HAPPY STAR TREK DAY!

Lt. Commander Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, Chief Engineer.
It's easy to tell that this is a shot from the 3rd season as Scotty's hair is brushed back. Actor James Doohan couldn't stand that hair style.

Scotty X Reader – I can't be toyed with like that!

Pairing: Montgomery Scott x Reader
Summary: Scotty loved you since you stepped on the Enterprise. While arguing with a crewmate, he lies. He tells him that you are his girlfriend. What if you play this little game?
Warning: I don't own Star Trek and this picture.
I can't be toyed with like that!
You hadn’t been on the Enterprise for more than a few hours when you noticed the looks.
Whispers trailed you like shadows down the corridors, and your comm pinged more times in a day than it ever had during your academy years. The “new hot girl” on the flagship of the Federation. Classic. Expected. Boring.
You weren’t here to be eye candy for hormone-driven ensigns. You were here to work. You were an engineer. You belonged in the engine room, with your hands covered in grease.
You didn’t notice the way some officers stared. Or how you casually ruined a dozen crushes by simply existing in a boiler suit with grease on your cheek.
Montgomery Scott noticed. Of course he noticed.
You were his new technician. His direct report. His biggest threat to professionalism since someone suggested putting cup holders in the control deck.
The moment you stepped into Engineering, wrench in hand and sleeves rolled up, he was gone.
“Chief,” you said with a small smile, “reporting for duty.”
Scotty blinked.
Then blinked again.
"Aye, um… welcome aboard," he stammered, nearly walking into a coolant pipe. “Ye, uh, comfortable wi’ power converters? Course ye are. Why am I askin’?”
From that moment on, Scotty was in a constant state of quiet panic. Because not only were you brilliant, you were kind. Funny. Always laughing with the crew. Never flirting. Never trying. Just… being.
And he was doomed.
The truth was, Scotty had never believed in love at first sight until you walked into his engine room and introduced yourself like you hadn’t just upended his entire life in five seconds flat.
From then on, he was doomed.
He tried to be professional, tried to play it cool. He really did.
But every time you brushed past him in the narrow corridors of engineering, or bent over a console in that way that made his brain short-circuit, he’d be left staring into space like a broken replicator. And when you laughed? God help him. He’d nearly drop a warp core on his foot once.
Kirk noticed. Bones noticed. Hell, even Spock raised an eyebrow once when Scotty shorted out a panel because you had simply smiled at him.
“You’re pathetic,” Bones said one day in the mess. “Just ask her out. You’re the boss. Power move.”
“I can’t! That’s wildly inappropriate!” Scotty hissed, clutching his tray like it was a shield. “Besides, she deserves someone who doesn't talk to warp cores like they're people.”
Over the next few weeks, you grew closer, not like real friends, but more like colleagues with benefits. You even patched up a plasma conduit together once, shoulder to shoulder, and he thought he might die happy.
But you were... untouchable. Smart. Funny. Gorgeous. Way too good for him.
So he buried his feelings under friendship and caffeine and starship maintenance.
Then came the shore leave
Two weeks of rest in a glittering port city. Sunlight, drinks, music, and the first time the whole crew could cut loose.
You danced. Of course you danced. Barefoot in the sand with a glowing cocktail in hand, hair down and laughter in your throat.
Scotty had never wanted to be someone’s anything so badly in his life.
But he stayed back, beer in hand, watching from the edge. That is, until he overheard it.
Some drunken crewman, leaning at the bar, talking to his friend. “She’s hot, sure. But she’s all looks. Bet she’s cosying up to Scotty just to get a promotion. Or maybe she just likes leading him on.”
Scotty’s vision went red.
“Oi!” he snapped, storming up to them. “Ye better shut that gob o’ yers. Ye dinnae know a single thing about her!”
“Oh? You her boyfriend now or something?” the guy slurred.
Scotty opened his mouth and said the dumbest thing in his life.
“Aye. I am, actually.”
The words were out before his brain could catch up.
“In fact, we’ve been together for months. So why don’t you take your misogynistic nonsense and shove it, eh?”
The words echoed. People heard. People definitely heard.
When you heard the news the next morning, your brows rose.
“Scotty said what?”
Uhura smirked. “That you’re dating. Told the guy off. Real dramatic.”
You blinked.
And then, slowly, you smiled.
From then on, you leaned into the lie.
Hard.
You didn’t say anything.
That was the first sign something was off.
