They became the signals, do you understand. They became the sailors. Alex, Jonas, Clarissa, Ren, Nona, they were the USS Kanaloa. They were the trapped, lost souls who were so desperate to get out. They were the ones preying on the traumatized and vulnerable, knowing how to convince Olivia away because it happened to them, too. Their only difference from the sailors is that they tried to be ‘nicer’ about it, that Alex was able to drop everything before it went too far, but even then...
All of it, every last piece, is a cycle. Of time, of trauma, of generations, of death. Leave is not possible on any of these fronts, because it is impossible to leave when claws sink in so deep that you run right back to the beginning, and only at the end, looking back, do you realize what you broke as you fought to go home. Becoming what hurt you, because you knew no other way to survive.
They’re kids. They’re scared, lost kids, who didn’t know what else to do. So they acted on what they hoped would work, and they’d think about those consequences when they were finally safe. The sailors almost had them, so they will follow suit, but they’ll do it right, and then they’ll be okay. It’ll all be okay, won’t it?
They wanted to live. But so did the sailors.
And so, once more, we return to the beginning.

max's best drive ever?
Not just Max's, but 1 of the best drives in the history of the sport, definitely 1 of the finest ever driven on the intermediate tire. The way he made those tires perform on a wet resurfaced track where theres no mercy found in the white line, no rubber to build on, no drs, no easy overtake, just better cornering, that natural ability to take turns as if the racing line was drawn in front of him that is so his and so so devastating. People watch Austria and Mexico and c recklessness where theres only strength, control and complete lack of fear. In races like todays tho, u get to admire those same hands command the same respect without any room for doubt that he knows, in fact, what hes doing. Any advantage the machines may provide will dwindle and nearly dissipate because in conditions like todays it truly comes down to who knows better. And Max knew better from the moment the lights turned green. I think six cars before the main straight, dispatched, turned to nothing. When conditions worsened and race control began to play wid outcomes he not only endured, he thrived. While others began to pit he trusted himself to stay out, and he wasnt the only one but he was the 1 who did it best. 8 years ago, Max went and found grip everywhere else, and today, in the same circuit, where there was literally no grip to be found, he simply found the better line. He read the race like his favorite book while others could barely color within the shapes. It was somewhat insane to watch tbh, that disparity between racers, not only found in overtakes like on Oscar and Esteban, so crucial and so similar in the way he just knew how to position the car to catch them completely off guard, but also like, the pace alone, the relentless onslaught of perfect lap after perfect lap, 9 consecutive I think, 17 in total. This was a drive that nearly eclipsed 2023, first shades of last year without Newey in the pit wall, in a car that did so badly in Mexico it was getting outpaced by an Haas in its strongest tire. He didnt just come out from p17, he came out of a 20 second penalty, a 5 second penalty during a delayed VSC, an hammer to his quali chances for a late red flag, community service for swearing, shameless questioning of his driving, his wheel, his credibility as a champion, not just his racing but his character, too. I think its the context of all that that rlly makes the best drive of his career so far, because this was his best possible answer, and the only one that matters. p17 to p1 wid a 20 second lead. Some will reminisce about Senna, some will notice that early corner entry and admit Schumacher himself wud have struggled even a few times, the other legend on track whos as good in the wet didnt have the setup nor the confidence to show it, but I think today was a result only Max Verstappen cud have accomplished

What do you think of the headcanon (I have no idea where I saw it first but it isn’t mine) that despise his arranging attitude in cars 1 Lightning is the only Piston cup racer who hasn’t done anything problematic enough to be cancelled (yet)
honestly, i think its impossible
first, cancellation isnt really a thing in nascar unless a driver did something like. a literal crime. but rather, every driver has haters, and every driver makes mistakes
race fans tend to find a lot of things problematic, they even like to add it onto their pile of reasons to hate a driver even if its the tiniest of things — so, in this case, lightning most definitely has some haters and “problematic behaviours”. even cal and bobby would have their moments
i’ll use an example from real life and say that being the most popular driver (which is probably extremely easy to achieve for lightning every awards season) definitely has gained him some people who’d like to see him crash head on into a wall (if you see the way every chase elliott hater treats him, you’ll understand what i mean)
but, also, lightning has anger issues. anger issues and racecars dont typically mix well, without a doubt lightning has acted on his angry impulses and retaliated against another driver for something irritating. this would gain him either a suspension or a penalty (most likely a suspension for a few races), and a brand new group of people who hate his guts. it’d be used as something problematic because safety, sportsmanship, and emotional maturity is something that a lot of race fans look for.
all of these things added up would probably make lightning a controversial — has a lot of fans, but a fair amount of haters who are quite passionate about it — driver for most.
his attitude in cars 1 before the tie breaker race probably made him have less fans, maybe a few stuck along for the ride just because they would be able brag about cheering for the 18 year old rookie who wouldve ended up being the youngest driver to ever win a piston cup, but for the most part some of those fans had to be grasping at straws to defend his honour and their own. however, at the tie breaker race (this is where sportsmanship and emotional maturity come in) his act with strip weathers would have gained him way more fans — a lot of them coming from strip to cheer for lightning after the king retires. also, having a historically famous piston cup driver as your crew chief most definitely gained him even more traction and affection.
maybe his next season his anger issues begin dying out with care, and those knee-jerk reactions stop becoming as common, but its just human nature to be angry with people you think are stupid, so hes not all innocent.
anyways, he still definitely doesnt have a clean driving slate. no driver does, to be fair, they’ll always be hated for something or other - but i feel lightning is still on the less hated and problematic side (along with both cal and bobby — those two are relatively tame compared to him, they may be even less hated than he is)

