Tips on Writing Romantic Obsession
Patreon || Ko-Fi || Masterlist || Work In Progress
–
Portraying A Disordered Mind
Romantic obsession is most often a symptom of a larger mental disorder, and there can be a variety of causes or origins of this thinking. Know the symptoms, research how they are displayed, and be true to reality. Be aware that it’s real, that it actually occurs, and that there are real victims (both of the disorder and the disordered individuals). This disorder and state of mind can display in many ways, but in fictional portrayals, it’s common to see the obsessor feeling an overwhelming attraction to the person, overwhelming thoughts of them, an intense need to “protect” them or exert possession over them, etc.
Obsession is A Complex Mindset
Obsession doesn’t only manifest in obsessive behaviors in thinking, but secondary symptoms like the obsessor having lower self-esteem, irrational jealousy, potent delusions, and several narcissistic traits, such as feeling entitled to the other characters’ time, attention, loyalty, devotion, etc. They will also disregard the other person’s wishes or priorities in the interest of satisfying their own idea of what the other “really needs” or “doesn’t realize they do for them”. It stems a lot from trauma, issues with abandonment or being consistently overlooked, dependency on one person for all of their love and attention, etc.
Do Not Isolate The Situation
Even if the protagonist and the antagonist are the only two characters aware of what’s going on, there has to be some sort of awareness (or purposeful lack of awareness/reaction) from secondary characters. Even if it’s just as small as the protagonist’s best friend noticing that the main character is looking behind their shoulder frequently and pointing it out to them. This adds to the tension, raises the stakes, etc.
Think of The Individual Factors
Each character has their own background and mental wiring that contributes to the way the situation plays out. If your main character, for instance, chooses not to report the alarming behavior and keep it a secret, or avoid getting help, you need to make it clear why. Maybe they have a history of authority figures not believing them when they reach out, or they don’t trust their own experiences because of an unrelated trauma. Be purposeful with action, reaction, and thought process. Those things are the bones from which the intrigue hangs.
Approaching Violence...
Is a choice that should be pondered and purposeful. If you’re going to portray such a real, common experience for a lot of people, no matter where you’re from or who you are, you need to do it carefully and always be respectful of those who’ve endured the real thing. Sure, stalking is not as common as domestic violence, but they’re both traumatic experiences and both require great care and responsibility.
Just because it’s fiction doesn’t mean that anything within it is a hypothetical circumstance, and you never know who is reading. Be true to the real horror of the situation, but write with real victims in mind. It’s important to be mindful about the fact that your work may be read by real victims, so if you’re going to depict something in a realistic and impactful way, make sure there’s a good reason beyond shock value.

please write the autistic finn essay
gladly! (thank you for the opportunity anon)
actually, what i'm about to go on about... stems from what we can see in fern!
how, in particular, does this relate to finn? well...
fern displays a lot of traits that are commonly shown by autistic people - can't read social cues, doesn't know how to do things his own way and has to be told how to do them, easily agitated, gets meltdowns when things don't go as planned, stoic, prone to overthinking, shuts down under stress, often comes across as monotone or "robotic", and gets mad when finn describes him as "weird". these are all also symptoms that can show in lots of other disorders as well (i also headcanon him to have anxiety and ptsd, as i imagine that being stuck in a cocoon for god knows how long probably didn't do a whole lot of good to his mental health.)
fern's trauma developed over time. his autism, however - if we assume such is the case - was something he's always had... and this means that our finn, by association, is also autistic! since they are identical clones and all.
getting into some dnd alignments (i swear this relates to finn being autistic), i always thought finn swam somewhere near the pool of lawful good in the very early seasons - acted as was expected of a hero, didn't feel good about breaking laws, and he had a VERY clear distinct line between "good" and "evil" - it was very black and white for him. i think this is an experience i related to a lot myself when i was a kid, as i liked putting things into "boxes", so the idea of good and evil being two exact opposite sides of the spectrum made a lot of sense to me. that's how i imagine finn felt at the time, too. and of course, following rules and liking to have a clear structure is also often a thing with autistic people. i also think that, at times, finn shows signs of hyperempathy towards other people (this is, once again, mostly seen in the earlier seasons.)
i think later on in around the middle of the show, he was probably leaning more towards chaotic good. because while he himself believed that his actions were always for the better, ultimately the way he pushed through was selfish at the core and downright manipulative at its worst (see: his whole relationship with phoebe). this COULD be perceived as an autistic trait - being completely unaware of the harm you might be pushing on other people, as it just genuinely hasn't occured to you that your actions might be damaging - or it could just be finn being an asshole because he was, like, 15. you decide!
later on i think he would develop to become more of a neutral good type character, because i think that while he for the most part respects rules and order, he can, on important occassions, break through and disobey what's expected of him. so, you know, he's kind of been everywhere on the "good" spectrum.
i think i'm the same as finn in a sort of way (which... you know, this whole thing is just me projecting anyways, so that's not surprising), in that when i was younger, i was, in some aspects, a Very stereotypical Autistic Child who liked structure and order and putting things into boxes. later as i got older... i kind of dropped all of those things? and that doesn't... make me any less autistic, lol. i'd imagine it's the same case for finn. he got older, some parts of him changed, some didn't. he's a bit more prone to breaking rules if needed, and he no longer has this overly simple view of how the world works. is there really any good or evil? what do those terms even mean?
anyways i'm autistic and i say finn is autistic so therefore it's true. thanks for reading!
#sorry if this doesn't make much sense i've been sick as a dog for the past week so i'm a bit sleep deprived#asks#anon

okay. i’ve been thinking about this a lot and i think that i should share this with you all
i don’t talk about this frequently for a lot of reasons, but i have an undiagno.sed disso.ciative disorder that i suspect to be O.SDD. i’m sure that’s been guessed at from the things in my DNI, but i never really outright said it. partially because i didn’t feel like it mattered; that’s not what the point of this blog is, and i don’t want to be defined by my trauma. i just want to run a self ship blog and enjoy myself. i also worry, a little bit, that talking about this will lead to me simply becoming peoples’ “s.ys.tem mutual” instead of just being the person i’ve always been. i’m not a novelty, i’m not a rare item to add to a collection, i’m not someone others can point to and say “i can speak on this topic because my mutual experiences it”. that’s happened to me before, and i don’t want that to happen again. additionally, there are a lot of misunderstandings of what D.ID and OS.DD are- there’s the well known “evil al.ter” trope of course, but there’s a lot of other damaging misinformation that has harmed me as well, and i felt safer simply being covert.
