Have you played Darksword Adventures ( aka Phantasia) ?

This is a standalone TTRPG based on the setting of Weis and Hickman's Darksword series. The Darksword Adventures book is mainly composed of a large volume of setting information, apparently intended to facilitate users of other game systems transitioning to a new setting, but it also includes about 100 pages of rules for its own dedicated system (which it calls "Phantasia", but I think "Darksword Adventures", the title of the book, is more likely to be recognized), with idiosyncratic probability mechanics based on hand signals (but substitutable by 10-sided dice) and suggestions for converting characters from other game systems (implicitly primarily Dungeons & Dragons). Perhaps the highlight of the book is the preface, a short story which involving characters within the setting playing Phantasia as part of the education of a young aristocrat.

I read the first one, liked it well enough, got halfway through the second book before dropping it because proud self-made empress falling for the hot barbarian slave Gary Stu named Kevin was not my cup of tea :P

Writing Notes: Technophobia

Technophobia - fear of technology

Many individuals fear technological devices in modern society.

For example, some individuals look with fear upon computers, highly technical telephone answering systems, and even videocassette recorders.

Some individuals become very anxious when faced with a set of instructions that are supposed to be easy for the average individual to follow.

Another aspect of technophobia is the fear that machines will be able to do what people do now.

Fear of robots is part of this fear.

Mechanophobia - fear of machinery; somewhat related to fears of technical things, such as computers.

Prosophobia - fear of progress; may be related to fears of novelty, newness, and innovation, and to technophobia and computer phobia.

Cyberphobia - fear of computers, computerization, or things related to computers; involves fear, distrust, or hatred of computers.

However, some experts, such as Mark Kenwright and Isaac Marks, M.D., have used computers to help individuals become desensitized from the things they fear, as discussed in the British Journal of Psychiatry in 2004.

In this study, experts used computer-aided help over the Internet with 10 patients with phobia and panic. (The study is small and larger studies should be performed in the future.)

The patients improved significantly at a one-month follow-up, and their gains were clinically significant. Kenwright and his colleagues said the Internet users were generally satisfied, although 3 of them said they would have preferred face-to-face help.

Said Kenwright et al., “Computer-aided self-exposure guidance using the internet [sic] at home, with brief advice from a clinician on a live helpline, may help some people with phobia or panic disorders to overcome barriers to treatment such as the scarcity of qualified therapists and having to travel to see the therapist in person.”

Obviously those who are computer-phobic could not use the Internet to deal with their phobias. Some individuals who are faced with the need to learn to use computers or to learn new programs on their computers will show symptoms of classic phobia, such as:

nausea,

dizziness,

cold sweat, and

high blood pressure.

Many computer phobics hide their fears because of heavy work and peer pressure to make efficient use of computers.

Individuals who fear computers can overcome their phobia by gradually exposing themselves to electronic calculators, games, and eventually to simple computer programs.

Coaching and feedback (from an expert) are good ways to improve the learning curve for mastering electronic devices.

Technophobia Trope

Characters or groups who are afraid of technology and the evils that can arise from their use.

Covers technology in general as the primary motivator.

Sometimes this arises from an event that happened in a person or nation's past, but often is just a result of fear of the unknown.

Sometimes, these individuals or groups are concerned for the future if these advances go unchecked.

This trope can also be brought on as a result of religious teachings or as a result of a dichotomy such as Magic vs Technology (e.g., The Darksword Trilogy) or Nature vs Technology (e.g., FernGully: The Last Rainforest or Avatar).

Evil Luddite is an extreme example of this trope. This is a lot milder and often applies to some of the protagonists to create tension. Can be related to New Technology Is Evil and Science Is Bad tropes.

Aversion of a specific type of technology (such as Doesn't Like Guns) might be Sub-Tropes. Technologically Blind Elders is a subtrope.

Examples:

The Twilight Zone (1959): In "A Thing About Machines", Bartlett Finchley despises all machines, even more than he hates people, and destroys his appliances if he can't get them to work. For instance, he kicked in the screen of his television and threw his radio down the stairs.

The Twilight Zone (1985): In "Quarantine", the survivors of World War III in 2043 came to distrust and despise technology because nuclear weapons had wiped out 80% of the world's population. They abandoned machines in favor of improving humanity through genetic engineering and achieving harmony with the natural world.

In the Anita Blake series, it's mentioned by Anita that really old vampires can be technophobes. They just aren't used to it and don't trust or understand new technology.

