Curtiss Zeus is a descendant of Confederate motorcycles
The American company Confederate Motors ceased to exist. To be reborn under a new name: now is the Curtiss Motorcycles! According to the head of the company Matt Chambers, the reasons for that were two. First, the company from southern Alabama started to lose clients from-for “slave” image: the once romantic Rebel name after race riots in America became, to put it mildly, not very popular. And secondly, the leadership of the company thought that will not do anything more outstanding than the 150-HP model Confederate FA-13 Combat Bomber: the closure of the former legal entity was dedicated to the sale of the last of this bike with a price of 155 thousand dollars.
The new name was chosen in honor of the American pioneer Aviator Glenn Curtissa. A hundred years ago, he was engaged not only in aircraft and aircraft engines, but also built cars and motorcycles: an unofficial speed record of 219 km/h, established in 1907 by the motorcycle Certosa aviation V8 engine, lasted 23 years. Apparently, the ex-confederates managed to negotiate the rights to the brand with the heir of the company of Glenn Curtissa is alive today and still concern Curtiss-Wright. Because their products did not overlap — firm Curtiss Motorcycles now deals only with electric motorcycles!
However, in the appearance of the first model of the Curtiss Zeus, was presented at the Quail Motorcycle Gathering in Carmel California, a lot in common with the Confederate motorcycles: typical front fork, the abundance of aluminium plus no less vicious. Technical stuffing of the newly made firm borrowed from the reputable on the market of electric motorcycles company Zero Motorcycles. However, it came to the layout creatively.
Firstly, the scheme gasoline engine V-Twin (V-shaped two-cylinder motor) gave way to new — E-Twin: two electric motors rotate one shaft, and their total output is 173 HP and 393 Nm. And the main thing — the engineers of the Curtiss refused to copy the layout of the petrol bikes, sensibly deciding that the electric components of the power plant can be sited more conveniently. So Zeus to this strange location of the chain in the rear wheel drive and a complete lack of simulation of the gas tank. Plus new features: built-in plugs directly into the running lights and turn indicators.
The prototype has Li-ion traction battery with capacity of 14.4 kWh, but it will at least not your only option. Here we will have a new sensation: if you believe the head of the company, the Curtiss motorcycles will offer not only at exorbitant prices — a suitable car for every budget. Of course, a set of components and specifications at the most affordable electric motorcycles will not impress. Do they retain the characteristic of Confederate appearance? Will know in a couple of years: the beginning of sales of a new line of motorcycles is expected in 2020.
