Adding trigger warnings does not detract from the content, it does not make you complicit in genocide, it does not make your post less valuable. It makes your post accessible. I, like many others, have been forced to skip a lot of posts full of information because seeing something genuinely triggering can put me out of commission for days. For some people it’s weeks.

Even if it wasn’t that long, it’s a form of accessibility that makes it so more people can share. More people can repost and reblog and what have you.

Accessibility in posts is always important but right now when spreading information is the goal it should be required. That means alt text for images, using the alt text function, people who use screen readers have been begging for us to use the alt text function for as long as it’s been a thing, start using it.

Beyond that, don’t use any fancy formatting or aesthetics. It clutters the post and makes it overwhelming to folks with disorders that impact focus and reading ability.

And finally, activist burnout.

If you’re someone who is marginalized in any way you’ve probably experienced it, might be experiencing it now (I know I am)

Because when you’re a minority in a hateful area, existing is a form of activism. The physical act of being alive and trying to survive under capitalism even if you don’t or can’t participate in organized activism is a protest.

Welcome to Mod Appreciation Month!

This event is a lowkey one, designed for us to take some time to catch up on asks, rec lists, and other blog pages that happen mostly in the background such as the masterlists, database, and post tagging.

This blog is a lot of work! And we're happy to help out with promoting authors and exposing readers to new and interesting stories based on their interests!

That being said, we need a break!

This is why we are closing the inbox for July.

Please refrain from sending asks for rec lists through submissions. We’re leaving that line open specifically for new authors to submit their projects.

We are going to utilize this time to try and clear out our inbox--we have over 100 messages, most of them asking for rec lists, which take a few weeks at a time to properly curate, tag, and put in the queue.

We will also be working behind the scenes on other projects we hope to show off soon!

Now, to get into some of the details. (This applies regardless of the event to every ask sent, even if the inbox is currently closed.)

RULES WHEN SENDING ASKS

If you can and it is relevant, please tag your asks with content warnings in the beginning. Such as (cw violence) or (cw death), this is an extra precaution to keep both our mods and our readers safe and well-advised. This will also make tagging easier!

Please keep your asks as brief as you can! Any asks that are more than two asks long may get eaten by the Tumblr machine and/or may not be answered due to length.

If your ask hasn't been answered, it may be because it already has been! Be sure to search the tags and FAQ before sending in an ask.

Please don't spam! We won't respond to inappropriate asks or asks that have already been answered.

Recommendation lists

If you are submitting an ask for a rec list please be aware that these lists take a lot of time and effort to make! In average, it might take us up to two weeks to fully finish and queue a rec list, sometimes even longer. We’re happy to put them together but we ask for patience and understanding.

With that in mind, here are some guidelines:

Please look through the #interact-if asks and #if: rec list tags before sending and ask.

Constantly looking out and keeping track of IF projects takes a good chunk of our time among our other responsibilities as mods. For this reason, we came up with a tagging system that makes it easy for our audience to look through the blog. Unfortunately, it gets overlooked most of the time.

And for this reason, we get repetitive asks, which we ignore and delete.

The tagging system is there for your and our convenience. If you’re not sure whether you’re asking for a rec list of the same theme/genre that has already been posted, please consider looking through the aforementioned tags before sending an ask.

As much as we love entertaining the rec list asks, it does tend to be bothersome having to constantly reblog and link new asks to the posted rec lists, as well as reminding people to use the tagging system.

Please make your ask neither too broad nor specific.

This isn’t to sound finicky we promise! If an ask is looking for fantasy IFs without specifics we cannot properly curate a list of what you’re looking for. Is it modern fantasy? Medieval? Non-Eurocentric? Do you want fae fantasy? Supernatural? Fantasy is one of the most popular genres and asks like this example we cannot properly answer.

This is why we ask for rec list requests to be not too broad.

As for narrow–too narrow an ask will likely return a very short or non-existent list! At the end of the day there are only so many IFs and very specific niches may not be filled. We will try our best to answer, but likely your list will result in games adjacent to your request that we think best kind of sort of fit your request. We’re doing our best with the IFs that are out there.

Please be patient!

We often spend several days working on a single list. If your ask hasn’t been answered yet it may still be in the works or in our queue! If it’s been a long while and it still has not been answered, it may have been ignored for a variety of reasons including: Too broad an ask, too similar to previous rec lists, contains NSFW or offensive materials, etc. Please refrain from sending multiple check up asks

On the topic of NSFW asks/content…

We have received some inquiries regarding NSFW (like smutty scenes) recommendations in IF recently, and believe it best to clarify the stance Interact IF has on the matter.

