Is Klaus' legal logic of The Bad Beginning sensible?
* Joint Theory: @unfortunatetheorist with @snicketstrange *
Klaus's speech to the audience during the events of The Bad Beginning had a carefully thought-out structure, anchored in deeply rooted legal, but more so ethical, principles. In defence of his sister, who was forced into a marriage, Klaus appears to have adopted a multifaceted approach to challenge the marriage's validity.
Firstly, John Locke.
John Locke was one of the first people to suggest that humans have natural rights. He also wrote a book about this called the 'Two Treatises of Government'.
Klaus likely invoked John Locke's arguments on natural rights to contend that the marriage was not consensual and, therefore, violated his sister's fundamental rights to life and liberty. The idea that the bride must sign "with her own hand" is interpreted here not literally, but as an indicator of action "of her own free will," supported by Locke's principles.
Secondly, Thurgood Marshall.
Thurgood Marshall was the first black Supreme Court Justice of the USA, who fought for the rights of black citizens against Jim Crow's extremely racist ideologies.
His defence of the 14th Amendment may have been used by Klaus to argue that, in cases of ambiguity or doubt, the judge's decision should lean towards protecting the more vulnerable party. This point strengthens the point that, if there is doubt about the how valid Violet's consent is, the legal and ethical obligation is to invalidate the marriage. The 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution is crucial for establishing constitutional rights and consists of various clauses. The most relevant for Klaus's case is probably the Equal Protection Clause, which states that no state may "deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." Klaus may have leaned especially on this clause to argue that, in situations of uncertainty, i.e. his sister's forced marriage, the interpretation/application of the law should be done in a manner that protects (in this case) Violet. This would align with the principles of the 14th Amendment, using it for equal protection under the law to invalidate the marriage and protect his sister's rights.
Third, Ida B. Wells.
Ida B. Wells was, similar to Thurgood Marshall, an early civil rights campaigner, who campaigned for anti-lynching (a word which here means, opposing the brutally violent act known as lynching).
Klaus likely drew inspiration from Ida B. Wells to assert that everyone has the right to be heard and protected by authorities, regardless of their age or origin. This argument would serve to legitimize his own standing as his sister's defender in court, neutralizing any potential prejudice against him for being a child or, perhaps, belonging to a minority (he and his sisters are Jewish).
Moreover, the presence of a judge at the ceremony should not be viewed as merely a formality, but a control mechanism to ensure mutual consent, something that resonates strongly with Locke and Marshall's ideals about the role of government and law. Thus, if either of the spouses gave any evidence to the judge that the marriage was conducted under duress, the judge would be obligated to invalidate the marriage. Violet's chosen signal was to sign the document with her left hand instead of her right hand. As the judge explained, the marriage could be invalidated due to this discreet yet appropriate signal.
Lastly, the word "apocryphal" that Lemony uses to describe Klaus's argument suggests a non-conventional but insightful interpretation of the law, something that seems to echo Marshall's "doubtful insights" and Wells' "moral conviction." Instead of resorting to literalism ('literally' - with her own hand, i.e. Violet's dominant hand), Klaus's argument was much deeper and grounded, touching on the very essence of what legislation and the role of judges are. That's why Justice Strauss was so fascinated by the young boy's speech.
In summary, the historical references evidence that Klaus wove these diverse elements into a cohesive and compelling argument, utilising the legacy of these thinkers to question and, ideally, invalidate his sister Violet's forced marriage.

Before anything else, I am a writer.
I would also call myself a singer. Or a textile artist, maybe. I could be a sibling, or a friend, or a student, or a baker, or a gardener, or a cook. There is an incredible number of labels you could put on me that would fit.
When I was a kid, I would deny so vehemently that I ever wanted to be a writer. I used to read like it was breathing, and when my relatives would interrupt me in the middle of a story to ask if I'd ever want to author one myself, I would tell them that reading and writing were two different things, thank you very much, and just because I was a reader didn't mean I was a writer.
