Boygenius, an underrated indie rock supergroup
Tumblr media
This is my appreciation post for Boygenius, the indie rock supergroup formed by 3 queer sad indie icons: Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus & Julien Baker. The three of them were fans of each other’s music, then met along their career touring with each of their solo projects, became great friends and later on decided to release a self-titled EP in 2018. They also collaborated in Hayley Williams' debut album on the song "Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris" and constantly do back up vocals on each other's albums. This friendly energy is very palpable in their music together, as the Boygenius EP feels completely genuine and not forced, like there was a natural merging of their styles (even though their solo works are not that similar) without anyone imposing their will. If you watch their interviews you would see that they agree, and also that they often mention that the fact that they all had dealt with the pressure of the music industry made this opportunity to just have fun making music with friends was probably their most free and honest work.
All of this makes the Boygenius EP very enjoyable to listen to and their live performances are very soulful, thrilling and genuine. Personally, I love when you can visibly tell that musicians are really feeling the music they play and are having a great time on stage, which I think is always the case with Boygenius. Here’s the link to the EP if you want to give it a listen: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZqsyBiYZFQ0P5s7qJzI2Xd5Cvh6eODmQ
The acoustic performance at NPR’s Tiny Desk also makes the song 10x sadder, if you wanna check that out too lmao:

Also I know ya’ll might be already familiar with Phoebe at least since she’s been in the spotlight for collaborating with Taylor Swift on “Nothing New (Taylor’s version)”, but I wanted to give a little shoutout to her and Julien and Lucy by sharing my favorite songs from their solo projects.

Feliz noche, buenas letras y sabores.

Hello! I’ll just keep it short, I have neurological problems on the right side of my body cause my body got tired of my dumb ass, any who, I’m sick and at home for the time being, and I’m loosing my mind. >:D I’ll be reposting and finding more content, just so that it’s in the cloud and internet if someone searches for it and finds the music. Idk, i have no idea how the internet works. I was certain a small robot baby lived within the computer when I was 7 and my brother showed me some robotic thing on an old ass dell computer and now that it’s gotten this far, perhaps it’s not a baby in the computer but telekinetic robot babies doing it from the comfort of their homes. It would make it easier for them instead of shrinking them and stuff, unless it’s their unborn robot fetuses they harvest in our phones, but I think that would be silly. Thank you robot babies!

On realizing you’ve been raised and influenced by an overwhelming, disproportionately male music scene
I remember some years ago I was talking to a friend and he asked me “if you created a playlist of the music that influenced you the most in your teens, what would it look like?”. After naming most of the grungy, indie/alt rock bands that I used to be obsessed with I came to a -very obvious- realization: they were, with very few exceptions, all male artists. “But why though?”, I thought. I mean, I also listened to various pop non-men singers when I was a kid, but is it really that I never liked any rock artists that weren’t men?
After a lot of thinking I concluded that one of the reasons probably was that the people around me who influenced and shared my taste in music (my brother, my male cousins, my male friends/bandmates) never really valued women in music. I remember growing up hearing comments like “women who try singing rock songs always feel like they’re doing too much/sound bad” or “I just think that women don’t have voices suitable for rock genres” (I could talk about everything that’s wrong with those sentences but maybe that’s a topic for another time). I guess as an influenceable teen I just went along with it, never questioned it and never actively did anything to prove them wrong. But as I realized it, I felt robbed of the opportunity of discovering many awesome artists just because of the shame around it, so I immediately started my journey immersing myself in great music that I never let myself enjoy before.
However, as I did that I also realized how unfair it is that we hold non-men artists to such a higher standard than men when it comes to determining their music genre, especially in the rock genre. I discovered many female and non-men artists who made music that was very noticeably rock (heavy distorted guitars, heavy drums, rock lyrics, rock rhythm) being always labeled as pop rock, indie pop or even just pop. Some people say it’s because they use synthesizers in their music or because they have a couple of dancey songs, but I just can’t buy that excuse. If that were true, then we probably wouldn't say that famous bands like The Strokes, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, The Kooks or Cage The Elephant (nothing against them, just naming a few that come to mind) are “rock bands” considering their many, many pop/ballad synth songs. I think the way sexism and the music industry influenced pop culture throughout the years has resulted in society unconsciously and automatically associating non-men artists with pop music, even if they don’t fit the description. I also think that this last conclusion is a lot similar to the idea we discussed in class about music made by latin american artists always being always labeled just as latin music as if it was all just the same.
Maybe this long, long rant is just food for thought but I find myself reflecting on it a lot. Anyways, here are some songs by female rock and indie artists that I really like, give them a listen!

Toro Y Moi - Cola (Unofficial Music Video)
Dir. David Dean Burkhart
David Dean Burkhart is a visual artist who specialises in repurposing old footage that has long been forgotten, and cuts it to new music. He makes unofficial music videos which have sometimes gone on to become the official video for that artist. He has over 160 videos on his YouTube channel.
This montage is made up of footage from old adverts for drinks, liquor and perfume from the 80's and 90's. The fast cut pace of the visuals, combined with the more sombre style song, seems to show up the old commercials’ lack of heart and soul by repeating the same glances, by similar looking actors and models, over and over again.