the reason i bring it up at all is because i’ve been going through a lot recently. if you’re not aware, diss.ociative disorders like DI.D and OSD.D stem from extreme trauma at a young age, prior to the development of a sense of identity, that the mind cannot handle, and so the developing identity “splits” into another or several dissociated identities, in order to cope with it. this becomes sort of the only coping mechanism ones brain may have as one may not learn other coping mechanisms + as harmful as splits can be they are also extremely effective, and so when other traumas occur, even when they aren’t as severe as the continued trauma which triggered the development of the disorder, ones identity may split further in order to cope with the perceived danger. each identity exists for a reason in that way. when the person with this disorder enters a period of stress that their brain isn’t sure it can deal with, they dissociate into a separate identity in order to cope with and manage the stressor. and, like i said, i’m going through a lot. i may have recovered a fragment of a memory of an abuse that triggered a split, which i repressed through parts (also known as alters- i habitually call them parts and i will not stop, though i don’t apply that term to others with the disorder without asking), which is causing me a lot of stress right now. additionally my life is going through a lot of changes; without going into detail, there’s significant stress regarding a relationship i’ve had for the majority of my life, and there was recently difficulty within my family whom i live with, which, though it seems like it’s passed mostly, i’m still understandably tense over and due to past familial trauma i am afraid of a relapse.
i’ve been in a good place lately. i’ve been coping well and while not integrated, we’ve gained a lot of harmony and lost a lot of amnesic barriers. i’ve dissociated less. but because of the stress i’m going through, that might change a little bit. my behavior may have already changed although i doubt that since these disorders are very typically covert rather than overt, but my behavior may change further. i’ve been co-con a lot lately. i guess my point here is that the way i act might be different for a while. not in a scary way, just that i might be quieter, or less responsive, or write differently. im also very likely to start forgetting things a lot; i might forget to respond to asks, i might forget things people have already told me and ask for the same information again. it’s not anyone’s fault, and im not mad at anyone, nor am i not listening. im just simply trying to get through stuff. i’ll be okay. all i ask is that you please don’t treat me differently because of this. just continue to treat me the same as you have in the past.
#mental health tw#mental illness tw#dissociation tw#paper_heart.txt#not posting this to ask for pity i just feel like i would be being a bad friend to become reclusive and not explain why#i’m still not 100% sure if i want to post this and i might delete it later. but right now i think it’s important to say#long post

April 8th - 30 Days of Autism Acceptance
April 8: What are some misconceptions/stereotypes about autism that you hate?
1. People with autism don’t want friends. Albeit this might be true to some, this isn’t true to all. Most autistics, I’ve found, want to have more friends, but either don’t know how to go about befriending people and/or people don’t want to spend time with them. Personally, for years, I always longed to have a friend who got me and that I could be open with. (I struggled to actually be myself around people my whole life and still do.) My roommate, Missy, is that friend now, but you don’t know how lonely it is going through grade school without a best friend.
Lots of other girls had besties and many of my friends had friends that they shared their most darkest secrets with; they were super close to each other. Since I didn’t know how to go about forming that connection and I am generally a reserved person, I never had that friend and it was painful. I wanted a best friend, but I didn’t know how to establish a strong connection, maintain it, and most people thought I was “weird” and didn’t really want to be my friend.
I don’t mean to throw my own pity party by saying this, but I was the person who others would one day make me feel on top of the world by including me, but then, would distance themselves once they were done with me and make me feel terrible. This constant cycle of inclusion and exclusion, interest and disinterest, was really damaging to younger me. It frustrated me and made me think the reason I couldn’t have a close, good friend was because there was something wrong with me. (There’s never something wrong with you (unless you’re a murderer or that of the like). It’s society who is in the wrong for tossing aside such a beautiful human being.)
2. People with autism can’t feel or express emotion. This statement is 100% false. By saying this, people are invalidating the emotions of autistics, which is never okay. It is true that many on the spectrum have the inability to recognize their own emotions and/or don’t express their emotions as “normal” people do, but we still have feelings. Just recently, I have gotten better at identifying what I’m feeling, but I’m still not adroit with it. Also, I think that I feel a lot more deeply that those not on the spectrum, as do many autistics. Because I don’t really express my emotions, I’ve had people say that I seem “emotionless” and “robotic” all throughout my life. I never did and still don’t think much of it; it’s just how I am.
I get scared, sad, furious, elated, and more. Just because I don’t express my emotions in a way you can understand doesn’t mean I don’t have them. My body language is just different. (Also, I’ve learned to internalize all my emotions and grievances so, no body really knows what’s going on in my head.)
3. All autistics are just like [insert name here]. As I’ve stated numerous times before, the nature of ASD is that no two manifestations of it are exactly the same. Two autistic people may share similar experiences and struggles, but autism still affects them at least slightly differently.
4. Autistics can’t understand the emotions of others and are apathetic. Many autistics actually experience “too” much empathy. Some are apathetic, but as are some people who aren’t on the spectrum. Everyone is susceptible to being apathetic.
5. An autistic person has only struggles; they’re just their autism. Yes, autism is a key part of every autistic’s life, but it is not the only aspect of who we are. I think people should focus more on what a child can do than what they can’t, overall. Sure, Mark may not be able to handle going to the mall due to overstimulation, but he is especially skilled in painting. People should focus less on faults and flaws. Just focusing on such things will make life drab and miserable; plus, people as a whole are more than just their struggles.
6. People can grow out of autism, and it is only present in children. I, along with many others, are proof that this is false. I dislike how the struggles of adults (with and without autism, ADHD, and other disorders) are ignored in society. Not all problems go away with adulthood; it isn’t some cure all.
7. “There wasn’t all this autism/ADHD/etc. stuff back in my day so, it can’t be real.” These disorders are very much real. Perhaps the numbers have been increasing, but maybe there has just been a decrease in ignorance and an increase in compassion and acceptance. Also, diagnosing has gotten much easier, and since there is more knowledge available (i.e. the Internet) than ever before, people can self-screen and then determine whether or not to be tested. The only reason I am diagnosed is because I took the time to research different disorders via the Internet and decided to get professionally evaluated.
8. “Autism is caused by one thing.” Whether this “thing” be vaccines, a gene mutation, bad parenting, trauma, etc., this statement has been proven false by science. When studying the cause of autism, scientists have found that in one person, one gene could be the contributor to the person’s autism while in another, it’s a combination of several genes. The cause is unknown, but bad parenting has been debunked. However, there is evidence to suggest that the presence of heavy metals within a person’s system may be a possible cause. (Numerous children with autism have been found to have high levels of heavy metals within their body.)