After the bar, after the rumor spread through the Enterprise faster than a warp jump, Scotty expected you to burst into engineering guns blazing. Maybe punch him in the face. Maybe report him. Maybe just look at him with disgust.
But you didn’t confront Scotty. Didn’t even mention it. Instead, you walked into Engineering like nothing was different… except:
“Morning, sweetheart,” you said breezily, dropping a coffee by his workstation.
He looked at it like it might explode.
“Th-thanks?”
You winked.
Then it got worse.
You called him “sweetheart” and “handsome” in front of everyone. Fixed his collar before meetings. Rested your hand on his shoulder when other officers passed.
You even added, one day, after teasing him relentlessly during diagnostics:
“I really do love a man in uniform. Lucky I’ve got one.”
Scotty was dying.
He knew it wasn’t real. He knew you were just messing with him. But every smile, every whisper, every feigned caress lit his hope on fire. And that hope was killing him.
When people saw you together, you didn’t correct them.
Worse, he didn’t either.
Once, you were walking down the corridor with him after a long shift. Nothing unusual. Until you saw two crewmen watching you. Without skipping a beat, you slipped your hand into his.
His heart damn near exploded.
The other day, you, Scotty, and Sulu stood in the turbolift together, just the three of you. The silence was polite, the hum of the ship low and steady.
Sulu glanced at the deck readout.
Scotty stared straight ahead like his life depended on it.
You, meanwhile, slid your hand to the edge of his belt, not grabbing, just... resting. Fingers feather-light. Innocent, if anyone asked. Completely devastating, if you were Scotty.
He stiffened.
Literally.
You tilted your head, all casual innocence, and said with a whisper-light voice, just loud enough for Sulu to hear:
“He’s got the most talented hands, you know.”
Sulu looked up. “Uh…”
Scotty made a strangled noise, somewhere between a cough and a malfunctioning conduit.
By the end of the week, Scotty was a wreck.
You were playing some kind of game. He just didn’t know the rules.
He couldn’t keep up. Then came the breaking point.
You’d just sauntered into the mess hall, walked right up to him, and casually swiped a bite of his dessert with his spoon.
“Can’t resist chocolate,” you said, lips curling. “Lucky you’re mine, huh?”
Half the room froze.
So did he.
You turned and left with a hum.
He sat there, spoon still in hand, staring after you like you’d just shoved him into warp speed without warning.
“Tell her, or I will,” Bones said from across the table.
“I’m dyin’ ” Scotty muttered. “This is actual death.”
That night, he showed up at your quarters, looking like he'd been hit by a transporter beam going sideways.
You opened the door in a tank top and loose pants, hair tied up, face fresh from the shower. His brain briefly stopped functioning.
“Scotty?” you asked, blinking. “Everything okay?”
He didn’t answer. He walked right in, pacing.
You shut the door. “...Do you want some tea or something?”
“Lass,” he said suddenly, voice cracking. “What... what are we doin’, eh?”
You blinked. “What?”
“This. This! Ye’re actin’ like we’re together, and everyone else thinks we are, and I—I dinnae know what the bloody hell’s goin’ on!”
You opened your mouth, but he wasn’t done.
“I lied. I know that. And it was stupid. I was drunk, and that idiot was talkin’ rubbish about ye, and I just... I wanted him t’stop. I wanted him t’think ye were mine. Because if I can’t have ye, then at least he couldna speak of ye like that.”
You swallowed, eyes wide.
“I like ye, alright? I’ve liked ye since the first day ye stepped into engineering. And I’ve tried—tried—t’be professional. I’m yer boss. I shouldna feel this way. But I do. And this—” he gestured around wildly, “—this game yer playin’? Pretendin’ like we’re together? It’s killin’ me. Because I know it’s no’ real, and I’m tired of pretendin’. I can’t be toyed wi’, lass. I can’t.”
Silence.
His breathing was ragged. His accent thickened to the point of almost being incomprehensible.
You walked toward him. Slowly. Close enough that he stepped back.
“Then why didn’t you say something sooner?” you asked.
“Because ye deserve better than a nervous wreck who can’t say two words without combustin’!”
You were smiling again. But it was different now. Warm. Real.
“Monty,” you said gently, using the nickname because it made his ears go red. “You can’t tell people we’re dating unless you mean it. Unless you ask me properly.”
He blinked. “Ye—you’d actually—?”
“Ask me,” you repeated. “Like a gentleman.”
He cleared his throat, eyes wide, hair a mess, hands fidgeting.
“Would ye maybe—go on a real date wi’ me, lass? Dinner. Conversation. Handholdin’. The works.”
You stepped even closer and kissed his cheek, whispering into his ear:
“Now you’re speaking my language.”
Part II here :)

