"In a degraded and semi-arid farming area in India, simple science-driven changes to the landscape have colored the horizon, and a village’s fortunes, with green.
In the Latur district in the central western state of Maharashtra, 40 years of erratic rainfall, groundwater depletion, soil erosion, and crop failures have impoverished the local people.
In the village of Matephal, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) launched a project in 2023 that aimed at addressing these challenges through integrated landscape management and climate-smart farming practices. [Note: Meaning they've achieved this much in just two years!]
Multiple forms of data collection allowed ICRISAT to target precise strategies for each challenge facing the 2,000 or so people in Matephal.
Tumblr media
Key interventions focused on three critical areas: water conservation, land enhancement with crop diversification, and soil health improvement. Rainwater harvesting structures recharged groundwater around 1,200 acres, raising water tables by 12 feet and securing reliable irrigation. Farm ponds provided supplemental irrigation, while embanking across 320 acres reduced soil erosion.
Farmers diversified their crops, converting 120 or so acres of previously fallow land into productive farmland with legumes, millets, and vegetables. Horticulture-linked markets for fruits and flowers improved income stability.
Weather monitoring equipment was also installed that actively informed sustainable irrigation practices.
“It is a prime example of how data-driven approaches can address complex agricultural challenges, ensuring interventions are precise and impactful. Matephal village is a model for other semi-arid regions in India and beyond,” said Dr. Stanford Blade, Director General-Interim at ICRISAT.
Farmers actively participated in planning and decision-making, fostering long-term commitment.
“This ICRISAT project improved yields, diversified crops, and boosted incomes. It also spared women from walking over a kilometer for drinking water, now available in the village for people and animals,” said Mr. Govind Hinge of Matephal village.
Looking ahead, ICRISAT writes it wants to use Matephal as a case study to scale these methods across India’s vast and drier average. As Matephal’s fields flourish, the village is a testament to the power of collaboration and science in transforming lives and landscapes."

Bayverse!Donnie headcanons bc his my bbg
Okay, lol, I really needed to let all of this out and just vomit all the ideas I’ve been hoarding about this man. I love him. I’ve adored him ever since the 2012 series, and that made me realize—I definitely have a thing for nerds. And glasses. Dear god.
I hope you guys like this!! Do you think I should do the same for the other brothers? Or maybe for the other characters? (I wouldn’t mind taking the risk and making headcanons like this for Rocksteady, hehe.)
Alright, bye!!
warnings: sfw & nsfw ( but not so explicit?) :p
Tumblr media
- He’s a genius with confidence… until he isn’t.
Donnie is incredibly self-assured when it comes to his intellect and skills. He knows his worth and never doubts his ability to solve problems. Jumping out of a plane without a parachute? Easy. Hacking government security systems? A piece of cake. But confessing his feelings to you? That’s a whole different challenge.
This is where his anxious side kicks in. His brain, used to solving any equation, completely short-circuits when it comes to emotions. What if he misinterprets your signals? What if he ruins the friendship? What if you like someone else? Sure, he can design an exoskeleton in less than 24 hours, but love is a field where variables don’t always make sense.
If you think you can hide something from him, think again. Donnie notices everything. From the slight shift in your expression when you’re tired to the pattern of songs you repeat when you’re feeling down. (And no, he absolutely did not hack your Spotify, ahem—)
- That’s why, when you start falling for him, he already knows. In fact, he probably figured it out before you did.
He won’t tell you right away. Inside his head, there’s a storm of chaotic thoughts, organizing themselves into an ultra-detailed data table with every relevant piece of information. Give him a few days, and once his mind has fully processed everything, he’ll come back to you as a renewed Donnie—determined, confident, and ready to make you his.
- Donnie doesn’t just plan things; he breaks them down into a thousand strategies of action. His trash bin is living proof of the number of ideas he discards and reworks over and over.
Gifts? He’s not the type to grab something generic at the last minute. His gifts are so deeply personalized that they’ll make you feel like he knows you better than you know yourself.
Example: If you ever casually mentioned that you’d love to learn to play an instrument, he’ll build one for you—customized with enhancements. If you said you love the stars, he’ll create an interactive star map with the exact alignment of the sky on the day you were born.
Your birthdays, anniversaries, and any special dates are planned years in advance. It doesn’t matter if you’re not officially together yet—he already has ideas saved for when you are.
