The writer
I hear the voices.
They tell me what to write.
It starts as a whisper, then comes a crescendo.
Myriads of voices pleading, begging.
They want to see the light.
It's lonely and scary to be forgotten, to never have lived at all.
It's hard to follow one, it hurts to leave the others behind.
(For now)
They shout. They want to come out. They want to be free.
I hear the voices.
I'll tell their stories.
Bleed them out of my chest myself.
Until they are silent and I
Am hoarse.

One of my favorite parts of the job is letting the angry wives, siblings, best friends, or what-have-you kill the patient.
Ah, nothing is funnier than watching the uncertainty morph into pure joy as they realize that they are allowed to participate in the health of their loved one in the most unorthodox way possible.
I used to do it myself, you know. Taking a knife or any kind of object that could be used as a fatal weapon from a startled onlooker and doing the deed quickly but efficiently (I do value efficiency above all).
After years of it though, the novelty wore off and that got boring fast.
Now, I find its much more enriching for everyone involved in my profession to allow others to experience their first taste of murder.
Oh, and sure I've been responsible for a few wannabe murderers turning into serial killers, but I just consider that a hazard of the job just like anything else.
I mean, what are they gonna do, sue me for malpractice?
What I find really fun though, is watching the shock and horror on the nosy onlookers faces when I have to do the job myself. They never expect that when I ask for a knife or a bludgeoning object that I'm about to put the poor sod dying on the street out of their misery before resuscitating them and sending them off good as new.
Ethical necromancy really is my favorite line of work and I wouldn't trade it for any other.
You are a necromancer doctor. If someone is ill, you must wait for them to die before they can be healed, causing quite the ruckus whenever you ask a bystander for a weapon to do the job yourself.

You can catch a thread of yourself in new productions. You resent the whole process, but you can see where they snatched up little parts of you. This spell of paranoia, the Latino first impression, lame jokes because fuck you. You edit yourself farther and farther down. You used to work so hard, pour so much of yourself into the world. Now you're getting good at half-assed bullshit. You're getting good at sucking.
The MC is you - girl you, boy you. Maybe the director is extra creative, and the MC really doesn't look or act like you. But several episodes in, it's undeniably you. You are the reliable rizz chugging along in the background.
And then you find this old long-running show that was made years ago back when you cared, and they are literally you. It is you. He's more you than you are you right now. I remember that body. I grew up in that body. That's my body.
I was a teenage girl thinking I actually do like being a man in that body. Yeah, I actually like this a lot more.
Oh man, and the hair. All the embarrassing ways it fell around my face. He has that too! That was a lifetime ago! That hair.
This is the way the world used to look. Oh yeah. How it used to feel.
My ex vaguely looks like the other one. Perfect sculpted pout. Same hairstyle. Unreal.
It all kind of bled through.
Actors can get really creepy if you let them. If they can embody someone you care about. It's why I switched to cartoons. An animator doesn't have as much claim over a drawing as an actor does over his body. I've learned to stay away from actors. Musicians, too.
But this - someone's walking around out there in my body. It's more my body than his. He's alive. I could meet him. Shake hands with my body.
I suffered in that body. Had my first lascivious gawky stabs at love in that body. Was bored out of my skull in that body. Moved around the world and felt alright.
Asshole. Give it back.

The Color of Sorrow
(You guessed it- another creative writing exercise! This time we were asked to sort of combine the last three things we worked on and basically write found poetry about painting our dream home with pain paint. If you couldn't tell, I really enjoyed class today)
In this place of safety, of gathering,
of comfort and love, I have space to store
treasures, to keep dreams and to share secrets.
But the walls are bare and need painting, so
I pry off the lids from buckets of hurt,
lift my brush and get to work. It goes on
easy enough but comes off just the same-
temporary- and yet, the walls are stained.
I make sure to coat the door just so that
any visitors know what to expect.
When I grow tired of the task at hand,
I rinse my brushes, put away the cans.
I take a deep breath, all my tears now spent,
and try to wash the paint marring my skin.

