How do you draw your high contrast, shape-y pieces? I’ve tried something similar but it always end up off, any recommendations on brushes or exercises that could help with improvement?
(I wasn't sure what part was giving you trouble, so this is sorta an all-over smattering 😅 hopefully some of it helps!)
• the kind of brushes don't really matter, just what you're comfortable with using! more chisel-shaped or calligraphy-style brushes might be harder to control strokes with though. I do personally like using brushes that are like...Mostly Round But With a Little Grit to 'Em!
• work at a higher size and/or resolution than your final size (I usually work at ~3x final size). scaling down will smooth out little imperfections and some of the little aliasing weirdness that comes from raster transformations (scale/rotate/etc.)
• drawing with your arm, as in moving from your elbow while keeping your wrist pretty still, makes big smooth curves much easier (you can also go from the shoulder for BIG movements)
• most drawing programs will let you rotate the canvas -- drawing downward strokes tend to be easier to control (extra cheat: if a stroke is proving troublesome, I'll sometimes draw it as best I can on a new layer, move/rotate it into the exact position I want, and then merge it down again)
• instead of trying to draw a super precise shape and fill it in, I usually draw a bigger, shittier shape, and then use an eraser or layer mask to kinda chisel it into the shape I want:
• Always Check Your Values -- especially if you're finding your colors feel kinda muddy or not contrast-y enough, it's a good idea to make sure there's contrast in the light/dark as well as the hue/saturation! I usually have an adjustment layer set to 0 saturation that I keep on top of my document, and just periodically toggle on and off to check. (there's some debate about the most accurate way to check values, but this works well enough for high-contrast solid blocks of color.)
• on the same note, instead of using pure grayscale colors, particularly full black (#000000) and white (#FFFFFF), adding a little bit of color into them can give you a richer, more interesting and more cohesive result.
(and even when using pure grays, using slightly "off" from full black and white can be more interesting! and it's not to say DON'T use black and white and gray, more just...use them thoughtfully, instead of by default?)
• color thumbs/sketches/roughs, whatever you want to call them. people get SO weird at me about these for some reason, but they're literally just...a little sketch of figuring out colors before you start painting. they don't have to be final or detailed or any good or whatever, it's just to get a starting idea! working super fast and loose especially helps to get out of the mindset of Doing A Good Drawing and more into messing around with shapes and negative space and all that fun stuff. :> then later you can focus on the Doing A Good Drawing part, without having to also think too hard about the other stuff.
• Keep It Simple -- 100% the hardest part. I have absolutely not mastered this in any way. 💀 it's SO easy to overwork this style and end up too detailed/too unfocused/just too much going on -- half the time I spend on these things is just adding details -> squinting at it for a couple of minutes -> erasing all the details again. you gotta keep in mind that it's about getting an idea across more than anything else, and when it comes to that, less is almost always more!
(this is one of the reasons I sometimes make myself use SUPER restricted palettes; when you only have three colors, it forces you to really think about what's important to show and how to leave things implied. ✌️)

you might have seen that selecting a creature's primary color as pure black makes the other parts all color weird, whereas this doesnt happen with an even slightly lighter shade
and also picking a color with the paint like option from a vehicle or building with pitch black ends up not changing the paint colors and just works weird
i cant explain why the paint like thing happens, but why does this happen with creatures???
this is what the texture on MoMo looks like here, with pitch black and slightly-off-pitch-black, while loading
so for some reason it applies an odd white tint on the parts. the very moment the parts start loading in the textures they already gain the weird white tint, then they get marginally darkened by the ambient occlusion
heres another example with an outfitted creature. the coat and detail colors are the same, i only changed the base color
it looks SORT of similar to when i use the color dodge blend mode on a copy of the same layer (left), but its still not quite there to what it actually does (right)
to get into some detail, every part texture is split into a diffuse, specbump (which is irrelevant here and completely unaffected by the base color, i checked) and tintmask texture
so something has to be getting messed up with either the diffuse texture, the tintmask, or both
my only theory is that the tintmasks for all of the parts are set to be additive, somehow, and not only that but the individual tint colors get layered over each other. which is the only thing that would explain why these blue specks are purely white now, i think???
though im not getting the same result by applying the tintmask from this accessory part (which only uses the detail color tint) onto the diffuse texture. it just tints it
im also not sure why it would make the toes on momo, in the example above, white
in any case blend modes seem to be the most likely culprit. though im not sure why its even applying blend modes in the first place just because the base color is #000000 instead of #050505
oh also, pitch #ffffff white works perfectly fine