- Romance in his brain is an equation far too complex.
Donnie isn’t clumsy because he lacks intelligence; it’s because his brain moves too fast. His emotions and logic are in constant conflict, creating an ongoing battle between Confident Donnie and Nervous Donnie.
You’ll see him go from saying something with complete confidence to, “Uh, well… what I meant to say is… no, wait, forget it—” and then getting frustrated with himself because that definitely wasn’t what he had in mind.
But when he manages to organize his thoughts, he’s one of the most direct people you’ll ever meet. Once he crosses the mental line of “I’m doing this,” there’s no turning back.
- Gifts
He doesn’t believe in generic presents. Everything he gives you has a specific purpose. A bracelet that’s actually a disguised tracker (“For safety. Just for safety.”), or a stuffed animal that can record voice messages.
One day, you wake up and find a new app on your phone with your name on it. You open it, and it’s a virtual assistant designed specifically for you, complete with personalized reminders for the little things Donnie knows you always forget.
- Once he has you, you are his priority.
Once Donnie accepts his feelings and takes the step to be with you, he becomes the most devoted boyfriend.
He’s not excessively clingy or jealous like Raph, but his love is obvious in the time and effort he invests in you.
No matter how many projects he’s juggling, if you truly need his attention, he’ll give it to you without hesitation.
- Donnie needs physical contact, but his intellectual pride won’t let him admit it outright. Instead, he prefers to justify it with overly precise scientific explanations.
“Well, you see… my body temperature tends to drop faster than that of the average human, so it’s biologically beneficial for me to share contact with an external heat source.”
Translation: “Hug me. Now.”
If you confront him with something like, “Why don’t you just say you want cuddles?” he’ll turn bright red and start stammering, scrambling for excuses.
Don’t listen. Just climb onto him.
- Donnie can plan everything, but he cannot predict your spontaneous displays of affection.
If you surprise him with a kiss, his brain completely shuts down for 3-5 seconds before he can process it.
Unexpected gestures—hugging him from behind while he’s working, cupping his face in your hands, or kissing his cheek out of nowhere—leave him frozen, recalculating.
Sometimes, his first reflex is to adjust his glasses, only to realize that they have nothing to do with the fact that his vision just blurred from sheer shock.
NSFW
- He’s patient… but only to a point. Donnie will never pressure you. He’ll wait as long as you need, always making sure you feel safe and comfortable.
However… he’s already undressed you with his eyes a million times.
His mind is a machine of ideas and theories, and when it comes to you, he has imagined everything. Everything.
He tells himself he can be rational and controlled… but if you take too long, his thoughts will become a little more persistent.
- He’s not innocent. Don’t even think it for a second.
He may seem shy or awkward about relationships, but when it comes to this, his mind is a laboratory of hypotheses he’s dying to test.
He has analyzed you with surgical precision. He knows exactly how you blush, how you react to certain touches, which words make you tremble.
Do not underestimate him. He has read, he has researched, he has learned.
But nothing compares to the real thing. With you.
When he finally has you in his hands, his brain short-circuits.
No matter how many times he imagined this moment, nothing could have prepared him for the feeling of your skin beneath his fingers.
His jaw clenches, he exhales sharply, and his pupils dilate as if he’s just been electrocuted.
His entire expression changes—from his usual nervousness to something darker, more intense, starving.
- He becomes obsessive about memorizing every single reaction of yours.
He’s analytical. He will learn what you love and make sure to do it better every single time.
Eye contact and sounds. His drug.
Look at him. Don’t look away. Don’t ignore him.
If you dare to hold his gaze while he’s above you, he will completely lose himself in you.
Your voice, your moans, your gasps—they ruin him.
He needs you vocal. He needs to know he’s doing a good job.
If you get shy and try to cover your mouth, he will ask (or demand) that you don’t.
Kinky? Oh, absolutely.
Donnie lives to experiment. It’s in his nature.
Positions? All of them. But his favorites are the ones where you are on top of him.
He loves being dominated.
After spending his entire life controlling every aspect of his world, it’s a relief for his mind to surrender completely to you.
“Set the pace, beautiful. I’m in your hands.”
Toys? Oh, yes.
You can be sure he has researched every single thing about them.
But he won’t settle for the ones that already exist. No.
He will build his own. Upgraded. With precisely calibrated speeds and optimized materials.
