Mystery Meat - dprewatch2021

I promised myself I’d start today so start I shall! Screencaps and reactions will be under the cut, today’s ep is number 1, Mystery Meat!

Side note- Jack canonically lived through a war and was forced to eat horse meat! I don’t know where to file this information :)

Hello Danny my old friend I’ve done this to myself again.

Maddie says “Two more days, and it’s done!” And when Jack says very loudly “DID YOU SAY IT’S DONE?!” she does NOTHING to tell him otherwise, she just... smiles at him. 

Is it any wonder these two have one complete body count between them?

From left to right you have ???, trapezoid, breadstick. I’d say at least there are diverse body types but Maddie is the exception, not the rule.

Everyone in this show but Tucker has parent issues. But also your goth phase is not comparable to your friend literally half dying, stay on task here Sam.

I don’t hate Sam, I hate the writers for making Sam a realistic vegan, okay?

Okay, sidenote, it PISSES me off that they were like, how can we make her seem more EXTRA and they just renamed Vegan to “Ultra-Recyclo-Vegetarian” She doesn’t eat animals or animal byproducts, she’s a fucking vegan fuck off.

Tucker can tell what Danny ate yesterday just by smelling him. He’s a fucking werewolf. Your AU’s are correct.

I kinda prefer this exorcist vibe to the the little small wisp of ghost sense that happens through the rest of the series tbh

I like how this is just chill like, there are adults around but hey beat each other up I guess.

When ur friend passes out before you at the sleepover so you just stay up doing nothing because this isn’t your house.

The fact that this doesn’t raise alarm bells again tells me Jack and Maddie really need to not be parents.

Hello Phandom! A lot of my friends expressed interest in rewatching Danny Phantom and combing through it episode by episode. I was going to do this myself, but I figured it'd be more fun with others! How it works is like this: 52 weeks in a year, 53 episodes of DP.

Every week we watch one episode and leave some thoughts about it! Once we reach the end of a season, there's a one week "break" where you can also leave a review about the season as a whole.

This is supposed to be a low-stakes commitment — twenty minutes in a week, because I myself have university to worry about! Even still, you are free to miss or skip weeks, contribute to the conversation without having seen the episode, or even watch without commenting.

Ok let’s go! Week 1!

Mystery Meat (1.01)

Ok for those who don't know me I'm Brazilian and that means that I watched the majority of cartoons in portuguese, that means that until today I have never watched Danny Phantom's English dub. The Brazilian version is still better in my opnion but I'm definitely biased. Sam's VA knocked out of the park I loved it so much.

MM is a great pilot episode for a 2000s cartoon, settles all of the recurrent characters personalities and names and the animation is nice. Really love seeing Danny's hyper clumsy and anxious early days.

I have no idea why but my gut says so score things...

Week 2

Parental Bonding (1.02)

We all know Butch Hartman loves banking in the not like other girls trope while also making fun of quirky girl, c'mon you can hate women but don't be so obvious. I don't know why he likes making Sam undesirable and an asshole and make fun of goth/geek culture, like sir this show is about ghosts fighting who do you think is watching this??

Paulina was an asshole and I love her so much exclusively because she was the first latina I've ever seen depicted as the popular pretty girl in a cartoon and as a latina myself it felt kind of good. She's an asshole still, its a love/hate relationship here.

Sam being mad about Paulina bashing Danny was a delight, you go girl, go defend your friend.

Lancer was a lot ruder than I remembered, the fanfics completely changed my image of him.

Subtlety is dead and it's ghost haunts this show, SamxDanny has been a ship since day 2 huh, I mean good for him I guess but she deserves better, season 1 Danny is so selfish it's infuriating.

I have noticed that Valerie is taller than Tucker, Tall Girl Supremacy baby!

6/10 spooks (-2 for Danny but + 1 for cute Sam)

Week 4

Attack of the Killer Garage Sale (1.04)

Sam's rich privilege coming through! How has Tucker not notice she has a lot of money? The amount of Doc Martens she probably has called me poor in 5 languages.

Once again Danny is very selfish and learns his lessons through the power of ghost violence, please develop morals soon, your bones will thank you.

Paulina looks amazing in Sam's clothes, because Sam is super stylish.

it's Skulker hour baby! I hate his tiny skull choker so much, I love watching him getting his ass kicked.

Today's problematic bit is: the Danny and Tucker cuddle being used as blackmail. Toxic masculinity? In my 2004 cartoon? Yes.

Anyway, Sampson the Purple Back Gorilla is the true MVP. Move over Danny, the new king is here.

Week 6

What You Want (1.06)

I'm going to have to hand it to the Danny Phantom writing team, they're not afraid to give their characters flaws. Being jealous is natural but you shouldn't let it control you.

Once again, trans Danny is canon, there's no reason for him to be this upset about Desiree touching his chest.

Got a big fat crush on Desiree, chaotic queen of my heart.

I really like Danny and Tucker's friendship, the phandom often forgets that they're super close. Most fics brush their bond to the side and I feel like that ignores a huge part of their characters and how they interact.

Got really uncomfy with the Native American imagery used for absolutely nothing. Why did the Ghosto Separeto or whatever it was called have to be a dream catcher?

I gotta admit Sayonara Pussycat is a pretty good joke, I chuckled a little.

Greatest part of the episode is noticing that Danny developed morals, you go boy, go learn right from wrong.
