First day of the second half of this semester. I am not ready for it to start again. Depression has been kicking my butt, and I am honestly scared about what more responsibilities will do to me at this moment. I originally planned to start studying during my break, which I did not because I needed all the rest I could get, but I don't feel really rested at all. I should probably try to get back into a new study routine slowly, but I don't really have a plan yet. What I know now is that I have lectures to go to in person, which is going to take a lot of energies out of me, and I also have a book to read and study for the same class. I haven't got my materials for the other class I plan to work on in the next couple of months so I need to get them. I should also email professors who have not gotten back to me in these weeks, but for that I might wait a few days or even next week. I really need to force myself to do one thing at the time, and not load myself with too many unfinished tasks, or else that will surely get me overwhelmed.
things on my to-do list:
general to do list for the week
pack my school backpack
check and fix the notes I took during the last lecture of the first half of the semester since I have not done that yet
download the online materials regarding that lecture
look for the materials for the other exam
water the plants in my study
duolingo
text my therapist since due to holidays and stuff we couldn't schedule a forthnightly appointment as usual
commute + go to lecture
#i never really do these posts with daily to dos but i know that when i'll get home after my commute i won't have enough energies#and i like to write daily entries when i am working for uni stuff belive it or not it helps with my mental health#i am once again wishing i could have more lighthearted updates#but once again that is not the reality of the situation and i refuse to pretend that things are always light and jolly#something things are hard and that's just how it is i just hope to find a solution to get back to actually being myself#studying#studyblr#studyinspo#uniblr#university#uni blogging#productivity#journal#journaling#knife gang#mine#the---hermit

I love how in the elves x human relationships, the more the human falls for the elf the more they make a bit of the elves primal magic culture a part of themselves. Callum learning magic, learning everything about Rayla's culture. Loving the moon and wearing more blues than red. Claudia becoming more earth and nature like and adding it to her wardrobe. Amaya and wearing more gold and red, sunfire elf flowers, trying to learn and respect her culture. Wearing the armor when she's fighting to get Janai back.
Right!? There's something that feels sweet and cute when seeing how the humans accept elvish culture into their lives even in small/unintentional ways.
Callum gives the vibes that just like his aunt, will be staying close to his Elvish partner and stay closer to the Silvergrove with Rayla's culture and family.
Claudia is a weird case because she largely blames elves and obviously has her issues with them and yet unintentionally in ways she's gotten herself into Earthblood Culture and even liking it.

Voting can be more difficult when you live in a rural area, the elections office for my county is only open the hours I work (and 1.5 hours away). It’s also a 25-30 minute drive to the closest place that collects mail, but I love the drive along the river! (Also stopped at a fishing access on the way home and found lots of beaver sign)
#I drove all the way in to get my mail yesterday and realized I forgot my ballot at home…#so I made the trip again today#I try to avoid driving on the weekends because my daily commute is 100+ miles a day#but voting is important and worth the hassle

request for playlists!
as i am about to finish s3 and begin s4, i feel that i am at a place in which i can enhance my morning commute by putting on txf playlists. so if anyone has spotify playlist recs... pls feel free to drop a link <3
i mean obviously i still have a WHILE to go, but!!! i am well-established at this point. i love individual character playlists AND ship playlists! i love playlists that are “fox mulder would certainly listen to these songs” and playlists that are “these songs are literally about MSR and Phoebe Bridgers CLEARLY was watching season 3 when she penned this"
#as always i am very grateful for any and all suggestions#everyone in this fandom is so kind it truly has been such a lovely experience#and i can project the blorbos onto many songs so i cannot wait to see what people before me have come up with#i am making one of my own but so far it is literally 2 songs lmao#i love playlists that use canon period specific music and i love playlists that use any and all songs#playlists are a really underrated fan creation in my opinion! you can have so much creativity in them!#there is something so sacred about putting on some good music when you go for the daily commute#it is one of the only things i can steal away for myself from a very busy life#that and this blog lmao#anyway!! i shall use tags because i want reach#the x files#txf#fox mulder#dana scully#msr