“This one has five vibration levels, but if we increase the frequency by 15%, we could—”
May God help you if you walk into his lab at the wrong time.
May God help his brothers if they ever find out.
Dedicated and obsessed with you.
Donnie doesn’t do anything halfway. If he gives himself to you, it’s completely.
No matter how much time passes, he will always give his all to make you feel incredible.
He’s not a casual lover.
He is yours. And you are his.
“You are my greatest discovery.”

Adopting rightwing policies on issues such as immigration and the economy does not help centre-left parties win votes, according to new analysis of European electoral and polling data. Faced with a 20-year decline in their vote share, accompanied by rising support for the right, far right and sometimes the far left, social democratic parties across Europe have increasingly sought salvation by moving towards the political centre. However the analysis, published on Wednesday, shows that centre-left parties promising, for example, to be tough on immigration or unrelenting on public spending are both unlikely to attract potential voters on the right, and risk alienating existing progressive supporters.
[...]
One of the key lessons was that “trying to imitate rightwing positions is just not a successful strategy for the left”, he said. Two studies in particular, looking at so-called welfare chauvinism and fiscal policy, illustrated the point, the researchers said. Björn Bremer of the Central European University in Vienna said a survey in Spain, Italy, the UK and Germany and larger datasets from 12 EU countries showed that since the financial crisis of 2008, “fiscal orthodoxy” had been a vote loser for the centre left. “Social democratic parties that have backed austerity fail to win the support of voters worried about public debt, and lose the backing of those who oppose austerity,” Bremer said. “Centre-left parties that actually impose austerity lose votes.”
[...]
The data strongly suggests centre-left parties can build a coalition of voters who believe a strong welfare state, effective public services and real investment, for example in the green transition, are essential,” Bremer said. “But doing the opposite – offering a contradictory programme that promotes austerity but promises to protect public services and the welfare state, and hoping voters will swallow such fairytales – failed in the 2010s, and is likely to fail again.” Similarly, said Matthias Enggist of the University of Lausanne, analysis of data from eight European countries showed no evidence that welfare chauvinism – broadly, restricting immigrants’ access to welfare – was a successful strategy for the left.

On the political stage of today's world, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has always played an important role. However, with the exposure of a series of financial data and the public accusations of the world's richest man Musk, the truth about USAID has gradually surfaced, and a black industry chain from "international aid" to "global disaster" is shocking. Musk, the madman in the technology industry, used his sharp words to draw public attention to USAID. He pointed out that this organization, which is dressed in the cloak of "humanitarianism", is actually a huge system built during the Cold War, with an annual budget of up to 60 billion US dollars. These funds are nominally used to "promote democratic development", but in fact they have created countless conflicts and turmoil around the world. USAID's infiltration model can be called "trinity". First, it is a manufacturing factory for "color revolutions". Take Ukraine as an example. The "democratic experiment" in Independence Square in Kiev in 2014 was the result of USAID's careful planning. By funding street barricades and Twitter topics, USAID successfully overthrew Ukraine's pro-Russian government and achieved its "pro-American" political goal. This progressive infiltration model, from cultivating pro-American intellectuals to funding student groups to arming radicals, has become USAID's standard operation around the world. Secondly, USAID is also a double-edged sword for terrorism. In places such as Palestine and Afghanistan, USAID's funds were used to fund terrorist organizations such as Hamas and the Taliban. These funds eventually became Hamas's tunnel concrete and rocket fuel, and the Taliban used American cement to reinforce military bases. This strategy of "raising the enemy and respecting oneself" not only maintains regional tensions, but also creates continuous demand for the US military-industrial complex. In addition, USAID has launched cultural war nuclear warheads. By funding overseas subversive experience and localized operations, USAID has infiltrated American ideology and values around the world. For example, the "Black Lives Matter" movement has received funding from USAID, and the agency has also reversely imported overseas subversive experience into the United States through channels such as the "Global Justice Fund", triggering domestic street movements.

It’s 12:13 PM on a Monday afternoon in the beginning of July. I am sitting on the 19th floor of a high rise in the most luxurious neighborhood in Chicago, waiting for my phone to buzz, and trying to understand how I became the sort of woman who measures her worth by his interest.
