holy fuck okay. holy shit. severance said what if the tragedy was kindness. because innie mark did the kindest thing he could. he went back for her. he got gemma out safely. he ushered her out the door he looked at her through the glass he saw that she was alive and free. but walking out the door is killing yourself and killing the woman you love. so you turn around and you take her hand and you run and you don't kiss her in front of your outie's wife but she's safe! you did what your outie fucking asked even after he treated you like shit! and you just want ten more minutes for yourself because you're a person too. what if orpheus forgot who eurydice was and still saved her but then he stayed behind. what if orpheus saved eurydice and then when they stepped out of the underworld they swapped roles. what if eurydice was the hero all along and what if she had to watch orpheus go back into hell. i'm going to be sick

i understand why people say gemma is a non-character or something along those lines but i believe it’s actually much worse than that, because we know things about her. we know how ms casey acts and talks and moves and there must be some gemma in there. we know she was also a teacher. we know she did crafts. we know she was allergic to nutmeg and liked other people’s dogs and thought cardigans looked ridiculous and when she sneezed, she always sneezed twice. we know she and mark went on hikes with devon and ricken. we know she was nice and supportive to ricken and had conversations with him about his ideas and was grateful for his throat singing dedicated to her, but she did still laugh at it with mark. we know what her loss did to mark, devon and ricken. we know that devon and ricken wanted to name their child after her, but mark didn’t agree. we know she made mark wonderful. we know a bunch of things about her and her presence in and effect on people’s lives, and we know all of it through the people who love her and lost her. and that is so much worse than her just not being there.

Do you not remember when Devon had to remind Mark that Gemma was her family too!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do you not remember the scene where Devon offered Gemma alcohol and the excitement and joy and affection that was in that brief interaction alone!!!!! Do you not remember how we were told in season one how seemingly healthy of a sibling/sibling-in-law relationship Mark, Gemma, Devon, and Ricken had where they would regularly go on hikes and have dinner together and were very involved and invested in each other's lives!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you not recall how Gemma was clearly going to a gathering of people, presumably friends, on her own, the night Lumon kidnapped her!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark was unable to grieve on the "Mark can't grieve" show!!! Are you so shocked????

Have you never experienced grief in a way that impacts your romantic relationship???? I have. Not regarding fertility, but grief operates in similar ways regardless of the source and Mark and Gemma's clear conflict of "I want to avoid the grief, if this is making you unhappy let's just stop!" and "I want to put these emotions on the table can we please just talk about it!" is sooooooooo exceedingly common and real. I saw bits of my own experiences and the experiences I've seen in others I know in real life in them both.

Sometimes it's not exploitation. Sometimes it's just people with conflicting emotional states that begin to create tears in the seams of a relationship in spite of the ways those people clearly care for each other and want a relationship together.

That's literally the uncomfortable situation, the distressing situation, that Lumon is trying to remove from people's lives. The pain, the miscommunication, the grief. We're being shown that life is hard, and messy, and uncomfortable, and sad, and how Lumon thinks they can simultaneously create life and strip life of those things.

The whole point!!!!!!! is that they still love each other despite the grief!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That they are willing to fight through the literal hell of the testing and severed floors and reintegration to get back to each other!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thing that gets me about severance is that it's a horror story from both sides

Imagine existing numbing yourself to every mildly unpleasant experience, surgically removing every emotion that you don't want to deal with, sanitizing your own life

And imagine only having those experiences, existing only to perform the social duties another version of yourself didn't want to deal with, living in a body that is not really yours, being forbidden from experiencing complexity

They're both victims to the same tragedy, that you can't possibly be whole without both