Trans Preparedness
I'm probably not the right kind of blog to be doing this, but I go a little crazy not having a plan. A friend set up a threat model and practical steps that can be made to prepare for it. If this kind of disaster preparedness might be too much for you do not force yourself to read through this. Keeping calm and healthy is paramount above all of this.
Legal documents
Ban on legal document changes, reversion of previous changes and invalidation of updated documents. This means potentially being outed any time you present your ID. If you do update your documents, this may make it impossible to cross the border and any other checkpoints (legal or extralegal), as your documents could be invalidated. Possible criminal fraud penalty, like in florida, making the continued use of an invalidated ID risky. Risk of revocation of all legal recognition of non-binary gender.
What you can do to prepare: Consider whether it would be best to have your legal documents match your true gender or your agab. If you can’t reliably pass as your true gender, it may be prudent to have your documents reflect your agab, in the event you need to go through a document checkpoint without arousing suspicion. Also, consider that, by changing your documents, you may end up “on a list”.
Anti-trans discrimination
Rollback of anti-discrimination protections in employment, healthcare, and harassment/hate crimes.
What you can do to prepare: If you work at a corporation/franchise/small business with republican ownership or coworkers, consider updating your résumé and looking for new employment. If you do land a new job, think carefully about whether to present as your true gender or your agab while at work. Be extra cautious about coming out at your job — only do so if you can’t reliably pass as either your true gender or your agab.
If possible, save money. Pick up extra shifts. Cut back on discretionary purchases. Cancel unnecessary subscriptions. Meal prep. Organize bulk purchases with your community to share costs and get better prices. Visit your local food pantry instead of the grocery store. Etc.
One possible safeguard against healthcare discrimination is to have your medical records updated to reflect a diagnosis of intersex, rather than transgender, if possible. I’m not privy to the details, but my understanding is that there are certain diagnostic codes, genetic tests, etc that can be used to mask your transgender status while maintaining access to the same treatments.
Healthcare restrictions
Introduction of insurmountable liability for healthcare providers and expansion of malpractice definition/enforcement to make providing trans healthcare impossible. Possible criminalization of doctors prescribing HRT. Possible criminalization of HRT possession/use. It will become impossible to access HRT, except through DIY. Possible discrepancies in enforcement between states, with red states imposing “bounty hunter laws” that allow anyone to sue a person who has taken HRT.
What you can do to prepare: If you have a legal prescription for your HRT, ask your provider for a 90-day prescription. Fill it as soon as possible, and refill it once before inauguration day. Consider rationing to extend your supply.
Start thinking about what you’ll do when your stockpile runs out. Look into DIY method of HRT. Plan how you can share the cost of supplies among your community to build a larger stockpile.
Bathroom bans
National bathroom ban with possible deputized citizenry/tiplines. Could be fines or criminal penalties (jail). Either way, this makes it near impossible to go out in public, even in blue areas, because all it takes is one transphobe to turn your life upside down. This applies whether you’re in the restroom for your true gender or your agab, since we can’t count on transphobes to be consistent with enforcement (i.e. you look visibly queer so someone calls the cops on you, even though you’re in the restroom of your agab).
What you can do to prepare: Consult the Refuge Bathrooms directory to find single-occupant restrooms near you. Also submit any single-occupant restrooms you come across to the Refuge Bathrooms directory to help out others in the future. If you need to go into a gender-segregated multi-occupant restroom, try to go with a buddy or in a group for safety. Choose which restroom to use based on your outward appearance, not your internal gender.
Drag bans
May define transgender people doing any form of performance as drag, including public speaking at an event or protest, or performing live music in a venue or on the street. Possible definition of transgender people merely existing as “sexually explicit drag” in many circumstances. Possible classification of transgender people as sex offenders under this premise. May bar trans people under threat of criminal penalty from entering government buildings, airports, and schools while dressed in accordance with their gender.
What you can do to prepare: If you’re comfortable and capable of doing so, work on “passing“ as your true gender through voice training, clothing choices, hair style, and makeup. If you can’t reliably pass as your true gender, consider wearing less attention-grabbing, looser-fit, gender-neutral clothing and finding other ways to express your gender. Even if you’re wearing more body-conforming clothes, consider carrying a baggy sweatshirt or jacket to conceal your secondary sex characteristics in an emergency. Consider assembling a set of clothes associated with your agab, as well as any accessories such as a binder or packer, in case you need to “stealth” as your agab.
Additional notes
Update your passport, ID, and vaccinations. Drink water. Hug your friends. We get through this together.

"tHeRe aRe nO ScIeNtIfIc iNaCcUrAcY In qUrAn!!"
https://quranx.com/25.45-46
Hast thou not turned thy vision to thy Lord?- How He doth prolong the shadow! If He willed, He could make it stationary! then do We make the sun its guide;
Then We draw it in towards Ourselves,- a contraction by easy stages.
Allah makes the shadows change length by moving the sun. He could stop it moving any time he wanted.
https://quranx.com/37.6-10
We have indeed decked the lower heaven with beauty (in) the stars,-
(For beauty) and for guard against all obstinate rebellious evil spirits,
(So) they should not strain their ears in the direction of the Exalted Assembly but be cast away from every side,
Repulsed, for they are under a perpetual penalty,
Except such as snatch away something by stealth, and they are pursued by a flaming fire, of piercing brightness.
The stars are set into the underside of the layers of heaven, and are missiles to be fired at demons.
https://quranx.com/25.61
Blessed is He Who made constellations in the skies, and placed therein a Lamp and a Moon giving light;
The moon gives off light, rather than reflecting it.
https://quranx.com/15.26
And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud.
https://quranx.com/55.14
He created man from clay like [that of] pottery.
The first human (Adam) was made from clay.
https://quranx.com/86.6-7
He is created from a drop emitted-
Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs:
Sperm comes from "between the backbone and the ribs," and humans are created from it, with no involvement or mention of the egg.
https://quranx.com/23.14
Then We made the sperm into a clot of congealed blood; then of that clot We made a (foetus) lump; then we made out of that lump bones and clothed the bones with flesh; then we developed out of it another creature. So blessed be Allah, the best to create!
Bones grow first, then flesh onto it.
https://quranx.com/71.19
"'And Allah has made the earth for you as a carpet (spread out),
https://quranx.com/2.22
Who has made the earth your couch, and the heavens your canopy; and sent down rain from the heavens; and brought forth therewith Fruits for your sustenance; then set not up rivals unto Allah when ye know (the truth).
https://quranx.com/20.53
[It is He] who has made for you the earth as a bed [spread out] and inserted therein for you roadways and sent down from the sky, rain and produced thereby categories of various plants.
The Earth is a carpet, a couch, a bed. i.e. flat.
https://quranx.com/16.15
And He has set up on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you; and rivers and roads; that ye may guide yourselves;
The mountains hold the Earth still.
The usual excuse is that it's either a "translation problem," in which case we can't trust anything the quran says in English, or that it's a metaphor. Science is specific and precise. Metaphors are, by definition, unscientific.
Sometimes the excuse is one then the other, without the person realizing how stupid they sound.

OKAY. I finally managed to carve down an actually simplified version of the offline pocket edition I made for the excellent RPGSolo system. I definitely have more things in mind to expand on as options for players who want them, and this draft is Rough and near entirely unedited because I pounded it out in like half an hour during a migraine, oops, BUT! It should be fully functional as it is currently, and I hope people enjoy it as much as I have been.
(Also, if you like it I encourage you to go give the creator of the original site some support! This wouldn't exist without his work, and there's all kinds of neat extra tools and in-depth explanations to be found there and on the forums. Go check it out!)
-----
-
To play, you will need a d100 (percentile dice), a d10, and a Likelihood table. One is provided below, but you may substitute your own percentages if you want to tweak your chances.
• A way to record the events of your game and/or to keep track of bonuses and penalties is recommended, but not required.
RPGSolo runs on the Yes, And/No, But system.
• Yes, and...: Not only is the outcome successful, but it's better than you expected; you are even better off than you would have been from achieving what you meant to do. Situations you are observing turn out to have some extra good news involved, or you gain even more thorough insight than you were looking for at first.
• Yes: You achieve your goal.
• Yes, but...: You achieve your goal, but there's a hitch or it comes at a cost.
• No, but: You fail your goal, but not completely. If you are making an observation, the situation isn't great, but there's a silver lining.
• No: You fail your goal.
• No, and...: Not only is the outcome a failure, but it's even worse than you thought, and/or you're worse off than if you had left it alone.
The Likelihood of a given roll dictates how likely you are to receive one of the above six outcomes. Each Likelihood lists the corresponding results on a scale from 1 to 100.
• No matter the Likelihood you are rolling from, there will always be a chance no matter how small to roll each outcome. Almost Impossible has a tiny chance to roll 'Yes, and...' and Sure Thing has a tiny chance to roll 'No, and...'
Optionally: you may add modifiers to increase or decrease your chances in a given scenario. Your character might be a trained fighter; they might have a sprained ankle; they might have found a flashlight; they may have a bad reputation in town which makes interactions with the townsfolk more hostile.
• Each point on a modifier counts for +1 or -1 Likelihood. A +1 turns a 50/50 into a Somewhat Likely, a -3 turns a Likely into a Somewhat Unlikely, and so on.
• Some modifiers make a bigger difference than others. A friendly demeanor might add a +1 bonus to checks involving interactions with the surly townsfolk, where that sprained ankle might be a -3 penalty to attempts to move quickly.
• Optionally: you may also add modifiers to change the outcome of a roll, not the Likelihood; a 'No, but...' becomes a 'Yes, but...' for example. These have a much stronger influence on your game, and you may want to use them sparingly.
• You may assign modifiers to your player characters--or other characters, or locations, or anything else--ahead of time, or you may add or remove modifiers during play as you feel they are appropriate.
At the beginning of each turn, decide what action you want to take, what observations you want to make, or what happens in the world around you.
Roll 1d10 to determine the difficulty of an action.
• 1: Almost Impossible
• 2: Very Unlikely
• 3: Unlikely
• 4: Somewhat Unlikely
• 5: 50/50
• 6: Somewhat Likely
• 7: Likely
• 8: Very Likely
• 9: Sure Thing
• 10: Reroll with +1 bonus (or just reroll, if you'd rather)
Add any appropriate modifiers to determine the Likelihood of the roll.
If you check the Likelihood of a roll and don't like your chances, you can choose not to pursue it.
• If there are any rolls you might want to come back to and try again later, you may want to make a note of it on the side. You might decide to leave a door with an alarm alone until you can find some tools to disarm it with, for example.
If you decide to proceed, roll 1d100 and consult the appropriate Likelihood table.
Add any appropriate outcome modifiers to determine the result.
Decide how to interpret the result.
• In case of wording you're not sure of ('do the guards notice me?' for example), a lower outcome is generally negative. You may want to write out the translated result next to the 'yes, and/no, but' result, for the sake of clarity.
• If you're rolling to decide between multiple options instead of for negative/positive outcomes, you may use your d10 as a yes/no oracle, or use 'yes, and/no, but' to roll for the degree to which the result falls between the presented options.
• Oracle between 2 options:
• 1-5: No/First option
• 6-10: Yes/Second option
• Oracle between 3 options:
• 1-3: No/First Option
• 4-6: Neither/Both/In-Between/Second option
• 7-9: Yes/Third option
• 10: Reroll, or secret fourth option
If you want to make more than one roll to determine what's going on before you continue the narrative, feel free to make as many in a row as you want before you describe what happens.
Optionally: you can use a Do-Over to redo a roll, or directly choose your outcome, if you really don't want to continue with what you got.
• It's recommended that you limit the number of these you have access to, if you want to keep some challenge in your game (5 Do-Overs per scene, for example), but you don't have to. You can do it as many times as you want; it comes down to what's most fun for you.
Write out what happens as a result of the outcome you rolled, until you reach the next point where you want the dice to show you the way.
Happy roleplaying!