As for the vaccine statement, it is unknown whether or not they do or don’t cause autism. There was a study carried out with the goal of proving or disproving the claim, but since the data was skewed, the results are invalid. I don’t necessarily support the claim, but there is not enough evidence for either side of the argument for me to take a side. I am a neutral in this debate. Though, I don’t believe that one should risk the death of their child just because they’d rather not have an autistic child. We’re not that bad; several parents love having an autistic child.
9. Autism only affects the brain. Again, I and many others are living proof that this claim is false. Many people with autism have co-occurring conditions like allergies, food sensitivities, gastrointestinal disorders, and epilepsy. Personally, I have numerous food sensitivities and gastrointestinal issues. I haven’t gotten a name as to what is wrong with my digestive system, but I do know there is a problem given what I experience on a daily basis.
10. All autistics are intellectually disabled. All statements that start with “all autistics” are automatically false. Even if the claim doesn’t pertain to autism itself (i.e. a political belief), autistics, like other people, have their own sets of beliefs and their own lifestyles. We’re human just like you; all that’s different is how our brains are wired and the struggles we endure.
To combat this claim, many autistics have a normal to high IQ level and can excel in school. There are those who have lower IQs, but they still can excel. One’s potential to be great isn’t dictated by IQ or a disability (or an ability and/or advantage for that matter).
11. Autistic people are great at STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) classes. No. Although I especially excel with math and loved Algebra and Calculus, not everyone does. Some of us are great when it comes to STEM courses, but others of us struggle. Not all of us are even remotely interested in STEM, as well. Some of us prefer the arts, labor-intensive activities (i.e. construction), et cetera. We all have our different strong suits.
12. All autistics are savants. Some are, some aren’t. Although we all have special interests, most aren’t savants, actually. I don’t know where I fall when it comes to being a savant or not, but I’m not some super-genius. I didn’t invent some new scientific thing when I was 12 nor did I make a groundbreaking discovery. I do want to do something great with my future career, but I don’t know if I’ll ever be worthy of stardom and fame or be labeled as a savant.
The one thing I dislike is how people dismiss the existence of savants because they hate the stereotype. Autistic savants do exist, as do non-autistic savants, and saying that they don’t is harmful. Stereotypes come from somewhere, right? Savants exist and they deserve representation and appreciation too.
13. Autistic people don’t have relationships and moments of intimacy. Yes, they do. I personally don’t want a relationship right now nor do I want to engage in such intimate acts, but others do.
14. Autism kills marriages. This myth was made widespread by the infamous organization Autism $peaks. Sure, it may end some marriages, but why marry someone who is autistic then? If you truly loved the person then, you would accept them, autism and all.
15. Nonverbal autistics are all intellectually disabled. Although some are, not all are. A handful are highly intelligent. Autism isn’t a one size fits all thing.
16. Autistic people can’t do anything on their own/will never be independent. Some autistics won’t be able to be independent, but not all. Others don’t need any support while some, like me, need minimal support. People with all sorts of aid requirements exist on the autism spectrum. Each of us needs differing levels of support; also, especially so if one also has a chronic illness, some days I will be able to be completely independent, but the next day I may need lots of external support.
17. Having an autistic child is a tragedy. Yes, autism does make things more challenging, but there’s a silver lining in it. Like every other child, autistics are capable of great things and have talents. If people would just look past the struggles, label, and faults then, they’ll see an amazing person who isn’t just a diagnosis, but a fully fledged human being.
18. Autistic people are just rude. On honesty, we are not trying to be rude when saying the truth. In our brains, it is something that is acceptable to say. Many of us thrive on being honest as our brains tend to rely on logic more than anything else. By pointing out the size of your nose, we’re not trying to be rude. Personally, I don’t really struggle with being too honest, but sometimes I do say things aloud that shouldn’t be said. I just think of it as uttering an observation; I have no rude intents. When I am trying to be rude, you will know XD.
On conversational difficulties, it’s not that we don’t want to talk to you, it’s that we don’t know how to continue and/or initiate conversations. Not all autistics struggle a lot when it comes to social communication, but some do. Those who do, we just don’t know how to go about conversing “as normal”. We can’t help it. We’re not being rude. I struggle to continue and start conversations, which has led to many people thinking that I don’t like them. If you want to have a proper, lengthy conversation with me then, you have to start it and be able to keep it going.
On eye contact, we don’t mean to seem rude by not looking you in the eye when talking. For me, maintaining eye contact is distracting, which means that my focus is being directed away from what you’re saying, making me not able to adequately listen to you. Some autistics have little to no problems with eye contact.
19. “You don’t have to stim. Therefore, you’re just doing it to annoy me.” For me, it takes a lot of courage for me to feel comfortable with stimming around you. So, by ridiculing me for doing something that soothes me, you’re furthering my insecurity about it and hurting me. People who stim do it to self-soothe and to regulate themselves. Would you rather I shutdown (go nonverbal), experience sensory overload, or even have a meltdown? I don’t think so. Let people stim. Some of us don’t stim, but it is a lifeline for some of us.
20. “You don’t look autistic.” Well, riddle me this: What does autism look like to you? Apparently, we have completely different views on what an autistic person looks like. For me, an autistic person is anyone (a friend, neighbor, family member, student, teacher etc.) from any walk of life of any religion, lifestyle, culture, etc. The “autism look” is the generic person to me. Is there a specific way we should look, though? Please tell me more about your vision of how an autistic person outwardly appears.
I could go on about this subject for hours, but I’ll stop myself here. If you want me to debunk more myths and/or react to certain common sayings/stereotypes then, please leave a message in my ask box. I really, really, really! want to write more about this topic.

Exploring childhood trauma and its effect on adulthood.
Currently, I am required to take an English 115 course where I thought I’d just be doing basic English learning things such as grammar, writing essays about whatnot, and taking a bunch of quizzes. I already assumed the negative and prepared myself for a long boring semester of English class. However, during some point in the semester, the topic turned to a book called “We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves” by Karen Joy Fowler, where the book follows the chaotic but intriguing life of UC Davis college student named Rosemary, who grew up with a chimp as a sibling, has a runaway brother that is wanted, and two semi deranged parents. To follow up with the book, my English 115 class also watched a documentary titled Project Nim, which is quite similar to the book but documents a different experience that is under the same criteria and theme. Scientists wanted to create and discover verbal communication between chimps and humans, so when Nim the chimp was just a baby, he was given to a human family to see if he can be conformed to society and communicate verbally. Overall, the experiment did not go well and caused many issues within the family and most prominently to Nim. The book and documentary opened a discussion about many issues such as trauma, memory, communication, and childhood. This part of the class became really intriguing to me, and although I had and still have a really hard time keeping up with English 115, the topics discussed are of great interest to me and I loved discussing it. I decided to narrow down my topic and do further research into childhood trauma affecting one’s adulthood, which was a recurring theme in both the book and documentary and that I actually found relevant to myself as well. I’ve come to the conclusion through my research and in-class activities that one’s childhood is a great influence in the way a person develops in present time and in their future, and if not raised correctly and/or unfortunate events have occurred in one’s life, then certain behaviors and psychological disorders are developed as a result of those events or experiences, and can negatively impact the development of the brain. For the rest of my mini-essay/blog, I want to explore the research I did and elaborate more on the documentary and book to further prove my conclusion of the impact of childhood trauma on adulthood.