Centibillionaire Elon Musk’s takeover of the former US Digital Service—now the United States DOGE Service—has been widely publicized and sanctioned by one of President Donald Trump’s many executive orders. But WIRED reporting shows that Musk’s influence extends even further, and into an even more consequential government agency.
Sources within the federal government tell WIRED that the highest ranks of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM)—essentially the human resources function for the entire federal government—are now controlled by people with connections to Musk and to the tech industry. Among them is a person who, according to an online résumé, was set to start college last fall.
Scott Kupor, a managing partner at the powerful investment firm Andreessen Horowitz, stands as Trump’s nominee to run the OPM. But already in place, according to sources, are a variety of people who seem ready to carry out Musk’s mission of cutting staff and disrupting the government.
Amanda Scales is, as has been reported, the new chief of staff at the OPM. She formerly worked in talent for xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence company, according to her LinkedIn. Before that, she was part of the talent and operations team at Human Capital, a venture firm with investments in the defense tech startup Anduril and the political betting platform Kalshi; before that, she worked for years at Uber. Her placement in this key role, experts believe, seems part of a broader pattern of the traditionally apolitical OPM being converted to use as a political tool.
“I don't think it's alarmist to say there's a much more sophisticated plan to monitor and enforce loyalty than there was in the first term,” says Don Moynihan, a professor of public policy at the University of Michigan.
Got a Tip?
Are you a current or former employee with the Office of Personnel Management or another government agency impacted by Elon Musk? We’d like to hear from you. Using a nonwork phone or computer, contact Vittoria Elliott at [email protected] or securely at velliott88.18 on Signal.
Sources say that Riccardo Biasini, formerly an engineer at Tesla and most recently director of operations for the Las Vegas Loop at the Boring Company, Musk’s tunnel-building operation, is also at the OPM as a senior adviser to the director. (Steve Davis, the CEO of the Boring Company, is rumored to be advising Musk on cuts to be made via DOGE and was integral in Musk’s gutting of Twitter, now X, after his takeover of the company in 2022.)
According to the same sources, other people at the top of the new OPM food chain include two people with apparent software engineering backgrounds, whom WIRED is not naming because of their ages. One, a senior adviser to the director, is a 21-year-old whose online résumé touts his work for Palantir, the government contractor and analytics firm cofounded by billionaire Peter Thiel, who is its chair. (The former CEO of PayPal and a longtime Musk associate, Thiel is a Trump supporter who helped bankroll the 2022 Senate campaign of his protégé, Vice President JD Vance.) The other, who reports directly to Scales, graduated from high school in 2024, according to a mirrored copy of an online résumé and his high school’s student magazine; he lists jobs as a camp counselor and a bicycle mechanic among his professional experiences, as well as a summer role at Neuralink, Musk’s brain-computer interface company.
Among the new highers-up at the OPM is Noah Peters, an attorney whose LinkedIn boasts of his work in litigation representing the National Rifle Association and who has written for right-wing outlets like the Daily Caller and the Federalist; he is also now a senior adviser to the director. According to metadata associated with a file on the OPM website, Peters authored a January 27 memo that went out under acting OPM director Charles Ezell’s name describing how the department would be implementing one of Trump’s executive orders, “Restoring Accountability to Policy-Influencing Positions Within the Federal Workforce.” This has to do with what’s sometimes known as Schedule F—a plan to recategorize many civil service jobs as political appointees, meaning they would be tied to the specific agenda of an administration rather than viewed as career government workers. The order would essentially allow for certain career civil servants to be removed in favor of Trump loyalists by classifying them as political appointees, a key part of the Project 2025 plan for remaking the government.
“I think on the tech side, the concern is potentially the use of AI to try and engage in large-scale searches of people's job descriptions to try and identify who would be identified for Schedule F reclassification,” says Moynihan.
Other top political appointees include McLaurine Pinover, a former communications director for Republican congressman Joe Wilson and deputy communications director for Republican congressman Michael McCaul, and Joanna Wischer, a Trump campaign speechwriter.
“OPM is not a very politicized organization,” says Steven Kelman, a professor emeritus at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. “My guess is that typically, in the past, there have been only one or maybe two political appointees in all of OPM. All the rest are career. So this seems like a very political heavy presence in an organization that is not very political.”
Another OPM memo, concerning the government’s new return-to-office mandate, appears, according to metadata, also to have been authored by someone other than Ezell: James Sherk, previously at the America First Policy Institute and author of an op-ed advocating for the president to be able to fire bureaucrats. Formerly a special assistant to the president during Trump’s first term, he is now a part of the White House Domestic Policy Council.
The return-to-office policy, according to the November Wall Street Journal op-ed authored by Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, is explicitly geared toward forcing the attrition of federal employees.
Last week, many federal workers received test emails from the email address [email protected]. In a lawsuit filed last night, plaintiffs allege that a new email list started by the Trump administration may be compromising the data of federal employees.
“At a broadest level, the concern is that technologists are playing a role to monitor employees and to target those who will be downsized,” says Moynihan. “It is difficult in the federal government to actually evaluate who is performing well or performing poorly. So doing it on some sort of mass automated scale where you think using some sort of data analysis or AI would automate that process, I think, is an invitation to make errors.”
Last week, federal employees across the government received emails encouraging them to turn in colleagues who they believed to be working on diversity, equity, inclusion, and access initiatives (DEIA) to the OPM via the email address [email protected].
“This reminded me,” says Kelman, “of the Soviet Stalinism of turning in your friends to the government.”
The OPM did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did the people whom sources say now sit atop the bureaucracy.
“I am not an alarmist person,” says Kelman. “I do think that some of the things being described here are very troubling.”