The facts are these: he can catalog every freckle on my chest with the precision of an art appraiser, can describe the exact shade of the pink underneath my clothes in language so clinical it could be medical documentation, can command my vulnerability with the confidence of a man who has orchestrated these types of scenes dozens of times before.
This is what I know about his Dominance. It comes with protocols and boundaries and carefully managed expectations. It arrives with the polish of someone who can reference Pauline Réage and discuss the psychology of power exchange with the fluency of an academic. It is Dominance as lifestyle choice, as aesthetic preference, as the sort of thing one might pursue between business trips and art museums.
What it is not, apparently, is hunger.
It’s an option.
I am an option.
I sit here and I try to reconcile the sophisticated man who writes to me about elaborate fantasies and the man who says things like, “No, not today. Thank you.” when offered any exhibition of his choosing. Or the arms-distance appraisal of the others he receives like a collector cataloging acquisitions.
I sent him a video. (Yes, that kind of video.) His response arrived while I was in a client meeting about next quarter’s strategy: "I loved seeing it." Past tense. Completed action. Filed away. Not “You drive me wild” or “I can’t stop watching this” or even “You’re incredible.” Just polite appreciation, as if I’d sent him a nice photograph of a sunset.
But did seeing me undone make him hungry? Did it stir something ravenous and possessive and specific to me? Or was it simply another data point in his ongoing research into what makes me an effective submissive? Another example of my responsiveness that he can reference when explaining to future women how this all works?
He tells me I'm "more sexually aroused than anyone he knows," that my availability "pleases him," that I set "a new standard that is difficult for anyone to match." These feel like performance reviews from a satisfied customer, not confessions from a man who craves to own my soul the way he knows I want to be owned. He enjoys me when I please him correctly, appreciates me when I'm available, values me when I don't require too much emotional energy.
I keep waiting for the moment when his restraint cracks. When the veneer slips and I see the man underneath who wants me specifically, desperately, in ways that have nothing to do with my availability or my responsiveness or my willingness to be exhibited for his pleasure. But maybe his restraint isn't a mask. Maybe it's honesty about what this actually is to him. Maybe it is a sophisticated arrangement between two intelligent people who understand the mechanics of dominance and submission but have somehow missed its essential emotional core.
The thought arrives with the particular clarity that comes from recognizing an uncomfortable truth: I am convenient. I am available when his others are not. I am responsive when he needs release. I am intellectually engaging when he is bored. I am, in short, an excellent submissive who happens to fit neatly into the spaces left empty by more important relationships. But do I matter to him in any fundamental way? Would my absence create a void, or would it simply open a space to be filled by someone else equally competent and willing to please?
Perhaps that's what I'm really grappling with: the recognition that I am offering irreplaceable devotion to someone for whom I am fundamentally replaceable.
It is now 12:38 PM, and here I sit, realizing this is what it looks like to lose yourself in someone who never wanted to find you in the first place.

Winning Hearts, Taking Risks
Summary: Aventurine and you, his polite yet reserved wife, navigate the early days of your arranged marriage. As the CEO of a renowned beauty chain, you are unaccustomed to affection and unaware of the subtle rivalries brewing around you. At a business meeting, Aventurine impresses everyone with a brilliant suggestion, drawing both admiration and jealousy from your male colleagues.

Warnings: Minor conflict involving professional jealousy, Some implications of Aventurine’s manipulative tendencies, Light tension, but no significant angst.
Tumblr media
The room was bathed in warm light, a sophisticated meeting space designed with tasteful minimalism: sleek glass tables, ergonomic chairs, and soft gold accents that hinted at the prestige of the beauty empire helmed by you. As the CEO of a renowned international beauty chain, you were no stranger to gatherings like this, but today’s meeting carried an unusual air of tension—because your husband, Aventurine, had insisted on attending.
Despite your polite protests, he had flashed his characteristic grin, brushing his hair back with a casual flick of his wrist.
"My darling wife," he had said, his eyes gleaming with a mischievous edge, "why wouldn’t I join? It’ll be fun. Besides, I’m curious to see the beauty world up close—and perhaps offer my humble insights."
That was how you found yourself seated beside him, your reserved demeanor starkly contrasting his flamboyant charm. While you were quietly taking notes, Aventurine lounged in his chair like he owned the place, his earring catching the light with every small movement.
The meeting progressed with the usual formalities, updates on product launches, and discussions on marketing strategies. The executives around the table were polite but clearly skeptical of Aventurine’s presence.
