Bucky let out a breathless laugh, more tears falling down his face as he nodded extravagantly.
"Yes. Yes, she was."
His voice was broken, a regret within his tone that (Y/n) picked up on immediately, and she wasn't sure what to do. Staring down at his hands that were holding onto her arm, she pursed her lips before apologizing with a broken look within her eyes.
"Извините, я не знаю, что делать. Пожалуйста... скажите мне, как завершить мою миссию." (i'm sorry, i don't know what to do. please tell me how to complete my mission)
Bucky quieted for a moment, shaking his head as he tried to think of what to say. He asked her, a confused look settling on his face.
"Your mission?"
(Y/n) nodded, whispering softly.
"Да." (yes)
Bucky pressed further, sitting up just the slightest as (Y/n) continued to look down at his hands, her gaze seemingly distracted as she admired the warmth and cold of each limb that was upon her skin.
"What do you mean 'your mission'?"
(Y/n) then looked up at Bucky, stating seriously as she gathered the correct words to use.
"My mission...to remember...and...escape HYDRA. я готов отвечать." (i'm ready to comply/i'm ready to answer)
Give them a new face to look at.
Bucky stated gently, looking deep into her (e/c) eyes that were gazing into his so intensely that he almost couldn't handle the weight of her gaze.
"That's up for you to decide. I can't help you like that...all I can do is be here with you...to support you."
Her brows furrowed in confusion and worry, her head tilting slightly.
"Что делать, если я не выполню свою миссию удовлетворительно?" (what if i do not complete my mission satisfactorily)
Bucky carefully moved his vibranium hand to her shoulder, the woman squaring them the second he touched her as he whispered to her.
"Потом мы можем попробовать снова. Столько раз, сколько потребуется. Я не откажусь от тебя." (then we try again. as many times as it takes. i won't give up on you)
(Y/n)'s eyes widened slightly before she looked down at his dog tags that hung heavily around his neck. She'd heard the phrase before, but spoken in harsh tones and angry touches that delegated the inability to fail.
But the words gave her a new insight; a strange feeling that didn't make her scared. Instead, (Y/n)'s shoulders slowly relaxed, and she stated suddenly.
"It..it is fuzzy...but...I remember that...two little ones...were often with her."
Bucky's eyes filled with tears again as he listened closely, a feeling of happiness going through him at the realization that he actually did have family...that at some point, he had became an uncle. Despite this, there was also a feeling of despair to know that he had never been there for them. Did they know that he was alive? Did they know the things that he had done?
Would they even want to know him?
"She would tell me...about her brother...about the time...they were in the woods...and he made fun of her for being afraid of the bugs."
Bucky chuckled softly as the memories when through him, and (Y/n) took a moment to think again, trying to remember more.
"She...she left me too...one day. I...I was taken away...and I don't remember any more."
HYDRA thought it would build emotional range. Make (Y/n) more adaptable when the time came to turn her into the Winter Soldier. More believable in a way...but something went wrong.
Bucky swallowed thickly, and he murmured softly, comforting her softly.
"That's alright. We can try again later."
(Y/n) nodded slowly, and she asked quietly.
"Can I listen to the music again?"
Bucky nodded, standing up carefully, and (Y/n) stood up with him. They went back into the lab, and Bucky carefully began to play the music again. (Y/n) returned to her seat in front of the speaker, and Bucky suddenly got an idea.
"(Y/n), I'm going to make a quick trip, okay?"
(Y/n) turned and asked, her eyes confused.
"A trip?"
Bucky nodded and he stated gently.
"Yeah. Just for a little while, but I won't be gone for too long."
(Y/n) nodded before she became nervous, asking.
"Can I keep listening to the music while you complete your mission?"
Bucky handed the phone to her with a smile.
"Sure. I've got another one."
(Y/n)'s facial expression never changed, but even Bucky could see it within her eyes: she was happy.
Bucky could only hope that he, too, could feel as such after his trip.

STORY NOTES: After listening to more music, Steve comes to retrieve Bucky and tell him about what the team had found about the infiltrations. He reveals to Bucky about the diplomacy trip and tech-sharing agreements, and tells Bucky that the team has theorized that Rollins and HYDRA intercepted the delegations and forced them to help HYDRA get in while staying completely undetected. Steve then reveals that Wanda was able to make Rollins reveal where the rest of HYDRA is hiding. Steve then tells Bucky that he is sorry for doubting him and for pushing the rehabilitation program onto him, and Bucky admits that he hated the idea at first. However, now that Bucky knows that he had a hand in her creation, even if it was small, he feels an obligation to help her and commends her for making great progress. Bucky then tells Steve that when the Avengers begin to take down the rest of HYDRA, he will be staying in Wakanda with (Y/n) to continue helping her.
Steve tells Bucky that he is proud of him, and Bucky responds that he has to 'let it go' at some point, meaning the past. Bucky then leaves to go back to the lab, reflecting on the infiltration method that HYDRA used. He then reflects on his feeling of happiness that HYDRA was finally disappearing, and that though there would still be stray agents, hope was still arriving. When Bucky gets back to the lab, he is surprised to find (Y/n) asleep. He thinks on how peaceful (Y/n) looks, and while Bucky doesn't mean to, he begins to quietly guard the woman as she sleeps. He then begins to wonder what (Y/n) would have done and who she would have become if her life hadn't been completely created for her by HYDRA. Bucky reflects on how hard peaceful sleep can be without the presence of nightmares, and though Bucky feels a bit of jealousy for her peaceful sleep, he is happy that she is finally resting.
Suddenly, (Y/n) begins to have a nightmare. Bucky is unsure of what to do, but before he can take action, (Y/n) wakes up abruptly on her own. Bucky comforts her gently, and (Y/n) tells him that she was dreaming. When Bucky inquires about her dream, (Y/n) reveals that she was dreaming about Rebecca. Shocked from her words, Bucky then asks who Rebecca was to (Y/n), and (Y/n) reveals that her and Rebecca had met in the woods. She adds that she believes Rebecca was her friend. (Y/n) then goes on to tell Bucky that while she doesn't remember what she looked like, she remembers her voice and of Rebecca telling her about the flowers and how she missed Bucky. Bucky begins to cry, and (Y/n) is alarmed, thinking that she had somehow hurt him. Bucky leaves the room, and he reflects on his life. He begins to wonder about Rebecca and what she thought about after his supposed death. He then begins to wonder about what his childhood home in Shelbyville now looks like and if the home is still there.
Bucky then begins to reflect on his life after leaving Camp Lenigh in Virginia to move to Brooklyn, and how he met Steve. He thinks about how he tried to rekindle the feeling of sibling connection through Steve, and then wonders if Rebecca ever kept the letters that he would send to her often before his fall from the train. (Y/n) suddenly appears before him, and Bucky is shocked when (Y/n) tries to comfort him in the same way that he had comforted her. He obliges, holding onto her arms, and he becomes grounded before apologizing to (Y/n). (Y/n) then inquires on why Bucky was crying, and he reveals that he was thinking about his little sister. (Y/n) then apologizes to Bucky, telling him that she doesn't know what to do and to tell her how to 'complete her mission'. Bucky becomes confused, and when he asks her what she means, (Y/n) clarifies and says her 'mission to remember and escape HYDRA'. Bucky is floored, but tells her that it was up to her on how to complete her mission. (Y/n) becomes worried, asking him about what will happen if she fails, and Bucky just says that they can try again and he won't give up on her.
(Y/n) becomes surprised and after a moment, she begins to tell Bucky a little bit more about her memories of Rebecca. She reveals that Rebecca had two kids, which makes Bucky begin to silently cry again and happy yet regretful that he had become an uncle. (Y/n) then tells him that Rebecca had told her about the story of when her and Bucky were younger and he would tease her about her fear of bugs while in the woods. However, (Y/n) reveals that she was 'taken away' but doesn't remember anything more after that. Bucky tells her that they could try to remember more later, and (Y/n) asks if she can listen to the music again. Bucky agrees, and then makes a decision to take a trip. He tells this to (Y/n), and when she inquires about it, Bucky tells her that it would be 'for a little while'. (Y/n) asks if she can keep listening to the music while he is gone, and Bucky agrees. End scene.

➤ find something worth saving (it's all for the taking)
CHAPTER TWO: SPIDEY LUCK (GOOD OR BAD? YOU'LL NEVER KNOW)
← back to chapter list
SUMMARY ↳ You're adjusting well, comfortable with your new life. Too bad your spidey luck came with you to this universe. He offers his arm to you, but you hold out palm. “You’re nice and all, but I’m not letting you know where I live just yet.” He gives you confused puppy eyes. “You’re cute, but not that cute,” you pat his cheek as you walk past him. He watches you walk past him, before remembering himself and calls out. “What’s your name?” “Not that cute!” You remind him. pairing: jon kent x gn!reader x damian wayne warnings: cursing, mentions of discrimination based on financial situation, a vague-ish sex joke wc: 2.7k

Setting up an identity for yourself is remarkably easy. Natasha taught you just about everything you need to know. To the world, you are now [Name] Stark. Tony Stark is an eccentric recluse from Queens, with a mysterious inheritance allowing for travel around the world. And you, his curious child are now old enough to find her own way in the world, starting in Gotham. It’s messy, but hopefully it can keep people off your ass for a while.
Hacking into the wealth of Gotham’s elite is easy enough, stealing little by little every day so that they don’t notice (they probably wouldn’t, anyway). You steer clear of anything and everything Wayne related. For now, at least, it wouldn’t hurt to get ahold of some of his tech down the line.
Walking down the streets of Gotham is something your sense may never get used to. It’s easy to hide feeling threatened by everything, but it’s not easy to stop feeling threatened by everything. While you are certain you can handle a few common thugs or muggers, you are not excited to face your first round of fear gas. If it comes down to it, you’ll rely on your suit to protect you from it… hopefully it can.
Getting to East End is easy enough despite all the leers you get. Selina Kyle’s territory is riddled with crime and misdemeanor as much as the rest of the city, but it’s one of the cheaper areas. You’re legally old enough to get your own place, and with the money you take and a job you can hopefully find, you’ll be able to get by alright. As a hero, you should probably feel bad about stealing, but it’s not like millionaire’s and billionaire’s need a couple hundred dollars.
You walk into the rundown building, surveying the interior. It’s certainly seen better days, if the ripped up wallpaper and stains in the carpet are anything to go by. There’s no one at the front desk, so you ring the little bell and wait. Tapping your foot, your thoughts wonder.
You’ve been thinking about enrolling into Gotham Academy. It’s risky, since Robin goes there (you looked it up earlier, he’s around the same age as you), but you know that school has damn good funding, and good funding means a good lab. A lab or workshop is essential to you as a Spider.
A hobbling old lady stumbles out towards the front desk, her smile is sweet. “How can I help you, dear?”
You put on your best unassuming smile. “I’d like to sign a lease to rent out an apartment here.”
“Sure, hun. Just give me the deposit and it’s yours.”
You’re taken aback. “Surely it’s not that easy, miss…?” You prompt.
“May. Listen kid,” she leans in. “We don’t ask too many questions ‘round here. I can spot a troubled kid from a mile away.”
Of course her name is May. You smile, awkward. “I’m eighteen.”
“Eighteen is nothing on my years, girl.”
You inhale and grasp your hands together. “Well, I know better than to look a gift horse in the mouth. When can I move in?”
May grabs your arm and leads you up the stairs. “First door on the right, third floor.”
The apartment is in one piece, only some cracks in the walls. There’s a distinct smell in the air, but you’ll make yourself used to it. There’s some furniture left behind by the previous owner (a bed too, but you’re definitely replacing the mattress). It’s quaint, for Gotham.
“I should warn you, a lot of stray cats come and go. Don’t be afraid to feed ‘em, they’re already coming back anyway,” May huffs.
You smile discreetly. “I got it.

“I would’ve thought you’d lose interest in those things by now.”
Growing up you dabbled in one thing to the next. Gymnastics, volleyball, cheerleading. At one point you wanted to go to space camp, but didn’t want to be away from your aunt and uncle. Your interests come and go, never staying long, but your love for comics has always been constant.
“I’ve been fighting for my freedom since day one,” you jest.
Aunt May sits down next to you. “You know how rich I’d probably be if I got all the money back from buying you those things over the years?” She leans in, whispering, “richer than Tony Stark.”
You snort. “No one’s richer than him.” You pause, thinking. “Actually, Bruce Wayne might be.”
“Is that the Manbat guy you’re reading about?”
“ Batman , May.”
She kisses your head, grabbing the comic out of your hands. “Well, you know what they say. Bad kids who don’t go to sleep at bedtime get snatched up by Batman and his bird sidekick.”
You lean back against your pillows, wrapping yourself up in your blanket. “No one says that.”
“I do. Goodnight, tiger.”

The past week you’ve been making moves. You land a job as a waitress in a nice little cafe around the corner, and you’ve settled in nicely into your apartment. You find out May likes her coffee 2 cream no sugar and she religiously watches telenovelas. On top of that, you’ve made friends with a black cat you’ve affectionately named Nari.
“Alright K, show me past entrance exams for Gotham Academy.”
Uploading Karen into the laptop you bought allowed for you to multitask much more efficiently. You’re trying to emulate an environment you’re familiar with, like FRIDAY back at the Tower, but you have nowhere near the same budget as Tony does. You sigh. The entrance exams for GA are in a week, but you’re not too stressed. You started taking online classes when you moved into the Tower, and breezed past them like it was nothing. You graduated high school 2 years earlier than normal (you could’ve done it in one, but Tony insisted on human interaction (even if you only got it at dances and other school events)).
Looking over the options pulled up, you scoff. “This is shockingly easy for such a prestigious school,” you murmur.
“Perhaps you are just more gifted than them, [Name].”
You coo, “always my biggest fan, K.” You close the laptop, not before transferring Karen into an earbud formed from your suits nanites. “I think I got this in the bag.”
The bells on the cafe’s door ring as you enter. “Hey, cutie,” you flirt at your manager, a woman with 3 kids and a husband (but damn if she isn’t fine).
[Name],” they greet dryly. They put the spoon they’re cleaning down. “Sam’s gonna be late, some lunatic died on the tracks and their ride’s been delayed.”
You hum, having gotten used to Gothamites and their disregard for the weird shit that happens in their city. “What an asshole.”
The morning passes slowly. You spot some stressed folks hunched over their laptops and an old red-head guy reading through the morning paper. The door chimes, signaling somebody’s entrance.
“Welcome to Carrie’s, what can I get you?” You drone, not looking up from the game of Crossy Road you’re definitely not supposed to be playing while on shift.
“Just a small vanilla latte, please.”
You hum, typing it up. “And a name for that?” you question, grabbing the small cup. The young man has wind-swept black hair. He’s got big ole blue eyes, the type that remind you of childhood innocence. His stature is casual and unassuming, but you can see the strength he hides under that big sweater he wears. He almost reminds you of–
“Jon,” he smiles kindly.
Jonathan motherfucking Kent goddammit.
You muster every ounce of will you have to prevent your heart from speeding up, lest he hear it. You scribble his name with tactically careful hands. “It’ll be right out, sir.”
Jon huffs goodnaturedly, waving his hand. “Please, you don’t gotta call me sir. Jon is fine, if you’re comfortable.”
You smile, “sure thing, Jon,” and let your eyes widen when you turn around to pass the order to Sam. They look at you odd when you hand them the cup, but make it without a fuss. They’re weirdly good at seeing through people. “Is he real cute or something?” They ask.
You’re not sure if Jon always uses his super hearing. You imagine he doesn’t out of respect and not wanting to intrude, but you know he’s probably always got an ear out for trouble. Even so, you’ll be caught dead before he has the chance to hear you geek over him.
“Mid,” you scoff, like a liar.
Stupid spidey luck, you swear. Maybe this universe is sentient and is out to get you for real. Jon Kent is, by all means, a cute nerd, but he’s also Superboy . With super strength and laser eyes. Maybe you should, like, break into LexCorp or something. Having kryptonite on hand doesn’t sound like a bad idea.
But maybe you’re just getting ahead of yourself. You take a deep breath, relax , you. You’ve got training from the goddamn Avengers . You got this in the bag! No need to jump the gun.
Sam takes the order to the front and calls out, “Small vanilla latte for Jon?” Said Jon walks up to the counter, taking the cup and his eyebrows slightly quirk up. Your super hearing picks up his mutter of, “spelled it right…” as he walks off.
“Nervous for the exam?” Sam hums, messing with your earlobe.
“Nah,” you scoff. “It looks like real easy stuff.” You’re more worried about the kind of kids that go there. You’re not foolish enough to think that everybody will be welcoming to a scholarship kid. You’re just thankful you can afford to not look like you’re living on the streets, ‘cause you’re sure at that point you’ll get bullied relentlessly. Nevertheless, your feelings aren’t so easily hurt.
Sam points a finger at you. “Don’t let nobody bully you, those good-for-nothing rich kids wouldn’t last a day out there in the real world. They probably wouldn’t have gotten in without their parents' money anyway.” They grab your shoulders, looking you in the eye. You raise your brows. “I’ll never forget that you did my college level algebra work for me. Seriously, I’ll start paying you to do my work.”
You take their hands. “It’s not a good idea to cheat through college when you’re trying to be a Vet. Probably.”
“I’m saying that you’re way smarter than those losers. They got nothing on you, babes.”
You smile, winking. “I know.” Their smile is sharp. “What’s your beef with the rich anyway? Besides the fact that they’re cheating at life.” You ignore the fact that you technically were rich, in this life and the last.
“Until Bruce Wayne pays my tuition, rich people are useless. All of ‘em.”
Carrie lets you off early to take your exam, and you’re sent off with encouragement all around. Karen guides you along the way, speaking into your ear. Humming a song under your breath, you almost miss the hand reaching out to grab you. You grip the offender’s wrist and whirl around to face them.
It’s Jon. He’s looking at you with wide-eyes.
You furrow your brows. “The fuck, man? Don’t go grabbing people in Gotham.”
His eyes widen even further, hastily removing his grip around your arm. “I’m sorry! I’m really sorry. I just heard you talking about the entrance exams. For GA right? I know the way, I can show you.”
You look him up and down. “You were listening to my conversation? How? You were, like, across the cafe.”
He sputters. “I didn’t mean to, I swear! I just thought I could…” he hesitates, now realizing how weird this is, “...help. And I have really good hearing. Normally good, anyway.”
You stare at him. How is this absolute loser (loving) Superboy? You chuckle. “You’re definitely not from Gotham, are you?”
He relaxes at your smile. “No, is it obvious?”
“Very.” You hook your arm around his. “Lead the way, hero.”
His face flushes, but ever the gentlemen, he doesn’t shove you off. He actually seems to lean into your touch. “So,” you tut as the two of you begin walking, “where are you from, then?”
“Metropolis. I grew up in Smallville for a while though, know it?”
“Kansas, right?” He nods.
“So, was it my dashing good looks that called your name or a biological need to mate?”
He chokes on nothing. “I mean, normal people don’t approach like you did. I know you’ve never seen a beauty like me, but seriously, this whole thing is kinda creepy,” you hum.
He kind of just stares at you. You stare back, and he breaks and chuckles breathily. “I mean, you are pretty cute,” he flirts. Your brows raise in surprise, smiling pleasantly in surprise. “I don’t know, I just like helping people. I’ve always felt the need to do so.” He trails off in thought. “It’s just… who I am.”
It’s fascinating to see the very essence of Superboy in the flesh. You cough and turn your head away. “Pretty corny, if you ask me. But…” you turn back and look at him. “I get it. I like helping the little guys myself.”
“Little guys?”
“Little guys.”
You stop upon the gates of the school, looming above you dauntingly. You turn to face Jon. “How do I look?” He gives you a scrutinizing look before motioning for you to do a spin. You’re wearing a simple hoodie and sweats with slightly beat-up sneakers. Your clothes don’t have to impress anyone, just your score. He thinks seriously, before nodding.
“Looks good to me.”
You chuckle, walking towards the entrance. “See you around, hero.”
“Your heart is racing, [Name].”
“How about we stop talking for a while.”
He watches you walk off. His eyes watch the sway of your hips before he shakes himself out of it. Then, he groans.
“I forgot to get their name.”

