i really wanted to lean into a generally vintage look for her, but none of the hair i wanted to use would let her have black roots (since she had black hair before it turned gray in ts2, according to her wiki page). r.i.p.
minor inconvenience aside, she's probably the sim i've had the most fun making over so far! love u, aggie 🖤

It was never a common species, the blue-grey warbler that locals called the jack pine bird. A belated discovery among American birds, it was undescribed by science until the mid 19th century—and then, known only on the basis of a single specimen. The bird's wintering grounds in the Caribbean would eventually fulfill the demands of collectors and museums, but the intricacies of its lifecycle remained a mystery for decades, the first nest only found in 1903. As the already-rare bird became rarer, people could only guess at why. There were just so few birds to look for, their breeding habitat inscrutable amidst the dense, impassable woodland of their Midwestern home. The one clue was the most apparent thing about the bird: its affinity with the jack pine (Pinus banksiana).
Over time, more nests were found—not in the eponymous trees, as might be expected for a songbird, but on the ground at their feet. Data points converged, leading to the realization that not only did the bird nest almost exclusively in proximity to the scrubby pines, but only utilized trees that fell within a specific range: new growth, between five and fifteen feet tall, with branches that swept shelteringly close to the ground. Subsequently, it would be noticed that the greatest volume of specimen collection for the bird had corresponded with years in which historically significant wildfires had impacted the Midwest—fires that, for decades afterwards, had been staunchly suppressed. The pieces fell into place, like jack pine seeds, whose cones open only under the heat of a blaze.
With the bird's total population having dwindled to the low hundreds, a program of prescribed burns, clearcutting, and replanting was instituted, with many acres of land purchased and devoted to the preservation and maintenance of suitable breeding habitat. Concurrently, efforts were made to protect the vulnerable bird against brood parasitism by the brown-headed cowbird.
When the first federal list of protected species was put forward in 1966, the name of the small grey warbler was inscribed beside birds such as the Kauai ʻōʻō and the Dusky Seaside Sparrow.
The ʻōʻō, last of the genus Moho, would be removed from the list in 2023 due to extinction, after thirty-six years without a sighting.
The endling Dusky Seaside Sparrow, a male named Orange Band, would die of old age in captivity in 1987, with his species being delisted three years later.
in 2019, fifty-two years after the creation of the Endangered Species Protection Act, the name of Kirtland's warbler, too, was removed from the list: it had been determined that, with a population now numbering nearly 5000, the jack pine bird could be considered safely stable.
Conservationists continue to work to preserve the breeding habitat of Kirtland's Warbler in the midwestern US, as well as its winter roosts in the Bahamas and neighboring islands (though selective logging has replaced actual burning in recent years, due to the dangers posed by unpredictable fires). It's the kind of effort that it takes to undo the damage we've caused to the planet and its creatures—the kind of hope that we need, to not give up on them, or on ourselves.
-
The title of this piece is Prescribed Burn (Kirtland's Warbler). It is traditional gouache on 18x24" watercolor paper, and is part of my series Conservation Pieces, which focuses on efforts made to save critically endangered birds from extinction.

