The Stories and Symbolisms behind the Garden Codenames (1) The Sleeping Beauty, its origins and its symbolisms
[Manga spoiler alert: Spoilers after the keep-reading line]
Since Endo has given us new details about the Garden and its members (*cough* to be honest that one member), maybe it's time for us to attempt to connect the dots.
Tumblr media
A. Dornröschen KHM50 and the Thorn Princess
Let's start with the obvious.
Yor's codename comes from the title of the Grimm/German version of Sleeping Beauty, Dornröschen (Dorn ["thorn"] +‎ Rose [“rose”] +‎ -chen [diminutive suffix used to make people, animals and things cute and small]). Dornröschen is translated to be 茨姫/いばらひめ (ibara ["thorn"] + hime ["princess"]) in JP, and Little Briar Rose in English. The princess is named Rosamund. The image of Yor, or to be exact, as the Thorn Princess, has always been associated with roses, too.

B. The Eddas and the warrior goddess
While I was trying to reverse-engineer things and google いばら姫 (Yor's JP codename), I found this essay about the origins of Brothers Grimm's on the first page. Something on P.2 caught my attention: "戦死者の霊をヴァルハラ天堂に導く戦いの乙女" (the warrior maiden who guides the souls of the fallen soldiers to Valhalla, "the Hall of the Slain".) Guess who's also interested in 戦うヒロイン (heroines who can fight)? Endo.
Tumblr media
(Source: Eyes Only, P.199)
The Sleeping Beauty has its origins in Nordic mythology and Germanic heroic legend. There is a similar scene in the Eddas where the hero, Sigurd, wakes up Brynhild from a magical sleep and marries her. Except the more interesting fact is that Brynhild is a valkyrie, a warrior goddess/maiden. Brynhild's story does remind me of Yor: "Odin stuck her with a sleep thorn and declared that she must marry." (Source)
The other thing about valkyries that are quite Yor-like is that with the connection with Odin, valkyries "existed in an earlier role as "demons of death'", but as they "became popular figures in heroic poetry," they "were stripped of their 'demonic characteristics and became more human, and therefore become capable of falling in love with mortals […].'" (Source) In the most recent Jump+ exhibition, Endo has said that Yor is the character that has the most character development since the start and he uses the exact same phrase - "she has become more human". (Source)
Tumblr media
Ch.108 Yor being the "demon of death"
The Edda has continued to be inspirations for modern culture, such as Tolkien's The Hobbit, and Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen. And I mean, Wagner. Germany. War. *cough cough*
C. The Sleeping Beauty, the Eddas, and Greek mythology
Of course everything is related to the Greek mythology and the epics. Some claim that the good and bad fairies in Sleeping Beauty are based on the Moirai and the Norns. Not only because of the spindle, but also because they are there to "tell" the fate of the princess. Brynhild also has the ability to prophesy.
Tumblr media
Ch.108
Other than Melinda, the Shopkeeper actually has all three symbols of the Moirai on him: the spinner (the needle), the apportioner (his role as the Shopkeeper), and the one who cut the thread (the scissors on his button).
Tumblr media
Ch.115
It is also suggested that the bad fairy is based on Eris, the goddess and personification of strife and discord. She has initiated the Judgement of Paris by dropping the golden apple. Eris is "the rouser of armies", but she "does not participate in active combat, nor take sides in the war." (source) There's a theory suggesting that the soccer game between Westalis and Ostania is a metaphor for the conflicts and competitions between the SSS and WISE. By refusing to join the soccer match, it could be a way to show that the Garden doesn't want to take sides.
We do have tonnes of sxf characters which seemingly have been linked to some sort of Greek culture. We have Anya's chimera, the Desmonds' griffin, Sugmund Authen's "Eureka!", Barbara's and Demetrius's name, etc.
Yor's name has its Greek origins too. Endo originally wanted to name her Yolanda and it's later shortened to Yor. The Greek form of Yolanda is Iolanthe. There is an opera titled Iolanthe, and if you go to Wikipedia, literally the first sentence describing the first act says, "The beloved fairy Iolanthe [...] committed the capital crime (under fairy law) of marrying a mortal man." Interesting.
D. The Garden and the Beauty Sleeping in the Woods
Let's circle back to the story of Sleeping Beauty. The other Japanese name of the story of The Sleeping Beauty is 眠れる森の美女 (The Beauty Sleeping in the Woods). Where is the Garden located? In the woods. In Lin's tweet about M115, he calls the meeting "a secret meeting deep in the woods" (森奥の密会).
Tumblr media
Ch.115
For Yor's character, we could interpret the transition of "being more human" to be "being awaken". However, it seems like there's another "thing" that is "sleeping" in the woods.
Tumblr media
Ch.115
According to the story, when the princess falls asleep, the whole kingdom falls asleep with her, too. The good fairies try to reverse the effect of the curse - as a result, the princess won't die. She will only be asleep for 100 years.
Remember the theory about how once upon a time Westalis and Ostania used to be of the same country/nation/empire, but there's a split? If that is really the case, is the unification sort of an "awakening"? And frankly, that's probably how the Forgers can stay together without further complications? Anyway.
E. Others
Endo is from a prefecture called Ibaraki-ken 茨城県. Yep, the same ibara as Ibara-hime. His hometown, Koga-shi 古河市, is known for garden roses バラ/ばら "bara". Some think that "ibara" (thorns) is a transliteration for "bara" (roses). It's common to use the Chinese words 薔薇 to name/call the roses, too.
Now we've finally come full circle. Do you remember what the JP title of Dornröschen is? 茨姫/いばらひめ Ibara-hime. Some scholars think that Ibara-hime is a confusing translation - the ibara here doesn't mean only the thorns, but the rose bushes with thorns. (source) And therefore Yor's codename is not about the thorns, but the roses.

It was exciting as it was odd to find her so far away from the laboratory, from ShinRa. He had to wonder just what had brought her to these parts, despite the burning desire to talk and talk about the beauty surrounding them here. Surely, she must've been on some kind of mission or another.
"That makes me infinitely happy! And yet..." He pauses, hand still placed over his chest as he glances away in thought. Should he ask? "Are you conducting some kind of task of import? Out of all the people I expected to see around here, I did not foresee you'd be one of them."
Tumblr media
"And how could I forget you, Chadley?" She wasn't surprised to see him out in the wilds and far from the labs. Her presence outside of them however was quite contrary.