Long trip for North End in punishing schedule
North End make the longest trip of the season on Saturday when we take on Plymouth Argyle at Home Park, a round trip of over 600 miles for the Deepdale faithful. The game in Devon comes on the back of a decent week with North End taking four points from the two home games against Coventry and Norwich at the start of an intense seven game run in twenty two days. After the trip to Plymouth on Saturday we welcome Arsenal to Deepdale next Wednesday evening in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup as we look to cause a major upset in the competition and get to the quarter final stage for the first time in our illustrious history.
Last Saturday North End claimed all three points from Mark Robins Coventry City, with a 1-0 win, courtesy of an Emil Riis header twenty minutes from the end in what turned out to be a quite tight affair. North End shaded the chances in the game and shaded the play but if it had not been for Freddie Woodman diving to his left in the dying seconds of the match it could have have easily finished with the spoils shared. North End seem to have the jynx over the Sky Blues at Deepdale and I think this was the twenty second league game that Coventry have come to Deepdale without going away with a win. A truly incredible record.
On Tuesday evening Norwich City were the visitors to Deepdale and I thought the Canaries were the best side we have seen at Preston in the league this season. North End started the game like a house on fire and were two goals up inside twelve minutes from a Sam Greenwood penalty and a well constucted goal from Duane Holmes. North End put a massive amount of energy into the first quarter of the game and could not quite hold out until half time before the visitors pulled one back. When Duffy equalised after an hour it was very nip and tuck but North End finished the better and were well deserving of a point from an entertaining game under the Deepdale lights.
On Saturday we travel to Plymouth to take on Wayne Rooneys team who lie two points and five places below North End in 21st position in the Championship. Having said that the Pilgims have won three and drawn one of their five home games this season scoring nine goals and only conceding six. North Ends last waay win in the Championship came at Home Park way back in March when a Liam Millar shot from the right hand side was the difference between the two teams. It wont be an easy game for North End, none in the Championship are, but I think we are playing well enough to win this game and make it a very good week with seven points out of nine for Hecky`s charges.
On Wednesday evening we welcome Arsenal to Deepdale for our 4th Round Carabao Cup tie in what promises to be a grand occasion for those inside Deepdale. I, personally, am very disappointed with ticket sales to date leading up to the game but there are many reasons why this should be the case. It is, of course, a free hit for North End and although there will be speculation on how strong a team Arsenal will put out but you can bet your life that there will still be plenty of stars on show and the least we can do is give Hecky and the boys a full house to run out to. So if you havent made up your mind whether to go or not to go, get yourself down to Deepdale as you may well see a bit of history being made.
And finally this week:- I had a long discussion the other day on whether VAR would be an improvement if introduced into the Championship. I am definitely in the No camp on this one as Ive seen too many decisions go in favour of the so called big teams in the Premier League. On that basis alone ...it`s a NO from me!

Learn How to Register a Trailer in California
Tumblr media
by Koushik Paul Our guide simplifies California trailer registration. Understand legal requirements, handle paperwork, and ensure compliance with ease..... Introduction Definition of a Trailer When we speak of a trailer, we're referring to that unpowered vehicle typically towed by your powered vehicle. It comes in various shapes and sizes, from the humble utility trailers for garden waste to the grand travel trailers for those who love the open road. The common thread? They all need legal recognition to hit the highway alongside you. In This ArticleIntroductionDefinition of a Trailer Importance of Knowing How to Register a Trailer in California Steps to Registering Your Trailer in CaliforniaStep 1: Understand the RequirementsLegal Requirements Necessary documentation Key information needed Step 2: Gather Required DocumentsTitle or certificate of ownership Bill of sale Identification documents Step 3: Complete Application FormsOverview of the registration process Filling out the necessary forms Submitting your application Step 4: Pay Fees and TaxesRegistration fees Sales tax Penalties for late registration Step 5: Receive Your RegistrationWaiting period Receiving your registration documents Placing registration stickers on your trailer Tips for Successful Trailer RegistrationKeep copies of all documentation Contact local DMV for any questions Conclusion FAQsWhy is it important to register my trailer in California? What documents do I need to register my trailer in California? What are the penalties for late registration in California? How do I affix registration stickers to my trailer? Importance of Knowing How to Register a Trailer in California Knowing how to register a trailer in California properly is not merely a bureaucratic formality but a crucial step in ensuring peace of mind and legal compliance. Failure to obtain the necessary license plates and properly register your trailer according to the established regulations can result in hefty fines and penalties, adding unnecessary financial strain and legal complications. Moreover, proper registration affirms that your trailer meets the necessary safety and roadworthiness standards, minimizing the risk of accidents or legal liabilities. By completing the registration process correctly, you demonstrate a commitment to responsible ownership and ensure that your trailer is equipped to navigate the roads safely, without posing a threat to yourself or others. It's a safeguard against potential legal entanglements and ensures that you can enjoy your trailer adventures with confidence, knowing that you've taken the necessary steps to comply with the law and protect both your investment and your fellow road users. Steps to Registering Your Trailer in California Step 1: Understand the Requirements Legal Requirements In the Golden State, trailers are subject to specific legal standards. Whether for personal use or commercial hauls, the law requires registration through the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) (Source: California DMV) to ensure safety standards and proper use on public roads. For personal use, trailers must adhere to specific legal stipulations, such as size and weight restrictions, to maintain road safety standards. Additionally, trailers may need to meet emission standards if equipped with certain features, ensuring environmental compatibility while in operation. Compliance with these regulations not only upholds legal requirements but also promotes a safer driving environment for all motorists. In contrast, trailers intended for commercial use are subject to a more comprehensive set of legal obligations. Apart from registration, commercial trailers may require additional permits or licenses, depending on the nature of their operation. For instance, trailers transporting hazardous materials must comply with specialized regulations and obtain relevant permits to ensure the safe transport of such substances. Furthermore, commercial trailers often undergo regular inspections to verify compliance with safety standards and operational requirements, further emphasizing the importance of legal adherence in this sector. Beyond registration and operational standards, legal requirements for trailers in California extend to aspects such as insurance coverage and liability protection. Owners must ensure that their trailers are adequately insured to provide financial protection in the event of accidents or damage. Moreover, liability laws dictate the responsibilities of trailer owners in cases of accidents or property damage caused by their vehicles, emphasizing the need for comprehensive insurance coverage to mitigate potential risks. In summary, legal requirements for trailers in California encompass various aspects, including registration, compliance with safety standards, and insurance coverage. Adherence to these regulations is essential to ensure road safety, environmental responsibility, and legal compliance, whether for personal or commercial use..... Read More... Read the full article

