Posting under the cut for those in the U.S. who validly want to remain spoiler free until release. That is not me though 🤣 If you're also dying for some light spoilers join me under the cut!

It seems like Google books has a "preview" of the first pages, it's a little janky but I'm just so hype. This is one of my lifelong favorite series and I wasn't sure if I'd ever see new content... growing up and getting older does have some perks, doesn't it?

SO, after being sick for days and in so much pain and discomfort, a day on a anime con that was so hot I got a huge migraine right at the beginning of it that made me not being able to enjoy it fully because I was in so much pain, a bunch of days after it feeling so sad about the anime con that I unfortunately wasted and that I was looking forward for so much.. I was finally able to finished reading the book today!!

Some comments about it, spoilers below!!:

The book was so good! It definitely had the vibe of the first books from the main story, not as dark as the later ones, but more will come to this new series :] I'm so curious!!

I got back and also read other people's posts about it!!

So this book takes place between book 6 and 7, while I was reading I was always attentive to details that would point to where this book takes place, and like some people already mentioned, there's this part where they mention when Camicazi was captured on book 8, so I thought this one would take place after book 8, but yeah, I think between books 6 and 7 makes more sense

I've read the other books in 2023, smaller details aren't in my brain anymore, if you found any details that do or don't line up with the timeline let me know!! I always care about time lines too much and would love to get my brain refreshed 🤣

I missed my sons and daughter so much 🤧

Actually I thought this book would take place not so long after book 12, I still hope someday we get to see things right after book 12!

I'm so sad because I pre-ordered the new book last month and it's delayed for some reason and I don't have it yet :(

Synopsis : Orion Pax met a bot within the new cave section, the mysterious bot suffers amnesia and Orion wants to help them recover their memories and uncover secrets within Cybertron.

Prologue II >>

Prologue I

"Hey! Get back here at once!"

Two guards are chasing after a blue and red bot, who is laughing to himself as he takes sharp turns in  order to escape the guards. He runs through the crowd causing the guards to lose sight of the cogless miner.

Orion Pax quickly gets onto the train that would lead him back to the mines, he grins to himself and pops a few energon cubes into his mouth.

"Easy peasy~" he grins as he leans on the wall.

What a day, he couldn't wait to tell D-16 about his research at the Archives. There's a lot of things he wants to talk about and there's might be a chance for them to find the Matrix of Leadership.

As soon the train reaches the mines, he steps out and goes straight to find his friend, D-16.

His optics spots D-16 pushing a cart full of energon, he grins and starts calling out to the bot. "Hey, D!" he calls out as the grey mech turns his helm and glares at the red blue bot "Orion, where were you?!" he hiss. "You've been missing for hours!".

"It's only like one hour! I was quick, don't worry" assure Orion.

"Quick?! You've missed half the day's shift! If anything happens, I ain't helping you with your workload!" D-16 says in exasperation, unloading the energon into the crate. He clearly dislikes his friend breaking the protocols. Always get himself in trouble and he won't be there to save him if gets himself caught by those guards.

"Oh—" Orion's optic widens in realization, he didn't know he was gone for THAT long. "Well, uhh...heh heh...I'll get to work then" the bot rubs the back of his neck. Guess he has to start his shift before Darkwing or Elita finds out he's been snitching work.

D-16 rolls his optics as he loads the last energon into the crate and he will be done for the day. It was tiring and his body felt sore, the workload has been increasing day by day. They barely get any rest, if they do, they only get a few minutes or so.

He closes the crate and watches it get taken away.

"Is this all it?" Sentinel says in disbelief, holding a data pad in his hands. He slams the data pad on the table causing everything on the table to be knocked over. He received the news of the mining progression and it wasn't good at all.

Their energon source is depleting and it won't be enough for everyone, let alone... for THEM! The Quintesson.

He has to find a way.

"Argh! There has to be a way!" he vents angrily. His optics turn to Arachnid, "Ready the troops for another expedition, now" he said as the femme nods and exit the office. Once he is alone, he turns around and calls out.

"Zephyrstrike! You told me that everything is going smoothly!" he said, coming out from the shadows is a slim mech in copper and black pallets.

