The Ink Demonth 2023 - Day 23. Contraband
Day 23. Contraband Crossover: Craig of the Creek, Disenchantment Apparently Workshop toys are a pretty bad currency at least for the time being, but wait until you have some more of them, Kit, and you can make the best trade in your life: "limited edition toys from haunted studio, only from me!"
Kit, as well as the Trading Tree itself, come from the cartoon "Craig of the Creek" (I drew Craig once), which is an extremely nice Cartoon Network production showing kids playing on the titular Creek. I love it for many things - firstly, it brings back sentimental memories from my own childhood, secondly, it is a wonderful cross-section of different types of kids and their behavior, thirdly - it shows small problems in a completely different light. Every parent should watch this series to understand things better. I especially love the episodes that alternately show what the kids see - and what is really happening (e.g. during the game "the floor is lava"). My objection is the same as against Bluey: that it is a bit unrealistic that all the kids always take part in the games and accept the sometimes problematic rules (e.g. when playing hide and seek or being trapped in a maze) - that no one will say "ok, I've had enough, I'm not playing with you anymore". But apart from that - a wonderfully presented world of imagination, actually a mini-community. This series was also "nominated" for the City entry for a while, but I decided that I wouldn't find anything else for the Contraband (plus wanted to draw Kit).
I really like the character of Kit. This little, enterprising girl is something of a higher instance of the creek - thanks to her, kids (for a small fee) can eat their favorite sweets or snacks without having to leave their playground and go to the store, she also sells toys and gadgets. I ship her with Craig - all the episodes of them working together confirm in my eyes what a wonderful couple they'll be when they become teenagers. I'm honestly counting on it, because of all the girls hanging around Craig, Kit is the one who best suits him in terms of character and common interests.
More observant people may also notice a guest from another cartoon, this time absolutely not for children - the demon Luci from "Disenchantment" - a series by the creators of Futurama aimed at adult viewers, a somewhat modern fairy tale, and partly a parody of many well-known stories. If someone is an adult and doesn't know it, I recommend it. A wonderful story with a very good ending to the whole plot. Luci, the personal demon of the main character, Princess Bean, is undoubtedly my favourite character. I love his physical two-dimensionality, to his absolutely non-one-dimensional character. I love his texts and the fact that in all his participation in Bean's adventures, he never forgets for a moment that he is a hellish being, and his "do it, do it" is always wonderful. In his original storyline, Luci was considered a "weird cat" by those around him, hence Kit's text (while he's actually just another of Bendy's "cousins" that the ink demon is wandering around with).
As for the technical side... it took a lot of time to colour, but was surprisingly fun. It was the first time in a long time that I shaded in such a strange way. Oh, it's worth noting that the colours of Bendy's clothes were entirely developed by my daughter, Ursa. Kudos to her! By the way, I wonder who Bendy stole these clothes from X"D
Finally, I will just mention that the Contraband theme was originally associated with "The Owl House" and Eda's stall, but I moved it to another place with a better idea. And that's why Craig landed here.
PS. I don't like Kopiko, but I'm not crazy about avoiding showing existing products in my drawings. But seriously, I didn't feel like changing the name, so here you have it, a covert advertisement for the hideous Kopiko coffee candies. You're welcome, Kopiko.

IMO the heart of the forest arc should have included characters we already knew, instead of dropping a handful of new characters each episode to never revisit them. Like have the Junk Lord be defensive over one of the pieces! Have Kit be selling them! Have Roger exist idk! Maybe I'm just a sucker for the s1-s2 side characters.
My thoughts exactly, it would've been a GREAT opportunity to explore the side characters we already knew or be a good excuse to give them episodes lol. And so I can have a break from trying not to get attached to one-time characters so I'm not sad over not seeing them again. *side eyeing Gordy, Keef, Sun-Chun and The Plush Kids*

Cartoon rec of the week:
Craig of the Creek
I haven't seen enough people talking about the show, so I'm mentioning it here. Absolute 10/10 cartoon. Just three kids, running 'round, making friends, running their own semi-sustainable community in the forest (there are some concerns about how much trash they leave there but ultimately they're better than most adults). Literally such a dream. they encourage each other to be emotionally healthy and they protect each other from "danger". Like they'll help each other achieve their dreams as they come (and new dreams show up pretty often because they're young kids).
