When we think of “jewels,” we usually think of inorganic minerals and stones. However, did you know there are “organic” gemstones? They are amber, copal (precursor to amber), coral, jet (precursor to coal), pearl and ammonolite (fossilized ammonite shell). Ivory and operculum (inside of shells) are also used in gemstones. Here is an example of amber from our collections, complete with insect inclusions.

So I got this little beauty today at a bead mall.

It was being sold as amber, though it’s actually called copal -- “young amber”.

While it isn’t old enough to be considered fossilized enough to become what people consider ‘true’ amber, copal will one day become the stone people usually try to pass it off as. Copal is sometimes used as incense as well, due to retaining the scent of the type of tree it comes from.

Thankfully for this piece, I don’t plan on burning it. It isn’t the fully matured amber the owner of the store and I were led to believe, but I’m still unbelievably happy with the fact I bought this.

If you look closely, you can see the full flying ant inclusion near the bottom and even the faint outline of the partial inclusion of the wings of a larger insect right at the drill site!

It’s me again!  I got a shortwave UV light for Christmas, and I finally got to check my rock collection for fluorescence!  Some rocks I knew ahead of time would be fluorescent, some rocks completely surprised me, and some looked cooler than I ever possibly could imagine.  I wanted to show them off, but man, photography’s hard in the dark!  But after much playing around with long exposures (and getting a lot of very blurry photographs), I can finally say this:  who wants to see my fluorescent rocks?!

Let’s start with some banded fluorite!

Fluorite’s the OG fluorescent rock.  It’s so famous for its fluorescence that that’s why the phenomenon is called fluorescence, from the words fluorspar (another name for fluorite) and -essence (state of being).  So fluorescence just means: “being like fluorite!”  Right away I knew some of my fluorite was going to fluoresce!  The zoning (different layers of colors) in this banded fluorite is doing some surprising things, though.

Look at that!  Only a few bands of color are fluorescing: those thin blue-green stripes at the top, and the dark, honey yellow at the bottom.  Surprisingly, the place that’s fluorescing brightest is that stripe that looks like a very dull, dark brown under natural light.  But look at the bright yellow-white it becomes!  Under shortwave UV light, I can even see extra zoning bands that weren’t visible to the naked eye!

Let’s test the rest of my fluorite!  You might remember my incredibly cool chunk of fluorite from Rogerley Mine.  The fluorite of this mine is famous for its daylight fluorescence, meaning it reacts so strongly to UV light that it’ll change color even in regular sunlight!  Here’s what that looks like, by the way.

In sunlight, this piece turns a dark blue.  But look what it does under an intense UV light!  All the translucent crystals turn suddenly opaque, and the entire rock glows a vivid, saturated purple-blue!  This is what I think of when I think fluorescence!

These itty bitty pink crystals are spinel!  Naturally occurring spinel fluoresces under longwave UV light, but these little crystals were grown in a lab.  Lab grown spinel reacts brightly to shortwave UV light, like the one I’m using.  It’s one of the easiest ways to tell them apart.  These lab grown spinel glow an amazingly bright hot pink!

Here are some of the pebbles from my Big Bowl of Gravel.  Shining my UV light around in there revealed a ton of sodalite, a rock which is blue and white under natural light.  But with my UV light shining on them, they fluoresce pink and orange!  Sodalite is another mineral famous for its fluorescence, so I suspected I’d find these little guys glowing.

A rock often confused with sodalite is lapis lazuli, but you can easily tell the difference by looking for little flecks of pyrite.  Lapis lazuli has them, and sodalite doesn’t!  But these two rocks even fluoresce similarly.  My piece of lapis lazuli glows with stripes of neon orange, but lapis can glow white or pink too.

Here’s a rock I didn’t expect to glow!  Fordite is a manmade gemstone, made from the buildup of layers upon layers of paint on car production lines.  It’s a way of recycling human garbage and industrial waste into something beautiful, and it’s one of my favorite manmade rocks.  But this piece must contain some layers of fluorescent paint, because check this out!

Just like in my banded fluorite, there are layers of paint here that weren’t visible to the naked eye.  Some (but not all) of the black paint is turning a turquoise green, and the yellow is suddenly full of bright strips of light yellow and dark orange.  Some of the white glows, too!  I probably should have expected this, since manmade paints and plastics fluoresce all the time.  Some of my figurines and funko pops have fluorescent paint on them too!