But, through that love for reading, I ended up figuring out what the phrase "Stockholm Syndrome" meant much younger than you might expect. Think eight or nine, after reading the "Series of Unfortunate Events." Which, if you didn't know, is a notably bad place to garner vocabulary. Lemony Snicket is in the habit of explaining words in a context entirely different from what they actually mean. Still, I have a vivid memory of sitting in a corner of the living room on Thanksgiving as a nine-year-old (reading, naturally), and hearing my sister's boyfriend ask my mom for clarification on the concept of Stockholm Syndrome. I looked up from my book and told him what it was -- much to the chagrin of my parents, who were wondering where I'd learned it.
It's ironic that it was a book that introduced me to the concept of Stockholm Syndrome, and that it was one of the few phrases that Lemony Snicket ever explained correctly. I doubt you're unfamiliar with it, but it means to be trapped or held captive by something, and to grow to love it anyway.
When I think about it now, I realize that it was inevitable that I learned to love to write. I also hated learning how to read, but my dad taught me before I even started kindergarten, and I loved knowing I was better at it than the other kids. It was my way of setting myself apart. I drank so desperately from the books I read that I couldn't help but fill myself with words.
And then, just as inevitably, they had nowhere to go.
That was the first part of my own experience with Stockholm Syndrome. I was folded into myself like origami, with so much to say and no space for it. Every word I'd ever read was crammed into my lungs, and I didn't know what to do with them. It wasn't until I found other people's writing (like Broadway shows I loved, intersectional queer lit, characters that looked and felt and breathed like me, etc.) that I ever wanted to make my own.
I didn't start writing until I was 13. I found my first inspiration -- and what it was, I'll never tell because lord, is it embarrassing -- and I made something out of it. It felt like reaching down into my chest and taking hold of something I barely knew was there and turning myself out onto the page, but in a different font. Whether that be Times New Roman or the chicken scratch I had going in 4 different notebooks simultaneously, there was always something to say. I could never get away from it. And, as the Stockholm Syndrome mention might suggest, I grew to love it.
There is a part of me now that is inextricable from my writing. I put words together to get feelings out, in a way that is both authentic to myself and more beautiful than anything I have ever been. I put words together to process what I've been through. I put words together to write lives that I've never lived, and I grow vicariously through them. I know that love exists because I write it into existence. I am all that I need to be through the words I put down.
At the end of the day, yes. I am fully and completely bound to my writing. I am trapped in a way that I will never experience elsewhere. I would be nothing without it.
But fuck, I love it.

I'm trying to work on my 'show don't tell' but struggle with describing smells when tackling senses. Do you have any smelly word resources? :)
Some Words to Describe Smell
Acrid - strong, biting (e.g., something on fire)
Ambrosial - fragrant; having a pleasant smell
Antiseptic - a clean scent
Aromatic - having a strong or distinctive smell
Aura - smell surrounding something
Balm - soothing scent
Bouquet - blend of floral scents
Briny - salty
Burnt - unpleasant, smoky, sharp scent
Clean - very light scent, clean and natural
Earthy - recently dug or tilled soil
Essence - basic, natural scent
Fetid - decaying or rotting smell
Fishy - smelling of fish; pungent, strong, unpleasant
Flowery - fragrance similar to flowers
Foul - being odorous and impure
Fragrant - things, such as flowers or spices, with sweet or agreeable odors
Fresh - natural smelling, rather than artificial
Gamy - having the flavor of game; smelly
Gaseous - a chemical odorant, similar to the smell of rotten eggs
Heady - very strong aroma
Lemony - tart, piquant citrus notes
Lilac - rich floral scent combining rose with vanilla

Overpowering - too strong of a smell
Perfumed - artificial fragrance, not natural-smelling
Pheromone - natural scents
Piney - crisp, refreshing evergreen smell
Piquant - pleasantly pungent, sharp, or spicy taste
Plastic - artificial chemical polymer odor
Pungent - strong fragrance
Putrid - stench of decay
Rancid - spoiled; food that has gone bad
Reeking - a strong or disagreeable fume or odor
Rotten - spoiled, rancid, unpalatable
Scented - having a perfumed smell
Sharp - a strong scent
Skunky - noxious smell that lingers; sulfuric (like rotten eggs) odor
Smoky - scent of burning wood
Spoiled - an unpleasant, rotten smell
Stagnant - a stale smell
Stench - stink; a characteristic repugnant quality
Sterile - a sense of cleanliness; the scent of cleaning products
Sweet - sugary smell
Tart - sharp fragrance
Tempting - having an appeal; enticing
Trace - a tiny amount of fragrance
Whiff - a fleeting scent
Wispy - hint of fragrance in the air
Woodsy - characteristic or suggestive of woods; forest-like smell
Olfactory imagery engages the sense of smell. Scent is one of the most direct triggers of memory and emotion, but can be difficult to write about. Since taste and smell are so closely linked, you’ll sometimes find the same words (such as “sweet”) used to describe both. Simile is common in olfactory imagery, because it allows writers to compare a particular scent to common smells like dirt, grass, manure, or roses.