And they're so funny! Like genuinely these kids are so earnest and intelligent and incredibly humorous and full of heart! They have full lives and they live them to the fullest out in nature after school, on the weekends, and in the summer. It's one of the best representations of found family I have ever seen in a cartoon, and I absolutely love it.
Also several of the writers behind the show are POC and queer (I think the head writers are all Black but I could be wrong), so you know that it was written well and the representation is awesome like I know that it should absolutely go without saying, but representation is much more than just showing BIPOC people on screen, and in terms of cartoons I haven't seen that many shows understanding that fact except maybe the Proud Family, Fat Albert, and a few others whose names will return to me once I've taken my ADHD meds. But the point is that Craig of the Creek gets it right. Most of the characters throughout the show (from what I've seen) are BIPOC, and you can tell that there are caring nods to BIPOC communities (primarily Black American communities), and more than that, that the writers know what they're talking about and are deeply familiar with and are a part of those communities. Craig, the titular character, is a young Black boy, and his family are middle class and ultimately very successful Black people. Kelsey (one of the main characters) is Jewish and Polish, and written with more complexity than having a one and done Hanukah celebration. The Creek's main business, a trading post, is run by Kit, a young Black girl with a love for economy and business. And many other characters are racial or ethnic minorities as well, and it warms my heart to see these characters done justice time and time again.
There's great subtle queer rep too, and you can tell it wasn't written just for the sake of representation, like it was thought out and intentional, and it worked beautifully. There are queer witches, and there are no labels applied to them, they're just allowed to exist with no explanations, happily in love with one another. There's a non-binary character later in the series (I'm only like 10 episodes in so I haven't met them yet but I've read amazing things about them). Kelsey also apparently identifies as a lesbian later in the series (I say "apparently" because I haven't done much reading so as to avoid spoilers, not because I am discounting her identity). On top of that, JP (one of the main characters) has a sister who is dating another girl.
There's also a significant amount of body positivity in the show, at least far than I've seen elsewhere. Not only do they openly say "all bodies are beautiful" and follow up on that by defending one another, there's also very little need to defend one another, because there's a very unspoken and deep respect in the Creek for things like body type, skin colour, disabilities, and so on. The kids of the creek, and their grown ups, are all different body types, and given their penchant for community and uplifting one another, it's no wonder they all seem confident in their bodies.
Not to mention the disability representation. There is a character later on in the series who is Black and deaf, and he not only speaks in Sign Language, but in Black American Sign Language. In addition, though unconfirmed, many of the kids in the creek embody aspects of various neurotypes. For example, the three main characters, Craig, Kelsey, and JP all come across as neurodivergent, with special interests, neurodivergent ways of thinking, and so on. Some have speculated that JP has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, which is a disability often comorbid with ADHD. Not to mention that all the kids in the creek embody different special interests, most of which would be considered weird or frowned upon in everyday society, but that are given the opportunity to shine and flourish in the Creek's accepting culture.
Take the Horse Girls for example, a small clique of girls who roleplay as horses in a pasture near the Creek, and of course many of their behaviours are played as jokes, but ultimately they are accepted and involved in many adventures because of their unique interests and abilities which are ultimately how they aid the rest of the Creek. Every kid is a useful and accepted part of the Creek, with the exception of the ranger scout kids, who are essentially the same as cops, who are often exploitative, rude, and disruptive to the community as a whole.
Ultimately, the show is one of love, friendship, community, and acknowledging differences as a natural and helpful part of life. On top of that, it's not copaganda! What more could you want?

HALLO! I bring more Sora content, specifically Sora x Omar content, if you aren’t a fan of oc x canon content just scroll down pls.