Oh man, this one is amazing!  This is septarian, a type of fossilized mud or clay.  Growing in the cracks in the mud are dark crystals of aragonite and yellowish crystals of calcite.  The dark lines of aragonite in this piece are fluorescing a dull orange, and some of the calcite is glowing a pale greenish yellow, fading to blue at the edges.  But did you notice the super cool thing happening here?

Even though it all appears the same color under normal light, some of that calcite isn’t fluorescing.  You know what?  I think that innermost layer isn’t calcite at all, but barite!  Barite in septarian nodules is usually pretty white or clear, but this big barite layer was similar enough to the yellow of the calcite that I didn’t even notice it until I saw it under UV light.  Welcome to the family, barite!  It’s so cool to find new secrets hiding in my old rocks!

Actually, fossils in general are pretty likely to fluoresce.  Here’s my petoskey stone, which fluoresces a pale whitish yellow.  The color is so subtle in person that I passed over this stone several times before realizing it was fluorescing, but it’s super obvious once you compare the pictures!  I wonder what caused that pattern of non-fluorescent spots?  Was it the way the rock formed, or did some of the fluorescent minerals get removed when the rock was polished?  Either way, what a neat effect!

And as usual, I’ve saved the best for last…

This is amber.

And this is also amber!  The bright blue rock with the best fluorescence of all! 

This dark, red-orange rock turns super amazingly bright robin’s egg blue under UV light!!  (It can be yellow-green, too.)  The reaction is so bright and vivid in almost all specimens of amber that it’s one of the best ways to tell it apart from imposter gemstones like copal or manmade resin.  There are even some types of amber that exhibit daylight fluorescence, just like my Rogerley Mine fluorite.  Look at those swirls and patterns of light and dark blues!  The way it highlights the bubbles trapped inside!  How the rock goes from dark and translucent to bright and opaque!  Amber is absolutely beautiful.

Those are all my fluorescent rocks!  I’ve only tested them with a shortwave UV flashlight, so even more of my rocks may fluoresce with a longwave light or simply a more powerful light with better filters!  Some of my other rocks surprised me with cool features like tiny, impossible to photograph flecks of fluorescent inclusions.  From now on, I’ll be on the lookout for even more amazing, glow-in-the-dark fluorescent rocks!

Happy Pride Month, my loves! June is upon us, which means it’s all gay, all the time for the next few weeks. Being queer is a big part of my life and my identity, so I wanted to do something special for Pride. The end result was my most recent video, which you can watch here.

In that video, I try to get through a ton of information in as little time as possible, so I decided to post a written version here for anyone who wants a more solid starting point for incorporating these deities, saints, herbs, and crystals into their own practice. I’ve tried to be as inclusive as possible here — if I’ve missed something that seems obvious to you, please let me know in a comment so I can update the list!

Spiritual Patrons For LGBTQ+ Folks

Patrons For WLW:

Artemis (Greek goddess): Artemis is considered a “virgin” goddess, but it’s important to note that the word “virgin” had a different meaning in Ancient Greek culture. The one thing we know about Artemis for sure is that she was not romantically interested in men, for whatever reason. Artemis swore never to marry or have sex with a man, and she lead the Hunters of Artemis, a group of all-women warriors who spent their days hunting and roaming the forest. She is associated with the moon, archery, the forest, and the hunt. Some of her common symbols are bows and arrows, stags, hunting dogs, and the moon. She was worshiped by the Romans as Diana.

Freyja (Norse goddess): Freyja is a Scandinavian goddess of sex and sexuality, as well as sorcery, wealth, war, and death. I decided to include Freyja in this list because she is associated with sex and sexuality, especially of women, but is not associated with pregnancy or motherhood like many other sex goddesses are — her children are rarely mentioned in the surviving myths. All we know about her husband is that he was lost, leaving Freyja single for all intents and purposes. She is noted for being bold in her sexual pursuits, sleeping with whoever she pleased. She is a goddess for any woman who wants to get in touch with her femininity and sexual power, regardless of sexuality. Some of Freyja’s common symbols are gold, amber, cats, and falcons.

Saints Perpetua and Felicity (Catholic saints): Perpetua and Felicity were African Christians who were persecuted by the occupying Roman government for their faith. Perpetua was a noblewoman — Felicity was one of her slaves. The two women were arrested together and sentenced to prison — eventually they were publicly executed. Some of Perpetua’s letters to family and friends survived, so we actually have a firsthand account of her imprisonments. From these letters it is clear that Perpetua and Felicity were very close, and historians have long speculated that they may have been romantically involved. Today they are considered unofficial patron saints of same-sex couples, especially women. You can buy medals and prayer cards for both of these saints from online Catholic stores. Like all Catholic saints, they can be honored with a white candle and/or Three Kings incense (this is the incense blend used by churches).

