Calix yawns.

It’s quiet in the lab...eerily so. After months of so-called "hibernation" (more like chemically-induced burnout naps and caffeine crashes), he finally stirs beneath a blanket of blueprints and pizza boxes.

He stretches, pushing back what he thought was a very hard weighted blanket. he cracked his back like a glow stick left in a freezer. He stands up...

or so he thinks.

Because something moves behind him. Something long. Something thin.

A tail.

He blinks.

Scratches his chest absentmindedly...and feels fur.

Short, wiry, wrong.

His reflection isn't in the mirror yet, but the rest of the lab stares back at him just fine.

Rust coats his metals.

The air smells like expired soy sauce and something that used to be soup.

His bombs are coated in dust. His notes are smeared.

Something's off.

'Time flies by when you're having a break' He thought

Groggy but determined, Calix stumbles toward the bathroom. Maybe a shower. Maybe a brush. Something to pull himself back together.

He grabs the toothbrush, looks up at the mirror

...

And sees it.

...

A warped reflection. A stranger. A creature.

A rat.

Matted fur, yellowed incisors, twitching whiskers. That nose. That nose.

Eyes still familiar. Everything else—not.

...

What happened?

When?

How?

...

He touches the glass. It doesn't lie.

"...Okay. That's new."

He reached into his lab coat and took out a cigarette pack and a lighter. Setting the pack off to the side and looking at the lighter at the palm of his hand
