Aaron Bushnell, an active US air force member, literally burned himself alive in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington D.C shouting 'free palestine' until he physically couldn't any more.

That is horrifying, but it is admirable, it is profound, and it is powerful.

But it is disgusting and horrifying that a US cop's first response was to point a gun at his burning body and yell at him to get on the ground even as he fell.

It is disgusting and horrifying that I have hardly heard this reported on with the respect and basic honesty it deserves from major media outlets, and that I had to find this out from YouTube community posts of all things.

It is disgusting and horrifying that people have equated respect, awe, and support for his act of protest and the courage it took to carry it out to supporting and encouraging suicide.

It is disgusting and horrifying that a Congolese man doing the same to protest the genocide occurring in the D.R Congo has been overlooked and has received little to no attention in comparison, and that I know and have heard so little of this myself.

It is disgusting and horrifying that the powers Aaron Bushnell protested against, unsettled by his powerful attack on imperialism and genocide and injustice, have tried to diminish his cause, the amazing, terrible sacrifice he made and his memory by reducing his reasons and actions to 'mental illness'. Despite the fact that he was clearly extremely insightful and well-spoken evidenced by the posts he made, despite how he was clearly calm and clearly afraid, despite how he arranged for all the money he had to be donated to Palestinian relief causes in his will and arranged for his neighbour to take care of his cat.

Aaron Bushnell, we will not forget. And we cannot let his life, death, and incredible act of resistance be in vain.

Rest in power.
