Some helpful, basic guidelines for developing a consistent or thematic approach to naming villages or towns or cities in fiction.
And never forget, you can change it later . . . in fact, one can almost guarantee that the more village, town, or city names you come up with during the worldbuilding phase, the more likely you'll change one (or all) of them in due time.
GUIDE: NAMING A TOWN OR CITY
This post was originally from a FAQ, but since the original link is now defunct, I am re-posting it here.
There are many things to keep in mind when naming the town or city in your novel:
1) Genre/Theme/Tone
It’s very important to consider the genre and theme of your story when choosing a town name. Take these names for example, each of which indicates the genre or theme of the story: King’s Landing (sounds fantastical) Cloud City (sounds futuristic) Silent Hill (sounds scary) Sweet Valley (sounds happy and upbeat) Bikini Bottom (sounds funny) Radiator Springs (sounds car-related) Halloween Town (sounds Halloween-related) Storybrooke (sounds fairytale-related) 2) Time/Place It’s also important to consider the time and place where your story takes place. For example, you wouldn’t use “Vista Gulch” as a name for a town in Victorian England. You probably wouldn’t use it for a town in modern day North Carolina, either. Vista is a Spanish word and would normally be found in places where Spanish names are common, like Spain, Central and South America, the southwest United States (including southern California), Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Florida. 3) Size/Settlement Type An isolated town of 300 people probably won’t be Valley City, but a sprawling metropolis of 30 million could be called Windyville, because it could have started out as a small town and grew into a large city. 4) Geography Words like gulch, butte, and bayou tend to be regional terms. You probably wouldn’t find Berle’s Bayou in Idaho, or Windy Butte in Rhode Island. Words like mount, cape, and valley are dependent upon terrain. Most of the time, you won’t have a town named “mount” something unless there are hills or mountains nearby. You wouldn’t use “cape” unless the town was on a cape, which requires a large body of water. 5) History Is there a historical person or event that your town might be named after? The Simpsons’ hometown of Springfield is ironically named after its founder, Jebediah Springfield. Chattanooga, Tennessee is named after the Cherokee town that was there first. Nargothrond, in The Lord of the Rings, is an Elvish town with an Elvish name. 6) Combination of Words
person name + geographical term = Smithfield, Smith Creek
group name + geographical term = Pioneer Valley, Settlers’ Ridge
descriptive word + geographical term = Mystic Falls, Smoky Hill
person name + settlement type = Smithton, Claraville
landmark + settlement type = Bridgton, Beaconville

#umineko#umineko spoilers#ikuko hachijo#ikukos turn for a more serious piece... the old man has reigned for too long#now. INCREDIBLY LONG INCOHERENT TAGS RANT INCOMING FAIR WARNING HAS BEEN GIVEN:#it makes me so so sad how little discussion there is about specifically ikuko because imho she fits so neatly into a lot of the more#overarching Big Themes of the game in a way that i have not ever really seen people take notice of or point out in a meaningful way#like even just off of the top of my head. the significance of names and what it means to go by a name that's Not Yours (she has like 4+)#what it Means to be a witch how it represents a person's deepest insecurities and flaws & how its at its core a coping mechanism#the fact that it takes two to create a universe and trying to do it on your own anyways has the capacity to bring you intense misery#^ (how she's shown to be extremely dismissive of her own work and skill until a collaborator comes into her life and helps/encourages her)#and even the family/patriarchy/misogyny stuff that is so prevalent in the rest of the game comes back around to her. even her Only Friend#(young&stupid atp to be fair) remarks that shes Weird for being unmarried + the little she does say about her past invites the question of#to what extent her self-image stems from her family deeming her a freak outcast & effectively disowning her while celebrating her brothers#and i have lot in my mind about the witch thing specifically because i think her particular situation is very reflective of what umineko's#entire magic system and fantasy facet as a whole is meant to represent for an individual. from what little we see of (what is presumably)#her Real personality she is shown to be deeply self conscious in a way that is JARRINGLY diametrically opposed to both 1.) what we see in#featherine and 2.) what we see when she is acting as a Public Figure. because both of the above are very much purposeful acts that she is#putting on in order to obfuscate her true self. and i have always been very resolute & adamant about not totally equating her to featherine#not only because im very firmly in the camp of “featherine is the avatar of the Pen Name & tohya is part of her too” but also very much b/c#i feel very strongly that the stark differences between the two are very centrally relevant to her character & her psyche. as is the case#with most other witches featherine's personality traits serve to reveal/magnify a lot of ikukos inner workings by playing on her#insecurities/reversing them e.g. ikuko being very quick to downplay her skill/achievements becomes featherine being the COMPLETE opposite#to the point where she barely registers even other witches as living beings rather than just fun touys. BUT even though i do champion the#ikuko/featherine separation so hard i ALSO think it is purposefully relevant that at first glance the line between them seems so blurry#her introduction implying a more nebulous separation between her reality/fantasy counterpart is i think is an intentional move on her part#like it is part of the front she is putting up when acting as the Author. as opposed to Ikuko the person who we (in a way ironically very#similar to the way that the Real Battler is presumably only shown during the boatscene) only very briefly get to see take up screentime#which even on a meta level lines up very well with her apparent underlying nature as a like. extremely private largely reserved/shy person#hit tag limit but if by some miracle anyone is still reading this thank you... please see ikuko with the love she deserves... ok ily byeee