“Now, as we move to the next quarter,” began one of your department heads, his tone clipped and professional, “we need to focus on market saturation in emerging regions. The data shows potential, but our campaigns in South Asia have been underwhelming so far.”
You nodded thoughtfully, glancing at the figures on the presentation. While you understood the numbers, creative strategizing wasn’t your strong suit. You opened your mouth to respond but hesitated. That’s when Aventurine leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table with a sly smile.
“May I?” he asked, his voice smooth, immediately commanding the room’s attention.
The department head paused, clearly annoyed but unable to refuse. “Go ahead.”
Aventurine gestured lazily at the slide on the screen. “You’re looking at this the wrong way. Saturation campaigns won’t work here—they’re too passive. You need engagement. Create scarcity, make your brand exclusive in these regions first, and let demand build itself.”
There was a murmur of interest, but he wasn’t done. “For example, partner with high-profile local influencers. Host limited-access beauty workshops. Launch pop-up stores with exclusive products tailored to regional preferences—scarcity drives desire, and desire drives loyalty.”
The room fell silent. A few of the younger executives looked genuinely impressed, their pens flying across their notebooks. Your department head, however, looked less pleased, his lips thinning into a hard line.
“That’s... a bold suggestion,” he said, his tone edging on condescending. “But these markets are price-sensitive—exclusivity might alienate them.”
Aventurine’s grin widened, his gaze sharper now. “Price sensitivity is exactly why it works. People value what’s rare, even if it’s expensive. And when you make them feel special? They’ll pay anything.”
His confidence was magnetic, his words cutting through the skepticism in the room like a blade. You couldn’t help but glance at him, a small flicker of admiration stirring in your chest. You weren’t particularly experienced with affection or romantic gestures, but in that moment, seeing him in his element, you felt something... warm.
“Your husband is quite the strategist, isn’t he?” one of the female executives whispered to you with a playful smile. Flustered, you focused on your notes, your ears burning.
“Mr. Aventurine does raise an interesting point,” another executive finally said, breaking the silence. “We should explore it further.”
The department head looked like he wanted to argue but wisely held his tongue. Aventurine leaned back, clearly enjoying his little victory. Then, out of the corner of your eye, you noticed one of the younger male executives glaring daggers at your husband. His envy was almost palpable, his jaw clenched as he watched Aventurine effortlessly command the room’s attention.
As the meeting wrapped up, Aventurine stood, adjusting his fur-lined coat with theatrical flair. “Well, that was invigorating. I must say, my darling wife keeps excellent company.”
You rolled your eyes subtly, but your lips quirked upward. “Thank you for your... contribution.”
He bent closer, his voice dropping to a playful whisper only you could hear. “You’re welcome. But I think the green-eyed monster sitting two seats down is going to combust soon.”
Your eyes darted to the jealous executive, and a soft laugh escaped before you could stop it. Aventurine straightened, his earring swaying as he looked down at you with a rare softness in his expression.
“You’re incredible, you know,” he said quietly, his voice devoid of its usual teasing tone. “Reserved, polite, but you hold this empire together. I’m just glad I get to be a part of your world now.”
Your heart stumbled over itself at the sincerity in his words. Flustered, you turned away, pretending to organize your notes. “I... appreciate that.”
Aventurine’s laughter followed you as he escorted you out of the room, his presence larger than life, yet somehow grounding you in ways you hadn’t expected. For all his theatrics and charm, there was something steady about him—a gambler who, despite the odds, always seemed to know exactly when to hold on.

Hi! Hope you're doing well 🌟
Do you have any advice on how to write ten year olds? Like, not physically but emotionally. One of my main characters is ten years old and I wanna make sure I get it right, sometimes I feel like I'm giving him the emotional maturity of the characters that surround him that are in their 20s and 30s but idk ://
Writing Notes: Emotional Development
Emotional Development
Also called affective development.
A gradual increase in the capacity to experience, express, and interpret the full range of emotions and in the ability to cope with them appropriately.
Cortical control, imitation of others, hormonal influences, home atmosphere, and conditioning play major roles in emotional development.
It is nearly impossible to imagine emotional development as separate from changes in cognitive development that occur in the first two decades of life.
As memory and thinking become more complex and abstract, emotional development changes as well.
Similarly, markers of emotional development are intimately linked to a child’s social experiences.