"My master, please. Be patient, my team and I are doing our best to find it" Zephyrstrike said in a calm and soothing tone. "Patience! Patience that's all you said—" Sentinel growls, stomping over to the shorter mech. "I will be doomed once the Quintesson finds out that I barely provide energon for them!" he said.

"I know, master but finding the Matrix isn't easy. SteelHazard is trying his best to locate it, he hasn't had enough sleep for the pass cycles...." the mech said. "Also— I bear good news, master. We have found a new mining area within the deepest caves of Cybertron. It will give us enough supplies for the next 3 moon cycles" Zephyrstrike assures the 'Prime'.

Sentinel quirk a brow at the news, a new mining area means more energon and more energon means more work for the cogless miners. The 'Prime' fixes his structure, "Very well, tell the mining operators about it and make sure everything goes well. Understand?" he said.

Zephyrstrike smiles and bows, "I understand, master" he said before disappearing into the shadows, back where he came from while Sentinel turns and leaves for another expedition.

"Listen up, all of you miners!" Darkwing's voice boom, causing all the miners to stop whatever they are doing. "The exploration team has discovered a new cave system. You know the drill! We call out your names, get your equipment and start digging!" he said. Some of the miners weren't so happy with the news they have received, another cave to mine and they have to work more than usual.

Their superiors start to call out each bots names and surprise that both Orion and D-16 were included.

Orion let out a groan, "Ugh, really? We barely finish with this cave and now we have another?" he said. "Come on, Orion. We are doing this for the good of Cybertron, for everyone and Sentinel Prime" D-16 said, picking up his mining equipment. "Yeah, I know" Orion smiles as he does the same. Both of them went to the station and were ready to be transported to the new cave.

"Hey, at least we get to see something new" D-16 smiles, nudging his friend. "Who knows if we will find the Matrix in that cave" he said. "Hm, you're right! But—I'm going to miss going to the Archives now" he pouts. "Well, at least now I don't have to cover your aft anymore" D-16 said.

"Are you sure about that?" Orion grins as they board the train as it takes them to the new mining section.

Since it's now been over a week since doom of the darkwing came out I think I'm gonna start posting slightly spoilery stuff (this is major spoilery stuff btw) for me and the other two people that have read it over the next couple of days just as a warning if you're waiting to read it and don't want spoilers!

So, warning: Spoilers for doom of the darkwing!!!

CRESSIDA WHAT THE HELL IM SO CONFUSED

WHAT?? HUH???

WHAT DOES THIS MEANNN?

IM GOING TO COMBUST

I have four theories about this whole thing, which are most likely completely wrong because let's be honest, there's not much point to guessing what Cressida Cowell will do next, but here they are anyway:

1. This comes from a theory that all the Bog Burglars are descended from Chinhilda that someone posted on here a while ago, that I cannot find for the life of me, but if anyone knows who posted it then please credit them because it's such a cool idea. Basically this would mean that Camicazi is a descendant of Chinhilda, and therefore have a claim to the throne just as much as Hiccup, and this might lead to them fighting later, but I really just can't see that happening to be honest.

2. Camicazi ends up becoming queen by marrying Hiccup which really weirds me out. It was kind of insinuated at the end of the 12th book that they could get together, but although I'm not completely against it, the whole idea just feels a bit out of character to me.

3. Hiccup becomes a crazy evil dictator and Camicazi has to fight him to save everyone. This idea will make a hell of a lot more sense if you've read Creativecookie's new wilderwest fic on ao3 (ITS SO GOOD GO AND READ IT).

4. I am completely wrong about everything and have misinterpreted it all. They will actually become enemies because Camicazi sings an annoying song about his hair at him and Hiccup gets mad, and the queen piece just signifies that Camicazi is going become an avid chess enthusiast.

I just really hope that this whole enemies idea will resolve itself in a way that means they're not ACTUALLY enemies it's just some kind of intriguing plot device because if my children end up hating each other it will be as if the world has been turned upside down, thoroughly shaken, and then harassed with fireballs. Anyway, knowing Cressida Cowell, she'll find a way to end everything in a really good way, I mean just look at book 12, I genuinely can't think of a better ending that I've read, especially for a kid's book series.