“things were so hard with dad in recent years...how did he go from paparapluie to pùre? i wish i could face him and understand, but while he was still here i didn't dare try to tell him [any of my feelings] and now...it's too late.” * paparapluie is a pun on the words papa and parapluie (umbrella) since the plush is a frog. pùre is the french word for 'father.'
#ml spoilers#ml s6 spoilers#miraculous spoilers#ml el toro de piedra#mledit#miraculous#miraculous ladybug#miraculous lb#miraculousedit#adrien agreste#adrienette#adrinette#my edits#fascinated at umbrellas constantly being a motif for protection in this show. the theme is “in the rain” because marinette fell for adrien#in the rain but he offered her an umbrella (an act of kindness and protection from the weather). next to how#adrien's father used a pun about umbrellas as his own nickname when adrien was younger and he was still caring for him as a dad should#but as he got older his father stopped protecting him so the nickname (and also any form of 'papa') fell through in favor of the#cold + formal + distant 'pùre.' this specific pun between parapluie and papa might also come from the french poem un papa by pierre ruaud#which is a poem about papas serving as protection and a sort of shelter for their children. so ig ml is saying gabriel started this way too#i think the fandom glosses over the complexity of adrien's feelings for his father bc in earlier seasons he defended + made excuses for him#part of this is because he was sheltered + didn't know better but it's also bc he DOES recall a time before his mother's illness grew worse#(some time between age 6 and the werepapas flashback) when he didn't have an absentee father. the show writes gabriel agreste#inconsistently: in earlier seasons he had moments of concern for his son before he became awful all the time. and these on/off moments give#adrien whiplash because he's left doing things like becoming a model for his father (i'm choosing to believe gabriel didn't use the rings#until later bc much of the earlier seasons make no sense if he was controlling adrien) in the hopes that they'll bond only to realize#his father still won't spend time with him even for a meal. s5 has gabriel making him pancakes (the wrong way) and asking about his day#and his friends and interests only for him to become even more controlling and mean. how he let him quit modeling only to create an#AI version of him without his consent and when he said that made him feel uncomfortable gabriel convinced him it was fine bc now he had#more free time! only to still control how he spent that free time. adrien didn't start grappling with these things until s5#and now he laments the things he never actually got to say about the papa he misses and the father he wished had unconditionally loved him