ANALYSIS OF MIRACULOUS LADYBUG.ORIGINS PART 1 LADYBUG AND CHATNOIR (PART 4, marinette's self love and the care of felix by marinette)
Will Felix be chatnoir? clues What clues does Thomas leave us with the poster for the cabaret/cafe of Tournée du Chat Noir by Rodolphe Salis? Is Félix a light for Marinette? Is Felix a lover of art and literature?
ANALYSIS OF MIRACULOUS LADYBUG. ORIGINS PART 1 LADYBUG AND CHATNOIR (PART 3)
Very good, we continue with the analysis, once we know about wayzzz we are going to analyze this sequence and its elements, the first thing we see is that he is sleeping, and this is clearly a reference to the following sequence, in which Marinette also sleeps ,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With this we would confirm what we have said in previous posts, that the initial of Wayzz's name is a reference to Marinette, and Felix protecting Marinette, because notice that in both scenes not only are they both sleeping but we also have a reference to their passion, design and sewing, in the wayzz scene the spool of pink thread and in the scene of marinette sleeping she has a collage of various sewing things as her mobile background, which is also pink.
Tumblr media
This could also give us the subtle clue that the felinette or Felix's affection and care for Marinette will occur when Marinette focuses on her dreams and passions and self-love (a personal development that the Toxinelle multiverse special already shows us)
Tumblr media
We see that Wayzz uses a spool of pink thread as a pillow, and a box of matches as a bed. In the east, the Tournée du Chat Noir poster, next to it several letter stamps with different places and monuments in Paris, each one of Different color. It's worth it in parts.
Tumblr media
1 the spool of pink thread: we have said it many times but we are going to explain it better here, this spool is a clear reference to Marinette and her self-love and passion, we know that her dream is to be a fashion designer, so the spool is ideal to represent that since the thread is necessary to make suits, but it is also pink, a color representative of her, which would indicate that she thinks of herself as her dreams and hopes to shine and do what she loves, It is also a dark pink, that is, it would include black, and the black is Ladybug's, so this not only has to do with her love and confidence in following her dreams but also in accepting that part of herself, accepting herself. herself as she is, being both Marinette and Ladybug (something we know is difficult for her and which we analyzed when we commented on the op in previous posts, you remember it, right?)
Now, another thing to keep in mind is that we know that she is going to lose her memory, that is, she will have amnesia, this affects the head, now we see that wayzz uses precisely the coil as a pillow, the pillow is used to rest the head, takes care of her, if Wayzz represents Marinette and that "Felix protects her", and the reel to Marinette and her dreams, everything together would tell us that Felix is going to be in charge of taking care of Marinette and her dreams, helping her achieve them (ains that cute) and will take care of her when she has amnesia so she doesn't forget her dreams.
Tumblr media
This represents Marinette and her love for sewing and fashion design, apart from the fact that as we know the color pink is her most representative color, wayzz I used it as a pillow would only be confirming that Felix is definitely going to protect Marinette when She loses her memory, because the pillows are used to rest her head and we know that Marinette will have amnesia, if Wayzz represents Felix's protection of Marinette and the coil to Mairnette, Wayzz leans on Marinette, Felixx takes care of Marinette.
2 box of matches, well the first thing is to know the origin of this poster, well yes, the origin and everything is connected with the series (you already know Miraculous Ladybug the charm of putting in all kinds of symbols and sometimes these are profound)
Tumblr media
The first thing is to say that this painting was actually an advertising poster for a Parisian cabaret at the end of the 19th century called "Chat Noir." The cabaret was located in the Montmartre neighborhood, it began as a cafe where painters and poets met, including the famous Picasso, then it became a cabaret after closing its doors. The thing is that since a cabaret is a dark and mysterious place, and since Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, a cat lover, decided to design this poster to promote it, this appeared in the newspapers and said poster rose to fame as a comic poster. and interesting to attract the attention of said hunter.
Well, once we have commented on the origins of this poster, here we can find several interesting facts.
-The hunter is located in what is the Montmartre neighborhood. Why is this important? Because part of this neighborhood is where Marinette's bakery, the cafeteria next door and the school are located, it would be this area:
Tumblr media
so chatnoir is somehow connected to marinette, in short, this wayzz scene was already telling us what Marinette's battle companion was going to be called (regardless of who her bearer is) and therefore also felix, so they would clearly be confirming that Félix will be a chatnoir.
-One of the most popular painters was Picasso, here we have another clue, what does Picasso paint? cubism, and this type of painting in some way are abstract and what the abstract leads to, to Félix, so we would be confirmed again that he will be a chatnoir in the future. [it would also not give the clue that the feligami would occur , well we know that then he has a passion for the world of art and literature, Kagami loves painting, so in the future there would be a good relationship between them, which is what happens today.]
Tumblr media
-Theophile Alexandre loved cats, and made this poster for a cabaret, cabaret are silent, nocturnal and mysterious places just like cats. Who of the 4 main characters fulfills this? Félix, he is mysterious, silent, etc. so he is once again confirming to us that he will be a chat noir but also, he will enjoy this, that is, he will love being a hero, which will be fundamental for the performance of teamwork and it is If we think about it, he loves the subject of magic so it would not be unreasonable for him to enjoy this position.
Tumblr media
So, for me it is clear, very confirmed, Chantoir will be Felix, so through this box they give us this, that is, the matchbox in Chat Noir represents Chatnoir (Felix).
Now, we see that this poster is in a box of matches, what are matches used for? To light a fire, but above all to light candles, the candles give light, the container is responsible for storing the match and not They don't fall off but also, on one of the sides it has a texture so that you can light the match, this texture forms a hexagonal mesh, the same one that forms the wayzz miraculous and the ladybug mesh!! so this could tell us that in some way if wayzz is in the place of the bone matches inside the box, and Felix will be Chatnoir and is represented on the box, it would be that Felix would protect marinette/ladybug and help her rest, The track would confirm to us that what Wayzz itself represents (both in name and physicality, see previous post) and vice versa, that is, Ladybug would also protect him, they would be a team, a good team, what many of us have always wanted.
Tumblr media
but also, Felix would be a light, a guide for Marinette, in those moments with greater darkness where she cannot see, where she feels that she is hurt, depressed, lost… he will guide her, this is really deep, it would not be indicating how powerful and deep the felinette is going to be.
Tumblr media
Let's leave it here because I don't want to make the posts very long otherwise it will be very heavy for you hahaha.
In the next post we are going to look at part 3, the stamps, which have many feligami and felinette tracks, if you are fans of these ships stay, aha =)
Thank you for the support and comments, follow me and like for more content of this type, because each time we will come up with more interesting things…
NEXT PART---
a hug and see you

Bestie bestie bestie!
Hello :) Where to even begin after so much time.. I guess first I'll note that my last anon to you is starred below just so we can follow the thread of last convo somewhat (and honestly just wanted to ensure you knew I at one point wrote in over you hiatuses)..
Ok on to more new stuff: Biggest news is Im off to the wifeys motherland (ironic a bit as I believe shes currently playing in my fatherland). I'll report back on food a day drink 😋 ca va?
Yay Liberty, they did it! 🗽Plenty of kudos to the Lynx as well. Was a great series all around. Even if my nerves barely withstood those overtimes & dramatic endings.
Coaching movement in the W continues to make my head spin. OMG the Thibaults are gone, didnt see that coming tbh! I remain seated for all the hirings/happenings to come. And cant believe we're almost to the lottery selection w still so much upheaval in place 🤯
Hope all is well w you despite lifes busyness. Take care
** Hi hi hi bestie! Yes that anon was me ha. I realized after sending that I left of my emoji signature, but was pretty sure youd connect things, given some hyper specific topics ha. Hope life is treating you alright apart from just being busy!
Im personally just relieved that the Libs managed to even things up last night, while still trying to process the 2nd half & OT of game 1 lol. That one was all just absolutely bonkers. Crazy entertaining, even if it hurt my NY supporting heart at the time.
When it comes to the coaching moves, def in agreement that Indy doesnt deserve good things. What do you make of who the Valks named HC? Seems a good hire to me at a quick glance, but Im also leery of anyone who might be involved w the Aces lawsuit ordeal (tbf Im not super well informed on that, but dont believe Ive ever seen her referenced w that stuff). Yeah objectively I dont feel that a (random) late winning run/playoff push, external circumstances w the standings aside, was worth dropping your odds of getting #1/Paige from like 30 to 10 %. Still struggle to understand why they ended up trying to fight the path that established itself early on. Granted kind of unexpected and extreme circumstances, but still, lemons to lemonade if you will. Im not feeling eager for the draw next month..
Honestly it will be interesting now to see/follow any Liz activity while she hits the offseason as college ball starts up soon. Curious to see if any crumbs or reactions come up at all. W those two seeming to be at an avoidance phase, another college wbb couple needs to step up and provide us w some (non toxic) drama to follow over the season ha! Not you tho Pazzi, you stay lovely/wholesome/stable/healthy
One additional GH note - I obvi live for snark, so wanted to share my fav lines from Ch 10
“Won’t somebody please think about the complications” Jana in full menace mode and so funny. "I mean other than the woman you married as well that is" The fact that Azzi will not ever say her name I just love. I also have this idea that Stephie, when older and knows pretty much everything re her parents history, will continue the she who shall not be named thing in support of her mama. (And Im not entirely discounting the possibility of a bit of real time drama w Olivia that wont help w this whole Azzi grudge).
Wishing you a good start to the week!! -☕️ **
Hi hi lovely I missed you <3
Ah babes that must have gotten lost in my sea of asks because I've been so bad about answering them. It's funny how much has change since whenever you sent that thought because the W has become a revolving door of coaching changes.
I really like the Valks HC choice. She's been very effective with the LVAces and I expect that to continue. Same with the recent news we go today of Tyler Marsh with the Sky. I think LVAces coaching staff in general is so strong and them branching off is good for the league and both the Valks and the Sky with these coaches and a little bit of time for player development should eventually be really good. Ultimately the lawsuit is a front office issue and I don't think these two had much to do with it and so until I see issues in their new respective teams, I don't think we can hold it against them.
LIBERTYYYYYYY. So happy for them and of course props to the Lynx. And honestly thank you to both teams for giving us what I think, despite that one foul, is the greatest W finals we've ever had.
THE THIBAULTS ARE GONE. You were one of the first people I thought of when I saw that news. Honestly I have no idea what to think. I really didn't see it coming and as much as I've done a lot of nepo baby this nepo baby that, I don't necessarily know if this is the right choice but I'll wait to see who they appoint as the head coach to really figure out my thoughts.
Lottery in 2 weeks?? What the actual hell? Like y'all we're likely gonna know where Paige is going before we even see Azzi on the court and that's insane to me.
OOOOH I have some CWBB drama if anyone wants it. Did y'all peep Last-Tear's Poa's shady insta caption she deleted? Her and Sam'yah Smith were a thing and streets are saying maybe she cheated?
Pazzi are being wholesome as always. "Silly girl" - what if I jump off a cliff :)