As of the early hours of May 16, the Netherlands has been under a far-right coalition government led by the fascist Party for Freedom (PVV), already the largest party in the House of Representatives. The coalition includes the conservative People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the Christian-Democratic New Social Contract, and the right-populist Farmer-Citizen Movement.
...
The coalition agreement has 26 pages. The document is not very specific on many points, and after almost six months of negotiations one might ask what they have actually been talking about during this long period. However, when it comes to topics such as migration and refugees, the fascist and xenophobic character of this government becomes very clear.
...
These paragraphs deal with the possibility of placing the field of immigration law under a state of emergency, governed without parliament. They also open up the possibility of ignoring international treaties on immigration and asylum policies.
...
Importantly, with its planned migration crisis law, the government wants to put all asylum procedures on hold for at least two years.
...
Moreover, the coalition agreement states that the government wants to “adjust” EU treaties and regulations on migration and advocates “a modernisation of the UN Refugee Convention” of 1951 “and will seek cooperation with like-minded member states at the United Nations” to achieve this. Many may laugh at the fact that a small country like the Netherlands wants to launch this initiative against the UN, but what if the far-right wins the upcoming EU elections? What if Trump wins the US elections? Leaders like Meloni and Sunak would also probably support it.
...
As could be expected from a far-right government, the document also announces “a visible presence and more police and police stations in the districts, in the neighbourhoods, in the regions; the criminal investigation department will be strengthened”, and there will be harsher penalties for “deviant behaviour” – a term not described in detail. There is to be a clear distinction between peaceful demonstrators and people who jeopardise “public order”, with significantly harsher penalties. The definition of what a terrorist organisation is also to be expanded – again the document does not say exactly how.
...
The coalition agreement also states that public broadcasting in the Netherlands needs to be reformed, with a cut of 100 million Euros. Decision-making processes are to be streamlined. What this sentence exactly means is not described. And of course, climate denier Wilders is also taking aim at several carbon-cutting measures, with the promise to raise the daytime motorway speed limit back to 130 km/h and renewing the subsidy on “red diesel” for farmers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
just copying the header image here bc it's so cool :)
the main question today is but what if the far-right wins the upcoming EU elections?
fortunately there are several people's initiatives you can join to help the work against this possibility

youtube
What is a Sole Trader VAT Threshold?
Definition of a Sole Trader
A sole trader, also known as a sole proprietor, is an individual who runs a business on their own without any partners or shareholders. As a sole trader, you are self-employed and have full control over your business decisions and profits.
What is VAT?
VAT, which stands for Value Added Tax, is a consumption tax imposed on the value added to goods and services at each stage of production or distribution. It is applied in many countries, including the United Kingdom, and is an important source of government revenue.
Importance of VAT Threshold for Sole Traders
The VAT threshold is a crucial factor for sole traders as it determines whether they need to register for VAT and comply with VAT regulations. This threshold sets the minimum level of annual turnover at which a sole trader is required to register for VAT. Understanding the concept of VAT thresholds is essential for sole traders to effectively manage their VAT liability and legal obligations.
Understanding VAT Thresholds
Different VAT Thresholds
As of 2023, the standard VAT threshold in the UK is £85,000 of taxable turnover in a 12-month period. It is crucial to be aware of the specific threshold that applies to your business to ensure compliance with VAT regulations.
Exempt and Standard Rated Supplies
It is important to understand the distinction between exempt and standard-rated supplies when considering VAT thresholds. Some goods and services are exempt from VAT, meaning that no VAT is charged on their sale. On the other hand, standard-rated supplies are subject to VAT at the standard rate. The distinction between these supplies can impact whether your turnover exceeds the VAT threshold and requires registration.
Registration and De-Registration for VAT
If your taxable turnover exceeds the VAT threshold, you must register for VAT with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) within 30 days. Registering for VAT means you become a VAT-registered business and have additional responsibilities, such as charging VAT on your sales and submitting periodic VAT returns. It is important to keep track of your turnover and promptly register for VAT to avoid penalties. Conversely, if your turnover falls below the de-registration threshold, which is currently set at £83,000, you may choose to de-register for VAT.
Benefits of Registering for VAT as a Sole Trader
Claiming Input VAT
One of the significant benefits of registering for VAT as a sole trader is the ability to claim input VAT. Input VAT refers to the VAT you pay on goods and services purchased for your business. By registering for VAT, you can reclaim this input VAT, reducing your business expenses and potentially increasing your profits.
Professionalism and Credibility
Being VAT registered can enhance the professionalism and credibility of your business. It reassures your customers that you are a legitimate and trustworthy enterprise. Many businesses, especially larger ones, prefer to work with VAT-registered suppliers as it indicates the level of professionalism and reliability of the supplier. Therefore, registering for VAT can potentially open new business opportunities and relationships.
Eligibility for VAT Refunds
As a VAT-registered sole trader, you may be eligible for VAT refunds in certain circumstances. For example, if you have a higher rate of input VAT compared to your output VAT, you can claim a refund from HMRC. This can provide valuable cash flow benefits and help support the growth and development of your business.
Consequences of Exceeding the VAT Threshold
Compulsory VAT Registration
If your taxable turnover exceeds the VAT threshold, you are required by law to register for VAT and comply with VAT regulations. Failure to do so can result in penalties and fines imposed by HMRC. It is essential to monitor your turnover and promptly register for VAT to avoid any legal consequences.
Penalties and Fines
If you fail to register for VAT on time or submit inaccurate VAT returns, HMRC may levy penalties and fines. These penalties can range from a percentage of the VAT owed to fixed amounts, and they can quickly accumulate if non-compliance persists. It is crucial to stay on top of your VAT obligations to avoid unnecessary financial setbacks.
Increased Administrative Responsibilities
Registering for VAT introduces additional administrative responsibilities and obligations for sole traders. This includes charging VAT on eligible sales, maintaining proper VAT records, and submitting regular VAT returns to HMRC. It is important to allocate sufficient time and resources to ensure accurate and timely compliance with these obligations.
Calculating VAT Liability as a Sole Trader
VAT-Inclusive and VAT-Exclusive Pricing
As a sole trader, you need to understand the difference between VAT-inclusive and VAT-exclusive pricing. Most businesses in the UK quote prices inclusive of VAT, which means the final price displayed already includes the VAT amount. However, if you prefer to display prices excluding VAT, you must clearly indicate that VAT will be added at the appropriate rate. It is crucial to calculate your pricing accurately to ensure compliance with VAT regulations.
VAT Flat Rate Scheme
The VAT Flat Rate Scheme is an alternative method of calculating and paying VAT for certain businesses with a lower turnover. Under this scheme, you pay a fixed percentage of your gross turnover as VAT to HMRC, simplifying the calculations and potentially reducing your VAT liability. However, it is important to evaluate whether the VAT Flat Rate Scheme is suitable for your business before opting in.
VAT Payments and Deadlines
Registered sole traders must make regular VAT payments to HMRC based on their VAT returns. It is crucial to understand the VAT payment deadlines and ensure timely payments to avoid penalties. Late payments can result in interest charges and may draw the attention of HMRC to your business, potentially triggering investigation.
Managing VAT as a Sole Trader
Record-Keeping for VAT Purposes
Accurate record-keeping is essential for managing VAT obligations as a sole trader. You must keep all relevant VAT records, such as invoices, receipts, and VAT returns, for at least six years. Maintaining organized and up-to-date records enables you to easily complete your VAT returns, respond to any HMRC queries, and ensure compliance with VAT regulations.
VAT Returns and Documentation
As a VAT-registered sole trader, you are required to submit regular VAT returns to HMRC. These returns provide a summary of your sales, purchases, and VAT liability for a specific period, usually quarterly. Careful attention must be given to accurately complete the VAT return and submit it within the designated timeframe. Additionally, retaining copies of submitted VAT returns and supporting documentation is essential for future reference and any potential HMRC inquiries.
Engaging with HM Revenue & Customs
As a sole trader managing VAT, it is important to establish a positive and proactive relationship with HMRC. They provide guidance, support, and resources to help you comply with VAT regulations. Engaging with HMRC can help you clarify any uncertainties, seek advice on specific situations, and ensure that you are up to date with any changes in VAT legislation.
Considerations When Approaching the VAT Threshold
Timing of VAT Registration
Timing is crucial when it comes to VAT registration as a sole trader. While exceeding the VAT threshold requires immediate registration, strategically timing your registration can be beneficial. For instance, if you expect a temporary increase in turnover that will push you over the threshold, delaying the sale until the following period can help you avoid unnecessary administrative obligations and potential complications.
Factors Influencing VAT Liability
As a sole trader, various factors can influence your VAT liability. Changes in business activities, pricing strategies, or even economic conditions can all impact your turnover and VAT liability. Stay informed about these factors and regularly reassess your VAT position to ensure you remain compliant and properly manage your VAT obligations.
Consulting with an Accountant
Navigating the complexities of VAT regulations can be challenging as a sole trader. Therefore, it is highly recommended to seek professional advice from an accountant with expertise in VAT. An accountant can provide personalized guidance, help you manage your VAT liability, and ensure compliance with relevant VAT laws.
Common VAT Misconceptions for Sole Traders
Belief in Automatic Entry into VAT
One common misconception among sole traders is that they will automatically be registered for VAT once their turnover exceeds the threshold. In reality, it is the sole trader’s responsibility to register for VAT within the specified timeframe. Failing to register can have serious consequences, including penalties and fines.
Lack of Understanding of VAT Exemptions
VAT exemptions can be confusing for sole traders. It is crucial to have a clear understanding of which goods and services are exempt from VAT to avoid unnecessary complications and potential mistakes. Seeking professional advice or consulting HMRC guidance can help clarify any uncertainties regarding VAT exemptions.
Mismanagement of VAT Payments
Managing VAT payments can be challenging, especially for sole traders. It is essential to accurately calculate your VAT liability, ensure timely payments, and keep track of payment deadlines. Mismanagement of VAT payments can lead to penalties, fines, and potential cash flow issues for your business.
Conclusion
Understanding the sole trader VAT threshold is crucial for operating a successful and compliant business. By staying below the threshold, you can avoid mandatory VAT registration and its associated administrative responsibilities. However, if your turnover exceeds the threshold, timely registration is essential to avoid penalties. Taking advantage of the benefits of VAT registration, such as reclaiming input VAT and enhancing your professionalism, can help improve your business’s profitability and credibility. With proper planning, record-keeping, and engagement with tax authorities, you can effectively manage your VAT liability and ensure compliance with VAT regulations as a sole trader.