still not very familiar with asks, but could I request Blade, Jing Yuan, Dan Heng, Aventurine and Dr. Ratio x ghost!reader who came back after dying like ‘uh hey so crazy story’?
maybe they knew eachother before they died; or maybe not and reader just floats around until they find a person that can see them and tries to convince them to either A. Help them get back to resting in peace or B. Help bring them back to life (somehow) whichever works
Jing Yuan, Dan Heng, and Dr. Veritas Ratio [Seperate] w/ a Ghost!Reader
[CW]: [Not really much... I mean, I guess you're dead.. and vague threats]
[Genre]: [A bit of everything; a bit of crack, bit of angst, bit of fluff, mainly gonna tag it as misc. Tho]
[A/N]: [TYSM for this req!! Dhshdhf it was really fun to write!!!] ☆ [Also, I'm sorry that I removed Blade and Aventurine– I wasn't sure what to do for them, and I also tried to comply to my new character limit, so I could finish this in a reasonable amount of time 😭]
◇
◆
◇
Jing Yuan
-> Ooh okok so not really a ghost, but imagine being a heliobus, like Mr. Tail, and Cirrus!! Perhaps you're a bit more of a scaredy-cat than the rest of your kindred, so instead of running(floating?) around and causing trouble, you instead hide out in secluded areas, usually devoid of people.
◇ Heliobi are still naturally drawn to mischief, though– so when you see a carefree man, strolling casually through your space, you can't help but come crashing straight through his body, possessing him briefly.
◆ You can feel the man's body jolt at the sudden intrusion, your laugh echoing in his mind. However, once your little burst of confidence runs out, you're quick to leave and go back to your hiding place- still a bit giddy.
◇ Despite the scare, the man merely laughs alongside you, bidding you farewell as if you were an old friend. It felt as if he was staring right through you as he left.
◇◆◇◆◇
↑ Such types of scenarios soon become more and more common; the General would pass through your little territory, you'd try and scare him, and then you'd both laugh a bit. You rarely actually conversed, although the times you did were pleasant.
◇ Jing Yuan can't help but feel a bit sad when you inevitably wander back to Fyxestroll Garden, blending in easily among those of your kind. Not that he can blame you for leaving.
◆ You'll probably return a few decades later, when you eventually grow bored of your kindred spirits.
◇◆◇◆◇
Dan Heng
-> Trailblazing ghost....
◇ I'd like to imagine you're the type of spirit who can possess electronic equipment, like Rotom from Pokémon. So you basically broke onto the Astral Express and now permanently haunt all of the Nameless's nightmares.
◆ For such a tiny spirit, you act like a demon; synthesizing weird and possibly illegal foods for the Trailblazer, utilizing the coffee machine so that Himeko's beverage is cold– hell, once you even messed with March 7th's camera.
◇ But, throughout your reign of terror, the passenger you pranked the least was Dan Heng. (You'd once pretended to crash and erase the Data Bank and then he threatened to give you a first class ticket to your second afterlife. Given his abilities, you don't want to test whether or not he can actually do that)
◆ The two of you seem to have reached a point of mutual respect; not really digging into each other's lives, but still always ending up involved.
◇ Dan Heng is always being dragged into your pranks, while you often end up having to sit and stare blankly as he recites the entire FNAF lore, from memory, all with a straight face.
◇◆◇◆◇
Dr. Veritas Ratio
-> Today was truly a tragedy. Recently, one of Dr. Ratio's top students had passed away. They had such potential, and it's a shame to see such intelligence go to waste. Regardless, just because one person's life has ended, doesn't mean everyone else's lives can pause.
◇ So, with a heavy heart, the professor strides into his class, ready to solemnly break the news and continue his teachings.
◆ "Good morning, Mr. Ratio!" A familiar voice chirps; sitting in their usual seat and chatting joyously with their usual classmates.
◇ Veritas snaps his head towards you, eyes widening for only a fraction of a second before awkwardly clearing his throat. You're alive... but you're also not? Tf... Dr. Ratio has read many books, but he has only heard about the spirits of the dead returning in fiction.
◆ "....Good morning, ...〔Name〕. See me, after class." Is all he says to you before stiffly beginning the lesson.
↑ Dr. Ratio is definitely the most appalled out of everyone here– granted, maybe that's because he personally knew you when you were alive. It's definitely funny, though, trying to explain to him how you kinda just woke up, after you died.

Hannibal and the Mastery of Mindfulness (original post: 7/9/24)
Back when I was watching the C2E2 Hannibal panel, Mads said something pretty interesting that caught my attention.
He says Hannibal is one of the happiest characters he has ever played. He always does things that make him happy and probably walks with a skip in his step because of it. And what more, he’s a man who lives in the moment. That was until he met Will (we’ll get to that part a bit later…). And then it dawned on me that Hannibal has likely gotten away with all the murders he ever committed and managed to live the life he’s had for well over 30 years because he is a master of mindfulness.
Mindfulness in psychology is defined as the following:
Mindfulness is the cognitive skill, usually developed through meditation, of sustaining meta-attention of the contents of one's own mind in the present moment.
Mindfulness has roots in meditation, Hinduism and Buddhism, and is also researched and utilized in the Western world in clinical psychology to treat a variety of psychiatric disorders and even chronic pain. But overall, those who practice and master mindfulness know how to recognize and remain “in the moment”, thus suspending themselves in a state where they can manage the pain of the past and/or lessen their anxieties of the future to come. As a man who lives mostly and purely in the moment, I would say Hannibal is a master of this practice.
For the past 30+ years Hannibal has kept himself busy and has indulged in all things that make him happy. He cooks, exercises, studies and engages in the many arts, and most of all, kills and hunts. He’s always living in the moment and living in bliss in his hedonism. He is truly a master of mindfulness. But just because he’s a master doesn’t mean he’s immune to the changes in his life and environment or being traumatized/re-traumatized. And this is where Will comes in.
Will may have come in like a strong breeze into Hannibal’s life, but he soon became a massive storm that swept Hannibal off his feet. Because for the first time in his life, instead of thinking of the present, he began to think of having a future. The past can be rather painful for Hannibal, but the future is both a place of great anxiety and also a place of infinite hope and excitement. Yet it also became a place of multiple possible tragedies.
Throughout season 1, we’ve seen Hannibal try to adjust to Will’s deductions to cover his tracks, staying true to his practice of mindfulness. However, the more Will gets closer to the truth, we see panic set in, crumbling the peaceful mindset he’s learned to build. By season 2, we see Hannibal become closer to Will, allowing him to open up about his vulnerabilities and his new hopes of the future, but it all came crashing down in Mizumono.
This is the moment where all practices of Mindfulness shattered and so did Hannibal’s mind. We could even argue his heart and soul as well. To be honest, I don’t think he’s ever fully recovered from this and he’s most definitely never been the same. But maybe that’s the point.
Like Will, Hannibal has only continued to change and evolve from who he used to be. He’s broken out of the set lifestyle he made for himself over the last three decades and digs ever deeper into a life of passionate chaos. He puts himself in danger and opens himself up to the possibility of further emotional and mental pain from what Will could do to him. By all logic, it’s madness. But to him, it’s love.

