Lupin’s reaction to the news of his spouse being pregnant would be simply elation. His natural optimism and charisma would shine through, but beneath that, there would also be a deep sense of responsibility.

When his spouse first told him the news, they would probably do so in a moment of quiet, perhaps after a long day of one of their usual adventures. Lupin would listen intently, his golden eyes locked on theirs, a soft smile tugging at his lips as they nervously revealed the truth.

“I’m pregnant.”

For a moment, Lupin would freeze. His sharp mind, always so quick to calculate and plan, would stumble over the enormity of those two simple words. A heartbeat passed, then two, before his face split into an impossibly wide grin.

“Mon amour,” he’d say softly, pulling them into his arms with a gentle but secure embrace. “You’re serious?”

Once he received the confirming nod, his laughter would bubble up, light and full of joy. He would sweep them off their feet, spinning them in a playful twirl before settling them back on the ground.

“This is incredible!” Lupin would exclaim, practically glowing with excitement. “We’re going to be parents! Imagine it—a child with your grace and my… irresistible charm.” He’d wink, trying to lighten any lingering nerves they might have.

But once the initial excitement settled, Lupin’s expression would turn more thoughtful. He’d pull them close again, his arms around their waist, forehead resting gently against theirs. “You know,” he’d murmur softly, “I’ve never had a family of my own. Not in the traditional sense. But the idea of creating one with you… it’s the greatest treasure I could ever dream of.”

Still, there would be a flicker of uncertainty in him, though he would do his best to hide it. Lupin had always led a dangerous life—a life of heists, cunning, and outwitting enemies at every turn. The thought of bringing a child into that world, of the dangers that could one day threaten his family, would weigh on him. He wouldn’t voice these fears right away, not wanting to dampen the joy of the moment.

Instead, he would make a vow in his heart. He would do everything in his power to keep them safe—both his spouse and their unborn child. For Lupin, this was not just a new chapter of his life; it was his most important heist yet. The stakes were higher than they’d ever been before, and he would do whatever it took to ensure that their family was protected.

With a renewed sense of purpose, Lupin would flash his trademark smile and kiss his spouse on the forehead. “We’re in this together, and I promise you—I will be the best father this child could ever ask for.”

And with that, his mind would already be racing ahead, planning for their future with the same meticulous care he applied to every heist. Only this time, the treasure at stake was his family.

Revisiting Code: Realize

I have been severely emotionally and creatively stuck for a long while, and just recently settled on revisiting older media that is beloved to me, especially games, because of the way the interactive narrative speaks to me, but also because its historically what has gotten me writing. While one friends suggestion was Ace Attorney, which is absolutely in queue to be re-experienced, I got the more desperate urge to revisit Code: Realize first. As an early adopter of the english localized otome (my copy of Sweet Fuse as testament), this one has long been my gold standard, and it is also the perfect narrative to help me dislodge some back up.

I thought it might be nice to keep a small journal as I play each route to sort of document what makes it so special, and help me process why it is so personally beloved. First, of course, I must replay and look at the common route. I will come back to this post with those thoughts as I go, but to start I will leave the initial premise below.

First, the premise of the game is simple, yet possesses arrangements to introduce a lot of narrative and character complexities. It is set in Victorian-era London, but with a fantasy steampunk flavor. We follow Cardia Beckford, and our introduction to her is... whoof. She is alone, and since her father left her, she has always been alone.

The opening of the game is her lamenting about who and what she is... why she even exists... because as we shortly find out, her father has told her that because he loves her, he must never let her know love. Because she is a monster. It is a painful opening as we see her shut away in a dilapidated home, her room littered with dolls and toys as she sits curled up, head to her knees, only lifting it when some of Queen Victoria's royal guard, sent to apprehend her, enter. They speculate over if she could be the monster, until one of their dogs becomes aggravated by the situation and bites her... only for her blood, and the touch of her skin, to gruesomely kill it.

Cardia tried to stop this, and thus does the commander of the guard realize she is not a monster by intent, only by her making. She is poisonous to her core, the touch of her skin enough to burn and melt another, and if that touch is prolonged, it surely will kill them. She does not know why she is like this, only that she always has been, and because of that she welcomes being taken... welcomes what she believes is certain death. Being alone as long as she has been, longing for touch the whole time and knowing she can never have it, it would be much easier that way.

But gentleman thief and master of disguise Arsène Lupin isn't about to let that happen. He shows up in proper grand flair to whisk Cardia away from the guard, from her certain demise, because he wishes to steal her heart... literally. But gentleman that he is, he will not take it off her without granting her a wish in return, and there is one thing she wants, which she asks him for quite plainly. "I want to... touch you. I want to feel you... your warmth."

He quickly understands. She has never touched another before, believes she never will as she asks if it is impossible... only for him to confidently promise he will grant this wish to her.