Another important storytelling skill (at least in my writing process) is learning how to pare away what's not needed. I always start with a basic idea that needs fleshing out. Then after I flesh out several aspects of the story, I need to examine that sprawl and figure out which pieces are the important ones--the ones that support the main plot, character and thematic threads of the story--and then prune away the unnecessary ones that distract from that.
With fairy tale retellings, there's an extra layer to this process. Fairy tales come with certain plot points and iconic images, and you want to include as many of them as possible. But fairy tales are allowed to have stuff happen "just because", while a retelling needs to make all these pieces fit together in a coherent character and thematic arc. There are many ways to adapt different elements, and you need to figure out which approaches allow each element to make the most sense in your story. Your story, unlike the original fairy tale, needs to have a point--a theme or arc that it's highlighting--and the story choices you make need to serve that. If a certain piece doesn't make sense with that arc, it's best to take out or alter that element rather than force it in where it doesn't fit.
Crafting, arranging, and paring away all these pieces is an ongoing and layered process--part sculpting, part jigsaw puzzle. And a retelling has an extra layer of difficulty, because it can be tough to determine which elements are serving the story and which ones you're just shoving in because they're part of the original fairy tale.
"The Goose Girl" can be a difficult story to retell, because it has a lot of iconic elements that don't really connect to the main plotline. Most retellings that try to shove in everything have at least one element that's a poor fit in the storyworld, or gloss over a piece of it by making it metaphorical or whatever. Part of the challenge I set myself was trying to keep all the elements in the story, but in creative ways that didn't break the world and mood I was crafting. I did develop explanations for every element, most of which I rather liked. But I've come to the conclusion that the story will be better served if I pare some of them away to focus on the story that I really want to tell.
So the thing that keeps attracting me back to this story idea is the politics. This story is all about differing ideas of leadership. How should a leader conduct themselves? What actions is a leader justified in taking to preserve power? How do ideals balance with practicalities? The handmaid's ruthless seizure of power seems to have left her the victor, while the real princess's morals leave her powerless. The princess has to decide which actions she is justified and willing to take to get her crown back; she has to decide what kind of leader she is going to be. And these questions are all tangled up with the personal relationships--after such a devastating betrayal from her handmaid, the princess has to decide just how far she is willing to trust this foreign trickster king who's offering help.
You'll notice there's not much magic in that plotline. That doesn't mean there can't be. I've tried weaving in some subtle magical explanations for things like the princess's inability to reveal the truth, or her ability to control the wind. But the more I consider it, the more this worldbuilding seems like a distraction from the very grounded, political, personal plotline I actually care about. It feels like these elements are just tacked on because they exist in the original fairy tale. It feels much more fitting to have cultural or character explanations for most of these elements--at most, some minor magical elements, or hints that there could be magic explanations even if the characters aren't quite sure. This keeps the focus on the choices and characters of these people instead of on the magical elements that are hemming them in. I need to focus on these three central characters--the princess, the handmaid, and the king--and how their differing philosophies interact to draw out the theme and bring about the final resolution. If that means losing a few pieces of the original fairy tale, so be it. What matters is keeping the elements that allow me to tell my story.

"Score!" The boy's joy comes out as a triumphant burst, shown with how he lifts his fists to the sky as if he had won the best price to ever exist. Well, that was basically what had happened — that's how it feels for him.
"I do not mind it at all, sir! Which is to say, it would be an honor to be called that way. Plus, I am pretty well-versed in answering inquiries. It would definitely be a fun endeavor!" Ah, he can't keep the excitement in check, after all. Maybe, he'll have to practice correcting this behavior of his later on.
"Which brings me to an inquiry of my own..." He wavers, eyes glancing away in thought. Maybe, he shouldn't be asking such personal questions to Sephiroth, but... "Have you ever wanted one? A little brother?"
"Mr. Sephiroth... I have a question that I hope does not bring discomfort." There is a brief pause, an attempt to back down, but nevertheless, the boy decides to speak. "You see, while sharing with some of the townsfolk nearby, I was called your... little brother. Wanting to prevent them from feeling embarrassed or uncomfortable, I agreed. Yet, I understand I did not ask for your agreement on the subject. Is it... alright to let others consider us or identify us as siblings? Would that bring some kind of trouble to you?"
Mr. Sephiroth. So formal in ways fellow Shinra "employees" normally aren't. He's aware that he's not speaking with anyone typical, of course, but the formality has him automatically responding with a mild tilt of his head and not much else until--
The phrase "little brother" elicits a surprised blink. Explanation given, it's only a moment later when Sephiroth's straightened spine and "work posture" relax somewhat. Just a bit. He hadn't really thought about it, of course, and it's a little difficult to do a whole lot of thinking about it now. However...
"I don't mind." He admits, surprising himself just the slightest bit. Still, it is the truth. "If anything, I might believe it would cause trouble for you. Some... fans really aren't easily dissuaded in asking questions." To say the least.
Still... Little brother, huh?

hey.. i saw that post.. about.. thunderstruck.. and that chapter.. literally left me as a pile of dust on my bed.. do you wanna.. talk about it.. because i will listen..
Tumblr media
ohohohhehehee…….. spoilers for ch. 23 of ghost story
starting off strong with the storm/water imagery ⛈️ admittedly ch. 1 starts with a storm bc i had a Vision for a very vibes-based chapter that then ofc spiraled into the ghost story you know and love today. then water and specifically storms became the connecting thread for most of the significant moments in the development of john and ghost’s relationship so OF COURSE i went ham. not only the storm raging when they finally admit their feelings (and fuck lol) but also the town names as they get closer and closer to that resolution. it’s a clean slate, a baptism, a rebirth. a reckoning. something magnetic and powerful and chaotic but also completely natural is exactly what the bond between them is, and the added detail of john being terrified of drowning makes it extra juicy delicious
thennn we have to talk about my close personal friend lottie reed!! 💘 i don’t describe her in too much detail but it was important to me that she shared some physical similarities with john. wiry and slim, dark hair, light eyes. it adds a layer of Insanity to his irrationally jealous response to literally everything she does. i had a blast peppering in vague details about ghost’s past with her, but to lay it all out: they met in tumbleweed when ghost was making their name as the ghost rider of new austin and had a very sweet teenage summer romance. lottie was sheltered by her parents and loved the element of danger ghost brought to her life, and ghost was charmed by how clever and genuine lottie was. when lottie’s parents set up her engagement with melvin reed it was partly bc they’d been working on it for a while and partly bc they wanted to keep her away from ghost. lottie tried to convince ghost to run away with her before the wedding, but her dad got there first and offered a sum of cash that ghost took to cut contact and leave lottie and melvin alone. (when ghost fled new austin with the money, they very quickly found themself in the predicament we see in chapter 1.) what i like about their relationship is that however you read ghost’s gender, there’s an element of forbidden romance there. ghost doesn’t get back in touch with lottie until ch. 23, which gave lottie plenty of time to come to terms with what happened and find joy of her own after melvin’s death. he wasn’t cruel, but they weren’t close. ghost is lucky she’s so kind, though, because they’ve been a pretty shit friend/ex lol
last thing i prommy but the devotion and the deliberate choosing between these two makes me craaaazy 😵‍💫 they love each other!! so much!! aaaaahhhh!! when john asks that rhetorical question - it was always gonna be you and me, wasn’t it? - it comes after being so jealous and then taking that jealousy out in every toxic way he can think of when he and ghost go through those towns and sell the horses but it feels so inevitable bc it is. he isn’t asking ghost he’s being almost self-deprecating, bc everything he’s ever done was always just buying time against feelings held for so long but only fully realized recently. god. anyways,,
THANK YOU SO MUCH for following this story and being so kind and giving me license to ramble abt my fav things there’s like a million more but i promise i’ll shut up now 💞💞💞💞