We will be refraining from answering questions about explicit sexual content in IF. We as a team do not feel we have the expertise to help with this, nor have we been on the lookout for explicitly sexual IFs.

As well, it is not entirely suitable for the blog, as Interact IF is for all ages and there may be minors following it.

We would like this blog to remain as SFW as we can manage, with games properly tagged for their age groups and limiting asks and rec lists to non-sexually-explicit content.

Game Recommendations

Before sending in a game, please keep these aspects in mind:

DO

The game must be interactive fiction–the reader plays a character (either customizable or pre-determined) and makes choices that influence the game in some way.

The game can be text-based or a visual novel.

The game does NOT violate copyright (i.e. A published for-profit IF that is using the Star Wars universe. If it is not-for-profit (it’s free to play) then this is fine)

DON’T

If you play a character and can physically move them (walk, run, jump, attack), we consider this a video game and isn’t currently a niche we are supporting.

Recommend a game produced by a company–we are here to support individual authors or games written collaboratively by a group of authors/artists/etc.

Don’t recommend games that glorify violence, sexual violence, racism, sexism, and so on. Or which has (an) author(s) who also have a history of having engaged In aspects like these.

If your rec is good to go, here’s what you have to do! If you are able please provide a link to the post to reblog - this makes it a lot easier on us!If the game is 18+What language/program the game is in (Twine, Choicescript, Ren'py, etc.)If the game has a currently playable demo. I can’t find a game and can’t remember the title, help!

If you’re struggling to find a beloved game and can’t remember the title–go to our Reddit and see if it’s there at the Lost & Found! If not, you can ask our community on the Reddit to help find it, or join our discord and ask there!

I noticed you failed to include x game on a list, so I will inform the author about it.

Please, don’t. The mods here are nothing but human, so we do our best to include as many games as we can remember, and frequently ask other people for help. However, this doesn’t mean we will include every single game in existence. We will forget, things will slip, so the least we ask of you is to leave a reply or send an ask and we will add it in. We promise we always keep a close eye on those.

The extra step of informing the author about this is unnecessary. The only thing you’re causing is either making the author feel left out or having them reach out to us to be added, which is essentially the same thing we ask of you to do. There’s no need to get a third party involved within something that can be easily tackled, so please respect us instead of putting our blog in a bad light.

The only suggestions we ignore and might erase are the ones we realize don’t fit the theme of the ask, or ones that don’t fit the guidelines specified in the question right below this.

A redesign of Tumblr mobile

(Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Tumblr in any way. Any opinions I express in this post are my own. I’m just somebody who has been on Tumblr for many years and wanted to try my hand at redesigning it. I recognize that there may be potential flaws in the following post, and these faults are 100% my own and no one else’s. In an ideal world i’d have access to insider metrics, but in any case this isn’t meant to be collectively exhaustive in any way.)

Hello there! I picked up this redesign project in January and i’ve decided to publish this now, since I wasn’t sure how long it’d take me to do a full write up. I’ve talked to around 100 people over the course of these 2 months and i’ve ran multiple rounds of tests, and I felt bad about leaving everyone hanging. So, here are the results with brief explanations for now! I intend to type out the full process and design rationale at a later date. If you received a message about this within the last 2 months and answered me, thank you so much! 

Alright, let’s get started. At the time of writing, Tumblr for iOS is currently on version 19.0. (Warning: this is a long post, there are badly compressed big gifs.)

Adding Tags

During interviews and in surveys (n=83, python and excel really came in clutch when sorting through the data haha), people often told me they avoided reblogging on mobile due to the large hassle of typing every tag out, opting to save them to drafts instead and add tags later. In terms of data, given that people hit reblog (82% of all users surveyed), 84% of these people also liked to add tags, so it was clear that facilitating the tagging system would be important. To help solve this, I designed a method for people to quickly add tags to post topics they often reblogged. As well as being accessible from pressing the tagging area on the posting screen, this can be accessed from the hold menu, to speed up the interaction even more. 