The room is cold and only filled with a few students. Their faces are nervous, and if they aren’t, their demeanor is. They’re obviously middle or lower-class kids. You root for them in your head. They’re also in nicer clothes than you are, whoops.
Like you thought, the test is super easy. You finish it far before anyone else, and sit in silence as the clock ticks. You flick the pencil in your hand around, twirling it. Sooner or later, you’ll have to start finding a way back home. You regret not paying attention when Miguel explained things to you. There’s also that whole particle accelerator thing. You sincerely doubt you’ll be able to build something like that yourself. You don’t have access to that kind of money or material, so you’ll find a way to build a watch. Hobie did it, why can’t you?
“Time’s up.”
You blink. The test proctor makes her way around the room, picking up tests as she goes. She gives you a subtle stink-eye when she makes her way to you, and you look her head on. She huffs and makes her way to the front of the room when she’s done.
“You’ll receive a letter of acceptance or denial in a week’s time.” She emphasizes denial and looks straight at you when she does. What a hater.
You walk out the school feeling light. The sky is still cloudy, as it always is. Then, you’re eyes spot a figure waving at you from outside the gate. It’s Jon. What the fu–
You pause in your tracks as he walks up to you.
“So? How’d it go?”
He meets your incredulous stare. “...what?”
“Were you waiting here the whole time?” The test was 2 hours long!
His eyes widened. “No! I went and did some errands. I just came back like five minutes ago.”
You huff in disbelief. “How’d you know when it would be over?”
“My friend has taken it before.” He probably means Damian.
“What’s your name?”
“Not that cute!” You remind him.
He chuckles in disbelief. He’ll find it out.

notes: i didn't plan for jon to kinda be whipped with reader but i couldnt stop my hands. apologies if he's ooc bc i have not read a single dc comic and all my characterization of him comes through fanfics ive read LOL. i imagine he'd be a little flirty once he get's comfortable with his Superboy mantle.
also he's not like immediately in love with reader or anything, he's just being a teenage boy. he'll get a grip eventually. probably.
karen: why does superboy call you babygirl
reader: how about we stop talking for a little while - jon: how did you know who to spell my name without the h? most people spell it 'john'.

The Long Game: Prologue
Paige x Azzi
Summary: Over 15 years into the future, Paige is gearing up to take over as head coach of women's basketball at UConn. She goes on a podcast with a podcaster who very quickly reveals that she is only interested in dragging something--or someone--up from Paige's past😏
This is the beginning of what is intended to be a long series. The plan is for the end of the entire thing to pick up where the prologue leaves off. Chapter 1 flashes all the way back to the beginning. It's already written and coming right up! Please let me know what you think. This is my first fic ever and I'm scaredddd. Thankful for any and all feedback🙏 For more info about the story, read the masterlist.
Word count:
(1271 words)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Prologue: She Was Everything - Paige
"Welcome back, Rach Nation, to 'The Rundown with Rachel.' I'm Rachel, and today we are live with the legend herself, Paige Bueckers, to talk about her new position as the head coach of women's basketball at her alma mater UConn," Rachel says to the camera at an unnecessarily high volume. "Thank you guys for tuning into this special live interview. And Paige, thank you for taking the time to sit down with us today."
Paige has seen 'The Rundown with Rachel,' and she doesn't think much of it. Rachel Olay only covers celebrity gossip and scandals, which is why Paige was skeptical when she reached out to have her on her YouTube channel. She didn't intend to spend her Saturday in front of a camera, but Rachel has a massive following, and Paige's team said it'd be good for the brand. That is the only reason she's here.
She smiles. "Thanks for having me. My nieces are big fans of the show, so I couldn't say no."
"Let's get right into it, shall we?"
Rachel proceeds to launch a barrage of questions about team chemistry, recruiting, championships, and every other topic that was on the list she sent over before Paige came on. Paige practiced her response to each question and perfected the entire interview from start to finish.
They just finished a conversation on Paige's time in the WNBA, so the next topic should be Coach Geno, but Rachel pauses. She looks past the camera to one of her employees. Paige follows her gaze and sees he's walking toward them with a manila folder. She immediately tenses up knowing that there could be nothing good in there.
"Now Paige, I hope you're not too offended by my asking about this, and I don't mean to ambush you, but some rumors are resurfacing about you." Her face says she feels guilty but almost excited to talk about whatever she's about to bring up.
This is an ambush. Paige knew she shouldn't have agreed to do this. Rachel couldn't possibly have anything on her. She's the cleanest athlete in decades. She received media training when she was sixteen.
"A couple of weeks ago, someone posted a photo of you and... someone else," Rachel says dragging out the anticipation and making Paige dig her nails into the palms of her hand. "Have you heard anything about this?"
Paige maintains a straight confused but not worried face. "I can't say that I have, but please, do tell. I'm curious now."
Rachel pulls a piece of paper out of the manila folder and hands it to Paige without revealing it to the audience. Paige grabs it and slowly turns it around to look at it. Her heart drops.
It's a picture of someone she loved harder than anything else in this world. Azzi Fudd.
She manages to maintain a straight face and keep up the confused act. Paige flips the picture around for the camera and shrugs her shoulders. "Azzi Fudd was one of my old teammates. That's not a secret."
Rachel cocks her head and smirks a little bit. "Teammates, Paige? That's so crazy because I thought you guys were more than that way back in the day." Her tone reeks of disingenuousness. Now, Paige is scared.
Once again confused: "Well, yeah. Azzi and I were really great friends through high school and college. Also not a secret."
It hurts to call the love of her life a friend, but she has no choice but to downplay whatever this is as much as possible.
Rachel pulls out another photo from the folder. Paige is quicker to grab it this time. This one is a picture of her and Azzi looking at each other during a press conference after a UConn game. It had to have been taken 15 years ago.
What Paige wouldn't give to sit up there with Azzi again.
She wouldn't give her career. That's the goal. That's always been the goal.
Paige has managed to maintain a straight face once again.
"Oh, c'mon, Paige. You can't deny those looks. You can't tell me you look at all of your 'good friends' that way," Rachel says putting air-quotes around "good friends."
No. Only Azzi. In fact, she has really never looked at any of her other friends at all. Not after she fell for Azzi.
Paige nods and shrugs. "What can I say? We were best friends."
She's praying Rachel is going through all of this to find a friendship and not more. Because this would not be good if this were to get out.
"Friends, Paige?"
Shit.
Rachel pulls out a third photo from the folder and slowly hands it to Paige. She doesn't even want to look at this one. Somehow, she manages to lift her arm and grab the paper from her. Her heart drops again, and this time, her face does too. She looks down in defeat.
The photograph is a screenshot from Ice Brady's Instagram Live back in the day while the 2024 UConn team was out at a bar. Ice's head takes up most of the frame but Paige and Azzi are in the background. They're kissing. Paige remembers this moment.
"Paige, this doesn't look like you're friends."
With what little dignity she has left, she manages to pull together another confused look. "I have to tell you, Rachel, I don't remember this. It must've been some 15 years ago. Again, we were close. It was probably loud in there, and I was trying to talk to her," Paige says as convincingly as possible.
The picture is blurry enough to deny. Azzi's back is to the camera, and you can't see either of their faces, so not the end of the world.
As if she hadn't already been ruined, Rachel opens the folder and quickly passes her a photo. This one is later than the first by about 5 years. It's a little less damning yet still not a good look.
Paige was at a basketball game for some team she can't even remember. Azzi was there too. They were in the tunnel standing really close. Almost nose to nose.
Azzi looked so good in that outfit. Paige couldn't stay away.
She should've.
Before she can react, Rachel hands Paige another picture from the night Paige got drafted. Paige and Azzi were in a tucked away corner no one should have been able to see them in. But someone did. And photographed it perfectly. So now, the few million people on this livestream are about to see what they always wanted. Paige and Azzi kissing like they were the only two in the room.
This one is the nail in Paige's coffin. The picture is undeniable. It's not even blurry. Under different circumstances, Paige would've stared at it for hours. Saved it to her phone. Thinking about what should've been. Paige doesn't see how she can talk her way out of this one. She looks up at Rachel.
"Don't worry, my team is posting these photos in the live stream, so no one is missing anything," Rachel says.
Paige slumps in her chair and places the photos on her lap. She folds her hands and places her elbows on the armrests of the chair. There's nothing left she can say to fix this.
"Paige, I'm sure this is a lot, but you seem... caught. I know the audience is is hoping to put the Pazzi rumors to bed, so tell us once and for all. Who was Azzi Fudd to you?"
Paige looks at the ground and thinks for a second. She has nothing but the truth.
"She was everything."

Strange Love ꨄ︎
word count: 950 (more to come)
p.i | p.ii coming soon
warnings: none, just a bit of story building (however, there will be eventual nsfw in later chapters!!!) also not proofread oops

Class went well, finally finishing up your last class of the day, you felt relief. It was an insanely long week and you couldn’t wait to go—
“One more thing! Final projects are coming up and I have assigned pairs together. I’ll be announcing the names here and if your partner isn’t here, you’ll all be receiving an email about the details.”
You heard some murmuring and frustrations come from fellow classmates and you pursed your lips. It’s been thing after thing the last few weeks and you’re about to go up the wall.
“y/n l/n and Ryuzaki… err I can’t pronounce that, sorry.” You look around and find this ‘Ryuzaki.’ You hear footsteps approaching and you turn to your right, seeing a guy in a plain white long sleeve, some jeans and white sneakers.
“You’re y/n, correct?” You nod. “Good. I’ll send you an email later to get set up with our project.” And he’s gone. He didn’t even give you a chance to answer him. You roll your eyes and begin packing your things. You then realize he didn’t have your email.
You rush out of the lecture hall and look around for him. You see him walking toward a fancy Mercedes Benz. Your eyes widen and then mouth agape to see someone was opening the door for him.
“Wait! Ryuzaki!” The man who was holding the door open for him looks in your direction, then down to Ryuzaki. He looks up to see you rushing toward the car. “Hey, you didn’t have my email so I wrote it down super quick.” You hand it to him and smile, panting a bit.
“Oh, thank you. I guess I do need that.” He didn’t. He already had your email pulled up on his laptop the second the professor said your name. “I’ll be hearing from you! I’ll start on an outline once we get all the information.” You say goodbye to Ryuzaki and then to the man holding the door.
Ryuzaki watched you walk away, admiring your gentle nature.
- - - - - >
You’re laid on the couch, watching whatever the cable had on for the evening as you waited for the professor to send out the email about the assignment.
The news was just constant death. Heart attacks? Random car accidents? It felt unreal. ‘Kira’ was the cause of this. A name you’ve come to know these last few months.
The bright light from the tv illuminated the dark walls of your apartment. You look toward the balcony, the view outside was alright, a simple neighborhood. You had dreamed of a high-rise with a cityscape view. However, this will do. You let out a weak yawn and open your laptop.
You log in and check your inbox and see some new notifications. One from your personal email and one on your school email. You open the school email and see it’s your professors list of students and the rundown of the assignment.
Then, you checked your personal, seeing an email from Ryuzaki. His tone very, very formal and a bit dry;
Greetings y/n,
I’ve just reviewed the email our professor has sent out and wanted to recommend a few things for the outline…
The email was very thorough, he basically just gave you the entire outline idea in the email. You shrug, you didn’t mind it at all. In fact it saved you time to work on other assignments. Your fingers begin clicking on the keyboard.
Hey Ryuzaki!
Thanks for the help on the outline. You didn’t need to provide all that information, but I appreciate it any way. Now once I get this made, when would you like to meet next? I’m relatively free the next couple of days.
Thanks ◡̈
y/n l/n
Though the email was a bit informal compared to his, you didn’t really care. He’s a peer, no need to put in the work when you don’t need to. You’re about to close your laptop until you hear a ding!
It was Ryuzaki.
Good evening,
I’m happy you received my email and liked the outline recommendations. As for meeting, we can either tomorrow for lunch or the following day. If there’s anything else you need, please feel free to call.
(Insert phone number here)
Have a good night :-)
Ryuzaki
You chuckle at the little smiley he left. You search for your white flip-phone and add his number to your contacts. You send him a smiley with your name and he does the same.
Then he calls.
Woah.
You panic. You normally don’t call people and especially someone you don’t know really at all. You suck in air and answer.
“Hello?” It’s quiet for a beat. “Good evening y/n. I apologize for the late call.” You chuckle.
“No, i-it’s okay. I normally don’t get calls nor do I call people.” You hear a hum on the other end and a bit of shuffling.
“What time did you want to meet? Tomorrow or Thursday?” Your eyes widen. Oh yeah, you didn’t answer that. “Oh, uhm. I guess I can tomorrow for lunch.” You stand and walk to your bedroom, looking through your clothes.
“Good. I’ll be getting off the phone now.” His voice is so monotone, though there’s something about it you like. “Okay, have a good night Ryuzaki.” He replies, “You too.” And the line ends.
You smile and then realize you’ve never had a boy call you on the phone before. Jeez, is your life really that boring that a classmate you’re assigned with excites you that much?
“I gotta go to bed.” You scoff and shake your head as you finish getting the rest of your things ready for tomorrow.
- - - - - .
I haven’t wrote a fic (that I’ve posted) in almost 5 years… so if I’m a little washed PLEASE brace. I’ll get better as I go. Also, not completely sure how the app works majority of the time so I’ll eventually add this to a master list. Anyway, enough yapping, I hope you enjoyed and continue to enjoy!!!

☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
The next few weeks consisted of many phone calls, mostly ones asking about where you all went. The clientele seemed to be thrilled that it was just you guys and not the other company hovering over everyone. Thankfully the client that you lost the footage for was completely understanding and you got to refilm the project without much of a hassle. You barely made it into your office before your desk phone rang. You grabbed it and put it against your shoulder smacking it into your glasses in the process and said “Beyond the Lens Studios how can I help you?” you smiled still not quite believing that you had your own studio.
“Hello, is this Y/n?” the woman asked.
“Uh, yes this is Y/n, may I ask who I am speaking with?” you asked curiously as you got your computer booted up to take notes on the call. It was something you all did in a shared excel sheet so you would not lose track of who you had spoken with and what you spoke about.
“Yes, my name is Ji-Yu, I am with KQ Entertainment.” you almost dropped the phone. Holy shit. What in the world would possess them to call you. You knew that they had a few groups but they all had extensive amounts of staff that did what you did.
“Hello Ji-Yu, what is it I can help you with today?” you inquired, attempting and almost failing to keep your voice level. Your hands started to shake while you were typing out the notes.
“We are looking for a new team to join our company, our most recent videographer team has left for a bigger opportunity and we were wondering if your company would be willing to work with one of our groups?”
Your thoughts raced. You knew about KQ and just so happened to love all of the groups under them, specifically Ateez. It had been Aurora’s fault you got into them in the first place. She was listening to them while you were in the car on a several hour drive to a filming location. Once you showed even a minute amount of interest she started spewing all of the information she could think of. She had been an Atiny since shortly after they debuted. After doing your own research and listening they became your solace. They have saved you on multiple accounts, yet they don't even know you.
“You're looking to hire our company? Like, all four of us?” It was very rare for people wanting to hire everyone there seeing as everyone had their own clients. Generally at the most it was two of you.
“Yes, we have seen a lot of your work and you have come highly recommended by several of our contacts. We would be interested in discussing starting a contract with you and your team if you would have us.“
Holy fuck you thought, you pinched yourself to make sure what was happening was real. That fucking hurt. It's real!
“Thank you, while I would love to set up something with you I have to speak to my team first to see if it would be something they would be interested in. Before I do so could I have more details so I can give them a rundown and call you back with an answer?”
“Yes, that would work. You would be working with our group Ateez as their Logbook videographers. You would be traveling with them all over the world and be filming in our offices as well. If that works out, we would love to have you not only as their Logbook videographers but as their full time photographers as well. We have seen all of your photography and it suits their style well.”
Your jaw dropped. You had never expected such a large offer. This was most definitely a huge step to take. It offers opportunities to travel like you have always wanted. Not to mention, you knew these men and their temperament from the little pieces you have seen in their Logbooks.
After just a moment's hesitation to absorb the information you sank back into professional mode. “Thank you for the information, I will speak with my team and see if it is something they would be interested in. I will give you a call by the end of the week with our answer.”
“Thank you Y/n I look forward to hearing from you, have a wonderful day.”
“Thank you, you do the same.” You hung up the phone and made sure the call had ended before letting out a squeal. You leapt up out of your chair and jumped around your office. You decided to take a lap around the top floor of the studio with your restless energy. You were leaping around in celebration all the way around the space, thankfully it was just a large loop. The ruckus must have caught the attention of your teammates because it wasn’t even 30 seconds later that they tapped on the glass of your door that was propped open slightly from your re-entrance. Their eyebrows were raised in suspicion thinking you had finally lost it from all of the energy drinks you had.
“Get your asses in here. We have some important and exciting business to discuss.” You said after you stopped jumping and adjusted your glasses, going back to being serious but the wide smile gave you away. They all pushed into your office and sat on the small couch facing your desk. Once all of them were seated Aurora said “okay spill it, you don’t get that excited for just anything.”
You smiled wider at her but hesitated, putting together jumbled thoughts that had string theory to connect them was difficult. You finally came up with a real sentence. “I just got off the phone with a very large prospective client. They called stating they are wanting to hire all of us for a large project, if you can even call it that. It would be us contracted into their company until I assume something changes. It is a very big opportunity.” You started.
They all looked at each other and back at you. You could see the curiousness in their gazes. You were never vague, always giving the smallest of details even if they did not ask for it. They could read you like a book and knew this was something that you were still trying to wrap your head around. You took a second to collect your thoughts further and started again, “It was KQ Entertainment.” You took a deep breath, “and they would like to hire us as Ateez’s Logbook videographers because the people that worked for them just left. They would like for us to travel with them and if that goes well we could also become their full time photographers and videographers.”
Aurora’s eyes widened her jaw going slack. She leapt up from the middle of the other two, effectively startling them with the suddenness. She grabbed your shoulders, and started jumping around with you. You reached over and grabbed hers while you both squealed at the opportunity that was just presented to you. The other two sat there in shock at the offer, they had never expected anyone of KQ’s status to even notice their little company. They both got up shortly after and started jumping with you and Aurora. Your little company was just getting started and it had already been noticed by one of the top companies around. Once you tired yourselves out you flopped onto your chair, they flopped onto the couch in a heap.
“So, after that reaction from all of us, I can assume I know the answer, but I would like to hear a definite answer from all of you,” You express to the three sitting in front of you.
“Yes, 100% yes!” Aurora practically squeals. Forrest looks at her and rolls his eyes.
“It's a great opportunity, I say yes.” Willow voices glancing at the two beside her. She was always the calm one out of the three of them.
“I agree, I am here for you guys, the traveling, and the great opportunity.” Forrest claims.
“Okay, while I would like to call them right now and give them their answer, I do not want to seem too eager. I also think we all need to sleep on it and come back to it. While I know how huge this is for us we still need to consider all of our avenues especially since we are going to be traveling for long periods of time. I know that you have your people you need to speak to to figure out smaller details. I personally will be speaking to my mother about taking care of the furry babies while we are gone.” you think to the three gentle giants at home, Mocha, Beans, and Toothless, your Maine Coons. They are your children. “We also need to go through storage to make sure we have enough things for all of us to be traveling. If we need to we can buy some more supplies for having all of us out on the field. I know we will need at least one other body vest and gimbal. In fact, let's make a checklist for everything that each of us will need.” You note.
“I agree on all fronts, while I would love to jump into this opportunity, we need to prepare our family and ourselves for such a big task.” Willow replies. You knew she was going to have to discuss this with her husband, Rowan. He was an honorary member of Beyond the Lens, he came up to the office often enough you jokingly offered him an office. He knew the basics of what all of you did and was a great help when none of you had the hands to do the things you needed to. It might even be smart to see if he could tag along, he does remote work anyway.
“You know you could see if Rowan could come with us, he would be a good help for when all of us have our hands full.” Aurora stated, you and Forrest nodded, she seemed to already be pondering that idea. That would be something you could iron out later.
“Okay,” you clapped your hands and stood up, “let's get moving and we can get together later. That will give you guys time to get whatever you were doing finished”
You got together later on in the morning and compiled a list of all of the things you would need for traveling. Once you were satisfied with the list Willow went to order the things you would need. These would be things that, even if you guys did not accept the offer, would be useful to have in the future. The rest of the day followed in a blur. You went home excited and did a lot of thinking. As soon as your head hit the pillow, exhaustion pulled you into fitful slumber.