Your Mustsumi piece is really stylish! How did you do the backgrounds and come up with the composition?
Thank you so much! :-) I feel it's appropriate to respond to this ask on Mutsumi's birthday hehe. Forgive my weird wording btw (if it seeps in) as I am unfortunately strange like that (and feel free to ask away any questions!)
Summary: Modify already existing patterns, the darker your white is the better (trust), focus on the focal point, and Man I fucking love triangles.
First on the background (with a hint of color theory):

I took it from the Ibis Paint X image-archive-thing (???). It's actually a nice resource for stuff like this. If you use a different drawing platform try looking for your own in-app/in-program archive or consider searching online. In Ibis Paint X, not all patterns are available for non-premium users but personally it's not much of an issue (especially since non-premium versions of these textures tend to exist, with different colorings).
There are tons of these available by looking into the Japanese Texture (Color), Cloth Patterns (Color) and Patterns (Color) sections. Personally I prefer to alter the already colored ones as they are easier to work with, while the Gray/B&W ones require more retouching with blend mode layers. However, feel free to experiment and use whatever works best for you.
I was lucky to find one with a similar color palette to my drawing, but there's still some tweaking to be done to make it darker and warmer (as stated in the image). In this drawing it was relatively straightforward, though I've previously had to make more detailed modifications in other ones to make everything blend in naturally (mainly painting over different elements and particular shapes).
There's no rule for the specific blend modes –as in, they don't necessarily have to be multiply + darken, and there's no need to restrict yourself to solely 2 layers either. The same could be said about the opacity. It's merely situational. Instead, try playing around with them and/or learn how each one works to be able to pick them quicker.
For example, once I had applied the multiply layer something still felt off: there was a lack of ocre tones, which had been cancelled by the purple-ish color I painted it all over with. I especially wanted the darker colors to lean towards purple, while making the lighter ones lean towards green, so I applied a green darken layer which mainly affects the tones closer to white.
On a separate note: Color theory yay!! I freaking love color theory!!! As you can see in the bottom corner, I didn't use (and don't tend to ever use) pure white (#FFFFFF) or pure black (#000000). Actually, some artists will strongly advise against doing so, saying it looks beginner-like and muddy. I slightly disagree with this, or at least I think it's a bad way to put it (I mean, have you seen comic art? Pure black shading can look great when done well).
However, it's true that beginners won't be great at using pure black/white and it's greatly beneficial to experiment with off-white and such. Adding a slight tint to your neutrals makes a nice difference, and IMO the greater you can make it stray away from its original tone and still make it look convincing, the better!
By the way, notice how there's no "white" or "black" in the background? I reserved these contrasting tones for the figure. This is to draw your attention towards her, instead of adding more contrast to the background and making it all overwhelming.
Anyways, here are some other drawings in which I also used modified preset Ibis backgrounds:
• These KanaMafu drawings. It's the same pattern in both drawings, just flipped vertically and with inverted colors.
• This Kanade drawing.
Now, moving onto composition:

Not gonna lie, this was all a pretty subconscious process. I actively had to look for the principles I had applied, because honestly "figure in the center of a vertical canvas" seemed simple enough for a composition, but there's more to it!
I honestly feel like this is very self-explanatory as shown in the image, but if it isn't please ask me to elaborate B-).
Note: regarding the "airbrush work" mentioned, I meant I slightly painted over with a dark airbrush towards the bottom of the canvas and then lowered the opacity. Again, the whole thought process here was Closer to the focal point = lighter colors, smaller shapes and more detailed brush strokes.
But! There's more!!!:

Still on composition and color, something that is extremely useful and that I unfortunately forgot to do while working on this drawing is to check your values. This means translating the piece into B&W.
Due to the fact that I didn't check my values, the hair sort of blends in with the background. Upon noticing this, I added a highlight the same color as the angel wings (off-white). This was useful at making more of a distinction, but I could've definitely pushed it further had I followed this advice.
Onto (probably) my favorite art advice ever: TRIANGLES. Use triangles whenever you can. ESPECIALLY when there's negative space (space not occupied by the figure). This works so well to make your silhouettes more legible and dynamic. It's a life-saver.
Also, look up Sinix Design and Marco Bucci on YouTube for some great art advice.
I'm pretty sure that's all, sorry for becoming the yap monster. I really hope this was helpful! Thanks again for your ask and have a nice day/afternoon/night.

I've finally made a decent enough fake pep clone creacher
Basic Info:
Name: Otto
Gender: Male
He/They/It
Speaks normally, but can also speak backwards
He's known to be pretty gentle compared to most clones. He's quite observant and curious, also very kind hearted and just kinda goofy
Only gets aggressive when provoked, otherwise he tries being gentle when around other clones
Otto's DNA is based off of a mimic octopus. Despite having DNA from a purely aquatic creature, they can breathe both in water and on land. He's also capable of spitting black, poisonous ink from his mouth.
He's a really good shapeshifter as well, capable of changing forms to disguise as other clones/people and mimic their looks and behaviors almost perfectly, even from just the smallest details. He's even capable of mimicking the voice of the person he's disguising as. He can also camouflage to blend in with the area he's in to hide and sneak around others.
Regardless of whatever form he'll possess, he will naturally have his tentacles protruding from his back no matter what. However, he can meld and shape his tentacles into different things to accommodate the appearance he has taken [a tail, extra limbs, accessories, etc.].

Color Palette:
Details:
#FFFFFF - Tanktop + Hat
#DCDADF - Skin
#7958B5 - Arm Marks
#484266 - "Undershirt"
#393944 - Pants Stripe
#000000 - Pants + Hair

Arcane textbook explanations
Midjourney prompt: "A surreal dark fantasy scene combining various horror elements. The primary figure is a giant, menacing, tentacled monster emerging from stormy clouds, its numerous tentacles stretching across the sky. Below it, a person is shown emerging from water, their arms raised towards the sky, with dark, spider-like creatures flying around them illuminated by a bright, ominous light. The underwater scene reveals multiple skeletal hands reaching upwards towards the surface where the person is emerging. In the background, a dark, foggy forest is filled with zombie-like figures raising their arms towards a flock of crows flying above. The atmosphere is eerie, with dim, diffuse lighting and a dark color palette dominated by shades of green (#3A5F0B), black (#000000), and gray (#808080). The image has a high-resolution, film grain photo quality with detailed textures and a horror mood." --chaos 25 --weird 25 --style raw --s 5

Extremely stupid complaint from what little of RWBY I've watched so far: why are their blacks actually black (looks like #000000 hex) and their whites actually white (looks like #ffffff hex)? First, the blacks they're using deny so much texture, and I can't actually tell what Blake's hair is supposed to look like, and second, the whites look dead, which is why I've learned to avoid true whites in what art I can do.
One of the first things I learned attempting to learn art out of art class was that you never use true blacks and true whites because of this.
I really hope it gets better on this front at some point, because it's driving me crazy.
Things they could've done
So one of the places this is worst is in Blake and Ruby's hair.
Blake's primary color (at least in Volume 1) is black and her secondary color is purple. For the hair, just... let her hair be a really dark purple. Looks black, but lets us see the detailing I'm sure is in her hair.
Ruby's primary color is red. She already has red in her hair, so why not just make the black part slightly lighter? I would not look at a really dark grey being used instead of black and go "well that's not really black..." I have never met someone who would.
That is the most petty complaint about RWBY I have so far: let me see details in the hair of people with black hair.
I will probably do more of these.