Weapons in the American Revolution
The American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) was a long and bitter conflict fought between Great Britain and its thirteen North American colonies over the Americans' liberties and, eventually, for the independence of the United States. The war, which was fought with both conventional linear tactics and guerilla-style warfare, utilized several different kinds of weapons for multiple styles of combat.
Some of the weapons used in the Revolutionary War had long been staples of European-style warfare. Variations of the flintlock musket, for instance, had been used in battle since the early 1600s and would continue to be used on Western battlefields for decades after the American Revolution had ended. Other weapons, like the groove-barreled Long Rifle, were relatively new additions to warfare; the rifle, used in a limited capacity during the Revolution, would see greater use on the later battlefields of the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) and American Civil War (1861-1865). Some weapons were useful in close-quarter combat such as the bayonet, tomahawk, and saber, while artillery guns were devastating at both long and short distances. None of the weapons discussed in this article were unique to the American Revolution. However, a quick description of the types of weapons used in that conflict could help give the reader a better understanding of what it may have been like to be on a battlefield during the US War of Independence.
Flintlock Muskets
The flintlock musket was the primary weapon of 18th-century European armies and was therefore used by both sides during the American Revolution. A musket was a muzzle-loading, smoothbore weapon that fired a large lead ball with reasonably decent accuracy. By the 1770s, a typical musket weighed about 10 lbs (4.5 kg), was about 5 ft (152 cm) in length, and had a caliber of about .75 (1.9 cm). A typical lead ball weighed about an ounce (28 g). As the name 'flintlock musket' suggests, such weapons relied on a flintlock mechanism to fire. This involved a piece of flint contained within the musket's cock, or hammer. When the trigger was pulled, the hammer would swing forward, causing the flint to strike a piece of steel called the 'frizzen'. This action created a spark that would fall into a flash pan below, wherein a small charge of black powder was contained. The spark would ignite the powder, which would, in turn, discharge the bullet from the gun barrel. By the time of the revolution, flintlocks had long been the most common kind of firearm; the flintlock had been developed in France in the early 1600s to replace the earlier matchlock and wheellock mechanisms and would remain in use until the mid-19th century.
Although the process of firing a flintlock musket sounds complicated on paper, a well-trained 18th-century soldier could typically fire three or four shots per minute. This is quite impressive, especially after considering what the loading process entails. A soldier would first take a pre-rolled musket cartridge – a paper tube containing gunpowder and a lead musket ball – and tear it open with his teeth. He would then pour a small amount of the powder into the flash pan and pour the rest down the muzzle. Next, the soldier would use a ramrod to pack the musket ball, powder, and paper of the cartridge down into the breech. Only after returning the ramrod to its place and fully cocking back the hammer was the soldier finally ready to take aim and fire.
The musket could be effectively fired from a range of about 80 yards (73 m); while it could sometimes be effective at a slightly greater range, musket balls rarely traveled more than 150 yards (137 m). The musket's accuracy largely depended, of course, on the man who wielded it. To increase the effectiveness of the weapon, 18th-century armies adopted the style of linear warfare; an individual musketeer was less likely to inflict damage than a line of soldiers firing coordinated, concentrated volleys. A typical battle line consisted of two or three ranks of soldiers standing shoulder to shoulder, with each man allowed just enough space to be able to present arms, fire, and reload. When the officer gave the order, the line of soldiers would fire in sync with one another (referred to as a musket volley); sometimes the first rank would kneel to give the second rank a better shot, thereby keeping up a higher rate of fire.