Throughout the book, it is quite evident that Rosemary has many issues that stemmed from her childhood, with the chimp being the greatest factor of them all. The most saddening moment in Rosemary’s life was when her “sister” Fern, also known as the chimpanzee, randomly “disappeared” one day. It is quite obvious that being raised with a chimp is a whole different experience than being raised with a human sibling. With that being said, because Rosemary considered Fern as a sibling, she developed different perspectives, expectations, and social interactions as a result of conforming to Fern and her ways of interacting. As a result, this caused Rosemary to be an awkward child, and even an awkward adult in her social interactions. She felt as if she had no friends and had a hard time communicating with others. However, Rosemary did, in fact, make one friend. In the opening introduction of the book, Rosemary witnesses a chaotic argument between a woman and who it seemed to be her boyfriend. Out of impulse, Rosemary becomes dramatic as well and joins in. They both disrupted the peace of the environment and both got arrested. While under custody, the woman introduces herself as Harlow Fielding, who is also a UC Davis student studying drama (how ironic). Rosemary stated specifically that she was intrigued by Harlow and decided to interact with her because she exhibited the same characteristics of a chimpanzee (A.K.A Fern); being impulsive and reckless. With the information about some scenes and about the characters I have provided, it is evident that there is a deeper psychological meaning to the actions taken and the effects of certain outcomes as well, and how it plays into how someone may act or perceive the world due to the way they were raised or through past experiences.
Through my research, I found that people who have experienced childhood maltreatment or trauma may reflect those same experiences through their behavior or how they react to people and situations. It was also found that they may be drawn to people who exhibit the same characteristics as the people who they interacted with during their trauma and childhood experiences (Mulder, Tim, Kimberly C Kuiper, Claudia E Van Der Put, Geert-Jan J.M Stams, and Mark Assink, 2018). For example, as mentioned in the previous paragraph, Rosemary found herself intrigued by Harlow due to the fact that she showed many similarities to Fern, who is someone that was dear to Rosemary and was suddenly taken away from her. Although Fern may have a special place in Rosemary’s heart, it does not mean that Fern was a positive influence in Rosemary’s life. Fern was reckless, impulsive, sometimes violent, and caused problems, and because of this it became normal to Rosemary; therefore, it became a behavior that Rosemary exhibited and behavior that Rosemary was attracted to, hence the curiosity she had with Harlow. Harlow was not exactly a good influence on Rosemary and trapped Rosemary into many different issues. Wrapping and connecting all of this information up, it is evident that someone who was greatly influenced by someone in their life, positive or negative, and experienced some sort of trauma or great event in their life, will be drawn to the same negative behavior and experiences that ultimately will affect their behavior, way of life, and social interactions.
Moving on to Project Nim, I just want to say it was an extremely saddening documentary. What those people put the poor chimp through just for a psychology experiment was hard to watch, that ultimately left Nim with what it seemed like an identity crisis, trauma, violence, and non-conformed behavior that was uncontrollable, which was all due to the fact that he was given to a human family to be raised in. The first caretaker he was given to was an American family whose task was to raise Nim as a human child to conform him to society. Nim learned some English Sign Language (ESL), but he still acted like a chimp and would act out in violence where he would destroy their house or hurt the family members. This eventually became too much for the family to handle and for the next several years Nim was passed down to different caretakers because he was simply too much to handle for humans. Eventually, Nim was moved to a notorious research facility that kept chimps in small cages with other chimps. Nim had an extremely hard time socializing with other chimps as he was raised by humans and was constantly picked on by the other chimps. It was evident through Nim’s behavior and facial expressions that he was full of fear and sadness, almost as if he was in a depressive state.
'Keeping Chimpanzees In Cages Is Torture', Bob Ingersoll.
Fortunately, Nim was moved to a ranch for abused animals where he was able to spend the last of his years in harmony and peace. The life of Nim was one that was especially important because his saddening experience as a science experiment and documentary brought awareness to the fact that one, chimps and animals are not for our amusement to use as our experiments, and two, chimps should not be confined in cages in research facilities that causes many mental issues and trauma to the chimps, who have scientifically been proven countless of times that they are just as smart and aware as humans, and their brains are no different than ours.
Going into the research I did about trauma, since the brains of chimpanzees are extremely similar to that of a human, we can draw the same conclusions to get an estimate as to how they develop certain behaviors throughout their life, and a lot of the conclusions drawn is just simple cause and effect as well. As mentioned previously, the chimp’s trauma began when they took him from his mother and in the arms of complete strangers. You may think it was extremely hard for the family to raise Nim as he’s just an animal, but imagine being disciplined for who you are and the nature of your being, which would ultimately create an identity crisis for Nim. Studies have shown that children who are in abusive households tend to exhibit the same behavior while interacting with other people and especially in schools, where reinforcement is needed by special staff and more caretaking (Shen, April Chiung-Tao, 2009). This information can be compared to Nim’s experience where he was put into a cage with other chimps of his own kind for the very first time. Because Nim was raised by a human, his behavior was more similar to the way they raised him rather than how an actual chimp would act. As a result, the other chimps would bully him and Nim became lonely, this caused him to go into a deep depressive state. Nim also had violent behaviors with most humans and would not want to interact with them at all. With research, I found that this behavior is a result of childhood betrayment that causes negative behavior towards people who have similar characteristics to the person that originally caused their trauma (Hocking, Elise C, Raluca M Simons, and Renata J Surette, 2016). With this research, it can be concluded that Nim felt betrayed by his original family and by humans in general while he was being passed down to different caretakers and put into a research facility, that caused him to be violent or negative with humans in general.
Concluding all of the research I have done, and the in-class assignments of reading the book and watching the documentary, it is quite evident that childhood trauma and certain experiences through one’s life can negatively affect the way that someone may see the world, how the world perceives them, and their overall behavior and social interactions. The book and documentary is a good way to see the trauma and its outcomes come into play, and how it affects one's life. It creates more personal experience as you can see the struggles of Rosemary and Nim and how they adapt to their later life with what they know from their experiences and how they conformed to society. The research was an add on and helped further prove and conclude my statement, creating a deeper understanding of the book and documentary, and even for one’s self. I hope that this mini-essay/blog helped you better understand yourself, a loved one, or someone you may know if they act in a particularly negative way. If you notice someone or something is off in their behavior and social interactions, remember to be the bigger person and maybe ask if they’re okay, they may be going through something. To further wrap up my text, if you may think that you are going through something similar do not hesitate to reach out for professional help, to do research, or talk to someone you can trust. Everything has a fix, it just takes time.