Dead Girl Walkin'#2
Pairing: Daryl Dixon x Female! Reader
Warnings: sickness, usual the walking dead themes
Word count: 1k+
A/n: Let's get into those flashbacks! Hope you enjoy it!
Main Masterlist || Daryl Dixon Masterlist
PREVIOUS CHAPTER || NEXT CHAPTER
Your sickness got worse. So much worse.
And you were all alone with it—until Daryl and Merle showed up.
At first, Daryl didn’t know why Merle bothered. He wasn’t the kind of guy to play nursemaid, and he sure as hell wasn’t the type to stick around when things got tough. But for some reason, he kept dragging Daryl back to that rundown trailer in the middle of nowhere, like it was just another stop on their endless list of bad decisions.
Being there for you was probably the best decision the two of them had ever made.
But it wasn’t.
And you let them in—not just into your house but into your life and heart.
Daryl didn’t get that either. You should’ve known better, should’ve realized they would only bring trouble and heartbreak. It never ended well with him and Merle around. Then again, Daryl figured you didn’t have much left to lose anyway.
You were getting worse by the day, skin paler than it had any right to be, bones jutting out where they hadn’t before. Every time he saw you, it was like looking at a ghost that hadn’t figured out it was dead yet.
And still, you smiled.
Even now, coughing up blood into a tissue, you grinned at them from your spot on the couch like it was just another Tuesday.
“At this point, the Grim Reaper must be scared of me,” you wheezed, wiping your mouth with the back of your hand. “Just doesn’t wanna show the fuck up.”
Merle let out one of those wild, barking laughs of his, shaking his head. “Shit, girl, I don’t blame him. You’re stubborn as hell.”
“Damn right.” You stretched, wincing, but you didn’t let it show too much. “I oughta start charging him rent if he’s just gonna keep circling and never really move in.”
Daryl didn’t laugh. He just stood there, arms crossed, watching you like you might disappear between one breath and the next.
Because you might.
Merle, either oblivious or just refusing to acknowledge reality, sprawled out in the recliner across from you, kicking his boots up on the coffee table. “So, what? You gonna outlive all of us just to spite that bony bastard?”
“That’s the plan.”
You and Merle grinned at each other like it was all some big joke.
Daryl didn’t think it was funny.
You were wrapped in that same old blanket you always had, the one with holes in it, the one you swore was perfectly fine even though Daryl had half a mind to steal it and replace it with something that wasn’t falling apart.
That night, when Merle was outside smoking and talking shit on the phone to some guy Daryl didn’t care about, he sat on the couch beside you. Not too close—just close enough to remind himself you were still here.
Your hands trembled when you reached for the glass of water on the coffee table. Daryl saw it before you could pretend otherwise and handed it to you instead.
You nodded in thanks, taking a slow sip before leaning your head back against the couch. “You’re quiet tonight.”
Daryl huffed, staring at a crack in the wall. “Ain’t got nothin’ to say.”
“Yeah, you do.”
He glanced at you, scowling. “No, I don’t.”
You smirked like you knew some big secret. “You get all quiet when you’re mad about something.”
Daryl looked away. He didn’t want to admit you were right. Didn’t want to admit that his heart skipped a beat because you noticed that little fact about him.
You sighed, running your fingers over the rim of the glass. “You don’t gotta be mad for me, y’know.”
He clenched his jaw. “Ain’t mad.”
You gave him a look, all sharp and knowing. “Bullshit.”
Daryl inhaled through his nose, tapping his fingers against his knee. His hands felt restless, like they should be doing something—fixing something, fighting something. But there wasn’t shit to fight. Nothing he could win anyway.
“I don’t like seein’ you like this.” The words came out rougher than he meant, but they were the truth.
You exhaled slowly. “I know.”
“Feels like…” He trailed off, frowning.
“Like what?”
Daryl shook his head, restless energy thrumming under his skin. “Like you’re just sittin’ here waitin’ to die.”
You didn’t look surprised by that. Maybe you’d already thought the same thing yourself. Maybe you’d been thinking it longer than he had.
After a long pause, you said, “I don’t think I’m waiting to die. I think I’m just trying to live while I still can.”
Daryl swallowed hard, shifting in his seat. “That ain’t much better.”
You shrugged. “It’s all I got.”
And maybe that was what pissed him off the most.
That you’d accepted it. That you weren’t fighting. That you were making jokes about the damn Grim Reaper instead of doing something.
He knew it wasn’t fair. Knew this wasn’t something you could punch your way out of. But that didn’t stop the anger from curling hot and sharp in his chest.
Didn’t stop him from wanting to do something.
You must’ve seen it written all over his face because you sighed and nudged his arm with your knee. “C’mere, Dixon.”
He frowned. “For what?”
You patted the couch beside you. “Just come here.”
Daryl hesitated, then shifted closer. You tugged the edge of your blanket over his lap and leaned your head against his shoulder like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Daryl froze, shoulders tense. “The hell you doin’?”
“Relax, would you?” You sighed, closing your eyes. “You feel like a damn rock.”
He let out a breath through his nose but didn’t move away.
“You ever just let yourself be still?” you murmured.
He didn’t answer.
You hummed, like you already knew. “You should try it sometime.”
Daryl stayed stiff for a long moment before slowly letting himself relax.
Just a little.
Your breathing was steady, soft—like maybe, for the first time in a while, you weren’t in pain. Like his presence was better than any painkiller you’d ever taken.
And for the first time in a while, Daryl let himself believe—for just a second—that maybe you’d still be here tomorrow.
If not for yourself, then for him.

A Love Connection Part 5
Hey, guys! You really seem to be loving this story! Yay. This is the first of two today as the next chapter will be posted later tonight.
Just a heads up Billy's introduction is very indicative of his attitude throughout the whole thing.
@tartarusknight 's tags made me laugh because how spot on their assessment of the three Suitors was.
In this we get a feel for each of the contestants and Steve is already done with this shit. I won't put a warning up here, but this does have a lot of more adult themed questions for a dating show. Mainly because I figure it's on a streaming service.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
~
“All righty!” Bob said with a bright smile. “We have three rounds in which our lovely Suitors will earn points and two of our Suitors will get a chance to win a date with our Catch! The first round is the all around where our Suitors will each have a chance to answer a question from our Catch. The one with best answer will get three points, second place will get two, and the last place will get only one.”
The audience clapped and cheered.
“The second round is our lightning round. Our Catch will ask either or question that the Suitors will have to answer quickly. For each answer that matches our Catch they’ll receive a tally. The one with the most tallies will get five points, the second will get three, and last place will get one.”
The audience again clapped and cheered.
“Then in the heart to heart round, our Catch will get to ask each contestant five questions and then will rate the answer from one to three. A one will get our Suitor three points, a two will get you two points and three, only one.”
The audience again clapped and cheered.
“And now our lightning round!”
Steve was told to just call out all the either or questions he felt spoke to him as they handed him a list of the thirty plus.
He called Dustin’s first. “Star Wars or Star Trek.”
All three picked Star Wars. And all three got a tally.
He just started calling out the ones as he saw them on the page.
“Silver or gold.”
“Cat or dog.”
That one had been a bit divisive considering Steve owned a cat and of the three only Tommy was a cat person. Bob winced at that one. “Ooh. That one hurts.”
Steve could only agree.
“Bondage or blindfold.”
“For me or you?” Billy asked before answering.
“All the questions are for the Suitor, not the Catch,” Bob explained. “You are trying to match with your Catch. But in this case it would what you want to do with the Catch whether you were the one it being done to or not.”
No one was surprised when Billy picked bondage. Tommy did, too. Eddie being the only one to get a tally for that one for the blindfold.
“Camping or the beach.”
Again only Eddie got a tally on that one. Steve lived in Indiana where there weren’t a lot of sandy beaches but lots of great places to go camping.
“Give or receive a blowjob.”
Eddie snorted and Steve could almost imagine a little smirk on his face. All three preferred receiving and so none of them got a tally.
Bob laughed. “I think that’s actually a good thing. Stevie here can give his final Suitor the best bj after all this.”
Steve was again grateful for the Suitors not being able to see his face as he blushed a dark red.
“Vampires or werewolves.”
Only Billy got a tally for that one as Tommy and Eddie both picked vampires.
The game continued until finally Steve called out his last either or question: “Taylor Swift or Beyonce.”
Eddie snorted again. “Billie Eilish. But if I have to pick a billionaire, definitely Taylor Swift.”
The audience laughed.
Steve laughed, too and happily gave Eddie the only tally as the other two picked Beyonce for Chrissy’s question.
The final rundown of points after everything was added up, Tommy with five points for having the most tallies, Eddie with three for coming in second, and Billy with only one. Tommy barely beating Eddie by two tallies.
~
They took a lunch break after they filmed that and Steve was whisked off to a dressing room where a nice girl named Vickie brought him all his food and two bottles of water to sooth his throat after talking so much.
Steve was a little bit more nervous about this portion of the game. The questions would start fun and go deeper or in some cases spicier.
“Everyone knows the first question,” Bob said as if they didn’t just spend two grueling hours answering either or questions.
“What would be your ideal first date?” the audience roared.
“Damn straight!” Bob said. “Or in this case, damn gay!”
The audience laughed, but Steve squirmed in his seat.
“I would drive up your place in my shiny red 1969 Camero,” Billy said, low and seductive. “Then I would take you to a five star restaurant and order the most expensive wine. Then I would take you to my hotel room and fuck you into the mattress until our neighbors call in a noise complaint.”
“Oooh,” Bob said, “already starting off hot.”
“I would take you to my private jet,” Tommy answered, “and wine and dine all the way to Paris where we would have breakfast on the balcony of a French villa and make love as the sun rises on Paris.”
“Fancy and romantic,” Bob said with a saucy wink at the camera.
“For a first date?” Eddie mused. “I’d find out all your favorite foods and drinks from your best friend and then we’d go on a picnic complete with a blanket and a six pack of your favorite beer. Then we’d go miniature golfing and then your favorite diner for dinner where we share an old fashioned milk shake. Then I would walk you to your door where I would hope for a goodbye kiss.”
Steve’s jaw dropped. He had never heard such a perfect date in his life. Even Bob was speechless. He just kept glancing at Steve and the camera just back and forth as everyone was stunned by the answer.
“I think we all know who’s getting the three points for this question,” Bob finally said. “Steve tell us who came in second and last place please.”
“Billy in second,” Steve said, “and Tommy in third. I’ve been to Paris, whatever it was when it was named the city of love, it certainly isn’t now.”
Again Eddie snorted and Steve was starting to think he had the same sense of humor as him.
“What is your favorite sports team?” Steve asked Lucas’s question.
“LA Lakers,” was Billy’s reply.
While Tommy said, “Chicago Bulls.”
Steve face fell. He didn’t like either of those teams.
“I’m not much of a sports fan,” Eddie admitted, “but my favorite thing to do growing up was watching the Hoosiers with my Uncle Wayne, because I got to spend time just him and me. So I’m going to say Hoosiers.”
The audience went ‘awww.’
Steve choked up. “That was a beautiful answer, Eddie. The Hoosiers are my favorite team, too. Three points to you. Two to Tommy, and one to Billy.”
Billy grumbled something his mic didn’t quite catch.
“What’s your favorite pick up line?” was Steve’s next question. This one was Robin’s question. She thought it would get some cheesy answers.
“I’m Billy.”
Bob snorted, but wisely said nothing. The audience however seemed to agree with Billy.
“I have a private jet, just say the word and we can be in Paris by breakfast.”
Bob blinked for a moment. “Does that really work?”
“Oh yeah.”
Steve shivered at Tommy’s smarmy tone.
“This must be a museum,” Eddie said into the resulting awkward silence, “because baby, you’re a work of art.”
Steve laughed. There was the cheesy answer he had been expecting. But the top points ended up going to Billy for the sheer balls of that one. Eddie did come in second though.
He went through a few boring questions like favorite book or quote to go with some of the spicier questions.
Then he asked his last question of day one.
“Do you consider yourself a good person?”
All three men are shocked into a stunned silence.
“That’s one hell of a question, boys,” Bob said, “how about it?”
Eddie actually being the first to speak.
“I try to be,” he murmured close to his microphone, “but without a doubt I wish I was better than I am.”
Tommy laughed and quoted ‘Firefly’ complete with him saying stab between each downgrade.
Steve chuckled a bit at that one.
Billy scoffed. “I’m no philosopher, I don’t get into shit like that. But yeah, I’m good person. Fuck you.”
Steve gave Tommy the top points on that one, with Eddie again coming second. Billy was not happy with coming in third. Again.
The director called cut and Bob said, “Ooh. We can’t have you saying the eff word, but I’m not sure if they’ll bleep it or cut it.”
“Whatever.”
Now Steve was absolutely eaten up with curiosity about what these dudes looked like.
He would find out soon enough.
~
After eating at the hotel restaurant, Steve went back to the hotel and called Robin.
“Hey, Robbie,” he murmured, flopping on to the bed.
“Hey, dingus,” she said softly. “I’ve Chrissy here with me, so I’m going to put you on speaker.”
“Hi, Stevie,” Chrissy cooed. “You have any idea who are going to be the final two yet?”
“Oh yeah,” Steve huffed, playing with the tassels on the decorative pillow. “Because unless Suitor number one gets his head out of his ass, it’s bye bye birdie. Dude is so full of himself and only interested in how much sex he can get. I’m really dreading the final round when I have to start asking personal questions for each one.”
“Why’s that?” Robin asked. “Or can’t you tell us with all the NDA crap.”
“NDA crap,” Steve said, resigned. “But I can say that Suitor number three is the one I hope gets at least to the dating portion. His answers were so cute. He sounds like an absolute dork.”
“Perfect for you then,” Chrissy agreed. “Tell us about everything else. The hotel, dinner, the clothes you got to wear.”
So Steve did and by the time they had worn out every topic it was late. They all needed to be up early the next morning so they said good night.
Steve got ready for bed.
He slept fitfully, dreaming of three large shadows looming over him and laughing as he fell into the abyss.
~
The hair and makeup lady certainly had her work cut out for her when Steve arrived that morning. She gave his shoulder a quick squeeze.
“Everyone sleeps badly on filming days,” she assured him. “It’s all the anxiety. You aren’t making my job harder by having not slept, okay?”
Steve nodded and let her do her work. By the time she was done, he looked exactly the same as he did yesterday.
He was impressed and told him so.
“You’re sweet, sugar,” she murmured. “Now, go knock ‘em dead!”
Steve got into his little booth and sat down.
“You ready for day two?” Bob asked, stroking his tie like he had the day before.
He shook his head.
Bob laughed and counted down with his fingers, three, two, one!
The first question on his little cue card read: “What would you do if someone important to me called while we were in the middle of sex?”
“I’d hit the text me button and toss the phone on the laundry pile,” Billy said. “Whatever it is, it can wait.”
Tommy chuckled. “I would answer it for you and tell them that unless this was an emergency, my dick up your ass is slightly more important and then hang up. If it’s important, they’ll call back.”
Bob and Steve shared wide-eyed expressions over that one.
“I’d let you answer it,” Eddie said softly. “Your people are important to you. I would hope, however, that you would chose to continue to go back to doing what we were doing if it wasn’t essential right then, though.”
“Fair enough,” Steve said with a huff a laughter. “Three points to Eddie, two to Billy, and one to Tommy.”
There was a little murmuring of surprise from the audience on that one. But Steve felt that Billy’s wasn’t as rude as Tommy’s was. Telling them to text wasn’t as bad as being lewd about it.
That would be the last time that happened, much to Steve’s dismay.
When asked about what they wore to bed, Billy said he was naked, Tommy said that he wore a silken matching set of pajamas with matching eye mask. Eddie said that he wore an old band t-shirt and Garfield pajama pants. Steve immediately was endeared. Billy also came in second place on that one.
When asked about their favorite act of foreplay, Billy didn’t do foreplay, Tommy was all for getting blown, and Eddie’s was even sweeter than the last. He said he enjoyed stripping his partner and kiss every inch of newly exposed skin.
The audience was starting to get excited as Billy began to pull into a dead heat with Tommy, though Eddie was clearly in the lead.
Then came time for the final question of round one. God that felt weird to say considering they had already done round two.
“What would you do if the house we recently moved into,” Steve said, leaning forward to the microphone, “and I believed it was legitimately haunted and was scared?”
This was Will’s question and he loved it. It really spoke volumes about a person.
“I’d buy you a new house, baby,” Billy said. “You think it’s haunted, then fuck let’s get the hell out of there.”
Steve was little surprised on that one. He would have thought that Billy would have been the one to tell him that it was all in his head.
The audience clapped in appreciation, too.
“I’d hire a priest to bless the house,” Tommy said, “before anything else. We just bought it, I wouldn’t want to give up a new investment so easily.”
“Uh...” Eddie said sheepishly. “I’ve always wanted a haunted house. And like it would suck, because you were scared and shit, but it would be so cool to live in haunted house. So I’d try to make friends with so it would stop being mean to you.”
That was the sweetest dorkiest thing Steve had ever heard, but it was also the most insensitive of the bunch and no one was surprised when Billy and Tommy were one and two respectively.
Bob smiled. “Can’t win them all, Eddie. You’ve been batting a thousand this round.” He turned to the audience. “Eddie got forty points that round, with Tommy and Billy almost at a dead heat with twenty-five each.”
“So with the totals of the two rounds, Eddie is in the lead at forty-five points, Tommy at twenty-eight, and Billy at twenty-six. But the next round is anybody’s game. Each Suitor will be asked one question and based on how well our lovely Catch Steve likes the answer they can get anywhere from one to three points. Get ready for the final round!”
They broke for lunch like they did yesterday and Steve was exhausted. He was almost too tired to eat, but he forced himself to eat and drink, for the energy if nothing else. He certainly was going to need it.
He buried his head in hands. He wasn’t sure if it was going to be worth it in the end. He was so worn out. He could only hope the Suitors were as tired as he was. He didn’t even know if they got to go out and enjoy the city while he was stuck in his hotel room every night.
He let the makeup lady retouch his makeup and he put on his best parent teacher conference face and stepped back out onto the stage.