well i wrote a whole-ass essay in response to a post abt whether or not murderbot was whitewashed, and turns out op turned off reblogs (i understand. talking to a fandom abt race is. hm. bad.)
anyway someone asked for me to make my part its own rebloggable post so here it is under the cut. fuckin behave or i'll make it unrebloggable also.
tl;dr, 'whitewashed' is not quite the correct term due to mb having no canonical race within the text of the books (altho official but not-exactly-canonical art has it being brown), but fans of color especially have a number of valid reasons to a. read mb as a poc and b. be upset about the casting of a white man to play it due to Unfortunate Implications Of Casting And Show Choices (some nuance included abt whether or not book-portrayal of poc is necessarily good but anywayyyy)
(and no, it is not a case of fandom being racist by portraying a violent/angry/enslaved character as a poc, as posited in another reblog of that post. every day i am begging ppl to comprehend nuance and also that a character having traits associated with a bad stereotype does not make that character a problematic stereotype, inherently. u need other things, like being one-dimensional or being the only character in a marginalized group or or or........ anyway. different essay. here's the main one.)
murderbot in the show is not actually whitewashed, in that it is not physically described in the books and thus could indeed be white.
however, many fans, and especially fans of color read mb as a poc due to a number of factors—the slavery issue is one, the randomization of its genetics making it statistically likely is another, and the textual fact that it's sci fi mixed-race (being part bot part human and switching between the two perceptions and cultures) is another. (there's room to discuss things like whether or not it's a good portrayal, whether it should translate to its physical appearance, the canonical fact that bots, constructs, and humans are all enslaved, what it means for the metaphor that bots and constructs are canonically dangerous, and also how we feel about this being written by a white woman who seems to be trying to portray a post-racism (or at least human racism) society, but that's a different essay.)
(there is also somewhat-official art published in the murderbot omnibus that, while debatably canonical and in grayscale, does show mb with darker hair & skin)
it's also a thing to consider all that the casting implies—is it erasure of the history of slavery, as mentioned before? what does it imply that the enslaved character is white and working (however well-meaning and unwilling they may be) for poc? what about when those poc come across is condescending or naive about freedom and emotions toward mb? what does it mean to cast a white man in the big action hero role, when white men are almost always the big action heroes? what about if the white character sometimes comes come across as more rational or competent than the 'naive hippies' played by poc? what does it imply that randomized dna comes out white? how many constructs will we meet in the show and how many of them will be white? etc.
now, these implications are up for interpretation depending on your reading of both the books and the show, and different people will have different thoughts on whether the portrayals are racially charged.
personally, i don't think any of these choices were deliberately or maliciously racist—frankly the implications only really happen if you think too hard about race in media (.....hi), and i don't think the show creators did that. it's not even particularly egregious, really very standard tv choices, even a little teeny bit progressive in the rest of the casting. it's fine or whatever.
i do think mb shouldn't have been white, and i think this choice accidentally creates some kinda shitty subtext while closing doors to a deeper and more nuanced reading of the text—but then, i find that the show itself misinterprets or misses out on themes, tone, and background that really mattered to me in the book, so I'm not expecting racially nuanced stuff there anyway, and tbh i doubt they even picked up on mixed race mb metaphor, among other things. i am the children throwing rocks going 'this is only partly for your murderbot casting choice, there are many reasons for this.'
..... but from this long and rambling explanation, you can sorta see where people are coming from about the casting, I hope? it's not whitewashing, but it is a Choice, and one fans of color especially are i think allowed to be upset about.
#back on my talking abt race depictions in media as ever#posts written on my phone during such things as daily commute and bathroom break and laundry lmao#now with link to semi-canonical official art! for kicks.#and some mild show spoilers and the big spoiler that i have not enjoyed the show much and think some of the choices (besides casting)#make it a weaker story and it has failed to deliver on themes i personally consider important and valuable#............and also it's accidentally slipped into kinda iffy territory re: portrayals of the actual characters of color. like. hmmmm.#anyway that's my media criticism for today. no more discussing race with fandom 4 me 2day.#if u try i'll just tell u jason todd is an honorary filipino. reason: i like him.#that's it that's all i'm doing i am bone tired from a longass day