Basic light attempts
I exported the file to .fbx format so that I could do the most basic experimentation with light in Windows, I would try various angles and colors of light and then pick the one that best suited the style of the image
Lighting Options
46 degree angle
HSV
Light 1: #FF28C9 Light 2: #6EEA2 Light 3: #D32E2E
The main light source is on the front side, so you can see the details of the object more clearly
287 degree angle
HSV
Light 1: #2DFF34 Light 2: #E8E8E8 Light 3: #000000
The theme color is too green, and the overall light source is the left side of the light, highlighting the outline and tension of the image
146 degree angle
HSV
Light 1: #35227A Light 2: #FFFFBC Light 3: #FF4400
The image is too warm, which can leave the scene in a twilight state

the following is a work of fiction based of a tweet that made me angry. cw // delusions , vent
I very rarely commission art anymore. I make all of my money by drawing for others, and it all goes to bills. But once, just this once, I had an opportunity. An artist I like with a cartoony style befitting of my character discounted their comms just enough that I could justify supporting them. After all, I can't really feel guilty about a luxury purchase if it's cheap and helps someone else, right?
Communications were smooth sailing; I gave them my ref and payment and they told me their turnaround time. They seemed really nice and even told me they liked my art ;w; (they didn't follow me back though but it's fine haha). It's getting pretty close to the deadline, so I'm really excited to see what they did with my character.
I'm just scrolling Twitter right now and... oh! Message badge! I kind of expect it to be a client, but it's them! The artist! My art must be ready!
"Had a blast working on this ^^ Thank you for commissioning me!"
The sentiment was followed by a link. I clicked it, and was met by my character. But....
Why is the mouth blacked out?
It almost looks like some sort of rendering error. I mean, it's FULL 000000 BLACK with no details. It's supposed to be open and happy, but it's just the silhouette of the expected expression.
My first thought is that I've slipped into an alternate reality, one where this is normal! Or maybe I actually asked for this? Did I ask for the mouth to be blacked out? No, I wouldn't do that... That's illogical. I don't feel so good.
"Hey!" I ask them, "Do you know what's going on with the mouth?"
The seconds seem to stretch on. I need an answer before my mind begins to act up.
Typing...
"I'm sorry? I don't know what you mean. Are you unsatisfied with the piece?"
That's. Not good. What. Why-
I look back at the piece.
The eyes are big and round, so bright and happy. The cheek fluff is big and had amazing highlights. Everything is clear and done with purpose. But the mouth... It's like someone cut it out with a lasso tool. If the artist didn't do it, then..... Then I must be going crazy.
I quickly navigate to my character's toyhouse page. Am I hallucinating? Will the other pieces have a problem too? No, they're all fine. My sweet summer child, staring back at me hundreds of times over, mostly renditions from years past. She's happy, and she's okay.
I quickly attempt to rationalize. This can't be a computer glitch; I don't know much about computers, but I know this. It can't be a hallucination; I don't actually experience those, I just fear that I do. So then....
Is the artist lying?
If this is a joke then it's not funny... my heart rate is elevated, it's practically psychological assault. I message them again.
"Here's what I'm seeing on my end. You don't know anything?" Attached is the same photo they sent me.
No response.
I start to hit the arms of my chair to keep myself busy while the anticipation eats me alive.
Suddenly, the worst possible outcome:
"You can no longer send messages to this person."
The tears start unprompted.
"nononononononono they're lying they did this they hurt me i DIDN'T EVEN GET MY ART. WHAT GIVES?"
My dog approaches me and lays her head on my leg. She knows when I'm in distress, but I'm not in any mood to be comforted. I ignore her and frantically swap to my alt account to check the artist's profile. And it looks like they've started causing quite a scene.
"I’m on my knees Begging y’all to PLS add an open mouth view on your ref sheets OTL Doesn’t have to be complex! Could even be a disembodied tongue and single tooth. PLEASE JUST PUT IT SOMEWHERE I hate having to guess the colors and most likely get it wrong 😖"
Wh- They didn't-
I check back in our DMs. I had given an older ref because it had fit the style better. On closer inspection, no tongue ref.
"Her tongue is just pink.... how hard would it have been to ask...."
I refresh.
"if you give me a mouth-less view ref sheet, I’m going to passive aggressively color any open mouths on commissions pure black. That’s it. And not even off black so u can see the lines. FULL 000000 BLACK. NO DETAILS Check ur refs :U"
P- PASSIVE AGGRESSIVELY?????
I'm in shock. They thought that not delivering the product I paid for, blocking me, and scaring the SHIT out of me was a form of PASSIVE aggression????? And they say "check ur refs" like this is some sort of PSA? Like we're supposed to want to LISTEN to them after being blatantly threatened with vandalized art? I'm furious. I'm furious and baffled, but at least I'm no longer scared.
At the end of the day, I'm just happy the artist told on themselves so that no one will commission them any time soon.
A refund sure would be nice though.
#short story#i don't know why i felt like i had to do this#it felt like it really happened to me even though it actually hasn't happened to anybody#they're just making empty threats#just in case they delete the tweet i linked: the artist is TheDragonElk