Patrons For MLM:

Apollo (Greek god): Apollo was the twin brother of Artemis, and has a similar history with the LGBTQ+ community. The Ancient Greeks had a very fluid attitude towards sexuality, but today we would probably classify Apollo as either bisexual or pansexual. There are myths that explicitly mention him having male lovers. Apollo was very close with his sister, Artemis — perhaps an early example of MLM/WLW solidarity? Apollo is associated with the sun, prophecy, healing, and the arts, especially music and poetry. Some of his symbols include the lyre, a laurel wreath, a bow and arrow, and a python. He was also worshiped by the Romans.

Freyr (Norse god): Funnily enough, we have another brother/sister pair. Freyr was the brother of Freyja, and he shared her association with sex and abundance. Freyr was a primarily agricultural god, and was believed to bring spring rains to nourish the growing crops. One of his strongest associations was with male sexuality — in fact, he was often depicted in art with a giant, erect penis! Like his sister, Freyr was more associated with the act of sex itself than when what comes after. Freyr is an excellent god for any man looking to get in touch with his own masculine power, regardless of sexuality. Some of his symbols are a boar, a ship, and a phallus.

Saint Sebastian (Catholic saint): Saint Sebastian has long been considered an unofficial patron of gay men, and the story behind this association is a wild ride. Unlike Saints Perpetua and Felicity, there is no historical evidence that Sebastian was queer. He was a martyr, and according to legend he was executed by being bound to a tree and shot with arrows. When the Plague hit Europe, Sebastian was often called upon for protection — this was the beginning of his popularity as a saint. Baroque artists created a lot (like, A LOT) of paintings of Sebastian that depicted him as a beautiful, muscular young man, clad in a loin cloth, gazing passionately up at Heaven as he was pierced with arrows. As you might imagine, he became something of a sex symbol. In fact, Sebastian became so popular with the gay men of Italy that he had his own cult! You can buy medals, prayer cards, and candles dedicated to Saint Sebastian, and again, he can be honored with a white candle and/or Three Kings incense.

Nonbinary and Genderfluid Patrons

Loki (Norse god): Technically, Loki is a jötunn (a frost giant), not a god, although he was formerly allied with the Aesir and lived in Asgard. Loki was a shapeshifter, and was known to take female forms as well as male. In fact, he once took the form of a female horse and gave birth to a foal! Loki is probably one of the most explicit examples of a genderfluid deity in European mythology. However, some pagans choose not to work with Loki. He is sometimes considered a “negative” god because of his association with mischief and chaos, and because he ultimately betrayed the Aesir. It is up to you whether to work with him or not, although I would definitely advise you not to bring Loki into a circle with any of the Aesir.

Odin (Norse god): The common image of Odin in pop culture is of a fierce warrior-king, but this is not historically accurate. Odin was often depicted as an old man in traveler’s clothes, and he was associated with several cultural taboos. Though he is definitely identified as masculine, Odin ruled magick, which was considered feminine in Scandinavian culture — it was dishonorable for a man to practice such “woman’s work.” Odin knew that some things transcend gender, and he is a wonderful patron for anyone looking to break away from traditional gender roles. Besides magick, he rules war, strategy, death, astral travel, and knowledge. Some of Odin’s symbols are ravens, wolves, his spear, and his armband. I personally burn mugwort incense when working with Odin. He was also worshiped by Germanic and Anglo-Saxon peoples as Wodan.

Archangel Gabriel (an angel honored in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam): Gabriel is usually identified with masculine pronouns, and “Gabriel” has became a common man’s name in many countries — but in art, Archangel Gabriel is often depicted with feminine features, and sometimes even with a clearly feminine body. This is because Gabriel is strongly associated with the Divine Feminine and with feminine energy in general. Gabriel rules pregnancy and female reproductive disorders, and is responsible for the care of children. He is also associated with the moon, a common symbol of goddess energy. Angels have no true gender, so they are all androgynous in nature, but Gabriel is especially so. Because of this, he is an excellent patron for nonbinary people. Some of Gabriel’s common symbols are a trumpet, a white lily, the moon, and water. Incenses associated with him are frankincense and camphor.