The Serpent's Paramour - Sebastian Sallow x Female!Reader
Summary: For the past five years, you've been traversing the Highlands in pursuit of ancient magic sites to master the all-consuming power from the repository. In the midst of your travels, you find yourself forced into an uneasy alliance with none other than Sebastian Sallow. He wants your help, but you want absolutely nothing to do with him.
At first, that is.
While the two of you learn to coexist in the same space again, you’re left wondering if you truly will be able to aid one another, or if your past mistakes will finally come to head after all these years and ultimately lead to your long awaited downfall.
Word Count: 3k
Warnings: 18+. aged up characters, canon-typical violence, kidnapping
Chapter 1 can also be found here on Ao3
You were getting really tired of running for your life.
During your fifth-year turning tail and booking it was often heavily warranted, especially because it was usually being done as a result of you waking up hordes of Inferi, or stealing important artifacts from dark wizards that would then be out for blood. You liked to think you had grown out of that habit, but tonight was proving to be something of a trip down memory lane.
You were being chased. Again.
Tucking your knees to your chest, you ducked down and rolled through mud at the same time a Bombarda curse blew up a chunk of the tree ahead of you. It was a close call, but you could hardly stop to survey the extent of the damage when you could still hear the thugs behind you giving chase.
“You daft idiots, grab her!”
Another spell struck the ground where you’d landed moments before, but you were already on the move– dipping and weaving in a bid to dodge the attacks that were fired blindly at your back. It made no sense; you had never been intercepted at an ancient magic site before, and as far as you were concerned, there was no reason for anyone to take interest in a dilapidated ruin. Aside from using the crumbling fortress as a makeshift base, no Ashwinders or poachers had ever been lying in wait in what was otherwise deemed an unremarkable location.
They had been this time, though. To make matters worse, they were looking for you specifically.
Your name had been like a battle cry from their lips as you’d exited the rundown site, and you hadn’t bothered to stick around to find out whatever the hell it was they wanted with you. If you weren’t so tired and weary, you would have apparated yourself to safety in a heartbeat, but splinching yourself as a result of your carelessness wasn’t exactly at the top of your to-do list. So, you had bolted straight for the edge of the forest, doing your best to avoid colliding with the low hanging branches that scratched at your cheeks and ripped at your cloak.
There was more yelling from behind you, only this time it sounded distinctly farther away. Chancing a look over your shoulder, you discovered that there was now ample distance between you and the goons chasing you, and you pivoted on your heels to head north for the river that separated the Clagmar Coast from Cragcroftshire. If you could reach the water, you would have a better chance of getting away and concealing your tracks in the process.
At least, you hoped you would.
Lungs aching, you pushed yourself harder, your arms pumping at your sides as you lept over a fallen log in your path, and though you stumbled a bit upon landing, you remained upright and pressed on. Another spell whizzed past your head– the heat from the Confringo curse nearly singing your matted hair– but you ignored it and focused wholly on running. It felt like an eternity had passed when you finally reached the colossal ravine, immediately trying to formulate a plan that would result in you on the other side with your pursuers left behind. There was no bridge to repair, no loose boulders to form into a levitating staircase, nothing. Panic began to fester in your mind for a heartbeat before you steeled your nerves and banished the feeling entirely. Hysteria wouldn’t help you right now– it never had.
“There– up ahead! Move your asses, dammit,” came the same voice from before. You turned to watch as a handful of masked assailants slid down the muddy embankment roughly fifty feet from you, and that sight alone spurred you into action.
Your wand was ripped from the holster on your thigh, and you channeled every bit of magic in your body into it as you aimed for the largest tree across the daunting trench in front of you. The Accio charm wrapped around the top of the monstrous trunk, and with every ounce of strength you possessed, you pulled. It seemed impossible at first, but desperate times called for desperate measures, and the foreign power from the repository surged to life to give you the assistance you gravely needed. There was a deafening crack as the wood began to splinter and give way under your ministrations, muting the onslaught of footsteps that grew nearer and nearer. With one final pull your efforts were rewarded, and the massive evergreen tipped towards you slowly before gravity caught up to it, sending it plummeting towards where you stood.
If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? It was a philosophical question– one that you had never thought about much before– but you had always assumed that with no one around, there would never be any way to know. Presently there were multiple people around, and as it turned out, a falling tree did make a sound.
As you dove out of the way, the pine covered top of the tree arched past where you had been standing, stretching over the shrinking space between you and the encroaching strangers behind you. Most of them saw the gargantuan tree heading straight for them and jumped out of the way, their shrill screams echoing throughout the forest and bringing a small smile to your face. A few others weren’t so lucky, and you watched as the peaked top of the tree swallowed them whole and buried them beneath a heavy thicket of pine needles.
Seizing your opportunity, you ran for the makeshift bridge and hauled yourself on top of the rough trunk, shoving and kicking at the spindly branches that stood in your way as you practically clawed your way through to the other side of the ravine. You didn’t dare look back, keeping your eyes trained ahead as you focused on maintaining your footing and not getting thrown off balance by your satchel.
It looked like a hurricane had torn through the earth when you finally emerged at the base of the tree. You hopped down and landed in the deep, root-riddled crater that had previously held the evergreen upright before running to the side to gauge where your attackers were. Most were still gathering their bearings while others attempted to drag their comrades out from under the suffocating weight of the branches. You hardly spared their survival a second thought as you pointed your wand at the center of the tree and cast, “Confringo!”
The flames grew rapidly and without mercy, frantic calls of “hurry” and “get them out of there” reaching your ears as you spun towards the forest and disappeared into the treeline. There was no knowing how much time you had bought yourself, but you weren’t about to squander any of it for a second.
You ran, and you did not look back.
***
One would assume that after two years of living in abandoned hovels and scrounging up scraps to eat with your bare hands, you’d be used to being cold, wet, and miserable. Hell, you had learned more about yourself since leaving Hogwarts than you’d ever thought possible, including just how resilient and resourceful you could be. Rain storms, stale bread, and a lack of clean water had never deterred you for long, and through all the trials and tribulations you found yourself facing, you always managed to pull through.
Tonight, however, you allowed yourself to be sullen.
The torrential downpour you’d been caught up in somehow managed to slip through the canopy of trees overhead, and as a result, you were encased in a cold, wet, dreary darkness. It had been two hours of trudging through mud and frigid temperatures, and by now you were caked in a thick layer of grime that you desperately wanted to rid yourself of. Charming away the mess was pointless– it wouldn’t be long before you were covered in muck once again– and you’d learned long ago that using magic while in the middle of a void forest was a bad idea, especially when you were trying to remain undetected.
After the events from earlier in the day, you had decided to head straight for the next site marked on your map to make camp and settle down for the night. However, you were still a day away from reaching the location, no thanks to the dark wizards that had chased you in the opposite direction. Your stubbornness and desire to reach your destination is why you currently found yourself on the outskirts of civilization, trying and failing to fend off the elements to get the journey over with, but the bone-deep chill that wracked your body was beginning to weaken your resolve.
You were exhausted.
Thunder rumbled overhead, long and loud amidst the sound of raindrops pelting against the dirt, and with a disappointed sigh, you made up your mind. If memory served you correctly, the town of Bainburgh was roughly a two mile walk west of the forest. Your paranoia told you it was too risky to set foot in a legitimate establishment, but your numb limbs and wet boots squashed your fears before they could come to head. Staying outside for the entire night would likely leave you dead, and there were few other options to choose from.
So, you marched. It took roughly forty minutes to traverse the jagged, rocky landscape in the dark, slowed down by the stray roots that stuck out of the ground and worked to trip you in your haste. By the time you made it into town, you were soaked to the bone and shivering violently enough that you were certain passersby could hear. The tavern was helpfully the largest building at the end of the road, and you headed straight for it without sparing any of the town’s denizens a second glance.
The warmth that greeted you as soon as you entered was beyond welcoming, and you tugged the door shut behind you before beelining straight for the firepit in the middle of the room. Your hands were so numb that you practically had to submerge them in the flames to feel any semblance of reprieve, and a few onlookers cast wary glances your way. Between the mud that coated your lower half and the water that dripped from every fiber of your clothing, you realized you had to look like a walking disaster, and that sobering thought had you tucking your hands under your armpits as you hurried to the bar at the back of the room.
The older gentleman wiping down the counter turned to face you, his aged face showing obvious alarm and concern when he caught sight of you. “Merlin’s beard girl, you look like you’ve been dragged straight through hell.”
You flashed him a bashful smile, though you were certain it looked like more of a grimace. “You could say that. You wouldn’t happen to have any rooms available for the night, would you?”
With practiced efficiency, he tossed the rag he’d been holding over his shoulder and shuffled over to the cabinet at the edge of the bar, opening the squeaky glass panel that housed the keys for the rentable rooms. “Ordinarily the answer would be no, but that damned storm blowing through has business movin’ slow. I’ve got two rooms left, one with a bath and the other without.”
Your heart soared as you hastily replied, “The one with the bath, please.” Without missing a beat, you snatched your weighty coin purse from your belt and dropped it on the wooden surface. The barkeeper raised his white, bushy brows in silent surprise as he tentatively picked up the drawstring sac, plucking ten gold pieces from within before handing it back to you. The bronze key he deposited in front of you had a wooden tag dangling from the end that read ‘13’, and for the first time in nearly two weeks you found yourself genuinely smiling as your fist closed around the cool metal.
“Up the stairs and on your left,” he instructed you. “Kitchen is open for another hour if you’re tryin’ to grab a bite before bed, but I’d wager you’re more interested in the runnin’ water.” The way his eyes fell to your soiled clothing didn’t escape you. You almost felt bad for tracking all the mud and water through the lobby.
Twenty minutes later, you had a warm loaf of bread and a small wedge of cheese tucked away in your bag as you ascended the rickety staircase. The decor within the aged tavern was modest, save for the silver plaques that adorned each door with their respective room numbers. Finding your own was a non-issue, and as soon as you were inside the sanctity of the rented space, you let loose a breath that you’d seemingly been holding since setting foot into town. Now wasn’t the time to let your guard down, but you weren’t about to turn your nose up at clean linens and running water.
Moving quietly, you stripped down to your undergarments and tossed your ruined clothing in the corner of the bathroom, then cranked the tub’s faucet to the highest setting and left it to fill. The bread from the kitchen had cooled some, but it hardly made a difference to you as you ripped off a piece and ate it with the cheese you’d purchased. Fresh food was a rarity for you these days, and you savored every bite as you paced the length of the room. With your hunger sated and your looming bath just around the corner, you allowed yourself to think back to the last few weeks, and you pondered just why dark wizards were looking for you.
Understandably, the whole situation reminded you of your fifth-year. Suddenly you were fifteen again, being hounded and hunted by Ranrok and Rookwood alike for simply existing. At that time they had wanted something from you; your abilities, your information, and most prudent of all, your silence. You’d known too much back then, but those times had passed, and both Ranrok and Rookwood were now dead– at your hands, no less.
So why would anyone be looking for you? Who were they to you? What did they want?
It wouldn’t surprise you in the slightest to discover that you had more enemies lurking in the shadows. The stunts you’d pulled and the things you’d gotten away with back then were bound to catch up with you, but you hated not knowing. The whole reason you’d left Hogwarts after graduation without so much as a word to anyone was precisely because you didn’t want your whereabouts known. The line between friend and foe had started to blur towards the end, though you acknowledged that it was mostly your fault.
You hadn’t turned Sebastian in, but you also hadn’t moved to stop Ominis from doing so.
With him imprisoned in Azkaban and Ominis reeling from the decision, it was no wonder the two of you had drifted apart in the years that followed. Anne’s curse worsening had only exacerbated Ominis’ feelings, and you’d graciously stayed out of his way anytime you saw him around school. Natty had never fully recovered from Harlow’s use of the Cruciatus curse on her, and your guilt had in turn driven you further away from her. Poppy was the only person you’d stayed in touch with for the remainder of your academic life, but she was too good a person to drag down with your… issues. You’d ultimately been the one to cut contact with her following your seventh-year, and while you’d felt bad about it at first, you knew it was for the best.
After tonight, that decision had proven to be the right one. If you really were being tracked, were any of your former friends targets for information? Did this impromptu, wild goose chase have anything to do with your volatile abilities from the repository? Had you unwittingly put them in harm's way simply because they knew you?
The bread in your mouth had gone soft, and you shook the pointless thoughts from your mind as you finished off your mediocre dinner and made for the bathroom. The warmth from the water was divine and single-handedly chased away any lingering doubts about holing up in a public place for the night. For just this once, you would gladly trade sleeping in the cold, wet dirt for the pending restlessness and paranoia that was bound to greet you, and greet you it did.
After climbing under the itchy but clean blankets, you stared wide eyed up at the ceiling for what felt like hours. Every squeak of a floorboard, every booming laugh that echoed up the stairs, every shadow that darted past your window, all had your heart racing. Even after checking twice that the two points of entry were indeed firmly locked, your nerves wouldn’t steady. Your skin crawled with unease at the prospect of being blindsided in an unfamiliar place, and at one point you even began pacing the length of the tiny room just to tire yourself out.
Eventually, you came to a grinding halt at the foot of the bed, your hands curling into fists as you sucked down a slow, deep breath. “You’re fine,” you murmured to yourself. “You’re fine. It’s okay, you’re safe, you’re fine.”
Maybe if you repeated it enough times you would start to believe it.
The second time you crawled beneath the prickly sheets your brain was still running in overdrive, but you were far less fidgety than before. You had no clue how you managed it, but eventually your eyes drifted shut– and even if it ended up being a fitful bout of sleep, you would be grateful for the few hours of shut eye you managed to acquire.
Gratitude went right out the window, however, when you were startled awake by a whispered, “Petrificus totalus.”
Your body locked up– stiff and unable to move an inch below the scratchy covers– and before you even had the chance to glance in the direction of the disembodied voice, they whispered a different sort of charm.
One that made your world go dark.

Chapter 7.
You wake up in the kind of silence that feels unnatural.
It’s strange, getting dreamless rest lately and having full nights of sleep, the kind you haven’t had in years. Maybe it’s the exhaustion catching up with you. Or maybe it’s something shifting in the world.
Sukuna mutters something about more prep work, and like always you roll your eyes at him before getting ready.
The next thing you know, you’re in passenger, the road stretching endlessly before you. Sukuna drives with one hand on the wheel, the other drumming idly against his thigh. The early afternoon sun glares against the windshield, streets quiet. Dead. No traffic, no pedestrians, just empty roads and the occasional stray dog sniffing at overturned trash bins. The kind of eerie stillness that makes you hyperaware of the weight of what you’re about to do.
You’re not knocking over a convenience store this time.
The safehouse comes into view, a rundown, abandoned-looking structure, rusted metal and cracked concrete. Sukuna pulls into the gravel lot, tires crunching as he kills the engine. As you go to open the door and step out, his voice stops you.
“Stay behind me.”
It’s not a suggestion.
He approaches the heavy metal door, knocking twice, then once more before it cracks open.
A man walks out, broad-shouldered, inked-up, and wearing a stained wife-beater. He looks like someone who’s seen more than his fair share of bloodshed. A half-smoked cigar rests between his fingers, the embers flaring as he exhales slow. His eyes flick to you before settling on Sukuna.
“Didn’t think I’d see you again.”
Sukuna grins, reaching into his jacket and pulling out a thick envelope of cash. “Yeah, yeah. You know I like to keep things exciting.”
The man peels back the flap, thumbs skimming the stacks of cash before nodding toward the staircase leading to the basement. “Same rules.”
The descent is dim, air thick with gunpowder. Bulbs hang loosely from the ceiling, barely illuminating the underground space, but even in the dim light, you can still see the arsenal lining the walls.
Rows of firearms, assault rifles, shotguns, compact pistols, anything and everything. Silencers reside beside neatly arranged magazines. Machetes and combat knives hanging in display, some pristine and others stained from use. A whole selection is dedicated to explosives, thermite charges, RDX bricks, and plastic explosives.
You drag your fingers along the edge of a semi-automatic pistol. Sukuna watches, arms crossed.
“Cute,” he muses, taking it out of your grasp and sliding over a SIG MCX .300 blackout. “Hope you weren’t expecting to scare anyone with that pea shooter.”
You pick up the assault rifle, flipping it over in your hands. “Oh, I’m sorry, did you want me to carry something else? Maybe a fucking bazooka?”
Walking over to place your primary weapon and sidearms in the bag, you eye the box of armor sitting in the corner.
You toss him a vest. He catches it effortlessly, looking at you.
“Try not to get shot,” you say dryly. “Would be a shame to lose that pretty face.”
His grins sharpens. “You checkin’ me out, doll?”
You scoff but your face feels warm. You turn back to the shelves, fingers brushing over the cold metal of a C4 charge before picking it up. Grabbing the detonator, you set both into the bag.
The room is silent except for the sound of bullets clicking into magazines, a steady, meditative rhythm.
You’ve never been one to trust easily. Hell, you spent most of your life keeping people at arm’s length and watching your own back because no one else would. But here you are, standing across from Sukuna in a dimly lit armory, loading up for the biggest job of your life. And you realize, you’re not watching your own back. Because he’s watching it for you.
It’s not in the way he says things, because he isn’t the type to lay it out in words. It’s in the things he does, how he stands too close when you’re out in public, body angled ever so slightly in front of yours, scanning the crowd with sharp eyes. The way his fingers find your arm when you’re moving through tight spaces, guiding you without a word. How he never lets you walk on the side of the street closest to traffic, making you take the bed in the motel furthest from the door. Small things, quiet things. Enough that when you notice, your chest tightens with something foreign.
He’s focused, oblivious to the way your gaze lingers. His shirt stretches too tight over his arms, muscles flexing with every movement as he loads and unloads each magazine. Testing, counting. Like this is just another day. Like this isn’t the moment everything changes.
You first heard about him the way everyone did, through blood-soaked headlines and urgent news bulletins. His name wasn’t only whispered in the underworld, but broadcasted and stamped in bold letters across the country, a warning to the weak and an invitation to the reckless.
“Authorities urge civilians to report any sighting – Ryomen Sukuna remains highly dangerous.”
You remember sitting in a dingy apartment, one you got lucky to score that still had electricity. It was a high-stakes heist turned slaughter. A vault emptied in under five minutes. Two security guards executed, their bodies found lined up like offerings. A police shootout on the freeway that left cars flipped and burning, insides scorched beyond recognition.
Back then he was a ghost, a nightmare. The kind of criminal whose legend outweighed the truth, whose crimes bled into folklore until no one knew what was real anymore. Some said he carved a trail of bodies through every job, never leaving loose ends. Others swore he had inside men in the police, slipping through cracks like smoke.
You remember thinking to yourself, what a crazy bastard.
You weren’t afraid. Never afraid. More intrigued that he was out there, running circles around the same law enforcement that had their boot on your neck since the day you held a stolen wallet. But Sukuna didn’t just survive, he thrived. Tearing through the system like it was his for the taking.
That was nearly two years ago, and you never thought your path would cross his. Never thought you’d be here, preparing for a job he invited you on, loading magazines for something that will put both your faces on every goddamn screen in the city.
You look at him again, how his fingers move with precision over the rifle on the table, a scar cutting through his knuckles like a jagged promise.
Infamous fugitive. Highly dangerous.
You smile. They have no fucking idea.
The motel room is dimly lit, cheap walls muffling faint traffic from outside. Dinner was a quiet affair, takeout from a run-down ramen joint Sukuna claimed was “the only decent shit in this city.” You weren’t about to argue, especially when the broth was rich, noodles thick.
Things settled down. Plans were scribbled, checked. The weight of the heist pressed a little less, and he was knocked out cold.
He lay sprawled across the mattress, shoes still on, limbs heavy with exhaustion. Planning a bank heist from the ground up wasn’t exactly light work, but you’d never seen it wear on him like this. His head was tilted slightly to the side, pink hair an absolute mess from the way he kept running sweaty fingers through it earlier, too stressed to care. The sharp cut of his jawline softened under lamplight, the blank ink of his tattoos standing out stark against his skin. They looked fresh, even though you knew they weren’t.
You watched him, fingers tapping against your thigh. This was him without the hard edge, the razor-sharp smirk, the cocky bite of his words. He looked so unguarded.
Your lips curled into something wicked, sliding your phone from your back pocket. You bite your bottom lip to stifle a laughter as you pressed the button.
Click.
He shifted at the sound, brow twitching, but didn’t wake.
You stepped back, pressing a hand over your mouth as you stared at the photo. Blurry but unmistakable. The infamous Sukuna, all terrifying and bloodstained, dead to the world with his lips parted in sleep.
About an hour later, he stirred.
You were fresh out of the shower, towel-dried hair damp against your shoulders, sitting cross-legged on the bed, notes and scrawled out plans scattered in front of you. Your concentration broke when you noticed his movement, pushing himself upright at the edge of the bed, slow blinks of sleep dragging his expression.
You smiled, reaching for your phone and clicking it on before turning it to him. The lockscreen lit up, showing his face, relaxed, peaceful, utterly defenseless in sleep.
His gaze sharpened instantly.
“The fuck is this?” His voice rough with sleep, immediately irritated. “You got a thing for creepy shit like this?”
You leaned back, absolutely delighted at his reaction.
“What? It’s a nice picture. Thought I’d keep it for good luck.”
He exhaled sharply through his nose, something between a scoff and a growl. His eyes cut back to you, narrowing like he was internally debating whether to be actually pissed or not. You didn’t miss the twitch at the corner of his mouth, the smirk he was trying, and failing, to bite back.
“I don’t need some pathetic picture to keep me around.” His voice dropped. “You really that stupid?”
It was rhetorical.
Before you could come up with a comeback, he flicked your forehead, shoving himself off the bed, and making his way to the bathroom.
You grinned after him, thumb absently tracing over the edge of your phone.