That is how we open the game, and boy do we still a hell of a common route to get through (per my memories, it is quite long!) but I am beyond excited. The common route will get it's own post but as a small teaser:

After the opening credits play, it opens on a scene of Cardia lamenting on how her father set rules for her to never find love, and to never leave their home until he returned for her or ruin and heartbreak will surely follow. Cardia reveals she broke this rule once, and she destroyed someone who loved her, though before we delve into this further, she remarks on the feeling of a morning breeze, and the feeling of sunshine before Lupin offers her a simple breakfast of egg and toast.

This little moment already gives us a great look at Cardia, her lamenting, but also how she is surprised by the breakfast, and catalogues to Lupin how while she can eat... it basically melts to nothing right away, but at least she can taste it, and it tastes good. We get little details of how she has to live, what it means to be the monster she is, and how she feels in a world she isn't meant for. It sets us up to feel for her, to care for her, with even more evocative moments like this to come.

Longing for touch... I felt that deeply when I first played this game, and in a post-pandemic world it resonates even deeper. I am excited to open this world of the game back up, just as well the world within me it once opened up.

One last element: please look at how beautiful this games art and design is... Cardia Beckford you will always be famous.

I'd love to recommend Code Realize: Guardian of Rebirth to you. It's an otome series and while there is one route that's considered the "true" or "canon" route, the chemistry between all the characters make for a prime polycule AND in one of the fandiscs, you can see stories where the protagonist goes on dates with two of the LIs at the same time! It's just shy of being actually canon but it's canon in my heart.

Oh, I played a little bit of Code Realize a while back! I never made it onto any specific route I don't think but I remember liking Van and Impey best lol.

It makes me happy to hear about the double dates, that sounds so cute!

Restricted to an abandoned mansion on the outskirts of London in fulfillment of a promise to her father, lonely Cardia lives day to day isolated from the world. Her body carries a deadly poison that rots or melts anything her skin touches, prompting the locals to call her a “monster.” Her last conversation with her father two years ago, telling her to stay out of sight and never fall in love, is the furthest back she can remember. One day, her quiet solitude is interrupted as the Royal Guards break in to capture her. It is then that Cardia meets Arsène Lupin, a chivalrous thief, who helps her escape the soldiers’ clutches. She soon finds herself on a journey with Lupin to locate her father, who holds the answers to her mysterious condition. The two are soon joined by four more interesting and handsome gentlemen…

He drinks wine with your by the waters edge, or has picnics with your in the woods, he will leave flowers on the table for you that he picks every day or he will take you out on the town for the night. Everything he does he goes all out even if he has to steal it to make it yours.

If he has to grab your hand and run in times where you could come to harm, stand in front of you to fight for your honor and life he will, as he will pick you up and carry you when all else fails. He is your protector and will die trying to make sure your safe.

He will always pull you close because he hates gaps between you and him. So pulling you into him for his body heat to touch every inch of you is what he does often. He will carry you when needed and hold you in his arms next to his chest sharing his heart beat beating in your ear letting you know how much he loves and cares for you.

He Has Sex Appeal

He is sexy without even trying. Whether jsut getting out of the shower or at the beach or even when he is in his masked outfit he has a sex appeal that is hard not to notice. His eyes undress you even before you even know it.

He loves to hold you but what he loves even more is to kiss you. He loves to share so many types of kisses with you whether its passionate or a peck even kiss on the head or cheek all tell you how he feels for you without second guessing.

He is the dashing gentleman thief there is no way that he isn't smooth enough to tell you everything you ever wanted a man to say. He will sweep you off your feet, tell you how he feels for you, and have you falling before you know it. Stealing your heart is his greatest achievement.

Any kind of holiday or celebration that lets him dress up and take you out in a fancy dress he is all for. Sometimes he might steal his way into events but thats ok he does it all for you so he can make you happy by showing you things you may have never seen. Is is a gift giver at christmas and even loves kissing you under the mistletoe.

Prologue

Finally, I can play the game! After weeks of waiting, here I am.

I already know the cast but I wasn't spoiled, I know nothing of the story and the roads. I'll play with my heart and without help (for the first game at least). So, if you're up to read my first impressions playing this otome game (for the first time in forever~), here we go!

Why can't I see them? I know their voice, I know who they are, no suspens here... Let me see them pretty please~

So, talking about Finis like it was a big mystery but guys, he's credited in the beginning of the game! Kaji Yuki, I know it's you!

Introduction of Cardia. Okay, I liked her introduction and I have to say I'm intrigued... it's a mix for me (for now) between Yui from Diabolik Lovers and Yui from Kamigami no Asobi... I think I prefered Cardia introduction over the two Yui's...

I really want to know more about her background. A little of fantastic, a lot of mystery, great reverse harem, it's a good beginning!

And what about that silhouette outside of the mansion? Obviously it's the main protagonist 👀

Funny moment with the double Leonhardt voices I found it fun.

But... "I want to touch you... I want to feel your warmth..."

Okay Cardia, but it's only prologue sweetie... too soon maybe? But at least, Arsène agrees, I guess.