I'm not sure if you're awake right now but I wanna ask, can you describe some things your ocd causes(I don't know if that's a good word to use but it's all I can think of) you to do? I'm wanting to write a story involving a character with ocd, while I'm doing research I remembered (I might be wrong though so feel free to correct me) that I think you said somewhere before you had it and since you kind of inspire me to go after things I thought I ask. If it's too personal feel free to delete!
Also, ocd story anon, I read that trauma can be a cause of ocd, do you believe that your ocd could've come from your trauma?
This is a very very long response going into a few of my (and some alters) OCD traits and some reasoning behind them and the range of responses I have to various triggers. It actually helps me analyze my traits better when ppl ask stuff like this so I may have gone overboard as stuff kinda clicked in my brain but hopefully somewhere in here you will get your answer.
So, I’m going to start with the last question first. MY OCD was not caused by my trauma, however my traumas have completely shaped my compulsions and obsessions to a point where my OCD traits are almost inseparable from my PTSD. See, I’m autistic, and OCD is part of this co-morbidity package a lot of autistic people end up with, to a point where the co-morbid disorders are often not even diagnosed after the autism is because its that common. (They’ll diagnose separately if you need treatment for one of them. like the reason i have ADHD and OCD listed as dx’s is because the doctors count them separately on me bc i need medication for them, but they’re extremely common to the point of being expected with most ASD dxs)
Yes, I have OCD and have always had, but my trauma caused so much anxiety that the disorder reshaped itself around specific triggers. There are many layers to my OCD, it’s actually a strange sort of nonspecific looking presentation because of how many alters also have OCD, so it becomes difficult to tell who has which O and C thus there being a lot of inconsistency in whether or not a trigger affects me.
It’s also worth nothing that some doctor’s feel that I fit under the specific label of “scrupulosity” or rOCD (Religious OCD) because of how much of my stuff revolves around religion. I don’t always agree that it’s this because while my O and C are based on religious themes, I don’t believe in the concepts behind the things. I believe most of the religious stuff is just from religious trauma.
On one layer, I have a number obsession. There are certain numbers that are tolerable, a few that are “cursed,” and one that is “blessed” and one that is “perfect.” I will do anything to change things to match my blessed and perfect numbers. I will even fudge the truth a little (not a lie, often an exaggeration, by about one or two digits) to make something fit those numbers. To randomly come across a cursed number or even just a slightly intolerable one, makes me very anxious and can shape how i spend my day and how much time i spend with my better numbers. The way my trauma shaped this compulsion was that my numbers tie to religious stuff, since my traumatic environment was often religious, or trauma would be inflicted with religious reasons.
There is an alter that has a compulsion to say a prayer. When we have intrusive thoughts (which you super need to research if you’re writing OCD bc it is a KEY PART of the disorder but ill go into it later here), someone starts reciting the prayer. Sometimes I will as well just because it’s easier to go along with it. Not completing the prayer is not an option. I mean that with absolutely every intent. Not completing the prayer is NOT AN OPTION. It does elieviate some background anxiety, so whoever is dealing with that is being helped by the compulsion, but it is extremely frustrating and upsetting, especially since i am as non-religious as i can possibly manage to be. The prayer is also said whenever something is uneasy or something triggers specific flashbacks.
One of the most obviously noticeable and upsetting for all involved O and C is being “dirty.” There’s a VERY wide range of triggers here, from actually dirty/germy/unclean things, to unpleasant/intolerable sensory triggers, all the way to conceptual dirtiness like sin, virginity, and lying. This can affect me subtly sometimes, like how i compulsively tell the truth and over share so that i feel clean or how i cannot go to sleep after a fight if it has not been resolved. (”never go to bed angry” they said, well shit now i literally cant cool.) This can also hit me violently and to a point where I am a danger to myself. I worked at a movie theater for a summer some time ago and touched something that was a bad sensory feeling while cleaning a dirty theater. I then proceeded to scrub my hands in near-boiling water for almost fifteen minutes in the break room, broke down sobbing, and when I got home i sat under very very hot water in the shower until my skin was raw and red for days. It doesn’t often get to that point, but when it does, I’ve been held down for my own safety since I’ll literally rip my skin and bite myself to punish myself for being dirty. It is frequently bad enough that I will let myself do something “dirty” as a form of self harm since it seriously makes me miserable and sick. This stuff comes both from religious trauma and from just....crappy normal autism feelings and manifests as my most disabling OCD trait.
There are other things like closing drawers and straightening and arranging things that are done to feel that I am being “good” because of reprimands I received in the past that made me feel like I am “bad.” I am sometimes able to not act on these compulsions, though it takes conscious effort to choose not to. Whether or not this stems from trauma doesn’t really matter to me. I know that most of the fronting alters have these “little OCDs” be it through me or for their own reasons. Tia for instance has to keep things in the kitchen a certain way and Phoebe has to complete certain physical activities a certain way or else she gets upset or feels she did a very bad job/failed.Since I’m really just. going at this question lmao lets talk a little about intrusive thoughts. Intrusive thoughts are upsetting/disturbing/unacceptable thoughts you do not take pleasure in. For me, a few of them make me feel dirty, which triggers my compulsions very badly. Some relate to trauma, others don’t make sense. There are very common ones such as urges to kill or mutilate self or others, urges to do disastrous things (like causing a huge car accident), urges to do disgusting sexual acts (to self or others, often to unacceptable people like children, elders, and the undesired sex), urges to become a serial killer/rapist/shooter/etc, and other such painfully upsetting things such as those. These are often what fuel the obsessions in OCD and the compulsions are to make these thoughts stop or hurt less. Personally, I get a lot of sexual ones because of how poorly the topic was handled in my childhood. I get ones about elaborately slaughtering a specific abuser, about doing things that will kill me, about mutilating myself and mutilating pets (those are the ones that fuck me up the most i think), and about doing very destructive things that would harm a lot of people. I also get some about terrorism happening where I am, but that one is FOR SURE a trauma thing so maybe it could just be my PTSD.
Intrusive thoughts occur with a LOT of different disorders!!!!! It’s just OCD when you have compulsions to cope with them. Even then, it has to be a certain way for it to qualify.