Also at the moment I haven’t ended the show, I’m in the middle of season two so some facts may feel inconclusive and it’s because they are.
Sora loves candy, honey, specially, so when the honeysuckles arrived to the trading tree they got an addiction to it, they tasted it and inmediately traded all of their belongings for more honeysuckles, when the flowers ended Sora offered themselves to go to a second expedition to the other side of the creek for more of those tasty flowers, not only for the trading tree but also to take some supplies home, but they got jump-scared by the self-claimed protector of the overpass: Omar.
Sure, he was attacking their floater. But he was so rad! like a cooler and modern version of his favorite character ever: Robin Hood. While Craig, JP, Kit and Kelsey tried to scape, Sora didn’t even move, they just stared like they were dumb.
At dinner time they told their mother all about this mysterious green poncho guy.
Sora admires Omar, and they’re constantly expressing it to him. As Omar and Sora grow closer Sora is constantly hugging him and grabbing his hands. Is not anything special to Sora since they are naturally affectionate and expressive, But Omar turns unusually red when this happens.
I’m planning to write more about them but I want to keep watching the series to understand more about Omar before doing so!
Extra: Sora asked their mom to dye their hair green just as the war between the two sides of the creek started. They were inspired by Omar’s Green poncho

HALLO!

Year of Animation Day 151: Craig of the Creek S4E11-20
Date: May 31, 2025
Day: 151
Content Watched: Craig of the Creek, Season 4, Episodes 11-20
Year: 2018-2025
Rating: PG-Y7
Run Time: 110 minutes
Hello internet, have I told you recently how much I love Craig of the Creek? Yes? Well, I'm going to tell you some more.
Because at long last, I have arrived at "Dodgy Decisions," aka the episode about Jackie, "The Arm," who is revealed here to be deaf and communicates by signing. Furthermore, from what I've read, Jackie uses Black ASL, and I appreciate that specificity--that the creators knew enough about Jackie to know he would use this dialect specifically.
This brings Creek up to four languages, except wait, there's more! Because Raj's grandmother only speaks Gujarati, bringing us up to five. And I love how the show differentiates Raj and Sewer Queen's living situations, considering Raj openly says he's not very good at Gujarati, but Sewer Queen seems to be fluent in Bisaya. I also think "Grandma Smugglers" is a nice story about immigration. And the Bollywood style episode was a nice homage.
Speaking of Sewer Queen, she does traditional dancing with Frisboy in "Craig of the Talent Extravaganza." I have Karen (an ethnic group originally from Myanmar) students who do traditional dances in which people move bamboo poles in and out and the dancers move in and out of them to the beat of the moving poles. I have never seen this kind of dancing represented in anything other than Craig of the Creek. And though Sewer Queen is not Karen (previous episodes indicate her family hails from the Phillipines), I imagine the Karen kids at my school would find it pretty neat to see traditional dancing like their own in an American TV show.
youtube
Oh, and "Lost and Found" introduces us to Salma, who I'm pretty sure is the third Muslim girl we've seen in the show, after Amina, who is friends with Bernard and the girl who often appears on Craig's side of the Creek. (I assume Salma is a different character, since she seems to be on the other side of the overpass, and she looks older.) This whole episode reminded me of Ruth Hogan's The Keeper of Lost Things, and I hope we get to see more of Salma because her lost and found is pretty fantastic, and she and Craig need to invent some things together.
I'll tell you the truth, I'm running off old notes here, so I can't say much about the animation in particular, but I wrote that I liked the "video game animation" in "Chrono Moss," which I'm assuming looks like a battle from Baulder's Gate or something like that. I really did enjoy this episode, and the fact that all these kids so perfectly act the roles of NPCs, down to repeating the same thing over and over. I also like Craig, Kelsey, and JP being classified as a mage, fighter, and bard respectively, and that the kids running the game agree that melee, range, a 6th grader makes a well-balanced team.
Well, one of my predictions has come true, at least in a sense, since the stump kids went looking for Kenneth at Elder rock. But they don't have a cube. But the elders did give us an additional clue to the Heart of the Forest--that it's a giant glowy puddle that grants you wishes (somehow, I think it won't be, though.)