Recent discovery/theory me and a bunch of other jazzpunkers have been talking about.
Considering the little crab at the beach congratulates Polyblank on his birthday, and the dates on the guestbook, we thought it'd be silly if he WAS actually on vacation ON his birthday. Which we left somewhere along the lines of the 6th of May. Polyblank birthday yay! :^)
Something else we noticed was how some of the people in the book didn't add a date, but a symbol, such as the encrypted one (that I'll get into later), milktruck, Hunter S. Thompson and The Editor.
First of all, who are the people on the guestbook?
RAYMOND SCOTT -> In our world, Raymond Scott is considered a pioneer for electronica music! He was an American composer, band leader, pianist, record producer, and inventor of electronic instruments.
ENOCH LUSTIG -> Not a person from the 20th century I could find, though the name Enoch does appear in the Bible. Though I don't really think it's a biblical reference, the character of Enoch is known for living 365 years alongside God, and ascending to heaven in life.
GERD ALBERS -> Though somewhat hard to find information about him in English, Gerd Albers was a german architect and urbanist, prominent in the 20th century.
TILO LYMAN -> A possible reference to Theodore Lyman IV! He was an American physicist and spectroscopist known for important discoveries made regarding ultraviolet light, among others.
DAVID COCKERELL -> A direct reference to the real world person of the same name: David Cockerell! He is an electronics engineer and designer. Regarding this first bit, he's known to have designed countless synthesizer engines which were revolutionary for the electronica community!
JOSEF ARNTZ -> Found genuinely nothing about this guy. Mystery!
PROHÍAS -> A very exciting one!! Antonio Prohías was a Cuban-American cartoonist, known and recognized for many artworks! Among those, is Spy vs. Spy!
黒川 紀章 -> Kurokawa Kisho, or Kisho Kurokawa is a Japanese architect! Probably in here because he's the founder of the Metabolist movement! It was a radical Japanese avant-garde movement pursuing the merging and recycling of architecture styles within an Asian context. This is the Nakagin Capsule Tower (which Luis Hernandez loves so much) guy!
XAVIER ESPERANTO -> Probably a reference to Esperanto, the language! It is actually artificial, and it was devised in 1887 as an international medium of communication, based on roots from the chief European languages. Not too sure what the Xavier bit refers to.
JOHNY THE ROBOT -> The one under Xavier Esperanto's is Johny (with one N, yes) The Robot's! It's written down in the international telegraph alphabet, which you can see here. The complete message says "HELLO MY NAME IS JOHNY THE ROBOT". The telegraph was a huge thing in the 20th century. Meant to be short and meaningful, it started getting used during the war in the place of letters to communicate messages regarding enemy attacks and positions.
B. MARY -> Bloody Mary or, as you may know her, the Lady in Red! She confirms her name is indeed Mary in one of her unused voice lines, which you can find here.
MILKTRUCK -> Explanation not needed. Love you, milktruck.
HUNTER S. THOMPSON -> A direct reference to the real life Hunter S. Thompson! He was an important American journalist and author known for "Gonzo", a journalistic style in which the writer becomes a central figure and participant in the events of the narrative. In Jazzpunk, you can see him as the confused guy hanging around, lost at sea, asking Polyblank for a date at the bar, and being confused about Why Polyblank is in his room (when he breaks in with the master key).
THE EDITOR -> Needs no explanation.
NOW, A FUNNY LITTLE DETAIL:
THESE. As you can see, they all have something different in the 'DATE' section.
As for Xavier Esperanto's, I am not too sure.
Johny The Robot's is unintelligible.
milktruck's is an n/a. Does this mean the milktruck doesn't want to date. Not Applicable. milktruck doesn't date. We love aromantic rep.
Hunter S. Thompson is confused about being asked to date. If you can recall, from the times he's seen in game, he's always generally confused about everything.
Finally, The Editor has a money symbol. The Editor will go on a date for money. LOL! Fitting.

