HIIIII thank you for asking me this. Big grin. I will do my best to answer. If the explanations get weird, just know that trying to capture how I interpret the gender of some of the Sinners is a bit Difficult. It’s like trying to put wind in a jar. They’re all either outside of the binary or gender apathetic or both, but i only listed the ones that i can explain the best since it’d be too long if i started rambling on about something i can’t fully grasp in label words yet >>

Yi Sang: my best descriptor for what i think of its gender is that it oscillates between… something in the binary and crowgender. the first time i had this thought it was a bit late, i assigned it the word crowflux but i fear that that’s not a thing.

Faust: “i’m probably not in the binary but i have a job so idrc about that right now” feels little connection to binary gender, but dae’ve got stuff to do. i associate Faust with the Celestial Alignment System though.

Don Quixote: solstian or helian, perhaps anything under the solarian umbrella. i like Galactic Alignment System Don in general, i associate that beam with space and stars!!!!

Ryōshū: infernic/hellgender, but I feel like she'd have a lot of labels, more than just that one. rather than them being their own separate things, all of the labels amass into one collective image, like a collage. i also sort of associate her gender with bugs and insects to some extent

Hong Lu: prior to Canto VIII i was like “oh yeah jadegender beam” but i feel like after that it’d be anything except jadegender. thumbs up. I remember being hazy the other day and conjuring the phrase jade-apathy, similar to gender apathy but with relation to being a jade/jadegender. until I feel that I can phrase it better, that is what I shall go with

Ishmael: whenever i think of Ishmael’s gender, all i see is an image of Ishy staring at her reflection in the water with no ripples distorting the image watching back. The Rippleless. I don't think that there's a label for this, but it's weirdly clear compared to some of the other ones i'm getting (cough Outis cough Heathcliff cough Gregor cough I can't put them into words)

Sinclair: ohhh I just thought of Sinclair label shopping with Ryō, im taking that and running. I often associate Sinclair with plants and fungi etc, der collection of labels have a similar way of working to Ryō, but for some reason I'm a big fan of mossgender Sinclair.

the thinggggg the thing about kira and jadzia is that. jadzia is so so so full of joy and the measured, steady, unshakeable optimism of someone much older than she is. but she wasn't always like that, she was a lonely, anxious, nerdy kid who "grew up" 300 years in the span of a single medical/spiritual operation. and a big part of that experience was the dedicated training she got towards knowing herself, knowing her needs and desires and how to meet them, so that she wouldn't get drowned out by the rest of dax. right

and she comes to ds9 and she meets kira, a lonely, anxious fighter who was an adult by the time she was 10, who never had the opportunity to know more about herself than what was strictly necessary--that she is strong, that she makes a good leader, that she can do anything she sets her mind to. but she never figured out what she might like to set her mind to, because freedom was the only thing it was possible to want.

and jadzia sees her old self in kira's face, in the bowstring-tight lines of her, and jadzia takes her by those aching shoulders and says Hey. do you want to know yourself? do you want to know what joy is? do you want to play?

Hi there! I’m a huge DS9 fan, and I wanted to thank you and the other DS9 writers for how respectfully you portrayed Jadzia’s gender history. I understand from your previous answers that you weren’t necessarily thinking of her as trans (allegorically or otherwise) while writing her, but, considering the era you were working in, it’s really amazing to me how clearly and forcefully you chose not to go in a transphobic direction with her character. Like, she’s an attractive young woman who frequently and unashamedly tells people that (in her own words) she used to be a man, and she was in a TV show that began airing a year after The Crying Game came out; it’s very easy to imagine a version of the show where she is seen as (to use Julia Serano’s term) a deceiver and the object of either disgust or perverse fascination or both because of her change of sex. But instead, she’s allowed to be proud of her history and unashamed of her sexuality without either being seen as a threat to her womanhood. No one cares that she only came into a female body recently. She has nothing to hide or be ashamed of. She is loved for who she is. I’m a queer trans woman, and I mostly live in stealth (in the “I let people assume I’m a cis woman” sense) because of the discrimination and othering I’ve faced when I’ve come out to people in the past, which can be deeply isolating. At the risk of being embarrassingly sincere, Dax helps give me a vision of the future worth looking forward to. I truly can’t thank you enough <3

That tag about Kira reminded me of an interview Siddig did where he mentioned that a lot of writers either write women as "man but sexier" or "defining character trait is being woman" instead of approaching them as like... Whole individual entities where their gender is just one element of many.

oh 1000% and it's always so obvious bc you've got characters who on paper are so interesting but the writers get so dumbstruck by the fact they're a woman they keep half-assing storylines. Many such cases I could list but we don't have all day

Like, it is why Kira works so well bc they just Don't Do That for so many of her greatest hits (Duet, Second Skin, Shakaar, etc). They actually remembered to make her a person.