Honorable Mention: Santa Muerte (Mexican deity/folk saint): Santa Muerte may not be trans, nonbinary, or genderfluid herself, but she’s a fascinating figure and deserves a place on this list. Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte (“Our Lady of the Holy Death”) is a personification of death, and is called on for healing and protection by her followers. What is especially interesting is that Santa Muerte is considered a protector of all outcasts from society, including all LGBTQ+ people and especially transgender people. She is even invoked in same-sex marriage ceremonies in some parts of Mexico! Her worship has recently spread to the United States, with churches dedicated to her in California and New Orleans. You can buy statues and altar candles in her image. Common incenses for honoring Santa Muerte include copal, myrrh, and rose.

UPDATE: I’ve been told that worship of Santa Muerte is part of a closed cultural tradition, and is therefore not open to people outside of Mexican and Mexican American culture. I’m leaving her in this post because I still find her story uplifting, but I do ask all of my followers to please be respectful of this beautiful goddess and her cultural roots. I think we can find hope in her role as a pro-LGBTQ+ deity, while respecting that she is not ours to worship or work with. 

Correspondences For LGBTQ+ Issues in Meditation and Spellwork

As I mentioned in one of my previous YouTube videos, magick is the act of manipulating the spiritual energy that permeates the universe. Every part of the natural world, including plants and minerals, has a different type of energy associated with it. If you want to connect with a certain energy (like the energy of romance, for example), you can surround yourself with things that correspond to that energy to make the connection easier.

A lot of the love spells that I’ve been able to find online use correspondences that have a strong association with straight romance. Obviously, some symbols are universal, but I wanted to find some correspondences that can specifically be used for manifesting same-sex romantic relationships. Here’s what my research turned up:

Correspondences For Love Between Two Women:

Rose Quartz: Rose quartz is considered the stone of unconditional love, and it can be used universally to attract love of all kinds, not just romantic. I think this crystal could be especially useful for women seeking a feminine partner, because it has a very strong feminine energy. Rose quartz is also strongly associated with self-love, and teaches us the important lesson that the best way to attract love is to start by loving ourselves. You could incorporate it into a love spell, wear it as jewelry, or meditate with it to align yourself with its loving energy.

Moonstone: Sometime’s called “the woman’s stone,” moonstone is very strongly associated with womanhood and with feminine sexuality. It is said to attract love and to increase passion in existing relationships. Unlike many other crystals associated with sex, moonstone has a very peaceful energy and can be used to calm anxiety or to soothe tense situations. Moonstone is a great stone for any woman looking to reconnect with her feminine power, or for increasing passion in an existing relationship between two women.

Violets: Violets have been associated with romantic love between women since the Ancient Greek poet Sappho of Lesbos (from whom we get the words “lesbian” and ‘sapphic”) used them as a symbol in poems dedicated to her female lover. In the Victorian era, queer women would give their lovers bouquets of violets instead of roses. (In the Victorian “language of flowers,” violets represent faithfulness.) In magick, violets are used to attract love and to increase luck in romantic endeavors. They are also edible — why not brew a violet tea and drink it as a love potion?

Correspondences For Love Between Men

Malachite: In many ways, malachite is the masculine counterpart to rose quartz. Despite its strongly masculine energy, malachite is deeply healing and works to open and unblock our heart chakra, as well as to heal any heartbreaks we may not quite have gotten over. Malachite is also considered the “salesman’s stone,” and can be used for situations where you are trying to “sell yourself” to a potential lover by giving a good first impression. Some people are afraid to use malachite because it is “toxic” — although it does contain copper, which can cause health problems if consumed in high amounts, wearing malachite or holding it against the skin is definitely not enough exposure to cause an issue. As long as you don’t eat your malachite or dissolve it in water, you will be fine.

Red Jasper: This is a wonderful stone for men looking to recharge their sexual energy, or to spice up an existing relationship. Jasper in general is associated with courage and charm, and for this reason it is often recommended to people involved in the performing arts, like actors and singers. Red jasper has a strong masculine energy, and is associated with the root chakra and our connection to the earth. Red jasper is an excellent stone to work with if you are dealing with sexual anxiety, or anxiety over being open about your sexuality. Meditate with it to feel more grounded, courageous, and stable.

Green Carnation: Although the connection between green carnation and queer men is not as ancient as the connection between violets and queer women, it is still well established. Oscar Wilde, who was openly gay, is said to have begun the trend of wearing a green carnation as a signal that he was seeking a man as a lover. Other men in Victorian England began to follow the trend, and the association still stands. In magick, carnation is said to enhance creativity and magickal power. Since it acts as an amplifier for other magickal energies, a green carnation can make any love spell more effective, especially for men seeking men.