Explanation of Cuff Bands in Star Trek (The Original Series and Strange New Worlds)
Pips TNG onward explained + details of what each rank does
In TOS, they hadn’t figured out the pip system yet, so they did wrist bands to signify rank instead. It’s not nearly as straightforward as the pips, but once you get a hang of it, it helps tons. Plus they rarely call anyone by their rank in TOS, often going by mister or miss. This will mostly have close ups of TOS characters.
Now, Starfleet is based upon the U.S. Navy, so the names used are those. I’ve broken down the ranks in greater detail in the post linked above, so this one is just for knowing the ranking of each band and a brief explanation.
If you just want to know the look, there is a guide at the end for you. :)
—————
Description of the line looks for anyone who needs it: Dashed lines are long gold dashes perpendicular to the cuff, curving slightly upwards on one side and downwards on the other for each dash, like the shape of an eraser on its side. Solid lines are a straight gold band perpendicular to the cuff with another solid gold line wrapped around it. It almost looks like the two are intertwined. Bars are explained briefly later for Admirals, but they look like one straight gold band with two of the previously mentioned solid lines pressed against each side on the top and bottom with no space between.
For Strange New Worlds, replace any mention of a dashed line a thin straight line and any mention of a solid line as a thick straight line. I have not found any actual explanation for Admirals in SNW, but they have different Starfleet badges.
Cadet - Uniform Distinction
As far as I know we don’t actually meet any in TOS, but we do in SNW. In basically all Star Trek media, cadets wear red/all red uniforms. Cadets are people still in the Academy, not yet graduated. They can still serve on ships for training, however. Cadet Uhura is a lovely example of this.
Petty Officer - Insufficient Information
I am not sure if Petty Officers exist in TOS or appear in SNW, I searched for a while to find solid proof. The closest I could find for TOS was that maybe in The Motion Picture there was a Petty Officer with a triangle insignia, and that there was a character named Samno in Star Trek VI who was a PO and a Yeoman. If anyone can confirm/deny/offer anything, I will add it to this.
Yeoman
Yeoman are assistants in Starfleet. They’re only used in TOS, and their system is kind of strange. You can hold a ranked position while still being a Yeoman, shown through an unnamed character who had Junior Lieutenant markings on her sleeve while being addressed as a Yeoman. They generally are Ensigns, however.
Ensign - Blank sleeve
Ensigns have blank sleeves. I think this is probably for practicality for budget reasons in TOS, but most background actors are ensigns. Ensigns are graduates from the Academy and just anyone who hasn’t climbed the chain yet.
Lieutenants
Junior Lieutenant - Single dashed [•]
The only example I could find was a man named Joe Tormolen from the episode “The Naked Time” as the guy who dies at the start. Junior Lieutenants feature a singular dotted line on the cuffs.