Upon close inspection, realised this could be a nice fit for @flashfictionfridayofficial's prompt from last week, so this is what it is now!
~~**~~
"You know, there's a shooting star."
"Where?"
"Right here, on the corner of your eyes. How did it get there?"
"It started growing there the first time I laid eyes on you."
"Really?"
"Uhum."
"And what will you do with it?"
"The same thing everyone does with falling stars. Make a wish."
"And what will you wish for?"
"That it doesn't hurt too much when you leave me."
"And why would I leave you?"
"I don't know, but the star will only fall when tears come, and I will only cry if you leave me."
"We don't cry only from sadness. What if they are happy tears?"
"Don't be silly. Everyone knows that's not how stars in your eyes work. You can only make a wish when they go out."
"That's true..."
"Yeah..."
"...Maybe we'll be the first ones."
"...Maybe."
"Now, now, stop crying, or your star will fall before its time."
"I wish it didn't have to fall at all."
"Yeah, me too."
"But it will."
"No, it won't. I'll do my best so it won't."
She looked up into her eyes, and knew.
"Now, don't be silly."

12 Writing Exercises to help develop your character and their voice.
Editors note - There's a lot of boring writers drivel. So, to spare you from the headache if you're not interested, your characters individual voices and personalities are important for engaging stories and interesting plots. You can skip down to the end for the exercises.
Think about the people you know, the people you love. What's one thing they have in common, besides the obvious? They're all uniquely different. Everyone in the world is different in some way, even in media. Books and movies all have unique sounding characters that are different from each other. In Harry Potter, for example, All of the characters have their own voice, even the Weasley twins are different in their own ways.
Complex and unique characters that sound different, interact and speak differently, make for engaging books and dynamics.
I don't know anybody who would want to read a 50,000 word novel about two boring characters, who're exactly alike, and talk in the same monotonous tone. You can have a character who is "boring." who speaks monotonously and still have an interesting novel that people would read.
Having different characters who come together to create funny, interesting, or weird dynamics makes for a readable piece. Take your monotonous character, by themselves, they're kind of boring. They're not engaging to follow. But, introducing different characters to come and interact with your "boring" character, creates funny and memorable dynamics.
Think the anime Saiki K, or Veronica Sawyer from Heathers. If you took only those two characters, and stripped away all of the background characters, they wouldn't make for very interesting stories. Saiki would be happy, living his days in peace and quiet. Veronica would just be a normal edgy high school girl. But if you bring the side characters back, you bring the story and their conflicts back. Saiki goes back to being annoyed by his weird and goofy friends, wishing for peace and quiet. Veronica goes back to being tormented by JD and the group dynamic in the Heathers clique.
These stories utilize background characters to create conflict in their main characters' lives, and makes fun and interesting stories and dynamics with them.
Without further ado, here are 12 exercises to help you develop your characters, and get you thinking.
Ask your character what they want, and have them monologue about it.
Think about who, in your life, does your character remind you of.
Ask yourself, What does my character want, and what does my character need? How do they conflict with each other, and how does this affect my story?
A good exercise to help you write characters interacting, and practice dialogue is to do the ABCD exercise.
The ABCD exercise is writing a full page, or 500 words, of dialogue between two characters, character a and character b, talking about what they think character c thinks of character d. Then, write another page depicting how character c actually interacts with character d.
Write journal entries from the pov of your character.
Think about your character's habits, nervous tics, or tells, and write out a page where they do those things.
Think about something your character holds dear to them, and give the item a backstory.
Think about how your character interacts with other characters, and write a page for each interaction.
Think about a belief or opinion your character has, and write a page of dialogue, where your character is explaining their belief, and why they believe in it, to another character.
Write a page about your character reminiscing, or talking, about a cherished memory from their past, or childhood.
Write a page of dialogue about character a telling character c about character b, whom c has never met before, what kind of things do they say? What do they think of b? Then write another page from character c’s point of view, what are they thinking? How do their thoughts of b change? What do they think of character a? How do they imagine character a and b’s relationship?
Write a page about a character being forced into a situation with their greatest fear. Then, if you want to go a step further, write a page of the same thing, but introduce another character that the first holds dear to them, or wants to protect.