Cancelled missions: AS-206 (repeat of Apollo 5)

"On March 15, 1968, NASA announced that the planned second unmanned test flight of the Lunar Module (LM) was not needed given the success of the LM-1 flight during Apollo 5 in January. The decision to not fly LM-2 resulted in a significant cost and schedule savings to achieve the goal of landing a man on the Moon before the end of the decade. And while LM-2 never got to fly in space, it’s use as an important ground test vehicle helped clear the way for the first Moon landing. Because LM-2 was configured for an unmanned flight, it would have been too costly to reconfigure it for a manned flight, primarily to fireproof the cabin. As a result, the first manned test would utilize LM-3, then planned to be launched aboard a Saturn V in late 1968.

The Lunar Module (LM-2) Ascent Stage during vibration tests.
The decision at first put LM-2 and its Saturn IB rocket into storage, but NASA managers decided to use LM-2 as a high-fidelity ground-test vehicle since it contained flight-like systems. After a short time in storage, LM-2 was shipped to the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, where engineers used it for dynamic testing in the Vibration and Acoustic Test Facility (VATF) to better understand the effects of the Saturn V pogo oscillations seen during the Apollo 6 mission in April 1968. The results of those tests contributed to NASA engineers clearing the next Saturn 5 to carry a crew. After the attachment of landing gear, between March and May 1969 engineers in the VATF used LM-2 to conduct drop tests to verify the structural integrity of the vehicle and its subsystems. Because LM-2 contained flight-like vehicle systems, the results of these high-fidelity tests helped clear the Apollo 11 LM-5 to land on the Moon just two months later.

LM-2 ascent stage on display at the 1970 World’s Fair in Osaka, Japan.
After its ground testing days were over, LM-2 continued to be useful. In 1970, its ascent stage spent several months on display at the US Pavillion at 'Expo ’70' in Osaka, Japan, mated to the descent stage of Lunar Test Article-8. When it returned to the United States, it was reunited with its descent stage, modified to appear like the Apollo 11 Lunar Module 'Eagle,' and transferred to the Smithsonian in 1971 for display. In 2016, curators restored and relocated it to the new Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall in the National Air and Space Museum. The Saturn IB rocket that was planned to launch LM-2 came out of storage in May 1973, when it launched the first crew to the Skylab space station."

Why Every Woman Needs a Pair of Classic Denim Shorts in Her Wardrobe
In the ever-evolving world of women’s fashion, some pieces transcend fleeting trends to become true icons. The classic denim shorts are undoubtedly one of them. Far more than just a summer staple, they are must-have wardrobe items that every woman should own. If you’re wondering why these humble shorts hold such a revered spot among women’s fashion essentials, read on. We’re here to show you why investing in a quality pair is a smart style move that offers both versatility and enduring appeal.