I hope I was able to give you somewhere to start in terms of information. OCD is a very big disorder and is a major reason why I’m unable to function in a workplace environment. I didn’t go into the specifics of every compulsion, but if you have questions, I don’t mind talking about this stuff. It helps me process it to explain it to others and I end up healing a little through oversharing I think.

The Concept of Schizophrenia Is Coming to an End - Here`s Why
The idea of schizophrenia is dying. Harried for decades by psychology, it currently appears to have actually been fatally wounded by psychiatry, the really occupation that once sustained it. Its death will not be mourned.
Today, having a medical diagnosis of schizophrenia is connected with a life-expectancy decrease of almost 20 years. By some requirements, just one in seven people recover.
Despite advertised breakthroughs in therapies, terribly, the proportion of people that recuperate hasn't raised over time. Something is exceptionally wrong.
Part of the trouble ends up being the concept of schizophrenia itself. Disagreements that schizophrenia is a distinctive illness have actually been 'fatally weakened'.
Just as we now have the concept of autism spectrum condition, psychosis (commonly qualified by upsetting hallucinations, delusions, and also overwhelmed ideas) is additionally said to exist along a continuum as well as in degrees.
Schizophrenia is the severe end of a spectrum or continuum of experiences.
Jim van Os, a professor of psychiatry at Maastricht College, has argued that we could not change to this new method of thinking without changing our language.
As such, he proposes the term schizophrenia 'should be eliminated'. In its location, he recommends the principle of a psychosis range disorder.
Another trouble is that schizophrenia is depicted as a 'helpless persistent mind condition'. Because of this, some individuals given this diagnosis, and also some parents, have been told cancer cells would certainly have been more effective, as if much easier to cure.
Yet this view of schizophrenia is just feasible by omitting individuals who do have favorable results. Some that recuperate are efficiently told that ' it should not have actually been schizophrenia after all'.
Schizophrenia, when recognized as a distinct, hopeless and deteriorating mind condition, suggests van Os, 'does not exist'.
Breaking down breakdowns
Schizophrenia might instead transform out to be several points. The noteworthy psychiatrist Sir Robin Murray describes just how:
I expect to see completion of the concept of schizophrenia soon ... the disorder is currently starting to failure, for instance, right into those instances caused by copy number [genetic] variants, medicine misuse, social hardship, and so on. Most likely this process will certainly speed up, and the term schizophrenia will be restricted to history, like 'dropsy'.
Research is now checking out the various ways individuals might wind up with most of the experiences deemed characteristic of schizophrenia: hallucinations, deceptions, disorganised thinking and practices, lethargy and level emotion.
Indeed, one past error has been to blunder a path for the path or, a lot more typically, to error an alley for a motorway.
For example, based on their work with the bloodsucker Toxoplasma gondii, which is transferred to human beings through cats, researchers E. Richer Torrey and Robert Yolken have said that 'one of the most crucial etiological agent [source of schizophrenia] may transform out to be an infectious cat'.
It will not.
Evidence does recommend that direct exposure to Toxoplasma gondii when young could increase the odds of somebody being identified with schizophrenia.
However, the size of this impact involves less compared to a double rise in the odds of a person being diagnosed with schizophrenia. This is, at best, equivalent to various other threat variables, and also probably much lower.
For instance, experiencing childhood difficulty, utilizing cannabis, and having childhood years viral infections of the main nerve system, all increase the probabilities of someone being detected with a psychotic disorder (such as schizophrenia) by around 2 to threefold.
More nuanced evaluations reveal much greater numbers.
Compared with non-cannabis users, the everyday use of high-potency, skunk-like cannabis is related to a fivefold increase in the odds of someone creating psychosis.
Compared with a person who has actually not suffered trauma, those who have actually experienced five different sorts of injury (including sexual as well as physical abuse) see their chances of creating psychosis rise much more compared to fiftyfold.
Other routes to "schizophrenia" are likewise being recognized. Around 1 percent of situations show up to stem from the removal of a tiny stretch of DNA on chromosome 22, referred to as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.
It is additionally feasible that a low single digit percentage of individuals with a schizophrenia diagnosis could have their experiences grounded in inflammation of the brain created by autoimmune problems, such as anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, although this stays controversial.
All the variables over could result in similar experiences, which we in our early stage have taken into a bucket called schizophrenia.
One individual's experiences might result from a mind condition with a solid genetic basis, possibly owned by an exaggeration of the normal procedure of pruning connections between brain cells that occurs during adolescence.
Another person's experiences may result from a complex post-traumatic reaction. Such interior and exterior aspects can also operate in combination.
Either means, it transforms out that both severe camps in the schizophrenia battles - those who see it as a genetically-based neurodevelopmental disorder as well as those who see it as an action to psychosocial elements, such as misfortune - both had parts of the puzzle.
The concept that schizophrenia was a solitary thing, reached by a single route, added to this conflict.
Implications for treatment
Many medical conditions, such as diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure, could be gotten to by several courses that however impact the exact same organic pathways and reply to the exact same treatment.
Schizophrenia could be like this. It has been said that the several different causes of schizophrenia reviewed above might all have an usual last effect: increased degrees of dopamine.
If so, the debate regarding damaging schizophrenia down by factors that lead to it would be rather academic, as it would certainly not lead treatment.
However, there is emerging evidence that various courses to experiences currently regarded indicative of schizophrenia may need different treatments.
Preliminary evidence suggests that individuals with a background of childhood years trauma who are identified with schizophrenia are much less likely to be assisted by antipsychotic drugs.
However, even more research study into this is needed and also, of course, any person taking antipsychotics should not quit taking them without clinical advice.
It has actually likewise been suggested that if some situations of schizophrenia are really a form of autoimmune sleeping sickness, after that the most efficient treatment can be immunotherapy (such as corticosteroids) as well as plasma exchange (cleaning of the blood).
Yet the emerging picture below is unclear. Some brand-new interventions, such as the family-therapy based Open Discussion technique, reveal assurance for a vast variety of individuals with schizophrenia diagnoses.
Both basic interventions and specific ones, tailored to a person's individual course to the experiences linked with schizophrenia, could be needed. This makes it crucial to check for and also ask people about all potentially relevant causes.
This consists of youth abuse, which is still not being routinely inquired about and also identified.
The possibility for different treatments to work for different people additional discusses the schizophrenia battles. The psychiatrist, person or household that see dramatic advantageous effects of antipsychotic medications normally evangelically advocate for this approach.
The psychoanalyst, patient or household that see medicines not functioning, yet alternative strategies appearing in order to help, admire these. Each team sees the other as denying a technique that they have experienced to work.