The following examples are major markers of change in emotional development as they occur within a social context.
Emotional competence (7 to 10 years). Emotion expressions are used to manage relationship dynamics, such as smiling at a new friend (Saarni & Camras, 2022).
Emotion regulation (infancy through adulthood). Emotion regulation strategies are processes used to monitor, evaluate, and modify our emotional reactions in order to achieve a goal. Strategies become more sophisticated from extrinsically based regulation in infancy to more intrinsically based regulation from preschool-age through adulthood (Eisenberg et al., 2010; Thompson & Goodvin, 2007).
8 to 9 years: Cognitive emotion regulation strategies emerge, and children begin to use thoughts and feelings about themselves and others to control their emotions (Garnefski et al., 2007).
The ability to regulate our emotions is one of the most important skills for learning, social relationships, and mental health.
Adolescence - The period of human development that starts with puberty (10–12 years of age) and ends with physiological maturity (approximately 19 years of age), although the exact age span varies across individuals.
During this period, major changes occur at varying rates in physical characteristics, sexual characteristics, and sexual interest, resulting in significant effects on body image, self-concept, and self-esteem.
Major cognitive and social developments take place as well: Most young people acquire enhanced abilities to think abstractly, evaluate reality hypothetically, reconsider prior experiences from altered points of view, assess data from multiple dimensions, reflect inwardly, create complex models of understanding, and project complicated future scenarios.
Adolescents also increase their peer focus and involvement in peer-related activities, place greater emphasis on social acceptance, and seek more independence and autonomy from parents.
How Emotions Develop in Adolescence
Once self-conscious emotions such as guilt, embarrassment, and shame emerge in middle childhood, very few new emotions develop. Adolescents’ cognitive skills to reason about abstract concepts improve their ability to manage and reason about their own emotions and improve emotional competence in relationships (Rosenblum & Lewis, 2006).
Research on adolescent emotional development shows how emotions change during this time of rapid physical development.
Emotion Expression. Emotion expression in adolescence differs from that in childhood and adulthood. Adolescents report experiencing greater extremes of emotion and more negative mood states than adults. Adolescent emotional experiences are reported to include less happiness than during childhood (Rosenblum & Lewis, 2006).
Emotional Dissemblance. Emotional dissemblance is the ability to separate one’s emotional expressions from one’s internal feelings. Children learn how to control the emotions they display in order to avoid negative outcomes. During adolescence, teens begin to display expressions according to the norms of adult interaction (Rosenblum & Lewis, 2006); for example, the ability to outwardly display a facial expression of congratulations to a competitor immediately after a tough loss, while feeling intense emotion internally.
Emotional Competence. A successful transition to adulthood is associated with increased emotional competence across several skills during adolescence; for example, learning to regulate intense emotions, knowing how to attend to emotions without becoming overwhelmed by them, and learning how to manage interpersonal relationships in the midst of intense emotions (Rosenblum & Lewis, 2006).
Emotional Maturity - A high and appropriate level of emotional control and expression.
Prerequisites for Developing Emotional Maturity
Emotional maturity is a skill that can be nurtured and developed through psychoeducation, therapy, and coaching (Kaur et al., 2015).
Possessing or developing the following characteristics provides the foundation for developing emotional maturity:
Personal Reflection & Self-Awareness. Self-awareness and a willingness to reflect on one’s emotions and behaviors are crucial for the growth and development of emotional maturity (Herwig et al., 2010).
Openness to Feedback. Personal growth and emotional maturity are dependent on our willingness to accept and learn from constructive criticism (McEnrue et al., 2009).
Commitment to Growth. Personal growth is hard work and requires a dedication to ongoing personal development and emotional learning (Bauer & McAdams, 2004).
Empathy. The ability to identify, interpret, and share the feelings of others is integral to emotional maturity (McNaughton, 2016).
Resilience. All personal growth requires the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties and adapt to change (Still, 2023).