Another issue that commonly cropped up was the multitude of possible ways to tag a trigger warning. If somebody missed out a tagging method for a TW, they still ran the risk of seeing it on their dashboard. I added a toggle for tagging something as a trigger warning, which would suggest what others commonly added (and you can type your own). This saves people from having to tag “tw:xyz” “tw: xyz” “tw xyz” “cw xyz” etc. (you get the point!) and makes sure that “xyz” is unambiguously marked as a trigger warning. (Can internet strangers be trusted to tag sensitive content properly? Quick study here)

A bonus: A ‘read more’ button has been added back to mobile. Scrolling through long posts gets tedious sometimes, and people like to talk about more personal thoughts under read mores, so i’ve made it easier to access the feature.

Liking Posts

89% percent of users reported that they liked to hold on to posts for future retrieval. With this in mind, I added in a feature to categorize likes, making searching through your likes for future retrieval easier. The ability to like quickly without sorting is retained, added to a hold menu like a quick reblog. After liking, users are also prompted to reblog (PSA: reblogging helps spread OC around! please reblog OC you like more!)

Your likes can be found and sorted under your blog. 

Recommended For You

Tumblr is fundamentally about exploring and sharing content about topics you love, so I tried to rearrange the navigation to make it easier for users to look at new content about the things they like. The tabs are now rearranged so that new content is easier to find from the homescreen. To ensure relevance, followed tags are now toggles, so the user can pick and choose exactly what they want to see in the recommended tab if they want to. A radar post has also been placed in this tab to increase exposure to featured content creators. (Does being on the radar help out OC posters? Quick study here)

Exploring, and search results

Now that stuff recommended for you has been moved next to the dashboard, the explore page now defaults to trending posts. The top/recent page for tags you followed are now located in the search bar menu. Upon clicking on a search term, you can sort through recent/top posts and post types separately. For example, if you felt like looking at some new fanart that day, all you would have to do is sort by recent photo posts instead of having to sift through every recent post, making it easier for new OC to be discovered.

After getting home from a hard day of work I decided to spend some time on "Among Us". I booted up the game from steam, navigating my library filled with furry porn games and booted up the game at the bottom of the list. Historia usually kept her head down and eyes focused on the job, and today something in her was not having it. Her eyes became fuzzy when she looked at her spreadsheets, fingers limp when she tried to type anything, wrists tired when lifted her pen, notebook seeming to be too heavy for her hands, something was wrong with her. "Coffee?" Her friend said, setting a mug down on the desk without waiting for a response. She nodded.

"Thanks, Sasha." And her friend who had dropped off her coffee laughed in her face. It was Ymir. Tall, tanned, muscular Ymir with freckles across her face and short brown hair slicked back, Ymir who looked hardened by life and had a miniature scar on her nose to add to her ex-gangster look. "Oh. Ymir." She greeted, and her face broke into a wide smile as she pulled up a chair. "What is it?" She asked, and Ymir leaned back in her chair. "What?"

"No, nothing." She sipped her coffee, which she always took black with an extra spoon and a half of coffee. "I suppose it's, well," She chuckled and observed Historia from over the rim of her mug, which was patterned with newspapers, "It's dangerous." Her voice dropped to hardly a whisper, so Historia had to lean in to hear her properly.

"What is?" Historia hardly whispered back. "What's dangerous?"

"Us, I mean, Princess," Ymir's voice now almost a scoff, "Imagine if word got around the office that we were a thing." She chuckled again, and Historia flicked a note at her, "I'm sure they'd all support us but dear oh dear the things I could tell them." She lined the lip of her cup with her finger as Historia flushed bright red.

"But I'd like us to be more than just a thing." Historia said. "I'd like us to be able to 'be' a couple. Really 'be'. You know?" She finished, and Ymir crossed her legs by throwing it up.

"I agree. So, I'll meet you when we get off work?" Ymir said eventually, and the blonde almost burst, satisfied with her doing, the taller stood up and walked up to her desk again.

Some thoughts on Doctor Who: Flux Chapter One — The Halloween Apocalypse

There’s a clear theme of Knowledge in this episode, isn’t it? Or rather, a theme around differences in level of knowledge. Around who withholds knowledge and who are willing to disclose information.

There is the obvious, of course, of 13’s refusal to share things with her companion(s) — at this point it’s basically a character trait. But now we have the added flip of the Doctor not knowing certain things that others know as well. Karvanista refusing to disclose anything about the Division (and this is clearly a big deal to him, given how he uses lethal force on Yaz as well as the Doctor even though, as we learn later, his species has a species-wide thing about protecting humans). Swarm pointedly rubbing it in that his refusal to balance the level of knowledge between him and the Doctor means he has the tactical advantage. Yaz would’ve appreciated the poetic justice of the Doctor being in the position of vainly begging someone else for more info, if she’s known that is what’s going on.

