So here’s the thing. It’s 1996 or thereabouts, and I’m rising 20. I go to London for a meetup of folks from a set of interrelated Usenet newsgroups.
I end up staying the night at the home of a woman in her… I want to say forties? along with another woman from the meetup. They had been making cautious comments to each other about knowing ‘the odd Star Trek fan’ and then about being an ‘odd Star Trek fan’, which I later learnt was them basically feeling each other out to see if it was safe to mention Spirk.
So when we got to her house the host was very excited to show us all her Star Trek fan stuff, including various home-printed zines she had acquired at cons and the like, all stuffed full of Spirk fanfics. And here’s me, with a total of maybe about five or six half-episodes of any sort of Star Trek under my belt and completely new to the idea that it is even possible to create material based on other people’s creations.
And these two lovely patient ladies spent an evening explaining to me the basics of fandom and Kirk/Spock slash and showed me art and stories and fan video edits (on VHS tape).
And me, I had no investment in pairing Kirk and Spock (and in general I don’t seem to have whatever the shipping instinct is that so many people seem to have), so I allowed that the stories were well written and the pictures of naked people were very well drawn, but I was perhaps not as enthusiastic as they were hoping, and I still wonder (I am no longer in touch with anyone from those groups) if they thought I was homophobic.
Poll Tuesday
I feel like I’m exposing myself a little bit with this bc my introduction to fic is soo random I think, but whatever your answer please tell me the story! I wanna know haha

Site Update - 2/9/2024
Tumblr media
Hi Pillowfolks!
Today is the day. Post Queueing & Scheduling is finally here for everyone. Hooray! As always we will be monitoring closely for any unexpected bugs so please let us know if you run into any.
Tumblr media
New Features/Improvements
✨ *NEW* Queue & Schedule - One of the most highly requested features has finally arrived at Pillowfort. Users can now effortlessly Queue or Schedule a post for a future time.
Queue helps keep your Pillowfort active by staggering posts over a period of hours or days. Just go to your Settings page to set your queue interval and time period.
How to add a post to your queue:
While creating a new post or editing a draft, click on the clock icon to the right of the “Publish” button and choose “Queue.” Then click “Queue” when you’re ready to submit the post.
Schedule assigns a post a specific publishing time in the future (based on your timezone you’ve selected in Account Settings). How to schedule a post:
While creating a new post or editing a draft, click on the clock icon to the right of “Publish” and choose “Schedule.” Enter the time you wish to publish your post, click on “Submit” and then click “Schedule.”
How to review your queued & scheduled posts:
On the web, your Queue is available in the user sidebar located on the left side of the screen underneath “Posts.” (On mobile devices, click on the three line icon located on the upper left of your screen to access your user sidebar.)
Note: the “Queue” button will only display if you have one or more queued or scheduled posts.
A CAVEAT: It is not currently possible to queue or schedule posts to Communities. We do intend to add this feature in the future, but during development it was determined that enabling queueing & scheduling to Communities would require additional workflow and use case requirements that would extend development time when this project has already been delayed, and so it was decided to release queue & scheduling for blogs only at the present time. We will add the ability to queue & schedule to Communities soon after the Pillowfort PWA (our next major development project) is complete.
✨ End of Year Fundraiser Reward Badges: End of Year Fundraiser Rewards Badges will begin to be distributed today. We'll update everyone when distribution is done.
Tumblr media
✨ End of Year Fundraiser Reward Frames: As a special thank you to our community for helping keep Pillowfort online we have released two very special (and cozy!) Avatar Frames for all users.
As for the remaining End of Year Fundraiser Rewards - we will be asking the Community for feedback on the upcoming Light Mode soon.
Tumblr media
✨ Valentine’s Day Avatar Frame: A new Valentine’s Day inspired frame is now available!
✨ Valentine’s Day Premium Frames: Alternate colors of the Valentine’s Day frame are available to Pillowfort Premium subscribers.
Tumblr media
✨ Site FAQ Update - Our Site FAQ has received a revamp.
Terms of Service Update
As of today (February 9th), we are updating our Terms of Service to prohibit the following content:
Images created through the use of generative AI programs such as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, and Dall-E.
An explanation of how this policy will be enforced and what exactly that means for you is available here: https://www.pillowfort.social/posts/4317673
Thank you again for your continued support. Other previously mentioned updates (such as the Pillowfort Premium Price increase, Multi Account Management, PWA, and more) will be coming down the pipeline soon. As always, stay tuned for updates.
Best, Staff

Happy Sunday my sweet cubs, and welcome to Summer 2024 with Mama Bear 😎☀️ I am officially coming off hiatus, but what exactly is this summer going to look like?
First, kiddo graduated from preschool - and we spent way too much money bribing her, and buying her presents, but we’re so proud of her - and she’s home with me until kindergarten starts in mid-August. That means there’s a tiny human around all the time, and it shortens the amount of time I can write during the day. Which brings me to…
Second, there’s no posting schedule for the summer. I try to update one of my stories every 10-14 days, but I can’t guarantee that while kiddo is with me. I’m planning some day trips with her, as well as being regulars at the community pool. Sometimes, I just won’t have the energy to write in the evenings, but we’ll see how things go day-to-day. Y’all are always understanding with that, because you’re the best cubs. I started working on the Donuts & Coffee finale today in the hopes of having a first draft done by the end of the week.
Third, I am semi-officially off Twitter/X. The environment has changed - of course we all knew that - and it’s just no longer in line with how I communicate with writers, readers and mutuals. My DMs are open here if you wanna chat, but my writing updates will be here from now on. I’m also opening my asks again, so as long as my cubs behave themselves (stern Mama Bear look), anonymous asks will remain an option.
Fourth, is open for my cubs. What do you want to see here? I have started a queue, which seems to be running correctly - funny writing memes, TLOU, and random Pedro memes that I queue (am I using the queue correctly???). I try to offer a WIP Wednesday snippet or non-spoiler moodboard. I answer asks which usually leads to TLOU/Joellie discussions, and chat about recently posted and upcoming stories. What do you want to see more of? I’m planning to spend some time watching Part 1 and (maybe) Part 2 over the summer, so maybe some more TLOU discussions? What topics do you want to discuss?
Remember, I’m always open to discussing my writing as it pertains to the Joellie ship - so long as everyone is well-behaved. If things get out of hand - Mama doesn’t tolerate antis, harassment or bullying - then anon asks will have to be shut down.
I currently have 5 WIPs - 2 actively posting, 1 modern AU and 1 canon divergent AU coming down the pipeline, and a one-shot from the Living at the End of the World series.
So, all in all, Mama Bear has a pretty full schedule this summer. What do you want to talk about?

Red Hood rolls into town…
If we took Dick out of the equation for a hot minute, do you think Tim would be a mommy’s boy?
I genuinely wonder what Dick has to do with this but yeah absolutely. He is a mommy's boy. He loved his mom, his mom loved him (literally just look at the newest Batman issue? That's her little boy and he missed her so much. Plus that time he hallucinated her (and Jack, but shh this isn't about him) while almost dying of the clench) and he most definitely did and would have behaved much better for her than he did Jack if she survived instead of him. That's why DC didn't do it, they knew Tim wouldn't be able to lie to his mom continually about Robin, or anything else.

15. Would they rather go back and relive their childhood? Why or why not?
Your Muse’s Backstory Meme
Tumblr media
Hell no.
And whilst we could easily end it here, lemme just get into a little more detail about Liam’s childhood:
Liam grew up in the safe environment of a British middle class neighbourhood in the 70s/80s. And although always financially struggling as a family, he got to enjoy the luxury of good education, travelling and health care. The latter playing a more or less important role in his early childhood years - which was when he was ill in bed with measles, rubella, scarlet fever, chickenpox and mumps.
Coming out of those with a strengthened immune system, he soon needed medical assistance of a different kind when he started to get in fights - or more often than not - picking the very same. His rewards were often bruises, busted lips, a bloody nose, and eventually a twice broken arm. Though tremendous at provoking and starting a fight, Liam throughout his childhood and most of his adult life remained a terrible fighter. Hence he spent a good deal in his childhood days running from bullies and hiding in abandoned weaving mills and behind dust bins in dodgy alleys.
Hiding eventually became the quintessence of his childhood. Liam is broken. and he decided early on that he’ll remain highly selective with whom he shares which fragment of his self. From his magical talent to his sexuality, from his anti-social behaviour to his actual criminal misdeeds. In his endeavour to protect himself from the judgement and rejection of others, Liam condemned himself to isolation. The premise that there won’t be anyone who understands, a sentence to loneliness.
No, Liam wouldn’t not want to relive his childhood. Not the illnesses. Not the fights and the running. Not the disappointment he believed he sparked in everyone around him. He is fine with cherishing the good memories and acknowledge the bad for shaping him into who he is now.

Cluedo tends to turn into a very elaborate rpg. Either that or it’s over in five minutes.
Bridge never gets past the bidding stage, which always degenerates into a fistfight.
Snakes and ladders has been overcomplicated with too many house rules.
Tim gets far too scary when they play Risk.
Game night at the manor is fun, until it comes time to choose what game to play
Twister? Nope. Not with Dick in the house.
Scrabble? Jason knows more words than anyone. Not to mention he's a world class bullshitter so they never know if he's making them up off the top of his head or not.
Poker? Cass somehow beats everyone. Every time. She also refuses to tell anyone who taught her the rules.
Monopoly? Alfred banned Monopoly. Forever. It was also the night he almost banned Damian from carrying weapons in the house.
Uno? Nobody can agree on the rules, and 'draw four' cards have resulted in stitches.
Jenga? Babs is world champion. No question. No contest.
Trivia? Steph and Duke teamed up and wiped the floor with every other team the last trivia night. Bruce has still not recovered.
Cards against humanity? Tim destroyed the deck after the last time they played turned into a therepy session.

I'm filling up my queue with old drafts for the final time and I made a meme about the 'Unhealthy obsession with LITG to nonbinary pipeline' but just realized
That's like... not at all the case. It's just that the concentration of enbies in the fandom have all been on tumblr

This is just a reminder that my (crit role) shipping tag is “cr: smooth sailing” and that I do my best to tag shipping posts/artwork with both that and the ship itself (shadow/gast, fjor/ester, beau/jest, cad/wulf, etc. without the slashes), if you would like to blacklist my shipping tag or any shipping posts I reblog. I try to catch most, and I often check with the op’s tags to see if it was tagged as a ship or not, especially if it’s unclear if it’s shipping art or not (I know i’m awful at reading that in art sometimes, so I do like to double check)
If it’s a post about shipping discourse/drama, i’ll try my best to keep it out of the main tags & tag it with at least one of the following: “negativity”/”discourse”/cr discourse”/”ship drama” (and I also avoid reblogging negative posts in general, but for the few that I do)
Edit: Know that I run a very interesting and wonky draft/tag/queue pipeline, so stuff from months or years ago can & will pop up. This is mostly to note that there will be fjor/clay, cad/wulf, etc. posts posted well after the official confirmations that our beloved firbolg is aroace. I fully appreciate and respect his identity, I’m just working through a backlog of old art & that involves ship art. They’re all being tagged appropriately

OMG YES TO THAT FIC IDEA WHERE JIANG YANLI KILLS JGS i mean, obviously do whatever your muse wants, no pressure. but also badass Jiang Yanli sounds awesome :)
oh yeah I’m definitely gonna write that, haha, I just have to queue it up behind the following:
the Jiang Cheng wishes Wei Wuxian out of existence a la “The Wish” Buffy episode and then realizes that without him the Wen Clan won the war fic (currently in progress)
the Meng Shi dies still owing a debt to the brothel and Meng Yao works there as a prostitute to pay it off fic (currently in progress)
the Wei Wuxian gets adopted by Wen Qing and Wen Ning instead of the Jiang sect (next in the pipeline)
(other fics I still want to write but haven’t quite figured out how well enough to promise I’ll write them are the XiNing fic, the ‘Nie Huaisang goes back in time and accidentally adopts baby Meng Yao’ fic, and the Jin/Wen clan roleswap)
((in case anyone is wondering what I mean when I say ‘in progress’, my confession is that if I’m posting a fic, it’s basically done ... that’s how I’m able to post so frequently. I’ll be editing and fixing shit as I post but the first draft is always complete before I start posting because I loathe leaving things unfinished and I learned lessons the hard way.))

taking things slower
Hi friends! Thank you so much for reading Watcher's World. Unfortunately, the next post is the last of my queue. I have a bunch of gameplay posts in my drafts, but can't publish them or it'll mess with the timeline. (The gameplay screenshots were taken way before the gameplay+story ones, which is why the reshade looks so different.)
The "pose & cc-making" bug bit me recently, which is why I'm mainly working on poses and converting new objects into accessories (plus a completely new mesh in the pipeline!) which will be necessary for upcoming scenes. This time will also be used to mull over a story idea or two; I think my mind is mostly set, but talking it out would be nice.
This isn't a hiatus, I'll still be here! Maybe I'll post screenshots of my WIPs - I really appreciate any feedback you have. You've seen three bucket/pail poses I made earlier; I've converted a spyglass as well and currently making a set of poses for it. The bucket and spyglass currently occupy hat textures for texture quality issues, so they're incompatible with hats; let me know if you're okay with that or not!
Until then, the next gameplay+story post will come when I feel like it. Thank you for your patience and hope you have a great day 😊

I mean, there’s the change itself, at a time when a lot of us are using Tumblr as a place to hide away and feel normal, so the timing couldn’t possibly be worse. even just the change in font is making me feel like I’m on a completely different site. it’s also weirdly crowded and difficult to visually process, while ALSO having huge unused space on the outside edges. but at the moment my biggest complaint is that I can’t queue things from my drafts with one click anymore, I have to edit a post to queue it, which is ridiculous.
ugh. the one upside is that this inspired me to try re-installing xkit yet again -- in the last several years, it has just flat out not worked for me, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to try again, and it actually works this time! as of now there really isn’t anything in xkit to edit the new dashboard (so far as I can see? and based on the post to the new xkit blog from the other day), but hopefully that’ll be coming soon. until then I might just have to avoid, this is so unsettling to look at. I’m going to try to get my queue filled all the way up again (with the obnoxious edit-to-queue pipeline) so things will continue on without me for awhile, but I ugh, I just cannot with this today :P

Hi Pillowfolks! It’s time for a Pillowfort Community Update. It has been quite a while since we’ve done one of these. If this is your first time here: The Community Update is where we let you know what Staff have been doing behind the scenes, happenings within the community, and a preview of what’s in store for the platform.
Community Stats:
As of May 11 2021, Pillowfort currently has over 118,000 registered users and 8,600 Communities.
Welcome New Users!
Welcome to Pillowfort. We are so glad you are part of our community. If you haven’t yet, check out the Pillowfort101 Getting Started Guide.
Public Release Update
It's so good to be back. We missed you so much. Please check out the 4/29 Site Update for a complete list of Security Revisions & Improvements.
Despite opening free public registrations in January, our team has decided not to re-open unlimited free registrations again for now. Instead, we will be introducing an automated rolling waitlist in the upcoming months. What this means is we will allow a certain number of new registrations per day and anyone who signs up for this waitlist will receive a free Pillowfort registration key when space is available. The ability to join via paid keys & user invitations will also still be available. This is simply a third option for people wanting to join that allows our site to grow in a more controlled manner. By switching to an automated rolling waitlist we can allow the Pillowfort community to stay fresh and active while also ensuring our team can keep pace with the demands of maintaining & providing for our growing user base. Our developers also want to focus on optimizing our site during the remainder of the year. Further details are available in the Developer Update below. Finally, we want to take the time to rebuild trust with the Pillowfort Community that our platform is reliable. First impressions are important and we’re aware we let a lot of users down. Nonetheless, we are encouraged by the enthusiasm we’ve seen for the site’s return, and we appreciate everyone who still believes in us.
Developer Update
After a successful re-launch of our platform at the end of April, our team held a meeting to discuss our current developer pipeline and what we would like to complete by the end of the year.
In the interest of continuing to create a positive experience for both current and prospective users, we are going to continue to focus on the site’s long-term success by refining our existing features and making structural improvements to the site that will improve performance. Going forward, this means more of the updates pushed to the site will go towards the platform’s structural integrity and these changes might not be visible to front-end users, but we will be doing a lot of work behind the scenes to set the site up for long-term success. The good news is that when this work is finished, it will allow us to begin the initial preparations of exploring the possibility of a mobile application to be released in 2022.
The exploration of a possible mobile application does not replace our priority into making Pillowfort more mobile browser friendly. We're not going to compromise out content policy for an app store.
In addition, we do still have some exciting things coming up for users to enjoy, such as the site-wide UI redesign which is nearing completion! Our goal is to have it live on Pillowfort sometime during this summer. The other features scheduled to be developed & released in the next few months include: improved blocking options, two-factor account authorization, multiple account linking, post queue & drafts, and organizational improvements to Communities.
Bug Bounty Update
We are still offering a Bug Bounty. If you find a bug on the site, particularly one that could pose a threat to the security or functionality of the site, contact Staff through our Contact form or directly at [email protected]. If you are unsure if we received your report, send us a DM to the Staff account here, or DM one of our social media channels to check on the status.
Note: We sometimes do not receive all notifications from users on other social media.  DMing the Staff account on Pillowfort to check on the status is the preferred method.
The first individual to notify us of a certain issue will be eligible for monetary compensation, depending on the severity of the issue found and the information provided.
We will be updating our Terms of Service within the next few days to add more formal details about our Bug Bounty program
Help Us Keep the Lights On!
At Pillowfort, we do not receive any funding from venture capital or other outside investors because we are committed to keeping our user experience a priority, and not being beholden to outside interests. Pillowfort has been entirely user funded since the beginning. Because users are no longer required to pay for a registration link, we are largely dependent on donations to help us pay the bills. If you would like to support us, you can make a one-time or recurring monthly payment to Pillowfort to help keep the lights on here. Any money donated to us now will be applied as a credit to your account when we release paid features & benefits in the future.

Coming Soon
Here is a look at the new features scheduled to be released sometime in 2021. The following list is not in any particular order.
Improved Blocking Options
Complete Site-Wide UI Redesign
Queue & Drafts
2 Factor Authentication
Linked Account Management
A Special Thanks
Thank you for your support the last several months.  We express our gratitude every chance we get because this platform wouldn’t exist without your help. Pillowfort does not seek corporate investments, so it is entirely due to the generous financial support of our users that we were able to hire a consultant and keep paying our developers & fees while the site has been down. No amount of words written here can convey how wonderful of a feeling it is to return to working on developing a safe space for our entire community to share & create the content they want to create.
We’re going to do everything we can to rebuild trust with our community in the upcoming months with more transparency, more focus on improving Pillowfort’s current features, and improved communication with our user base. Stay tuned.
Best, Pillowfort Staff