If anyone has other ideas, pleaseee comment them because I need someone to talk obsessively about theories with.

This gives me an impression of reader honing their sorcery powers in secret, that it runs in the family and they have access to books and studies normal people wouldn't. If we're still in the Invincible universe, I think reader wouldn't make much of an effort to befriend anyone, but they would be considered odd since they always try to hide their books, spend their time alone with their studies.

The only time Mark would notice you in the school, he would be passing by you and noticing a sigil as you close your book, it looks painfully familiar to a ring of energy that subdued a villain, he didn't spot whoever invoked it but now he worried he might have to keep an eye on you.

And the next time he sees you, you're saving the Guardians of the Globe with some kind of magic, it wasn't like whatever powers Eve had neither was it anything like Darkwing's gadgets, this is something you could conjure yourself.

He manages to get close to you, a few feet away. You make eye contact for a painful minute and all he says is "Hey!", nervous and unsure. Then panic fuels him when you look away and practically glitch out of existence, disappearing and refusing to negotiate with anyone related to the GDA or GotG, the only two things he gets to say to you is "Hey" and "Wait"

Noting that the line "It's a bad business, this love business" is paralleled in book 12, although I don't know if it was intentional or not.

I feel like this moment highlights how Cami views Hiccup as an idol and a hero first and foremost. That their friendship might be rooted in Cami's respect an admiration for Hiccup as a Incredible Hero. Not that they aren't friends by any means, but her initial reaction seems like surprise if not betrayal that he wasn't the "perfect hero" she thought he was. In contrast Fishlegs was completely unphased by the reveal, and I think that's because their friendship was rooted in a lifetime of genuine love and camaraderie. Fishlegs' perception of Hiccup didn't change at all when he saw the slavemark.

How to Seize a Dragon's Jewel (10)

"Hiccup lied awkwardly" So he did believe that Cami turned her back on him, which probably hurt. She promises to never turn her back on him again and she works hard to make up and prove that she has his back again, which is really good, although to me it still seems like she is looking at him as a Hero and not a Full Human. Like her perception is "I was wrong about him not being the perfect hero I thought he was. He is a perfect hero and I shouldn't have doubted" and I think it should be "He is not the perfect hero I thought he was, and that's good, he is a person with intricacies and nuance and strengths and weaknesses and he is my friend" or something. Or I could be talking out my butt here 😂

("It's bad business, this 'love' business" is a parallel said by Stoik in book 8, although I'm not sure if it's intentional or not)

When The Windwalker Changed

"A" rebel "Leader"? Possibly implying that he is no longer king, or is one of multiple Leaders? (Dreardred and his people call him "a" leader, which could be ignorance, but this excerpt is from Cressida's 'Notes from the Translator' where she also uses "a" instead of "the" Leader. Or I'm probably over-thinking this whole Leader thing lol)

✨️Theories✨️

Hiccup never wanted to be King, maybe after some time he wants to entrust Cami to the Throne and they stage his death? Then we would be free to continue his research and publish his books

Maybe (in the interest of absolutely dunking on dragon enslavers) Cami takes the throne as acting Queen so Hiccup can focus on his efforts to free Dragons? He can't effectively rule the Wilderwest while so incredibly far east anyway, so someone must be in charge while he's away

Hiccup and Cami disagree on how to rule the Wilderwest and become rivals (while I hate to lose her in the friend group, I think she'd make a fun and witty adversary) and she possibly usurps the throne from Hiccup making him a "rebel" Leader

Maybe Camicazi's crush becomes more prominent? Cami looks to Hiccup like an idol and Hero, and that is definitely a crush and not true love. So maybe she gets to know him as a whole person, and not just her Hero, and falls in love in a true way?

Or the opposite happens and when her perception of him is shattered it helps propel her into a rival or enemy arc?

