I know this is too much angst but do you think that Kai seeing that Cinder got engaged to someone else even though he was already married, do you think that he dreams of what his life could have been like with Cinder.?

hey, it really is too much angst, but i don't mind writing it, I have written another version of the same idea here. I couldn't much imagination into this, since my moral obligation for Daiyu (Kai's OC wife) far outweighted, the need for Kai to keep on loving Cinder in his marriage to Daiyu, and that's probbaly why this fic has a slightly different style than the other ones I write!

Kai's Perspective:

"Your Majesty," his media aide called, turning Kai around. He sees her running the small threshold of the media room before she stops before him.

"Yes," He answers, quite shocked by Zoey's behaviour and dishevelled appearance.

"Uh- Dateh wants to have a word with you."

"Very well, I will speak to him after the announcement," He said, fixing his suit, as he stood.

"Dateh wants to speak with you now, Your Majesty," Zoey asked of him.

"And what's so important that it can't wait after?" he questioned, unable to realize Dateh's unseemly demand. He was in the middle of one of the Commonwealth's most important announcements regarding refugee policy; he couldn't leave it hanging for something less worthwhile.

"Let's not discuss it here, Your Majesty," Zoey declared, putting Kai further into obliviousness.

Sighing, he rose from his seat, asking one of his assistants to push the recording by a few minutes, whatever Dateh would have to say, she would have to do it soon.

"I hope this piece of information couldn't absolutely wait until after," Kai muttered, as they walked out of the room, Zoey furiously nodding, a nervous spring in her step.

"Your Majesty," Dateh said, relief visible on his face-

"I cannot possibly think of any reason to take me out at the umpteenth moment," Kai exclaimed, his fingers itching to pull at his hair.

"Kaito," Torin began, in haste, "-maybe you should sit down."

"What's wrong?" Kai asked, turning around to Zoey, who would be easily influenced by his presence to answer.

"Your Majesty," Zoey stuttered, "It's about Miss Blackburn."

And with that, Kai could feel his heartbeat skyrocket. However, he breathed through his mouth, keeping the jittering nerves in check, as he enquired, "What about her?"

He hoped the edge in his voice wasn't a giveaway for anything, Cinder hadn't been in his life for years. Kai wouldn't want anyone to think he hadn't moved on from that part of his life. Being lost, Kai didn't catch the swift glances between his trusts.

"She is getting married, Your Majesty," Dateh provided, at last, all his worry for her well-being vanished, and its place was taken by grief that had nowhere to go. Kai couldn't get the picture of a bride Cinder walking down the aisle to someone. That wasn't him. It didn't matter, he had been on the other side of the aisle, waiting for his bride, before. Kai was married, it was inevitable that Cinder would tie the knot someday.

"Well, then let's wish the Lunar Ambassador a happily married life," Kai suggested, a dry chuckle ringing in his ears, "- that isn't enough reason to cancel our announcement!"

"It isn't," Dated noted, "-however, the reporters would hunt on your wounds, and we wouldn't want you to feel obligated to answer anything you don't want to," Torin finished.

"We aren't running from a trifle news like this," Kai revoked, heart being crushed with the weight of his wrecked life. He had a wife, Kai reminded himself, who he loved very much. It doesn't matter what Cinder does, for Kai has done nothing different.

Kai straightened his collar with a measured grace. “We won't be stopping our conference for this,” he repeated, voice flat. His hand dropped from his hair, fingers curling slightly.

Torin and Dateh exchanged a look but didn’t press further. Even Zoey, whose usual chatter filled the quietest corners of the palace, had gone silent.

Kai steps inside the media room, sitting at the large table, as Torin finds his seat on the right, while Dateh gives some last-minute instructions, before settling down.

The walls that he had faced since his 16th birthday, looked too white, too big now. His mouth was dry, as he tried to lick his tongue at the roof of his mouth to keep away the tightness in his throat.

One of the cameras flickered to life, red dot steady. Someone laid the speech file before him, the numbers that needed to be mentioned in the course of this conference.

Kai barely registered it.

The words on the screen blurred. He blinked.

Cinder is getting married.

It shouldn't matter. It was reasonable for her to find love. But, the thought of her—dressed in white, her metal hand clutching someone else’s fingers, her face turned toward someone else’s vows—twisted something inside him he thought had long since calcified.

Kai pressed a knuckle to his lips, exhaling sharply.

She was getting married. He'd been married for 3 years.

And yet, as he stared at the blinking cursor, all he could think about was the Lunar countryside house Cinder had built. How he had helped arrange furniture and chosen rugs, along with paintings that would eerie their friends. Kai had seen that house a total of 3 times, never again, and probably never would.

The conference started. Kai said the right words, nodding when necessary. Deflected with wit and warmth where needed. He never let them know about his inner emotional turmoil.

All the audience saw was an emperor confident in his vision, benevolent enough to make room for refugee policy, about public growth.

No one saw the way he blinked too often.

No one saw how tightly his hands were folded beneath the desk.

In the midst of it, there was 1 question. About her, but Kai deflected it with humour, and the reporters were quick to get their cue. This was an important national policy press conference, it had no place for gossip.

Afterwards, as the applause rang in his wake, Kai exited the room.

The moment the doors shut behind him, he pulled at his hair, unbuttoning the top 2 buttons of his shirt, trying to get air in his lungs.

"Tell Torin to hold my calls for the next hour," he told, the waiting attendant.

He walked all the way to the 5th floor, not looking at anything, before he entered his chambers, slamming the door shut. His forehead tilted to the Rosewood frame and wondered if one could die out of the maximity of the grief he felt in the moment.

Kai wanted to bash his head so hard against the wood, that he would never have to think about her. This agony hurt him, it wasn't right to anyone.

Daiyu, his wife, didn't deserve a husband who was lost in the thoughts of another. Kai should despise himself, but he couldn't help the ghosts that never seemed to leave. He had loved Cinder, given her everything possible for him, but on the soft nights when he got lost in his desires and duty, he had come to realize, he didn't love Cinder anymore.

He's just been unable to get rid of the life they had imagined together, and every time something monumental happened, this forbidden future would come to him, leaving behind a man, who had lost everything, but still continued to give to this idea.

He might have loved Cinder a lot, but had come to hate the memory of her, the way it continued to taint his present.

Even now, as grief fills his chest, he can't help but think about her. If she stays in the countryside house and thinks about him, or if there are days when she goes over the mechanics of appliances, Kai is too mindless to understand.

The images keep on coming to him, sitting cross-legged in the library as she pointed out errors in the policy-making, arguing with him about Lunar amendments as she packed her belongings, and how he would laugh when her glamour changed so that she looked like the hardships of court.

The mentions of Selene Blackburn were few, infrequent with age, there was no need to talk about a Lunar Ambassador, who never came their way. No need to speak about the once Lunar Queen, in times of peace.

Kai collapsed on the cushioned sofa of his office, the weight of his body too great to carry. A sigh left his lips, unlike the ones he had exhaled all those years ago after the peace treaties, the summits—not unlike the night before his own marriage, when he’d sat on this very couch and stared out of the same window, wondering if memory could feel like betrayal.

It doesn't matter he keeps telling himself. But his throat ached, the memory of Cinder like smoke in his lungs. Perhaps that was what she had always been—fire. Not meant to stay. Meant to blaze and vanish and leave behind warmth that eventually faded.

"Congratulations, Selene," he whispered to no one. It came out broken, but the words had more impact, like breaking free.

There was no more thinking of her. Kai was too stuck on what they could have been, but there was no more of that life.

They had tried. And it didn't matter much now, for what use was love, if it couldn't survive reality?