The Enduring Legacy: A Brief History of Denim Shorts in Women’s Fashion
Denim has been a cornerstone of American workwear since the mid-19th century, but its transformation into a fashion statement, particularly in shorts form, is a tale of rebellion, freedom, and effortless cool. Originally, denim shorts emerged from cutting down old jeans, a practical and rebellious act that gained traction in the counter-culture movements of the 1960s and 70s. Icons like Marilyn Monroe and later, music legends, cemented their status as symbols of laid-back confidence.
Over the decades, denim shorts have adapted, with various washes, cuts, and finishes, but their core appeal remains unchanged. They represent a blend of rugged utility and undeniable style, making them a fixture in timeless fashion.
Why Classic Denim Shorts Are a “Must-Have” Through Every Season
So, what makes classic denim shorts continuously relevant, season after season? It boils down to their unparalleled adaptability and inherent cool factor. Unlike other seasonal items that get tucked away, denim shorts can be styled year-round, proving they are true wardrobe staples.
Even when the temperature drops, they layer beautifully over tights or leggings, paired with boots and cozy knitwear. This trans-seasonal appeal solidifies their position as an indispensable item, offering endless styling possibilities regardless of the weather.
Unbeatable Advantages: Easy to Style, Durable, Timeless, and Versatile
The power of classic denim shorts lies in their inherent advantages:
Easy to Style: This is perhaps their greatest superpower. From a simple white T-shirt to a sophisticated blazer, denim shorts can be dressed up or down with incredible ease. They act as a neutral canvas, allowing your personality and other wardrobe pieces to shine. For endless casual summer looks or even elevated ensembles, they are the go-to.
Durable: Made from sturdy denim fabric, these shorts are built to last. They can withstand countless washes and wears, often looking even better with age, developing a unique character. This makes them a smart investment and a key component of a sustainable fashion mindset.
Never Go Out of Style: Trends come and go, but denim shorts remain a constant. Their classic appeal means you don’t have to worry about them becoming obsolete next season. They are a true example of timeless fashion, making them a smart, long-term addition to your closet.
Suitable for Many Occasions: While often associated with casual outings, the right pair of denim shorts can surprise you with its versatility. They are perfect for:
Beach trips and poolside lounging
Casual brunches and picnics
Music festivals and outdoor concerts
City explorations and shopping sprees
Even a casual date night when paired with the right top and accessories.
Denim Shorts vs. Other Short Styles: A Comparison
While there are many types of shorts, denim shorts often stand out for specific reasons:FEATURECLASSIC DENIM SHORTSLINEN SHORTSATHLETIC SHORTSTAILORED SHORTSVersatilityHigh – casual to smart-casualMedium – relaxed, breathableLow – primarily for activewearMedium – semi-formal to smart-casualDurabilityVery High – long-lastingMedium – can wrinkle, may need delicate careHigh – designed for movement, but specific useMedium – depends on fabric, can crease easilyTimelessnessVery High – a true classicHigh – classic summer fabricLow – highly trend-dependentMedium – varies with cut and fabricSeasonalityAll-year-round (with layering)Primarily warm weatherAll-year-round (for activity)Primarily warm weatherMaintenanceEasy – durable, often looks better with ageCan wrinkle, may require ironingEasy – typically machine washableMay require dry cleaning or careful ironingFabric FeelSturdy, can soften over timeLightweight, breathable, prone to wrinklingStretchy, moisture-wickingStructured, smoothXUẤT SANG TRANG TÍNH
This comparison highlights why denim shorts offer such a unique blend of practicality, style, and longevity, making them genuinely versatile shorts.
Classic Denim Shorts Styles to Have in Your Wardrobe
While “classic” is the keyword, even within this category, there are a few timeless styles that offer distinct looks:
The Mid-Rise Cut-Off: Perhaps the quintessential classic. These offer a comfortable fit that sits just below the natural waist, with a raw, frayed hem that gives them an effortlessly cool, lived-in feel. Perfect for a casual, laid-back vibe.
The High-Waisted A-Line: A flattering option that cinches the waist and widens slightly towards the hem, creating a balanced silhouette. They are excellent for tucking in tops and elongating the legs. These are a strong contender for must-have wardrobe items.
The Bermudas: A slightly longer, more polished cut that hits just above the knee. These offer more coverage and can easily transition from casual daywear to a smart-casual evening look, especially in a darker wash.
The Relaxed/Boyfriend Fit: Offering more room in the leg and a slightly slouchier silhouette, these prioritize comfort without sacrificing style. They’re perfect for a truly laid-back, effortless aesthetic.
Final Thoughts on Your Denim Shorts Investment
A pair of classic denim shorts isn’t just another clothing item; it’s an investment in timeless fashion and everyday versatility. Its ability to adapt to countless outfits and occasions, combined with its inherent durability and seasonless appeal, makes it an undeniable women’s fashion essential.

Did you know that The Beatles, comprised of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, are universally regarded as the most influential band of all time, whose groundbreaking music and cultural impact fundamentally transformed rock and roll and popular music worldwide? Formed in Liverpool, England, in 1960 (evolving from John Lennon's skiffle group, The Quarrymen), The Beatles' rapid rise to global superstardom in the 1960s sparked "Beatlemania" and ushered in a new era of pop culture.
Their music evolved dramatically over their career, moving from catchy, upbeat pop-rock to psychedelic experimentation, intricate studio productions, and thoughtful, often complex songwriting. Albums like "Please Please Me" (1963), "Rubber Soul" (1965), "Revolver" (1966), and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1967) are considered masterpieces that continually pushed artistic boundaries and redefined what popular music could achieve, often utilizing revolutionary recording techniques under the guidance of producer George Martin. Their later albums like "The Beatles" (The White Album, 1968) and "Abbey Road" (1969) continued this innovation. Beyond their innovative sound, The Beatles also profoundly influenced fashion (like their "mop-top" hairstyles and collarless suits), social movements (promoting peace and love), and youth culture, becoming a symbol of the decade's optimism and change. Their songwriting partnership, particularly between Lennon and McCartney, produced an unparalleled catalog of timeless hits that remain beloved and influential decades later. The Beatles' enduring appeal, their profound musical legacy, and their status as global cultural icons have firmly cemented their place as the greatest and most important band in rock and roll history.