✦ When the letter to Hogwarts arrived she was absolutely thrilled and ready to go ✦ Was sorted into Slytherin without the hat giving much a second glance toward any of the other houses ✦ Got along splendidly with her house mates, fitting in with the usual crowd and while she wasn't a bully due to being quieter at times, certainly hung around the standard group ✦ Lost her mother during her second year as a potential victim of early purist actions but was to disconnected from the person that gave her life to care much about it. It simply became something slumbering under the surface as she moved on with life. Seeing her mother pass on allowed her to see thestrals. ✦ Joined the Slytherin Quidditch team in her third year, playing as a chaser for the team ever since ✦ Made sure the fact that she's a half-blood wasn't known to everyone. Eventually keeping it quiet simply became not talking about it which leaves her amused every time someone mistakes her for a pureblood ✦ Excelled at Potions, Herbology and Defense against the Dark Arts while absolutely hating Divination and struggling with Care for Magical Creatures ✦ During her eight year she lost her father with rumors claiming that it was Death Eaters during the early day. It was too early to know anything for certain and so it was passed off as a tragic accident. It changed how Emmeline viewed the world around her. ✦ Afterward, she started siding with the Order. At first out of anger and a need to take down whoever took her family away but gradually she learned that the world wasn't entirely black and white as she originally thought. She is still a snake, despite it all ✦ Every now and then days come during which she struggles with the choice as she sees those she considered friends still as her friends and family. At times it makes her choice quite odd and view rather twisted ✦ When the time to pick a major came, Emmeline opted for Potions. Always having had an affinity the art of brewing all kinds of concoctions, it seemed like the obvious choise ✦ More recently she's played with the idea of swapping majors to Herbology or doubling down on both, though as she finds it may be the more useful since both align with her interests and work together hand in hand.
Future Plans
Emmeline is currently considering a career with the ministry. While she certainly has a love for herbology and a tendency to delve into the dark arts and other areas she should not be in, curse breaking for the ministry in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement seems the most suited to her liking as it brings her closer to the Dark Arts while allowing her to work with the aurors.
Headcanons (more here)
✦ Emmeline chose the Order after what happened to her father but every now and then struggles with her choice as she feels torn between the world she called her home and the world she's now facing ✦ Her favorite flowers are lavender and tulips, making purple and yellow her favorite colors ✦ Emmeline always has a scent of lavender about her. Not a day goes by when one could go by without picking up the soft touch of the floral scent in the air ✦ Owns a Great Horned Owl called Barnaby that she's had ever since she started her time at Hogwarts. It was an early birthday present from her father ✦ Emmeline hasn't been back to her father's manor ever since she lost him in her seventh year ✦ When Emmeline connects with someone, be it friendship, kinship or love, she becomes someone entirely loyal to them with a fierce need to protect while allowing them their own space. When feelings arise therefore, it is not uncommon for the witch to simply not speak of it at all ✦ For a while after her father's death, Emmeline kept looking into various people around her to see if she could find a connection with those allying with the other side. By now that knowledge is used in part to protect them

I wanted to do at least one semi-detailed right up about Ao Ashi so here it is. Won't lie, what really pulled me to Ao Ashi was originally the main character, Ashito, who reminded me so distinctly of haikyuu's Hinata that I felt compelled to follow him. Hinata's character archetypes is fairly common in anime/manga, especially in sports anime but often, Hinata-esque characters end up paling in comparison to him but Ashito has a certain je ne sais quoi that places him a cut above the rest, enough so that despite the fact that the story covered in the anime is fairly standard, I couldn't help but want to read the manga and keep following the storyline.
Ah, I'm getting ahead of myself. Ao Ashi is a manga about football. It is primarily about Ashito, who is entering his first year of high school and gets to join the prestigious football club, Esperion. It seems fairly standard and its developments build slowly. (I just read up to 395 and we're at least 100 chapters away from an ending; for comparison, hq is 400 ch). But something about this story is soo good and so compelling that it has bewitched me heart and soul. Like I mentioned, Ashito is a wonderful lead (which might be because he's completely my type- headstrong, insane, single-minded, selfish, egotistical- basically Hinata). Some of the other characters also get very fun character arcs- I ADORE Akatsu's and Furuya is at times, also great (if you're familiar with the manga or if you end up reading it, you'll understand that this is a hilarious and probably problematic opinion- Akatsu is Oikawa but pushed up 3 notches in terms of bullying) The football itself, while confusing at parts, is still used and explained in a way that's mostly followable and certainly interesting. It's pretty realistic so if you like realistic sports anime/manga, you'll be fine with it. I really like that it spends a decent chunk of focus on football as a global sport and in comparing different environments and how that affects a player and the style of football and it's very very conscious, from the start of all these things that make a football player and allows them to thrive- or fail. Like the first thing that I found interesting was how in the first 2 episodes of the anime, the primary conflict is economic- that you need money to play football. And the story never lets you forget about that.
It's certainly not flawless. The choices of who gets developed and when is uneven and sometimes I'm left wondering why we have multiple chapters to explain an opponent's backstory right at this moment when there's other things going on. There's bits where I feel disconnected from the team as a whole and their feelings and their connection to each other. And the love story/triangle is fairly standard for the most part, and you'll get annoyed at some point because it's soooo typical and Ashito as a love interest is by far the most annoying aspect of him but the way in which he's difficult and annoying - and what that says about his character- is still interesting to me.
Overall I think it has interesting arcs, a wonderful main character, and the story, if you like it, will just burrow itself under your skin. It itches a lot of the same spots that hq does in my brain and if you follow me for hq content, then I'll confidently bet that you'll like Ao Ashi. (final disclaimer that it's not uh- hmm, as perfect as haikyuu? If you've read any hq meta that i've posted, then i'm always talking about how everything in haikyuu is always perfectly connected, you can look at anything from the end and see the threads that lead to it, it has perfect foreshadowing for the most part and I wouldn't say that Ao Ashi has this, but regardless it's still very very good)

