it’s official!! First, Best Destiny -- Part 1 by the lovely @ophelia-j finally has the physical form that it deserves!! here’s a little photoshoot of the finished product (:

the table of contents!

*note: i did remove the chapter notes to format it more like a “real” book. (looking back, i honestly wish i hadn’t because i do always love reading those!) because i removed the notes, i decided to include which episode/movie the chapters follow in the table of contents!!

the chapter headers!! THEORETICALLY it says t'hy'la in vulcan script.

and then i have this TBC page that i stuck in right before the epilogue!

this is such a small detail but it honestly might be one of my favorite parts. i did my very best to emulate a real book's design, so i have this fun little barcode/QR code at the very back. and!! the QR code links to the actual Ao3 story!! how cool is that???

conclusion!!

throughout every step of the bookbinding process i was mentally like "this is gonna be the step where it ALL FALLS APART" and??? it never did??? like? i just made a 900 page book??? that's crazy guys.

anyways!! i am so, so, SO thrilled that i am now the proud owner of a physical copy of First, Best Destiny -- Part 1.

could you possibly do someone with top surgery scars/a binder? similar to the chest ones you posted for pride month. if you do the binder, could you do a version that represents pain from binder? maybe with the text “binding :(“. just spitballing here!

Bind of my favourite fic Darkness Exist to Make Light Truly Count by @aquaquadrant

This is my first bind ever and it was a really fun process! Recently my cousin @haxkattpress has got into book binding and has done many amazing projects! So on my visit with her we did this project together!

For the typeset I wanted to do something really artistic like Rapunzel. To do this I went to the tangled art book and used Claire Keane work that was used for the drawings around Rapunzel’s tower! But to make the drawings work with the fic a bit more I went in and drew Varian in a few since it’s not just a story about Rapunzel.

For the book itself we went with a nice mint green and pink and white marble end papers! And to make it even more artistic we speckled the sides with three different colours to really add character.

The illustration on the cover was also one of Claire Keane concept arts for the film. I thought it was really beautiful and would be a nice touch especially with the bird theme.

Maybe one day if there’s the working for a future bind of the fic since I just went up to chapter forty the end of act three I could use the illustration again but give it a new look. Here’s a mock up idea of what it could like.

This bind is for personal use only and not for profit. I will love to keep it on my shelf with my other books. The fic can be found on ao3! Thank you AquaQuadrant for writing the fic I hope you like the bind and hope to do others like this one day!

Six of Crows custom edition

Front and back covers both designed and created by me :) they're a little bit messy but overall I'm quite proud of them

The custom edition was a birthday gift for @bohemian-rhapsody-in-blue and is fully annotated with all my thoughts and feelings on the book, including some hand drawn sketches of each of the crows (pictures under the cut)

The Crow drawings are all based on their actors from the show with some mixed in elements of inspiration from their book counterparts

Hellow Fire Emblem enjoyers.

As this blog's name suggests, we are fishing for interest - specifically, we are thinking of making a Fire Emblem RP group & want to know what people would be interested in.

The set information regarding this hypothetical potential group is as follows:

It would be for all Fire Emblem games (17 main series + Heroes & Cipher OCs)

It would be forum-based (via a host such as ProBoards)

It would not have any activity requirements

It would not be in any canon setting (so no backdrop such as taking place in Heroes' Askr)

The setting we do end up with will be one set world designed by the group-runners so that everyone can exist on neutral ground (as FE's games exist within many different worlds within canon)

Past that, everything is up in the air! We're currently thinking of a couple of AU settings that could work and want to know what would snag the most interest, and have attached a poll to this.

If anyone wants to know more about any of these settings, or how this group would go, or if you have any other suggestions for settings, our ask box is open and we'd be happy to answer any questions!

More information regarding each of the options we're currently brainstorming is below under a readmore, as well.

FANTASY-BASED FARM SIM:

Inspired by the Rune Factory series & Fields of Mistria, as well as Story of Seasons (though you do not need any knowledge from any of these games to take part!) Take your favourite Fire Emblem character & place them in an idyllic, low-stakes fantasy setting that works to blend nature and magic together, living day-to-day life however you'd like them to. Is your muse a soldier within canon? Absolutely applicable here. Want to make them a baker with the best Recipe Bread this side of the kingdom? Go right ahead instead. It's up to you! It'd be relatively easy to take how a character exists within Fire Emblem canon & work them into this setting, because it's going from one fantasy-style to another!