Crystals and Herbs For Trans and Nonbinary Folks

Note: I said this in my video, but I feel like it bears repeating here — magick is not a replacement for mental healthcare. If you are struggling with gender dysphoria, I strongly encourage you to seek professional counseling if at all possible. None of the herbs, crystals, or spells mentioned below (or anywhere in this post) are intended as a replacement for medical or psychiatric treatment. If you are already taking medication of any kind, be sure to research potential interactions before ingesting any herb for magic or holistic purposes.

Chrysocolla (for trans and nb women): I first learned about chrysocolla from an episode of the Fat Feminist Witch podcast called “Not Every Goddess Has a Sacred Womb.” That episode discussed issues with equating womanhood to motherhood (or even just to having a uterus), and chrysocolla was brought up as a crystal with strong feminine energy that wasn’t tied to uterine health. This is a great stone to meditate with to get in touch with your own goddess energy, without any biological associations. Chrysocolla is also strongly associated with new beginnings, which may make it a useful spiritual tool for anyone who is just coming out of the closet.

Green Tourmaline (for trans and nb men): Much like malachite, green tourmaline is strongly associated both with masculine energy and with the heart chakra. It is a stone of masculine authority, and can be used either to get in touch with your own power or to help in overcoming emotional issues related to a father figure in your past. Tourmaline in general is said to convert negative energy into positive, which makes it ideal for overcoming any difficult situation.

Damiana (for trans and nb men AND women): Known by the scientific name Turnera diffusa, damiana is currently being clinically studied for its ability to balance hormones in all sexes. In holistic healing, damiana is commonly used to treat sexual problems — this is another one that may be useful for increasing sexual confidence. It is also said to help relieve anxiety and to decrease stress. Damiana is available both as herbal supplements and as a tea.

Angelica or Dong Quai (for trans and nb women): These are two different names for Angelica sinensis, which has been used in folk medicine for hundreds of years. It is often used to relieve symptoms of menopause because it increases estrogen levels when taken regularly. Angelica is also a powerful magickal herb, and is popular in American folk magick. It is sometimes associated with Archangel Gabriel, who I mentioned earlier, and is used for protection and healing. Angelica is available in teas and supplements, though it is usually marketed as “dong quai” in these forms.

Ginger (for trans and nb men): Lab studies found that ginger significantly increased testosterone levels in male rats. Human studies are still underway, but the research that has been done indicates similar benefits for humans. In magick, ginger is considered a magickal “power up” of sorts, and is often added to spells to add power or to speed up results. You can use ginger to increase your own masculine power, and to infuse yourself with a little bit of its sweet and spicy energy. Ginger is available both as a supplement and in teas, and of course it can be used in cooking.

This ended up being a way bigger project than I originally planned, but my research turned up so much good information that I wanted to share. I hope that some of this is helpful to all of my fellow gay witches out there, and I hope that you all have a magickal and blessed Pride Month.

One is for men seeking men, one is for women seeking women, and one is for people who either don’t associate strongly with any one gender or don’t care about the gender of their partner. I’m not quite understanding the price ranges on your amber posts...

Genuine amber (especially the best pieces selected out of a lot of 800+ pieces that took a miner years to accumulate) are going to be a lot more expensive than the fake resin that's flooding the market. Amber is priced based on the quality and rarity of its inclusions, and not by size.

Also, a lot of "amber" on the market is actually copal (tree sap that is not old enough to be classified as amber) which is also much cheaper than genuine amber.

How to Clear Old Energy: Your Space

The final step in clearing out the old energy to prepare for 2020 is to focus on your space. This step ensures that your space is as ready as you are for the new year!

Step 1: Burn Sage - Open all the doors and windows so that any negative energy can leave the space. Light your sage for 30 seconds and blow on it to create enough smoke to fully cleanse your environment. Make sure to get the smoke into smaller space like corners, or up toward the ceiling!

Step 2: Make a Space Clearing Jar - Add 2 tablespoons of sea salt and one Black Tourmaline to a Mason jar, and it up halfway with water. Place this in a central area of each room of your home. The combination of salt and Black Tourmaline work together to eliminate any remaining negative energy and absorb low vibrations.

Step 3: Grid Your Space with Selenite - Seal your space with light by placing a Selenite tower in every corner of your home. This light energy not only fills your space with positivity, but it also blocks negativity. Points or towers work best for this purpose because their shape directs the energy of light upward and outward.