Crafting Unforgettable Film Characters: Essential Tips for Filmmakers
Developing unforgettable film characters is a fundamental component of filmmaking, crucial for both artistic and audience success. This guide explores key areas of film production, audience engagement, and indie filmmaking, with a particular focus on filmmakers in New Jersey and New York. It offers practical insights, tips, and examples to assist industry professionals in navigating and thriving in their domain.
Film Production
Constructing engaging characters starts with strong development. Let's delve into some core elements of character creation in film production.
Character Development
Understand Your Character's Backstory
Grasping a character's history is critical for authenticity. Filmmakers should document their character's backstory to ensure consistency and depth. For instance, in "The Pursuit of Happyness," Chris Gardner's past drives his actions and choices, making his character more relatable and compelling.
Show, Don’t Tell
Instead of directly stating a character's traits, reveal them through actions, dialogue, and reactions. This method fosters a deeper connection with the audience. For example, the Joker in "The Dark Knight" is characterized through his actions and various, conflicting backstories, which keeps the audience invested and intrigued.
Embrace Flaws and Relatability
Perfect characters are easily forgotten. Embrace flaws and vulnerabilities to make characters more human and relatable. This strategy adds complexity and depth, as observed in "Phantom Thread," where Daniel Day-Lewis's character's obsession with his craft leads to his downfall.
Character Arcs
Character arcs are equally crucial in making characters memorable. Here’s how they can be crafted effectively:
Clear Goals and Motivations
Memorable characters have clear goals and motivations driving their actions. These objectives support the plot and inform the character's decisions and choices. For example, in "The Fabelmans," the main character's passion for filmmaking fuels his journey, making it compelling and inspiring.
Develop Unique Voices
Provide each character with a unique voice and manner of speaking that reflect their personality, background, and experiences. This differentiation helps characters stand out and enriches the storytelling. For example, in "The Lord of the Rings," the distinct speaking styles of characters like Sam and Frodo emphasize their social status and relationship.
Audience Engagement
Establishing emotional connections is key to engaging the audience. Various techniques can be employed to achieve this:
Creating Emotional Connections
Establish Relationships and Dynamics
Characters influence and interact with others. Exploring these dynamics enriches the narrative and offers opportunities for character growth. In films like "School of Rock," the relationships between characters are central to the story, making it engaging and memorable.
Build Intrigue
Leaving certain aspects of a character's past or motivations mysterious can create intrigue and keep the audience hooked. The Joker’s character in "The Dark Knight" is a perfect example, with his backstory revealed in fragments, maintaining audience curiosity.
Audience Connection
Authentic character reactions greatly enhance audience connection:
Make Characters React Authentically
Characters should react in ways true to their personality and history. This authenticity helps create a deeper bond with the audience. For instance, if a character with a past addiction walks past a casino, their reaction should reflect their struggle, making the scene more believable and engaging.
Indie Filmmaking
Indie filmmaking often has budget limitations. However, focusing on character development can make indie films stand out:
Character Development on a Budget
Emphasize Character Depth
Indie filmmakers often face resource constraints, but focusing on character depth can distinguish their films. Films like "Pig" and "Chef" feature characters who are deeply passionate about their craft, making the story compelling despite budget limitations.
Utilize Visual Cues
Visual cues can help create memorable characters, especially in indie films with restricted resources. Providing each character with a defining visual cue can instantly remind the audience who they are, as suggested in tips for creating unforgettable characters.
New Jersey and New York Filmmakers
Filmmakers from these areas have made significant contributions to memorable movie characters. Here are some examples:
Iconic Characters from the Region
Examples from Local Filmmakers
Filmmakers from New Jersey and New York have crafted iconic characters that resonate with audiences. For instance, the characters in "The Fabelmans" by Steven Spielberg, who has ties to New York, are deeply passionate and motivational, highlighting the importance of character development.
Advice from Local Screenwriters
Screenwriters from the region stress the importance of knowing your character inside out. This includes understanding their backstory, motivations, fears, and desires. For example, a screenwriter may delve into the character's personality, quirks, and emotional journey to create a more authentic and multi-dimensional character.
Actionable Insights and Tips
Understand Your Character's Past: Be aware of the history that shapes your character today. This aids in creating authentic and relatable characters.
Show, Don’t Tell: Reveal character traits through actions, dialogue, and reactions rather than direct statements.
Embrace Flaws: Welcome flaws and vulnerabilities to add depth and complexity to your characters.
Develop Unique Voices: Give each character a unique voice and manner of speaking to distinguish them and enrich the storytelling.
Establish Relationships: Explore the dynamics between characters to add richness to the narrative and promote character growth.
Build Intrigue: Keep some aspects of a character's past or motivations mysterious to create intrigue and keep the audience engaged.
Utilize Visual Cues: Provide each character with a defining visual cue to make them memorable, especially in indie films with limited resources.
Creating memorable film characters is a multifaceted process that involves deep character development, authentic reactions, and engaging storytelling. By understanding a character's backstory, making them flawed and relatable, and establishing strong relationships, filmmakers can create characters that resonate with audiences. Whether in mainstream film production or indie filmmaking, these principles are crucial for achieving both artistic and audience success.

Broken Dreams and Wild Hearts
Ch 4-Lying, Cheating, Dealing, and  Stay the F* Away from My Daughter
Dedria stared at the stone wall, gazing at the boundary lines marked by the posts from the survey that marked her property. She sighed deeply, feeling the anger and frustration bubbling inside her. She couldn't help but feel angry by the numerous mistakes made by the contractors, architects, lawyers, land developers, and real estate agents involved in the project. Despite all the errors, she was the only one getting screwed over; She glanced at the stone wall, realizing it would have to come down and be brought inward by one hundred feet.  Dedria's frustration grew even more when she thought about the consequences of moving the stone wall. It was a clear example of how one person's negligence and incompetence could have far-reaching implications for others.
As she approached the boundary lines, she couldn’t help but smile; she had owned it for six years without any disputes.  She was eager to expand Ice Castles and had ordered a property assessment to enable her to proceed. Dedria considered the possibility of building on the other side of the property line, regardless of the findings of the assessment.  She felt excitement and anticipation; it was just wooded, and the only ones who knew the truth were her and her team. Nobody complained that she had breached their property and had to get off it. Dedria quickly pulled out flags, walked towards the gate, and admired the breathtaking view of the surrounding woods.
She couldn't help but envision the magnificent Ice Castles, the cabins she wanted to build for the new business to introduce the product she and the boys had developed. Dedria had always been a dreamer; this project was her most significant. She knew the challenges ahead but was ready to face them head-on. The property assessment would provide valuable information, but Dedria was confident in her team's ability to overcome any possible obstacles.
"Knock down the wall and start work on the new cabins immediately!" Dedria instructed her team, her smile reflecting her eagerness to see the project come to life. She didn't consider the consequences that might arise from her impulsive decision. Dedria stared at the stone wall, gazing at the boundary lines.

