Dickson and Shulk's dynamic in Xenoblade 1 is honestly one of my favorite parts about the game. Dickson takes in Shulk to help groom him into becoming Zanza's new vessel, it wasn't out of love. Regardless of that he raised Shulk pretty well.

Whether it was intentional or not, the game implies Dickson did genuinely grow to love Shulk as a son but feels his higher calling and role is more important. Despite that he guides Shulk throughout the game until he has to reveal his true intentions and form.

Dickson and Shulk's dynamic is so complex and interesting. Boiling it down to just, 'Dickson used Shulk' ruins the complexity of the dynamic and it's just really interesting and gets me emotionally when you look at the full picture.

dickson never planned on dating anyone. perhaps to further his goals and use you, but he never expected to actually take a liking to you

dickson wouldn't use the word ‘love’ to describe how he feels about you. he's too old to be all sappy like that!

but he does have a certain fondness for you and he quite enjoys your company

he's not the type to take you out on any romantic dates, but sometimes he'll feel like taking you somewhere on bionis, dragging you along, without even telling you the destination

he's happy you never complain and even happier that you know when to speak and when to shut up. he doesn't like people who never stop talking, but he doesn't enjoy having to carry a conversation either

dickson gets teased about dating you from dunban and even mumkhar! because despite acting like he doesn't love you, they can see that he clearly does…

dickson never tells you about who he really is. he knows that eventually, it'll come out either way. but he tells himself that even if you find out and hate him for who he is, he'll endure it

though when that moment does come around, perhaps he won't think that way anymore…

After Dickson showed himself to be a treacherous dick I felt sorry for Dunban because both of his friends turned out to be pieces of shit. If he makes any new friends after this, I'd keep an eye on them.

I'm gonna be completely honest, after i got this-

-heart to heart event it made me think Shulk and Reyn grew up together. How else do you get access to someone's sock drawer and also enough time to put a bug in there without them noticing (bugs are scarce man).

Which made me think Dickson didn't really take care of Shulk like that, i mean he obviously cared, but his work probably drew him away for extended periods of time requiring somebody else to do it in his stead.

Though the idea of Mumkhar taking care of Reyn (plus Shulk on Dickson's behest?)? That is ambigious, left up to interpretation. Which is the beauty of the thing as if you believe it? Let it grow, let it fester and see just where you will take it.

Personally, it would be funny if someone like Mumkhar managed to raise such a spirited man, but how he did so is the question of the ages as we only get snippets of who he was before he was overtaken with hate and jealousy (Monado's influence?).

I love Dickson's role as an antagonist in Xenoblade Chronicles 1 because, unlike a lot of villains, he's actually truthful the whole game. His comments are just so out there, plus the personal attachment everyone has towards him that they ignore the signs until it was too late.

Xenoblade 1 thus far be like:

The Monado: Can't damage organic beings but can only damage mechanical beings

Mechons with Faces: Can speak, have red streaming things in their "arms" and "legs", and are immune to the Monado. Always claim that they want to eat the humans for some strange reason that we certainly can't figure out.

Metal Face: Has Mumkar's voice and claws and behaves as though he already knows Shulk and co.

Xord: Stops in his tracks when you asks his name and wonders if "he ever really had one"

Fiora: Dies in the early game but somehow is playable (AND gains exp!), has equipment, and has Heart to Hearts. Is "eaten" by a Mechon shortly after dying.

Dickson: The one time he is playable he doesn't have skill tree link or gain exp, is a guest party member for the rest of the game, has no equipment, and he makes a comment about having to "deceive those kids" en route to the Entia's place