Which I guess could then ultimately lead to a real love/friendship ending

I'm just babbling now

Maybe a new civilized world goes against Camicazi's love for crime, thievery, and chaos, and she becomes a rival against hiccup, fighting to keep the bickering tribes over a kingdom as one? Making her a "villian" to society but overall not too villainy. People don't change overnight after all

You would assume spending three days in stasis would allow a person time to think.

On the contrary, for three days, Elita thought about nothing. She felt nothing. The yawning ache in her spark was nonexistent, just for a few days, and her body relaxed as it enjoyed its final few days of strength.

She wasn’t fully conscious of it, but her spark was failing. Somewhere, in some deep recess of her mind, she knew it.

She just didn’t have the energy to care.

The next time she recovered any sort of awareness, she found a hole in her chest where her cog should have been.

In itself, this wasn’t very strange, considering she had lived the vast majority of her life without one. But what was odd—and what finally pulled her out of the deep abyss of slumber—was a white, glowing wire protruding from that hole in her chest.

It didn’t hurt. But it coursed with embers of energy—wisps of power that weren’t unlike the spark-deep fire that had left her in this state. She shifted her body around it, and felt it even in her back.

In an attempt to see where it began or ended, she reached out and pulled at it. It sent a minor jolt through her system. She gasped.

…wait.

…It was nice to hear her own voice again.

Where was she, anyway? She knew medical bays—and this wasn’t one. It didn’t have the lights, the smell of sterile air—no. The world around her was dark, save for the glowing cable wrapped around her spark. The only sounds came from her—and even then, her frame was oddly quiet.

With nothing else to do, she pulled at the cable again. She fought the spark deep reflex to let go, and shuddered—loosened her grip, but didn’t release it.

It wasn’t attached to anything, but it did seem to float upwards. She ran her fingers across it, drinking in its energy—

—and suddenly, she was back in the Well of Allsparks, in freefall. Arms wrapped around Orion. Power—fire, unlike any she had ever known—shooting through her for the first time.

She jolted back. Blinked out the visions that danced behind her head.

When she opened her eyes again, there were two cables wrapped around her spark, loosely woven together in the abyss.

…at this point, curiosity had gotten the better of her. She grabbed the other, and was treated with the immediate sight of Orion Pax raising a middle finger to Darkwing.

(…he thought her back was turned. It had been—but she was getting to see it now. It was delightful.)

Two more winding cables emerged from her spark as she watched Orion’s memories play out in front of her eyes—D-16’s and Bee’s. And as she watched their memories—of meeting Orion Pax, of the darkness of mines and the light of the surface—a billion more burst from her as she gasped.

Like fiber optics, they wound together, packed into the tiny space that her cog once occupied in her chest. They wound around her spark, their weight heavy, yet feathery.

Time.

This was her gift. The power given to her by Alpha Trion himself. Time itself danced before her eyes, captured in the sparks and memories of everyone she had ever loved.

And it was a gift she had squandered.

…right?

No. She shoved that thought down with the vow that she would never regret it. Orion—no, right, Optimus—would never have survived if she hadn’t done what she did. Seeing it play out from both of their perspectives, she was certain of it now.

But her life—that was her own. Her choices were hers and hers alone, and if they had led her here, then so be it.

Which led her back to the question: had she truly squandered her own life in defense of another? Was this her eternal fate, her Allspark—doomed to the abyss with only the memories of everyone she had ever cared about?

She looked at the cables surrounding her spark, willing them to provide her answers. They didn’t. Stubbornly, they floated upwards, the answers they held in the past clear, yet their future frustratingly uncertain.

All she could see were the memories.

And that, in of itself, could never capture the whole of what time truly was, could it? The present was just the moment in which the past and future met, held hands in an endless moment, and all she had here was one half of it.

There were other halves to these lifelines. They were sticking out of her back right now.

She grabbed those cables, and forced them to loop around so that she could see them. She saw some that ended, some that went on for miles and miles—and yet, she didn’t dare look too hard. Somewhere, nestled in this web of lifelines, was her own—and the answer to her own fate was probably the only one she could stomach right now.

Her own lifeline wrapped the tightest around her spark. It made it easy to find, in the chaos.

It had an end. In fact, it was a hell of a lot shorter than some of the rest. Not enough to be worrying, not enough to make her think her death was imminent. But the lifeline that wrapped around her own the tightest went on, for just a little bit longer.