Lieutenant - Single solid [~]
Most crew members we see are Lieutenants. Lieutenants are working consoles, navigating, going on away teams. Hikaru Sulu and Nyota Uhura in TOS.

Lieutenant Commander - Single dashed, single solid [•~]
Lieutenant Commanders are integral to running the ship. Heads of departments and the ones who run day to day activities aboard the ship. Chief Engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott was one of these.

Commander - Two solid [~~]
The First Officer on the ship. This is second in command, the right hand to the Captain. In TOS, our Commander Spock is also the head of the science department.

Captain - Single solid, single dashed, single solid [~•~]
Captains we all know. They are the head of the ship, the man who has to keep it level and realistic at all times, though our lovely Captain Kirk isn’t exactly known for level-headedness. He also has the green wraparound shirt that has the V shaped gold detailing by the neckline with a small gold line between.

Admirals
Admirals have an extra silly thing. They have a bar. It looks like if you smushed two of the solid bars together with a straight gold piece between. Admirals usually have different uniforms but they honestly change rather frequently. We meet Admirals few and far between in any ST show, but I’ve put them below nonetheless.
Here is a complete guide to each wrist cuff design in Starfleet’s early days, excluding Cadets, Petty Officers, and Ensigns.
A dot • indicates a dash line, a squiggle ~ indicates a solid line, and a hyphen - indicates a bar.
Junior Lieutenant - [•]
Lieutenant - [~]
Lieutenant Commander - [•~]
Commander - [~~]
Captain - [~•~]
Commodore/Rear Admiral (lower half) - [-]
Rear Admiral (upper half) - [~-]
Vice Admiral - [-~-]
Admiral - [~~-~]
Fleet Admiral - [~~-~~]
—————
Hopefully this helps you understand as much as it did me when I first figured it all out. Took a minute to get some research done. Let me know if anything is worded strangely or if the descriptions aren’t clear enough. I tried to be detailed with it at the start. If anyone has extra information or needs more, please comment or message me! I will answer/clarify to the best of my ability.
I love putting together this kind of thing so if anyone wants more lists like this, let me know. Enjoy.

"Forever in Space"
On January 8, 2024 an American moon lander Peregrine was launched into space, it was supposed to reach the moon’s surface. Besides scientific equipment on board Peregrine was biomatter (DNA and human remains) of 70 people, among them were those of the first “Star Trek” series’ actors. It was the creator of “Star Trek” Gene Roddenbury, along with his wife Majel Barrett who played nurse Chapel, as well as actors Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan and DeForest Kelley, who played Lt Uhura, Chief Engineer Scott and Dr McCoy respectively. Even though the mission wasn’t successful and the lander didn’t reach the moon, one could say that the actors and the creator of the series stayed in space forever.
With my great love❤️

(The former CEO of PayPal and a longtime Musk associate, Thiel is a Trump supporter who helped bankroll the 2022 Senate campaign of his protégé, Vice President JD Vance.) The other, who reports directly to Scales, graduated from high school in 2024, according to a mirrored copy of an online résumé and his high school’s student magazine; he lists jobs as a camp counselor and a bicycle mechanic among his professional experiences, as well as a summer role at Neuralink, Musk’s brain-computer interface company.