I love writing and language because even though all of these were intentionally written to "be bad" they all carry rich meaning through their "badness" which would make them fucking incredible tools in the right place. It's fun to even idly try and create a context for these to work in. The situations.

here's a bit of fun trivia that will allow you to become the most annoying person in your social circle for the month of march: no one can agree on what a shamrock is.
i think most people have a vague sense that a shamrock is a clover. this is also the most common traditional identification. however, most images of shamrocks are actually of wood sorrel. there is some debate about whether the clover or wood sorrel is the Real Original shamrock, but the point remains that people generally treat them as the same thing.
"this is a minor mistake," you may think. "they are both small and have three leaves. they must be closely related." they are not. they are not only in different genuses, not only in different families, but in different orders. their nearest shared clade is the fabids, which isn't saying much as that clade contains over 50,000 species. clover and wood sorrel are as related to each other as they are to oak trees, pitcher plants, kudzu, pumpkins, peanuts, blackberries, and poinsettia.
also, fun fact, wood sorrels are edible and delicious with a lemony flavor (disclaimer: do not eat if you have kidney problems. always make sure you can 100% identify a plant before you eat it) while clover is not edible and tastes like grass. trust me if you are snacking on them you learn the difference real fast.
in this google image search for "shamrock," the red squares are all wood sorrel, and the single yellow square is an actual clover.
Tumblr media
so below, for all your know-it-all needs, is a crash course in recognizing wood sorrel:
the best identifier i find is that while both tend to have three leaves, but the leaves of clover are round or flat at the ends (sometimes with a tiiiiny little notch), while the leaves of wood sorrel are heart-shaped. many clovers also have a white ring imprinted on their leaves, like you can see in the google image result above. not all do, so if it's absent, that doesn't guarantee it's wood sorrel, but if it's present, it's definitely clover.
here's a webpage about the cultural significance of "shamrocks"
image 1 is wood sorrel
Tumblr media
image 2 is clover
Tumblr media
image 3 is wood sorrel again
Tumblr media
okay your turn, pop quiz with more pics i found on google images. clover or wood sorrel?

so ateez released some multi-use fragrance oils exclusively to japan recently, each one customised for each individual member. although i can't get my hands on them just yet, i do have access to their scent profiles, so for anyone else who's desperately curious about what they might smell like, i've attempted to describe them all below!
fragrance terms for reference:
top notes: the initial scents smelled on application - usually the lightest/sharpest scents used (e.g. citrus or super powdery/light floral scents);
middle notes: the scents that appear once the top notes have faded - generally considered the central core or heart of a fragrance. they're usually fuller/smoother than top notes (e.g. cinnamon/spices or fuller floral scents like jasmine);
base notes: the scents that form the foundational structure of a fragrance, underpinning the top and middle notes and generally being the most long-lived scents that linger after application (usually woody scents, or musks);
accords: blends of notes that form the character profile of a perfume (e.g. woody or floral). they're the text in coloured bubbles in the images below the cut.