1. Keverjük habosra a vajat a cukorral és a tojásokkal. A lisztet vegyítsük össze a sütőporral, a sóval és a fűszerekkel, majd kanalanként adjuk a tojásos-vajas masszához. Keverjük sima tésztává.

oh my goodness your art is just. sublime. i can't even express how beautiful your rendering is. please pray tell your painting/colour picking process!
tysm for the kind words!! i'm glad you took the time to send this message!
i don't think i do anything too special, but there are some rules/teachings i try to keep in mind while i work. i love talking about art and color so i'm happy to get into them in what'll probably end up as an unnecessary amount of detail!!! let's go!!
first off, relativity is The Main Rule of coloring, and you'll probably see it referenced in, like, all of the following tips, because it's my main way of thinking about art. color relativity is less of a school of thought and more of a scientific truth: human vision is incapable of processing color on its own, we can only process what we see as it appears relative to its neighbors. my bro josef albers did a lot of important work on this subject.

it always comes back to bauhaus.
you don't see blue, you see bluer-than-everything-else. if your surroundings are orange (blue's opposite on the color wheel, or, in relativity-speak, the-least-possible-blue), the bluer-than-everything-else object may as well look gray in a blue setting. though i gave a simple example, this isn't a simple spectrum, because saturation and value also affect each other, making for a three-dimensional matrix of trouble.
boy, if everyone understood this concept, that white-gold/blue-black dress argument sure would've been short.
anyway, going from there:
1) i usually start with a 50% neutral gray background. relativity is a negotiation, and starting in the color equivalent of switzerland sure makes negotiations easier. starting with white will make everything look darker and more intense than it really is. (this tip works for irl painting too, i always tint my gesso!)
2) #ffffff and #000000 are treats only for special occasions. they are the fried ice creams of values. use them sparingly and in very important areas (or not at all--i tend to avoid true black altogether in lineless work, usually opting for a deep tone of the work's main color instead). i save these until i'm very close to finishing up, because if you add them too early, you'll throw off the balance of the relativity.
3) finally getting to actual color! when choosing highlights and shadows, i always adjust the color in addition to the value according to a general rule: lighter areas appear warmer, and darker areas appear cooler. this is a pretty common tip, but it's parroted for a reason: it works! for flesh tones, that means highlights are yellower and shadows are redder or bluer. doing this also adds liveliness and helps prevent the doll-like appearance that rendered flesh can get (but don't get carried away with this or you'll end up lisa franking it. not that lisa franking doesn't have its own important application).

