Between Circe and Charybdis: Scylla, with two tails
Tumblr media
Scylla is a hybrid monster from Homer’s Odyssey, and to me, an exquisite emblem of feminine rage—as well as one of the grandmothers to the two tailed siren. Like the Scythian ancestral goddess, she’s also sometimes shown with two tails. Unlike that snake legged deity, or Typhon or the Giants, Scylla doesn’t get her double tails from literature. In the Odyssey, Scylla is described as having 12 feet, six necks, and rows of teeth— making her sound like a giant squid that howls like a dog. However, the first time Scylla appears in ancient art, in the fifth century BCE, she’s imagined as a woman with a single fish tail and dog heads around her waist.
A Scylla on an Etruscan grave in central Italy show her two tails braided or criss-crossed. This is similar to Typhon and other snaked-legged mermen from Etruscan art. If Typhon is the forerunner to the two-tailed Scylla, that would make literary sense: the writer Hyginus said Typhon was Scylla’s father. However, as most Scyllas aren’t shown with crossed tails, this is just an interesting parallel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: Scylla, Etruscan stele, Bologna. Right: Two tailed, winged Typhon, about 540-530 BCE. Black figure hydria, Greek, Chalcidian. Staatliche Antikensammlungen, Munich.
Soon enough, Scylla finds the joys of uncrossing her tails: so much better to strangle men with. The Scylla on an Etruscan urn in the British Museum has snared two of Odysseus’ companions in the coils of her tails— and she is often shown attacking, either strangling men in her coils or her dogs biting limbs.
Tumblr media
Two tailed Scylla, 200 BCE-100 BCE Etruscan urn, Siena, Italy. In the British Museum.
Two tailed Scyllas are common on urns and sarcophagi of Etruria, in central Italy, and she was a common design on urns, tombs and graves.
In Etruria, the journey to the afterlife involved traveling by sea. Not enough Etruscan stories have survived the centuries, so we cannot know for sure—but with the number of Scyllas on tombs, urns, and grave gifts, it is clear that she was part of the soul’s journey to the afterlife. Perhaps she was a psychopomp, or she could have represented the trials one would face in the afterlife. Also, the Etruscans believed the underworld was in the west. Since Scylla’s home was thought to be the Straits of Messina, west of ancient Etruria, it’s easy to understand how she was associated with the underworld.
Tumblr media
Two tailed Scylla, Etruscan urn. 3rd-2nd century BCE. Lourve museum. This Scylla's tails end in serpent heads, similar to some images of the Scythian ancestral goddess.
In addition to two tails and dogs around her waist, Estrucan Scyllas are often shown with a leaf skirt around their waist.
Tumblr media
Two tailed Scylla with wings, holding two anchors. National Archeological Museum, Florence. 300 BCE. My photograph.
Like the Scythian goddess, Scylla is usually wearing a skirt over her genitals. Her arms are outstretched, but for different reasons: she holds anchors or brandishes oars. Or, in this lovely silver version, she hoists a boulder.
Tumblr media
Two tailed Scylla medallion, silver gilt. Greek, (Tarentine,) 3rd Century BCE.
For all her aggression and stomach-turning lower body, her upper body follows Virgil’s description: a nymph, curvy and naked to the waist, her hair long, gold bracelets on her wrists. This Scylla is both erotic and deadly. Originally from the bottom of a drinking cup, the whirlpool Charybdis would be created whenever the cup was swirled.
Interestingly, it sounds like poets ret-conned her two tailed appearance into literature. Roman poet Virgil says Scylla has more than one tail: he uses the plural “delphinum caudas,” meaning more than one tail in the original Latin. It sounds like he was looking at sculptures of Scylla for inspiration. Virgil repeats this motif, having Aeneas encounter “double-shaped Scyllas” when he descends to the underworld.
Tumblr media
Two-tailed Scylla and Cerberus, Tomb of the Reliefs, end of the 4th-beginning of the 3rd century BCE. Cerveteri, Italy.  Image via Wikipedia.
Scylla is next to Cerebus, Hades’ three-headed dog. She has an oar slung over her shoulder and wears a skirt over her two tails.
The two tailed Scylla was popular in other areas of the ancient world, showing up on Roman coins to flasks to large sculptures in Greece. She shows up with two tails on everything from Roman coins to flasks to large sculptures. An image on a mirror handle shows all things Scylla: two dogs protrude from either side of her body, she raises an oar or club in her left hand, and two curling tails rise on either side of her. She likely held a rock in her right hand. Intriguingly, this Scylla looks like she has fin-like wings open behind her.
Tumblr media
Two tailed Scylla holding an oar. From a vase or folding mirror, metal sheet. Workshop of Taras in Italy. Attic workshop. The Sanctuary of Dodona exhibit. 350-300 BCE, Athens National Museum.
There are many more images of two tailed Scyllas, which I’ll be talking about in upcoming posts. I’m going to end with a 1st century image of the Scythian ancestral goddess, which to me shows that these two figures may be influencing one another. I think the snake-legged Scythian goddess could have inspired Scylla’s two tailed, front-facing pose, while Scylla gave the Scythian goddess her leaf skirt.

Me, wrangling tray after tray of growth pots ten months ago: "Well, this is a huge amount of trouble and effort, but I won't be starting so many native pollinator plants next year, so at least I only have to do this once!"
Me looking at seed catalogs this year: "Wow, that liatris is pretty. And that bellflower. And I don't have any native ratibida, I should do some of that. And I didn't get any seeds off of the echinacea to start for this season, the goldfinches ate it all, which is what I *want,* but I really would like some more of those. And there's a native delphinum that blooms in July, wow! Howabout I just do...ten or fifteen varieties of native this year? That's only about a thousand new plants, no big deal, right?"

Small splotches of electric blue dot the prairie from a glance, Delphinium exaltatum, state threatened in Ohio; around them some Allium cernuum and  Pycnanthemum virginianum mixed in with the Eryngium yuccifolium and the Monarda fistulosa.
Many species with white flowers attract more wasps then they do bees. These wasps are critical for ecosystem health and offering a predatory level to the food webs. Many bees and skippers seem to be more favorable of pink flowering species, while this is highly simplified information understanding this gives a person an idea of what insects and at what level of abundance they are present. Similarly with blue flowers many bees are attracted to them, Delphinium exaltatum is also know for attracting humming birds, hawkmoths, clearwings, and large butterflies and skippers.