i love when words fit right. seize was always supposed to be that word, and so was jester. tuesday isn't quite right but thursday should be thursday, that's a good word for it. daisy has the perfect shape to it, almost like you're laughing when you say it; and tulip is correct most of the time. while keynote is fun to say, it's super wrong - i think they have to change the label for that one. but fox is spot-on.
most words are just, like, good enough, even if what they are describing is lovely. the night sky is a fine term for it but it isn't perfect the way november is the correct term for that month.
it's not just in english because in spanish the phrase eso si que es is correct, it should be that. sometimes other languages are also better than the english words, like how blue is sloped too far downwards but azul is perfect and hangs in the air like glitter. while butterfly is sweet, i think probably papillion is more correct, although for some butterflies féileacán is much better. year is fine but bliain is better. sometimes multiple languages got it right though, like how jueves and Πέμπτη are also the right names for thursday. maybe we as a species are just really good at naming thursdays.
and if we were really bored and had a moment and a picnic to split we could all sit down for a moment and sort out all the words that exist and find all the perfect words in every language. i would show you that while i like the word tree (it makes you smile to say it), i think arbor is correct. you could teach me from your language what words fit the right way, and that would be very exciting (exciting is not correct, it's just fine).
i think probably this is what was happening at the tower of babel, before the languages all got shifted across the world and smudged by the hand of god. by the way, hand isn't quite right, but i do like that the word god is only 3 letters, and that it is shaped like it is reflecting into itself, and that it kind of makes your mouth move into an echoing chapel when you cluck it. but the word god could also fit really well with a coathanger, and i can't explain that. i think donut has (weirdly) the same shape as a toothbrush, but we really got bagel right and i am really grateful for that.
grateful is close, but not like thunder. hopefully one day i am going to figure out how to shape the way i love my friends into a little ceramic (ceramic is very good, almost perfect) pot and when they hold it they can feel the weight of my care for them. they can put a plant in there. maybe a daisy.
#warm up#writeblr.#i am not going to personally comment on the pineapple debate#some things are too big for me.#maybe we could have everything on earth choose their own names.#wouldn't that be fun#it is a creative writing exercise. okay. ily#''why only these languages?'' ..... bc i dont know every language#sorry :(#PLEASE leave me comments about what words u think are correct. i love learning them#btw! this isn't saying these are the most BEAUTIFUL words for it... just the words that are the most CORRECT#like i quite like the word ''keynote'' as mentioned. it's got a lot of fun sounds in it.#but it is not CORRECT.#''gloaming''' is interesting and fun and poetic but it is NOT correct . evening is MORE correct#but less beautiful.#does that make sense?

Someone Said Something Stupid
These words are stupid
So am I
Let me use them to express my crudeness
My lack of etiquette, IQ and wisdom
Let me share my dumb ideas
My stupid verbalization and utterances
Allow me to show the world
Just how incredibly ignorant I am
Don't have pity on me
I am the worst
I am beneath you
Look away from me
Shut me up
Someone should
Know this, if spoken rarely...
Even silly words can seem profound
Shut me up
So I can display a wise veneer
The louder the voices scream to shut me up
The more credible my stupid words become
Now I am heard
Thanks to you
Today, let my own words construct the noose
The silencer, the tool
My earned weapon of self destruction
By this and through my own ignorance and "fuckery"
I can one day be hung
Then you will have your day
Retribution and glee as you hide
Your thinly disguised smile
As you think about that precious
"I told you so" moment
You were sure I was too confident.
You tried to warn me.
It must be great being right all of the time.
Appearing to hold such wisdom and depth
Always doing the right thing
Never failing
Never struggling
I used to want to be just like you
Standing quietly wearing a facade
One of understanding and wisdom
But do you know?
Do you see?
Can you comprehend?
Do you understand at all?
The truth we both know is...
You are better at hiding your struggles
You have others devoted to making mistakes disappear
That is a very fortunate circumstance you are in
Do not take it for granted
One day, you could find yourself alone,
Unprotected by your "peers"
You stepped outside of their comfort zones
Now they have left you to your own words and devices
Before long, you notice their absence
When you do see "your people" again
The awkward quick diversion of their eyes is easily noticeable
You might wonder what you did
You could be the next target of the crowd
You could be hearing the sounds of screams and protests
Over something shitty or stupid you may have said
The most maddening of all could be
That you may never learn what it is you did wrong
You may have done nothing wrong at all.
Maybe it was just a test.
Shut me up.
It is probably for the best right?
Who knew a larynx could be such a dangerous device?
#The dangerous larynx#Someone said something stupid#Let me sound stupid if I want to#Freedom to say dumb things#creative writing exercise