Such passionate advocacy is to be praised, as much as the factor where individuals are rejected an approach that could benefit them.
What comes next?
None of this is to claim the principle of schizophrenia has no use. Several psychiatrists still see it as an useful professional syndrome that aids specify a group of people with clear wellness needs.
Here it is deemed defining a biology that is not yet comprehended however which shares a common as well as significant genetic basis across numerous patients.
Some people that obtain a diagnosis of schizophrenia will certainly discover it helpful. It could assist them gain access to treatment. It could improve support from family as well as friends.
It could provide a name to the troubles they have. It could show they are experiencing a disease and not a personal falling short. Certainly, several do not discover this diagnosis helpful.
We have to keep the benefits and also discard the downsides of the term schizophrenia, as we move right into a post-schizophrenia era.
What this will appear like is vague. Japan recently renamed schizophrenia as 'assimilation disorder'. We have actually seen the suggestion of a brand-new 'psychosis range problem'.
However, traditionally, the classification of conditions in psychiatry has been argued to be the outcome of a struggle in which 'one of the most well-known as well as verbalize teacher won'.
The future needs to be based on proof as well as a conversation that includes the perspectives of people that suffer - and deal well with - these experiences.
Whatever arises from the ashes of schizophrenia, it must give much better means to assist those having problem with extremely real experiences.

You Wanted 10 Pages on the Meaning of Life, So I Wrote the Narrative of How I Lost My Answer
I suppose I must have discovered the question “Why?” before any other. The moment I could question anything, it was motivation. It seems to be a commonality of the normative human experience, based on the shared grievance every parent faces having to bear their child’s repetitive uttering of the inquiry. It marks a point when a child learns the complexity of language and its relation to their condition.
I spent the subsequent formative years absorbing every answer to that question like a sponge. I was constantly prompted to ask, and some people took the time to answer, and I retained each response. Despite how thoughtful or thoughtless, gentle or crass, filtered or raw as the deliverer saw fit at that moment in time, that response contributed to my definition of the world.
Specific individuals certainly carried more weight in this process of definition I was partaking in, such as my parents and siblings. My mother was a devout Catholic, who raised me with 9 o’clock Sunday morning mass and Wednesday evening catechism. A lot of her answers to my questions of “why” revolved around this narrative that I heard before any other, and in looking back, it is not unreasonable to assume she held onto the faith for that purpose. Not just for her children who asked, but to fulfill the same questions she probably asked her mother some thirty-odd years prior.
There is a moment, though I cannot remember a marked point where it occurred, that I realized not every answer to my questions of why was necessarily true. Perhaps it was when it seemed my learned definitions could not reasonably all contain truth simultaneously. This brought about a deepening of my sense of self, as I realized I had a decision to make each time information was given to me - to keep it or to throw it away. However, this perception of free will appears a fallacy to me now - how could I have had the capacity to make that decision, without understanding? I could not, but I really believed I contained the understanding, which is a naive impression some people carry through their entire lives. Something I now understand as a hindrance was my misunderstanding that people who misinformed me were doing it intentionally. This vilified the people I found to be dishonest, but also left the information (God) from people I trusted (my mother) reserved as undeniably true.
I was probably around ten years old when I began to conceive the idea that I did not know everything, and as a matter of fact would never know. Perhaps it was the introduction of infinity in Math, or space in Science, but I know I became acutely aware there were things outside of my capacity for understanding. With this newfound realization, I began to grow suspicious of every person who told me definite information. My interest in the question of “why” resurfaced, but with a new level of desired understanding. It could be asked not just of actions, but of supposed information. If someone could not adhere to my prodding, their teaching was as good as lying to me. The budding adolescent began questioning everything everyone had ever told her. This was also when I first remember experiencing panicked episodes, involving disordered eating, self-harm, and manic anger.
I went through middle school rather confused, as most remember the experience, and each memory involves sullen or anxious feeling. I kept most of my feelings from my parents, because I thought they would overreact. I attended a charter school, and there were about a hundred kids in each grade. Children took a standardized test three times per year to track their learning progress, and place them in a classroom of students within a similar scoring range. There was a huge emphasis on academic merit and competition, with frequent award ceremonies for performance. I remember agonizing over those tests, each grade, award, and ranking, which contributed to my long-term academic success, but also my need for validation.
I was an altar server at my church, got good grades in school, played the trombone and volleyball. However, I had difficulty connecting with other kids my age. Most of my peers did not seem to feel the weight of the world, and the ones who did could not understand why I was so sad even though my parents weren’t divorced and I went to church every Sunday. It seemed as though some people were sad, and some were not, but most people who were sad had a good reason.
I found solace in obsession over boy bands and actors, and engaging with other fans online. I was one of the first generations to have social media before I could drive, or even cross the main road from my neighborhood to the playground. This was where the majority of my unhealthy coping mechanisms derived. I found a whole online community of other depressed young women, which felt like a relief at the time. However, while the community was meant to validate each other and our experiences, it also normalized and even romanticized unsound means of handling those experiences. It is an interesting problem that exists, because it is impressionable minds being influenced by equally impressionable minds. Coupling that with mental illness, it is no wonder why the youth is depressed. There are facets of this community for everyone, too, because they usually naturally stem from any fanbase. This is because people use artists and influencers and other idolized individuals as a source of motivation, and sometimes to an obsessive degree. The mentally ill find one another in each fanbase, and bond over their shared stories of salvation through whatever song or video, and eventually feel comfortable sharing more personal experiences. For me, my infatuation with characters in books and movies was merely a substitute for when I would finally be old enough for a real romance. Romance was the cure for all of my sadness.
I was raped the day after my 14th birthday by my first boyfriend. I don’t think I even understood what had happened to me. It was the summer before I began high school, and my first romance had really betrayed me. In the months that followed my trauma, I had to endure not only how it altered my definition of the world, but also of myself. The young man who violated me found it worth bragging about. I entered the hellscape of contained adolescents which was high school with a collection of choice words to my reputation. For a long time, it felt as though the definition of myself was primarily constructed by the people around me, even though theirs did not align with mine.
At first, I felt shame. I was no longer a virgin - something I knew God was not going to be pleased with. I think about a month in, we had some sort of health lesson on sex and consent, and then I really fucking hated God. I was struck by the same inconsistencies other scholars and common people alike have found with monotheism throughout history - if God is all-powerful, how could he let this happen to me, if he is still all-good? The design surrounding my circumstances could not have come from anything with good intentions, certainly nothing worth worshipping.