Bucky's words hung in the air, it prompted a sense of anticipation. You nodded as meeting his gaze, both curiosity and concern rushed through you.
"What is it?" you asked softly, as the gravity of his tone set in.
Taking a deep breath, he reached out to take your hand in his. "I know this isn't ideal," he started, looking down at your hand rather than into your eyes he began to rub circles against your skin.
"Us, um, sneaking around, keeping this hidden." You listened intently, trying to ignore the knot forming in your stomach.
"But," he continued, his gaze found its way back to yours. "I also know that being with you is worth it." His vulnerability took you by surprise, warming your heart. "I want to make this work."
With a small smile, you squeezed his hand, silently giving him the reassurance he needed to tell you what was on his mind.
~
"What are we doing here?" Peter asked while looking up at the 'Stark's Motor's' sign above the rundown car and bike garage. "You know this is Tony Stark's family's business right? Tony Stark as in Bucky Barnes' friend?" Wanda had been curious about the tension between the two groups of friends, she sensed that it was deeper than simply, different personalities.
"Can I help you with something?" Tony asked as he looked Peter and Wanda up and down. They seemed familiar to him but he couldn't quite place them. Wanda looked around Tony, noticing the rest of the group gathered on sofas behind him.
Just as she expected, Bucky Barnes, for being the so-called 'leader' of the group, wasn't to be seen.
"We know about the bets," Wanda stated, gaining the attention of the whole group. The smirks that found their way to their faces proved to Wanda and Peter that the rumors were true. Concern for their friend became evident between them.
"What bets?" Natasha Romanoff questioned them, her tone guarded.
"When you bet each other on how far you can get with someone," Peter interjected before Wanda could, his voice rushed.
"What about them? You want in or something?" Loki, Peter recognized as the younger brother of Thor, questioned with a mischievous smile. He noticed that he was the only one of the gang who would ever show their face to the game.
"No," Wanda began to make her way around the service counter, moving closer to the group of friends. "We want you to tell us what our friend did to deserve being a part of your games," she demanded, standing her ground.
Natasha rolled her eyes before standing up, closing the distance between herself and Wanda in an attempt to intimidate her. "Who's your friend?" she asked curiously while crossing her arms over her chest.
"Y/N Rogers," Peter answered for Wanda, she was intensely looking up at Natasha with furrowed brows. "Steve Rogers' little sister." A silence surrounded the garage at the mention of Rogers.
"She's been on the off-limits list for, what, two years now?" Peter Quill spoke up while looking around the group of his friends. The worst 'bad boy' in the group had, barely got into any trouble, and wasn't mischievous; he just liked to tell jokes and wear a red leather jacket.
"What's the off-limits list?" They asked Quill simultaneously, snapping their heads in his direction. Catching the moment Stark punched him in the arm, he had said too much.
Sighing, Natasha seemingly began to relax more around the other students, going back to where she had previously been sitting. “The list of people we, under no circumstances, are allowed to bet on,” she explained, her voice still hinting at the annoyance the pair was causing. “She’s been on that list since her first day of freshman year?” she continued, looking around at her friends to confirm the amount of time. They all nodded in agreement.
“Too bad the same couldn’t have been said for her brother,” a sense of amusement in Stark’s voice as he spoke under his breath.
“Oh yeah, Natasha lost Buck some real cash on that one.” Quill laughed before taking a drink from the bottle he’d been nursing since Wanda and Peter arrived.
Wanda and Peter shot each other a glance, a silent conversation of understanding happening between them. As they exchanged the silent vow to uncover more, they turned about to the group, knowing they were diving into dangerous waters. Bucky and his friends were the most feared pack in the school, only Steve and his friends weren’t worried about getting on their bad side. Even then, a few of them still watched their backs.
“We need to know everything,” Wanda exclaimed, causing the group to bring their attention back to the younger peers.
Natasha’s eyes narrowed, but there was a slight hint of respect for the girl. “You two don’t know when to quit, do you?” she muttered under her breath. Ignoring Natasha’s remark, the two friends stood their ground. Not moving until someone talked.
~
Bucky hesitated for a moment, struggling to find the right words. Taking a deep breath, his heart pounded. “Back in freshman year, I… I made a bet with Natasha,” he admitted.
Your brow furrowed with confusion, “What kind of bet?” You asked, voice trembling slightly, you felt like you already knew the answer. Hearing it aloud, you feared it would make it real.
His gaze dropped from yours as he swallowed hard, “I bet that she couldn’t sleep with Steve,” he confessed, your hand dropped from him as your body went into a state of shock. Your mind went back to the night before, how he reassured you that you weren’t a part of it. You remember now that he never denied the fact that they do make bets. “I didn’t think she would do it, Y/N,” he looked up, his eyes filled with remorse as he called you by your name rather than his nickname for you.
“Why?” you whispered, your voice barely audible over your heart pounding. “If you didn’t think she would, why did you?”
“We were freshmen, we were just having fun,” he sighed, trying to defend himself and the friends he saw as family. “He was an easy target back, a try-hard, it was supposed to be a joke,” he ran a hand through his hair, as he rushed his words.
The weight of his confession sank into your bones. You couldn’t believe what you were hearing. Disbelief surged through you, you couldn’t process everything at once. His reasoning only added to the turmoil swirling inside.
There was a silence settling between you, your breathing and the background noise for the diner was the only sound. The image of Steve, oblivious to the wager placed on him, added another layer of hurt.
You finally found your voice, it trembled as you held back tears. Not only were you hurting for your brother but, you couldn’t help shake the feeling that Bucky was lying about you. “How could you?” you questioned.
“I know I messed up,” Bucky’s voice softened, his hand reaching out as if to bridge the growing distance. “I mean, it’s most likely the main reason he wants me nowhere near you,” his words trailed off, and you turned away.
You looked everywhere but in Bucky’s direction, afraid of the tears threatening to spill. “I’m guessing she then discarded him like he never mattered?” you asked, recounting the warning Steve had given you about Bucky and his friends.
Another sigh from Bucky. “After everything, Steve caught feelings for her but it was just a game to her so she ignored him and has since,” he explained as he played with the straw in his milkshake glass. “It wasn’t until a couple of months later that he found out it was a bet, a bet that I started,” he began mumbling to himself about wishing he had a smoke or a drink before continuing. “We’ve never been okay since, which I understand on some level, but, he came out stronger I guess,” the confused look behind your teary eyes made his heart clench. “That was when he suddenly gained muscle and became the star athlete he is today.”
“I don’t know what to say,” you admitted, you struggled to hear it yourself as you tried to find the words.
Bucky nodded, he understood that telling you would have been painful. He saw the amount of compassion and empathy you carried in your heart, he knew it was risky for him to tell you the truth. He wished he could tell you, we fought once over nothing but stupid boy stuff, but, he couldn’t.
“I understand,” he replied softly, his head dropped landing his gaze on the table between you. “I’m sorry I hurt you, and Steve. I just, I don’t want there to be secrets between us as well.” Even though your heart ached for your brother and Bucky’s confession, you offered him a small nod.

Azris Week 2024 Master List
I knew I wanted to participate in @azrisweek this year but I think I went nuts. Tried to make sure I planned only one shots but a couple of things will be WIP. I have also decided that I hate everything I have ever written but you’re getting it anyway 🤣
Going through final edits the next couple days. Here's a rundown….
Ps… I’m the worst summarizer EVER…
⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄
Day 2: Familiars || Once Upon A Dream
14k words || READ ON AO3
Elain is nice, quiet and easy to be around. Azriel and his shadows find solace in her company. When her powers as seer become evident however, Azriel is forced to reckon with a familiar part of his past that is about to take on a whole new meaning.
⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄
Day 3: Contact || Between Us
9k words READ ON AO3
Physics and the Immortality of the Soul . The most ridiculous notion Azriel could have picked to build his career around. He had spent half a lifetime tasking himself with impossible questions which very few people took seriously. A strange nostalgia for things he didn’t understand manifested after a childhood accident. This set his life on a path that one day leads him to the front doors of a strange library full of precious and one of a kind books and an even stranger connection to someone completely unexpected. One of which might finally give him the answers he was seeking.
⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄
Day 4: Free Day || Just for Tonight
9k words READ ON AO3
New High Lords are extremely vulnerable. It’s a well known secret that as the new magic enters their bodies they have no more protection than a newborn. When Eris finds himself forced to take the throne, becoming completely helpless, he goes to the one place, and the one person he thinks may just save him.
⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄
Day 5: Slice of Life || The Trees Told Me About You
8k words READ ON AO3
A few months after their mating frenzy “activities” in the dirt of the Autumn Court. High Lord Eris finds himself drawn to the very woods he and his mate had shamelessly rolled around in.
What he finds there shapes their lives forever.
This can be read independently but if you want additional context and did not read Kerosene, you can read the first half of this chapter
⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄
Day 6: Changes || When Even Moonlight Burns
Chapters 1 & 2 (WIP) || 10k words READ ON AO3
The long list of things Eris had found to be grateful for over the years, not so surprisingly, didn't exactly feature a quiet, unassuming existence. The thrill in what he was, demanded pride and exhibition, and gods was he good at playing that game. Well, he had been good at it. Now, as much as he loathed to admit it, there was an odd satisfaction to be found in the simplicity he had agreed to. Unfortunately, as Eris quickly finds out you can't always have the brutes you want... and eat them too.
⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄
Day 7: Solstice || What we Deserve
Chapters 1 & 2 (WIP) || 13k words READ ON AO3
Once upon a time, Eris thought that he and Azriel could be mates whose bond just hadn’t settled yet. It didn’t make sense for him to be so drawn to the male when they were at odds in every other way. It had to be the Mother, had to be fate. Now he knew for sure, it had been none of those things, only simple, stupid want. What happens when Azriel finally finds his mate but it isn't the the male he is already in love with?

