I'm not entirely convinced this is the *best* beginner tutorial for solving a rubik's cube, but it is really cool from a technical standpoint
Not only does it solve cubes with any number of layers, but it does so using only two (pretty simple) algorithms (plus the mirror of one of them)
I also love the attention to detail with how the algorithms are chosen; the first alg is usually R' D' R D in beginner tutorials, but they went with D' R' D R since they're using a variation on niklas to permute the corners and D' R' D R solves that case faster. And speaking of niklas, they're again using the inverse so that it makes solving the centers more familiar
#cubing#rubik's cubes#okay so it's just spamming commutators#i still think it's cool#also the centers tutorial needs some work imo#i might make a flowchart-type thing for people who just want to solve their cube without having to memorize a bunch of stuff#i feel like this method could work well for something like that

Poll request!! Best 90’s rapper?
Sorry that I couldn't include all the rappers here, there are simply too many legends to choose from (and tumblr's 12-option limit won't let me)! Reblog or reply if your favorite isn't on the list-- I know there are a lot of great choices missing from here.

Time to plant the poppy seed ice cubes!

They've been in the freezer for two weeks now, stratifying. I've never had any luck sowing poppy seed in the fall so I hope this method works.
I moved the wood chips away to make a row, added some old potting soil and a sprinkle of alfalfa meal (to counteract any nitrogen-tying up by the few wood chips that accidentally get mixed in), and lightly cultivated the top two inches or so of soil to mix everything together.
I then made a 1/2" furrow and sowed some parsnip and calendula seed all along the row so even if the poppies don't work, I still have something growing.
Then I placed the ice cubes full of poppy seeds about 8" apart on top of the soil and pressed in to seat them. I marked the spots with red straws cut in half--don't want to weed any unfamiliar seedlings and mess this up.

Watered everything in because of the parsnips/calendula and replaced the row cover to keep the birds and squirrels out of it. Crossing my fingers that the bugs don't make off with the seeds, but not much I'm willing to do about that. After the seedlings are sized up I'll move the wood chips back over as mulch (may use some chopped straw in the meantime after germination).
Bonus spring flower pic:

The azalea hedge next to the walk up to the porch is lightly blooming. They got confused by the extended warm season and had a flush of blooms in November, so there's not as many flowers this spring.

I know, I know… two days in a row of just shapes. But again, it’s important to practice basic shapes. This shape with the circles from yesterday can be combined to draw a face. At least that’s what I’m told.

i know the current way is better but man...i do miss being able to apply layers to individual weapons
#will.txt#don't get me wrong i'm happy to finally have layered weapons! especially for palicos!#but in this case i prefer world's method to rise's/wilds's#if i wanted to look at the same weapon all day i wouldn't main bow and dual blades (<- joking based on a nugget of truth)#i wish there was a way to have both systems somehow! but alas#on a positive note it DOES give me an excuse to make every bow/DB/hammer eventually. i must have The Cube

I gave the old mason jar garlic peeling trick a shot—some cloves cooperated, others... not so much. So I went with a better plan: peel the garlic, blend it, spread it into a freezer bag, score it into cubes, and freeze.
Now I’ve got ready-to-use garlic squares that go straight from freezer to pan—no peeling, no mess, no wasted time.

#i tried to follow a tutorial for the roux method#i have no idea wtf he's saying#i guess ill just have to get faster at cfop lol#i do think i'm fairly fast already (my average is 40secs)#(my pb is 27.87s hihi)#rubiks cube

Hey look, some of the 10 year old extra-dwarf pak choi seed that I just threw into this earthbox has come up after several weeks.

It's a blurry pic, sorry. I counted 10 seedlings, so it was definitely worth doing. They seem to be clustered on one end so far (it IS where more sunlight hits in the cold frame) so I think I'm just going to shove some green onion ends into the other end to regrow.

Kale seedlings just mostly hanging out in their Tidy Cats bucket planter. Hoping this spate of warm weather will spur some actual growth.

The three transplanted strawberries from yesterday sporting their wire mesh trashcan to protect against wildlife digging until they're established. The goal is to fill that bed with strawberries so I need to look up how to encourage runners over berry production for this year. Alternatively i wonder how hard it would be to harvest then grow the seeds...

Decided I'd better remove the straw and burlap covering my two earthboxes of peppermint today and yep, I was right to do so. Will still leave them in the protected alcove on the ground so I can recover if needed. Probably will give them their spring sprinkle of fertilizer too.
Almost finished with pea planting, but that will be a separate post.
I've also filled an ice cube tray half full in preparation of using the "ice cube method" for sowing poppies. Tomorrow after it freezes I'll sprinkle the seeds on top of each cube, fill it the rest of the way up with water, and stick it in the freezer again for 2-3 weeks to cold-stratify. Then you just plop the ice cubes where you want to grow poppies and push them into the earth slightly and wait. I've never had success sowing poppy seed in the fall, so it'll be great if this works. I got the seed for free by asking a nice gardener if I could have one of the seedheads off their poppies while I was walking to the library. I always carry a supply of small ziplock bags with me everywhere for exactly this reason. I get so many free seeds this way.
Other garden tasks for today include chopping the old leaves off the liriope before the new leaves can get in the way and pulling the little metal tower cage/obelisk out--it needs a wire brushing and rustoleum painting before the clematis covers it because it's rusty and flaky and not in an attractive interesting way.
#gardening#part one#germination of old seed#protecting perennial plants#from weather#and from wildlife#ice cube method for poppies#i love poppies but i've always had to buy transplants#and they've refused to reseed or survive the winter#the seed i got is the ornamental kind but if this works then i'll buy some breadseed poppy seed too#it's currently 80F (ugh)#which means i'm sweating#but it's good for repainting stuff i suppose#i also moved all the seedling trays outside to get some real sun
