Console game developers can get in trouble with the console vendors for failing to patch known show-stopping bugs, which is a problem for me because I think you shouldn't be required to fix bugs that are objectively funny. The game crashes if you manage to die under very specific, improbable circumstances? That's built-in commentary.

The game I've been working on for almost two years is now in open beta if you wanna try it out!!

Boom Boom Hamster Doom is a VR game about commanding teams of hamsters fighting across a completely destructible island. If you want an X-meets-Y description, it's much like Worms, but at tabletop scale. It's toyetic as hell - you lead them around on leashes with your little crab claw, and pull back like a catapult to aim missiles or boxing gloves, throw an airstrike like a paper plane, or fly them around in little jetpacks.

I've worked on pretty much every corner of this game - in particular, shading, animation, UI, gameplay and the procedural generation of the islands. And like, you know me, I want to tell you all about it. I'm writing a whole lot more diving into how just about every aspect of the game was built, from voxel meshing and networked physics to ocean rendering, bot AI, and obscure DOTS optimisation headaches... which will all be appearing right here. I'll keep you updated.
We'll be moving into full early-access soon, but you can already jump in the beta here, and play against other people or bots in the forest and ice biomes. You'll need to have a Quest 2 or Quest 3 headset - but if you have another headset, don't worry, we are planning on a Steam release down the line. I'll keep you posted.
All feedback is extremely welcome! I'm nervous/proud/excited for the game to finally see the light of day.

New skill acquired: animation!
A simple turntable for Eve. I had to do this in an image sequence, turn down the pixel size by a lot and overall quality, and it still took five hours and some change to do, but y'know what? I'm proud of myself for getting it done. It's another thing I can say I'm capable of.
#EVE I COMMAND YOU TO ROTATE!#did NOT realize those lights would show up in the render#doing all this has given me an even greater appreciation for animators. which is saying something cuz I already knew the work they put in#if only I had a stronger computer#I rendered the animation in Krita#Tears of Xivo#Eve ToX#animation#3d art#game development#indie dev#indie games#indie game#original character#digital art

'RollerCoaster Tycoon 3'
[PC] [AUSTRALIA] [MAGAZINE] [2004]
"Making a sequel to a hit game is tricky business. If you simply rehash the original, fans will complain that it's more of the same. But if you change too much, you risk losing what made the original special. The RollerCoaster Tycoon series stands as good evidence of these potential pitfalls. The first game quietly debuted in 1999, only to become a huge success that spawned countless imitators. But the series stumbled with RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, which was deemed by fans to be too much like the first game. That brings us to RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, the newest game in the series. In many ways, RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 is the sequel we've been waiting for--the one that updates the gameplay and graphics to modern-day standards. Yet while RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 delivers on those promises, its potential is undermined by some glaring bugs." ~Jason Ocampo, Gamespot

currently thinking about Ace being a tech nerd in modern au. idk whyyy but it feels so right to me somehow?? i think he'd really enjoy programming and would probably choose to do stuff in (indie) game developers it just feels very him to me... also the idea of him being veryyyy frustrated by people being stupid as fuck about tech is real and funny. sporty outdoorsy guy who is super into working with tech. yea.
#I DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT TECH/IT STUFF BTW#i just think it's hot. idk. idk.#and somehowwww i think it fits him. but maybe thats just desire. i dont care.#anyways. consider ace being an indie game developer becuz it is his passion. consider ace doing computer repair as a side gig.#consider ace working at a gas station for his actual main job.#that is my modern au ace truth#portgas d ace#one piece#ace op#ace one piece

PLEASE DO NOT TAG AS YOUR OWN OC OR PAIRING.
Nathan and Ruben share a bond more powerful than most; mutual understanding through past experiences no one should ever have to go through, and through past actions so horrible they cannot be spoken of. Their grief and the blood on their hands binds them to the STEM technology they created, which has alienated them from the rest of the world— but they give each other the comfort they have both longed for so desperately for years, and that is all they need. They are each other's counterpart; you cannot imagine one without the other, like two sides of the same coin. Through their pain, their grief, their desire, and their regret, they have become one.

#tew#edit:nathan#nuclearocs#nuclearedits#so much shame in my body but still used my taglist but um let me know if you want to be excluded from oc/ship web weaves#just really wanted to share this one because i'm very proud of it and i want it on my blog. so. :]#recognition of the self through the other + wanting so desperately for the other to be deserving of a second chance#because if there is hope for them than there is hope for you etc etc and so on. that's the core of their dynamic i think#they understand each other on such a fundamental level that no one else comes close to because they are in so many ways the same#like how in in the first game leslie could sync up with ru/vik and all that? nathan would be a VERY good candidate for that as well#and it makes me insane!! and then the added layer of nathan being lead developer of mobius' new and improved STEM system#which makes him the same as ru/vik AGAIN but in like. the way that they're both men of [computer] science#and there's the fact they both have a dead sister. they both killed their parents. they were both mobius playthings for YEARS#and they've happily killed and tortured during all of it. they're angry they're out for revenge they're completely disconnected from#the normal human experience and they're working with what they have. and then after all of that is over then what is left?#their story focuses on them picking up all the pieces. everything that's still salvageable at least. and try to start over in a way#they cannot be forgiven for what they've done but they can move on from the past and do different in the future#there's still things left undone and left unsaid... in my canon at least. i know there's not gonna be any more games. it's fine#anyway they end up going to therapy and then they get better they're not a doomed couple they just like being dramatic#if you read all of this we can get married tomorrow if you'd like

I fully understand that the problem is corporate-mandated crunch time, not "programmers being lazy", but at some point it became acceptable for games to spawn a popup on start scolding you for not installing it on an SSD rather than implementing a texture caching pipeline, and I don't care for that at all.

in a lot of ways i feel like i should have gotten a different degree because i feel as an adult my interests are much more creatively driven. but the culture insists that you decide your fate at age 17-19 and then have to stick with it for the rest of your life
#i have a software engineering degree#i was going to actually go for game development but my mom convinced me to go broader bc she thought i could get pigeonholed and not find a#job. and i mean she’s probably right. and the game dev industry is Terrible#but i actually would have in retrospect gone for a third option. something either heavily database related OR#something that has nothing to do with computers at all. like a degree that would get me a job at a zoo or aquarium#i feel like i’d get more fulfillment out of that. but perhaps i am just feeling meh because i feel like#so behind on knowledge in tech compared to my coworkers because i don’t really have any outside of work interest in doing this kind of thing#for the most part. like maybe if i worked less than 40 hours a week i would#but i already spend so much time sitting at my desk that it’s like the last thing i want to do when i am off work#i much rather spend time with my gf and my dog. go on walks. do crafts.#but it feels sometimes like in tech you have to be obsessed with it and do it 24/7. like the culture is so. This Is Your Life#but to me it is Just A Job. and i feel like you’re kind of punished for that in this industry

This picture contains 4 GB of data.
Back in the 1930s computers were gaint machines, they worked on "punch card programing" and was mainly used to solve complex math problems, it wouldn't be until the 1950s that the one of the first "hard drive"s were invented by ERA, then called the "mag drum drive", IBM than brought ERA and refined the technology further.
This picture represents 4GB of data stored in punch card format, each row is 15 pallets long, stacked 2 pallets high, 45 boxes to a pallet, 2000 punch cards to a box, each card held 80 characters making this picture represent 4.3 billion characters of data.
Oh how far we've come in 93 years..