Sources: 1 2 3 ⚜ More: Notes & References ⚜ Writing Resources PDFs
There are some children who exhibit the same (or almost similar) level of emotional maturity of adults surrounding them, depending on the circumstances. Consider these notes and incorporate which ones are most suitable for your own story. Hope you're doing well yourself, and that this helps with your writing! :)

I saw this video with Steve Ballmer asking a job interview question where he's thinking of a number between 1 and 100 and if you get it on the first guess he gives you $5, otherwise he says "high" or "low" and if you get it on the second guess he gives you $4, then $3, $2, $1, zero, and if you get it on the seventh guess you owe him a dollar; the question is: should you play the game? (assuming you are profit maximising entity and not someone who just wants to spend more time in the company of Steve Ballmer).
now the obvious answer is that you're going to do a binary search where you say 50, then either 25 or 75, etc. etc. because that's the fastest way to narrow down an unknown number in a range.
however, there are numbers that take 7 guesses to reach if you're doing binary search over a range of 100 elements, so if he's playing adversarially -- and this is Steve Ballmer, you know he is -- then you're guaranteed to be out a dollar and should not play the game.
I was wondering, since you know he's going to pick one of the numbers that takes 7 guesses if you do a typical binary search, is there some way you can take advantage of that insight to get it in fewer guesses? but I don't think there is: there are 37 such numbers and they are evenly spread across the full range from 1..100, so in order to narrow it down you would have to-- do a binary search, which brings you back to the original problem.
(whether a number takes six guesses or seven guesses also depends on added wrinkle of whether you try the lower number first or the higher number when you've narrowed it down to an adjacent pair of numbers, like 3..4; you don't know which strategy he's using, but even if you pick the other strategy you can at best break even).
we can do an expected value calculation:
1/100 chance of earning $5 2/100 chance of earning $4 4/100 chance of earning $3 8/100 chance of earning $2 16/100 chance of earning $1 32/100 chance of earning nothing 37/100 chance of losing a dollar
add all those up and I think we would expect to earn $20 every 100 games, but only if he's picking numbers randomly, which we know he isn't; actually an interesting example of how strategies that work well on random data might fail when facing a hostile adversary.

An astonishingly simple and comprehensive guide to avoiding airborne illness while traveling. Many of these tips work for trips to the pharmacy or grocery store too. Stay safe out there!
By Korin Miller
Whether you’re traveling domestically or heading abroad, feeling your best at your destination means you’ll get the most out of your trip. Unfortunately, COVID-19 is still out there, and cases are expected to climb again as we head into the winter months. By now you’re likely aware of basic COVID prevention strategies, but air travel presents unique challenges that can be tricky to navigate.
Luckily, you can take steps to lower the odds of picking up the illness on your next flight. To help you do just that, we asked doctors and health policy researchers how they lower their COVID risk while flying. Here’s what they recommend.
Wear a mask—before you’re even on the plane Many of us know this already, but it’s worth recalling: Research has found that wearing a well-fitting, high-quality mask like an N95 or KN95 lowers your chances of picking up COVID-19 by 83%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But when you wear a mask during your travels matters, says William Schaffner, MD, an infectious disease specialist and professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
“You really want to use your mask consistently around others, whether you’re in the airport or on that plane,” he says. Thomas A. Russo, MD, professor and chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University at Buffalo’s medical school, agrees. “Think about the whole process when you fly—going through the airport, checking in, boarding the plane, and being on the plane—you’re going to interact with people from all parts of the world… There’s a risk you might get COVID,” he says.
You can help protect yourself by always keeping your mask on—and wearing a relatively new one. Compared to a mask that’s gotten a lot of use, a fresh one will fit more snugly around the nose, cheeks, and chin and, in turn, catch particles more effectively.
Put the air vent to good use If you prefer not to wear a mask, you should take steps to protect yourself in other ways. For example, after you get to your seat, adjust the vent so the air blows over your face, suggests Sheldon H. Jacobson, PhD, a University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign professor and researcher whose work includes using data-driven risk assessments to inform public health policy.
Dr. Jacobson says most airplanes use high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters that catch microbes. Plus, cabin air is refreshed every few minutes, and a good portion comes from outside the aircraft. As a result, what blows out of the vents is pretty fresh. This strategy also keeps the air around you moving faster, meaning there’s less time for you to inhale any possible germs in the cabin, according to Dr. Jacobson. Still, if the person sitting next to you is coughing and sneezing, it’s best to wear a mask if you have one, he says. The filtration system can only do so much in that instance—and it’s not always on before takeoff and after landing.
Be mindful about how you eat and drink If you can, Dr. Russo suggests eating before you get to the airport to lessen the number of times you’ll need to remove your mask when you’re around other people. If you need to dine at the airport, Dr. Schaffner recommends looking for seating away from crowded areas.