I decided that God was going to hate me anyways, and so I was going to hate him, too. Instead, I focused on repairing my social status. I found that I tended to surround myself with other miserable people, and this gave me some dark, delicious satisfaction. I could find purpose in the degree of imperativeness possessed by my relationships to others. There are cultural phenomena which catered towards this sick perception, and I do view it as an illness in hindsight. I had an understanding of Adult Concepts like “right,” “love,” “just,” which was that they all called for sacrifice. This tendency led me to person after person as I prepared to use my desperation for validation through selflessness to their advantage.
I got into a relationship with a piece-of-shit-boy to prove to everyone that I was not a slut. After about a year of turmoil that continued to escalate, I enrolled in an early college program to be at a different school from him. I was taking a Global Ethics course my sophomore year of high school, and I was prepared to find a new set of rules to fasten to my existence. However, any ideology that attempted to justify the experiences I had faced, and was still facing, automatically became discredited to me. As I was in the midst of trying to flee an abusive relationships, I was learning about various divine forces that could be controlling me, such as karma, and ethical frameworks surrounding ideologies from family to greater good. The course was focused on the various definitions of morally right and wrong, and it seemed to me as though there was no set of ethics applicable to something like the human race. The more moral frameworks I read about, the less morals had any credence in my mind. My boyfriend was fucked up because of other circumstances; blame could be traced back indefinitely for why he was the way he was. Blaming myself felt more concrete, but there were other factors at play I could not recognize from my position. Who was going to tell me who to blame? Without morals, I thought I could at least cling to truth, but found doubt to be an unavoidable obstacle in searching for it.
One truth the world seemed to project back to me time and time again were states of subjectivity. I found myself becoming increasingly upset, because despite their lack of rationality, they were widely accepted. Frequently, the facts of my being a woman, a person with mental illness, in a family dangling off the edge of “middle class”, and so on, were brought to my attention through how I was treated by others. These assigned facts put me at some disadvantage, but I was well aware that there were other oppressions I would never experience. It seemed privilege could be measured in how few labels one’s assigned - but as I aged through the Obama presidency and into the Trump conniption, in a world of instantaneous globalized media, I learned that there was much more vocabulary surrounding these feelings I had. They talked about misogyny and “red flags” - and I felt as though my suffering did not have to have a reason in order for it to end. It was no longer a unique thing, but a shared experience, one of which other people had escaped.
I have to say, it felt good to know other people were seeing the same shit I was seeing, outside of myself. That was the best part of growing up. At first, it was just seeing it, and I was looking around to only see mindless participants and evil perpetrators. When I found out there were other people not just defining these phenomenon, but also combating them, I was impatient to involve myself in the process. I was not convinced, however, of moral right or wrong on a global scale, but I understood tragedy to be something I did not want around. For someone who was not sure what to do with herself, looking around and worrying about the state of the whole seemed like a productive use of energy.
In my social justice phase, finally rid of horrible men, I poured myself into public outcry, as well as education. I read academic papers, watched and read the news, went to hear experts speak. I began deconstructing all of the opinions I’d been thoughtlessly carrying without realizing, and I attempted to participate in dialogue. I had to learn my place within that as well. As more people began trying to speak over one another, I understood the importance of boundaries within where I could speak - it was only valid to discuss things personally affecting me, and do what was in my capability to further project the voices behind other necessary discussions.
There was a lapse, though, when I was violated again by a third man in my junior year of high school. After going through a transformation, and feeling grounded and confident, I still fell victim to my subjectivity. I had been sneaking around my strict parents, and the kid who was meant to take me home refused to without sex first. The fact was, I was going to have sex I didn’t want or have to answer my parent’s questions of “why”. My parents subjected me to their expectations of a socially acceptable young lady, and that boy subjected me to his expectations of a car ride recipient, apparently. It did not matter that I had endured an abusive relationship for a year and a half; he still saw slut.
It was at this moment that I decided my existence was a fucking joke. I thought if someone was making this happen he probably really enjoyed himself. If God is real, he has to be a man. I began throwing myself into surrealism, and lost any motivation to learn or expand upon myself at all. I drove up to school each day, and sat in the parking lot for however long class was supposed to be, smoking bowl after bowl. My life became narrowed to finding ten more dollars, and then fifty cents or a dollar for a cigarette or two, finding a place to nap, a parking lot where no one would mind if I sat for a while.
The funny thing was, through all of this, no one was worried about me until an entire semester had gone by and the grades came in. That’s when my mom really thought she began connecting the dots, but blamed it all on my deviation from her expectations. My lack of pride in my appearance, disinterest in things like homecoming and school spirit, and especially my absence in church, disappointed my mom. It was difficult to see her come to conclusions about me from her narrowed perspective, but also could not bring myself to communicate my side to her. Even if I did, I knew our ideologies were too distant to discuss everything productively. This deepened the divide in our relationship.
I was just passing time until I could flee. I had this notion that becoming an adult would give me the freedom to rise above all of these definitions and find my own motivations, purely because I would be able to leave the place I had remained stagnant in for my entire life. Every negative association I had to my home overshadowed any good childhood memory. I found others who were dismantling their ties with hopes to leave soon.
This is where finding motivation became a precedent. I was going to have to start trying if I really wanted to leave. My sights set everywhere; I could see myself bustling in a city in New England, or meandering through a sunny West coast campus. I even entertained the thought of studying in France, going as far as to enroll in two French courses my senior year. However, I had no concept of how my established habits would inhibit these from being possible.
The work of actually reaching these destinations loomed over me, and I ignored it. It was easy to do when I was high all the time. I fantasized about eating brie in an authentic Parisian cafe while I sat in some parking lot when my French class was in session. I longed for rigorous discourse with people in wire-rimmed glasses while my Common Application sat blank. When the deadlines popped up in my planner, I smoked more.
I could not explain what possessed me to disassociate from my life so strongly. I guess this is my attempt to find out. Obviously, it worked out. I found a college nestled in some pretty mountains in Pennsylvania that wasn’t going to make me specialize in anything right away.
I am currently in the process of rebuilding my existence which I have been unsuccessful in annihilating. Part of that is finding the motivation. There are numerous things which I could list as being motivations, and the capacities which they fulfill are diverse but have an undeniable common factor, which is that they bring me some sort of contentment. I refrain from using the word happy, because anyone who solely pursues pleasure is met with immense disappointment in such an uncomfortable and unforgiving world.
From my observation of my peers, a common theme within their motivations is some goal for the future. However, I have found that my inability to invest in any “future” is rooted in how ineffective it is to conceive it. People create an ideal future, and spend the present moment working towards it, ignoring the fact that it only has as much substance as any idea. Setting any expectation, to me, only creates infinite possibilities of failure and a singular possibility of success. Perhaps the motivation is found in enjoying that process, but I do not see how it is possible to enjoy doing something when you do not know where it is going.
