A diatribe on wig styling

So, note to self: always cut wigs on MY head and not a styrofoam mannequin head. Things look a lot longer on the mannequin, turns out. (Ignore the mess in the background)

Like. wtf. I have a pretty average head, if a bit small even. I’ve never ever found a hat too small for me unless it was designed for literal children. Usually I fit every hat I’ve put on, or it’s too big. More often than not, I have to tighten baseball hats and the like.

And yet this mannequin head that was the same size as all the others in the store is NOTICEABLY smaller than my head, and as a result the wig is wayyy too short. Like it doesn’t look *bad* but it doesn’t look all that much like Kaminari imo. Maybe one day when I start going to conventions regularly (or at all tbh) I’ll make a new wig for this cosplay (for the third time lol)

I’m waiting on my mom to send me the photos she took of me in my full cosplay, since she has a wayyy better camera than me (she’s got the newest iPhone and I don’t even have night mode lol) and therefore took all the pictures. Once I have those I’ll make an actual Halloween cosplay post, but for now you just get me complaining about mannequin heads being completely ill suited for like, every single person. I mean seriously, when it’s too small to be a serviceable stand-in for my slightly smaller than average head, it is too small for at least 60% of people out there. The whole point is that I don’t have to worry about accidentally cutting myself or fucking up the back while attempting to cut a wig on my own head, and it can’t even do THAT right.

It’s the same head as what I used with my akira and Nagito cosplays, but I didn’t really notice with those because they’re either too short or too long to be all that noticeable respectively. But Kaminari is solidly in the medium length club, so. Yeah.

I probably would’ve redone this wig one day regardless, because I could not for the life of me figure out how to replicate his bangs in a way that looks at all good/accurate. I mean honestly, they defy gravity with the way they sort of fold up at the base and they also look different in every fucking photo of him. It is maddening. It doesn’t help at all that the only reference I could find of the back of his head was a of fucking FIGURINE. I didn’t feel like watching the anime trying to find a good reference frame this time, but maybe I’ll do that one day. Who knows.

I really hate styling wigs. so much. It’s the worst. YouTube tutorials make it look so easy and theirs are all so smooth and voluminous and mine always turn out looking like they got attacked by a particularly pissed off rat. And the spikes always slowly come apart at the ends. And I can’t get them to actually be cool shapes, or straight. They’re always at least a bit curved. Not to mention the insanity that is trying to make them uniform in size. And I can never get the damn head to stay in one place. I’ve tried duck taping it to the table, or gripping it with my knows or thighs, or holding it with one hand while styling using the other, and none of it is particularly Good. Yes yes there are stands for this sort of thing and the head has a hole in the bottom for a reason, I AM AWARE. But do I *look* like I have that kind of money??? All I’m asking is for a wig head that is weighted, preferably with little arms at the bottom to keep it stead on a table. For a reasonable price. I could go on ranting and complaining for fucking ever, but it’s probably getting old.

Anyway, tl;dr: wig heads are too small and wig styling sucks and the full cosplay will be posted sometime soon. Happy belated Halloween.

Shen Yuan should be surprisingly good at makeup. Like, we all know that Shen Jiu could draw eyeliner sharper than Cheng Luan, but Shen Yuan had a meimei.

Imagine she has a school dance or something, and maybe a mean girl at school said something that made Shen-mei decide she was going to wear makeup for the school dance.

Now, of course, Shen Yuan and his geges make sure to tell her that the girl was just mean, and she's beautiful when she's comfortable and happy, not because of makeup etc etc it's all very good intentioned.

Even so, she says, she still wants to wear makeup.

So she buys some, and starts practicing. She's ... Not the best. Shen Yuan finds her crying in the bathroom with crooked eyeliner, mascara transfer marks on her cheeks, foundation and concealer in the wrong shade, contour that looks like a 5'o'clock shadow, overfilled brows, blush that won't blend...

He helps her take off the cakey makeup and bundles her into the living room, comforting warm drinks in hand. They spend the night watching makeup tutorials.

Step-by-step Shen Yuan learns along with his meimei how to do a full face of makeup.

The school dance goes perfectly, Shen-mei was the most beautiful resplendent girl in the school and had a wonderful time with her friends.

Liu Qingge feels a little faint when he watches Shen Qingqiu absentmindedly press his fan to his lips, leaving lipstick marks on the fan. (SY wonders why at that moment, the System lets him know that his fan has leveled up.)

Luo Binghe is trying to figure out a way to get Shizun to teach him to do makeup... The thought of Shizun taking the brush to his lips, concentration furrowing his brows, letting Luo Binghe admire his face even more unabashedly then usual ...

Qi Qingqi changes her tune faster because she has to know how Shen Qingqiu got his eyelashes so perfect.