Celestia was walking down the street when she collided with a solid mass moving at a high rate of speed. She felt the sensation of a winter day, and her breath was momentarily stolen from her. She let out a scream of terror and surprise as she felt her body spiral downward. A feeling of warmth and comfort spread over her as his arms wrapped around her, and they both started to fall. She looked into his silver eyes; this was the handsome, dark-haired stranger she had seen in a vision once before. She could feel his fears, worries, and concerns the minute they made skin contact; it was overwhelming.
As they slowly fell, she could sense his vulnerability and the weight of his past. It appeared that an invisible thread that had brought them together, in this moment, had entwined their souls. The wind whipped against their faces, the rush of adrenaline coursing through their veins, and yet, amidst the chaos, there was an undeniable sense of peace. She was aware deep down that this encounter wasn't just a coincidence but a meeting that fate had planned.
“Quinn?” The man's voice shook as he called out her daughter's name, causing Celestia's heart to race with fear and worry. She shoved him away with a fierce glare, feeling anger and frustration. She knew a protector was coming for Quinn and her. Celestia was sure it was not this guy; she was sure she would have a feeling when her daughter’s protector showed up. Who was he, and what did he want?
As Celestia confronted the man, her mind raced with questions. Who was he, and what did he want with her daughter? She couldn't shake the feeling that he was somehow connected to the protection she had sensed was coming. However, his presence also filled her with unease and skepticism. Celestia needed answers, and she was determined to get them.
She stood tall; her gaze steady as she assessed the man before her. His features were shrouded in mystery, and his eyes were piercing and intense. Celestia could sense a power emanating from him, a familiar and foreign force. As she stepped closer, her heart pounded in her chest, a mix of fear and determination fueling her every move.
“Stay the fuck away from my daughter!”
Celestia stood up, her mind racing with a million thoughts, as she ran down the street towards her car. She needed to talk to Shyleigh to get some answers and figure out what was happening.
XXX
Kellen watched her runaway from him; he smiled at her words. He wanted to go after her, but his training as a soldier kept him from chasing her down; he knew it would only spook her more. She is connected to Quinn; he needs to find this little girl. He closed his eyes, trying to find the connection again, but he found nothing.
Disappointed, Kellen opened his eyes and let out a frustrated sigh. His bond with the little girl vanished, leaving him unsettled and unsure of his next move. Knowing that she held the key to learning Quinn's whereabouts increased his desire to find her. As he stood there, lost in thought, a sudden realization struck him—perhaps he needed to approach this situation from a different angle.
He closed his eyes, visualizing the little girl and the meadow.
“Come on, Quinn, my name is Kellen. Are you safe?” Kellen called out gently, using his mind. He hoped to receive some reassurance that she was safe and unharmed. He could only hear silence. With every fiber of his being, he wished for her safety and vowed to protect her from whatever danger she might face.
He jumped when a hand slapped him on the back and heard a hardy laugh fill his ears. “I see women are still falling at your feet!” His heart raced as he turned to face Aden, a mischievous grin spreading across his face.
"Well, you know how it is," he replied, trying to conceal his embarrassment. "Some things never change." Kellen rolled his eyes, shaking his head.
"Yep, and they take off running in the other direction!” Drake, the SGT. of Arms, laughed.
Kellen chuckled, playfully punching Drake on the shoulder. "Oh, come on now, Drake. You know you're just jealous." Aden joined in on the laughter, slapping Kellen on the back again.
"Jealousy is an understatement. You've always had that charm, my friend." Kellen smirked, knowing his friends were teasing him but secretly enjoying the attention. As they continued to joke and laugh, Kellen couldn't help but feel grateful for the camaraderie he had found within this tight-knit group.
.
Kellen loved these moments with his friends, where they could let loose and banter with one another. The teasing and laughter brought a sense of belonging, reminding him of the strong bond they had formed over the years. As they rode towards the clubhouse, Kellen couldn't help but reflect on how lucky he was to have found such loyal companions who always had his back in good times and when facing challenges.
The three rode off towards the clubhouse, needing their weekly meeting to discuss issues with a local business. There was a pressing matter of a local brothel owner intruding on land that was not theirs and possibly selling drugs in Hwen. They needed to discuss a plan to convince the owners of Ice Castles not to sell drugs and to respect the boundaries of their community. Kellen had always admired his friends' dedication to justice and unwavering determination to protect their town. As they approached the clubhouse, Kellen's mind began to race with ideas and strategies, eager to contribute to the cause. He knew their collective strength and unity would be crucial in dealing with such a delicate situation. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation inside the dimly lit room adorned with posters and maps. The familiar scent of coffee and the sound of hushed whispers added to the sense of urgency in the air. Kellen took a deep breath, ready to share his insights and play his part in preserving the harmony of Hwen.

kaiser 3rd goal trutherism “evidence” divided by sections like
—v.spain-v.italy mirroring and parallels
—v.england-v.italy contrasts and parallels
—kaiser story/chara development culmination (intermediate?)
—kaiser thematic development endpoint
—v.italy themes + rules favoring kaiser
—isagi-kaiser narrative role-reversal

the noa-kaiser conspiracy is connected to several of these points but i can’t isolate it into its own specific thing which makes me sad. in any case this explains(?) my evolution from kaiserbeliever into kaisertruther then back into kaiserbeliever