Sometimes the weight of just how little our government cares hits me like a brick. Not even just our current government. Just the decades of wear and tear and deterioration from politicians moving away from the idea of public service to just making money.
I just think about how my town had trollies, and the tracks are still visible at some parts of downtown. But now I see a bus maybe once a week and all the bus stops are devoid of people because public transit is so unpredictable
I think of how my utility bill is comfortably low because I pay directly to the city even for my electricity, because back 100 years ago my town cared about public service and created their own power plant. And how that, like public libraries, is a concept that can only be grandfathered in in modern America; a concept that would be treated as stupid communist bullshit if floated today
I think of old pay phones and tampon dispensers, even the later of which are likely far, far older than me, out of service and never checked, made common in an era where public service and convenience was a positive but forgotten in modern architecture
I think about all the times I've rode trains and seen how they're falling apart at the seams due to underfunding, though they've still managed to be useful enough that I continue to ride even long after our government has cared about their upkeep
I think about the buildings in my town's center that are tall enough that they are clearly intended to have stores on bottom, and apartments up top - but how those upper levels are all empty or have their windows bricked up. And how I live in an apartment that requires an hour walk to get to downtown, along neglected sidewalks that stop randomly and have caused many a bike accident. And how I live just across the street from a grocery store, but I have to jaywalk to get there because my town refuses to make a crosswalk since there's already an intersection nearby - an intersection that allows right runs on red and has blinking yellow lights to allow left turns on green, and where I've witnessed people nearly get run over
And I think about my life, and wonder to myself when the last time I've stumbled across something my government offered (at any level; town, county, state, federal) and felt relieved. And I realize I don't remember.

I would like to preface this post with an acknowledgement that I have blocked the user who originally posted this. The main reason is because nothing would convince them to change their mind (especially because they seem to be intent on "changing minds" but only if it is from a Pro-Palestine to Pro-Israel mindset). That being said, this post I'm making may seem superfluous—why make a response if I don't want the person to see it? Mostly, I want to warn others of the rhetoric used against support for Palestine and—as I will soon address—because these people dared to bring up a subject personal to me and I will not stand to let it to be appropriated for this purpose.
I will be addressing one main post and a few other arguments used against Palestinian resistance.
The main post was posted on Tumblr, and was a respost of a post from Reddit. It is in image form below, but I will add the text if asked in a reblog. My response summarizes the points I address. Also I'm going to have to add my full response in multiple reblogs due to character limits.
The arguments can be summarized as thus:
The methods Western leftists use are ineffective and/or immoral due to idealism and radical approaches. The suggested solution is to give funds to "the Israeli left" and supporting a "reasonable solution" meaning a two-state or one-state under Israel solution, with a "humanitarian end" with a "unilateral Hamas surrender"
Here, they compare the "dream scenario that will never happen" to the situation in Vietnam. I presume they mean the opposition to the war, while the government continued to bomb the country more than all of Europe in WWII combined despite knowing full well they would lose and that they do not mean to make an analogy using the war as a whole. If they had, then I would like to make a snide comment here about the North winning despite the South having the US's support, but I will refrain. More than that, I would relate this to a later argument the poster makes about the "destabilization of Western democracy". Considering the poster is American, I will address this within a US context (although we should really explore the ways other Western countries are acting). This is a reflection of the failure of the power structures within the US as a whole, and not the ineffectiveness of the protests. The war in Vietnam was vastly unpopular but the executive department has historically used presidential power to push war—evidenced by the war power acts previously and Biden forcing through funding for the conflict now. The US is a republic, not a true democracy, and it is self-evident that the same reason the poster claim protests don't work invalidates their claims of an otherwise functioning Western democracy. I would go so far as to suggest revolution is being implied, but the poster evidently thinks resistance is hardly reasonable.
I am curious as to how the poster thinks positive changes have occurred, if they consider boycotts and the like are ineffective (they only say "it doesn't take a lot of thought" to see their point, but it seems to me they are avoiding the issue under the excuse of "common sense" and "brevity"). Most Americans (and most in general) do not have a direct hand in the government—California excepted, perhaps, given the proposition system—so, we turn to utilizing economic power and force. Unions, for one, have earned better treatment for workers for decades (remember the recent SAG-AFTRA strikes?) through the threat of withholding labor and therefore profits. After all, our world is one based heavily in economic-morality (which I am currently writing a separate essay on and which we may point to the response to Yemen right now).