I kind of wish I had seen "Backward Day" before I saw the solar eclipse last year. I'm really glad that this isn't what happened to me when I went, though. I particularly like backwards Kelsey, Kit, and Elder Mark (though JP was fun too--it felt like a different version of "Alternate Creekiverse.") Also, props to Craig for making boxes so they watch the eclipse safely.
And, finally, I have to mention Duane and Nicole being absolutely adorable in "The Anniversary Box." I also loved Jessica taking out Richard, and I consider this further proof that those two lovebirds have been raising their kids right.

my creeksona because why not!
name: bluebird
she got the name bluebird because of a pair of fake bird wings that are on her back that double as a “glider” (she can jump from pretty high and land safety cuz. acrobatics)
nobody knows her real name and even her parents call her bluebird or birdie
pronouns: any/all
age: 11
ethnicity: chinese-canadian
appearence:
dark blue hair with white-blond streaks, about mid-back-length. usually tied up into pigtails / astro buns
black eyes. void lookin iris colour
her arms and legs are usually covered in multicoloured rune-esque symbols ('magic')
she wears elf ear attachments with gold jewellery hanging from it
clothing / accessories:
a set of handmade blue bird wings. the main feathers are white, but the endings are blue (from where her name came from). folded up they're about the size of a backpack, but fully extended they're a little longer than her armspan
a headband with deer antlers during the festive months, the antlers have fairy lights on them
a black tank top with a picture of a pegasus on it (think chb, but inverted colours) with cutouts in the back for her wings
green overall-shorts. the pocket always has snacks in it
red high-tops with doodles scribbled all over, similar to the ones on her arms and legs
lots of bracelets, necklaces, and rings, including a set of dog tags
she has bedazzled freckles. the rhinestones are pink, gold, and a light blue. yes, she spends time putting them on weekly
she has a giant brown coduroy jacket that's got a lot of patches and mending on it (it was a gift from her granddad). the many pockets hold important items, such as magical sidewalk chalk and snacks. the jacket is usually tied around her waist, but in a pinch it doubles as a camouflaging cloak for the forest.
background:
bluebird was a court jester/performer for the tea timers before splitting off after eliza kept abusing her / treating her like a servant instead of a proper member of the tea-timers.
after that, she started working with kit as like a helper for the trading tree, helping hunt down people with debt and occasionally procuring harder to get trades. she also helped attract more kids to the trading tree by staging little performances in the clearing where kids could buy snacks and watch her.
there was a brief period of time where she was called a circus freak, in which she temporarily became an opp and started her own faction named the fae/lost kids. they became terrors of the creek for a couple of weeks, bringing forth an arc named the “blue death” where kids would walk into traps and get their stuff messed with.
eventually though, the stump kids and bluebird made up and the plague of blue death stopped. she retired from being the leader of the fae, passing it onto her second-in-command and best friend otto. bluebird officially joined the stump kids the day her, kit, craig, kelsey and jp went to get the honeysuckle. that's also the day they met omar.
picrew: (credits to makowka, doshiart, blob_the_alien, veluv_art and potatolord)
(bluebird before she dyed her hair; that plot point happened right before the capture the flag war)
other notes:
she lowkey needs glasses but refuses to get them
bluebird is a triplet! the other two (graham and zhiyan) are part of the paintballers and ninja kids respectively
she's one of six kids total, and the youngest out of everyone. she has two more older brothers and an older sister. sadly though, they've all outgrown the creek, with the oldest being kenneth's age
like me, bluebird is a canine therian. the wings and antlers are for decoration, she has a dog mask in the pocket of her coat at all times
she's covered in cuts and scrapes from roughhousing with her family and also general creek mishaps
#eventually her and omar get together because.#i fucking love omar he’s my goat#did i steal a little bit of a plot point from ty lee?#maybe#youll never know#cotg#craig of the creek#creeksona#craig of the creek oc#riddy's glitched garden