Step 4: Burn Incense - The final step in this energetic cleansing is to burn incense. This inclusion of crystals adds another layer to this energy tool, infusing your space with both calming and clearing energy. You can use any type of incense you'd like, but copal is especially recommended.

It's also important to do it before, rather than after, the new year - you don't want to clear all of the powerful new energy that January 1st brings.

It's my hope that these tips on how to clear out old energy from your space helps anyone who is willing to try something new and different. In the meantime, I shall extend well wishes to you and your family for a wonderful, smooth transition from 2019 to 2020.

Tulum is a magical place where the jungle, sea, and ancient spirits all come together in one place. Being my first international travel destination independently, and being Pavel and I’s first international trip together, it was even more special (even though being in Texas we have the advantage of being a very short flight away). We saved, planned, and booked this trip right before school started for us in August, so we would have something to look forward to throughout the semester and after we finished our finals. Tulum has become increasingly popular in the last several years, as traditional tourist spots like Cancun and Playa del Carmen have become dated and worn out, while Tulum offers a more authentic and fresh experience. 

It’s tempting to get an inclusive-retreat style hotel when traveling to these parts of Mexico, especially as people are often (overly) concerned about safety in Mexico and want to stretch their hard-earned vacation money. I initially considered this too, but quickly learned that Tulum offers a lot less large resorts and hotels (at least for now) and is all about small, boutique-style hotels. Plus, getting to visit other hotels, restaurants, and just wandering in Tulum is an essential part of fully experiencing all this amazing place has to offer. 

We stayed at Coco Limited Tulum for 5 days, which was the perfect amount of time in my opinion. Even weathering a day and a half of clouds/rain, we still had enough time to rearrange our plans for the weather and just what we were feeling that day without stressing about not having enough time to do everything we wanted. For anyone planning a trip to Tulum, I would definitely suggest a full week though, especially if you want to venture out to more remote spots. Here are some of the spots we visited that are essential to check out and a little bit about our experiences at each place. 

☽ Cenotes at Casa Tortuga — I was initially planning to visit one of the open cenotes here because I was scared of swimming in the caves and covered cenotes. When we went to the front desk of our hotel for a taxi there they had a deal with Casa Tortuga and we were able to buy our tickets there to visit all 4 cenotes. It turned out to be incredible even though I was really terrified at first to go into the caves, we had a guide and were with a group so that really helped ease me into it and also made the entry price well worth it. It ended up being so beautiful and so much fun to experience this place as our first cenote visit!

☽ Archeological Zone of Tulum (Mayan Port City Ruins) — absolutely beautiful and within biking distance to most hotels on the Playa strip! It was a really cool place to experience history, walks in the jungle, gorgeous views of the water, and even some wildlife all in one place. Definitely take a bike ride here or just to the Pueblo, biking is also essential in Tulum and most hotels will have them to rent. Also, TONS of tourists from cruises and other areas visit here daily, so arriving early before the crowds will save you lots of time and make it less crowded for photos. We arrived around 10 am and there was no line for tickets/entry, but by the time we left around noon, there was a massive line waiting to get in.

☽ Tulum Pueblo — way cheaper to get souvenirs/hand-made goods here than you’ll find around the Playa area and some great cheap/local food too! We rode bikes here after visiting the Mayan ruins, and it was really close with a lot to see along the ride there. If there was one thing I would recommend doing while visiting the city is to go to a supermarket and buy a small cooler, ice, and drinks/snacks to just keep in your room. It’ll save you a lot on overpriced drinks along the beach, we got a 6-pack of Coronas (which I totally fell in love with while there) for about $1 USD while along the beach they would be at least $4-5 for one!

☽ Ahau & Raw Love Tulum — Ahau is a hotel and restaurant and within their property is one of the most loved and photographed sculptures and raw vegan spots in Tulum. The massive Raw Love statue was donated to Tulum by South African artist Daniel Popper and represents 𝙂𝙖𝙞𝙖, mother earth, opening her heart and giving loving energy for all of us. She loves and gives to us unconditionally. She keeps us alive. She gives us food, air, water, love, and so much more. To me, this perfectly captures the spirit of Tulum. Sadly, she was closed off for maintenance while we were there so we didn’t get good photos, but still seeing this amazing sculpture in real life was very cool. Just checking out this property and coming here twice during our stay for food was great. It’s a perfect spot for a light and refreshing lunch with a view of the beach. They also offer yoga and other holistic healing classes that I would have loved to join if we had more time there. 

