if you think annabeth chase is abusive to percy just say you didn’t actually read the books and go ☺️
#not to discoursepost about pjo in 2024 . However. people keep saying that shit???#‘she calls him seaweed brain! she thinks he’s stupid!’#‘she hits and abuses him!’#1. seaweed brain is a term of endearment. he’s into it#she doesn’t think percy is stupid it’s literally an inside joke between them#2. the times she ‘hits’ percy it is very clearly friendly/affectionate ribbing. you’ve never swatted a friend?#out of love?#and again. he is INTO IT. i cannot overstate how much percy jackson is INTO IT when she does that#no middle grade couple is doing it like them sorry#percabeth#annabeth chase#percy jackson#pjo#pro percabeth#pro annabeth chase#posts of lark

sometimes I thinkyou guys care more about when someone's being misogynistic about a fictional character than when someones being misogynistic toward an actual real life woman

Love how this is just patently untrue lmao. A great deal of transphobia actually comes from people's inability to understand that someone could be (or "want to be") a gender other than the one they were coersively assigned at birth due to what was perceived to be their sex. A man wearing a skirt is actually not at all "more confusing to most people than a trans person," because a (cis) man wearing a skirt does not "deny" that he is a man; therefore, he does not challenge biological gender essentialism in the way that a trans person, regardless of their presentation, does. A lot of transphobia right now is based on "protecting tomboys" or whatever, even this new wave of "why women who make egg jokes are actually sexual predators" transphobia is based on "protecting femboys", so it's clear that a lot of people don't really have that much of a problem with gender non-conformity, as long as the men in skirts and women with buzzcuts never do anything to suggest that they're anything but men in skirts or women with buzzcuts. There is nothing more "confusing" to a lot of cis people than the very idea that someone "born a man" can "become a woman" (or "born a woman" can "become a man"). For a bunch of people who say that trans women are "purporting gender essentialism", some of u really don't seem to understand what gender essentialism looks like lol
#not to discoursepost i won't do it again  i'll go back to being a smartboy#open mick night#gender#discourse

taash is "rude", bellara is "annoying", sera is "stupid" and vivienne is "a bitch" are like the holy quartet of bad dragon age opinions. oh this character you are asked to empathise with caused you an instant, visceral reaction of dislike/disgust/annoyance? don't worry, there's no need to sit with that disgust or discomfort critically. you're right, they just suck :)

I promise I’m not bitchy vagueposting, I just saw a popular writing advice post from a writing blog and it spurred this on- but I find it so funny when people are like “how do I write/depict [x] without offending [group]?” because in my experience within various groups/demographics, we don’t even agree with each other on stuff like that half the time 😭
#tentatively tapping the hornet’s nest with a long stick#mostly speaking from a disabled standpoint#but I’m sure this applies to other stuff too#like idk. we’re not a monolithic hivemind.#some disabled people are still super into trying to find people who are ‘faking’. this community does not agree on jackshit 😭#there’s more conversation to be had about writing for the sake of appeasing current fandom standards of good rep#and treating it like a checklist rather than creating for your own vision#but that’s just a whole thing with more gray area than I feel like typing out right now#I ALSO feel very differently about rep from big studios and holding random online people to those standards#but again: hornet’s nest.#tangential tmi-#hm. I’m discourseposting. I should start on the naproxen for cramps in the next few days.#I get discoursey when I’m PMSy.

looking at a character & slapping a "morally good" or "morally bad" label on them is not an interesting or critical or productive way of engaging with a story. unfortunately this seems to be the main tool in many people's analytical arsenals, and people who do this seem to assume everyone else is Also Doing This when they say positive things about a really fucked up character, leading to a ton of moralizing claims about "defenders/fans of X character."
this method completely strips characters of an extremely key part of understanding their purpose, the themes the creator(s) might have been trying to explore with them, etc—which is the role they play in the story. often this holds the key to unlocking why all those sick freaks on the internet could possibly like or defend Obviously Evil Guy—it's not that in a vacuum a bunch of people are huge fans of abusive people or murderers or misogynists. the enjoyment of those characters almost always comes from some element of the context, aesthetic, or message of the story.
i think people who engage with characters in this sort of binary good/bad way may not even realize that what they're doing boils down to that kind of face value moralizing claim, because they're usually calling on concepts that we do and should care about—misogyny, abuse, or even more taboo subjects. but this character is not real, so the crime they're calling out is their discomfort, not some kind of separate harm of another person in the real world.
there's definitely nuance here—i'm not saying that the messaging of either a piece of art or the trends in fan works surrounding it can't be harmful. but applying a moral dichotomy to characters, then making moral claims about people based on the characters they like, is something i see often that i wanted to verbalize
#should i tag this? i'm going to#hannibal#sorry for discourseposting i really hope it never ever happens again#i wish we hadn't beaten the word nuance into the ground

God why is everyone so mad when they're told that transmisogyny exists. "Wahhhh I'm actually not privileged and my life is very hard" you sound like a little toddler. Have you never had to realise that you are advantaged in some way before even if your life is difficult in other ways. Have you not had to think about oppression as a thing that happens between social classes and not something that is always 1:1 interpersonally. These are like social justice 101 concepts. Do you know what else is social justice 101? The idea that oppressions can overlap and form new oppressions! They teach us about it at my goddamn job for Christ's sake! Transmisogyny isn't just transphobia and it's not just misogyny it's the two compounding each other. And you would know this if you read anything about it ever - whipping girl is a very accessible text - but you just see a post saying that they're frustrated by the way transmisogyny impacts their lives or the media landscape or the political repression of trans people and you assume that because they've said trans women have it particularly bad (and they do) theyve also implied you're somehow evil for not being a trans woman and they haven't! They didn't! Stop being an idiot!
#aoiferealposting#look i have issues with some of the transfeminist discourse on this site (what purpose does having tma/tme in your bio serve...)#but do the people getting mad at it hear themselves talk.#or maybe they do but theyre fortunate enough to have never heard a 2014 MRA guy talk#to be honest. i think there is a lot of cissexism informing these opinions judging by the amount of people i see online loving to talk abou#how trans women experience male priviledge#also. i think this is very much a hot topic and sore spot for people who havent transitioned yet/are very early in their transition#because they are experiencing broadly cisgender lives and they havent yet realised quite how different their quote unquote cisgender life i#when compared to the lives of actual cisgender people#im sorry for discourseposting it will only happen again if i see another incredibly stupid post. so youd all better behave

Gosh seeing some of the discourse on here really makes it seem like many people are doing their damnedest to try and reinvent anti-feminism in a vaguely progressive dressing.
Instead of the mean evil man-hating feminists they'll talk about TERFs and radfems, and they absolutely won't reflect on it when most of the people they call TERFs are transfems
#Fuck it I'm discourseposting#I'm being light about it though. Not gonna get into it any deeper than I need to#own post