4) relativity isn't just something you have to negotiate with. once you get the hang of it, it's a very useful tool! as renowned art theorist francis bacon famously said: color relativity is an excellent servant, but a terrible master to circle all the way back: - if you want something to look very blue, surround it with orange, - if you want something to look very light, surround it with darkness, - if you want something to look very saturated, surround it with dull colors, and vice versa. this can be a useful compositional tool, not just a rendering one--make the focus of your drawing light/dark and saturated, and keep the unimportant areas in duller mid-tones.
a straightforward application of relativity is in the whites of the eyes, because you have an area on the face that's neutral by nature, and neutral = your playing field. like our homestuck kids with their fun eye colors... to make rose's purple eyes look super purple, i tinted the whites of her eyes just a little bit yellow-y (i ended up leaning into soft orange bc otherwise you'll just get jaundice).

and this isn't a just one-way relationship: in the john piece, i DIDN'T want his eyes to be a super distinguished blue, because that was a work about him feeling too absorbed/swallowed in his surroundings (retcon power moping), so i made the whites of his eyes very blueish, lessening the impact of his eye color.

slightly off the vein of relativity: i also usually like making the whites of the eyes around the same value and saturation as the skintone for a sense of cohesiveness, but that's more of an personal preference. white-whites kinda scare me (but, to emphasize, scary eyes have their own application--see, conveniently, kanaya and her brighter-than-her-skintone eyes for that slightly uncanny alien vamp effect!).
i mentioned that i always start with a 50% gray background, but if you're particularly discerning, you may be thinking: hey, wait, your rosemary piece has a darkish blue-gray background! cheater!
and my response to that is yes. so true. i was cheating. color relativity may be a negotiation for the artist, but it's a straight-up scam for the viewer. that's why they call it a trompe l'oeil, a deception of the eye, and not something nicer. i wanted to make rose appear very warm and a little yellowish because she's Sun Light Girl and a cooler background will fool people into seeing that. i wanted to make kanaya appear glowy without painting her white, because, as mentioned, that's fried ice cream, so a darker background will fool people into seeing that.
here's what it would've looked like on a neutral background vs. the final one:

haha ignore the lazy leg i hid in the shadow
this is why i think it's so important to start pretty neutral. if you go full saturation/light/dark from the start, then you'll have no room to play! this doesn't mean painting in shades of gray, but it does mean having a bit of restraint with the extremes of color and value. this can involve a little more planning and negotiating, but the results tend to be worth it. and, luckily, those of us in the digital realm can easily tweak these relationships through adjustment layers and overlays.
fuck that's a lot of text. anyway. hope something or other in there helps.
if something's unclear please know i am a little too eager to clarify!!

Hey, I was just wondering if you could help me out with a color scheme thingy? I have a fantasy character with umber skin (the exact being #675953), black shorts and poncho (#000000), grey shirt (#AFAAB9), and grey and black boots (same codes as stated earlier).
I’m just looking for a nice earthy accent color that would fit nicely (preferably not green, just because that seems a bit obvious; I will go for green if there’s not anything else though)
(disclaimer: I do not consider myself very good at coloring lol)
Hmmmm... umber, black and grey are all very neutral tones, they'd go well with just about anything tbh! If you want it to come off earthy, green IS the obvious direction to go in, but if you'd like to stay in the neutral palette you could play around with browns? There's such a range, from deep red browns to more de-saturated tans. I wouldn't limit yourself to JUST one more color too if it's possible- a dark forest green would look lovely with an ivory, for instance! Nature has lots of colors, mostly just avoid neons or over-saturated colors.
Also, I tend to stray away from pure black for flat colors. I usually keep it a few shades lighter and keep it at half saturation or so, so that it has an undertone that's either cool or warm to match your color scheme! Pure black absolutely has its place, but it often makes a piece look super graphic/harsh. Plus if you make black lineart, like I usually do these days, it renders the details unreadable lol
Off the top of my head, I think these palettes could look nice:

#Anon#Asks#Just my two cents but genuinely I think I'm rlly bad at coloring art LMAO#I took color theory and still don't know a dang thing I just mess around till I don't hate it or till I'm tired#There's a reason black/grey/white/red is my fave palette... It's easy and impactful lol
