Next week Jews around the world will celebrate the holiday of Purim and read the Book of Esther (Megilat Esther).  This verse talks about Mordecai- how he knew in his heart that Ha-Shem will save the Jewish people, regardless of whether or not Esther took a stand. Yet, he tells her that maybe this was her moment to rise for her people. Maybe, just maybe, she was born for this very reason.

This Purim it’s time to think about where you stand - will you stay silent?

Yoshiro Mori, the head of the Japanese Olympic Organizing Committee was forced to resign after saying women talk to much. He comments alarmed women’s rights activists. Momoko Nojo, a college student, began a her #dontbesilent campaign asking for Mori’s ouster that gained over 150,000 signatures in less than two weeks.

Congrats to Nojo for her remarkable accomplishment. I’ll bet Mori thinks Nojo talks too much as too!

I had no intention of making a statement when I started painting this lady. But I certainly did. Before I knew it I was staring at the lower half of her face and just painted that word, “Silence”. It was a pretty powerful moment when I stepped back and asked myself where it had come from. As an artist I want to make an impact. I don’t want to just be trendy or just make pretty paintings.