June of Doom 2025 Day 7; @juneofdoom
7. “Watch out!”
| Explosion | Crush Injury | Trap |
~
When all hell broke loose in engineering, Scotty didn't know where to help first. So many crew members were calling for him as they tried to solve the problems the attack was causing everywhere.
Engines were exploding, systems were crashing and there was so much to do that the chief engineer had to do his best not to lose track.
He ran from one corner to the next, shouting orders across the room and taking care of the most important tasks himself. Keenser stood by his side as best he could and the Scotsman knew that he could rely on his Roylan friend. That was the only reason he allowed himself to run to the nearest intercom to inform the captain about the current status of the ship. And, of course, to get information about the current situation in the battle.
"Engine room to bridge! Bridge, come in!"
"Bridge is listening, Mr. Scott."
Scotty frowned. It wasn't Kirk's voice that answered him, but Spock's.
"Mr. Spock? Where's the captain?" Scott asked, confused, and the Vulcan explained what had happened. Jim had said that he couldn't just sit idly in his chair and had therefore made his way to the engine room to help.
The words brought back bad memories for Scotty. Memories of how the captain had died once before to save the ship. Memories of a pale, dead body that the chief engineer had to drag out of the decontamination chamber. He shuddered at the thoughts before shaking his head and refocusing. He didn't have time to pause!
"All hell is breaking loose down here and ... we can use all the help we can get, I suppose. What's the situation up there? Is this bloody battle about to end?"
"Negative, Mr. Scott. The battle will continue for another forty minutes, I estimate."
Scotty groaned and let out a Gaelic curse. Another forty minutes in which he and his people had to keep everything going. Forty more minutes in which who knows what could happen.
"Scotty!"
A familiar voice sounded from nearby and Scott jerked his head around. He saw Jim running towards him. And he saw something about Jim that he didn't like at all.
"Captain! Watch out!"
Without really thinking about it, Scotty rushed as fast as he could to his captain and pushed him roughly out of the way.
Only to be buried under a falling piece of debris himself. The Scotsman screamed in pain as the piece of metal crushed his entire lower body beneath it. He lay prone, unable to move.
Jim knelt down in front of him, his arms raised as if he thought he could lift the huge piece of metal with his bare hands alone. He shook his head desperately.
"Scotty! Oh, shit! No, no, no. I didn't mean to–"
"Get help, ye bloody eejit!"
Scotty didn't want to yell at his captain – much less insult him – but the pain and adrenaline were making his blood boil.
Immediately Kirk was on his feet, nodding wildly. He looked around and then took off running.
"O-of course! I will. Hey! We need help here!"
Scotty closed his eyes and tried to breathe away the pain. He just had to concentrate on breathing, just like his mom had taught him when he was a wee lad.
Breathe in. Breathe out.
Breathe in. Breathe out.
But no matter how often he told himself everything would be okay, the pain remained unbearable.
Nearby, he heard the intercom. Spock asked for him several times, demanding information about what was going on.
Scott smiled bitterly. He really would have loved to answer, but he wouldn't be able to move a single inch.
"Here he is! We've got to get this thing off him somehow." Jim's voice still had a slight tremor in it, but the words sounded very much like orders again.
"T-that's not so easy, sir."
"We have to cut it to size first and–"
"Then stop talking and do that! Mr. Scott needs to get to sickbay as fast as possible!" Kirk raised his voice and the crew members reacted immediately. They took all the necessary steps while the captain knelt down next to his chief engineer again.
"I'm so damn sorry, Scotty. I should have been more careful."
Scott laughed weakly. He could feel the pain threatening to overwhelm him. Not much longer and he would lose consciousness.
"That's why the captain belongs on the bridge and not in the engine room," he slurred.
The memories of Jim's death surfaced before his eyes once more and Scotty sighed.
At least this time he had protected his captain. The engine room was his world. Down here he was responsible for the ship and the crew. It was his area of responsibility. And for that very reason, it had been his duty to save Kirk.
"I was just trying to help," Jim mumbled, almost like a scolded little child.
Scotty chuckled softly and he reached out and patted the captain's arm.
"Then help from yer captain's seat."
He heard Spock's voice once more, emphatically calm wanting to know what was going on, and groaned.
"And tell yer first officer to shut up, please."
Jim laughed weakly and nodded.
"I will. I'll tell him what's going on and then I'll call Bones."
With that, the captain stood up and walked over to the intercom. Scotty could still hear him talking to Spock, then the roar of blood in his ears grew louder and it wasn't long before he lost consciousness. But he knew he could rely on his crew.
They would get him free and then McCoy would patch him up. Everything would be all right.