Financial Terms You Need to Know Before You Borrow Money Online
Tumblr media
While most modern financial institutions do their best to simplify the borrowing process, it can still be a little confusing. Your experience greatly hinges on your existing financial literacy. You need some idea of how online loans work when you first start researching your options. But more importantly, this knowledge needs to follow you to the final negotiations, when you read your loan contract for the last time before you agree to the terms. If you’re like most people, several terms stand out for the wrong reasons—you don’t know what they mean! Don’t sign a financial document and hope they don’t come up. Read this list of definitions first. It will provide a solid foundation of financial literacy as you search for online loans in the future. Principal No, this doesn’t refer to the head teachers who managed your old grade schools. Principal in a financial context refers to the amount you borrow. This is an important number to know, as it determines whether your loan provides enough funds to support your goals. Interest Rate Few lenders will only ever expect you to repay the principal on its own. Most apply interest, which is a percentage of your principal that compounds on a regular schedule, usually daily. Interest rates are considered a normal cost of borrowing. However, they may vary drastically from lender to lender, loan to loan, and borrower to borrower. The higher your interest is, the more your loan will cost at the end of the day. Annual Percentage Rate The annual percentage rate, shortened conveniently to APR, is an important shortcut in calculating the cost of borrowing. That’s because it factors in more than just the interest rate when determining the cost. It also includes other finance charges, such as administrative or origination fees. Truncating all your charges into one percentage makes it easier to compare multiple loans at a time. Amortization This mouthful of a word is related to your term, or the timing of your loan. It refers specifically to the time it will take you to repay your full cost of borrowing. For example, a payday cash advance only gives you until your next payday to do this. The average installment loan, on the other hand, has an amortization period of weeks, months, or even years. If your lender allows you to make additional or early payments, you can use this calculator to see how your extra payments affect what you owe. Secured vs Unsecured You can roughly chop personal loans into two distinct categories: one secured, the other unsecured. Secured financial products are backed by collateral, or a financial asset, that the lender may take as payment if you default. Unsecured financial products don’t require collateral, which means there’s more risk involved for lenders. As a result, you may notice unsecured loans are more expensive than secured alternatives. Grace Period Depending on the type of loan you take out, you might have a grace period. This is a set amount of time following your due date where your lender may accept payments without penalties. While each lender has unique rules, most grace periods last 30 days. After that, your lender may report your late payment to the credit bureaus. These Terms Get You Off to a Good Start While these form a core group of words you should understand inside and out, there may be more terms that cause some confusion. Before you sign your contract, always ask your lender to explain anything you don’t understand. This could help you avoid accepting financing you can’t afford. Read the full article