Danganronpa: Despair Time Mastermind Ranking (Least to Most)
Yeah, I should’ve known that I needed to get around to this someday.
You see, the reason why I hadn’t made a theory about the identity of the Despair Time mastermind is that… I'm not totally convinced on any one person being the mastermind. Like, look at these clowns! They’re all so weird! I love them all for it, obviously, but none of their personality quirks or roles in the story stand out to me as particularly mastermind-y. There are a lot of characters that I believe could be the mastermind, but it’s also pretty easy to convince me out of it for one reason or another.
However, it’s not like I had any idea about who the P:EG mastermind would be, either! At least with two chapters under its belt, I can feel more comfortable that I’m not just fully mischaracterizing the Despair Time cast. And I definitely have things to say about various DRDT masterminds, just… in a way that’s kinda hard to rank.
But, that’s no reason for me to be cowardly! I’m sure that seriously scrutinizing all of the characters’ mastermind potentials and ultimately coming up with who I think the most likely candidate is will be super fun. It’s just… going to be really long, so, buckle in. And maybe prepare to take breaks in the middle.
(Spoilers for all three main canon games and DRDT.)
Why is it going to be so long? Well, it’s because, when it comes to DRDT, I think that my predictions will be at least partially based on how long I think each character will make it into the story. If I have a particularly strong inclination that a character is going to die in Chapter 3.456, no matter how unfounded, it might make me feel worse about their prospects of being the mastermind. That’s not to say that a mastermind can’t appear to die (or actually die) before Chapter 6 rolls around, of course. However, it is an uncommon additional hurdle to the story that would require some justification and a little suspension of disbelief if I’m trying to call it years before it transpires.
So, if we’re going to talk about the mastermind, I need to share my current feelings about where each character might place in the death order. Should I update the title…?
Danganronpa: Despair Time Mastermind Ranking (Least to Most) AND ALSO Death Order Predictions
These are my mastermind rankings, so my opinions on where the characters might be headed will obviously be used as the baseline. Naturally, you don’t need to believe in anything I'm about to throw out here. I’m just trying to explain my thought process so that nothing I say later on will come as a total surprise.
Also, since it’s kind of long, here’s the top of the death order section. I think it’ll provide some important context, but if you want to skip it, look for the other green, bold text.
Some of my thoughts were inspired by anderscim’s death predictions theory, as I read that pretty soon after I joined the fandom. I encourage you to go read their work as well!
The tiers are mostly pretty self explanatory– 3-4 means I think they’re at risk of dying sooner and 4-5 means I think they’re at risk of dying later. But, I’ll give everyone what I hope to be a quick rundown on each character just to explain my thinking.
Xander: Xander canonically died as the Chapter 1 victim.
Min: Min canonically died as the Chapter 1 blackened.
Arei: While I respect the concept, I personally don’t believe in the “J and Arei swapped places and Arei is actually still alive” theory, and I will be writing the rest of this post accordingly. So, to me, Arei canonically died as the Chapter 2 victim.
Eden: Pretty much anyone who’s seen my DRDT theories at this point shouldn't be surprised that I’m listing Eden as the Chapter 2 killer. The logic behind this belief has been explained by my lovely mutuals here and here.
Levi: Alright, on to the ones I don’t have any concrete evidence to support! (There is concrete evidence behind the ch2 murder, even if you believe it points elsewhere.) Levi has had a decent amount of focus already in his trainwreck of a relationship with Ace and discussions of morality with Eden and Teruko. If he does serve as an accomplice to the Chapter 2 killer (see the first link in Eden’s section), then I feel like his clock will really be ticking. He’d be trapped with the branding of a bad person, his greatest fear, and left without any relationships to lean on. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone targeted him as a victim they “believed deserved to die after what happened,” or even if Levi decided that he was doomed to be a villain from the start and decided to kill. Alternatively, he could try to redeem himself as a classic Chapter 4 buff curse sacrifice in some way. In either case (or even in the case of him just being the Chapter 2 killer), I have my doubts that he’ll be making it too much later into the game.
Arturo: To me, Arturo doesn’t feel like a character set up for incredible longevity. That doesn’t mean I’m pigeonholing him as a one-dimensional villain or pure comedic relief, just that Arturo seems like a character who might be set up to have his ideology lead to his downfall. I don’t think he’s dying in Chapter 2, as I believe the narrative would want to see how he reacts to J burning the bridges between them, but I could definitely see the story only needing one more round of daily life (or possibly a trial as well) to resolve wherever his character is going.
Charles: Look, it’s not only because he’s already been pronounced dead at 3. As I elaborated upon in Charles’ section of this post (The Jerk), Charles feels like he’s speeding towards the end of his character arc far ahead of schedule. It could just be that he needed to learn to make friends quickly before Whit makes an early exit, sending him on a secondary arc where he learns to process his current grief and fears as a parallel to regaining memories about Elliot. However, I find it much more likely that the Inevitable CharWhit Doom Scenario plays out in the opposite direction. He makes a lot of sense as a Chapter 3 victim to me.
Nico: Similar to Arei and J, I am writing all of my theories with the assumption that it really was Nico who attempted to murder Ace in Chapter 2, because I think it makes the most narrative sense. (I could keep typing out a “well, unless” every time, but I don’t really want to eat up my time writing or your time reading all of that.) Through that lens, the fact that Nico has already murdered someone and “gotten away with it,” more or less, puts them in a really weird situation. I don’t really see them killing again, as it feels like we’ve already explored the emotional and narrative implications of that happening through Chapter 2. Although, I can’t deny that it would be interesting to see the fallout of Ace being proven totally right and Hu 100% wrong. Still, if they were to be a survivor after doing something so severe so early into the game, it seems like they would have to undergo some sort of redemption for the audience to accept them as a face of hope in the end. I don’t currently see any great paths to that happening, although there’s obviously still plenty of story time for something to open up. For now, though, I feel more confident in placing them as a early/mid-game victim, likely as a consequence of choosing to harm someone else.
Hu: Given her overall lack of focus in the story thus far, I find it likely that Hu will be one of the focal characters of the Chapter 3 daily life. That could be bad news, considering how Xander and Arei fared after being focused upon in their respective daily lives, but… I dunno, I just feel like Hu would survive it, somehow? Wouldn’t be too surprised if she didn’t, but my gut instinct is that she would. I kind of see her character exiting the story in Chapter 4, no preference on killer vs victim.
Veronika: Veronika is a very weird character (an “oddball,” I’ll call it), and thus, my predictions for her are strongly based on the patterns that oddball characters normally follow. I’ll be using canon characters only, because I believe that those are the only killing games that I have the right to assume every DRDT fan has seen. But, you can apply these same kinds of patterns to many fangan characters. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for fangans breaking from typical Danganronpa norms and following their own paths. But, in the case of how oddballs are treated, I think these characters generally tend to follow these patterns because they’re sensible writing practices. I’ll try to explain why each of these conventions makes sense in the following bullet points.
Oddballs tend not to die in Chapters 1 or 2. This is because oddball characters are generally created to supply a very niche kind of comedic relief– examples from DRDT could include Arturo’s commentary on ugly people or Ace’s bizarre remarks of cowardice. Any character deemed worthy of being included in a fangan occupies one of 16 highly contested slots. So, if you include a character for the purpose of making jokes with them, you'll want to get your bang for your buck! It’s hard to fit every joke you have in mind into only a chapter or two. The best example I could come up with for a (canon) oddball who dies early is Teruteru. In his case, the writers likely anticipated that his hyper-flirtatious nature would get tiring if it continued on for too long, and thus, exhausted all of the jokes they wanted to make in Chapter 1 before his exit. An oddball who dies this early has a limited shelf life, and is likely accompanied by other oddballs who can pick up the comedic slack.
Many have pointed out that silly oddballs often die in Chapter 3 (Hifumi, Ibuki, Tenko) as a way to signify the death of fun and innocence. You also have a chance to get rid of some of the more sinister oddballs (Celeste, Kiyo) at a point where it seems unfeasible for them to have stuck around this long without… well, killing someone. In either case, it’s because Chapter 3 is a great balance of letting a character stay in a story for long enough that they achieve whatever strange effects you wanted from them, while also clearing them off the stage before you get into the really serious business. Silly oddballs especially may not be equipped to handle the often turbulent natures of Chapter 4 without breaking the serious tone too much, so it’s best to axe them at the midpoint.
Endearing oddballs (Gundham, Gonta) have a hard time making it past Chapter 4. If Chapter 4 is serious, Chapters 5 and 6 are even more so, and the Chapter 4 killer slot in particular is a viable dumping ground for characters who don’t really have a place in the finale. Their deaths are meant to pull at your heartstrings and prove how a killing game can make literally anyone– yes, even that guy– a killer. (Miu is an outlier; more like an extended Chapter 3. Unlike THH, which has its tonal shift at the end-of-Ch3-Sakura Traitor Reveal, and SDR2, which has its tonal shift at Mikan’s insanity and death, v3’s tonal shift comes at Kokichi's accusation and Kaito and Shuichi's argument, or possibly even Miu's death itself. The Chapter 4 Daily Life isn’t all that serious in and of itself. Thus, Miu dying as a Ch4 victim functions more like killing off a silly oddball before she has to deal with all the betrayal and scheming that occurs later on.)
Oddballs really only die in Chapter 5 to the extent that you can count major antagonists like Nagito and Kokichi as Weird Dudes. As the precursor to the big, showstopping, mind-bending Chapter 5 Trial, the mood is typically pretty… straightforward. Depending on the overall plot’s arc, Chapter 5 is either the point where most of the surviving students are concluding their character arcs and learning how potent a weapon teamwork is (THH, SDR2), or a “dark night of the soul” type moment where all of the slowly growing inter-character conflicts are finally coming to a head (v3). It can also be Version A for some characters and Version B for others, but, either way, hijinks are not ensuing, basically. Plot relevant things happen here, and as such, plot relevant characters are the ones who are dying. It can be hard for an oddball to find a place in the narrative relevant enough to serve as one of its final, poignant deaths without also being a major antagonist.
Despite everything I’ve said about oddballs dying, it is definitely possible for oddballs to survive. Danganronpa is, at its core, a dark comedy, and as such killing off all of your funny joke characters before the ending is probably a bad move. Hiro, Toko, Kazuichi, and Himiko are all characters I’d call oddballs that survive until the very end. The difference in their case is that part of their oddball nature is being… kind of pathetic? I think it helps them fade into the background more. It's also probably easier to give them a character arc than some others... like Veronika.
I’m sure that you can find exceptions to these “rules” I’ve laid out, especially amongst casts that have a high percentage of oddballs (which you could certainly argue fits DRDT). However, pattern recognition brain go brrrr. I don’t think that Veronika fits the description of a Chapter 1-2, Chapter 4, or survivor oddball particularly well. That leaves Chapter 3 (sinister) and Chapter 5 (bewildering antagonist). I don’t know if it’s that Veronika doesn't seem to have much of a reason to kill at this point in time or all of Veronika’s weird mastermind coding that makes me think DRDTdev might have greater plans for her. Either way, I’m leaning Chapter 5, probably victim. Jeez, that was a long section for one character. Favoritism, I guess?
J: J gets her own category because, honestly, I have no idea what to do with her. Could J make it to the end? Sure! Could J die in a Chapter 3 scheme? Sure! Could J be the Chapter 2 killer? Well, I personally believe the evidence points elsewhere, but in terms of narrative? Sure! The only real inclination I have is that I think it’s more likely that she would be a killer than a victim, mostly because Ultimate Effects Artist is a talent that could lend itself to some really creative and fun murder setups. Given that I have more characters pegged as early game deaths right now, I lean towards J late game, but… man, I don’t know!
Teruko: Teruko is the protagonist, and also is a Lucky Student who allegedly “can’t die.” Especially after she made that claim, it would be silly if she died before the ending– it’d just kinda make her look like a fool. I’m not averse to theories where Teruko is no longer the protagonist by the end, whether by her death or someone else taking up the role for whatever reason, but in the sense that “Survivor” = “Chapter 6,” I think Teruko will survive. I’m not here to predict crazy last-minute Kiibo-blowing-himself-up twists.
Rose: I think that Rose has a really nice arc of overcoming her fears and becoming less passive set up in front of her. We spent enough time establishing her relationship with Teruko that I could see her being a good potential friend/support character to Teruko in the endgame if relationships with people like Eden or Charles fall through. (And, at this point, you know what I think about Eden and Charles…) She’s also good at delivering low-key jokes that can provide some levity without totally ruining the tone. We already saw some of that in this scene. The main things that I think could be standing in her way are her photographic memory and history of debt. The photographic memory could be too annoying of an obstacle to write around for the entire game, and instead be an ongoing effect set to expire in in Chapter 3. Additionally, a money motive paralleling THH’s in Chapter 3 could be too tempting for Rose to pass up. Really, what I’m saying is, if Rose can make it through Chapter 3, I think she’s golden. We’ll just have to see how that Chapter pans out in the future.
David: Oh, David. Currently serving as Teruko’s largest antagonist, I can see why people would think that he would die in Chapter 5. However, I’m not going to beat around the bush and pretend that I’m the only person who thinks David might survive, either. As an inspirational speaker, David is established early on as a character who should be a beacon of hope, before revealing that he’s more of a hope-sucking black hole. It would make sense if, alongside Teruko, he learns to find more of a balance between blithe optimism and cynical depression and heal as a person. He has a lot of very obvious depth that I think a lot of people want to see explored, and whose exploration would be very on-brand for the themes of a typical killing game story. Plus, if Teruko ever does stop being the protagonist, David probably needs to be alive at that point to pick up the slack.
Ace: Similar to Nico, it seems like we’ve already gotten a taste of what Ace being a victim would be like, in a way where I don’t think we’re going to see it again. He could still be a killer, but would the cowardly Ace even want to attempt killing someone and throwing himself into the scrutiny of a Class Trial? Well, it is true that Ace believes that “[neither] dying young or living a long, shitty life of suffering… are as bad as this” (the killing game?). So, he could simply grow fed up with the killing game and decide that risking a Class Trial is worth it, even if he does wind up dying young. However, if that were to occur, Chapter 2 seems like the narratively best time to do it, as it’s when his emotions are most potent and probably when others would least expect him to do it due to his weakened state. Like Rose, I feel the period Ace has most to worry about is this upcoming Chapter 2 killer slot, but if he makes it through, his arc of learning to escape his fear by bravely rising above it instead of lashing out to try to knock everyone down feels very viable.
Whit: The pro of the Inevitable CharWhit Doom Scenario is that, hopefully, one of the two would manage to make it as a survivor after the other one dies. And, I’m Team Whit Surviving! Not just based on which of the two I like better (they’re my first and second favorite characters, so I’m taking a massive L either way), but because I think it makes more sense for it to be Whit that lives further on. Unlike Charles, who feels like he’s already in the final lap of the character arc race, Whit has barely left the starting line. The laundry scene in Chapter 1 and Whit’s secret in Chapter 2 have both been used to establish that Whit focuses on his and others’ bliss in hopes of remaining ignorant of everything that stresses him. The main offender, of course, being that Whit lies about his mom being alive to presumably stave off his grief. The easiest way to give him a character arc that resolves that issue is to give him something to grieve– namely, Charles– and soon. If Whit’s main character struggle is pretending that people dying doesn’t bother him, he might need an entire Chapter or more to stubbornly show off his central flaw. Now, it is possible that, if Whit can’t overcome this flaw, he could die soon after Charles and meet a tragic fate. But, those just… aren’t the vibes, to me? A post-character arc Whit who knows how to grieve fiercely but healthily might come in handy if Teruko finds herself handling her own emotions about Xander, Min, and/or anyone else at the end of the game.
And here’s the bottom of the death order section!
Finally finished writing something that nobody asked of me at all. Well, I still think it was important, and I hope you feel the same.
Now that we’ve laid all that out, I think it’s finally time to actually see who I think the Danganronpa: Despair Time mastermind might be! Although, please keep in mind that, despite the large preamble full of story predictions, I’m still pretty uncertain on who I think the mastermind is. So, my points might not be the best supported, and I might change my mind again pretty soon after I post this theory. I expect to be far better at disproving why everyone is the mastermind rather than proving why anyone would be, because that’s generally how I feel… but, onwards we go!
#17: Arei Nageishi
(Forgive me for reusing art here, I’ve drawn these bastards ENOUGH /j)
If I were writing this after Despair Time’s prologue, like I did with P:EG, there’s a pretty good chance that Arei, at the very least, wouldn’t have placed dead last. But, well, now Arei is dead. And also last.
Obviously, there are other dead characters too. But still, Arei is the one who I most struggle to see as the mastermind. Given that Arei died as a victim whose body was thoroughly investigated by several parties, it’s pretty hard for me to believe that anyone could have missed any signs of life. I don’t get the sense that DRDT is in some kind of simulation where everyone can magically be alive again at the end either, so I think Arei is, sadly, well and truly dead.
On top of all that, we know a lot about her backstory from her Chapter 2 breakdown, and none of it seems to point her towards masterminding a killing game specifically. She doesn’t have any particular ties to any big organizations that would have helped her accomplish it, either. While she is NOT just a temporary weather spell whose absence will be celebrated and then forgotten, David… I have a hard time believing that the audience would find her character relevant enough(?) to be a good twist mastermind come Chapter 6 several years down the line.
I don’t think I really need to keep elaborating on this. Arei isn’t the mastermind.
#16: Charles Cuevas
I know it’s a bit of a bold move to put a character who’s currently alive below characters who have already died, but… man, I really just don’t see how Charles could pull this off.
And it’s not (just) because I think he’s going to die in Chapter 3 as part of Whit’s character arc, or that I want to believe that he’s a good person. Really, it’s mostly because of his phobias. How is a guy who started gagging at the sight of blood splattered on the floor supposed to be the one who orchestrated an entire death game? Could he get through the process of creating a brutal execution like Min’s without freezing up and freaking out? Even if he could do it, why would he? Sure, he didn’t seem to remember the fact that he had necrophobia until Xander died, but that might be even more of a problem. Wouldn’t the mastermind, who’s certainly had to consider the others’ deaths before, remember that they were afraid of death? He would almost certainly have to be lying about at least the scale of his reaction, although that’s probably a given if he is the mastermind.
Of course, there are mastermind subcategories that could better benefit Charles. If DRDT is actually a simulation, especially one in which the participants don’t actually die, that would definitely make it easier for him to be the one behind it. We’re also meant to believe that Charles has childhood amnesia, so he could have amnesia in other areas as well and be a mastermind who forgot they were one.
However, as I said before, I don’t particularly believe that DRDT is going to be a computer simulation or that Charles is an amnesiac mastermind. I just… don’t see this one in general.
#15: Xander Matthews
Let me preface this by saying that I’m not trying to argue that Xander is actually still alive. The concept that he would be able to fool not only Min, making her believe that she dealt him a fatal blow, but also everyone else as they identified his body, seems outlandish to me. However, just because Xander is dead doesn’t mean that he couldn’t have entered this game as the mastermind.
We know for a fact that Xander wanted to kill Teruko due to his dialogue regarding the note he received, which lines up well with the popular theory that Xander is the individual speaking in the first scene with the papers and the blood. If we assume he is that guy, then it may seem a little counterintuitive to think that the person who says “I have to end the killing game” would be the one behind the killing game. However, he also says, “Even if I can’t do that… I have to kill Teruko Tawaki,” implying that killing Teruko is of a higher priority than ending “the killing game.” Thus, if, for some reason, Xander thought that orchestrating the killing game was the only way to kill Teruko, it’s possible that he would be willing to let the death game roll for as long as it takes to eliminate his bigger target.
However, I can’t deny that the Xander mastermind theory has some massive flaws to it. For one, Xander is dead. I don’t think we’ve technically seen any evidence that the mastermind has to still be alive as of Chapter 2, but a mastermind-less Chapter 6 would be… an interesting challenge to write, to say the least. Also, while Xander betraying Teruko and the others was a great surprising hook the first time, if it happened again, it would be kind of… underwhelming, in my opinion. It’s the same kind of concept I brought up in my Eden’s Garden ranking:
Then, in Chapter 6, we’d be faced with the revelation that, wow, the mildly antagonistic character was actually a really antagonistic character all along! It just doesn’t seem like enough of a dramatic hook to me, I guess?
“Wow, the guy who betrayed Teruko and became a killer actually betrayed Teruko and was the mastermind all along! And now, he’s not even around to reap the social or karmic consequences of it!” You see.
And then, there is the literal interpretation of the text that Xander (if he is bloody hands man) obviously stands against the killing games. He’s also the Ultimate Rebel, someone who stands against corrupt institutions in general.
If Xander is revealed to be evil later down the line, it would make much more sense if it was as a traitor type. As for being the one and only mastermind, I think the odds are pretty low.
#14: Ace Markey
Hey, it’s another character that’s alive! And, this one doesn’t even have a crippling fear of death. However, he is a massive coward, and that’s the main thing that’s dragging him down for me.
Similar to Charles, what would Ace stand to gain from hosting a killing game such as this? Ace doesn’t seem to have any interest in notoriety, money, the destruction of society, despair, or any other things that I can think of that would motivate a typical mastermind. We’ve seen time and time again that Ace cares most about having control over both his life and how other people see him, even though he often fails on both fronts. I guess both of those things could be solved by hosting a killing game, but… Come on, there have gotta be easier ways to do that which don’t threaten your precious life.
Furthermore, what exactly would Ace being the mastermind have to say about the story as a whole? Jockey has to be in the running for “talents that are least relevant to a potential killing game host.” How about the idea that the mastermind nearly died in Chapter 2, only to go off the rails threatening and blaming his assailant? I… always knew that Nico was… fully in the right for doing that, because it would have killed the big bad early??? Ace Mastermind is the preferred ending for those who believe that Nico can do absolutely no wrong, lol.
I can’t remember where I saw it, but I once saw a theory of writing that said that there are two major kinds of character arcs. One is the typical character arc, where the narrative pushes a character's traits to change over the course of the story for better of for worse. The other, this theory posited, was an arc on the part of the viewer, where they learn that a character that they thought was flawed was actually not as flawed as they thought all along. You could potentially apply this kind of thing to Eden: in the first chapter, some people may have seen her as a dim-witted positive girl, but in Chapter 2, we firmly establish that her kindness is not stupidity and learn how her optimism is a strength.