Then there’s the Doctor’s “Why don’t I know about this? And who else does?” line — which smash cuts to a comedy bit with a couple of Sontarans. Like, the comedy Sontarans know more about the latest universe-threatening crisis than the Doctor does. Even the Victorian Mr. Williamson seems to know more about the need to fight an upcoming cataclysm than the Doctor does. The only other person who’s caught off-guard about the Flux as much as the Doctor is Vinder... except he’s explicitly positioned as a sentry. One who stands guard at an Observation Outpost. That he he has to find out about a crisis himself is the point of his job — so that others can get advanced warning from him.

Indeed, the narrative is setting up to be a strong argument on why clear and open communication is better than the alternative. The people in the cottage in the Arctic got a warning... but no briefing on what to do when that alarm goes off, leading to it being ignored. I'm not sure to what extent things would've turned out better if Karvanista and the Doctor has gotten on the same page about the Flux and the Lupari’s true plans for humanity — but it’s conceivable that everything wouldn’t have been so dire at the end if the Doctor has been working together with Karvanista from the start. The Victorian Mr. Williamson, though? Him not bothering to either explain himself properly or come up with a plausible excuse has made him look like a lunatic exactly at the point where he is low on manpower and could have used some outside support.

In any case, the second most interesting thing about this whole complex is Dan’s opening scene. On the one hand, yes, this is shaping up to be the world’s most obvious bit of foreshadowing, ever: the scene signposting that a piece of Liverpool’s history will become relevant is followed immediately by a scene where the new companion establishes that he knows a lot about Liverpool’s history. On the other hand, in a story where there’s so much withholding of information — the villain literally gloats about how his monopoly on the relevant information is his strength — the first thing we know about Dan is that he is a self-appointed museum guide, that his passion is in giving information away for free. This, if nothing else, makes him a nice contrast to everyone else.

The most interesting thing about this whole complex is arguably Claire. Her scenes are deliberately ambiguous, but I interpret the clues we’re given in the dialogue so far to mean that she's doing a Sally Sparrow. That she's part of a Blink 2.0 plot: a stable time loop in which her interactions with the Doctor do not happen in the normal order, but the information they exchange between each other will, once the stable time loop finishes carrying itself out, makes everything make sense. Except... except this time Claire has an apparently unscheduled meeting with the Doctor, they exchange zero useful information, and then Claire is apparently ambushed before she can get to the scheduled meeting with the Doctor. Claire’s last words to Team TARDIS is a reassuring “It’s OK. We’ll see each other again”, but can we be sure they will meet again if a Weeping Angel has managed to zap Claire before that future meeting can happen?

It'd be like the ending of Blink, but right after Sally walks out of the DVD store, an Angel gets the jump on her, and her dossier with the DVD conversation’s transcript never makes it to the Doctor’s hands.

It's very clever from a writing-craft point of view, of course: it’s invoking Blink with all of Blink’s greatest hits — the Angels, the aesthetics of horror in the dark, the stable time loops — but this time with a twist, with an extra punch, so it isn't just rehashing Blink. But if this reading is true, then that implies that Claire and the future(?) Doctor was in the middle of weaponising a stable time loop, and the stable time loop broke. That could mean something has gone very, very wrong with time (which would fit well with the Flux’s description as something that disobeys every law of time and space). Something paradoxical, you may say.

(Or it could just be that the stable time loop was even more complicated than what Claire has been told, and that the apparent "unscheduled" meeting was in fact a second scheduled meeting she just wasn't told about, and that Team TARDIS will have to rescue her to bring her back to 2021 Liverpool to get back on-track for the first scheduled meeting — but then we're back to the theme of knowledge sharing and not-sharing again. I am sure Claire would have appreciated being told that the Angel attack on Halloween 2021 is nothing to worry about.)

I’ve seen some people complain about how this episode builds up to no conclusion, just a parade of Dangling Future Plot Threads at the end, but like... in a sense, that fits with the theme as well. The sheer size of the Dangling Future Plot Thread Parade underscores how much we don't know, in a context where what we know is on par with what the Doctor knows, and the gap in the Doctor's knowledge is explicitly highlighted as a tactical disadvantage. It is, if nothing else, thematically coherent.
