When you find a game-breaking error on the day you want to release your update...

I fixed it. Technically, I fixed it.

I fixed it by redoing an entire segment. The update should still be up today barring disasters. I'm going to check on some things, run a test, and then I'll make a new post when the update is live. And then I'm going to take a nap.

I've never had an error like this before because there was no actual error message. Text in the middle of a passage just came to a full stop. Nothing changed it. I ended up taking out a chunk of code for a variable and that magically fixed it. So, something in the way I first set those variables I think is screwed up. It was just flavor text so I replaced it with a different seasoning, lol.

It's worked out for the best I think. I was going to release this last night and then decided I wanted to extend the ending just a bit. I spent too much time on that, of course, but had I not done it, I may have not caught this error prior. ^_^

the text in ascii when imported from the txt file: R\xc3\xbah

the exact same text in ascii copy and pasted as a string: R\xfah

The fact that the ascii versions are different is why python claims they're not the same text even tho they are the exact same text.

Good news is I can turn the first one into the second by encoding it as latin1 and decoding it as utf8, and I can turn the second into the first by encoding in utf8 and decoding it as latin1.

But I don't want to turn them into each other.

I want to turn them both into the same thing using the same procedure for both!

I have scoured slackoverflow for answers and found little of it to be useful. Not even unicodedata.normalize helps. It does nothing.

I think that if I have a list of strings and I want to know if a certain string is in that list, it shouldn't matter if the string I'm looking for has an accented letter. It should just work.