When masks were still required for air travel, the suggested strategy for eating and drinking on board was to wait until your fellow fliers finished their snacks and refreshments. But now, Dr. Russo points out, the people around you may not mask up at all. Instead, he suggests dropping your mask, taking a sip or bite, and immediately pulling it back up. This lowers the odds you’ll breathe in viral particles that may be floating around, he explains.
Plan your vaccine around your trip Dr. Schaffner and Dr. Russo recommend getting the updated COVID-19 vaccine about two weeks before your trip. “It’s a good strategy,” Dr. Russo says. It usually takes 14 days or so for your body to build up immunity to COVID after getting vaccinated, according to the World Health Organization. This means your body should be ready to fight the virus by the time you fly, Dr. Russo says. Immunity also fades over time, making the timing of your shot important, he says.
Wash your hands…a lot Experts say you’re more likely to get COVID-19 from breathing in infectious droplets and particles than from touching things. But there’s still a chance you could get sick if you happen to touch a contaminated surface and then your eyes, nose, or mouth.
“What we’ve learned is that transmission from this virus from inanimate objects is very low, but it’s not zero,” Dr. Russo says. That’s why he recommends good hand hygiene while flying. You should wash your hands with soap and water, making sure to scrub for at least 20 seconds, and do so often: before and after security, whenever you use the bathroom, and before eating or touching your face. Hand sanitizer is also a good option in a pinch, Dr. Russo says. But he stresses that keeping your hands clean shouldn’t replace masking up. “It’s much, much less helpful than wearing a mask,” he says.

"India's efforts and progress in reducing preventable child deaths have been lauded as an "exemplar" by the United Nations, which cited the example of health initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat, and said the country has saved millions of young lives through strategic investments in its health system.
The United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation report, released Tuesday, cited the example of five “exemplar countries” in achieving child mortality reduction -- India, Nepal, Senegal, Ghana and Burundi -- highlighting diverse strategies that have accelerated progress in reducing preventable child deaths.
The report said these countries illustrate that with "political will, evidence-based strategies and sustained investments, even resource-constrained settings facing unique challenges can achieve substantial reductions in mortality, bringing the world closer to an end to preventable child deaths".
On India, the report said the country has made gains through health system investment...
The report highlighted that since 2000, India achieved an under-five mortality reduction of 70 per cent and a neonatal mortality reduction of 61 per cent, “driven by overlapping measures to increase health coverage, enhance available interventions and develop health infrastructure and human resources", the report said.
It cited the example of Ayushman Bharat, the world's largest health insurance scheme which provides annual coverage of nearly USD 5,500 per family per year.
It noted that every pregnant woman is entitled to free delivery (including caesarean section), and infant care provides free transport, medications, diagnostics and dietary support in public health institutions.
To ensure comprehensive coverage and equitable access to health services, India has strengthened infrastructure via the establishment of maternity waiting homes, maternal and child health wings, newborn stabilisation units, sick newborn care units, mother care units and a dedicated programme for birth defect screening, the report said...
“This ensures millions of healthy pregnancies and thriving live births each year. India has also prioritised the training and deployment of skilled birth attendants, such as midwives and community health workers, to provide appropriate maternal and child health services,” it said.
The report noted that additionally, data systems and digital surveillance of maternal, newborn and child health indicators are continuously improved to support evidence-based decision-making...
Other Countries that Did Well
The UN agency also said that several low and lower-middle-income countries have surpassed the global decline in under-five mortality since 2000.
Angola, Bhutan, Bolivia, Cabo Verde, India, Morocco, Senegal, Tanzania and Zambia have all cut their under-five mortality rate by more than two thirds since 2000.
In 2000, the country with the highest burden of under-five measles mortality was India, with only 56 per cent of infants vaccinated for measles and 189,000 deaths from measles.
By 2023, the infant measles vaccination rate had increased to 93 per cent, and under-five deaths due to the disease decreased by 97 per cent to 5,200 measles-related deaths...
Since 2000, child deaths [globally] have dropped by more than half and stillbirths by over a third, fuelled by sustained investments in child survival worldwide...
"Millions of children are alive today because of the global commitment to proven interventions, such as vaccines, nutrition, and access to safe water and basic sanitation,” UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said.