☽ Cenote Nitcte-ha — a little farther of a drive from the Playa strip, this cenote is among the most beautiful and well-known in Tulum for its open clear waters and vibrant lily pads and well worth a visit. I was so excited to swim here and take photos, but I overlooked one small thing. This cenote has a lot of little fish and I am absolutely terrified of fish (yes, even the tiny ones). Maybe an odd fear for someone who loves being in the water, it actually really freaked me out and took me a while to get in the water without hyperventilating. The water was so cold and felt amazing, and it was worth the cortisol pumping through my body to experience this place!

☽ Resturants for dinner — among the best-rated in Tulum and worth visiting in our experience are Taboo, Ziggy’s, Mur Mur, Cenzotle, and Casa Jaguar. Keep in mind, a lot of these places are expensive with prices comparable to higher-end restaurants in the states. Don’t expect Mexico prices at restaurants along the Playa, but honestly, the quality and unique flavors of the food are incredible and like nothing I’ve had before. It’s worth the extra money to splurge on some of the amazing meals these places have to offer. I wish we had more time to try more of the restaurants and bars in the area though because they’re all amazing and delicious, you really can’t go wrong. 

☽ Swim and walk along the beach — simple, and of course what most people come to do, but I seriously cannot emphasize how healing and amazing it feels to have your toes in the sand and let the waves of Carribean sea wash over you. Saltwater has incredible healing properties, and on the days where the water was calmer, it was so much fun to swim in the crystal-clear waters. Not to mention you feel so relaxed and sleep like a baby after playing in the waves and sand all afternoon. 

Tulum is seriously an incredible, magical, and special place. The way the sunshine lights up the green leaves of the jungle, the smell of burning Copal, and the sound of the waves are something I won’t forget and would totally go back for. Well worth visiting, the only thing I would do differently is to spend more time researching the ethical practices of the places stay and dine at. After our trip, I was curious and did some YouTube learning on the history of Tulum. Of course, tourism always comes with an environmental cost, but I learned why this issue is especially critical for Tulum. I also learned about some of the beliefs and values of the indigenous Mayan people, and I think it makes travel much more valuable when you actively care about and learn about the culture, the environment, and the history of places you visit. 

Speaking of this, some of the most striking memories I have of Tulum go beyond the beautiful views and tasty food. At one of the shops at the end of the Playa strip near the city, we bought a dream-catcher and some other little souvenirs and when we went to pay, the man pointed to the back where there was a little table with two women were cooking food on hot plates. “They hand make these,” he said as he pointed to the women who kindly smiled at us. As a tourist, the least you can do is spend your money at local places so women like them can feed their families. The culture of this region in Mexico is one of kindness and trust. Vastly different than in America, when we took taxi rides to the cenotes, both times our drivers offered to take us round trip and waited for us while we visited the cenotes. They wouldn’t even let us pay for the ride there but would leave and come back or simply wait for us, trusting us to find them for our ride back. Even offering to keep our bags in the car so we didn’t have to rent lockers, the local people you’ll encounter in Tulum are just incredibly trusting and kind. Many of them would give us tips and talk about their favorite cenotes, and I was in love with the open, kind culture of the people here. My conversational Spanish really picked up while I was there, and I was inspired to finally take my Spanish skills a step further after years of being exposed to Spanish to be fluent by the end of 2020. 

The experiences, memories, connections, and inspiration that comes with traveling like this is truly invaluable. Taking this trip was one of the best things I did this year and I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to do so. I can’t wait to keep traveling, checking off places on my list, and being inspired by the places and people I encounter.