Lmao all this talk of YA books is really taking me back!
If the House of Night series is indeed the one I’m thinking of (I think I may be confusing it with a different series with a similar name)… atrocious.
I actually really enjoyed The Infernal Devices, probably more than The Mortal Instruments. If there was justice in the world, Will/Jem/Tessa would have been poly.
I never read ACOTAR, but I read the first Throne of Glass book by SJM and… it was pretty bad. The MC was irritating, all the characters and relationships were underdeveloped and tropey, the plot was rushed. My sister wanted me to read it, insisting the series gets better and flips everything on its head in the next book, but I was just like… okay, but I need to actually enjoy THIS book or why would I continue? Also apparently later books make it VERY obvious that it’s basically a YA rip-off of asoiaf.
The Cruel Prince I might give a try, since I’ve liked other books by Holly Black. The power imbalance issue you bring up is interesting, because I have enjoyed power dynamics like that in other books (I enjoy very dark/toxic romance), but it sounds like it’s almost unintentional? Like we’re meant to see it as tit-for-tat, back-and-forth enemies to lovers, but it just comes off as unbalanced? Kind of curious to read that one myself now…
Anyway, definitely looking forward to seeing your thoughts on the YA books you read!
Yeah, my thing with dark and toxic romances is I need it to be tit for tat in some capacity, like either they’re both utterly terrible with each other/for each other, or one of them is terrible in service of the other and if there’s a power imbalance, it has to be utilized differently, it can’t be a decade of using that power imbalance to abuse their crush and then the victim of that abuse falls in love/starts to have feelings for the perpetrator for … reasons. It’s not even a moral thing, I just literally can’t suspend my disbelief to go along with it lmao

DEFEAT
The story of Suki and Damian, where the indomitable spirits they fostered change the course of history as they create miracles on their path to power, gaining many rivals and enemies along the way.
Meanwhile, the Great Demon King seeks to break the seal placed on him 10,000 years ago, twisting the fates of man and monster alike to expedite his return to the Mortal Realm. Aiming to seize the jewel of the universe (Earth) and complete his conquest of all worlds.
Under normal circumstances, it should be game over the second he arrives, since most of the world had long forgotten about him. However, thanks to all the consecutive battles and connections this generation has made over the years, they refuse to go down without a fight. Pride be damned. The fate of the universe is on the line.
DEFEAT Extra
Suki, without Damian and co. by her side, momentarily traverses the stars and the earth in search of purpose in a world where her power is currently unneeded. Simply seeking to understand herself akin to her many rivals after the defeat of the Great Demon King.
Little did they know, with great victory came an unprecedented amount of attention from would-be allies and needless foes: ranging from the Galactic Federation, remnants of the Demon King's forces, and facilitators of the Life-Death Cycle itself. There's no amount of training in the world that could prepare them for this. Especially when one of their newfound adversaries come from another time.
DEFEAT Chronicles
Suki and Damian, upon finishing their otherworldly training under their Overseer, Damian opts to return home while adventure calls to Suki to confirm the existence of the elusive Limpid Prism. She joins forces with a peculiar witch from another universe and sets off on a journey across the multiverse.
Unfortunately, this item hunt quickly became a scavenger hunt for the girls as they inadvertently end up shattering the Limpid Prism across the multiverse in the midst of battle with Sevenix. Sevenix just being one Limpid Prism hunter among many, it was inevitable for them to cross paths several power fighters on their extended journey to piece it back together. Of course, with some help from old friends.
~ ✰★ ⋆~ ~ ✰ Alternate Continuities ★ ⋆~ ~ ✰★ ⋆~
DEFEAT Generations
In worlds decades to several millennia after the defeat of the Great Demon King, and in some worlds long after Suki had passed, the perspective slowly shifts towards new eras of battle where the world has evolved and devolved repeatedly. The later generations know little of what it means to foster strength by no fault of their own other than their own imagination.
From Suki and Damian's respective kin (Yuuki and Dante; no relation) growing up together in a quasi-peaceful world with the ambition to become strong like them in order to eliminate an unseen enemy... Sachiko Uno, an exorcist in a battle-worn world hundreds of years in the future who reluctantly does mercenary work as she tries to purge the lands of calamity...
And lastly Saki Suzume, a (mislabeled man-hating) refugee who fled her world along with Takuma after an error with the Artificial Soul Development Plan led to the birth of some sentient plague on the universe that rapidly grew with each planet it absorbed. Tasked with finding some way to neutralize its growth or escape its reach as the new Adam & Eve of the world, they hop planet to planet gambling their lives looking for help.
DEFEAT Divergence
TBD
DEFEAT Genesis (w/@ancicntforged)
The Ultimate Crossover of Time Patrol, Huntresses and Adventurers made after the birth of the Super Saiyan God. Together (Suki, Ruby, Fuscia and Mirai) they continuously leapfrog each other in power as the utilization of Super Dragon Balls becomes more and more prevalent as the years pass them by akin to the scale of tournaments they compete in.
It was inevitable with thrice the possible wishes and the personification of various concepts like Sloth to engage in battle, amongst all the time distortions, that the enemies born from the energy stored by those Super Dragon Balls would be absurdly powerful. Even introducing things like Chaos Ki to boot thereafter.
The girls had no choice but to unleash their full potential and far beyond to contend, which led them to an awe-inspiring victory just before they split ways to partake in the Tournament of Power on Ruby's end, and collect Limpid Prism fragments on Suki's end among many other things. One would think they would be over-leveled for their respective aims there-on, but it's like the old man always said:
"There's always someone stronger out there."