some general impressions:
yeosang & wooyoung seem to have the most overtly masculine-smelling oils.
seonghwa & san seem to have the most traditionally feminine-smelling oils.
hongjoong, yunho, mingi, and jongho all seem to have relatively gender-neutral scents. yunho's might lean the most masculine of the four, but all four are fairly ubiquitously pleasing.
all of them are Very Fitting imo!! whoever put these scent profiles together did a really good job of capturing the essence of each of the guys.
individual oils are under the cut because there are 8 of them:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hongjoong:
hongjoong's oil's scent profile sounds to me like it'd smell like the air after warm spring rain, a fresh forest, and home. the top notes mix orange-citrus with herby scents to create a fresh initial scent. i don't know if this is the case for everyone, but for me, if mint is a top note, it immediately becomes the most dominant scent in the whole thing (with a few small exceptions).
hongjoong's whole scent is pretty light! i mention a lot of headiness in a lot of the others, but for the most part, hongjoong lacks it. jasmine, magnolia, and amber provide the brunt of any robustness in this oil, but white musk is a cleaner, lighter alternative to musk, lacking that deep, animalic base and instead being something softer and more powdery. olibanum is somewhat lemony, while still being green and herby in scent, with a touch of pepperiness and woodiness that blends nicely into the sandalwood, which has a light, green initial top note that then melts into something creamy, rich, and deep-woody.
tl;dr - largely minty/herby, with a citrusy undertone that melts into a nice, rich woodiness towards the end. comforting is definitely right here - it's relaxing, not particularly overpowering or overly intoxicating like some of the other oils :)
seonghwa:
as i said to @starseongs a few days ago, this scent profile gives sensual, in control femininity, which i absolutely LOVE for him, but it isn't delicate by any means - it's got the strength of a more masculine scent, with plenty of animalic notes from the top all the way to the base that are offset by sharper, fresher notes to prevent it from becoming too cloying.
orange blossom in the top note is already overwhelmingly complex - it's sweet, and heady, and a touch soapy at times. it's not too far apart from the scent of jasmine, if that's more familiar, to get an idea of the sort of animalic, almost musky sweetness of orange blossom. a cassis top note is also super interesting - it's shades of musk (again) and tonka, which is sort of a blend of vanilla and nutty almond, but mossier and less intense. lily is also pretty solid, but waxy and spicy, a little soapy like orange blossom with a hint of honey. it's very common in feminine scents, often a mid or incredibly strong top note.
in the mid notes, rose and blackberry add delicacy and bite respectively, offsetting the incredibly powerful, heady top notes. peony complements rose well, commonly featuring alongside it in perfumes. and the musk-amber-cedarwood base note combo... amber and musk is classic dark sensuality.
if i had to guess, the orange blossom-cassis-blackberry-rose combo probably makes this a pretty fruity, pink-red scent with a heady undertone provided by the powerful base notes (aka delicious <3)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
yunho:
like i said in hongjoong's, if mint is a top note, it immediately becomes the most dominant scent in the whole thing - with a few exceptions. eucalyptus is one of those exceptions, and so is mandarin. eucalyptus has a herby, waxy, lemony sort of smell to it to me, and this, combined with the mandarin orange, contributes a very citrusy top note. mandarin orange is usually particularly potent, so i wouldn't be surprised if this was very heavily orangey at first smell.
ylang-ylang is another heady, sweet, almost custard-like, honeyed smell that pairs well with the lemony green of geranium, which in turn has a floral aside that blends nicely with lavender. rosemary is a note that tends to add depth to perfumes and scented oils due to its woody spiciness, cleaning up the syrup of ylang-ylang and reinforcing the tangy top notes.
anise is warm, smoky-sweet, and a touch liquorice-y. it pairs well with musk, which is another warm, very earthy, heavily animalic scent - masculine and strong, providing a strong and lingering foundation.