I was reading through Deathly Hallows and this bit reminded me of this thread:
‘I saw him find out about the cup, I - I was in his head, he’s' - Harry remembered the killings, ‘he’s seriously angry, and scared too, he can’t understand how we knew, and now he’s going to check the others are safe, the ring first. He thinks the Hogwarts one is safest, because Snape’s there, because it’ll be so hard not to be seen getting in, I think he’ll check that one last, but he could still be there within hours -'
-Deathly Hallows, Ch. 27
Harry isn't just sharing Voldemort's mind in these moments, he's reading his thoughts and feelings. To give this some extra context:
His scar burned, but he was master of the pain; he felt it, yet was apart from it. He had learned control at last, learned to shut his mind to Voldemort, the very thing Dumbledore had wanted him to learn from Snape. Just as Voldemort had not been able to possess Harry while Harry was consumed with grief for Sirius, so his thoughts could not penetrate Harry now, while he mourned Dobby. Grief, it seemed, drove Voldemort out … though Dumbledore, of course, would have said that it was love …
-Deathly Hallows, Ch. 24
It's also through controlling his own emotions that Harry is able to shut Voldemort out and gain control over his own mind.
Even though we know that Harry can see into Voldemort's thoughts because of their connection through the Horcrux in Harry, what's happening is nevertheless Legilimency, albeit involuntary (which is why Snape tried to teach him Occlumency a few years earlier). The way Harry's experiences in Deathly Hallows (when he finally learns to shut Voldemort's thoughts out or let them in at will) is an insight into how Legilimency works and I think underlines all you said in your last reblog.
Harry doesn't just see what Voldemort sees in his mind, he understands his emotions. He can give Voldemort's thoughts context and extract useful information as a result. We don't actually see Harry close his mind to Voldemort, or at least we don't know if he would be able to do so effectively (and by this point Voldemort has learned that it is unwise for him to inhabit Harry's mind). Instead, what we see is Harry develop the ability to choose whether or not to visit Voldemort's thoughts when that connection is open. Interestingly, just as it's important to understand and interpret another's emotions for Legilimency to be useful, it's also key to master one's own feelings in order to control one's own ability to read another's thoughts. We know this already from Snape in OoTP, but we see how it works in practice in this chapter from DH.
Harry's grief overwhelms him, and in order to function, let alone continue his mission, he has to compartmentalize. Though we can only infer Snape's experiences from the text, there's a reasonable comparison that can be made. Snape is described as a twitchy, awkward teen, nothing at all like the calculating man we see him as when he's a professor who's so controlled that his emotions are expressed only in intense outbursts when he's triggered. Presumably he also learned to compartmentalize through his grief for his murdered childhood friend, and he too had a mission to help him focus his mind, ie. protecting her son. Snape is a character who's driven by grief, and he's also the character who is best at Legilimency and Occlumency as far as we see. This makes sense if you look at how important emotions are to Legili/Occlumency, and consider what an intense and consuming emotion grief can be. If one can master feelings of such magnitude, ie. their own mind, then one can master another's.
Legilimency & Occlumency & Emotion
i was reading something somewhere (possibly on my binge of metas last night, but who knows) that Snape was very talented at Occlumency, but just about average at Legilimency - but I respectfully disagree, and here's a whole (3k word) accidental ramble about it, which started as an observation and devolved into how I think Legilimency/Occlumency works in the context of Snape and Voldemort, and why I interpret it differently than it being (entirely) magical dissociation and actually quite an emotion-based skill once it's more complex TLDR: I've often seen Occlumency described/conceptualised as a "shield" or some kind of suppressed emotionless state, but I discovered upon writing this that I think it can be quite a bit more complex and emotional, actually - just like Snape <3
Snape's Talents
The idea that got me rambling today went something like "Draco, who only had a handful of lessons from Bellatrix, was able to keep Snape out of his mind using Occlumency - so Snape can't have been a very good Legilimens, or Occlumency was easy to do"
And I do agree that Snape was probably better at Occlumency than Legilimency by sheer quantity of practice alone - and also that, outside of using it on Harry (and Draco) when they were up to mischief, and Snape likely wishing he could use it to work out what Dumbledore was hiding from him, Snape had no desire to see, hear, interpret or otherwise get the gist of what anyone at Hogwarts was thinking - but especially not a bunch of pubescent students, nor colleagues who liked him on a surface level but obviously were not close enough to think Something Was Up when he killed Dumbledore (which, fair in some ways, unfair in others, but I digress)
[side note: Snape can't have just not used Occlumency for over a decade before Voldemort's return, so I like to think of him and Dumbledore practicing to keep his skills sharp - although I expect that would be another 'fun' way for Dumbledore to hold Snape in chains which would make for an interesting fic]
I suspect that if Snape had chosen to, he could've invaded Draco's mind in that scene, broken through whatever defenses Draco used - but that's not a very Snape thing to do to a student, and especially not one he knows well, was a family friend of, has closely seen grow up, and probably has a soft spot for. It's very reminiscent of his conversation with Narcissa, to me. Throughout that entire conversation with Draco, Snape was trying to comfort Draco, empathise with him, get Draco to trust him, confide in him, offer support to Draco whether he wanted it or not - not further alienate him to a point where Snape couldn't help. And besides, invading Draco's mind aggressively doesn't sit very well with his vow "to the best of your ability, protect him from harm".
And as for Harry's lessons, Harry was using spells - which Snape seemed surprised, interested, and almost impressed to learn that were effective against Legilimency, which isn't surprising in itself as it's not a widely used area of magic. And since Harry had no idea that Snape (and probably Dumbledore) were 'reading his mind' for years before he learnt about Legi/Occlumency, I don't expect many people would know if Snape used it, or put up a fight using those methods - other Death Eaters probably stuck to Occluding, because it would hardly garner any favour if they cast a stinging hex or Protego at Voldemort or in a DE meeting Which brings me back to my other point as well, which was that "Occlumency possibly wasn't difficult to do". On a rudimentary level that might be true (at least insofar as any advanced magic was difficult to do - Harry was actually quite talented, e.g. casting a corporeal patronus at 13/14 or whatever, and Draco could do it after a few lessons with Bellatrix). Harry learnt almost despite Snape, because he didn't take instruction from him well and because Snape is (intentionally) abrasive in lessons (which I could go on about, since Snape couldn't really be nice to Harry when Voldemort was possibly looking through harry's eyes at any given moment - and as other metas have pointed out was another layer to Snape's rage when Harry looked at his memories). But Snape could do it without a wand, without an incantation, so he was reasonably skilled - imagine casting a full body Patronus or other impressive spell with neither a wand nor an incantation
Also we don't know precisely how long Draco had lessons for, it might have been loads and he was actually pretty good, or it might have been 3 and he was awful. But unlike Snape, who is not the greatest Legilimens of all time (that's apparently Voldemort?), it was glaringly obvious to him that Draco was using Occlumency - Snape had him sussed in like 3 seconds, and chose not to go any further for the reasons I outlined above - which interestingly he did not do with Harry, when faced with finding out where Harry learnt Sectumsempra (but at that point both Snape and Draco's life had been on the line - if Draco dies, presumably so does Snape?)
Which brings me back to Snape... How I think Legilimency/Occlumency works (sometimes)
You have no subtlety The mind is a complex and many-layered thing It is true, however, that those who have mastered Legilimency are able, under certain conditions, to delve into the minds of their victims and to interpret their findings correctly. The Dark Lord, for instance, almost always knows when somebody is lying to him. Only those skilled at Occlumency are able to shut down those feelings and memories that contradict the lie, and so utter falsehoods in [Voldemort's] presence without detection.
There's a lot to take in there, and also pretty ballsy to say to Voldemort-by-proxy (Harry), which might reduce the validity of my idea that Snape didn't want to be nice to Harry during their lessons in case Voldemort was watching, since Snape's pretty happy to give Voldemort (and the reader, more likely) a complete insight into what he's himself doing... although I expect that Voldemort has considered this, and also doesn't recognise the limits of his own power - or the extent of Snape's.
I also wonder whether the 'certain conditions' are something simple, like eye contact being made or the spell being cast, or whether there's something to the mental state of the 'caster' at the time as well, like there is with Occlumency walls/shields and being calm and empty-headed, or whether the conditions is the Occluder themselves presenting (or not presenting) some alternative things to interpret. One of the wizarding world (I think) pages says Snape trained a 'slight natural ability', so that makes me wonder more, as well, but i digress.
But my second point is this: Snape's talents weren't Occluding by total shutdown, or Occlumency 'shields' which always now irk me in fanfiction (this I'm definitely drawing from another meta but I have no idea where, so... apologies). Snape wasn't throwing up a wall in front of entire memories or thoughts, for the most part. Although I expect that between the Pensieve and Draco's example use of Occlumency, that was sometimes a function (e.g. some of the things Dumbledore told Snape to pass along, he'd have to entirely block out, alter, or otherwise adapt those memories to make it look as though Snape had passed information along of his own volition against Dumbledore's orders, or hide the fact that he'd helped Dumbledore when he was supposed to be helping Voldemort, etc).
So inkeeping with my own questionable metaphor, where Draco threw up a wall - metaphorically crumbling, last-minute, cowboy builder Occlumency where the wall would hold but you could see it very clearly and obviously; where with a lesser Occlumens the wall was nice enough, but you could see where the paint job didn't quite match up and the plastering wasn't done very evenly; Snape had the whole house set up so that you didn't know the wall wasn't there from the start, and probably had a few artfully chosen scuffs to make it seem real, or it was some kind of trapdoor under the carpet. (okay the metaphor died, but I've been watching a lot of remodelling shows lately, you get the point if you've read this far)
In another metaphor I imagine detecting a lie to be like running your fingertips along a smooth surface and finding a lip or a bump - you could then, pick at it, poke at it, tear it open. You could sense that something was being hidden, or withheld. But there were no lips or snags in Snape's thoughts; potentially Voldemort could simply not detect them, not even when he searched him openly, repeatedly, full eye contact, at the table at Malfoy Manor. Snape welcomed Voldemort into his (it's just occurred to me, but "mind palace") and Voldemort repeatedly, for years, could not tell that anything was amiss, and presumably Voldemort did this with much more ferocity (and skill) than Snape looking at Harry for 2 seconds and immediately summoning Harry's mental image of the Prince's copy of Advanced Potions Making