Meanwhile poor Jadzia Dax they simply forget to do much with her character beyond perfunctory Science Officer stuff or Sexy Woman Shit where she's practically fainting on a couch.

Which, isn't to say there aren't some great Jadzia moments across the series but I do think they're too aware of her being a woman bc it's part of the gimmick of her character. Like, her being this "pretty young thing" now instead of an Old Man is one of the first things we know about her and that kinda fumbles shit.

introducing ds9 to a friend (yippee) and it turns out i had totally forgotten the plot of past prologue, but um. we all agree that julian's spy kink started when garak shoved him into that changing room, right

I happen to have the headcanon that Quark is actually a really good singer, but he just doesn't do it out in the open a lot. Like Rom knows about because they grew up together and heard him all the time, Ishka once told Quark that he could "earn a living worth of latinum" by actually pursuing it as a career, Nog knows cause Quark used to sing him lullaby's when he was younger, and Jadzia probably also knows about it because she caught Quark humming and singing to himself in the bar's storeroom one day.

Anyway, all this say that when Odo walks into Quarks on an extremely crowded and lively night to find a drunk Jadzia goading various members of the crew into karaoke he stays and sits down to watch only to be finds himself complete dumbstruck when an equally tipsy Quark starts singing a slow love song in an absolutely enchanting voice. Halfway through the song they lock eyes across the room right as a particularly lovey-dovey lyric comes up. Odo doesn't dare look away from the magnetic pull of Quark's hooded eyes and enlarged pupils looking straight at him. As the soft music swells all around them the room is suddenly empty, nobody but them between these walls and the vast expanse of space and stars. Odo starts to feel himself melt and finds that it's getting harder and harder to maintain his form the longer he watches Quark and the blush filling his cheeks and his tongue dash out to wet his lips and-

The moment is over as quick as it started.

The song ends, everyone claps and cheers, the night eventually ends and compliments are thrown left and right at Quark's singing abilities.

Meanwhile Odo's trying to figure out a way to simultaneously tell Quark he's never appeared more beautiful while still somehow insulting and degrading him without actually letting him know that Odo cares.

Hi! ✨ I was wondering what you thought about Duke's part in the latest episode of WFA?

Hi!! So I was very optimistic given last week's We Are Robin intro, and my hopes aren't dashed or anything. (I don't have FastPass btw so I'm talking about the latest free one!). Duke was fine here, him pushing back against Damian is maybe the first time he's stood against anyone in WFA so it's definitely an improvement! The conflict fuels Damian's character, though, not Duke's, which is still disappointing.

Obviously in canon neither Duke nor Damian would've been so nice in their argument, but WFA is a universe where every emotion is halved so I'm not mad about that. I am a bit wary about Damian vs. We Are Robin kids, and the rhetoric about 'field training' and 'field readiness'; firstly, this is a watered down version of what we already got in Robin War, and secondly it shows a misunderstanding of what We Are Robin is. Having Damian beat up Riko and Dax, even if he's called out for it, just kinda fuels the image that We Are Robin aren't 'real' Robins and need proper Bat training. Idk this was an issue in Robin War too, but the point of We Are Robin is that they're not trained like Bats! They're something separate, and that is their strength!!

I just think a WAR + Damian story could be so good if you treated both sides as equals. They both challenge each other' ideas about Robin; Damian has relationships with both Duke and Izzy; in fact, a story about Duke's loyalty between Damian and WAR would be so intriguing! This episode uses Duke + WAR more or less as a prop for Damian, so it isn't the best, but hopefully it's just a temporary thing and we actually get WAR/Duke spotlight next.

Anyway I will stay tuned in as long as We Are Robin are here so I'm hopeful they'll have bigger character/story moments later!! This is just the second ep they've been in so we'll see. For Duke, the major things WFA has left to fix are: 1) his personality (we still need way less 'timid'/normal Duke); 2) mention his parents more!! 'i don't talk about my parents much' are you kidding; 3) differentiate his relationships a little more. He should not interact with Cass and Dick in the same way! But this is kinda a WFA problem across the board rather than a Duke-specific one. Curious to hear other Duke fans' thoughts!