I have not kept it a secret that this semester commuting has been really rough on me. By the time I get home in the middle of the afternoon even if I only had to sit in a hour and a half lecture I feel like an overcooked noodle. And the mornings aren't any easier, my anxiety has been spiking a lot lately, and that messes me up completly, and it's particularly hard on my stomach. Let's just say it's a very demanding period of my life both physically and emotionally and I have been doing my best to get through it with ups and downs, but most importantly by trying to properly take care of myself. I decided to compile a list of small things that have been helping me, both for future reference as well as for people who might be dealing with similar issues.
Prep everything I can the night before. I don't leave the house until more or less mid morning since my class is on lunch time more or less (and this will come up again), so I do have time to do stuff in the morning, but if I have already put everything I need in my backpack, picked an outfit for the day and checked that I have my bus ticket the night before I can have a much calmer morning. Having a calm morning is fundamental for me on any day, so especially when I have a stressful and energy demanding day ahead I want to make sure I don't have to rush, and here is my second point.
Try to have a morning as calm as possible before I have to leave. I am a morning person so I wake up quite early which means I have plenty of time to take it easy. And this means drink my tea as I read my book, prep the last few things I need, like my waterbottle, eat (on which I'll have a later point). Overall my morning before leaving needs to be slow and mostly made of things for myself so again my precious reading time, listening tocmusic as I get ready to get in a better mood and so on.
Taking my meds regularly. It's the logical thing to do, if I am in a period in which my anxiety is worse than usual the number one goal is to be consistent with meds, they are there to help me even if sometimes I forget that.
Finding ways to enjoy food when anxiety fucks up my stomach. What happens is that as soon as I have an anxiety spike for some reason I get very nauseous, which is terribly by itself and it gets worse when it makes me struggle to enjoy my food. But I found a couple of ways to work around that in the past few weeks. Eating when I am away from home is much worse so what I do is embrace the little hobbit in me and have more meals when I am at home, and just bring some snacks on the road if I need them. That means I have two breakfasts before I have to leave the house, the last being a bit more filling. And then when I get home no matter how tired I am or what time it is I cook something for myself, something simple, but I take the time to make something good that fills me up and makes me happy. Because having a full stomach does improve your mood belove me. When I am on the road I bring some lighter snacks that can help me if I feel like I need to have something but that will also work well if I have a spike in anxiety and correlated nausea. I usually eat some homemade bread while I walk from the bus stop to my uni, and then snack on some nuts while I wait for the lecture. And I always have an emergency sweet treat in my backpack because that is something that I actually do on a regular basis. This thing has been working very well, I have had less problems with my stomach acting up, and I am definitely getting all the nutrients I need during the day, just at times that are a bit different from my normal routine.
Bring tea with me. It's something I never did before but it's becoming the one thing I won't give up. I either make a green tea or an herbal tea that I drink before the lecture, and it's been so good for me both physically and mentally. It's been super cold so the warm treat is really needed, but most importantly it's been very comforting and calming, so shutout to my dad for suggesting that.
Having little things to look out for during the commute. This mostly consists of me listing to podcasts, and re:dracula has been of great company in my commutes last year so it's nice it's become a bit of a tradition. It's just good for me not to associate commuting with negative things, so now I just percieve it as poscast time which makes it much much better. This also includes texing friends when I feel like I can look at the screen of my phone without getting car sick (again when anxiety messes me up I can get random car sickness), that's good to keep my mind off things and make the commute feel lighter.
Total relax when I get home. Which sometimes means lying in bed with a cup of tea and nothing more. If I have enough brain power I might read a comic, or play stupid midless games on my tablet for a bit. Honestly just things that need as little energy and brainpower as possible because by that time I do not have much energy or brainpower left, and it's okay. I normally use up a lot of energy when going out and it this period of time all tasks require I use even more energy. I can't do much about it other than accept it and do my best to tke care of myself.
#i feel like i am forgetting about somethong but these are def the main things#the goal of this weird journaling/list/idk post is to mostly write down what has been helpful for future reference#bc i know myself and i know i always struggle with commuting routines#i also haven't had enough energy to do my usual daily journals so it's a good filler#i will surely get back to my normal style posts at the end of the week#idek how to tag this kglgllf#studyblr#studyinspo#uniblr#university#student life#journal#journaling#commuting#commuting day tips#mine#the---hermit