Sometimes I do think the hyperfocus on religious guilt, especially the hyperfocus on religious guilt pertaining to sexual behavior (with one particular romance taking up 90% of the fandom's concern here), is eclipsing the absolutely fascinating canonical relationship Henry has with God.
Henry's guilt, a complicated tangle of survivor's guilt and moral guilt, is never on clearer display than when he dreams of his parents. This dream is the face of how Henry feels about himself and the sins, moral and divine and cultural, he has committed. It always troubles me when I see people yelling at Henry's parents as if they were really there... and not recognizing this is insight directly into how Henry feels about what happened in KCD2.
Notice that he is deeply caught up on theft and revenge/wrath (even when he argues with his father/i.e. himself in his own defense).
Notice, too, that he has no apology to make about Hans (if romanced). Of even greater interest from a character analysis standpoint, neither of his dream-parents (the voice of his internal guilt and misgivings) spare more than a moment's surprise on it. Henry's mother immediately scolds Henry's father when he expresses surprise; down to the marrow of his dreams, Henry does not seem to feel badly, guilty, or conflicted about romancing Hans at all.
Henry's aversion to touching the dead in kcd1 and kcd2 (particularly when someone he deeply cares about does it) is period-place-typical. It is fascinating how he rationalizes with himself in different contexts and how he justifies or does not justify this.
Henry usually gravitates toward social pariahs out of genuine curiosity first, compassion second; I find this point (blended with the above point) especially interesting in the context of his work with Executioner Hermann from KCD1!
Henry's anger is extraordinary, especially in KCD1, and whether or not Henry comes to understand his anger has immense echoes into the "voice" of his guilt.
Henry has a curiously spotty religious knowledge; this always delights me, as he's had a dash of monk's education and grew up in a town without a church. "Crimbo" is a hilarious line, but in other ways, it is also nicely representative of the half-formed grip he has on religious philosophy.
Henry's furious outbursts of "you call yourself a Christian?" are almost exclusively tied to his outbursts in defense of the defenseless, and this is used as a call to moral shame, especially against militant men. I always think first of his genuinely furious attempt to interject when Kuno deliberately uses civilian women as bait in KCD1.
Henry at times seems incredibly confident in his personal relationship with God. I adore the quest A Sinful Soul for how it showcases this. In a direct prayer the player has limited control over, Henry addresses God as informally as one might address a neighbor he has a minor grievance with. He essentially tells God, "Look, I know what you said about this issue, but I also know that YOU know I'm right this time, so I'm gonna do it my way, cause I know you didn't exactly mean it the way you said it there. Thanks in advance - knew you'd agree with me." Henry believes in a God who makes individual exceptions based on what is moral; he also differentiates what is moral from what is godly, and seems certain that God also draws this distinction for Himself.
Fucking thrilling from a character development standpoint! Fucking thrilling in the breath before the Hussite rebellions.

Some character sheet-type things I made for my versions of Ingo and Emmet. At least these are kinda like guidelines I use for their personalities, if that makes sense.
Since I have a TON of files for WIPs, I keep losing the ones that I've made before for them so at least I won't lose them here...(^///^)

amid ai slop and garbage remakes, i do think its cool that the two best movies of the year so far are painstaking labours of love with original narratives about how authenticity and passion in art (especially music) can be healing and nurturing forces that evil will seek to corrupt and replicate and steal.

"Haha Dream BBQ is so random and incomprehensible" "did they take drugs to make this lol" "you're actually not meant to understand anything in this series it's ok" "Joel G just makes up stuff on the spot based on what would be funny" "it's just random for random's sake" "is this AI" "stop theorising, it's not that deep" SHUT UPPPPPPPPPP