Splinterlands BATTLE MAGE SECRETS Featuring Keep Your Distance in a 14 round grind to a victory.
Tumblr media
Featuring Bronze League Summoner and Monsters in Action!
I'm excited to bring you a bronze League brawl match that showcases a three rule set Marathon match where I was able to eek out a victory. We're highlighting to keep your distance real set where no monsters with melee are allowed, and I think I did quite well.
Tumblr media
CHALLENGE RULES
RULESET: KEEP YOUR DISTANCE
Tumblr media
Description: Units with melee attacks may not be used.
Use Phase, Void, Void Armor, and Magic Reflect to counter magic attacks. Use Headwinds and Return Fire to counter ranged attacks. Units with 2 types of attack (which include melee) cannot be used.
Reasons Why I like it I think I find this one of the most difficult rules such to play with since so many monsters are mainly based. This all so means that the monsters that are chosen will be heavily arrow and magic focused without many counters or ability to attack from the first position. While magic is great sometimes it can be negated to the point of where you're not doing any damage, but if you go too much on arrows then you won't be able to attack from the first position. It can be a difficult situation to parents
The Matchup - Where Rules Sets, Splinters and Mana Collide
The Rule Sets
Tumblr media
Watch the Match Here
MANA: 19
Ruleset: Equalizer: All monsters start with the same health, based on the highest health in either team.
Ruleset: Keep Your Distance: Monsters with melee attacks may not be used.
Ruleset: Noxious Fumes: All monsters are afflicted with the poison debuff at the start of the game.
SPLINTERS: Fire, Water, Life, Death
Initial Rule Set and Mana Gameplay Thoughts
Rulesets That's a lot of rules such to consider. I think that they keep your distance will set will push my selection to eliminate fire as an option. Water and life also have a cleanse ability for me at bronze so they move up towards my selection ranking, while death will reduce the magic attacks by one or arrow attacked by one if so chosen. The biggest benefit I get is equalizer will make my small weak monsters have the same health and allow me to last long er.
Mana 19 minutes is extremely limited, especially considering the poison and the normal sets it will be difficult to balance out the team
Splinters Most expenses are available, and the ones I really want are. I will definitely be focusing on this has cleanse to keep my monsters healthy and poison free if possible
Summoner BORTUS Since this is a brawl and there's no penalty for lower cylinders I chose to play Bortus to counter any magic monsters
First Position SPIRIT HOARDER
While traditionally not a strong first position monster come up with equalizer it is now has as much health as anyone else and it can heal monsters that are poisoned, sniped, or splash damaged
Second Position FLAGULON REINE This is the monster I'm hoping to get on a roll, it will do some splash damage and attack the first monster and I'm hoping to get some knockouts
Third Position RIVER NYMPH This should cleanse the monsters in first which should either be Spirit hoarder and impossibly Flagoun Reine
Fourth Position MERDAALI GUARDIAN If I'm going to have one healer on a team I might as well have two. This should help all of my monsters survive as long as possible as I can heal Spirit order, who then heals the back row.
Tumblr media
Opponent Lineup & Match Play
Summoner BORTUS Great minds think alike and they went the same direction that I did
DJINN OSHANNUS Great choice, especially with Bortus since it's void will eliminate most of my magic attacks
MERDAALI GUARDIAN Solid choice to provide a healer in the game to keep Djinn Oshannus healthy and potentially when on poisen
RIVER NYMPH Very similar to my own lineup, if a cleanse to keep Djinn Oshannus healthy after the first round
CREEPING OOZE
And only available because it's a level one, and doesn't have melee. I'm not sure if the slow it hits will do much damage for me, and I might have put it in second place versus first.
Round 1
Tumblr media
Not sure how this is going to play out as it clearly is really even and no one's going to be doing much damage. As round one plays out not much damage is done on my part or their part. All the damage that was done to my side was healed, and the only damage I did with one splash damage to guardian.
Round 2
Tumblr media
Round two is where the poison starts to get applied and it immediately starts to drain everyone's health. As the round continues to play out I have noticed that Spirit hoarder does not take any damage that isn't healed by the end of the round, and it is going to heal my back row one by one throughout the match. Good news is my opponent is slowly starting to lose health from both splash and poison in the back row.
Round 3
Tumblr media
It's dawning on me now just how long this match could take. Good news is looks like I have plenty of healing to keep my monsters around bad news is I'm not doing anything damage to Djinn Oshannus and my only hope is to get a knockout Flagulon Reine
Round 4
Tumblr media
Round four plays out just like the other rounds except for I am very lucky to secure my first knockout and trigger a bloodlust on Flagulon Reine. This means I'll know we're doing damage to Djinn Oshannus and slowly bringing his health down
Round 5
Tumblr media
This is going to be a real marathon of a match at this point since all of the healers are doing the work on my side, while I only take one health away from Djinn Oshannus each round
Round 6
Tumblr media
Most of the damage done around 6:00 was actually done by poison to my opponent. This means no more bloodlust is available for me as a knockout, while we grind away at the health. It becomes apparent that Spirit order cannot heal the back real fast enough to keep them all around and pretty soon I will start to lose them
Round 7
Tumblr media
Not much happening here we'll move on to round 8
Round 8
Tumblr media
It dawned on me in round 8 that it was really important for me to put Flagulon Reine in second position as it is healed first in round 8 meaning it will survive the poison of round 9
Round 9
Tumblr media
After the poison we're down to two monsters for me, one monster for him. I do one damage per round, he'll do one damage per round. Good news is Spirit order will completely heal Flagoun Reine in a few rounds and I should secure victory. At this point it's just going to be a grind of a ground by round one damage to each team.
Round 10
Tumblr media
Fast forward
Round 11
Fast forward
Round 12
Tumblr media
Slowly getting there
Round 13
Tumblr media
The end is near
Round 14
Tumblr media
Finally victory is achieved and unable to pull off a real marathon of a grinding session. It took me a long time but it was a good victory overall. Having double healers with both triage and tank heel was imperative to my victory
Thoughts - and Chances to Win Again
Tumblr media
do love seeing a 100% chance to repeat victory, and I really think that I played as about perfectly. It could have gone differently if my opponent had picked lower health cards so none of us had a card worth and health so my healing had less of an impact. It's hard to know what other options they had but for the lineup they picked I picked the perfect counter

206AB Compliance Check Made Easy Expert Tips for Success
In the constantly evolving landscape of tax regulations, it's crucial for businesses to stay up-to-date with the latest changes to ensure compliance and avoid penalties. One such important aspect is 206AB Compliance check, which was introduced to ensure that certain taxpayers fulfill their tax obligations diligently. In this comprehensive guide, we'll walk you through everything you need to know about 206AB Compliance check, expert tips to achieve success, and how to stay ahead in the game.
Understanding Section 206AB
Section 206AB is an essential provision introduced in the Income Tax Act, targeting "specified persons" who are required to deduct tax at source (TDS). As per this section, if a specified person fails to furnish their Permanent Account Number (PAN) or Aadhaar number, they will be subject to a higher TDS rate, which will be twice the rate prescribed under the relevant provisions of the Income Tax Act or at the rate of 5%, whichever is higher.
Who are Specified Persons?
The definition of "specified persons" under Section 206AB encompasses individuals who meet specific conditions, making them subject to the provisions of this section. The following categories fall under this definition:
Non-Residents: Any person who is not a resident of India for tax purposes falls under this category.
Foreign Companies: Companies incorporated outside India or any other foreign entity are considered specified persons.
Businesses with Suspicious Transactions: Individuals or entities involved in transactions identified as suspicious by the tax authorities.
Non-Filers of Income Tax Returns: Those who have not filed their income tax returns for the past two assessment years and the tax amount exceeds a certain threshold.
Non-Compliant PAN/Aadhaar Holders: Individuals who have not linked their PAN or Aadhaar to their financial transactions as required.
Key Implications of 206AB Compliance check
Failing to adhere to the provisions of Section 206AB can lead to significant implications for specified persons. Some of the key points to consider are:
Higher TDS Deduction: The primary consequence of non-compliance is the higher TDS rate of 2 times or 5%, whichever is higher. This can result in increased tax deductions for specified persons.
Limited Tax Benefits: Non-residents and foreign companies may lose out on certain tax benefits, affecting their overall tax liability.
Increased Compliance Burden: Businesses with suspicious transactions or non-filers of income tax returns may come under increased scrutiny, leading to additional compliance requirements.
Expert Tips for 206AB Compliance check
Achieving 206AB Compliance check doesn't have to be a daunting task. By following these expert tips, you can ensure smooth compliance and minimize potential risks:
1. Ensure Updated Tax Records
Maintain accurate and up-to-date tax records, including PAN and Aadhaar details, for all relevant transactions. Regularly review and update the information to avoid discrepancies.
2. File Income Tax Returns Promptly
For individuals required to file income tax returns, ensure timely filing without any delays. This will help establish your compliance history and avoid falling under the non-filers category.
3. Perform Due Diligence on Transactions
For businesses involved in multiple transactions, it's essential to conduct due diligence and identify any suspicious transactions. Implement internal checks and balances to minimize the risk of non-compliance.
4. Seek Professional Guidance
Tax regulations can be complex, especially for non-residents and foreign entities. Seek the assistance of qualified tax professionals who specialize in international taxation to ensure accurate compliance.
5. Link PAN/Aadhaar with Financial Transactions
For individuals, linking your PAN or Aadhaar with financial transactions is crucial. This helps the tax authorities track your tax liabilities accurately and avoid higher TDS deductions.
6. Regularly Monitor Compliance Updates
Stay informed about any changes or updates in tax regulations, particularly related to 206AB Compliance check. Being proactive in adapting to new requirements will keep you compliant and avoid potential penalties.
How to Stay Ahead in 206AB Compliance check
As compliance norms continue to evolve, staying ahead is the key to success. Here are some strategies to keep your compliance practices up to date:
1. Continuous Education
Stay informed about the latest tax regulations, amendments, and updates through tax seminars, workshops, or reputable online resources. Being well-informed will help you adapt to changes effectively.
2. Implement Technology Solutions
Leverage technology to streamline your tax compliance processes. Automated systems can assist in record-keeping, reporting, and identifying potential compliance issues.
3. Regular Internal Audits
Conduct internal audits periodically to assess your compliance status. Address any discrepancies promptly to avoid future complications.
4. Collaborate with Experts
Form strategic partnerships with tax advisors and consultants who have expertise in 206AB Compliance check. Their insights will prove invaluable in maintaining compliance excellence.
Conclusion
Navigating the intricacies of 206AB Compliance check may seem challenging, but with proper understanding and proactive measures, businesses and individuals can ensure smooth adherence to these regulations. Remember to keep your tax records updated, file income tax returns on time, and perform due diligence on transactions. Seek professional advice whenever necessary and stay informed about changing compliance requirements. By following these expert tips and staying ahead of the curve, you can confidently achieve 206AB Compliance check success and safeguard your financial interests.