But it can't be down to detection alone. There's also a level of interpretation to Legilimency. So here I'm focusing on a more interesting aspect to me, which is how emotion is used in Legilimency/Occlumency. Obviously, Snape isn't Occluding all the time, and as much as I adore Alan Rickman, book!Snape was naturally a total petty, stuttering mess (love him for it) who only wishes he had Alan Rickman's gravitas, and could on occasion emulate it.
I told you to empty yourself of emotion! … Fools who wear their hearts proudly on their sleeves, who cannot control their emotions, who wallow in sad memories and allow themselves to be provoked this easily — weak people, in other words — they stand no chance against his powers!
I think this quote is interesting for many reasons I probably won't be able to connect properly and are in no particular order beyond how I thought of them
Snape is emotional here when he says it, he's angry, annoyed, upset, and it's an honest feeling, and he's obviously not devoid of emotion but can still Occlude Harry
Snape is an emotional person, much as he tries to pretend not to be, and can still Occlude Voldemort just fine even on the night he thinks he's marching to his death at the end of GoF
Much like how many other kinds of magic require lots of study and a strong emotion/will/conscious thought at the start, perhaps it become easier with experience to the point where this advice is not essential (e.g. kind of like driving, I no longer have to think about changing gears like I did as a Learner)
Snape is also talking about himself here, indicative of Snape's worldview where showing 'weak' emotions is the problem - soft emotions, vulnerability, "never tell".
"Provoke" is exactly what Voldemort does to Harry
This is Occlumency 101; Snape's teaching Harry the most basic of Occlumency - to compartmentalise, to block someone out, to throw up that shoddy but sturdy-enough wall for Voldemort to come up against, like Draco did to Snape. Harry's anger and emotion is a weakness in this basic Occlumency lesson, where Voldemort is trying to look through Harry and/or trick/provoke him; thus, the wall.
But this probably isn't the kind of Legilimency Voldemort would use on Snape (which is to see if he's lying, if his information is real, if his values are aligned, etc), and it probably isn't the kind of Occlumency Snape was doing in return, to lie or deflect suspicion or ingratiate himself. In fact, throwing up a wall is the opposite of what Snape does with Voldemort; Snape lets him in, lets him stare him down in front of an audience, all the while showing Voldemort what he wants to see. I think as well there's an element of a Legilimens 'grasping' for something, searching, "provoking", like how Snape 'grasped' for Harry's memories of Advanced Potions Making, how Voldemort appears to search Snape at Malfoy Manor - so if all Snape presents is a memory, empty, devoid of any complexity, Voldemort would question it.
In my interpretation, when Occluding, Snape displays a different type of emotional control; Complex Occlumency means you control your emotions, yes, but not block them off - Snape takes his emotions where they need to go, makes them do what they need to do, to support the interpretation he wants Voldemort to reach. He chooses to some extent what Voldemort sees if he lies outright or omits details (a well made wall, basic Occlumency), and chooses how to present it (complex Occlumency). And he does it with subtlety; he doesn't often outright lie, and there's a lot left to interpretation - in both Snape's speech (with Bellatrix) and his actions throughout the books, and presumably his Occlumency.
So I suggest that Snape, in a situation with Voldemort, must be able to "lift up" or "lean into" an alternative emotion for interpretation - the decoration around the wall, the interior design, if you will. For example, Snape couldn't tell Voldemort that he desired Lily, in a total absence of any feelings at all, without it coming across as false and thus easily detectable as a lie. And you know that when a young Snape, who's hardly made a name for himself (Snape's likely never killed, at least, and isn't especially memorable to anyone in Azkaban and is last named by Karkaroff, and other things I won't go into here) outside of overhearing half a prophecy begs for a Mudblood Order member who's the mother of Voldemort's downfall who's thrice defied him to be spared, you can bet that Voldemort will want to thoroughly find out why, so...
To me this suggests that there was a level of desire there that Snape could 'lean into', whether that desire be for Lily or someone else he found desirable to act as a kind of substitute - though given that Legilimency seems to work on mental images and memories at least in part, a memory where he desired Lily would've been useful. And I'm just using that as an example, because Voldemort would also presumably at some stage have interrogated what Snape thought of Dumbledore and Harry, and Snape would've had to lean into feelings of hatred and loathing - which he'd manage just fine for Harry, but Snape would have leant into his feelings after Dumbledore silenced him after nearly getting eaten by a werewolf and again freeing Sirius in PoA, but I digress
When Harry finally learns Occlumency (by his own admission) in the wake of Dobby's death, it's grief that helps him master it - which, for me personally, is not a detached, clear-headed feeling in any sense. It's visceral, emotional, and painful; all-consuming. It's love/grief/loss/strong loving emotion that forces Voldemort out, after he loses Sirius and again when he loses Dobby. But it's a contrast to the emotions Voldemort uses of Harry's to draw Harry out, via his fears for Sirius. But with grief, Harry's dived headfirst into feeling what Voldemort doesn't want to feel (unlike the anger), to keep Voldemort out of his mind. Whereas Snape would do the opposite, and dive right in to the feelings Voldemort would want to sense - to the exclusion of others. Would Voldemort even think to search for Snape's love for Lily, if he was first presented with something more visceral, with more negative connotations, like desire or jealousy, hurt or betrayal? These are the emotions Voldemort thrives on and can exploit, that he's familiar with, that he understands. In the context then of 'grasping' that's how I think Snape leads Voldemort down a path of believing him - by bringing honest 'negative' emotions to the fore that Voldemort understands.
this is really where I think skilled Occlumency differs from dissociation or wall-building. I think Snape would simultaneously have to dampen his 'lie' feelings and to raise the volume on the 'fitting' feelings for his chosen interpretation. My interpretation of this all stems from my experience of writing, of getting lost in music, in using those activities to "wallow" in certain feelings. Snape does not present Voldemort with his true feelings, but they are real feelings. So in that way, I feel Snape was like an artist or writer; he felt deeply, he felt conflictingly, and dived headfirst into those wells of emotion when he needed to - diving so deeply that it cuts off and hides the conflicting evidence. I feel that when I'm writing, when I'm listening to music, when I'm wallowing. And I feel a lot of sympathy for Snape, because it can feel like a real whiplash when you're midway through writing an intense scene or listening to some excellent music that really fills you up with something, it can take you to some dark places, and it's quite shocking somehow when abruptly interrupted - which would be what his life was constantly like after Voldemort's return, leaning into and shying away from/shutting down emotions and memories he didn't necessarily feel whenever he was called, and then having to return to work or meetings in that headspace, where everything feels out of touch and you're in internal turmoil. (Granted, I can snap out of it because the music or the writing is neither here nor there, really, but he'd be doing it with his own life experiences, with his own life on the line, and to repay a debt of guilt - there's a lot more emotional baggage there, and even more once Dumbledore died). And I think it would take its toll in other ways, too, which leads me to Lily...
Far from some people's cries that possessive or obsessive attraction or desire is some huge moral failing, I'd argue that you'll find a level of it in most teenagers and indeed the regular spectrum of human emotion - I know I've certainly experienced feelings of intense jealousy and whatever 'Snaters' (I'm not a massive fan of the term, but as a shorthand) accuse Snape of, whether I acted on it or not. So I'd suggest that Snape 'leant into' that for the sake of being on the receiving end of Voldemort's Legilimency. Whether Snape regularly, or actually, felt those emotions of his own free will or not is hard to say - since there's no actual evidence he did act possessive or jealous beyond the normal teenager level (and that's without addressing the fact that we didn't know how he would've ended the sentence "I won't let you -"). And I'd also go as far as to say that Snape probably, truly, had some awful thoughts (don't we all?) and so he was able to lean into some very dark and gloomy nooks and crannies of his mind, the parts we're told healthy people steer clear of acting on but also undoubtedly experience (jealousy, possession, rage, bitterness) in much the same way as a writer, artist, or musician might, to make his 'lies' and the stories he told more 'truthful' - which was why Voldemort trusted him so much.
TLDR: Snape's a man of many contraditions and very much emotional depth, and he manipulated his own emotions (likely to the detriment of his mental health) for years. But just as I, a fanfic writer, can vicariously experience the bitter resentment for a person who doesn't love me, can imagine a world where he can think those thoughts, embody them, and still not take them on as part of his identity.
anyway i don't have a conclusion, I just had thoughts
[Side note not strictly related to ANY of the above: I find it interesting as well that Voldemort's skill is apparently specifically in working out whether people are lying to him, suggesting that you could specialise even further into different aspects of behaviour. But people do lie to Voldemort (Narcissa, Snape, off the top of my head, but there's no indication of Voldemort using Legilimency on Narcissa in that moment where Harry lives - Voldemort was too elated, once again caught up in his own glory). [side side note: Harry's treatment after his 'death' does make me wonder, briefly, about Snape's own treatment when he returned at the end of GoF - public torture and humiliation, an opportunity for the other DEs to turn on one of their own to 'increase their own standing' in Voldemort's eyes, crucio to weaken Snape's defences, to check that his information and loyalty true? i get the impression that Snape shared his information with Voldemort privately, given that Bellatrix didn't seem to know much about Snape's return, but who's to say there wasn't some 'fun' beforehand, or at other points during his time as spy]

Continued from here @sadistic-second
It didn’t take too long to register a reaction. Honestly, Chadley had expected for the other to raise his voice, yet not as much as he had. Maybe he bit too hard, he wondered. But, of course, once the other shoved him away, his mouth opened a bit wider as he let go and gave two steps back.
Tumblr media
“There are many rumors about you, Mr. Reno. One of those was that you are as masochistic as you are sadistic. I wanted to confirm this by my own experimentation, so I conducted this test. How do you feel? I can see a hint of impression, but is there anything else you are experiencing?” Chadley addressed him calmly, as if he had just conducted a normal checkup. In truth, that’s what he thought he was doing.
“Oh! And I see you are on your way to eat something. The line has been taking especially long today, isn’t that so?” he made small talk while awaiting for the data contained on the reply he expected to receive soon.