So, you could say that the character arc DRDTdev is going for with Ace is something more like that, where we spend the entire game learning to treat him more seriously just in time for him to be a real threat as the mastermind? It still feels like a bit of a stretch, though– I don’t know exactly what Ace would do to make us take him more seriously that wouldn’t either send him on a growth arc not super befitting of a mastermind or wind up with him being a blackened. Ace as the mastermind certainly isn’t impossible, but I obviously found it unlikely enough that I placed him below one character who is currently (presumed) dead.
#13: Arturo Giles
Arturo’s role in the story so far is not very mastermind-ish, in my mind. In the prologue, we establish him as a cold and judgmental person who puts his own opinions of how the world works over everything else, especially how other people feel. This already feels like how a mastermind would act, so if he turned out to be the mastermind, it would be more of the same.
Then, in Chapter 2, we establish that he’s a massive simp for celebrities, to the point of transforming into something adjacent to comedic relief. We’re meant to think that his over-the-top sprites and refusal to actually listen to anything J is saying is hilariously pathetic. Other characters are constantly dunking on him, such as Teruko calling him a “bigoted” “crazy person,” and even the narrative gets in on the action when highlighting how he cares less about the fact that J’s life was at risk than that she didn’t come out of it with drip. Narratively, we’ve already seen these characters get the better of Arturo. If we the audience interpret that as confirmation that the surviving cast could easily beat Arturo should he ever come to stand in their way, it could diminish the stakes upon his mastermind reveal.
However, for all of his negatives, there are some definite positives to Arturo being the mastermind, too. Despite his comedic effects, we have seen through his threats to Eden that Arturo is very capable of being very scary in a way that I don’t think we have with Ace. The horror factor of a plastic surgeon as the mastermind could be a really fun and creepy design theme to explore. And, Arturo is obviously super obsessed with celebrities. If hosting a deadly TV show is what he thought it would take to get him in with the Hollywood celebrity scene, he might be willing to go for it.
I don’t really know why he would have made his secret what it is if he was going to get that upset about it, though. I guess if there just weren’t any better options that wouldn’t tip his hand…? Also, Arturo would blend in terribly as a survivor. If you’re heading into Chapter 6 and you have to pick the evil character out of (let me spin a wheel real quick...) Teruko, Eden, Rose, Charles, and Arturo, Arturo is definitely the evil one. (Okay, that was actually a terrible randomized draw for Arturo on the innocence front, but I hope you can imagine how he would oddly stick out of most groups.) Like I said in his death predictions, I find it hard to imagine a character arc for Arturo, which is why I find it hard to believe that he would make it as far as Chapter 6.
#12: Min Jeung
Honestly, if Min weren’t (most likely) dead, she might be pretty high on my list of mastermind choices. While not as suspicious as the Spurlings, XF-Ture Tech is pretty suspicious, even more so with the introduction of that one altDRDT character. Min is related to XF-Ture Tech, so if that company has anything to do with the operation of the killing game, she could have been the one behind it. Min is also very smart, and her talent has obvious applications for how it could have been used to set up/influence the killing game. The fact that her talent is so similar to Teruko’s, Ultimate Student versus Ultimate Lucky Student, could have also set them up for some great parallels and duality down the line.
However… Min’s role as the Chapter 1 killer throws a pretty big wrench in her chances. Beyond the dying part, Min’s role as the blackened was incredibly evitable. It’s not like she was thrown into a situation where she had to kill or be killed, or even one where a motive was particularly difficult for her. If she wanted to be the mastermind and survive until the end, all she had to do was walk away from Xander stabbing Teruko and pretend she never saw it. However, if Min’s goal was the inverse of ol’ Bloody Hands (keep the killing game running, but most importantly, keep Teruko alive), her actions could line up. And then, perhaps Min could have falsified her own execution early to draw suspicion off of her, much like Junko did by killing Mukuro.
Beyond her death, though, it’s really Min’s reaction to being the blackened that makes me think she can’t be the mastermind. The stellar voice acting in Min’s breakdown scenes makes me really believe both that this was the first time she had ever hurt anyone as gravely as she did to Xander, and that she fully believed that she was about to die. Those are two things that a mastermind, especially one headed into a fake execution, would not be feeling. Maybe Min memorized how to be a great actress too amongst all those textbooks, but I doubt it. I can still see several reasons why Min would have been a good mastermind, but her actual death and her reaction to being told she was dying knock her down several pegs in my mind.
#11: Hu Jing
Hu is a bit more suspicious to me than some others just because I think she has something to hide. Between her refusal to share whose secret she received or had herself, mysterious “I want to pay for what I’ve done” hidden quote, and intense desire to be relied upon, there’s definitely something about Hu as a person that the narrative has yet to uncover. Could that something be “Hu is the mastermind”? I dunno, maybe.
Hu also has a tendency to react to things with her temper. That could be a sort of foreshadowing to how she would act as the mastermind, much like how David’s brief spell of apathy during the prologue hinted at the way he would act further down the line. Hu’s defense of Nico could act much the same way. Our overall impression of Hu at this point is that, while she is a flawed person, she’s one of the nicest and morally best people in the game, who’s always looking out for others. Defending Nico to the point of babying them might cross the line a little, but she’s only trying to help everyone…! Hu could make it to the end as a believably heroic survivor and then reveal that all of her presumed poor decisions were actually active malice, and I think she could pull that off.
All that being said… I don’t, like, actually think that’s going to happen. In fact, I’m probably overexaggerating the extent to which people think that Hu is nice and morally good. I’ve seen several people discuss the unjust amounts of hate Hu gets in this fandom, which implies that a lot of people hate her, even if I haven’t particularly seen much of it myself. At the very least, I definitely over exaggerated the extent to which people believe Hu could survive! As implied in the death order predictions, I do personally think Hu is going to die, possibly as a consequence of getting too invested in everyone else’s business when they don’t want her to be and/or wearing herself too thin. There are paths which I believe could lead to Hu being the mastermind, but they seem to be the roads less likely traveled.
#10: David Chiem
While I have no doubts that David has the fame, charisma, and worldview to pull off a killing game… I’d have to wonder about how he would see himself playing into all of it. As we saw in Chapter 2, David knows that his career has a lot of value, possibly to himself but definitely to other people, and therefore, he doesn’t want to jeopardize it. In fact, the reveal of his manipulative secret was the inciting incident behind his massive change in characterization. So, if he were the mastermind of a televised killing game… How would he think that would play out to his viewers?
Now, to be fair, there’s a lot we don’t know about the worldbuilding of DRDT. MonoTV claims that the TV show will be broadcast to a widespread audience. Perhaps that indicates that, in the world of DRDT, publicly broadcasting talented young peoples’ violent deaths is normal, or even sought after. Maybe the cast of DRDT forgot about it.
However, David seems to think that people learning that he sees everyone as manipulable would do damage to his reputation, so it’s a bit of a contradiction either way. If the world has been wracked with despair and craves intense violence on TV, then David’s reaction to his secret is either an elaborate lie or the result of the mastermind erasing his own memories regarding the situation. (Or, I guess the public could see death as fine and dandy but manipulation as a cancellable offense, which is… one of the interpretations ever.) Otherwise, in the scenario that the DRDT world is a normal one, David wouldn’t care about being revealed as a manipulator if he’d already committed to the mastermind bit. If his career was already preemptively ruined by agreeing to commit literal murder, why get so worked up about the thought that people might abandon ship over you not being 100% honest?
And then, there’s also the whole “surprise factor” thing that I keep bringing up. Admittedly, it’s been a longer hiatus between the start of Chapter 2 and the end of Chapter 2 than DRDTdev might have been hoping for, but that doesn’t change the fact that this part of David’s characterization happened in Chapter 2. DRDT fans far and wide have written thousands of words gushing over “the David reveal” or “evil David.” If David were unveiled as the mastermind, we’d have to start writing stuff about “the first David reveal” or “when David showed his true colors again.” You see how it kind of takes the hype away from such major plot points? That’s the sort of concept I’ve been trying to get across with some of my other choices too, but a bit more clear cut.
I don’t know why I sound so much like a hater in this section (in my opinion) when I’m literally putting David at #10, above seven other characters. I guess it’s because I can see why his theatricality and traits foiling Teruko could make him a good mastermind, but also have some major issues with the logistics of him getting there. A lot of good points versus a lot of bad points settle out to him winding up someone in the middle.
#9: Levi Fontana
With our first single digit number, we’ve also reached our midway point of mastermind candidates: Levi!
Levi would be a really interesting mastermind choice because of how his character centers around grappling with his morality. I think it would be really intriguing to have a mastermind outwardly struggling with their attempts and failures to be a good person throughout the entire game, only for the player and the characters to receive the full context of the debacle at the very end. I guess in this situation, it would be pretty likely that Levi would be redeemed at the end? That’s not necessarily a problem. (Honestly, I don’t know if I think the DRDT mastermind could be redeemed or not based on the fangan’s themes… that’s a post for another day, perhaps.)
Anyways, I think that what we know of Levi’s backstory could work well with him being the mastermind. If he does have the “murderer without remorse” secret, that would be in line with orchestrating a killing game. We also know that he’s “been disowned” and that he and his family were “all bad influences on each other.” We’re meant to assume that Levi was fortunate enough to escape a bad/abusive situation (and in all likelihood this IS what actually happened!!!!), but we are hearing about the situation from his point of view alone. There is a small possibility that, if Levi is actually a despair enjoyer, his family cut him out because they thought he was a danger to their lives.
I will reiterate again, though, that I don’t think this is the case. Levi seems like he’s a chill guy, or at least that he’s trying very hard to be one despite how he’s been told to react all his life. The whole “mastermind wanting to become a good person” lens also makes less sense given how channeled Levi’s development is through Ace. Like, I would imagine that, if this were the angle DRDTdev was going for, Levi would be making an effort to get along with everyone as part of his atonement. The mastermind randomly choosing to focus on just one person out of the crowd seems kind of strange, especially when that person is someone as disagreeable as Ace. That kind of plot would have big “the mafia CEO vampire prince fell head over heels in love with me, the random average girl” vibes. Repenting mastermind Levi is the preferred ending for pining lovers to enemies to lovers AceVi shippers, lol.
And then there’s the part where I think he’s going to die. I don’t think Levi is the worst mastermind choice, but I think there are better out there.
#8: Nico Hakobyan
Yay, we finally got to one of the characters that Anon thought was suspicious! It only took… 7k+ words. Oh boy.
I definitely think that the cat coding is the strongest thing that Nico has going for them. It would be pretty funny if the extent to which “Ultimate Pet Therapist” is relevant to the plot is the climactic reveal that “yeah Nico has been talking to a (robotic) animal the whole time.” That’s a joke, as Ultimate Pet Therapist is already quite relevant to Nico’s characterization as someone who prefers communicating with animals over people, but it would be funny as hell from a character designing perspective.
There are less silly reasons to believe that Nico is the mastermind too, though. While it seems like, similar to David, pulling the trigger on Nico’s change in behavior in Chapter 2 would be a bit early, I don’t think it’s as destructive to mastermind Nico as it is to mastermind David. There’s a lot more doubt in people’s minds that Nico even did anything to Ace, to the extent that a decent number of people (in the story and out of it) think that it was someone else trying to kill Ace entirely. Nico also has a stalwart defender in Hu, which adds an extra level of intrigue to the situation. Instead of confirming that everyone was right to be suspicious of David, at least some amount of focus could be placed onto Hu being wrong for trusting Nico and failing to see someone’s true colors again, which could be interesting for her characterization if she was alive at that point.
On the other hand, the biggest reason that I think Nico isn’t the mastermind is also because of the attempted Ace murder. Why would Nico, as the mastermind, try to kill Ace at this time? If Nico wins the Class Trial, then the killing game is over, which is probably counter to the mastermind’s goals. If Nico loses the Class Trial, well, we’ll say that the possibility of Nico dying isn’t an issue, as they could just fake their own death or deny entering the execution. But still, why?
It could be that Nico was trying to remove themselves from the killing game on purpose, but I don’t see why it would be necessary. No one was particularly suspicious of Nico being the mastermind, and if they were worried about their gender identity getting out, they could have simply made their secret something else. A mastermind could kill to avoid the killing game falling into a standstill, but tensions were really high at the time that Ace almost died! With a full day left to go before the motive secrets were revealed, such drastic action wasn’t yet forced. I guess the best option would be that Nico was just really angered by what Ace said, and wanted to retaliate as part of their vicious mastermind nature. Is that worth taking yourself out of the killing game and risking the show’s termination, though…?
There is also the possibility that Nico is the mastermind, but didn’t try to kill Ace. In that case, suspicion of Nico would be such a huge in-universe coincidence that I’m doubtful DRDTdev would have included it as a major plot point.
Speaking of “show’s termination,” I also don’t know why Nico would have any involvement in creating a TV show, both from a backstory/talent perspective and a personality one. Nico doesn’t like interacting with people. Therefore, I don’t know what would possess them to want to create and join a TV show for which the major draw is a big stressful discussion between a bunch of people.
I guess I had fewer reasons why I thought Nico would be the mastermind than I thought. I would love to hear more details about why you suspect Nico though, Anon! I’m definitely willing to believe that they could be the mastermind.
#7: Eden Tobisa
Make no mistake, I still think that Eden is the Chapter 2 killer. However, in the case that she isn’t… mastermind isn’t a terrible choice for her.
The biggest draw of Eden being the mastermind would definitely be the shock value. The seemingly nicest character suddenly being revealed as the mastermind would create a huge hurdle for the surviving characters to overcome. Teruko especially, given that she probably would have grown at least a tad closer to Eden if they survived five chapters together. It would be a little mean to give Teruko a trustworthy friend just to rip it away from her again, but I could see the opportunity being used to highlight Teruko’s growth. When Xander and Min betrayed Teruko, she panicked and shut everyone out, but when Eden betrays Teruko at the very end, she’s able to remain strong and rely on the other friends who she continues to trust. Or DRDT could have an unconventional feel-bad ending, I suppose.
If some kind of time loop is at play within DRDT, then Eden’s talent would obviously be thematically and perhaps practically relevant as well. I could see a lot of comparisons being made regarding a killing game being run “like clockwork.” Her secret quote “you can’t go back, no matter how hard you try” is... actually kind of anti-time loop, but at least the concept of going back in time is somewhat related…? Speaking of secret quotes, her Mai quote, “she kept calling the number, even though no one picked it up” is also really weird. That suspicious hidden evidence could point to her being the mastermind.
However, Eden’s personality is a pretty major issue when it comes to her being the mastermind. Shock value is great in the moment, but it can ring hollow in retrospect if people find that the twist doesn’t make any sense. Masterminds aren’t typically known for their kindness or optimism. So, if Eden is the mastermind, it seems like her whole “even if this world is cruel, I’ll still make the choice to be kind” speech is a complete lie. And, that would be a shame! I don’t think that having an unexpected mastermind at the end of the game is worth the cost of completely demolishing a character that we’ve come to know and love over the course of six chapters and several years. (I’m not saying that complete demolition has to be the case if Eden is the mastermind, but I think it’s a reasonable worry that many people have.)
And, I know that all this talk about how wonderful Eden is might sound rich coming from someone who strongly believes that she just killed someone who wanted to be her best friend. But, that’s kind of the point, isn’t it? As someone who thinks that Eden is the killer, I know very well how a lot of people have a really hard time believing that Eden could do something as terrible as killing Arei. I can only imagine how hard it would be to accept that Eden was the one who put Arei, Min, Teruko, and everyone else in danger, and the one pulling the strings behind every execution.
Eden as the mastermind, to me, is more tempting in concept than it would be viable in execution. And also, I don’t even think she’s going to live to see the light of Chapter 3 day. However, there’s also some definite emotional power behind the accusation that makes me see how shooting for this ambitious choice could be worth it in the long run.
#6: Whit Young
Alright, it’s finally time to talk about Whit. I know that he’s a really popular mastermind choice, but… I just don’t see it, personally. Even though I put him at 6th place. (I do not enjoy putting him in 6th place.) Is that just because he’s my favorite and I’m attached to my interpretation of the character? Perhaps. But, I’d still like to explore some points that I find faulty.
Perhaps the biggest reason behind suspicion of Whit that I’ve seen is the way that he breaks the fourth wall. People connect his asking people to pause for the evidence list to MonoTV invoking similar mechanics, and lines such as “do you really think she’d be hanging out in the playground” to him knowing more than he’s letting on. However, there are a couple of ways that this accusation can be depowered, in my opinion.
Firstly, Whit isn’t the only person who says stuff like this. Veronika alludes to the killing game before it begins, Teruko also breaks the fourth wall to tell the viewer to pause (albeit only in her thoughts, not out loud), and Arei makes the same kind of “hanging” wordplay in Eden’s flashback that Whit did. I won’t say that characters addressing the fourth wall can’t be important at all, because I believe there are some moments where the other characters commentate on how weird it is that MonoTV is talking to no one. However, I also think that breaking the fourth wall may simply be part of DRDTdev’s humor, as exemplified by that “make sure to like and subscribe so that Teruko has enough mental strength to carry on” joke. Whit is a funny guy, so it just makes sense that if DRDTdev’s brain generates funny meta jokes, Whit would get some of them. Everything that Whit says reminds me more of Mia AceAttorney saying “hit tab to open the Court Record” than some sort of groundbreaking DDLC-Undertale direct communication with the viewer. However, I can see why others would think otherwise.
The second is that I think some of Whit’s comments (more so the “dead at 3” and “hanging in the playground” than the pause) are just meant to showcase his intuition. And, yeah, it could be that DRDTdev has been leaving crumbs of Whit’s intuition behind so that in Chapter 6, he can use it to exploit everyone’s insecurities and greatest despair. To me, though, Whit’s intuition has always reminded me of the myth of Cassandra.
For those who don’t know, Cassandra is a figure in Greek mythology who was blessed/cursed to receive prophecies, but for no one to ever believe them. By my interpretation, Whit is a really smart and perceptive guy who has strikingly accurate gut feelings about how things will play out down the road, even when he doesn’t realize it himself. However, the curse of his own coping mechanism– choosing to act like an eternally cheerful goofball– leads the majority of the other students, and perhaps some of the viewers, to never take his point of view seriously. He can only realize the accuracy behind what he said after the bad things have already happened, leading him to blame himself more and more for not being able to speak up and help when times were tough.
This kind of behavior would line up with two different themes we’ve seen from Whit before. The first, that when he jokes around without thinking, he can accidentally say hurtful things that he later reprimands himself for. We saw that when Charles blew up at him at the end of their shared FTE. The second is Whit’s major theme of good things hiding a darker undercurrent. Being the Ultimate Matchmaker is great until you’ve never had a successful relationship yourself. Having an awesome mom is great until the truth comes out that she’s actually dead, and you’ve been covering it up. Growing super close to someone is great until he dies. Having an amazing intuition and understanding of everyone is great until you can never actually use it to help those you care about. Joking around is great until it's all you can do. Pretending everything is fine is great until it’s not.
Like I said, very specific interpretation. I promise I was not citing classical literature to make my argument sound smarter than it actually is. I am aware that my interpretation of Whit is no less or more valid than everyone else’s. However, it’s one that I hold very close to my heart, and thus, I personally have a hard time seeing around it.
However, I’ve also seen a lot of people argue some valid points for Whit, so I can at least acknowledge that he deserves to be in the upper echelon of choices. There’s a lot of weird stuff regarding him in Literature Girl Insane, and he’s certainly an option of someone who felt so much grief that they became totally empty inside as shown in that one hidden quote. I would be appropriately surprised and heartbroken if Whit revealed himself as the mastermind in Chapter 6, so he checks the box in that regard. There isn’t anything from his backstory that opposes the notion that he set up the killing game, and, to quote what I said about our other Ultimate Matchmaker, Toshiko…
While Ultimate Matchmaker might seem like a silly talent to give the mastermind, it could also be a ruse to distract us from the fact that [Whit] has a talent that allows [him] to read people well and make choices that will impact their lives dramatically.
I don’t like it, but I can see the argument… kind of. To me, most mastermind Whit interpretations feel like mischaracterization, but as a theorist, I always try to keep in mind that I’m the one who could be twisting the text to my whims as well. In this my-opinions-based list, though, he’s not getting any higher than 6th.
#5: Veronika Grebenshchikova
Ooh, what spooky art for a spooky mastermind. Let’s be real, though, Veronika is way too obvious of a mastermind candidate to actually be the mastermind. Unless… she’s so obvious that she loops back around to not being obvious, and thus, is the perfect mastermind candidate?!
Veronika is in a really weird place. I obviously have no doubts that she would have any moral qualms about hosting a killing game, because she’s told us herself that she doesn’t. She knows what Monokuma is in immense detail, but claims to have no idea what a killing game is. She’s dressed really similarly to Junko, though. Is that just a coincidence? Are giant pigtails also a symbol of fear in the DRDTverse? I need ANSWERS, LADY!!!
The biggest problem I see with Veronika is the potential for obviousness. Similar to Arturo, if she actually made it to Chapter 6, I feel like it would be pretty obvious what’s going on. An oddball like Veronika is not the typical survivor type (although she could break the mold). Because Teruko’s character arc is all about trusting people, it would make sense if the reveal of the mastermind was someone who challenged her trust to some degree. With Veronika being obviously unhinged the whole time, I don’t think that Teruko would have any particular difficulties with kicking her to the curb.
