Circadian clocks, which drive circadian rhythms, are entwined with many essential systems in living things including plants, fungi, insects, and even humans. Because of this, disruptions to our circadian clocks are linked to higher disease rates in humans, including certain cancers and autoimmune diseases. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Jennifer Hurley, Ph.D., Richard Baruch M.D. Career Development Chair and Associate Department Head of Biological Sciences, has dedicated her career to understanding the mechanisms that allow our circadian clocks to keep time. "As proteins are the building blocks of life, it's important to gain a fundamental understanding of how these proteins work together," said Hurley. "Knowing how proteins interact can teach us how an organism will behave, and can also give us the opportunity to alter that behavior."

A.M. to P.M. - The Best Time to Write
Recently, a friend told me he gets up and writes before work. This doesn’t sound too extraordinary as a standalone fact. But he works at 5:30 in the morning. Now, I don’t know about you, but doing anything requiring any modicum of concentration at 4AM is simply out of the question for me. He told me he likes it when the world is quiet. I made a sound of agreement, but I know the REASON the…

This has nothing to do with anything but I'm in the middle of a houseplant fixation and I'm having a lot of fun. I've always had indoor plants, sometimes more, sometimes less, but it's starting to feel like I might've finally figured out some of the more advanced stuff, like personalized substrate mixes, different pot types, fertilization, growth lights and humidity.
My plants are doing really well now! I've repotted a few, trimmed the ones that took damage during the winter (or got hit by a thrips infestation late last year) and propped the cuttings, and they're putting out roots! I've never tried propagating anything before, it's exciting times. I'm going to plant them soon, maybe later this week.
Every morning and every night I do a little routine plant tour, simultaneously marveling at them and endlessly worrying about whether they're happy and thriving or not. They're making so many big, shiny new leaves right now and it's driving me to the brink of tears.
Very stressful but also tremendously rewarding. Just felt like sharing, since I've been mostly inactive or focused on complaining about health woes lately.
#personal nonsenseposting#I admire calatheas and marantas in particular and I've killed so many of them over the years#but all in my current collection made it through last winter! usually I lose at least one or two#and they're getting really lush and green and healthy looking now that it's growth season#honestly I'm really proud of them#I don't know how to explain this but calatheas have particularly active circadian rhythms#they move their leaves up and down in response to amount if light they're getting I think?#so sometimes if it's really quiet I get spooked by the soft squeaks and rustling they make when the foliage rubs together#love that for them#they get extra points for the unexpected leaf noises#feels good having some hobbies and interests that aren't related to your Main Thing™ I think#work with a completely different set of braincells for a change#get that varied enrichment