She blinked as she processed what that meant.

Orion outlived her. Not by much—but he did.

“Typical,” she scoffed absently. Although, if she was being honest with herself, she was grateful for it. It meant she found success in her role as his guard.

She let the future slide out of her hands, though, and pondered that.

Perhaps she found the ultimate success as a guard. Her role as his confidant, though? Commander and friend? …how could she accomplish either of those if she was dead?

Sweet Primus below, she did not want to die. Not anymore. She still had Bee’s training to worry about. Still had that drink to grab with Chromia. She still had to punch both Shockwave and Megatron in the face. Her hope lived on, nestled in a spark that was worthy of the Matrix, and oh, there was so much she had to tell him.

The proof of her own survival rested in her back. Determination welled up in her spark.

She had no cog, but it didn’t matter. She was enough. She was whole. She was Ariel, she was Elita-1, both in equal measure. Her past and her future selves held hands to create this moment, in which she could prove herself better than anyone. Even her own self defined limits.

Lifelines in her spark, she transformed around them, so that she was facing, not the past, but the future. She took hold of them. Felt every single one of them tense around her spark.

And, before she could think twice about it, she pulled.

It sent a jolt of fire through her—but she was used to the burn by now. She did it again, already readying the next hand as she worked. The lives of everyone she loved slid through her, and she drank in their memories and their futures like it was energon.

She was going to get out of this.

She had to.

There came fire in her spark, but she shoved the pain down, and screamed a challenge to the Allspark itself—was this the best they could do? Try and hold her down with the fire she commanded?

Well.

Then maybe she, like her beloved Optimus, had earned her name.

Proved herself better than anyone.

Even than death.

If she thought waking up in the abyss was strange, the next sensation rendered it fairly normal, by comparison.

She jolted. The ground came slow underneath her, but it came all the same. Simultaneously, she was light as air, and yet she still had gravity, pulling at her gently.

And the only thing in her field of vision was blue.

Energon?

Blue eyes blinked at her, wider than moons, and she let their owner scoop her up. She knew those eyes, didn’t she? That infinite sadness behind them, lifted if even for a moment?

She felt thrusters, and then they broke above the surface. She gasped, and continued to do so even as they crashed—harmlessly—onto solid ground.

And before she could process anything—the renewed strength in her spark, the cool sensation of dusky air—there came the feeling of arms around her, and a face in her neck.

“Orion?”

He nodded, but his voice betrayed a stifled sob. “Do not scare me like that again, Ariel!”

Their frames dripped energon, but she didn’t care—she threw her own arms around him like her life depended on it.

She cackled—the sound of her ugly laughter echoing in the chamber of…wherever they were. She didn’t care. She lived on. For all she had sacrificed, for all she had proven, she had earned the right to indulge in the pleasures of living, for a moment.

“I’m okay,” she croaked, and she meant it.

She wasn’t entirely sure where they were, but she agreed to linger, at least to catch her breath. Wherever they were, it was beautiful, at least—pools of energon alight in colors, multicolored stalactites dripping down and glowing, illuminating the long dilapidated workbench nearby.

That was before Optimus smiled at her, knowingly, and explained that he had brought her to where the Matrix had been forged, by the hands of the thirteen.

She startled.

“Vector Sigma?” she hissed.

His knowing smile erupted into a full blown grin.

“You brought me to Vector Sigma on the off chance their power still lingered here, and then dumped me in a pool of energon hoping it would bring me back?”

“Hey, I went in with you, first of all,” he shot back. “Second, legend’s always said that the power of the Matrix lingers here. I figured, if anything would work…”

She nodded, understanding. She could feel it, even, embers in the air clinging to her frame even as she sat by his side.

He shrugged. “Besides. This was a place I had been wanting to find since I became Prime. You just gave me a reason to.”

“Way to make a girl feel special,” she taunted.

He chuckled. The goofy grin didn’t drop as he scooted closer to her.

“You are.”

She felt her face turn hot.