When you hear "fintech," think "unlicensed bank"
Tumblr media
Tomorrow (May 2) I’ll be in Portland at the Cedar Hills Powell’s with Andy Baio for my new novel, Red Team Blues.
Tumblr media
In theory, patents are for novel, useful inventions that aren’t obvious “to a skilled practitioner of the art.” But as computers ate our society, grifters began to receive patents for “doing something we’ve done for centuries…with a computer.” “With a computer”: those three words had the power to cloud patent examiners’ minds.
If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/01/usury/#tech-exceptionalism
Patent trolls — who secure “with a computer” patents and then extract ransoms from people doing normal things on threat of a lawsuit — are an underappreciated form of “tech exceptionalism.” Normally, “tech exceptionalism” refers to bros who wave away things like privacy invasions by arguing that “with a computer” makes it all different.
These tech exceptionalists are the legit face of tech exceptionalism, the Forbes 30 Under 30 set. They’re grifters, but they’re celebrated grifters. There’s a whole bottom-feeding sludge of tech exceptionalists that don’t get the same kind of attention, like patent trolls.
Oh, and the fintech industry.
As Riley Quinn says, “when you hear ‘fintech,’ think: ‘unlicensed bank.’” The majority of fintech “innovation” consists of adding “with a computer” to highly regulated activities and declaring them to be unregulated (and, in the case of crypto, unregulatable).
There are a lot of heavily regulated financial activities, like dealing in securities (something the crypto industry is definitely doing and claims it isn’t). Most people don’t buy or sell securities regularly — indeed, most Americans own little or no stocks.
But you know what regulated financial activity a lot of Americans participate in?
Going into debt.
As wages stagnate and the price of housing, medical care, childcare, transportation and education soar, Americans fund their consumption with debt. Trillions of dollars’ worth of debt. Many of us are privileged to borrow money by walking into a bank and asking for a loan, but millions of Americans are denied that genteel experience.
Instead, working Americans increasingly rely on payday lenders and other usurers who charge sky-high interest rates, on top of penalties and fees, trapping borrowers in an endless cycle of indebtedness. This is an historical sign of a civilization in decline: productive workers require loans to engage in useful activities. Normally, the activity pans out — the crop comes in, say — and the debt is repaid.
But eventually, you’ll get a bad beat. The crop fails, the workshop burns down, a pandemic shuts down production. Instead of paying off your debt, you have to roll it over. Now, you’re in an even worse situation, and the next time you catch a bad break, you go further into debt. Over time, all production comes under the control of creditors.
The historical answer to this is jubilee: a regular wiping-away of all debt. While this was often dressed up in moral language, there was an absolutely practical rationale for it. Without jubilee, eventually, all the farmers stop growing food so that they can grow ornamental flowers for their creditors’ tables. Then, as starvation sets in, civilization collapses:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/07/08/jubilant/#construire-des-passerelles
As the debt historian Michael Hudson says, “Debts that can’t be paid, won’t be paid.” Without jubilee, indebtedness becomes a chronic and inescapable condition. As more and more creditors attach their claims to debtors’ assets, they have to compete with one another to terrorize the debtor into paying them off, first. One creditor might threaten to garnish your paycheck. Another, to repossess your car. Another, to evict you from your home. Another, to break your arm. Debts that can’t be paid, won’t be paid — but when you have a choice between a broken arm and stealing from your kid’s college fund or the cash-register, maybe the debt can be paid…a little. Of course, digital tools offer all kinds of exciting new tools for arm-breakers — immobilizing your car, say, or deleting the apps on your phone, starting with the ones you use most often:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/04/02/innovation-unlocks-markets/#digital-arm-breakers
Under Trump, payday lenders romped through America. A lobbyist for the payday lenders became a top Trump lawyer:
https://theintercept.com/2017/11/27/white-house-memo-justifying-cfpb-takeover-was-written-by-payday-lender-attorney/
This lobbyist then oversaw Trump’s appointment of a Consumer Finance Protection Bureau boss who deregulated payday lenders, opening the door to triple digit interest rates:
https://www.latimes.com/business/lazarus/la-fi-lazarus-cfpb-payday-lenders-20180119-story.html
To justify this, the payday loan industry found corruptible academics and paid them to write papers defending payday loans as “inclusive.” These papers were secretly co-authored by payday loan industry lobbyists:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2019/02/25/how-payday-lending-industry-insider-tilted-academic-research-its-favor/
Of course, Trump doesn’t read academic papers, so the payday lenders also moved their annual conference to a Trump resort, writing the President a check for $1m:
https://www.propublica.org/article/trump-inc-podcast-payday-lenders-spent-1-million-at-a-trump-resort-and-cashed-in
Biden plugged many of the cracks that Trump created in the firewalls that guard against predatory lenders. Most significantly, he moved Rohit Chopra from the FTC to the CFPB, where, as director, he has overseen a determined effort to rein in the sector. As the CFPB re-establishes regulation, the fintech industry has moved in to add “with a computer” to many regulated activities and so declare them beyond regulation.
One fintech “innovation” is the creation of a “direct to consumer Earned Wage Access” product. Earned Wage Access is just a fancy term for a program some employers offer whereby workers can get paid ahead of payday for the hours they’ve already worked. The direct-to-consumer EWA offers loans without verifying that the borrower has money coming in. Companies like Earnin claim that their faux EWA services are free, but in practice, everyone who uses the service pays for the “Lightning Speed” upsell.
Of course they do. Earnin charges sky-high interest rates and twists borrowers’ arms into leaving a “tip” for the service (yes, they expect you to tip your loan-shark!). Anyone desperate enough to pay triple-digit interest rates and tip the service for originating their loan is desperate and needs to the money now:
https://prospect.org/power/05-01-2023-fintech-ewa-payday-loan-scam/
EWA annual interest rates sit around 300%. The average EWA borrower uses the service two or three times every month. EWA CEOs and lobbyists claim that they’re banking the unbanked — but the reality is that they’re acting as sticky-fingered brokers between banks and young, poor workers, marking up traditional bank services.
This fact is rarely mentioned when EWA companies lobby state legislatures seeking to be exempted from usury rules that are supposed to curb predatory lenders. In Vermont, Earnin wants an exemption from the state’s 18% interest rate cap — remember, the true APR for EWA loans is about 300%.
In Texas, payday lenders are classed as loan brokers, not loan originators and are thus able to avoid the state’s usury caps. EWAs are lobbying the Texas legislature for further exemptions from state money-transmitter and usury limit laws, principally on the strength of the “it’s different: we do it with a computer” logic.
But as Jarod Facundo writes for The American Prospect, quoting Monica Burks from the Center for Responsible Lending, a loan is a loan even if it’s with a computer: “The industry is trying to create a new definition for what a loan is in order to exempt themselves from existing consumer protection laws… When you offer someone a portion of money on the promise that they will repay it, and often that repayment will be accompanied with fees or charges or interest, that’s what a loan is.”