Snot – Get Some
Throughout every decade of music, there are very underrated bands or artists for one reason or another. Sometimes there are bands that are in the right place at the wrong time, because they end up having a sound that wouldn’t be popular for another few years later, or they have a sound that went out of style a few years beforehand (yet they execute that sound really well and should have been known more). Hell, there are some bands that had a unique and cool sound, but they got lumped in with bands that didn’t sound like them, or at least they did on a surface level, so they never got as big as they should have. One band that could apply to, especially the latter, is Snot. You might not know who these guys are, but that’s understandable, because they dropped one album, 1997’s Get Some, and kind of disappeared after that. That wasn’t their own fault, though, because frontman Lynn Strait was involved in a two-car crash, killing him and his dog, Dobbs (who famously appears on the cover of Get Some). The band released a tribute album in 2000, called Strait Up, and they’ve continued to form every so often with a bit of a different lineup each time. Apparently they have another lineup now, and they’re getting ready to tour this summer, but it’s not the same without Strait. One listen through Get Some, and you’ll immediately understand why – he was a once in a lifetime vocalist. He was one of those vocalists that could do it all. His harsh vocals were something to truly admire, but he could also sing and rap pretty well, too, and Snot utilized them all. I had kind of known who these guys were, because I’m a fan of 90s and 00s nu-metal, and whenever I like to get into a genre, I like to find the obscure bands in it. These guys are relatively obscure, since they had one album and disappeared, but they have a cult following all these years later.
What’s interesting about Snot is that they weren’t totally a nu-metal band. They got lumped in with a lot of those bands, because they shared characteristics, whether it was how Strait screamed in a majority of their music, or how they had some pretty heavy riffs, but they were a funk-metal and hardcore band at their core, and I suppose they overlapped with nu-metal by sharing a few traits. They also kind of predated the nu-metal movement by a few years, releasing their debut in the late 90s, whereas the genre would reach its crux by the early 00s. These guys are one of the most unique bands of the nu-metal scene, because they really aren’t a nu-metal band, at least when you really think about it. I’ve been wanting to check them out for awhile, but I always forgot about them. That is, I forgot about them until I found a copy of Get Some at a game store for only $2, and after looking them up and realizing that I’ve heard of them before, I figured I’d check it out. It’s taken me awhile to check it out, but now that I’ve been in the mood for some nu-metal, I figured now would be the best time to give it a listen. Honestly, I really like this album, even if it does have a few small issues that prevent me from really loving it. There’s still a lot to enjoy, and I mentioned vocalist Lynn Strait, but he’s the biggest reason that it’s so good. He’s such a charismatic frontman, and the way he’s able to go from screaming to singing at the drop of a hat is so impressive. There are also a few songs where he does like a sing-song type of singing, too, and they’re not my favorites, but his versatility is my favorite thing about his vocals.
The band’s sound is a big part of why this album works, too, because it ebbs and flows between different ideas and sounds. Some songs have a more funky sound to them, whereas other songs are a nu-metal / hardcore hybrid, but some are more funk-rock and alt-metal. The album admittedly spends too much being pretty intense, and Strait’s harsh vocals are right up there with Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor, but they’re a little intense at times. The album doesn’t really let up, and it’s a bit of a lengthy one at 48 minutes. It’s a wild ride if you want something heavy, but if you want something more accessible and catchy, you won’t get it. My big issue with this album, and it is something hinders it a bit, is that the songs are so intense, the album’s kind of long, and the album weaves between different styles, so it becomes a bit overwhelming and almost a bit much. It’s not too much in a bad way, but at the same time, it’s an album that I don’t really go back very much, because of how intense and long it is. It almost feels claustrophobic at times, because you really can’t breathe with it. There are a few moments that the band gives you to breathe, and there are some slower moments, but they don’t last long. The album just feels like one long hardcore / nu-metal song, and that wouldn’t be an issue if the hooks were good, but they really aren’t. It’s not even that, really, because the hooks are almost nonexistent. This album is really good, and I think it’s underrated classic in the late 90s heavy metal, alt-metal, and nu-metal scenes, but permitting they were able to continue their sound, I wonder if they would smoothed things out a bit. I like the band’s mixture of nu-metal, funk-metal, hardcore, alt-metal, and even some thrash here and there, but it’s a lot to take in at times, so it’s an album I don’t want to listen to all that much, even though I really enjoy it. It’s worth hearing, even if just once, because it’s a rather underrated album from that era.