#ena dream bbq#ena joel g#random art does not exist. all human made art is made with intention.#like. sure. ena is intentionally surreal and aburdist and weird. and im sure some things were less thought out#but to say its all just random bullshit does SO much disservice to the creators behind this project#and disservice to your OWN intelligence in giving up and refusing to work those braincells of yours to create your own interpretation#like. There Are Things To work with here. there are a Lot Of Things#you just have to actually Think and connect the pieces and do introspection on what this Means to YOU#like. you dont wanna think hard. fine. if you wanna just enjoy the experience thats fine too#but then you have to still ackowledge that youre getting SOMETHING out of this (unless youre actually not and are just a hater)#even if its just emotionally. even if its jus unconsciouslly#there Is Meaning There#its just not linear#so think about it!!! thats whats fun about this series!!!#it forces everyone to think about it instead of just following the one 'canon'!!!!#there probably isnt one right answer here!!!#but that doesnt make it any less valuable!!!!#just. auuuughh#i have a lot of thoughts about this#the ena team would not put in this much effort and creativity and symbolism and themeing just for shits and giggles#ok ill stop being a hater now. and I WONT go in the opposite direction and start wining about how a lot of theories (on youtube at least)#seem to ignore the more emocionally significant and symbolic themes in favour of basic or emotionally shallow takes.....#ggrhrgrh (through gritted teeth)... everyones interpretation is valid.. everyones interpretation is valid#whatevr. im just rambling. idk. i hope you get what i mean#negative#fandom critical#my own post

The guitar! The guitar belonging to the Twins’ abusive father and passing it onto Sammie! The one that to Smoke represents a generational curse and something they should shun and bury. He and Stack couldn’t cut the pain out of themselves, nor the struggles they’ve experienced as Black men in America, but Smoke thinks he can prevent it from being spread, if only Sammie will give up the Blues, become a respectable musician, and bury that fucking guitar.
Passing on the guitar is indicative of the older generation passing down trauma and history, but it’s also providing tools of transformation. Smoke and Stack couldn’t make anything of the guitar, nor spin their pain into art, but Sammie could.
In Sammie’s hands, that curse, the pain they carry becomes music and connection. Sammie has a way to process their suffering and struggle, and sings about love, sings about his own strained relationship with his father, and sings about the pull he feels between propriety and passion. He sings about culture. The guitar is more than just their family history, it’s their people’s history, and while Sammy cannot erase history, neither can he ignore it; he refuses to bury the guitar.
The idea Smoke pushes Sammie toward is that if it’s possible, it’s a blessing to cast off our painful, ugly history. To escape that history is to find freedom in the world.
But Sammie disagrees. He inherits the same history as them, the same connection to the evil of his uncle, the same ancestry and the guitar. Instead of running from it, trying to assimilate and be a ‘proper’ Black man as Smoke insists, he leans into his heritage, leans into all that impropriety, that history, and rebuilds that fucking guitar. The haunting instrument that’s brought them so much trauma and trouble, that Sammie set aside for so long—it’s been tucked away in a case as he aged, but was never let go of. It’s always ready to be played, always within arms reach. His pain, his past, his people, Sammie carries them with for the rest of his life.
#providing both history/trauma and the tools of transformation is also seen with Delta Slim#he recalls Rice’s murder and goes from this pained mourning into an impromptu song#I’m never going to get over that moment. it was so indicative of the themes of the film#and just. the guitar as a connection to your heritage and history.#yes. Black Americans have a lot of painful and traumatic history#but that’s not all there is. cultural identity is to be found even in resilience and in the pieces that formed out of suffering#and all the joy and power of creation that there is#ther has been creation and innovation after enslavement—marked by Old Sammie taking up electric guitar and all the other performers#but that was created with an awareness of the continuum. rock from jazz and blues and folk and spirituals.#to deny the painful part of history as Smoke wants Sammie to do—even in the name of a better life—is to assimilate and deny innovation#the thing is. I don’t think they’re doomed. Smoke just has a bit of a pessimistic mind.#Smoke thinks they’re trapped by his father’s evil. trapped by evil history. Sammie shows they’re not.#Sammie proves the coexistence of pain and joy. joy and innovation through suffering#it’s mad brilliant#also the guitar? Sammie keeps it under his bed. a safe spot to keep it but also like a monster#the history we hide away even for safe keeping. that which we only let out when we need to use it#sinners#sinners 2025#sinners (2025)#sinners spoilers#sinners meta#sinners analysis#my post#sinners 2025 analysis