However, Veronika clearly has the motive to start a killing game, and potentially to spread despair. DRDT has taken inspiration from Trigger Happy Havoc in the past, so it could make sense if DRDT’s mastermind was also inspired by THH’s. Having a so-obvious-it’s-not-obvious mastermind could also be another way to mess with theorists like me, as DRDTdev did with the comments section portion of Literature Girl Insane. “bro Veronika being the mastermind would be WAY too obvious” sounds EXACTLY like “I just hope XXXXXX doesn’t go crazy and kill in chapter 3. That would be way too predictable” or “XXXXX will obviously die in ch5”. If part of the point of DRDT is to make know-it-all analysts rethink the rules they believe to be set in stone, I could see Veronika as a subversive choice.
Veronika definitely seems to be building up to something, but I don’t know if being the mastermind is exactly it. I think that Veronika could make it pretty late into the game, but I still struggle to see her making it all the way to Chapter 6. I would absolutely love to see what DRDTdev does with her writing if that is the case, though.
#4: Mai Akasaki
(Well, now I feel bad that I’ve never made a colored portrait of Mai.)
As you may have noticed back at our first entry, Arei, I started the countdown off at seventeen, not sixteen. (If you didn’t remember that, I don’t blame you– it was a WHILE ago.) That’s because I thought it was only fair to include DRDT’s best kept(?) secret, the lovely Unnamed Student herself, Mai Akasaki, as an option! Because, man, is she mysterious in some suspicious ways.
“But, didn’t MonoTV tell the students that the mastermind was one of them? Mai isn’t one of the students in the killing game (unless prosopagnosia is REALLY going crazy), so she can’t be the mastermind, right?” Well, yes and no. The scene where MonoTV confirms the existence of the mastermind is SUPER weird. Let’s take a look at it.
On one hand, MonoTV is still in the Movie Screening Room, where it was JUST talking to the student body, so it would only stand to reason that it’s a continuation of the scene we just saw. However, the setting also seems to be doing everything in its power to tell us that this is NOT the same scene we just saw. The lights have been turned off, even though they were on in the scene just before this. They return to being on in the first scene of Chapter 1, which the students treat as being directly after the scene during which the lights were on before. The widget denoting the time, chapter, and episode has completely disappeared, placing this at an even more unknown time than “Time Unknown.” The text indicating that the speaker is MonoTV has even disappeared! I mean, I assume that MonoTV is still the one saying it, considering that it’s on screen and the speech bubble is pointing right at it, but we don’t even know that for sure!
Additionally, MonoTV refers to the viewers directly (“dear viewers”) two speech bubbles after this one, which makes it seem more like MonoTV is talking to us the audience rather than the students in the room. But then, if the mastermind is “one of you,” and MonoTV is talking to us, wouldn’t that mean the mastermind is someone in the audience? That could lead in to some really meta interpretations of the text (i.e. “DRDTdev is the mastermind of DRDT because he’s the one who created the killing game”) or it could indicate that I’ve gone fully off the rails.
A midpoint between those two ideas is that the mastermind is part of the in-universe audience watching the killing game, as in, a fictional character who is watching the real-to-them TV show that is Danganronpa: Despair Time. That could include Mai, a very notable character who is not one of the sixteen participants in the killing game.
Side note, I’ve seen some people fight back against the concept that Mai could be the mastermind with the idea that making the mysterious character the mastermind would be too obvious. While I sort of agree, I feel like we’re somewhat overestimating the extent to which Mai is obvious. It’s not like no casual viewers would know who she is, because her image was shown pretty obviously in Chapter 1. However, the name “Mai Akasaki” is only accessible by finding the hidden quotes on the optional associated website’s character profiles. To learn anything about her beyond that, you have to have the thought to type the name into the website URL, and then solve another puzzle just to see the bare bones of what’s there.
I’m not trying to assert any sort of dominance or superiority over DRDT fans on YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, or anything else, but from what I’ve gathered, Tumblr is the place you want to go for deep analysis and theories on DRDT (possibly because of Tumblr’s longer word count). Therefore, anything about DRDT that may seem like common knowledge on Tumblr may only be common knowledge to the fans who specifically bothered to come to the deep lore and crack theories website to find deep lore and crack theories. Essentially, this:
Sort of similar to what Gravity Falls did with the reveal of Bill Cipher back in 2012 (at least I think, I wasn’t actually in the Gravity Falls fandom at that time), I think it would be reasonable to plant clues about an overarching villain that people who want to analyze can analyze ahead of time, such that the villain’s arrival can come as a victory to the puzzle solvers and an exciting new development to the more casual viewers.
However, while I believe that Mai has an awesome setup that she could use to become the mastermind, whether she would actually fit the role is another question entirely. As I alluded to back in the first Mai paragraph, I’m rolling with the widely held (among theorizers) belief that the Unnamed Student in Xander and Min’s bonus episodes is supposed to be Mai. In those episodes, Mai seems to be incredibly caring, peppy, and sweet. She knows a ton of little heartwarming details about Min and Xander, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the same is shown to be true with Arei and whoever else’s bonus episodes in the future. Those hidden quotes on Mai’s profile also give off the impression that everyone in the cast really loves Mai– one could call them a “portrait of a person dearly loved,” perhaps.
While it’s possible that these scenes are supposed to highlight Mai’s social prowess and how much she can get people to fall in love with her, they… don’t really seem to be giving off those vibes. We see her thoughts in those bonus videos, and she really does seem to be dedicated to helping Min and Xander out. Mai’s change from someone who wanted nothing more than to help out her friends to someone who was willing to throw all of them into the killing game is something that would have to be explained, and it could be difficult to communicate that shift within the confines of bonus material, if Mai’s content is mostly kept there. There is the concept that Mai could have put her friends into a killing game to protect them somehow, which could be a way to avoid Mai’s character seemingly doing a total 180, but that rationale would need a lot of explanation too.
Otherwise, there’s also the problem that Mai is almost certainly dead. I won’t get super into it myself, because the amazing @1moreff-creator has already done a great job explaining why here (starts in the XI. God is Dead section). I don’t think I need to elaborate on why Mai being dead potentially before the killing game even began would be detrimental to the idea of her being the mastermind.
To be honest, I don’t know how much this idea actually makes sense. I think I’m personally more inclined to believe that Mai could be the mastermind just because I really don’t get mastermind vibes from pretty much anybody in the cast. If the mastermind simply wasn’t one of the members of the main cast, that could solve that issue, right…? Mai is very likely involved in the inception of the killing game somehow, so extending that role to one of being the mastermind isn’t the biggest stretch. However, her personality and living status do throw in some pretty big question marks, so I don’t think she should go any higher.
#3: Teruko Tawaki
Teruko was definitely the first character who I believed could be the mastermind after I watched the series for the first time. However, over time, I’ve sort of fallen off of the idea that she would be. Is that because I’m forgetting key details of the plot, or because I’m drifting closer to the truth…? Honestly, I have no idea.
Let’s start with the strongest “evidence” we have against Teruko, her motive secret: “How could I even select which secret to make your motive? Just about everything you’ve done in your life is worth killing for. The killing game is all your fault.” Although “the killing game [being] all [Teruko’s] fault” sounds pretty damning, there’s the obvious counterargument to be made that this isn’t even Teruko’s motive. In fact, the board currently shows it assigned to Xander. However, the majority of people (including myself) seem to believe that David was lying, and this secret is Teruko’s. So, let’s analyze under that assumption.
Teruko did admit to Veronika that she doesn’t know what secret could be used as her motive because there were so many. Even if that motive secret isn’t hers, that still means that Teruko has done a lot of shady stuff. Teruko’s decision to live on set forever could line up with the mastermind's goal of wanting to keep the cameras rolling as well. The very first scene of DRDT shows that someone who wants the killing game to end also wants Teruko dead, which implies that Teruko and the killing games are on the same side.
Teruko also has a prior history of concealing things about herself from us, the viewing audience. We knew basically nothing about her past or trust issues before Xander stabbed her, causing her sudden change in attitude to come as a blindside. Teruko apparently has a “risky” killing game-ending plan in mind for the end of the second Class Trial that she’s told us absolutely nothing about. And, most notably, Teruko clearly knows things about Mai that she’s decided not to share with viewers at home. (I do believe that Teruko genuinely can’t remember Mai’s name, but she does remember that Mai is similar to Xander and wanted to help, which is more than anything we would have known from the main text on our own).
Point is, DRDT is written in a way where we don’t hear a ton of Teruko’s thoughts. That would make it much easier for her to scheme something behind the scenes, as opposed to someone who we get a lot of emotional reactions or logical theorizing from. It’s actually kind of similar to the difference between Kaede and Shuichi’s styles of narration, as pointed out by ShortOneGaming in their impeccable v3 playthrough! I recommend watching their entire letsplay if you're in the mood for v3, but I found one time where they talked about this concept here. I’ll transcribe it for anyone who doesn’t want to open YouTube right now:
Gina: I do want to call– as my final sort of note– what’s interesting is that you called out immediately that Kaede’s narration was weird. That, it was always, like– dictation? Allison: Yes! Gina: It’s always, like, speaking directly to a person– Allison: Yes! Yes, I did say– It never really felt like actual internal monologue. Like, she never was expressing her thoughts or anything to us. I mean, yes, she was, but then there were those weird moments where she was, like… y’know, hiding it from the player, and… probably from herself, too, to some extent. Like, she was just like, “and then I had to go do this thing.” Um, and like, “we won’t really address how I’m feeling about this.” Gina: Yep. Allison: And at the same time, it hides it from the– the player. And that was very clever. Really good. I mean, her– yeah, her narration was always kind of weird. But, she did have moments where she had internal reflection.
Hopefully, you can see the comparison. By putting a greater emphasis on actions as opposed to what Teruko is feeling (“I kneeled down and touched his neck” after finding Ace’s presumed-dead body; “Everyone else started filtering in” when people walk into the Playground and find Arei’s corpse), it becomes much easier to have Teruko hide exactly what she knows or exactly how she feels about certain events. It’s actually the opposite of the kind of narration that Damon had (“I’m trapped in a killing game… with people who despise me. How… how did this happen? I just wanted to help… I wanted to make sure we didn’t trust each other too easily… and now I’m being treated like the bad guy” after the 0th Class Trial) that made me believe he wasn’t the mastermind!
So, do I think that Teruko would be a mastermind who remembers, or a mastermind who forgot? Well, I could kind of see it either way. Personally, I think that Teruko being a mastermind whose memories are intact is the more interesting version, and I do believe it’s possible. I also don’t understand why someone with as many trust issues as Teruko has would want to remove her own memories if it weren’t necessary. Then again, Teruko being an amnesiac mastermind could make up for some of the… issues that arise with her as a mastermind candidate.
What? She’s in third place, not first. Despite how long I’ve already talked about Teruko, there’s still more to say!
First, the problems if Teruko did retain her memories: why would she ask MonoTV about the mastermind’s identity when the two were alone? Why would she be creating a plan to end the killing game? Why would she pretend to not know who Mariabella Rosales was even though everyone else clearly knew?
And then, the problems that persist even if Teruko did lose her memories: where would Teruko have gotten the resources to plan a killing game of this caliber? Even if she had them, why would she use it on this? Assuming that secret is hers, why would she write that about herself in a plausibly public place (beyond the swapping, Arei looked over Whit’s shoulder)?
Oh yeah, back to that secret. Just because “the killing game is all [Teruko’s] fault” doesn’t mean that she’s the one who planned it. In fact, the wording sounds very accusatory and hostile for something that Teruko would have theoretically written to herself. From the first scene, we already know that there is a person or group of people somewhere who are out to get Teruko. It could make more sense if that entity is the mastermind, and wrote the secret to blame Teruko for whatever she did that got her on their bad side.
There’s probably more to be said, but hopefully you can see why I have so many mixed feelings about Teruko. I definitely think she’s one of the more likely mastermind candidates out there, but I still don’t know exactly how likely that is, y’know?
#2: Rose Lacroix
Once upon a time, a wise and powerful theory alchemist known only by the epithet @1moreff-creator postulated that Rose could be the mastermind of Despair Time, and then never elaborated on the idea at all. For centuries (a couple of weeks) the townsfolk (me) were baffled by these dark and mysterious ramblings. However, as seasons passed by, as travelers came and went, as the tide advanced to kiss the land before slinking back to its home once more– the idea… started making more and more sense?
Rose is a really smart character who has already shown her proficiency in Class Trials. In the first, she utilized her ability to perfectly capture the scene and her knowledge of chromatography. Although her talents haven’t been as useful so far in the second, she’s still managed to keep up with the conversation despite never looking at the scene of the crime. Thus, I can see why, from a writing perspective, DRDTdev would choose to make his mastermind the Ultimate Art Forger.
There’s also the angle that Rose is a criminal, and therefore could be willing to do illegal or immoral things. However, she does seem to be pretty remorseful about it, and she’s already been caught for her criminal behavior before. Unfortunately for her, her relationship with her saviors the Spurlings only makes her all the more suspicious. Even if Rose didn’t want to be the mastermind of a killing game, if the Spurlings forced her to do it, she might have not had a choice. (Xander is very against the Spurlings… Xander is bloody hands guy → stop the killing game → stop the Spurlings?)
I also like the angle of “the Spurlings forced her to do it” because of what I talked about back in Mai’s section– the concept of the mastermind not being among the students. In Rose’s case, you can get the best of both worlds. The entity behind the killing game, the Spurling Foundation, would be a group outside of the killing game for MonoTV to contact, but there would still be a student among the cast’s ranks to suspect and accuse come Chapter 6.
What’s the argument against Rose? Well, I would ask why Rose would want to put herself in this kind of situation, but if it was the Spurlings’ choice, then that explains that. You could say Rose has been too helpful to be a bad guy, but everything she’s done so far has been to help the students win a Class Trial. That keeps the killing game running, which keeps the show on. The biggest problem I’m thinking of at the moment is the notion that the Spurling Foundation would have chosen to make Rose’s secret about how her backstory led her into their clutches. However, the secret doesn’t actually acknowledge the Spurlings by name, and it also frames Rose’s crimes in a way that makes her look like a good person– the opposite of what someone would think of as a mastermind. The secret was also only intended for Rose’s eyes, so it could have functioned as more of a low-key threat to remind her why she needs to stay in line.
Shouldn’t all of this talk of Rose lacking agency make her a bad mastermind candidate, though? If a villain doesn’t even believe in their villainous motivations, the story could end on a really flat note, with the good guys steamrolling an evildoer who doesn’t really care. How are we supposed to reach a satisfying conclusion if the mastermind hardly has anything to be held accountable for?
Those are normally things I would argue, but as many have pointed out, Teruko isn’t a normal protagonist. Actually, I think that this kind of mastermind setup for Rose could be a great way to end Teruko’s arc about learning to trust other people. Rose is the mastermind, somebody who shouldn’t be trusted…! It would be so easy for Teruko to just crush this person who betrayed her into dust– Rose isn’t even putting up much of a fight. But in the end, Teruko will choose to be patient, and see that Rose never wanted to betray Teruko. Even if her actions wound up hurting Teruko and many others, she still deserves a second chance, or at least a second evaluation.
As you saw in the death predictions, I obviously believe that Rose has the potential to make a late game run, whether as a survivor or something else. Writing all of this out, I can see even more clearly why Rose just might be the DRDT mastermind. However, despite all that I wrote, the idea still feels kinda more like a fun AU than the actual truth to me…? So, I still think there’s one person whose chances I like slightly better.
#1: J Rosales
Whaddya know, J’s personal ??? tier catapulted her into the lead. It is probably true that my uncertainty about where she might land is contributing to me deeming her the mastermind– it’s a really weird space in the kill order, as someone who survives long enough to theoretically have a positive character arc while sometimes not being counted among the survivors at the end.
Part of why I put J this high is that I really like the theory of J being the mastermind along with her brother, Ryan. Sadly, I cannot find any of the original theories that postulated this idea to link to, so I’ll try my best to explain what I remember myself. Basically, some people found the scene in c1e4 where Rose doesn’t remember who J is suspicious. They combined this scene with J’s younger brother, Ryan, and J’s talent, the Ultimate Effects Artist, to suggest that J could be using her FX talents to disguise Ryan as herself and have them occasionally trade places. From this Q&A, one of the few things we know about Ryan is that he enjoys crossdressing, which furthers the idea that he could enjoy pretending to be J. Ryan is also (to my memory) the only DRDT character’s sibling whose name we have seen in the main text, which could indicate that he’s more important than Arei’s sisters, Levi’s brothers, or other potential siblings.
I think it’s a really fun idea that I would at the very least want to see come to fruition, regardless of how likely it is. If J was working with Ryan, you can once again repeat the argument that there’s both a mastermind for MonoTV to talk to outside the game and one to be accused within the game. The biggest issue with it is that I don’t know how Arturo wouldn’t see the differences between the two, even if Rose may have. Maybe if J and Ryan haven’t swapped since the Rosales secret got out, and won’t swap again until Arturo dies…? I don’t know, I’m getting ahead of myself.
The thing is, other than just being a unique and interesting concept, I’m not really sure what the point of having J and Ryan swap would be, in universe or out of it. (This is why I wish I could’ve found a link to the original theorist... :,( ) My best argument for in universe would be that there are some things that only J has the skill to do, her being the Ultimate Effects Artist while Ryan is not. However, they couldn’t just have Ryan be the one in the killing game full-time, because he’s too young and therefore wouldn’t have been part of the original Hope’s Peak class. Thus, there are some points in time where J needs to be working behind the scenes (like on the executions or something), and during those intervals, Ryan subs in. Metatextually, I guess it could show how every person in the entertainment industry can be cutthroat, or that every child of a celebrity is bound to get messed up about it somehow…?
Regardless, even if Ryan isn’t involved at all, there are plenty of reasons to suspect J on her own. Ultimate Effects Artist is a highly suspicious talent when it comes to the deception of a killing game (just check out how many people think J already used it to kill Arei), and in connecting her to Hollywood. J may claim to specialize in theater as opposed to television, but 1) she could have been lying, or 2) that could be true, but she’s making an exception this time. Even if she normally works in live theater, if you were a TV executive approached by the daughter of Mariabella Rosales who is also a Hope’s Peak Ultimate student in her own right, would you really turn her away…?
J’s custom weapon is also pretty suspicious. Even if it doesn’t seem to be able to trigger traps like the one used on Levi (though that could be another lie), I could still see it being pretty helpful for subtly operating MonoTV, turning on a monitor, starting an execution, or stuff like that. Charles essentially confirms that the custom weapons were in the students’ rooms since they all woke up, which means that J could have had this remote on her the entire time.
J’s relationships also seem potentially mastermind-y. Thus far, the two characters with which she’s been associated most are Arei and Arturo. Those two (at least, prior to Arei’s change of heart) have been so clearly villainous and hateful that J would obviously look like a nice person in comparison. Why is this helpful? It means that J can get away with doing more objectionable things without raising any huge red flags. If J is the mastermind, we can look back on her demolition of Arturo in the Chapter 2 Trial as a brief early glimpse into how cruel she can really be. But, for the moment, although it’s definitely memorable, many people (including myself) can react to it with a, “yeah, but based on what Arturo was doing to her, it’s kinda justified…” (Not saying it isn’t somewhat justified either way, just that it could also be something more.)
J could also have a range of motivations related to her hatred for her mom. Maybe she’s trying to turn people against the Rosales name to ruin Mariabella’s reputation. Maybe this killing game is a plan to finally have a big artistic success all on her own (or with Ryan) to prove her mom wrong. Maybe she thinks that a world so enamored with fame and glamor deserves to rot in a pit of despair. I don’t know which of these options would be the most likely, but I could see how any of them could be possible explanations for how J got to this point.
I think my biggest argument against J once again comes back to the “why”. I think that J has a lot of potential to be a good mastermind, but I don’t know if that carries over to being a good mastermind for Teruko. Unlike with Rose, I don’t have a good sense of how J being the mastermind would tie into a satisfying ending to Teruko’s trust arc.
@venus-is-thinking and I sometimes like to run randomized killing games as a fun writing exercise (randomize the cast, motives, and mastermind; see where it takes you), and we’ve generally found that the most compelling protagonist-mastermind duos either have the protagonist sharing the same worldview with the mastermind, or being the only person who believes the opposite.
If the protagonist starts with the same beliefs as the mastermind, then defeating the mastermind is a showcase of the protagonist’s development. Hajime and Izuru work as protagonist and mastermind because Izuru is the manifestation of Hajime’s belief that only talented people are important and can make an impact on the world. By renouncing Izuru, Hajime proves that he’s learned that anyone has the chance to change their future if they put in the effort.
If the protagonist has the opposite opinions from the mastermind, then it proves how crucial the protagonist is to the narrative because they are the only one who could deliver the critical message. A great example of this is Shuichi and Tsumugi. When Tsumugi tries to set up the conflict of “hope good, despair bad” that will keep the killing games going, all of the other surviving students fall for it. Shuichi being the only character who has spent the entire game learning the importance of balancing two extremes makes his callout of Tsumugi incredibly satisfying, and justifies the protagonist swap by proving that Shuichi is the only hero who could have saved this day.
That’s why I think that J would be a great mastermind for a protagonist who has issues with family or stardom, but might not be the best choice for a story with Teruko at the helm. Those are only my observations, though, so I’d understand if DRDTdev planned things differently.
And that is finally the end! Here’s the final tierlist I wound up working off of, which I fiddled with a TON while writing:
(It’s based off of Ocean Unknown’s tierlist!)
Since this has already gone on so long, I’ll try to keep the conclusion brief. Please take all of this with a grain of salt, as I wound up making a lot of claims about writing that don’t necessarily have the strongest foundation. I didn’t write anything that I think is blatantly false, obviously, but whether it’s good advice or not doesn’t necessarily mean that DRDTdev considered it. We may have different priorities in telling a compelling story. And, we’re less than two chapters in! Even the end of the Chapter 2 trial could throw a positive or negative wrench in any of these profiles.
Thank you so much for reading through this whole thing, and if you got through it and still have anything you want me to elaborate on further (a specific character, a specific theory, a specific aspect of fangan writing, etc), I would be happy to do so. I, uh, really hope that this answered the question that Anon asked, haha. Until next time… stay wary. There could be masterminds lurking about...!
