Hey, do you know any good word problems associated with abstract algebra (in particular groups/rings/fields)? I'm at a point where it's getting hard to explain to non-mathematicians what exactly my current math class is about because I can't connect it back to application.

I'm going to use this as an excuse to talk about a symmetry group that I came across recently. You may think that this is a good way to illustrate group theory, and many would agree with you. I would say "maybe". In his book Love and Math, Edward Frenkel uses the example of symmetry groups of rotations of a square table vs a circular table, and that was accessible when I read it in high school, but I missed his point until after I took group theory, so I'm just going to highlight it here: an important idea behind symmetry groups is that identifying the symmetry group of the object tells us something about the structure of the object. In the book he explicitly mentions the idea that while we think/are taught that the defining property of a circle is having a center point such that all boundary points are equidistant from the center, you could also classify a circle as a thing whose symmetry group is the circle group R/Z (or R/2piZ if they're comfortable with radians). I hear chemists sometimes use symmetry groups of molecules. I am now going to talk about group theory assuming the reader knows group theory, so that's a prerequisite. I've recently come across an example of a symmetry group in a much softer science. An acquaintance with whom I'm friendly is really into Myers-Briggs and the associated Cognitive Function Theory. The big idea of CFT is that you have one of each S, N, F, and T functions, and whether each is introverted or extroverted and the order of preference you subconsciously have for them determines your Myers-Briggs type (theoretically in a more robust way than the I/E, S/N, T/F, P/J basis). Now for some more nitty-gritty details that made this jump out as a group theory problem when it was explained to me. Upon adding the following restrictions to the ordering of your cognitive functions, there should be a bijection between the set of cognitive function types and Myers-Briggs types: 1. You have two introverted types and two extroverted types and they alternate, so you either have an ieie or an eiei type. 2. Your first and fourth most dominant functions are either both perceiving processes or both judging processes. Your second and third most dominant functions are either both perceiving or judging processes, whichever ones are left. As a corollary of the above, you can't have e.g. two introverted judging processes. Now this wouldn't be a good math post without examples, so for illustration, I'm an INTP. Equivalently, my functional stack is Ti Ne Si Fe. The aforementioned acquaintance thought this was interesting because their partner has the same stack in a different order; I thought it probably wasn't that interesting bc it seemed like the restrictive structure would make a nontrivial fraction of the types also shared my stack. I had an indexed collection and an invariant to describe, so naturally I did some group theory. So the following elementary operations form a [generating set of a] group that I'll describe by describing their group action on functional stacks: η changes ieie to eiei. So η(Ti Ne Si Fe) = Te Ni Se Fi

τout swaps the outermost processes (but not the introversion/extroversion flag, because that could allow invalid stacks). So τout(Ti Ne Si Fe) = Fi Ne Si Te

τin swaps the innermost processes (but not the introversion extroversion flag). So τout(Ti Ne Si Fe) = Ti Se Ni Fe

σ is the most complicated. It moves the outside ones inward, the inner ones outward, but it also swaps the order of the inner pair and the order of the outer pair. This little twist in the order means that each process keeps its original i/e flag. So σ applied to Ti Ne Si Fe puts T/F on the inside and N/S on the outside. It doesn't affect the i/e flags or their order, so the outside has to be Si __ __ Ne and the inside has to be __ Fe Ti __. So σ(Ti Ne Si Fe) = Si Fe Ti Ne. By construction, σ gives the same types in a different order. Less obviously, η◦τin◦τout does also. And actually, these two generate an elementary abelian subgroup of all functional stack permutations that give the same stack in a different order. (So 4 out of 16 types share the same stack. I guess that is kind of nontrivial?) And the whole group is sort of interesting. η commutes with everything, so the group is 〈η〉×〈τin, τout, σ〉, but what I didn't realize is that 〈τin, τout, σ〉is isomorphic to D_8. I didn't realize D_8 was generated by three self-inverse elements!