They weren’t words she was unused to hearing, especially from Orion Pax—but it felt different this time. The weight of revelations she’d had while unconscious echoed in her ears, and his own determination to save her sent a fresh rush of heat through her spark.

He thought she was special. Sure, she had spent a lifetime proving it—but it wasn’t Orion in front of her, it was Optimus. Favored of Primus himself, and he thought her special.

(Unless he was like her—his past and future holding hands to create this moment in which he was both.)

“I feel like you’d have done this for anyone,” she declared, looking away. Her pedes dipped into the pool of energon in front of her, tiny ripples dancing up her frame, and she drank in that sensation.

“Maybe,” he said, and she could hear the shrug in his voice. “I don’t like watching people hurt because of me. I hated that it was you, though.”

“I was the only one who could. Alpha Trion gave me this power for a reason. To protect you.”

He shook his head. “To stand beside me in equal might.”

She stared at him, quizzically.

“The Matrix told me,” he explained. “You are a million things more than my guard, Elita, and I have so much more I want to say. Just, for now…promise me something, please?”

She nodded, and scooted closer to him. He took her hands in his.

“Unless you think it’s absolutely necessary, please don’t do whatever that was again. Almost losing you was unbearable.”

Stubborn little optimist, she thought. Her hands wrapped around his.

“It goes both ways,” she vowed. “Unless I think it’s necessary.” She took a deep breath. “Just, let me say something?”

He nodded. Absently, his thumbs rubbed over the back of her hands.

She glanced down. Hands wrapped loosely around each other, just like their lifelines. She thought of how annoying he had been, a lifetime ago in the dark of the mines, but how he had ultimately been the one to bring them light. She thought of how beautiful he was, when he wanted nothing but for her to live.

No going back, now.

“…I think I love you.”

She didn’t dare look at him.

How crappy a bodyguard was she, to outright confess to her crush on her charge? But she was more than a guard, wasn’t she? He had admitted that himself, and she had never been one to mince words, anyway.

She dared a look, to find his eyes wide, and his jaw on the floor. She dared a smile—shy—meanwhile she mentally celebrated the look on his face. She broke a Prime with just a few simple words.

Maybe this was the ultimate proof that he was still the same Orion Pax, on the inside. Putty in her hands, after all this time. Beautiful, inside and out.

He hadn’t breathed, but when he finally did, she could hear him shudder.

“Since when?”

She scoffed. “I just figured this out as I was dying, Pax, don’t make me try and pinpoint that!”

“I’m not,” he protested, his surprise melting into the most beautiful smile she had ever seen. “I’m just…well. I suppose I never thought I would hear those words from you.”

She giggled, because was it really that far-fetched? Maybe it would’ve been, a lifetime ago, when they were nothing but miners trying to survive. They were more than what they were born for, though. They had the privilege to fight, now, to make something of themselves. In truth, they already had—a Prime and a commander—but even then, they could learn and grow from that.

He lowered a kiss to her hands, and then to her cheeks, and all the while she giggled madly as she returned them. Perhaps she was truly mad—sick with the delight of living, and having the privilege to fall in love.

Of having this moment, in which their pasts and futures could hold hands amidst eternity.

Out of pure curiosity, Does mercy have a love interest the same as her brother? If so is it an actual character in the show or an OC, if not ignore this ask!

I'm a bit torn on her romance, honestly... I like romance so I figured I might give her one eventually, but so far I haven't settled on anything. I thought she would have a crush on Rex when they first met, then get turned away from the idea bc he was dating Eve, and then she would hate him when she learned he was a cheater. Also I thought it would be funny if Eve/Rex broke up and the Grayson twins started dating one half of the relationship afterwards lol. But no, their relationship gets better after he changes, but they remain just friends for the rest of their time together.

I thought she might like Darkwing II too, I briefly touched on that in this post here, but... he has like zero time with the other characters (both in show and in comics) before he disappears, so it's hard to really put the two together. I figure that in Bad End! AU, she marries a Viltrumite eventually. But going into that would have comic spoilers, so I'll keep that to myself for now lol.

Maybe Mercy is just doomed to have brief crushes on characters that are going to die/disappear soon 😭