Cartoon Heroes Paper Cut-Outs

John Blackstar

Created by Lou Scheimer, Norm Prescott and Tom Ruegger, Blackstar is a science fiction/fantasy cartoon produced by Filmation.  The tale involves an astronaut from earth named John Blackstar who becomes marooned on the alien world of Sagar after his spacecraft was swept into a black hole. On this ancient planet, Blackstar allies himself with the Trobbits, a dragon-horse named Warlock, and Mara the Enchantress. Blackstar and his allies oppose the villainous Overlord, who seeks to conquer all of Sagar.  

Both Blackstar and the Overlord possess halves of the Powerstar.  This is a magical weapon that was split in two through unknown events.  Blackstar's half of the Powerstar is the Starsword, an incredible weapon that is able to absorb, store, and reflect any external form of energy.  The Starsword can also produce blasts of pure energy; it generates an invisible ‘aura’ that imbues Blackstar with superhuman senses, strength, endurance, reflexes, speed, agility, and almost unlimited invulnerability.  

The Overlord’s Darksword has the same powers and the villain will do anything to obtain the Starsword and fuse it with his own blade so to recreate the Powerstar and possess unlimited power.  Thankfully Blackstar has been able to stay a step ahead of the villain and repel the attacks by the Overlord and his evil minions.    

Actor George DiCenzo provided the voice for John Blackstar.  The series premiered in September of 1981 and ran for a single season.  Many of the themes, plot-points, voice actors and design aesthetics would be reused in Filmation’s subsequent project, He-Man and The Masters of The Universe.

Hello! I was watching this Adam Savage video on youtube and it's about antique swords at the MET, so naturally I thought of you. It's a rather recent one titled "Adam Savage Meets Real Ancient Swords!" on Adam Savage's Tested channel. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it, because it was so interesting. Sadly, I can't add a link, but it should be easy to find with the title. Hope you're having a great day!

it's a great video, and I immediately showed it to @dduane because Adam reacted in the same way I would have done - even to the sword he liked best, which of course indicates his excellent taste in weapons...

Conservator Sean Belair mentions (at 6:17) "...another identical one floating around..." This photo shows several; Darksword Armoury, Albion Swords and Ronin Katana repros, and two museum originals.

The one Sean refers to, given his use of "identical", is probably the "Harriet Dean" sword which reappeared a few years ago.

These "Dean" swords were a pair acquired by Dr Bashford Dean, the Met's first curator of arms and armour, one of which he donated to the museum. The second was held by his sister Harriet and, on her death, was auctioned off and vanished (probably into a private collection) for three-quarters of a century before turning up at Christies in 2015.

Its value was estimated at £70-100,000 and it went for £386,500 (!) - but where it went, to a museum collection or back into private hands, I have no idea...

Wortox skilltree beta is here, and with the first patch, it's looking grim in my opinion :/

They expect you to dedicate 7 inventory slots to expensive gear to get damage equal to a darksword, no consistant area of effect damage like other characters got, affinities aligned with charlie and wagstaff that are exclusive to post rift gear, and worst of all they made the whole tree into a moral choice. So now I have to make him mean if I want more damage :(

Honestly kinda devastated because I doubt they'll make any big change, just small number tweaks, and it's just really underwhelming. I know you're more of an atmospheric player than a fighter, so you'll have no reason to choose the naughty side. I hope this isn't too intrusive, but there's no one else I can think of to confide in this very niche obsession of mine.

I've had a bit of a play around with the new skills tonight, and i gotta preface my thoughts with this; You are correct i am a very atmospheric player, i can't fight and i dont go in the caves, i generally just play to build a fun base and mess around so a lot of the intricacies of the gameplay aspects of his skilltree will be completely lost on me

I like alot of the imagery it puts in my head, the souls sparking at his feet when he gets the speedboost, the little taunt the decoy does, I like the idea of Wortox crafting an item to teleport his friends around, it's just fun :)

I don't tend to mind the moral split, its phrased in a silly enough way to not make it seem overly evil (though some of the new naughty soul quotes eer a bit on the overly malicious side for his character for me) and also the fact that your not locked out of either side if you pick skills from one side, but i can def see why it'd put someone off!

I think overall i'm pretty neutral, i like the character of his skilltree, but I'm a tad miffed that it is so focused on souls, but for it just focusing on souls, it's not quite as bad as it could have been, however annoyed i am that they did end up giving him alignments but such is life