MODERN AU:

Have you thought about how your favourite characters would be in a setting completely stripped away from its setting? With this setting, the cast of Fire Emblem's many games would be tossed into the modern hustle-and-bustle of city life. (May still come with bits of fantasy such as magic, may be wholly mundane. Undecided yet.) Want to force Berkut to work retail at the local Archanean Eagle? Want to force Frederick to work a 9-5 office job? Want to make Yunaka an influencer? Go right ahead. The world is your oyster. This setting would also come with the bonus of being able to easily treat the forum setting for RP as an actual online forum, without needing to handwave online posting capabilities!

UNIVERSITY AU:

A very specific sector of a modern AU expanded and focused upon school life! Think Luthier minmaxing his course schedule to tackle every single credit possible, or Eirika hosting study sessions in the library, or Soren being the most unwilling student tutor available with slots open in his schedule. This setting would establish a college town with plenty of potential stores for anyone who wants to be a part of the setting but doesn't want to be a student or professor specifically, & plenty of courses designed so you can - if you want - actually build your muse's schedule. The forum setting could also easily be used for online posting purposes as a school board!

ok so i just finished my book cover for First, Best Destiny - Part 1 by the amazing @ophelia-j !!

admittedly i was going to wait until i actually attached the text block to the cover before i posted this haha, but i was SO excited after making this cover that i decided to just post it and then update with the finished product later!!

this book is absolutely embedded in my soul, and words cannot even describe how gorgeously it’s written. it’s a book that made me realize - hey, the adventure doesn’t end as you grow old.

anyways!!! here’s all of my other bookbinding steps for anyone interested.

please note that i am an AMATEUR hobbyist. please do not actually use this as a tutorial.

oh also!! bookbinding terminology will have a * by it which will be explained at the end in order to make this flow better. i’ll also link the tutorials i used at the end of this for anyone interested.

1) Formatting the document! I downloaded the original text as a PDF, and then designed a cover page, grabbed some art from the internet (i know, frowned upon, but this is just a personal copy so it is what it is), and then designed a table of contents and chapter icons!!

*side note! i added which episodes each chapter follows to the table of contents (pictured below) as this book was written as an accompaniment to TOS and the movies.

2) Next, I printed out all NINE HUNDRED PAGES??? admittedly i could have done it in less if I’d used a bigger page size, but sending things out to be printed is expensive so we made do. after printing, i folded them into signatures*.

*there’s an additional note about the paper i used at the end

3) punching out holes in all the signatures! although not technically necessary, I honestly don’t think i would’ve been able to sew this behemoth without doing it.

4) sewing the pages into a real!! actual!! book!! this was the part i was most nervous about. i’ve NEVER attempted to sew anywhere near this large of a book before, so i tried out a new method of sewing in hopes of making it a bit more sturdy. we won’t know if it worked until this book endures some wear and tear, but i’m pretty optimistic!

5) next up is glueing the spine! this is where it really hit me that a lot of bookbinding is just…glueing shit together. later i also added cardstock to the spine in hopes of helping it adhere to the cover better, and a book headband* for decoration.

5) now we’re onto the book cover!! they only sell bookboard in minor bulk around here, so we’re not even gonna discuss how much bookboard i now own… anyways! i glued the faux leather onto the bookboard and then let that dry.

6) last up! off to the cricket! a huge thank you to my friend for letting me borrow her cricket AND supplies! anywho, this is where i designed my cover art. i then adhered the design to the cover. after this step, i realized i…definitely need some kind of sealant - so, if any more seasoned bookbinders have suggestions for this i am all ears!!

all in all, this was a super fun project, and a great way to kill some time while i recover from surgery! i absolutely plan to bind the sequel at some point, but that may be a…ways away. i’m a STEM major and school starts back up soon so…time will be in short supply lol!

*signature: group of sheets folded in half, to be worked into the binding as a unit.

*book headband: just look up a picture if you’re curious because tumblr says i can't add any more pictures lol.

*about the paper!! i actually got it from a local specialty paper store, but if you want something similar i've heard amazon has some good bookbinding alternatives!

at the moment, and for the foreseeable future i am saying no. just because there are copies of ahb! circulating around SEVERAL websites and vendors being sold for oodles and oodles of dollars. despite my requests for the sellers to stop.

i have had people (etsy vendors) in the past lie to me and say they've made "too many personal handbound copies and are only selling those extra ones" which ,,, was obviously a lie. also they were getting the copies through lulu and selling them just btw.

i have also had people tell me that they are binding them and selling them to others for personal use but not making profit off of them even though they're selling art heist for over $100 a book. so. yeah. another lie

so, sorry! but yeah!! there's not much i can do about people actually listening to me and respecting my wishes etc etc and lord knows they don't, but i would super appreciate it if we kept ahb! an ao3 exclusive for now!

it just makes me feel slightly better to put more rules and boundaries in place! though it's never stopped people in this fandom from bulldozing right through those anyway :/