Mcyt’s when you’re toxic in a game
I’ve been playing valorant lately, so why not? When I say toxic I mean more of a fun toxic, not violently bullying if that makes sense.
Mcyt’s included: Tommy, Dream, Sapnap, Wilbur
Tommy
Flabbergasted
He’s never seen you be so creatively aggressive before, not towards others in a game.
He immediately starts laughing though, so hard that he pushes his chair back and nearly falls out of it. He does die in the game though, not even caring about that.
You laugh with him, the sound of his laughter infectious.
The second he’s back he’s jumping to insulting others with you, and the two of you start tag-teaming your (not so) innocent teammates.
"Go play fortnite" may or may not have been used, along with the classic "step on Legos."
“Wait, I’ve got this one, I’ve got it!” Tommy exclaims, and the sounds of him frantically typing can be heard over your call.
“Make it good, come on.” You urge.
“I’m typing! I’m typing!”
The second his typing noises stop, a message appears in chat for all players to see. “I’m about to build a bible and pray for better teammates” it reads.
There’s a moment of silence over the call before the both of you burst into loud laughter.
The two of you can’t be toxic together for long though, because by the end of one match you’re both laughing too hard to think.
Dream
Dream’s a lot like Tommy, definitely.
Laughing, a bit of surprise.
But years of Sapnap have prepared him for his toxic arc, he’s been secretly keeping his toxicity inside the entire game.
He barely needs a moment to read over your chat messages before sending his own, each getting more and more outlandish.
Let’s be honest, he’s trying to impress you with his creative insults that just barely manage to bypass the chat filter.
And let’s not get started when the other team is toxic back, your voice call quickly becomes shouts of wounded egos.
“They called you an idiot sandwich!” You yell, catching the message before Dream does.
“Who the fuck are they?! GORDAN FUCKING RAMSEY?!” He yells right back. “We have to kill them now. We HAVE to.”
“I’ll do it, they’re so bad that I can beat them with my eyes closed.”
And, true to your word, you kill them nearly instantly when the next round starts. Dream cheers you on the entire way before he dies.
Needless to say that the person who killed him starts the cycle again.
If either of you goes too far though, Dream would pull back and insist on finding a better game.
He's not looking to get banned, how else can the two of you be toxic again later?
Sapnap
This is the KING of toxicity
Okay, maybe not king, but Sapnap can be toxic when he wants to be.
He doesn’t need any time, not even a breath, before he’s down in the trenches with you, flying insults at the other team.
There’s a little bit of laughter, but creative toxicity is serious business between the two of you.
The call is full of yelling, and conferencing on the best insult to send at the other players.
While you are avoiding the swear-blocker and any chance of being reported, Sapnap simply does not give a fuck.
It barely takes five minutes before he’s kicked out of the game for his insults, leaving you alone.
You’re both so surprised at the suddenness of it that the call goes completely silent.
"...huh." You say after watching his icon vanish and a message appears showing he was taken out.
"I got- I was- I'm on a penalty." Sapnap groans, and you can imagine him slouching down in his chair.
After another moment you speak up again. "What do you think did it? Which message? The anteater one? The rotten milk one?"
"No fucking way, it was when I said I was going to pay them to delete their account." He laughs.
"I stand by that you should've done it."
You make sure to win the game for him, but not without one last message.
"Game so easy it might have been the tutorial."
Wilbur
Wilbur, oh Wilbur, he is afraid of the ban hammer.
When you start sending messages he finds it funny, but he doesn't join in. He doesn't tell you to stop, either, so it's a win for you and you keep going.
After a minute or so he'll join in, but only verbally in the call between you two.
Soon enough you're stealing his insults to send, and the reaction from others prompts the both of you to create new ones.
They aren't ever directly mean, either, which makes them so much better.
"Even your imaginary pets are ashamed of you :("
After a while the layers of the insults get so deep they're just a confusing mess to people who aren't you two.
And it's still the funniest thing in the world.
The other team is aware it's an insult, but they can't figure out how, meaning you can say whatever you want and not get reported.
"Here's one, they shoot worse than Hamilton." Wilbur suggests, and you quickly type it up.
"We're the Burr to their Hamilton." You laugh.
Wilbur dies seconds later, groaning. "My backup was a glob of snot, please inform them of that."
Hell if you have any idea what that means, but off it goes for his backup to figure out. This was the most fun you've had playing a game, your face starting to hurt from how hard you're grinning.
Most of the insults he inputs tend to be history related: "Someone is putting this game into their resume for the United Nations", and "he's roleplaying as JFK."
The insults are creative enough that they stick for days afterward, and the two of you exchange them in the company of others, leaving them all confused.

You surreptitiously take your phone from your suit pocket and open up LinkedIn. You aren’t sure why, but you have a bad feeling about how this trial is going to go. Can’t hurt to make sure your information is all up to date!
Tumblr media
After quickly editing your “About” section to reflect the impressive amount of real-life trial experience you’ve gained in the past ten minutes, you feel an uncanny tingling sensation down your spine that can only mean one thing: you’re being watched.
Looking up very, very slowly, you find the eyes of the courtroom on you. Mr Gavin is regarding you with icy disappointment, while Phoenix Wright looks mildly amused. The prosecutor (what was his name again? Plantain?) nearly has steam coming out of his ears, and the judge…
The judge presses his lips into a thin line. “Glad you could join us, Mr Justice. I’m sure you have more interesting things to be doing on that newfangled device of yours than paying attention to the courtroom, but i will have to give you a penalty for this.”
Ack!
Rubbing the back of your neck (as is your nervous habit), you try to grin without it coming out as a grimace. “Sorry, Your Honor. I just received an…important memo.”
“I am certain that it was very relevant to your job prospects,” Mr Gavin remarks from beside you. Crap! He definitely saw what you were doing.
“While Mr Justice was otherwise occupied, the court has established that Mr Wright’s fingerprints were found on the murder weapon, in such an orientation as to suggest that he held it inverted as though to strike the victim. This is contradictory to his statement that he never touched the bottle! We also clarified that it was indeed also Mr Wright who placed the call to emergency services about the incident in the club’s basement…though he did so from the ground floor.”
Mr Gavin nods. “Yes. As one may expect, there was no cell reception in the basement room—requiring my client to leave in order to make his call. However, the prosecution has indicated that they have evidence that shows the defendant was in the basement room at the ‘very moment the crime occurred’—so you may as well call your so-called ‘decisive witness’ to the stand already, Payne.”
You’re starting to think that this trial really doesn’t need you to be involved, and perhaps also that everyone else in this room has complicated backstories regarding how they all seem to know each other already.
Mr Wright leaves the witness stand, only to be replaced by a woman clad in thick fur clothing, who looks scared out of her mind to be here. You take a moment to assess the situation and plan out your next move:
