victorian vampire literature is so thematically rich. carmilla is about slowly warming up to a way of life that you used to think was disgusting. christabel is about the dangers that come with unguarded compassion. dracula is about finding a synthesis between "the new ways" and "the old ways" of the world in order to live as fully as possible. the giaour is about a man dying alone of racism poisoning.

I know at this point people are vaguely familiar with Makt Myrkranna, the Icelandic Dracula "translation" whose plot differs significantly from the original, but I finally got my hands on an annotated English version of it from a local used bookstore and I just want to say, for those who may not be aware. What the heck.

The author was apparently a big fan of the portion of the novel where Jonathan is trapped in Dracula's castle, because he made it significantly longer. But even more noticeably, once it's over, the novel abruptly transitions to third person, losing the epistolary format and then... just... speedruns (some of) the rest of the plot of Dracula like it doesn't even matter. Apparently the latter section goes through a 93% reduction in word count. It's so bizarre and also such terrible writing. I still can't believe this is real.

I specifically detest how Eggers is going around proudly telling that "it's Ellen's story", but in the same breath he talks about how he gave hysteria to Ellen, and makes it her main feature, trailers are showing that she has death wish now, Ellen is now into Orlok based on trailers and interviews, etc. It's just clearly fanficton bs, like he's adding previously non-existing backstory and traits to Ellen to twist her character into another character for his damn fanfic.

On the one hand, I understand fleshing out the background of characters who had a pretty compact representation in an original story that was more 'Get from point A to point B, hustle, hustle.' It adds meat to a story's bones.

On the other hand, yes, Bobby Egg seems to be in full Ao3 mode at this point. Neither the 1922 or 1979 versions did Ellen as dirty as Eggers' version seems set to, with his grand re-imagining boiling down to 'What if she was crazy-death wish-horny and no one Understood Her like Orlok does and actually all the human characters were jerks or lame (except zany cool un-Van Helsing who gets the idea for the sunrise kill all by himself no girl ideas allowed <3)? What if??'

It's just Francis' same old BS but in gothic cosplay.