overall, this scent profile is veeeeery clean. professional. it has a light, herby, citrusy brightness that hides a spicy animal musk, fresh bite that gives way to a warm and heady animalism.
yeosang:
interestingly, other than wooyoung's, yeosang's is the most overtly masculine scent. thyme, cardamom, oakmoss, vetiver - these are all very masculine notes.
thyme, pink pepper, and cardamom create a warm, spicy, almost leathery (thanks to the thyme) top note. cypress pairs well with these, offering a freshness and elegance that complements the spiciness well.
the lavender and geranium middle notes complement one another well - they're typically associated with calm and soothing, but with a kick provided by the geranium, which is a blend of herb, citrus, and fruity floral. a lot of people see it as similar to rose in terms of scent, but with an extra lemony, herby twist that balances it out and masculinises it in comparison.
oakmoss is... well it's mossy. it's an earthy scent that carries notes of musk and amber, and acts well to both prolong and fix scents and also balance out spicier, sharper notes, lending itself to sophistication and refinement. this blends well with the lemony-green olibanum.
vetiver is another earthy, woody scent that is very popular in masculine perfumes / colognes and very associated with masculinity in scent, though it can show up in unisex scents to provide an extra robustness. the undertones of leather and smoke in vetiver are what separates it from other common woody/earthy scents and what also makes it go well with cedarwood, which has a hint of natural smokiness. think bikers and a hint of cigarettes for vetiver.
tl;dr: HEAVILY masculine, musky smell for yeosang, with touches of wood, spice, and smoke that give it an extra warmth and bite, and a greenness from the oakmoss that refines it and adds sophistication and freshness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
san:
the only vanilla accord!! very similar to seonghwa's in terms of accords, but swapping amber for vanilla sweetens and softens the overall profile.
SUPER fruity scent. pear, peach, and ambrette seed in the top notes all have super fruity scents, with ambrette seed also containing notes of pear in it. the top note profile is full and sweet, with an extra apricot-y woodiness from the ambrette seed. very yummy. rose and jasmine in the middle notes add to the sweetness further, with rose providing the same floral delicacy as in seonghwa's and jasmine adding a sort of heady sweetness similar to the orange blossom also in seonghwa's. cedarwood deepens the woodiness first scented in the ambrette seed, adding a warmth and a spice to deepen the profile.
cashmere wood is getting its own bullet point because :( it's one of my favourite notes in perfumes / scented oils. one of my favourite cashmere wood descriptions is one i saw a while ago that said it smells like warm, bronze, sunkissed skin in summer :( if that doesn't make you think of san i don't know what will!! it's often got touches of vanilla in it, which blends nicely into the vanilla and cacao in the base notes.
musk and amber provides much-needed solid sensuality to an otherwise incredibly sweet, fresh, fruit-heavy scent. overall, this is probably one of the strongest scents - romantic, fun, flirty, pink, sunny, and very lovely. sannie :( <3
mingi:
mingi's is pretty interesting. everyone else has either musk or a wood in their base notes, but mingi has neither. this scent overall is herby, a touch floral, a little lemony - warm in a green way, bright and fresh.
bergamot offers a scent of sweet orange with a touch of warm spice. cardamom will reinforce the warmth and spice, and complement the citrusy bergamot by balancing the sweet with a bit of extra zest… it lends itself to a hint of inviting intoxication. this one will smell suuuuuper nice imo. the clary sage might be the most solid animalistic scent in this profile, and even that’s offset by the sleepy sweet powder scent of lavender.
the geranium - as mentioned above in yeosang's, it's a blend of herb, citrus, and fruity floral - and powdery, light, clean white musk contribute to the airiness of this oil.
looking at the others’ oils, 5/8 of them have musk (not white musk (which hongjoong and mingi have), musk) as one of their base notes, and 7/8 of them have either musk or a wood in their base notes - mingi is the only one with neither! musk and woods usually provide that sort of robustness, depth, and warmth to a scent, and mingi's, lacking both, is probably very light, fresh, and airy in comparison to the others, focusing more on its mid and top notes to create the primary scent.
overall a really fresh, light scent - not heavy or robust in the way the others are. refreshing and soothing sounds really right :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
wooyoung:
cardamom, woods, musk, and amber all the way down make for a very solid, masculine scent. it's warm and incredibly woody, with a hint of spice through the top notes that offsets the headiness of the base notes.
the base notes are very heady. musk and amber show up in a few of the others' base notes too, and vetiver also shows up in yeosang's, so i've covered these already - vetiver in particular lends itself to a classically masculine scent. veeeeerrryyyy masculine base notes overall.
if i had to guess, considering the vetiver base note and the fact that sandalwood and cedarwood are mid notes and not base notes, this is probably a veeeeery woody-smelling oil. just natural, earthy, woody, masculine goodness <3
jongho:
lemon, bergamot, and lime top notes offer an immediate, sharp, citrusy goodness.
i'm not sure if orange flower is any different to orange blossom - it could be more akin to neroli, which is similar to orange blossom but less warm, and a touch bitterer. either way, jasmine, lilac, and leafy green notes offer a freshness and natural sweet, rather than something more artificial and sugary, that complements the citrusy top notes well - particularly lilac, which i've found often has an initial scent of citrus itself.
balsamic base notes... 😋 i'm not sure which one specifically this is referring to, or if it's a general mix, but balsamic scents are usually rich-sweet-tangy, with a woody, almost damp sort of smell to it. very thick, very heady, probably also very welcome after all that citrus at the top. it's still a predominantly citrusy oil overall, but the balsamic notes at the base offer a woody offset that tempers it just a little.

“The Den of Mischief”
(Bucky x Reader)
Tumblr media
Avengers Compound, early evening
There was no warning. No mission briefing. No alarms. Just the quiet creak of the compound’s hallway floor as Bucky Barnes returned from a run, towel slung around his neck, earbuds still in.
He opened the door to his room and froze.
Blankets—layers of them—were stacked like a dragon’s hoard across his bed. His socks (mismatched, definitely stolen), several pillows that weren’t his, a tin of mints from Steve’s locker, and what looked suspiciously like one of Tony’s holographic projectors were buried within the chaos. At the very top of this domestic fortress, nestled like a smug deity, was you.
You. A known menace. Mischief in the form of a nine-tailed fox in human skin.
Curled up in the center of his bed like you owned it, your nine silver-white tails stretched out in every direction, twitching lightly in sleep. One tail was wrapped protectively around something shiny. Another dangled over the edge of the bed like a banner of victory.
Bucky leaned against the doorframe, slowly removing his earbuds.
You stirred.
One eye opened lazily, gold and gleaming.
Then you grinned.
“Explain. Now,” Bucky said, voice as flat as the vibranium arm crossed over his chest.
“I was cold,” you said with a sleepy purr, stretching luxuriously like a cat who knew they wouldn’t be kicked out. “And you smell like safety.”
Bucky blinked. “Don’t ever say that again.”
You just chuckled, shifting to prop your chin on one hand, your tails curling slightly in amusement.
“But it’s true,” you said, yawning. “It’s either you or Rogers. And he wears that lemony shampoo. I hate lemon.”
“That’s not an excuse to break into my room and—what the hell—build a fox den?!”
“It’s not a den,” you corrected, insulted. “It’s a nest. Dens are for foxes. I’m far more evolved.”
“You stole my socks.”
“I didn’t steal. I borrowed.”
Pause.
“…For nesting purposes.”
He stared at you. You stared right back, unbothered. Another tail flicked. Your ear twitched.
“This isn’t normal behavior.”
“I’m literally a mythological being.”
He muttered something under his breath and stepped inside, surveying the mess with grim horror. You were very proud of it, especially the string of fairy lights you’d tangled around the headboard.
Bucky tried to tug his pillow from under your arm.
You growled softly.
“Touch it and I bite.”
“That’s my pillow.”
“I drooled on it. It’s mine now.”
“You’re unbelievable.”
“Charming, I think is the word.”
He gave up, retreating to the armchair by the window with a groan, pinching the bridge of his nose like it physically pained him to be dealing with this. He’d seen intergalactic invasions, killer androids, and Hulk in full rage mode. But this? You? Nesting in his bed like a smug supernatural squirrel?
This was worse.
“Are you going to sleep there?” he asked finally.
“I’m already sleeping here.”
“You can’t just claim my room.”
You cracked both eyes open and looked at him properly now, cocking your head.
“But why would I sleep in my room,” you said slowly, “when yours smells like gunpowder, old leather, and safety?”
“Stop saying that,” he grumbled, looking away—because your voice dropped just slightly on that last word, and he hated the way it made his chest tighten.
He could feel your smile grow wider even without looking.
“You’re blushing,” you whispered.
“Am not.”
“Your ears are pink.”
He grabbed the remote and turned on the TV louder than necessary.
“Do you want the left side or right side?” you asked sweetly, already making room.
“I’m not sleeping in the bed.”
“But it’s warm,” you sing-songed. “And soft. And I only bit people twice last week. I’m practically housebroken.”
He shot you a withering look, then sighed so deeply it sounded like his soul left his body.
“If you’re staying,” he muttered, “you’re doing laundry tomorrow.”
You gasped. “Absolutely not. I’m divine.”
“You’re a raccoon in a crop top.”
You gasped louder. “How dare you—!”
“Lights out in 10,” he interrupted, tossing a pillow at you with far more force than necessary.
You caught it with a grin, curled deeper into your nest of pilfered things, and pulled the blanket up to your chin. Nine tails swirled and settled.
In the silence that followed, Bucky dared a glance at you.
You weren’t just sleeping.
You looked… content.
And despite himself—despite knowing he was absolutely enabling a monster—he couldn’t help the tiny upward quirk of his lips.
Because somehow, somewhere between wars and missions, the menace of the compound had built a nest in his room.
And part of him didn’t mind it.
Not at all.

Lemony Snicket on the back of every book: Hey, these books are like really sad. Maybe don't read them.
Me, a depressed, neurodivergent, definitely not-straight even if I don't realize it yet child: And yet, I have never felt more comforted in my life. I would like to visit my good friends The Baudelaires, please.

Four-day WIP Weekend
(Yes, another one. From Saturday to Tuesday. June is awash with public holidays, I don't make the rules.)
Weekly WIP Update
The cat is out of the sack! My @steddiebbang fic 2025 is Kiss the Cook, a fun, filthy, modern AU in which chef Steve doms Eddie into healther eating habits. She's gonna have seven chapters, and I'm currently working on the third.
Speaking of filth, those pirates are going at it like rabbits. This one should be good to post some time this month!
Still waiting for the next Steddie Bingo prompts, so I'm once again throwing boxer Steve and rock star Eddie into the ring as a third option for this week.
Send me an emoji, and I'll write and share three sentences from that project.

Eddie, who has definitely not spent the entirety of last night lying awake looking at thesaurus pages on his phone, grins. “Well, what can I say, I’m a quick learner.”
“I’m sure you are,” says Steve, and his smile turns sharp. Eddie quickly takes another fork full of pasta. “Do you know what’s so special about asparagus?”
“Hm?” Eddie makes around a mouthful of sauce. Damn, the lemony flavor is good! “That it makes your piss stink?”
Steve flicks the tip of his nose with one long finger.
Steve, who was just about to take his own first bite, snorts and almost drops his fork. “What? No! I mean yeah, but that’s not what-”
“Oooh,” Eddie gasps, leaning closer into his space across the table. “You mean that it looks like little dicks.”
“You are a little dick,” he scoffs, then averts his eyes and clears his throat, weirdly bashful - all while Eddie is still gaping at him, trying to process what just happens. His nose is tingling. “No, um. What I meant was that-”
The door jingles.