Mientras prendo un copal me acuerdo del rubio crespo que envolvió mi corazón de buena literatura. Este olor me recuerda a cuando empezó todo lo nuestro, “nuestro es el momento (...) nuestra es la calidez”. Pero no quiero hablar de él. Ya no quiero regalarle más energías y probablemente si habrá un definitivamente adiós. Quizás hoy. Ultimamente mi vida se ha visto rodeada de numerosos adioses y seguirán. Este fin de semana comenté que me habían roto el corazón junto a una botella de Volcanes, sorbos recordando y olvidando. Antes de que llegaran pensé en dos posibilidades. 1.Daba vuelta la página rotundamente con Sapi o 2.Con todo si no pa que(?) Pues, entre el alcohol, la arena y el frio de la brisa marina, fui a mojarme los pies al mar, me mojé la falda de cotelé nueva que adquirí hace poco. Reí con La Luz de la luna y me devolví a convencer a los demás, solo me acompañó quien no quería. Me pidió un beso después de alguna metáfora de la vida que dije sobre la naturaleza y sus elementos. Le pregunté por qué y al parecer es que como alguna vez le gusté, quería no quedarse con las ganas. Se lo di y no sentí nada. Nada. Lamentablemente, porque besaba bien pero no me gusta. A veces me cae mal pero es mi amigo y lo quiero mucho. Pero no sentí nada. Nada. Hace mucho tiempo no me pasaba eso. Porque no suelo besar sin sentimientos o alguna atracción más abstracta. En mi cabeza pensaba: Nisiquiera por estar borracha siento algo? WOW. Asi que paré y continue la juerga.  Era extraño, siempre me gustó su amigo, quien varias veces desistí de buscarlo. Pero me di cuenta que aun me sentía atraída porque me daba vergüenza mirarlo a los ojos mucho rato, inclusive ebria. HACE TANTO NO ME PASABA! Ay... la noche siguiente me acompañó Sapi y lo pasamos bien, tomamos vino blanco y tinto. Escuchamos música, nos reímos, vimos videos en youtube demasiado chistosos, bailamos, nos pusimos pepino en la cara -porque me insolé en la playa y el tenía mucho calor entonces me copiaba-, leímos uno de los libros que trajo y me prestó. Hablamos de muchas cosas y de nuevo habían tantas en común como en un principio.  Ahora que me gusta el anime y me estoy adentrando a las series coreanas habrá notado otro interés en mí? Llegaron mis progenitores y seguimos hasta que notamos que ya eran más de las 4 am. No sabía como pero quería besarlo. No suelo ser la que busca la iniciativa entonces me veía muy atrapada asi que bueno, filo, será. Mejor así. La pasamos muy bien.  Lo veo observándome gracias a La Luz de la luna. Jugueteamos y terminamos besándonos, lo sentí, LO SENTÍ! muy dentro de mí, algo de mi estomago sabia por todo mi abdomen y retorcía mi cuerpo, nos apegamos y no paramos.  Pensé que nunca pasaría, le dije después de harto rato mientras intentábamos dormir -cosa que nunca lográbamos- así que lo conversamos. Que cuatico que después de tanto tiempo se concretó. Hablábamos desde el 2016/2017 y ambes pensábamos que quizás podría pasar algo. Algo pasó por lo que no continuamos y pucha. El amigo que nos presentó era una gran barrera, lo fue la noche anterior y ahora sentimos algo de culpa. Ya al siguiente día, mi timidez seguía en pie. No quiero ser catete, siempre lo fui. Pero ahora era distinto. De hecho nos comparó a los primeros personajes de Racimo. Que él era como García que nunca se callaba y yo como Torres Leiva, silencioso. En la tarde, sin él. Mientras leía mi libro bajo la sombra en un quitasol sentada en la playa lo recordaba y me estremecía. Anoté en las páginas una pregunta que me he estado haciendo últimamente: “Por qué soy tan enamoradiza?”  Me voy a la capital con mucho sueño acumulado porque dormimos muy poco. Miro los paisajes y recuerdo haber escrito alguna vez sobre el sexo. El sexo banal o reciclable. No. Yo no soy así y lo confirmé besando a mi amigo en la orilla del mar. Ya lo venía pensando hace tiempo. No puedo involucrarme con alguien sin sentir nada. Debe haber alguna conexión de alguna u otra forma. Me relaciono a través del amor, no sobre lo material o el mero placer. Si fuese por eso quizás el ego no me hubiera dolido tanto cuando ese pololo cosificaba a las mujeres en la calle o mi ex se metiera con cualquiera porque pudiera. Yo no. Y por eso también le dolió a ella. Porque yo si me relaciono con las personas. Ella quería ser la única con lo que lo tuviera.  Ahora no lo dejo de pensar. Porque me gusta recordar y que se me sigan apretando los órganos de nervios. No me atrevo a escribirle porque para qué. Pero antes de dormirme anoche, tomé el libro que me prestó para leer y entre páginas apareció su olor. Me fui a la cresta y noté que ahora la luna si estaba llena, iluminaba mi pieza por la ventana. Apagué La Luz de mi cómoda para confirmar tal potencia y sí. Me apoyé sobre el libro mirando las manchas oscuras de la luna, respirando el olor de Sapi, recordando que ambes leímos unos capítulos y lo lindo que era que me abrazara tiernamente.
